 Radial growth responses to drought were examined in the tree-ring records of six species growing within two locations of differing land-use history and soil moisture characteristics, and in overstory and understory canopy positions in northern Virginia. Tree species experienced differential ring-width reductions during or immediately following four severe drought periods occurring from 1930 to 1965 and were influenced by climatic variables including annual and summer temperatures, annual precipitation, and annual Palmer Drought Severity Index. Relative growth comparisons averaged across species before and after drought years indicated that understory trees on dry-mesic sites grew 11% faster after drought compared to pre-drought rates while mesic site trees in both canopy positions grew approximately 4% slower. Superposed epoch analysis indicated that Liriodendron tulipifera growing on mesic sites experienced greater ring-width reductions associated with drought than co-occurring, more drought-tolerant Quercus alba and Q. velutina. On dry-mesic sites, L. tulipifera also experienced greatly reduced growth as a result of drought but exhibited significant growth increases following individual drought events. Quercus alba was the only species that exhibited a consistent, significant ring-width decrease associated with all droughts on dry-mesic sites. In contrast, Pinus virginiana was least impacted by drought on dry-mesic sites but was much more impacted by drought on mesic sites, indicating a drought×site interaction for this species. Overstory Carya glabra and Q. alba experienced larger growth decreases during drought on dry-mesic versus mesic sites. Understory tree growth reductions did not differ between site types but were often significantly larger than overstory responses of the same species on mesic sites. Following drought, most trees exhibited growth reductions lasting 2–3 years, although several species experienced reductions lasting up to 6 years. The results of this study suggest that tree rings represent an important long-term proxy for leaf-level ecophysiological measurements of growth responses to drought periods. We have investigated the factors influencing the distribution of co-occurring two dwarf bamboo species, Sasa kurilensis (Ruprecht) Makino et Shibata and S. senanensis (Franchet et Savatier) Rehder, within a conifer-broadleaved mixed stand managed with selection cutting in northern Japan. We first sought the possible determinant factors (physical environment and overstory conditions based on 30 years tree census data) deciding the dominant species in the plots (168 3.14m2 area). We then examined the effects of these factors on the culm density and height of the dominant species. Linear discriminant analysis indicated that physical environmental conditions are important in determining the distribution; S. kurilensis tended to dominate plots with steep slope, convex shape and deep snow in early spring. Multiple regression analyses showed that culm density and height decreased significantly on steep slopes for both species. Also, the sum of the basal area (BA) of surrounding conifers (7.5 m radius around the plot), as well as the change in BA over the previous 30 years, had a negative influence on the culm height of both species. A reduction in overstory trees, caused by natural or artificial canopy disturbances, would increase the dwarf bamboo biomass. The effects of physical environment and overstory conditions, working through the dominance of the two dwarf bamboo species, should be taken into account in understanding the dynamics of natural forests in this region.  相似文献

Sister species that diverged in allopatry in similar environments are expected to exhibit niche conservatism. Using ecological niche modeling and a multivariate analysis of climate and habitat data, I test the hypothesis that the Bicknell's Thrush (Catharus bicknelli) and Gray‐cheeked Thrush (C. mimimus), sister species that breed in the North American boreal forest, show niche conservatism. Three tree species that are important components of breeding territories of both thrush species were combined with climatic variables to create niche models consisting of abiotic and biotic components. Abiotic‐only, abiotic+biotic, and biotic‐only models were evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC) criterion. Abiotic+biotic models had higher AUC scores and did not over‐project thrush distributions compared to abiotic‐only or biotic‐only models. From the abiotic+biotic models, I tested for niche conservatism or divergence by accounting for the differences in the availability of niche components by calculating (1) niche overlap from ecological niche models and (2) mean niche differences of environmental values at occurrence points. Niche background similarity tests revealed significant niche divergence in 10 of 12 comparisons, and multivariate tests revealed niche divergence along 2 of 3 niche axes. The Bicknell's Thrush breeds in warmer and wetter regions with a high abundance of balsam fir (Abies balsamea), whereas Gray‐cheeked Thrush often co‐occurs with black spruce (Picea mariana). Niche divergence, rather than conservatism, was the predominant pattern for these species, suggesting that ecological divergence has played a role in the speciation of the Bicknell's Thrush and Gray‐cheeked Thrush. Furthermore, because niche models were improved by the incorporation of biotic variables, this study validates the inclusion of relevant biotic factors in ecological niche modeling to increase model accuracy.  相似文献

Bolderslev Skov (113 ha) is the largest contiguous ancient forest remnant in Denmark. The forest has been preserved since 1998 as a strict non-intervention forest reserve. We studied vegetation structure, floristic gradients, and diversity of the forest in 50 plots of 100 m2 placed according to a restricted random sampling design. Dominant tree species were Fagus sylvatica, Fraxinus excelsior, Tilia cordata and Quercus robur, which in most parts of the forest form a mixed canopy. Most stands appeared to be of moderate age, 55-80 years old, and large old trees were rare. pH in association with light and thickness of the litter layer were the most important factors in explaining floristic gradients in the forest. Soil moisture (dry to mesic) was not strongly correlated with DCA axes for neither tree nor field layer, but had a significant effect on the distribution of a number of herb species. Forest structure was not important in explaining species distributions. Field layer species richness showed a positive relationship with the pH-gradient. At the scale of 1m2 plots we also found a highly significant negative relationship between field layer species richness and the plot-wise Ellenberg indicator value for nitrogen availability. Structure of the tree layer had little effect on field layer species richness. The mixed composition, long continuity, and presence of a high proportion of the regional species pool assigns a high conservation value to Bolderslev Skov and makes it an important site for future studies of the dynamic properties, niche preferences, and inter-specific competition of temperate deciduous forest species. ABSTRACT We quantified breeding bird abundance, diversity, and indicator species in riparian and upland dry forests along 6 third- to fourth-order streams on the east slope of the Cascade Range, Washington, USA. Upland dry forest on southerly aspects was dominated by open ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and dry Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) plant associations. Upland mesic forest on northerly aspects was dominated by closed-canopy Douglas-fir or dry grand fir (Abies grandis) plant associations. Riparian overstory vegetation was dominated by black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) plant associations with a prominent hardwood tree and shrub component. We quantified bird assemblages, diversity, and abundance from parallel point transects on riparian and adjacent dry and mesic upslope forests. We detected 80 bird species from >12,000 point-transect observations during 1998–1999. Eighteen species accounted for 75% of all detections. Species richness and evenness were similar in all 3 forest types, with approximately 35 species and high evenness (0.85) in each forest type. Bird species assemblages differed among dry, mesic, and riparian forest types, with the greatest differences between riparian and both dry and mesic upland forests. Riparian forest had the greatest number (9) of strong characteristic, or indictor, species among the 3 forest types. Upland mesic forest was characterized by 7 indicator species. Upland dry forest had 4 indicator species. Our results indicate that current standards and guidelines for riparian buffers zones would allow for avian refuge and corridor functions along these streams. Forest managers could use our indicator species to predict and monitor shifts in upland forest species composition from thinning and prescribed burning practices that are used to reduce fuels in uplands and to reduce continuity of fire effects between riparian and upland zones.  相似文献

分别以群丛类型和生长基质类型(包括树生、石生、土生)作为资源轴,对小秦岭56个样方中苔藓植物的生态位特征进行分析和对比。结果表明:(1)两种资源轴上苔藓物种的生态位特征存在一定差异,不同资源轴上,苔藓物种生态位宽度排序发生一定改变。两种资源轴上,青藓属(Brachythecium)均具有较大的生态位宽度,而酸土藓属(Oxystegus)和叶苔属(Jungermania)在不同资源轴上生态位宽度差异较大。(2)对比两种资源轴上的生态位重叠值,生长基质类型明显高于群丛类型;在不同资源轴上,个别物种生态位重叠值排序还会发生明显改变。树平藓属(Homaliodendron)与金灰藓属(Pylaisiella)在两种资源轴上表现出完全相反结果。(3)与维管植物相似,生态位宽度较大的苔藓物种生态位重叠值高,生态位宽度小的苔藓物种也会有较大生态位重叠。  相似文献

Summary I studied the survival and development of a 1986 cohort of northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) seedlings growing under a variety of overstory and microsite conditions in a northern hardwood forest dominated by northern red oak, red maple (Acer rubrum L.) paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), and scattered white pine (Pinus strobus L.). Fifty naturally regenerating seedlings of oak were randomly selected in each of three canopy classes: no overstory, partial overstory, and complete overstory. Growth and mortality were measured for six years. Seedling height growth decreased with overstory density, with less growth evident with even a partial overstory. Seedling survival also declined with overstory density and depended on microtopography to a lesser extent. After six years, 92% of the seedlings survived in the open, compared to 54% under the partial overstory, and 36% under the complete overstory. The open environment, in which woody and herbaceous regrowth formed a low canopy reducing light intensities to about 50% of full sunlight, provided a favorable site for the growth and survival of northern red oak.  相似文献

The woody vegetation and associated soil-site variables from a range of upland to swamp sites were measured using 480 0.04 ha plots from Little Black Slough, Goose Pond and Horseshoe Lake in Illinois, and Mingo Wildlife Refuge, Missouri. Multiple regression, correlation, and factor analysis were used to relate soil-site data to vegetation structure and composition. Coenoclines of both the understory and overstory were constructed to represent the upland-swamp vegetation gradient of the region near the northern terminus of the southern floodplain forest. Percent sand, depth of flooding, and silt content were variables most strongly related to the understory coenocline. Depth of flooding, and clay content were most strongly related to the overstory coenocline. Beta diversities of the understory and overstory coenoclines were 5.8 and 6.9HC. Understory density and overstory basal area increased and species richness and heterogeneity decreased along the upland-swamp gradient.Classification techniques identified three or four major overstory vegetation types within each study area. The 15 overstory types were ordinated and environmental characteristics summarized for each. Mingo Wildlife Refuge had the least flooding and lowest soil clay content. Classification of all 480 plots from the four study areas identified three major understory groups (mesic, floodplain and swamp) and eight overstory groups. These eight include aQuercus velutina-Q. alba, Quercus rubra-Q. alba, Liquidambar styraciflua-Ulmus americana, Quercus phellos-Q. palustris, Quercus lyrata-Acer rubrum, Acer rubrum-Nyssa aquatica, Nyssa aquatica-Taxodium distichum and aTaxodium distichum-Nyssa aquatica type arranged from upland to swamp.Botanical nomenclature follows Mohlenbrock (1975).Horseshoe Lake and Little Black Slough studies were supported, in part, by McIntire-Stennis Grants to PAR through the Department of Forestry, Southern Illinois University. The phytoplankton of the River Lujan (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was studied for a period of 18 months, together with physical and chemical variables, in relation to a pollution gradient. 167 taxa were recorded within a seasonal succession characterized by dominance of diatoms with a brief summer green algae facies. A combination of several biotic indices and multivariate analysis was employed to assess the impact of pollution on the phytoplankton community. The biotic indices used were species diversity and richness, algal quotients (green algae/diatom ratio, Centrales/Pennales ratio) and the SD succession rate index. Multivariate procedures included cluster analysis and ordination by PCA of both species and samples, stepwise discriminant analysis and multiple discriminant analysis of variance (MANOVA). Results indicate that community dynamism is attenuated at the more polluted sites, concomitant with an increased predominance of a broad-tolerance algal assemblage, co-dominated by Cyclotella meneghiniana and Nitzschia stagnorum. The changes in the community structure and dynamics described herein involved alterations in the distribution and relative proportions of the algae, rather than modifications in the basic species composition. These changes may not be readily detectable by methods which over-simplify the ecological information, such as systems of indicator species and biotic indices, designed to assess the degree of pollution. The suitability of multivariate analysis and biotic indices in river phytoplankton studies is further discussed.  相似文献

通过对山西灵空山小蛇沟集水区的林下草本层植物群落进行调查和多元分析——TWINSPAN分类、典范对应分析(CCA)与生境、生物因素变量分离, 探讨林分水平上草本层物种分布与环境因子之间的关系。结果如下: 1) TWINSPAN将26个调查样方划分为6种群落类型: 以辽东栎(Quercus wutaishanica)为主的辽东栎-油松(Pinus tabulaeformis)林型、辽东栎杂木林型、辽东栎林型、华北落叶松(Larix principis-rupprechtii)林型、油松林和阔叶油松林型、油松-辽东栎均匀混交林型, 体现了该地区地带性植被类型为暖温带森林的特点。2)群落类型的划分与CCA的结果相吻合, 主要反映了CCA排序第一、二轴的环境梯度, CCA排序轴第一轴突出反映了林分类型与土壤养分梯度, 第二排序轴与坡度、坡位显著相关。Monte Carlo检验结果表明, 林分类型、土壤养分和坡度是影响小蛇沟集水区内林下草本物种分异的最主要的环境因子。3)生境因子与生物因子解释了物种格局变化的42.9%, 其中生境因子占31.8%, 生物因子占7.9%, 生境因子与生物因子交互作用解释部分占3.2%。良好的环境解释反映了调查取样和环境因子选取的合理性。对于50%以上未能被解释的变异部分, 可能归咎于未被选取的因子如干扰或者随机过程。4)在海拔梯度较小的山区, 坡向等小地形因子能较好地指示局部生境的小气候条件, 对林下植物的分布有较好的解释力。  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of 25 species, representing eight genera of theRubieae tribe (Rubiaceae), has been made using the DNA sequence of the chloroplastatp B-rbc L intergene region. Six tropical genera from other tribes ofRubiaceae have been used as outgroups. Whatever the method of analysis (distance, parsimony or maximum likelihood), five groups are clearly separated and described as informal clades. Their relative relationships are not clearly resolved by the parsimony analysis, resulting in eight equally parsimonious trees, 327 steps long, with a consistency index (CI) of 0.749 (excluding uninformative sites). TheRubieae tribe appears monophyletic from the data available. Some new and partly unexpected phylogenetic relationships are suggested. The genusRubia forms a separate clade and appears to be the relatively advanced sister group of the remaining taxa. TheSherardia clade also includes the generaCrucianella andPhuopsis. Galium sect.Aparinoides appears closely attached to theAsperula sect.Glabella clade. The remaining taxa ofGalium are paraphyletic:Galium sect.Platygalium (in theCruciata clade) is linked to the advanced generaCruciata andValantia; the more apomorphic groups ofGalium form theGalium sect.Galium clade, including the perennial sectionsGalium, Leiogalium, andLeptogalium as well as the annual (and possibly polyphyletic) sect.Kolgyda.  相似文献

The present study was designed to investigate the relative importance of biotic versus abiotic factors in determining the distribution of species among heterogeneous environments. The composition of 70 quadrats of 0.25-m2, located in a 13-m × 40-m region of a mown field in Durham, North Carolina, was defined through two sets of principal component scores representing soil and vegetation gradients in the study area. The first principal component in each of the analyses exhibited a monotonic increase in value along an elevational gradient characterizing the field. This represents a one-dimensional correlation structure between the background soil and vegetation variables. Secondary soil and vegetation gradients, represented by the remaining principal component axes, were for the most part uncorrelated.Regression analyses were used to study the relationships coupling the distribution of Danthonia sericea, a bunchgrass species, to the distribution of associated soil and vegetation gradients. The correlation of the distribution of Danthonia to the dominant soil/vegetation gradient was highly significant. In addition, strong, secondary correlations with the background vegetation remained after removal of variance associated with soil composition; the converse was, in general, not true. One exception involved a minor zinc gradient that exhibited a negative correlation with the distribution of Danthonia. A strong correlation was found coupling an interaction term associated with the primary soil/vegetation gradient to the distribution of Danthonia. The results suggest that the present distribution of Danthonia is modified to a large extent by competitive interactions with other plant species. However, the relative significance of the soil-by-vegetation interaction term also indicates that soil composition must be explicitly considered to properly understand the role of biotic interactions. Any one factor, biotic or abiotic, may modify the distribution of a species, but the way in which it modifies the distribution will depend directly upon the composition of the other factors making up the biotic and abiotic, environmental background.Abbreviations Danthonia = the species Danthonia sericea - PC = principal component - PCA = principal component analysis - SS = sum of squares  相似文献

Dominant tree species influence community and ecosystem components through the quantity and quality of their litter. Effects of litter may be modified by activity of ecosystem engineers such as earthworms. We examined the interacting effects of forest litter type and earthworm presence on invasibility of plants into forest floor environments using a greenhouse mesocosm experiment. We crossed five litter treatments mimicking historic and predicted changes in dominant tree composition with a treatment of either the absence or presence of nonnative earthworms. We measured mass loss of each litter type and growth of a model nonnative plant species (Festuca arundinacea, fescue) sown into each mesocosm. Mass loss was greater for litter of tree species characterized by lower C:N ratios. Earthworms enhanced litter mass loss, but only for species with lower C:N, leading to a significant litter × earthworm interaction. Fescue biomass was significantly greater in treatments with litter of low C:N and greater mass loss, suggesting that rapid decomposition of forest litter may be more favorable to understory plant invasions. Earthworms were expected to enhance invasion by increasing mass loss and removing the physical barrier of litter. However, earthworms typically reduced invasion success but not under invasive tree litter where the presence of earthworms facilitated invasion success compared to other litter treatments where earthworms were present. We conclude that past and predicted future shifts in dominant tree species may influence forest understory invasibility. The presence of nonnative earthworms may either suppress of facilitate invasibility depending on the species of dominant overstory tree species and the litter layers they produce.  相似文献

黄土高原砒砂岩区是我国水土流失最为严重的地区之一,油松(Pinus tabuliformis)是该区水土保持与水源涵养的优势乔木。以几种不同立地类型人工油松林为对象,应用Levins生态位宽度指数、Pianka生态位重叠指数和冗余度分析(RDA),研究林下草本群落生态位特征及其与环境的相互响应。结果表明:所调查的150个油松林下草本样方中,共发现31种草本植物,隶属于11科24属,阳性旱生植物居多。不同立地类型人工油松林下草本群落生态位特征不同,生态位宽度指数及生态位重叠指数均表现阳坡大于阴坡,平坡好于斜缓坡,但整体指数均较小,表明物种对环境资源利用程度较低,种间竞争度不大,群落处于相对稳定状态。通过对比典范对应分析(CCA)及冗余度分析(RDA),RDA排序更能较好揭示生态位特征与环境因素的关系,得出乔灌层郁闭度、土壤有机质、土壤含水率和坡度是林下草本群落生态位特征各异的主导环境因子。  相似文献

The present study aimed to infer evolutionary scenarios for Vipera latastei and Vipera monticola in the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb through the identification of spatial patterns in morphological character variation and biogeographic patterns in morphological variability distribution. Ten morphological traits from 630 vipers were analysed with geostatistic and ecological niche modelling in a geographical information system. Interpolation by Kriging was used to generate surfaces of morphological variation, which were combined with spatial principal components analysis (SPCA). Putative morphological differentiated groups generated by SPCA maps were tested with discriminant function analysis (DFA). Maximum entropy modelling and nine environmental variables were used to identify factors limiting the distribution of groups and areas for their potential occurrence. Groups supported by DFA were: Western Iberia, Eastern Iberia, Rif plus Middle Atlas, Algeria, and High Atlas. Their distribution is influenced by common environmental factors such as precipitation. Areas of probable sympatry between Iberian groups matched the morphological clines observed by geostatistics tools. Geographic variation patterns in V. latastei‐monticola are probably due to vicariant separation of Iberian and African populations during the opening of the Strait of Gibraltar, and population refugia during the Quaternary glaciations with secondary contact. The taxonomic status of northern Morocco and Algerian groups should be further investigated. Predicting changes in potential habitat for endangered species as a result of global warming requires considering more than future climate conditions; it is also necessary to evaluate biotic associations. Most distribution models predicting species responses to climate change include climate variables and occasionally topographic and edaphic parameters, rarely are biotic interactions included. Here, we incorporate biotic interactions into niche models to predict suitable habitat for species under altered climates. We constructed and evaluated niche models for an endangered butterfly and a threatened bird species, both are habitat specialists restricted to semiarid shrublands of southern California. To incorporate their dependency on shrubs, we first developed climate‐based niche models for shrubland vegetation and individual shrub species. We also developed models for the butterfly's larval host plants. Outputs from these models were included in the environmental variable dataset used to create butterfly and bird niche models. For both animal species, abiotic–biotic models outperformed the climate‐only model, with climate‐only models over‐predicting suitable habitat under current climate conditions. We used the climate‐only and abiotic–biotic models to calculate amounts of suitable habitat under altered climates and to evaluate species' sensitivities to climate change. We varied temperature (+0.6, +1.7, and +2.8 °C) and precipitation (50%, 90%, 100%, 110%, and 150%) relative to current climate averages and within ranges predicted by global climate change models. Suitable habitat for each species was reduced at all levels of temperature increase. Both species were sensitive to precipitation changes, particularly increases. Under altered climates, including biotic variables reduced habitat by 68–100% relative to the climate‐only model. To design reserve systems conserving sensitive species under global warming, it is important to consider biotic interactions, particularly for habitat specialists and species with strong dependencies on other species.  相似文献

Conservation strategies of forested landscapes must consider biodiversity of the included site types, i.e. timber-quality forests and associated non-timber-quality stands. The objectives were to characterize forest overstory structure in timber-quality versus associated non-timber-quality stands; and to compare their understory communities. Six forest types were sampled in Nothofagus forests of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina): two timber-quality N. pumilio forests, and four associated non-timber-quality stands (edge, N. antarctica, wetlands and streamside forests). Overstory structure and understory vegetation (species richness, frequencies, cover and biomass) were characterized during spring and summer seasons. Analysis of variance and multivariates were carried out. Overstory structure differed across the site types, with higher tree size, canopy closure and tree volume in timber-quality stands. Fifty-one understory plant species were observed, but understory variables varied with site types, especially wetlands (highest native and exotic richness, cover and biomass, and 25% of exclusive species). Site types were grouped in three: N. antarctica stands, streamside stands and the other N. pumilio forests according to multivariate analysis. Forty three percent of plants were distributed in all site types, and all timber-quality forest understory species were present in some associated non-timber-quality stands. Timber-quality N. pumilio forests have a marginal value for understory conservation compared to associated non-timber-quality stands, because these last include all the plants observed in timber-quality forests and also possess many exclusive species. Therefore, protection of associated non-timber-quality stands during forest management planning could increase understory conservation at landscape level, and these could be better reserves of understory diversity than retentions of timber-quality stands.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to understand the mandible of the giant panda in morphometric terms to explore differences between the giant panda and other carnivores distributed in China, in terms of functional adaptation. Twelve mandibular variables were studied using bivariate (allometry) and multivariate (principal components analysis, PCA, and discriminant functional analysis, DFA) tools. When deviations were produced from allometric baselines consisting of all the species studied, the giant panda displayed a much more developed mandibular structure than the bear, leopard, and tiger. This may be related to its specific dietary preference for bamboo, which has very strong fibers. Results also indicate that the mandibular structure among carnivores mainly reflects the differences in their dietary preferences and functional adaptation. Three groups were found referring to dispersal profiles expressed by the first two axes of PCA and DFA: (1) the two panda species – the herbivorous carnivores; (2) the black bear – the omnivorous carnivore; and (3) the tiger and leopard – the hypercarnivores. Nevertheless, a significant separation between the two panda species was also found with the profiles displayed by the first and third axes of DFA. In addition to no close evolutionary relationship and phylogenetic development, a noticeable separation between the two panda species found in DFA analysis may be associated with their variation in consuming different parts of the bamboo plant: the giant panda feeds on stems and the red panda feeds on leaves.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 449–456.  相似文献

This study investigates behavioural similarities in six ecologically and morphologically similar labrid species. Ontogenetic shifts in behaviour within species are also considered. There have been many studies on ontogenetic differences in fishes with respect to diet, microhabitat use, and visual acuity and how it pertains to foraging ability; however, fewer studies have been specifically directed towards the ontogeny of behaviours. In this study, detailed behavioural observations were recorded of randomly chosen juveniles, initial phase, and terminal phase adults from each of the following species: Halichoeres bivittatus, H. garnoti, H. maculipinna, H. poeyi, and Thalassoma bifasciatum. Only juvenile H. radiatus were observed. The observation periods lasted 10min, and four periods per individual were pooled for analysis. There were many similarities and few striking differences in the behavioural profiles of the six species [discriminant function analysis (DFA) of behaviours correctly classified 60% of the individuals]. In some cases, life intervals within a species separated more strongly than heterospecifics of the same life interval. For example, H. bivittatus juveniles were more similar to H. maculipinna juveniles than to conspecific initial phase and terminal phase adults. From DFA, species were separated in the first discriminant function by an inverse relationship between the frequency of hiding (= out of view) and eating, and life intervals were separated in the second discriminant function by an inverse relationship between the frequency of swimming alone and eye flickering (= remaining motionless and twitching their eyes). Eye flickering is assumed to be a behaviour that increases an individual's awareness of predators or environmental threats. Notable differences among species included the greater frequencies of hiding by juvenile H. radiatus, and all life intervals of H. garnoti. As these labrids grow, they increase their frequencies of swimming alone, and decrease their frequencies of hovering and searching for food. There was a remarkable similarity in ontogenetic changes in these behaviours for all of the species studied.  相似文献
