The impact of applying edible oils to corn silks on ear-feeding insects in sweet corn, Zea mays L., production was evaluated in 2006 and 2007. Six edible oils used in this experiment were canola, corn, olive, peanut, sesame, and soybean. Water and two commercial insecticidal oils (Neemix neem oil and nC21 Sunspray Ultrafine, a horticultural mineral oil) were used as the controls for the experiment. Six parameters evaluated in this experiment were corn earworm [Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)] damage rating, the number of sap beetle [Carpophilus spp. (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae)] adults and larvae, the number of corn silk fly (or picture-winged fly) (Diptera: Ulidiidae) larvae, common smut [Ustilago maydis (D.C.) Corda] infection rate, and corn husk coverage. Among the two control treatments, neem oil reduced corn earworm damage at both pre- and postpollination applications in 2006, but not in 2007, whereas the mineral oil applied at postpollination treatments reduced corn earworm damage in both years. The mineral oil also reduced the number of sap beetle adults, whereas the neem oil applied at postpollination attracted the most sap beetle adults in 2007. Among the six edible oil treatments, the corn and sesame oils applied at postpollination reduced corn earworm damage only in 2007. The application of the peanut oil at postpollination attracted more sap beetle adults in 2006, and more sap beetle larvae in 2007. Olive and neem oils significantly reduced husk coverage compared with the water control in both years. The mineral oil application consistently increased smut infection rate in both 2006 and 2007. Ramifications of using oil treatments in ear pest management also are discussed.  相似文献

Low thermotolerance of entomopathogenic fungi is a major impediment to long-term storage and effective application of these biopesticides under seasonal high temperatures. The effects of high temperatures on the viability of an entomopathogenic fungus, Isaria fumosorosea SFP-198 (KCTC 0499BP), produced on different substrates amended with various additives were explored. Ground corn was found to be superior in producing the most thermotolerant conidia compared to yellow soybean, red kidney bean, and rice in a polyethylene bag production system. Using ground corn mixed with corn oil as a substrate resulted in only 7% reduction in germination compared to ground corn alone (67% reduction) after exposure of conidia to 50°C for 2 h. Corn oil as an additive for ground corn was followed by inorganic salts (KCl and NaCl), carbohydrates (sucrose and dextrin), a sugar alcohol (sorbitol), and plant oils (soybean oil and cotton seed oil) in ability to improve conidial thermotolerance. Unsaturated fatty acids, such as linoleic acid and oleic acid, the main components of corn oil, served as effective additives for conidial thermotolerance in a dosage-dependant manner, possibly explaining the improvement by corn oil. This finding suggests that the corn-corn oil mixture can be used to produce highly thermotolerant SFP-198 conidia and provides the relation of unsaturated fatty acids as substrates with conidial thermotolerance.  相似文献

The fatty acid and cholesterol contents of tissue membranes are the determinants of membrane stability and functionality. This study was designed to evaluate the influence of a high monounsaturated fatty acid diet on the fatty acid composition of rat liver microsomes and on their cholesterol and lipid phosphorus content. Weanling animals were fed for 5 weeks with high fat diets containing olive oil or corn oil. Saturated fatty acids were increased and oleic acid decreased in microsomal total phospholipids and in the three major phosphoglycerides, phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylinositol (PI), of rats fed corn oil as compared to the olive oil group. The percentage of linoleic acid was higher in the corn oil group, but only for total phospholipids and PC. Linoleic and alpha-linolenic metabolites were significantly increased in total phospholipids of olive oil-fed animals with respect to those fed corn oil. These changes were responsible for the low unsaturation index found in microsomal phospholipids of the corn oil group. The diet did not affect the microsome cholesterol or the lipid phosphorus content. These results show that, in olive oil-fed rats, the cholesterol content and the degree of unsaturation of liver microsomes was similar to that observed in weanling animals; this probably suggests an adequate maintenance of functionality of membranes in olive oil-fed animals.  相似文献

Several recent reports have shown that diets in which the only source of fat was fish oil can modify the course of diseases with an inflammatory or immune component. In these experiments we examined the effect of a fish oil diet on experimental amyloidosis in mice. In most azocasein-treated mice, amyloid deposits were found in the spleen, varying from a trace to wide and contiguous perifollicular bands. The spleens of mice receiving fish oil had significantly less amyloid than did spleens of mice fed corn oil. A marked increase in spontaneous blastogenesis that occurred in azocasein-treated mice on corn oil was suppressed in azocasein-treated mice on fish oil. Substitution of the unsaturated fatty acids of corn oil with those of fish oil was also found to modify the prostaglandin profile of macrophages. This altered profile may change cellular immune function and/or enhance the processing of serum amyloid A to retard the induction of secondary amyloidosis in mice.  相似文献

AimsTo determine whether beta-endorphin contributes to the ingestion of and preference for dietary oil, we examined the relationship between the dynamics of beta-endorphin, before and after the ingestion of corn oil, and the intake volume of corn oil.Main methodsRats were offered 5% corn oil for 20 min for 5 consecutive days so they could acquire a preference for corn oil. On day 6, seven groups of rats were presented with the oil for defined time periods, and we measured the beta-endorphin levels in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) before and after the presentation of corn oil as well as the consumed volume of corn oil at defined time points.Key findingsBeta-endorphin levels in serum and CSF were significantly increased 15 min after the ingestion of corn oil, followed by a rapid decrease and maintenance at the basal level throughout the rest of the experimental period. The intake of corn oil was the lowest in the time period of 15–30 min, when the beta-endorphin level reached a peak value. The intake volume of corn oil might be inversely correlated with beta-endorphin levels in serum and CSF. The pretreatment of naloxone, an antagonist of the opioid receptor, decreased the initial licking rate for corn oil and increased the latency for corn oil in the licking test.SignificanceThe beta-endorphin was rapidly released after oil ingestion, which contributed to the hedonic preference and ingestive behavior for fat.  相似文献

Corn oil is reported to elicit a conditioned place preference (CPP) in a CPP test in mice. To further investigate a reinforcing effect of corn oil, we studied whether the corn oil acts as a reinforcer under a progressive ratio (PR) schedule in the operant task. BALB/c mice were trained to lever press for sucrose and corn oil. After reaching a stable break-point for 100% corn oil, the PR test was conducted for various concentrations of corn oil (0%-100%). The reinforcing effect of corn oil was increased in a concentration-dependent manner under the PR schedule. A mineral oil and 0.3% xanthan gum as vehicles did not show any reinforcing effect in the PR test, suggesting that oily and viscous texture was not related to the reinforcing property of corn oil. The break-point for corn oil was attenuated by pretreatment with (-)-sulpiride, a D(2) antagonist, in the PR test. On the other hand, SCH23390, a D(1) antagonist, did not influence the break-point. Furthermore, the pretreatment with (-)-sulpiride or SCH23390 did not influence the intake of corn oil in a one-bottle test for 30 min, suggesting that the dopaminergic system is involved in the reinforcing effect but not the consumption of corn oil in mice. In conclusion, operant response to corn oil is concentration-dependently enhanced under the PR schedule. This reinforcing effect of corn oil is at least partly mediated through the dopaminergic systems via D(2) receptors.  相似文献

BALB/c nude mice (nu/nu) carrying established human transplantable breast tumors (MX-1) and fed fat from either fish oil (MaxEPA), corn oil, or lard, were treated with either an unconjugated mixture or an 131I-labeled cocktail of Mc1, Mc3, Mc5 and Mc8 four anti-human milk fat globule monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs). MaxEPA diet by itself reduced mean volume of tumor MX-1 to 36% below that of both the corn oil and lard diets. Injection of unconjugated MoAbs reduced tumor volumes only in corn oil fed nude mice when each group was compared to their respective controls. Treatment with 131I-MoAbs produced large tumor volume reductions in all groups with the three different diets. The greatest reduction was obtained with the synergistic effect of MaxEPA and 131I-labeled MoAbs.  相似文献

We evaluated in mice their preference for different vegetable oils using the two-bottle choice test. Mice showed preference for all vegetable oils (at 1% concentration in emulsion) tested, including corn oil, canola oil, and mixed vegetable oil, compared to a control fluid without oil. Mice also significantly preferred highly palatable sucrose solutions (5-20%) in this test. One percent corn oil was selected to the same extent as were these sucrose solutions. Mixtures of 1% corn oil and several concentrations of sucrose were preferentially selected as compared to corn oil or sucrose alone. The concentration-response curves of oil-sucrose mixtures vs sucrose (0.5-20% concentrations) were similar to those of sucrose vs control solutions. These results suggest that 1% corn oil and sucrose at the concentrations tested did not affect each other's preference. Chronic intake of 20% sucrose solution, but not 100% corn oil, changed the preference for lower concentrations of each, and both induced remarkable increases in body weight of mice. In conclusion, we showed that mice preferred vegetable oils, and this preference compared favorably with highly palatable sucrose solutions and was not changed by chronic intake of corn oil.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to compare plasma lipoprotein lipid composition, as well as white adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase activity, in rats fed purified diets high in either sucrose or corn oil. The experimental diets (65% of calories as sucrose or corn oil, 15% as the opposite nutrient, and 20% as casein) were given ad libitum for 4 weeks. An additional group was fed a nonpurified diet as a reference diet. Both sucrose and oil diets were spontaneously consumed in isocaloric amounts by the animals. Despite energy intakes that were 35% lower than that of the reference group, the sucrose and oil groups exhibited final body weights that were only 6 and 9% lower, respectively, than that of the reference group, and accumulated more fat in the epididymal depots. Postprandial as well as fasting total cholesterol levels were similar in the sucrose and oil groups, while the high-density lipoprotein to total cholesterol ratio was highest in the animals fed corn oil. In both the fasted and fed states, plasma total triglyceride levels were 73% higher in the sucrose group than in the corn oil group. The largest triglyceride differences due to diet were observed in the chylomicron + very-low-density lipoprotein fraction. The oil-fed rats accumulated large amounts of triglycerides in their livers. Postprandial lipoprotein lipase activity in epididymal adipose tissue was almost twice as high in the sucrose group as in the oil group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Light microscopy was used to examine the oviduct and endometrium of offspring from mice administered DES (10 micrograms/kg in 0.1 cc of corn oil, subcutaneously) or corn oil alone on Day 15 of gestation. Offspring were sacrificed at 5, 7 and 9 months of age. Oviduct changes in DES exposed offspring included numerous abnormal secretory cells which lined the mucosal folds of the isthmus. These cells contained a distinct granular cytoplasm which was eosinophilic and a nucleus displaced towards the apical surface. In addition both the ampulla and isthmus had mucosal folds which extended to the serosal surface and an accumulation of subepithelial fibrinoid material. Endometrial changes included squamous metaplasia of both the surface and glandular epithelial layer as well as extensive cystic glandular hyperplasia. In addition the endometrial connective tissue stroma exhibited fibrinoid accumulation. These changes may reflect an altered endocrine environment resulting from ovarian abnormalities during adulthood.  相似文献

An effective formulation for mould- and aflatoxin-free storage of corn   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
The efficacy of cinnamon oil, individually and in binary mixture with sodium chloride (NaCl), in preserving stored corn from fungal invasion and subsequent deterioration was investigated. It was observed that Aspergillus flavus and A. glaucus , the predominant storage fungi, invade corn during storage with the concomitant production of aflatoxin and the resultant loss of germinability in grains. The treatment with cinnamon oil at the non-phytotoxic level of 5 μl/g corn in combination with 10 μl/g NaCl solution (5%) inhibits synergistically the fungal infection, growth and aflatoxin production together with the deterioration of grains (loss of germinability). However, the test oil, when applied alone, was found to be effective only at the phytotoxic level of 20 μl/g corn.  相似文献

We studied the effects of olfactory stimuli on preference for corn oil in mice. In the conditioned place preference test, voluntary intake of 100% corn oil by both olfactory normal and ZnSO4-induced olfactory-blocked (anosmic) mice resulted in their place preference for the corn oil-related box. In the olfactory normal mice, place preference was also observed by voluntary intake of linoleic acid as well as of corn oil. In the two-bottle choice test, normal mice showed significant preference for test fluids that contained corn oil at all concentrations (1-10%) tested relative to vehicle alone. However, the lower concentrations (1 and 3%) of corn oil were not preferred in the anosmic mice. These results suggested that stimuli other than olfaction contributed to the rewarding effects of corn oil, but at lower concentrations olfactory stimuli might act as a signal for the oil.  相似文献

This study was performed to determine the effects of dietary perilla oil, a n-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) source, on hepatic lipogenesis as a possible mechanism of lowering triacylglycerol (TG) levels. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained for a 3-hour feeding protocol and fed one of five semipurified diets as follows: 1% (w/w) corn oil control diet, or one of four diets supplemented with 10% each of beef tallow, corn oil, perilla oil, and fish oil. Two separate experiments were performed to compare the effects of feeding periods, 4 weeks and 4 days. Hepatic and plasma TG levels were decreased in rats fed perilla oil and fish oil diets, compared with corn oil and beef tallow diets. The activities of hepatic lipogenic enzymes such as fatty acid synthase (FAS), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and malic enzyme were suppressed in the fish oil, perilla oil, and corn oil-fed groups, and the effect was the most significant in the fish oil-fed group. Also, the activities of glycolytic enzymes, glucokinase, and L-pyruvate kinase showed the similar trend as that of lipogenic enzymes. The activity of FAS, the key regulatory enzyme in lipogenesis, was positively correlated with hepatic and plasma TG levels and reduced significantly in the perilla oil-fed group compared with corn oil-fed group. In addition, the FAS activity was negatively correlated with the hepatic microsomal content of EPA and DHA. In conclusion, suppression of FAS plays a significant role in the hypolipidemic effects observed in rats fed ALA rich perilla oil and these effects were associated with the increase of hepatic microsomal EPA and DHA contents.  相似文献

We previously demonstrated that hyperglycemic-obese (obob) mice fed a 1% corn oil diet accumulated 10 times as much hepatic cholesterol as did their non-obese (+/?) littermates fed this diet because of difficulty in removal of cholesterol from the liver rather than from increased synthesis. Furthermore, feeding the bile acid analog Delta(22)-5beta-taurocholenic acid completely prevented the accumulation of hepatic cholesterol in obob mice fed the 1% corn oil diet. The hypothesis to be tested in the current study is that these aspects of cholesterol metabolism in the obob mouse do not occur in the hyperinsulinemic and insulin-resistant gold thioglucose obese mouse. Gold thioglucose obese (gtgo) and non-obese (ngtgo) mice were fed diets containing either 1% corn oil or 40% lard each with or without added taurocholenic acid for 6 weeks and then given a 250 mg meal of [U-(14)C]-glucose with incorporation of label into hepatic cholesterol and fatty acid measured 2 hours later. Consistent with earlier results in the obob model, incorporation of labeled glucose was significantly increased in obese compared with non-obese mice fed 1% corn oil and significantly reduced either by feeding 40% lard or by adding taurocholenic acid to the diet. In addition, taurocholenic acid greatly increased incorporation of labeled glucose into hepatic cholesterol in obese or non-obese mice fed either diet. In contrast to obob mice, the percentage of fat in the liver of gtgo mice was increased only 50% compared with ngtgo mice. The comparable increase in obob mice was 480%. Hepatic cholesterol did not increase significantly in the liver of gtgo mice fed 1% corn oil when compared with the ngtgo controls. The comparable increase in obob mice fed 1% corn oil was 350%. Also in marked contrast to obob mice, feeding taurocholenic acid increased hepatic cholesterol compared with non-obese controls fed either diet. The results are discussed in the light of the presence of circulating leptin in gtgo but not in obob mice.  相似文献

The comparative effects of feeding diets containing corn, olive, coconut, or menhaden fish oil on efficiency of energy deposition and on short term energy expenditure were examined in growing hamsters. Diets comprising oils mixed with laboratory diets at 10% oil w/w were fed ad libitum for 3 weeks. Animals fed laboratory diets were used as controls. Body composition was determined before and after the feeding period using 3H2O distribution space. Oxygen consumption was measured in each animal during the final week. Weight gains of groups fed corn and olive oil diets exceeded those of the group fed laboratory diet alone (p less than 0.05), although metabolizable energy intakes were similar across groups. Corn oil fed animals demonstrated higher carcass energy gains as fat compared with laboratory diet fed or menhaden oil fed groups. This was reflected in an increased fractional deposition of metabolizable energy intake in the group fed corn oil diet compared with the latter two groups. Fecal energy losses were lower in the group fed corn oil diet, and higher in the group fed laboratory diet alone, compared with other groups. Oxygen consumption did not differ between groups. These findings indicate that feeding dietary fish oil, compared with corn oil, favours energy substrate oxidation reducing the fraction of metabolizable energy partitioned for storage.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that were supplemented with vitamin E on lipid peroxidation, glutathione-dependent detoxifying enzyme system activity, and lipogenic fatty acid synthase (FAS) expression in rat liver. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed semipurified diets containing either 1% (w/w) corn oil or 10% each of beef tallow, corn oil, perilla oil, and fish oil for 4 wk. Alpha-tocopherol was supplemented in perilla oil (0.015%) and fish oil (0.019%). Hepatic thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, an estimate of lipid peroxidation, were not significantly different among the dietary groups. The glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione S-transferase activities were all elevated by the polyunsaturated fats, especially fish oil. The activity of FAS was reduced in the polyunsaturated fat-fed groups in the order of fish oil, perilla oil, and corn oil. The mRNA contents decreased in rats that were fed the 10% fat diets, particularly polyunsaturated fats, compared with the rats that were fed the 1% corn oil diet. Similarly, the inhibitory effect was the greatest in fish oil. These results suggest that lipid peroxidation can be minimized by vitamin E; PUFA in itself has a suppressive effect on lipogenic enzyme.  相似文献

The replacement of dietary starch by sucrose results in an increase in hepatic lipogenesis in the rat. When corn oil (4% by weight or 9% of the energy content of the diet) was included with the sucrose (20% by weight, 20% of the energy content) the lipogenic effect of the sucrose was completely suppressed. In contrast, when beef tallow replaced the corn oil, the induced activity caused by the sucrose was reduced by only approximately 20%. No significant differences were observed between males and females. These diets containing sucrose supplemented with either 4% (w/w) corn oil or 4% (w/w) beef tallow, were then used to ascertain whether or not the effects on hepatic lipogenesis were reflected in changes in the amount of fat deposited during growth from 4--24 weeks of age. It was shown that the percentage body fat was only statistically different (P less than 0.05) when animals fed sucrose-supplemented diets were compared with animals fed diets supplemented with sucrose and beef tallow. However, there were no significant differences in total carcass weight of these rats. The results are discussed in terms of the relative contribution of liver and adipose tissue to total lipogenesis and the factors which control the lipogenic activity in the two tissues.  相似文献

The effect on some enzymes of rat tissue of diets low in fat content   总被引:9,自引:9,他引:0
1. Rats of two strains were kept on three different diets; one was a commercial diet of rat pellets, one contained about 80% of sucrose and 20% of casein and was supplemented with corn oil, and the third was a similar diet without the corn oil. 2. On the commercial diet, the specific activities of pyruvate kinase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and fructose 1,6-diphosphatase in the livers of one strain of rats (strain A) were 1.5-3 times those in the other strain (strain B). When the diet high in sucrose and supplemented with corn oil was given, there were large increases in the specific activity of pyruvate kinase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase and fructose 1,6-diphosphatase in the livers of strain A rats. With strain B rats the increases were much smaller. Omission of corn oil from the diet caused a threefold increase in the specific activity of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase in strain B rats, but had little effect on other enzymes. 3. The enzymes of the kidneys and hearts of strain A rats were also more active than those of strain B rats. In strain A rats, the specific activities of pyruvate kinase and fructose 1,6-diphosphatase in the kidney increased when the sucrose content of the diet was high, but in the kidneys of strain B rats there was little change. 4. In strain A rats, the specific activity of pyruvate kinase in the heart more than doubled with the high-sucrose-corn oil diet and increased threefold when corn oil was omitted. No changes were seen in strain B rats. 5. In strain A rats, omission of corn oil from the diet increased the ability of the kidneys to synthesize glucose from lactate. 6. In strain B rats, addition of corn oil to the diet resulted in a decrease in the liver in the specific activity of ATP citrate lyase and in the ability to incorporate acetate into lipid.  相似文献

In the present study we investigated: (1) the contribution of the skeletal muscle to the mechanisms underlying the impaired glucose homeostasis and insulin sensitivity present in dyslipemic rats fed a sucrose-rich diet (SRD) over a long period of time and (2) the effect of fish oil on these parameters when there was a stable hypertriglyceridemia before the source of fat (corn oil) in the diet was replaced by isocaloric amounts of cod liver oil. Our results show an increased triglyceride content in the gastrocnemius muscle with an impaired capacity for glucose oxidation in the basal state and during euglycemic clamp. This was mainly due to a decrease of the active form of pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDHa) and an increase of PDH kinase activities. Hyperglycemia, normoinsulinemia, and diminished peripheral insulin sensitivity also were found. Even though there were no changes in the insulin levels, the former metabolic abnormalities were completely reversed when the source of fat was changed from corn oil to cod liver oil. The data also suggest that in the gastrocnemius muscle of rats fed a SRD over an extended period, an increased availability and oxidation of the lipid fuel, which in turn impairs the glucose oxidation, contributes to the abnormal glucose homeostasis and to the peripheral insulin insensitivity. Moreover, the parallel effect on insulin sensitivity, glucose, and lipid homeostasis attained through the manipulation of dietary fat (n-3) in the SRD suggests a role of n-3 fatty acid in the management of dyslipidemia and insulin resistance.  相似文献
