Summary An experiment examined the effects of diet on brood rearing in colonies ofLeptothorax ambiguus andL. longispinosus and on fighting between colonies of the two species. Colonies fedDrosophila and honey reared more pupae than colonies fed the Bhatkar and Whitcomb (1970) diet. However, diet had no effect on intercolonial fighting. 相似文献

Summary Australian meat ants often inhabit colonies with widely dispersed nest holes, and this study examines how resource is harvested and distributed in a colony ofIridomyrmex sanguineus Smith (Formicidae: Dolichoderinae). The three principal types of foragers (tenders, honeydew transporters, scavengers) exhibited nest hole fidelity, where harvested resource was consistently delivered to the same nest hole by each foraging individual. Australian meat ants thus use a harvesting system based on dispersed central place foraging. Evidence of frequent larval transport among nest holes, age polyethism developing in the direction of foraging, and the tendency for nest-associated workers to accept new nest holes more readily than foragers, suggests that workers develop fidelity to the particular nest hole in which they eclose. Coupled with larval transport, nest hole fidelity may allow a colony with widely dispersed nest holes to adjust its structure to more efficiently harvest a resource distributed unevenly in space or time. 相似文献

Summary A gregarine parasite (Neogregarinida, Ophryocystidae) ofLeptothorax ants was found near West-Yellowstone, Montana, USA. Infested pupae are characterized by grey to black coloration, irregular pigmentation of compound eyes, and toothless mandibles. The pathogenic effects closely resemble those in the fire ant,Solenopsis geminata, when infested byMattesia geminata. Infested pupae die. The infection can be transmitted to healthy colonies and to differentLeptothorax species by feeding them with infested pupae. 相似文献

Summary An ethological test was designed to investigate nestmate recognition in adult ants. Contrary to classic dyadic tests, it consisted of a choice situation where a tested-worker was faced with nestmate and non-nestmate workers. These were kept alive, tied down, and thus immobilised in the neutral arena to record the tested-worker's reactions independently of the behaviour of the others. Such tests, applied to the ponerine ant,Ectatomma tuberculatum, enabled us to record various measures of discrimination and to limit aggressive behaviours between alien ants, which often leads to serious injury in dyadic tests. They also demonstrated the influence of age on discrimination behaviour in this species. 相似文献

The transfer of nutrients between organisms is a common feature of mutualism. The production of these food rewards is often assumed to be costly. Estimation of the costs of producing food rewards is important for understanding the overall effects of the interaction on fitness. When food rewards are harvested by several species differing in foraging behavior, costs to the producer may differ. The larvae of many species in the butterfly family Lycaenidae produce secretions consumed by tending ants. Here I report that three North American ant species, Formica perpilosa, Dorymyrmex sp. (smithi complex), and Forelius foetida, had no negative effect on the duration of development and adult size of the lycaenid Hemiargus isola. Moreover, tending by the ant Formica perpilosa significantly enhanced larval growth, resulting in butterflies that were 20% heavier than their untended counterparts. Tending by the ants Dorymyrmex sp. (smithi complex) and Forelius foetida had no effect on butterfly weight. Tended, nonfeeding larvae lost 69% more weight than untended, nonfeeding larvae. Taken together, the results suggest that, although ant tending imposes a physiological cost, H. isola larvae use behavioral or physiological mechanisms to compensate or overcompensate for nutrients lost to ants. 相似文献

In two nearctic ants, Leptothorax canadensis and Leptothorax sp. A, young queens may either found their own nest solitarily after mating or seek adoption into an established colony. Whether a queen disperses or not is associated with genetically determined queen morphology in Leptothorax sp. A. Whereas a majority of winged queens attempt solitary colony founding after mating, most wingless, intermorphic queens return to their maternal nests and new colonies are founded by budding after hibernation. The latter strategy appears to be correlated with patchy, isolated habitats, whereas in extended boreal forests dispersal on the wing is probably more common. Alternative dispersal strategies strongly affect the average number of queens per colony and seasonal fluctuations of colony structure. 相似文献

The cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) of ants provide important cues for nest-mate and caste recognition. There is enormous diversity in the composition of these CHCs, but the manner in which this diversity has evolved is poorly understood. We gathered data on CHC profiles for 56 ant species, relating this information to their phylogeny. We deduced the mode of evolution of CHC profiles by reconstructing character evolution and then relating the number of changes in CHC components along each branch of the phylogeny to the length of the branch. There was a strong correlation between branch length and number of component changes, with fewer changes occurring on short branches. Our analysis thereby indicated a gradual mode of evolution. Different ant species tend to use specific CHC structural types that are exclusive of other structural types, indicating that species differences may be generated in part by switching particular biosynthetic pathways on or off in different lineages. We found limited, and contradictory, evidence for abiotic factors (temperature and rainfall) driving change in CHC profiles. 相似文献

Based on the well-known mutualism between ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and aphids (Homoptera: Aphididae), we conducted a five-year experiment of ant-exclusion from the canopies of citrus trees as a possible method of biological control of aphids. However, our results showed that the exclusion of ants from the canopies increased, instead of reducing, aphid abundance. To explain this unexpected result, we reasoned that the exclusion of ants from the canopies might also have excluded crawling insects that prey on aphids, such as the European earwig (Forficula auricularia L., Dermaptera: Forficulidae). Such a possibility is supported by the negative relationship between aphid density and the abundance of earwigs, consistent with a top-down control of aphids by earwigs. In contrast, the abundance of other aphid predators (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae, and Heteroptera) had no such negative effect on aphid density but a positive one, suggesting a bottom-up control, and showed no differences between control and ant-excluded trees. Thus, the most likely explanation for the increase in aphid abundance in the ant-excluded trees is the absence of earwigs from the canopies of the experimental trees, providing further evidence of the major role that earwigs play as control agents of aphids in cultivated trees. 相似文献

Summary Queen ants start new colonies either unassisted by workers (independent founding), assisted by workers from their natal nest (dependent founding), or assisted by the workers of other species (dependent, socially parasitic). The monogyne form of the fire ant,Solenopsis invicta, founds independently in summer, but in the fall it also produces a few sexuals some of which overwinter, then fly and mate in early spring. These overwintered queens lack the nutritional reserves and behaviors for independent colony founding. Rather, they seek out unrelated, mature, orphaned colonies, enter them and exploit the worker force to found their own colony through intraspecific social parasitism. Success in entering orphaned colonies is higher when these lack overwintered female alates of their own. When such alates are present, orphaning causes some to dealate and become uninseminated replacement queens, usually preventing entry of unrelated, inseminated replacement queens. Such colonies produce large, all-male broods. Successful entry of a parasitic queen robs the host colony of this last chance at reproductive success. Only overwintered sexuals take part in this mode of founding. 相似文献

The basic (2 C) nuclear DNA content has been determined for the first time in four primitive angiosperms by means of scanning densitometry of Feulgen-stained nuclei. The mean values obtained are the following:Liriodendron tulipifera L. (2n = 38): 1.58 pg;Magnolia soulangiana
Soul-bod. (2n = 76): 11.95 pg;Cinnamomum camphora
T. Nees (2n = 24): 1.18 pg;Illicium anisatum L. (2n = 28): 6.72 pg. These values do not represent extremes, but rank among low DNA amounts. All species display at least low degress of endopolyploidy. 相似文献

Concepts of primitive angiosperm flowers have changed in recent years due to new studies on relic archaic groups, new paleobotanical finds and the addition of molecular biological techniques to the study of angiosperm systematics and evolution.Magnoliidae are still the hot group, but emphasis is now on small primitive flowers with few organs and also on the great lability of organ number. Of the extant groups, a potential basal position of the paleoherbs has been discussed by some authors. Although some paleoherbs have a simple gynoecium with a single orthotropous ovule, anatropous ovules may still be seen as plesiomorphic in angiosperms. Anatropy is not necessarily a consequence of the advent of closed carpels. It may also exhibit biological advantages under other circumstances as is the case in podocarps among gymnosperms. Valvate anthers have now been found in most larger subgroups of theMagnoliidae (recently also in paleoherbs) and in some Cretaceous fossils. Nevertheless, as seen from its systematic distribution, valvate dehiscence is not necessarily plesiomorphic for the angiosperms, but may be a facultative by-product of the thick connectives and comparatively undifferentiated anther shape inMagnoliidae and lowerHamamelididae. A perianth is relatively simple in extantMagnoliidae or even wanting in some families. In groups with naked flowers the perianth may have been easily lost because integration in the floral architecture was less pronounced than in more advanced angiosperm groups. Problems with the comparison of paleoherb flowers with those ofGnetales are discussed. The rapid growth of information from paleobotany and molecular systematics requires an especially open attitude towards the evaluation of various hypotheses on early flower evolution in the coming years. 相似文献

The social behavior of the common marmoset has been well studied in captivity, but little is known about the social dynamics
of this species in its natural habitat. Social relationships were studied in three polygynous groups of common marmosets,Callithrix jacchus, in northeastern Brazil. Breeding adults appeared to be the center of social life and were the most frequent grooming partners
or nearest neighbors for most adult group members. The observations of unidirectional agonistic interactions suggest that
breeding adults were also dominant over all other group members, but that neither sex was dominant over the other. The dynamics
of within-group social relationships are likely to be important determinants in the reproductive strategies employed by marmoset
females. 相似文献

Reproductive structures and phylogenetic significance of extant primitive Angiosperms 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

A brief survey is presented on fossil reproductive structures of early Angiosperms from the Lower and mid-Cretaceous and at the same time on the reproductive structures of those extant Angiosperms which resemble most closely these fossils and which seem to be especially primitive also on other grounds: a first group (Degeneriaceae, Himantandraceae, Eupomatiaceae, Austrobaileyaceae) possessing relatively complicated and conspicuous flowers with elaborated inner staminodes, a second group (Chloranthaceae, Trimeniaceae, Amborellaceae) possessing small and relatively simple, inconspicuous flowers with peculiar features in the carpels, and a third group (Winteraceae) possessing flowers with unusual variability in organ number and size. The three groups exhibit a certain diversity in pollination biology, although cantharophily seems to prevail, however different the cantharophily character syndromes may be between the groups. In the extant primitiveMagnoliidae variability occurs on other morphological levels than in the higher advanced Angiosperms. This has to be taken into consideration in evaluations of the systematic relationships of the various groups of theMagnoliidae. Presumably often their relationships are closer than it may appear at first sight. This is also true for the three groups here discussed. 相似文献

Accumulating evidence suggests that unicellularArchezoa are the most primitive eukaryotes and their nuclei are of significance to the study of evolution of the eukaryotic nucleus.
Nuclear matrix is an ubiquitous important structure of eukaryotic nucleus; its evolution is certainly one of the most important
parts of the evolution of nucleus. To study the evolution of nuclear matrix, nuclear matrices ofArchezoa are investigated.Giardia lamblia cells are extracted sequentially. Both embedment-free section EM and whole mount cell EM of the extracted cells show that,
like higher eukaryotes, this species has a residual nuclear matrix in its nucleus and rich intermediate filaments in its cytoplasm,
and the two networks connect with each other to form a united network. But its nuclear matrix does not have nucleolar matrix
and its lamina is not as typical as that of higher eukaryotes; Western blotting shows that lamina ofGiardia and two otherArchezoa Entanzoeba invadens andTrichomonas vaginali all contain only one polypeptide each which reacts with a mammalia anti-lamin polyclonal serum and is similar to lamin B
(67 ku) of rnammiia in molecular weight. According to the results and references, it is suggested that nuclear matrix is an
early acquisition of the eukaryotic nucleus, and it and the “eukaryotic chromatin” as a whole must have originated very early
in the process of evolution of eukaryotic cell, and their origin should be an important prerequisite of the origin of eukaryotic
nucleus: in the lamin (gene) family, B-type lamins (gene) should be the ancestral typz and that A-type lamins (gene) might
derive therefrom.

The taxonomy of Cataglyphis ants has many unsolved problems and chemotaxonomy can provide additional insight for their resolution. We describe here the chemical content of the postpharyngeal and Dufour glands of three Cataglyphis ant species: C. viaticus, C. mauritanicus from Morocco and for the first time a Sub-Saharan Cataglyphis, C. sp. (BF) from Burkina Faso. These three species are very distinct chemically with respect to both the postpharyngeal and Dufour glands. Methyl-alkenes, rare in ants, are characteristic of C. sp. (BF) postpharyngeal glands. A comparison with C. bicolor from Tunisia indicated that C. sp. (BF) can be included into the bicolor group with C. viaticus. We suggest that the content of the Dufour gland is a better phylogenetic indicator than the content of the postpharyngeal gland. 相似文献

Self-isolation and insect pollination in the primitive angiosperms: New evaluations of older hypotheses 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A review of the literature, compiled over the past 40 years suggests new directions for theories discussing the evolution of reproductive isolation and entomophily in angiosperms. Data on breeding systems suggests that the protoangiosperms may have developed gametophytic self-incompatibility. Protogyny is probably ancestral to protandry and herkogamy. Although the proto-flowers were bisexual wide variation in the number of sexual organs within proto-flowers probably led to labile sexuality and early trends towards dicliny. Beetle-pollination in extant relicts appears too specialized to represent an ancestral condition. Rather, the proto-flowers may have been generalist entomophiles incorporating some beetles,Plecoptera, thrips, micropterigid moths and proto-dipterans into their fluctuating spectra of opportunistic pollinators. Bee-pollination is probably polyphyletic in origin evolving repeatedly from angiosperms showing these generalist syndromes. There is still no correlation between primitive bees (especiallyColletidae) and the relictual angiosperms. Pollen that is usually retained within the anthers following dehiscence and the presence of staminal filaments and styles characterizes most of the flowers of those relictual angiosperms pollinated by specialized, modernApoidea. 相似文献

The evolution of the Australian flora through the Tertiary has not been reviewed by a megafossil palaeobotanist for almost a century. Based on material available and published studies, the Australian Tertiary can be considered in three units: Eocene, Oligo-Miocene, and Pliocene. Key taxa in the Eocene includeCasuarinaceae, Proteaceae, Fagaceae, Podocarpaceae, andLauraceae. Many known Eocene deposits are interpreted as warm, humid rainforests.Oligo-Miocene floras reflect a climatic deterioration, with greater occurrence of sclerophylly and xerophylly. A reduction of tropical taxa is seen with an increase ofMyrtaceae and earliest records ofMimosaceae, Chenopodiaceae, andPoaceae. These trends continue into the Pliocene, which is not well represented in Australia.Problems needing to be addressed include the discrepancy between the pollen and megafossil records ofNothofagus, the origins of Australia's wet tropical taxa, and the role of fire in the early evolution of the Australian flora. 相似文献

Although monandry (single mating) is the ancestral state in social hymenopteran insects, effective mating frequencies greater
than 2 have been confirmed for a fair amount of ant species: Cataglyphis cursor, the leaf-cutters of the genera Atta and Acromyrmex, army ants of the genera Eciton, Dorylus, Aenictus and Neivamyrmex, and some North American seed harvester species of the genus Pogonomyrmex. This last genus spreads throughout open arid habitats from Patagonia to southwestern Canada. Whereas some North American
Pogonomyrmex species are thoroughly studied, we know much less about these ants in South America. The objective of this study was to estimate
the effective mating frequency of Pogonomyrmex inermis and P. pronotalis, two Pogonomyrmex sensu stricto species from the central Monte desert of Argentina. A total of 477 P. pronotalis workers from 24 colonies and 402 P. inermis workers from 20 colonies were analyzed using six and four highly polymorphic microsatellites, respectively. The multilocus
analysis revealed that all colonies were monogynous and all queens multiply-mated. The effective mating frequency was 8.75
and 6.52 for queens of P. pronotalis and P. inermis, respectively; those values increased up to 15.66 and 9.78, respectively, when corrected for sampling errors. This is the
first demonstration that queens in at least some members of the South American Pogonomyrmex sensu stricto are strictly polyandrous, with mating numbers per queen at least as high as those previously found for North American species.
We suggest that multiple mating probably arose early in the evolution of the genus Pogonomyrmex and may be the basis of its ecological success and wide distribution.

The Dufour gland secretions of both virgin queens and workers of Camponotus aethiops are similar and consist of straight chain hydrocarbons ranging from C10–C15 with C11 the major compound. The difference between the two castes is that C15 appears only as a trace in queens, and the total amount of secretion is smaller in queens than in workers. In Lasius fuliginosus, the Dufour gland secretion contains a series of straight chain hydrocarbons (C10–C17) with undecane the major compound, and a series of 2-alkanones ranging from C13 to C19.
