Summary The natural radionuclide content of mineral phosphate fertilizers has been determined gammaspectrometrically. The investigations comprised ca. 70% of the mineral phosphate fertilizers authorized and used in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). At maximum, we found specific activities of 62 nCi Unat/kg, 23 nCi226Ra/kg, 1.6 nCi Thnat/kg and 262 nCi40K/kg. The mean values, weighted by the percentual agricultural consumption of the main phosphate fertilizer groups in 1973/74 and related to the phosphate content, amounted to 58, 40, 2, and 584 nCi/kg P2O5 for Unat,226Ra, Thnat, and40K respectively. This resulted in an annual distribution due to phosphate fertilizing of about 3.9 µCi Unat, 2.7 µCi226Ra, 0.1 µCi Thnat, and 39.9 µCi40K per ha of arable or pasture land in 1973/74 on the average. From these values the air dose rates over agricultural areas have been estimated under extreme conservative assumptions resulting in an additional external exposure of members of the population of 0.02 mrd/a on the average and 0.4 mrd/a in the region of highest phosphate fertilizing intensity. If it is assumed that radium contained in phosphate fertilizers were completely accumulated in the soils during the last 80 years, this value would be raised to 0.3 mrd/a on the average. The occupational external radiation exposure due to natural radionuclides contained in phosphate fertilizers was estimated to be 0.1 mrd/a on the average and 2.3 mrd/a at maximum for persons working in agriculture. These estimates show that natural radionuclides in phosphate fertilizers contribute but very little to the mean terrestrial radiation exposure of the population which is 50 to 55 mrd/a in Germany. Only for the small group of persons working in fertilizer production plants or storehouses a significant increase of the external radiation exposure has to be expected which could reach a doubling of the mean natural exposure value.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. H. Muth on the occasion on his 60th birthday  相似文献

Background radiation dose is used in dosimetry for estimating occupational doses of radiation workers or determining radiation dose of an individual following accidental exposure. In the present study, the absorbed dose and the background radiation level are determined using the electron spin resonance (ESR) method on tooth samples. The effect of using different tooth surfaces and teeth exposed with single medical X-rays on the absorbed dose are also evaluated. A total of 48 molars of position 6–8 were collected from 13 district hospitals in Peninsular Malaysia. Thirty-six teeth had not been exposed to any excessive radiation, and 12 teeth had been directly exposed to a single X-ray dose during medical treatment prior to extraction. There was no significant effect of tooth surfaces and exposure with single X-rays on the measured absorbed dose of an individual. The mean measured absorbed dose of the population is 34 ± 6.2 mGy, with an average tooth enamel age of 39 years. From the slope of a regression line, the estimated annual background dose for Peninsular Malaysia is 0.6 ± 0.3 mGy y−1. This value is slightly lower than the yearly background dose for Malaysia, and the radiation background dose is established by ESR tooth measurements on samples from India and Russia.  相似文献

The current status of radiation protection in Canada is discussed in the last of a three-part series. Particular emphasis has been placed on the role of the Radiation Protection Division of the Department of National Health and Welfare. A radioactive fallout study program has been established involving the systematic collection of air and precipitation samples from 24 locations, soil samples from 23 locations, fresh-milk samples from 16 locations, wheat samples from nine areas and human-bone specimens from various hospitals throughout Canada. A whole-body-counting facility and a special study of fallout in Northern areas have also been initiated. For any age group, the highest average strontium-90 concentration in human bone so far reported has been less than four picocuries per gram of calcium compared with the maximum permissible level of 67 derived from the International Committee on Radiation Protection (ICRP) recommendations. By the end of 1963 a general downward trend of levels of radioactivity detected in other parts of the program has been observed. Programs to assess the contribution to the radiation exposure of members of the population from medical x-rays, nuclear reactor operations and natural background-radiation sources have also been described. The annual genetically significant dose from diagnostic x-ray examinations in Canadian public hospitals has been estimated to be 25.8 mrem. Results from the reactor-environment monitoring programs have not suggested the presence of radioactivity beyond that contributed from fallout.  相似文献

The worldwide average exposure to cosmic rays contributes to about 16% of the annual effective dose from natural radiation sources. At ground level, doses from cosmic ray exposure depend strongly on altitude, and weakly on geographical location and solar activity. With the analytical model PARMA developed by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, annual effective doses due to cosmic ray exposure at ground level were calculated for more than 1,500 communities across Canada which cover more than 85% of the Canadian population. The annual effective doses from cosmic ray exposure in the year 2000 during solar maximum ranged from 0.27 to 0.72 mSv with the population-weighted national average of 0.30 mSv. For the year 2006 during solar minimum, the doses varied between 0.30 and 0.84 mSv, and the population-weighted national average was 0.33 mSv. Averaged over solar activity, the Canadian population-weighted average annual effective dose due to cosmic ray exposure at ground level is estimated to be 0.31 mSv.  相似文献

Summary Although the overall aim of radiobiology is to understand the biological effects of radiation, it also has the implied practical purpose of developing rational measures for the control of radiation exposure in man. The emphasis in this presentation is to show that the enormous effort expended over the years to develop quantitative dose-effect relations relationships in biochemical and cellular systems, animals and human beings, now seems to be paying off. The pieces appear to be falling into place, and a framework is evolving to utilize these data. Specifically, quantitative risk assessments will be discussed in terms of the cellular, animal and human data on which they are based; their use in the development of radiation protection standards; and their present and potential impact and meaning in relation to the quantity dose equivalent and its special unit, the rem. Recent neutron carcinogenesis data in man are evaluated.Invited paper, presented at the 14th Annual Meeting of European Society of Radiation Biology, Jülich, Germany, October 8–14, 1978  相似文献

The severity of radiation exposure for astronauts outside the magnetosphere poses a critical unanswered question bearing on the use of manned vehicles in extended exploration of the solar system (moon, Mars). Such prolonged exomagnetospheric voyages (1-3 years) enter a radiologic environment more severe than that of low earth orbit, an annual dose equivalent in the range of 0.3-0.5 Sv (30-50 rem), and a lifetime excess cancer fatality risk of 3-5% due to low linear-energy-transfer components of galactic cosmic radiation alone. To this calculus must be added estimates for high-atomic-number, high-energy particles, the probability of solar particle events, and the limited effectiveness of shielding. For a 3-year Mars voyage these could elevate the dose equivalent to 1.5-2.25 Sv (150-225 rem) total (0.5-0.75 Sv [50-75 rem] annual) and risks to 5-9% excess cancer fatality. Both the mission (civilian scientific research) and the alternatives (unmanned robotic devices) enter the policy decision here. This paper presents a brief review of pertinent physical and biological data and of research urgently needed before reaching a decision on this question.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the genotoxic effect of low dose of occupational radiation exposure in Nuclear Medicine Department employees, by using cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus assay in peripheral blood lymphocytes. The study included 46 exposed individuals together with 27 from the same area without occupational exposure to radiation which served as controls. The results obtained were evaluated with respect to age, gender, smoking habits, pathological condition and the occupational exposure to radiation of the individuals. The frequency of micronuclei increased significantly with the age of the subjects (P = 0.007). However there were no significant differences in micronucleus frequency with gender, smoking habits and occupational exposure. The frequency of micronuclei was significantly higher in individuals with presence of pathological condition (P < 0.0001) in comparison to healthy population irrespective of their exposure status.  相似文献

A new, simple, fast and sensitive method that enables the measurement of four dialkyl phosphates (DAPs) in human head hair is presented in the current study. The dialkyl phosphates, dimethyl phosphate (DMP), diethyl phosphate (DEP), diethyl thiophosphate (DETP) and diethyl dithiophosphate (DEDTP) are non-selective metabolites of the organophosphate pesticides (OPs). The extraction of DAPs from hair matrix was achieved by one step methanolic extraction. Head hair samples from general population and population occupationally exposed to OPs were analysed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) after derivatization with pentafluorobenzylbromide. The recovery of the target compounds was estimated at 84.3% for DMP, 116.1% for DEP, 109.0% for DETP and 91.5% for DEDTP. The limit of quantitation (LOQ) and detection (LOD) was 20 and 6 pg/mg for DMP, 10 and 5 pg/mg for DEP and DETP and 5 and 3 pg/mg for DEDTP, respectively. With-run and between-run precision as well as accuracy was estimated. The percentage of positive hair samples for DMP, DEP, DETP and DEDTP for the group of general population was 63.0%, 96.3%, 66.7%, and 70.4% respectively. The samples from the group with occupational exposure were positive for all dialkyl phosphates analysed. The median concentrations for DMP were 165.0 and 181.7 pg/mg, for DEP were 51.2 and 812.9 pg/mg, for DETP were 54.0 and 660.1 pg/mg, and for DEDTP were 40.0 and 60.6 pg/mg for the general population group and the group with occupational exposure respectively. Significant differences in the levels of the total dialkyl phosphates amongst exposed and not exposed groups were observed (p < 0.001). More specifically, the total ethyl phosphate (DEPs) and DAPs median concentrations were 119.5 and 301.5 pg/mg for the general population group and 1498.8 and 1694.4 pg/mg for the group with occupational exposure.  相似文献

A car-borne survey was carried out in Kerala, India to estimate external dose. Measurements were made with a 3-in × 3-in NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer from September 23 to 27, 2013. The routes were selected from 12 Panchayats in Karunagappally Taluk which were classified into high level, mid-level and low level high background radiation (HBR) areas. A heterogeneous distribution of air kerma rates was seen in the dose rate distribution map. The maximum air kerma rate, 2.1 μGy/h, was observed on a beach sand surface. 232Th activity concentration for the beach sand was higher than that for soil and grass surfaces, and the range of activity concentration was estimated to be 0.7–2.3 kBq/kg. The contribution of 232Th to air kerma rate was over 70% at the measurement points with values larger than 0.34 μGy/h. The maximum value of the annual effective dose in Karunagappally Taluk was observed around coastal areas, and it was estimated to be 13 mSv/y. More than 30% of all the annual effective doses obtained in this survey exceeded 1 mSv/y.  相似文献

Mortality in the Children of Atomic Bomb Survivors and Controls   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7       下载免费PDF全文
A continuing study of mortality rates among children born to survivors of the atomic bombings and a suitable group of controls has been updated; the average interval between birth and verification of death or survival is 17 years. The mortality experience is now based on 18,946 children liveborn to parents one or both of whom were proximally exposed, receiving jointly an estimated dose of 117 rem; 16,516 children born to distally exposed parents receiving essentially no radiation; and 17,263 children born to parents not in Hiroshima or Nagasaki at the time of the bombings. No clearly significant effect of parental exposure on child's survival can be demonstrated either by a contingency chi(2) type of analysis or regression analysis. On the basis of the regression data, the minimal gametic doubling dose of radiation of this type for mutations resulting in death during (on the average) the first 17 years of life among liveborn infants conceived 0-13 years after parental exposure is estimated at 46 rem for fathers and 125 rem for mothers. On the basis of experimental data, the gametic doubling dose for chronic, low-level radiation would be expected to be three to four times this value for males and as much as 1000 rem for females.  相似文献

The paper presents a study of the radiation doses to eye lens of medical staff during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) procedures performed in a busy gastroenterology department. For each procedure the dose equivalent to the eye, exposure time, dose rate, Kerma Area Product and fluoroscopy time were recorded. Measurements were performed for a period of two months in four main positions of the operating staff, and then extrapolated to estimate annual doses. The fluoroscopy time per ERCP procedure varied between 1.0 min and 28.8 min, with a mean value of 4.6 min. The calculated mean eye dose per procedure varied between 34.9 μSv and 93.3 μSv. The results demonstrated that if eye protection is not used, annual doses to the eye lens of the gastroenterologist performing the procedure and the anesthesiologist can exceed the dose limit of 20 mSv per year.  相似文献

Summary The following discourse presents the result of a theoretical analysis of the radiation exposure for solar proton beams and their secondaries in the altitude region of SST (supersonic transport) and pole regions. A statistical analysis of forms and intensities of measured solar flares has been made. The radiation dosage is calculated as a function of atmospheric depth for several characteristic flares. The dosage in rems from secondary neutrons exceeds the dosage in rems from protons in the altitude region of SST for flare events with low characteristic slopeparameterG, In general the radiation is — without some rare extreme events — beyond of dangerous limits and the rare extreme exposure values will be of some hundred mrem/h.  相似文献

Annual dose limits in occupational radiation exposure are merely a secondary constraint in addition to the primary rule of dose reduction and justification. The limits may, therefore, be reached only in rare, special cases. However, in principle, there might be cases in which the annual limit is continuously exhausted throughout a working life; a high total dose of 0.8 Sv could then be reached. In view of this possibility, there have been considerations of an added restriction by limiting the lifetime occupational dose to 0.4 Sv. The implications of such lifetime doses are considered, and it is shown that an exposure up to the maximum of 0.8 Sv will lead to the need for compensation, if a leukaemia were to occur in the exposed worker. A lifetime dose of 0.4 Sv equally spread over a working life will not lead to the critical value of the probability of causation in excess of 0.5. Nevertheless, it could cause such critical values when it is accumulated during shorter periods. More decisive than the probabilities of causation are, however, the absolute numbers of excess cases of leukaemia due to the occupational exposure. It is seen that less than one excess case would be expected if a group of 100 workers were all exposed to the maximum of 0.8 Sv. Since lifetime doses of 0.8 or 0.4 Sv will be accumulated in very few cases and only with special justification, there appears to be little need to introduce a further limit of lifetime exposure in addition to the current annual limit. Genome instability transmission in offspring was analyzed in order to evaluate the risk of delayed genetic effects of exposure in 95 family triplets in which only fathers experienced prolonged occupational radiation exposure. The mean total preconceptive absorbed dose (TPAD) of external gamma radiation in the paternal gonads was 1.65 ± 0.080 Gy (dose range of 0.57–5.70 Gy), and the mean TPAD of internal alpha radiation from incorporated plutonium-239 in the gonads was 0.0015 ± 0.0003 Gy (dose range 0.000–0.015 Gy). The control group consisted of 50 family triplets in which parents were not occupationally exposed. The mutation process was studied using PCR based on hypervariable minisatellite marker CEB1 (chromosome 2, 2q37.3). The paternal type of inheritance of mutations for minisatellite CEB1 was found in 80% of cases. The analysis revealed a statistically significant increase in minisatellite CEB1 mutations in the common group of families in which fathers experienced prolonged occupational radiation exposure and in the group of families in which fathers were exposed to radiation in a dosage range of 0.5–1.0 Gy as compared to the control, reaching a significance level of p = 0.109 and p = 0.058, respectively. The dose threshold of mutation detection in the offspring of Mayak PA workers was estimated.  相似文献

Measurement of organophosphorus (OP) pesticide metabolites in human biological fluids is an important biomarker of pesticides exposure. We measured the urinary excretion of OP pesticide metabolites to evaluate occupational and non-occupational exposure to OP pesticides in the Chinese population in Shanghai (Eastern China). We collected urine samples from 30 exposed workers in a dimethoate emulsion packing division and from 60 healthy adults without any report of occupational exposure. DMP, DMTP, DMDTP, DEP, DEDP and DEDTP were measured by GC-FPD after derivatization with pentafluorobenzyl bromide. The LOQ values (1 mL urine) were 2.0 μg/L for DMP and DETP, 4.0 μg/L for DEP and DEDTP, 8.0 μg/L for DMDTP, and 10.0 μg/L for DMTP. Dimethyl phosphates were detected in the majority of the urine samples, i.e., 90–100% in the exposed group and 80–87% in the control group. The concentration of the urinary diethyl phosphates DEP and DETP was above the LOQ values in 40 and 20% of samples for the exposed group, and in 50 and 30% of the samples for the control group, respectively. DEDTP was not detectable in the urine samples except for a post-shift exposed worker (detection frequency, 6.7%). Median creatinine-adjusted values (μg/g cr.) for DAP in Chinese with pre-shift, post-shift and without occupational exposure to OP were 316, 584 and 170 for DMP, below LOQ, 115 and 114 for DEP, 840, 1730 and 693 for DMTP, and 255, 756 and 135 for DMDTP, respectively. In all subjects, the highest excretion levels were found for DMTP. Several OP pesticide metabolites were frequently detected in urine samples of both populations studied.  相似文献

Summary Net annual productivity and annual carbon budgets were determined for populations of Littorella uniflora var. americana and Isoetes macrospora in a mesotrophic and oligotrophic lake in northern Wisconsin, to assess the contribution of Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) to annual productivity of the species in their natural environment. Nocturnal carbon accumulation (CAM), daytime uptake of external CO2 via the C3 mechanism, and refixation of endogenously generated CO2 from daytime respiration were the sources of carbon income. CAM activity as diurnal acid rhythms reached maxima of 89 to 182 eq·g-1 leaf fresh weight for the various populations.Maximum rates of daytime 14C uptake ranged from 0.56 to 1.46 mg C·g-1 leaf dry wt.·h-1 for the study populations. Refixation of daytime respired CO2 averaged 37% for the four populations. Carbon loss was due largely to dark respiration, during the day and night. Nocturnal carbon accumulation, daytime CO2 uptake and 24-h dark respiration were of similar magnitude, indicating dark respiration was equivalent to 50% of gross photosynthesis.Net annual production was measured for each population by following leaf turnover. Turnover rates for the Littorella populations were 1.56 and 1.72·yr-1, and for the Isoetes populations, 0.85 and 1.00·yr-1. Measured net annual productivity and calculated net annual productivity (based on carbon exchange) agreed within an average of 12% for the four populations. While CAM activity was greater for the more productive population of each species, the results suggest that the contribution of CAM to annual productivity is greater for the less productive population of each species. CAM contributed 45 to 55% of the annual carbon gain for the study populations.  相似文献

PurposeThe aim of this study was to measure the occupational exposure using active personal dosimeters (APD) in the PET/CT department at different stages of the operation chain i.e. radiopharmaceutical arrival, activity preparation, dispensing, injection, patient positioning, discharge and compare the radiation exposure doses received using two automatic injection/infusion systems. This paper also reflects optimization processes that were performed to reduce occupational exposure.MethodsMeasured APD data were analysed for medical physicists, radiology technologists and administrative staff from 2014 till 2018. For dispensing and injecting 18F-FDG, the automatic infusion/injection system IRIDE (Comecer, Italy) or the automatic fractionator ALTHEA (Comecer, Italy) with wireless injection system WIS (Comecer, Italy) were used. Radiation exposure optimization methods were applied during the data collection period (installation of the transport port, patient management, APD alarm threshold and etc.).ResultsRadiology technologists who perform injection procedures, regardless of the automatic infusion system, received the highest radiation exposure dose. The average doses to the radiology technologists per one study were 1.72 ± 0.33 μSv and 1.16 ± 0.11 μSv with ALTHEA/WIS and IRIDE system, respectively. The average dose for accompanying the patient to the PET/CT scanner and scan procedure was 0.52 ± 0.07 μSv. For the medical physicists, the average dose was 0.29 ± 0.09 µSv. The measured dose for administrative staff was 0.30 ± 0.15 μSv.ConclusionsOccupational exposure can be effectively optimized by different means including staff monitoring with APD, implementation of radiation safety culture and the usage of automatic infusion systems.  相似文献

Ingesting waters holding high levels of natural occurring radioactive element like Radon would contribute to increase in the effective dose received by people followed by an increased prevalence of cancer. The current study is an attempt to describe the extent of contribution of 222Rn to natural background radiation and the resultant effective dose to public of different age groups. In order to do so, 65 groundwater samples from selected parts of Bangalore city were collected and analyzed for radon activity using RAD7 radon monitor coupled with RAD H2O accessories. The radon activity was in the range of 3.05–696 Bq/L (mean: 91.39 Bq/L) and 92.31% of the groundwater samples recorded elevated radon concentration above the United States environmental protection agency (USEPA's) Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) value of 300 pCi/L, corresponding to 11.1 Bq/L. The mean annual effective dose contribution of people falling under different age groups (viz., infants, children, teens: males and females, adults: males and females, pregnant and lactating women) due to ingestion of water-borne 222Rn ranged from 0.082 to 0.444 mSv/y and was found to be higher in all the age groups of males compared to respective female age groups, but well within the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and World Health Organization (WHO) proposed limit of 1 mSv/y.  相似文献

Cytogenetic evaluation of occupational exposure to external γ-rays and internal

Chromosome analyses were performed on peripheral lymphocytes from seven radiation workers exposed to external γ-radiation within maximum annual permissible dose limits during 11 to 22 years of employment. Five years prior to blood sampling, six workers had additionally incorporated the α-emitting radionuclide

which contributed between five to 25% of the total accumulated whole body dose in five workers and about 70% in one worker. For the radiation workers as a group, both the mean frequencies of symmetrical translocations measured by fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH)/chromosome painting and dicentrics+ring chromosomes scored in first division metaphases of conventional preparations were significantly elevated compared with respective controls. The mean biodosimetry estimate for the group was 270 mSv when based on stable translocations which compares well with the mean dose of 247 mSv based on official dosimetry records. The lower mean dose estimate of 160 mSv based on unstable dicentrics is compatible with the well-known loss of dicentrics from the circulating blood with time after exposure.  相似文献

Primary production of phytoplankton and standing crops of zooplankton and zoobenthos were intensively surveyed in Lake Teganuma during May 1983–April 1984. The annual mean chlorophyll a concentrations were as high as 304 µg · l–1–383 µg · l–1. The daily gross primary production of phytoplankton was high throughout the year. The peak production rate was recorded in August and September, when blue-green algae bloomed. The annual gross primary production was estimated as 1450 g C · m–2 · y–1, extremely high as compared with other temperate eutrophic lakes. Zooplankton was predominantly composed of rotifers. The annual mean standing crop of zooplankton was 0.182 g C · m–2 around the middle between the inlets and the outlet and was lower than in most other temperate eutrophic lakes. Zoobenthos was mostly composed of Oligochaeta and chironomids. The annual mean standing crop of zoobenthos ranged from 0.052 g C · m–2 to 0.265 g C · m–2, the lowest values among temperate eutrophic lakes, which is in contrast to the high primary production.  相似文献
