We examined growth changes in concentrations of plasma insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and testosterone, and somatometric parameters in two captive male agile gibbons from birth to about 4 years of age, to examine the evolution of growth patterns in primates. Plasma IGF-1 concentrations in agile gibbons generally increased with age with values ranging from 200 to 1,100 ng/ml. The growth profiles in plasma IGF-1 in the gibbons were similar to those reported for chimpanzees. The highest concentrations of plasma testosterone (230 and 296 ng/dl) were observed within the first 0.3 years from birth, then the concentrations rapidly decreased and fluctuated below 100 ng/dl. Continuously higher IGF-1 concentrations were observed after 2.6 and 3.5 years of age. The profiles of plasma testosterone in these gibbons also resembled those of other primates including humans. However, their plasma testosterone levels in both neonate and adult stages (60 ng/dl) were lower than those reported for macaques and chimpanzees of respective stages. The obtained growth profiles of plasma IGF-1 and testosterone suggest that the adolescent phase starts around 2.6 or 3.5 years of age in male agile gibbons. The growth trend in many morphological parameters including body weight showed a linear increase without a significant growth spurt at approximately the onset of puberty. Head length and first digit length had reached a plateau during the study period. Brachial index, which indicates the relative length of forearm to upper arm, significantly increased gradually through the growth period. This result indicates that forearm becomes relatively longer than the upper arm with growth, which may be an evolutionary adaptation for brachiation.  相似文献

In 7 patients with end stage renal failure, anterior pituitary function was tested by simultaneous application of maximally effective doses of the hypothalamic releasing peptides, corticotropin-releasing hormone, growth hormone-releasing hormone, thyrotropin-releasing hormone and gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and compared to 8 normal controls. In addition to the pituitary hormones, plasma cortisol, thyroxine and testosterone concentrations were measured. To test for possible effects of treatment with recombinant human erythropoietin (rhu-EPO), all patients with chronic renal failure were studied again after partial correction of anemia by treatment with erythropoietin. Before initiation of rhu-EPO treatment, plasma concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone were significantly elevated and the thyroid-stimulating hormone and prolactin responses to thyrotropin-releasing hormone blunted when compared to normal controls. Treatment with rhu-EPO induced a significant increase in plasma ACTH and follicle-stimulating hormone concentrations. All other pituitary functions remained unchanged. Thus, the general improvement in well-being, working capacity and sexual activity cannot be attributed to hormonal changes.  相似文献

Male lambs were utilized in an experiment designed to evaluate the effects of cranial cervical ganglionectomy (GX), castration and age on hormone secretion profiles. Blood plasma samples were collected at hourly intervals for 24 hours from 24 lambs aged 101 days and 20 lambs aged 277 days, then assayed for concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone and prolactin. At both ages pulsatile secretion of LH and testosterone was confirmed, but no circadian rhythm of LH testosterone or prolactin secretion was detected. Castration elevated LH levels significantly at both ages. GX and its interaction with castration had no effect on LH secretion at 101 days, but at 277 days these factors were significant, largely due to elevated levels being recorded from GX castrates. GX did not affect testosterone levels in entire animals at either age, while plasma from castrates contained no detectable testosterone. GX reduced prolactin concentrations at 101 days of age (summer) but elevated them at 277 days of age (winter). Castration and the interaction of castration with GX had no significant influence on plasma prolactin levels at either age. This study confirmed that the pineal gland of sheep is involved in the regulation of prolactin secretion, and probably influences LH secretion as well.  相似文献

In a number of species of seasonally breeding marsupial, the male is fertile throughout the year but there is a marked seasonal change in weight of the accessory sexual glands. In this study, body weight, prostate, epididymis and testis weights and plasma concentrations of testosterone, LH and prolactin and pituitary content of LH and prolactin were determined in male Bennett's wallabies shot at 1–2 month intervals over a period of 17 months. There was a highly significant increase in prostate weight which was coincident with the breeding season for this species. A small but significant increase in testis weight was also observed but epididymis weight remained unchanged. Plasma testosterone concentrations were significantly increased at a time coincident with the increase in prostate weight. Plasma prolactin and LH concentrations were low in most animals and remained unchanged during the study. In contrast, pituitary prolactin and LH contents showed highly significant changes, with increasing and peak hormone content preceding maximum prostate weight and plasma testosterone concentrations by several months. While these latter results suggest a role for prolactin and LH in the seasonal control of the reproductive organs in the male wallaby, a more intensive study of the pattern of secretion of these hormones and possibly more sensitive hormone assays are required to understand their relative roles in regulating the annual cycle of prostate growth.  相似文献

The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal system was investigated in drug free young men with either mania or acute schizophrenia and in age matched controls by measuring, at frequent intervals during a 17 hour "neuroendocrine day," plasma concentrations of luteinising hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin, testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), and cortisol. Plasma LH in mania was significantly increased compared with the control value at all time periods and increased in the morning and evening samples compared with values in the schizophrenic patients. Plasma prolactin and cortisol concentrations were significantly greater in mania and schizophrenia compared with control values at several times during the day, but there were no significant between group differences in plasma testosterone or SHBG. These results show that in young men with mania there is a major disturbance in the central mechanisms that control the release of LH, the control of prolactin and cortisol secretion is abnormal in mania and acute schizophrenia, and plasma LH concentrations may provide a useful hormonal diagnostic test for mania.  相似文献

Entire and castrate male lambs, which were cranial cervical ganglionectomized (GX) or untreated, were utilized in a study of responses to intravenous GnRH; 24 animals were treated at both 101 and 277 days of age. GX caused a reduction in basal LH concentrations of both wethers and rams at the first sampling, but increased pre-injection levels of this hormone in 277 day old wethers. Basal LH levels of castrates were substantially higher than those of entires, but GX had no significant influence on pretreatment testosterone secretion in rams. GnRH treatment elevated plasma LH levels in all animals, while in entires increases in testosterone concentrations also occurred. Castration significantly increased peak LH levels together with total LH output. At neither age were the LH or testosterone reponses influenced significantly by GX, nor was the interaction of castration and GX significant for LH response data. The major effect of age at GnRH treatment was that markedly higher testosterone responses were recorded from the older rams.  相似文献

Maternal effects can influence offspring growth and development, and thus fitness. However, the physiological factors mediating these effects in nonhuman primates are not well understood. We investigated the impact of maternal effects on variation in three important components of the endocrine regulation of growth in male and female mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx), from birth to 9 years of age. Using a mixed longitudinal set (N = 252) of plasma samples, we measured concentrations of insulin‐like growth factor‐I (IGF‐I), growth hormone binding protein (GHBP), and free testosterone (free T). We evaluated the relationship of ontogenetic patterns of changes in hormone concentration to patterns of growth in body mass and body length, and determined that these endocrine factors play a significant role in growth of both young (infant and juvenile) and adolescent male mandrills, but only in growth of young female mandrills. We also use mixed models analysis to determine the relative contribution of the effects of maternal rank, parity, and age on variation in hormone and binding protein concentrations. Our results suggest that all of these maternal effects account for significant variation in hormone and binding protein concentrations in all male age groups. Of the maternal effects measured, maternal rank was the most frequently identified significant maternal effect on variation in hormone and binding protein concentrations. We suggest that these endocrine factors provide mechanisms that contribute to the maternal effects on offspring growth previously noted in this population. Am. J. Two short term studies of LH and testosterone secretory profiles were carried out to evaluate the effects of stage of sexual maturity on the patterns of secretion of these hormones in Large White x Landrace boars. Four pubertal and three post-pubertal boars were subjected to plasma sampling every twenty minutes for 24 hours. During puberty, plasma profiles of LH varied in a manner indicative of a highly pulsatile mode of secretion. Likewise, large fluctuations in plasma testosterone levels were noted at this age, but they were not as frequent as those of LH. In contrast, plasma LH and testosterone profiles of post-pubertal boars showed fewer and smaller fluctuations in hormone concentrations. The overall mean levels of LH and testosterone were 0.82 and 1.04 ng/ml in pubertal boars, and 0.39 and 0.81 ng/ml in post-pubertal animals. At neither age was there any evidence of diurnal variations in plasma hormone concentrations.  相似文献

There are very few data available on the relationship between sporting activities, endocrine levels and changes in anthropometric measurements during growth. In order to study these relationships, we have made measurements of growth, changes in physical conformation and the plasma levels of several hormones [cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEA-S), testosterone, growth hormone, somatomedin C, insulin, glycaemia and haemoglobin A1C] in 175 boys, aged 10-16 years, who have played football at a competitive level and in 224 boys, severing as controls, who have never performed sporting activities regularly. The football players were divided into prepubertal and pubertal subjects (10-11.99 years, 12-13.99 years and 14-16 years, chronological and bone age groups). Our results showed no significant differences in the growth indices between prepubertal athletes and controls, but the plasma level of DHEA-S was significantly higher (P less than 0.05) in the athletes. Pubertal football players, however, were significantly taller than the control subjects, particularly at 14-16 years chronological age. There were no such significant differences when bone age was considered. The pubertal football players were also more advanced in all biological indices of maturity, i.e. pubic hair, testicular volume and bone age. The increase in DHEA-S in pubertal football players, already seen in prepubertals, was also combined with a significant increase in testosterone, growth hormone and cortisol levels. Thus, in football players the DHEA-S level is already higher during prepuberty. This increase thus precedes all other indices of growth and maturation associated with puberty. We hypothesize that, while not excluding the possible influence of selection, as ours is a cross-sectional study, adrenal hyperactivity may be mainly responsible for the earlier onset of pubertal growth and maturity in exercising males.  相似文献

A preliminary study was conducted to evaluate the change in nocturnal concentrations of testosterone, luteinizing hormone, growth hormone, prolactin, thyroxine, and Cortisol following a control day (no exercise) and on a day in which exercise was performed. Exercise consisted of 90 min of cycling at 70% of each subject's maximal oxygen uptake. The exercise occurred from 1630 to 1800 hr on the exercise day while a comparable period of rest took place on the control day. Hormonal concentrations were evaluated at 2-hr intervals for a 12-hr period each night (2000-0800 hr). The subjects slept from 2255 (± 20 min [x ± S.E.M.]) until 0715 (± 15) during each night. All hormone responses were plotted and integrated for the 12-hr period. Analysis indicated that a significant augmentation of the prolactin and thyroxine responses occurred, while concurrently an attenuation of the growth hormone and Cortisol responses were observed. Contrastingly, no significant effects were found for the testosterone and luteinizing hormones responses. The physiological significance of these findings remained to be determined, but the results do suggest that further research is warranted in the area.  相似文献

Sexual behavior and the increase in plasma hormone levels of LH, prolactin, and testosterone associated with sexual behavior were examined in three age groups of sexually naive male rats. The two younger groups (5- and 11-month-old) mated normally and their behavioral latencies decreased significantly following sexual experience. Both plasma testosterone and LH concentrations increased significantly following entrance of a receptive female into the mating arena. Plasma prolactin levels rose but not significantly. However, the 27-month-old rats neither mated nor showed an increase in the three plasma hormone concentrations during exposure to a receptive female. Only basal testosterone levels were significantly lower than those of the younger animals. Low testosterone levels possibly contributed to deficiencies in both behavior and its associated hormone release. The monitoring of sexual behavior was facilitated by a computer, programmed to record, store, and analyze behavioral events.  相似文献

The male infant rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) undergoes a period of testicular activation similar to that seen in the human infant. Plasma testosterone (T) concentrations rise after birth, reaching levels of about 500 ng/dl at 1-3 mo of age and then fall to approximately 50 ng/dl at 60 mo. The plasma T metabolic clearance rates (MCRT) and production rates (PRT) were measured in two rhesus infants at 1 and 6 mo of age to determine the mechanism of the observed increase in plasma T. While there was little change in the MCRT between 1 and 6 mo, PRT was much higher at 1 mo than at 60 mo of age. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that the increased plasma testosterone levels in infant rhesus monkeys reflect an increased production of testosterone rather than an altered metabolic disposition of the hormone.  相似文献

Tanyang is one of the most important sheep breeds in the northwest of China. However, there is no detailed data on sexual development and timing of puberty/sexual maturity of this breed. This experiment was designed to study the relationships between growth rate and sexual development by measuring body weight, testis diameter, and plasma testosterone concentrations, and observing sexual behavior through puberty from 3 to 8 months old of entire Tanyang ram lambs. At same time, to assess the potential efficacy and welfare benefits of non-surgical castration, the effect of active immunization against gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) on sexual development and growth rate on ram lambs was evaluated, and compared with surgically castrated and entire lambs. The results showed that body weight increased at a constant rate from 3 to 8 months old of age. Testis diameter increased rapidly between 3 and 5 months, followed by a period of slow growth. Plasma testosterone concentrations increased sharply from 3 to 6 months of age (P<0.05), after which there were no significant changes from 6 to 8 months of age. Sexual behavior started from 5 months of age. After ram lambs were immunized against GnRH at 3 months of age, there was no increase in testis diameter in the first 4 months after immunization. Plasma testosterone concentrations remained at similar levels to surgically castrated lambs until 6 months of age, and the onset of sexual behavior was delayed, compared with entire ram lambs. GnRH immunization and surgical castration had no significant effect on the body weight by the end of this experiment. These results suggest that 4-5 months of age is a critical period for pubertal changes and testosterone plays an important role in the initiation of puberty and sexual maturity of Tanyang ram lambs in China. In addition, a single shot GnRH immunization at 3 months, acting as an alternative to surgical castration, is a practical method for Chinese Tanyang ram lambs, and provides animal welfare benefits.  相似文献

Eighteen purebred Yorkshire boars, reared outdoors on concrete, were randomly assigned in equal numbers to three age groups (150 +/- 7, 200 +/- 7 and 250 +/- 7 days of age) for the purpose of examining endogenous testosterone concentrations over a 24-hr period. Blood was obtained at 30-min intervals for 24 hr, and plasma testosterone concentrations were quantitated by radioimmunoassay. For each set of 24-hr samples, mean concentration (C), frequency (F) and magnitude (M) of secretory spikes of testosterone were determined. There was no difference (P>.10) in C, F and M across the three age groups. When averaged over ages, testosterone mean (+/- SEM) for C, F and M was 1.4 +/- .1 ng/ml, 2.9 +/- .5 and 3.0 +/- .3 ng/ml, respectively. The results suggest that testosterone secretory patterns are established in boars by five months of age and that these patterns may be influenced by degree of daylinght.  相似文献

Physiological concentrations (10(-10) M) of L-thyroxine and triiodo-L-thyronine were found in vitro to enhance Ca2+-ATPase activity in reticulocyte-enriched red cell membranes from female rabbits and to inhibit this enzyme in the male reticulocyte. Cross-incubation experiments with reticulocyte-enriched red cells and plasma from the opposite sex demonstrated that this sex-specific membrane response to thyroid hormone was transferable by plasma. Similar experiments with intact reticulocytes exposed to physiological concentrations (10(-11) M) of testosterone and 17 beta-estradiol indicated that the plasma factors were the sex steroids. That is, incubation in vitro with testosterone converted female-source reticulocytes to male-type responsiveness to thyroid hormone (inhibition of Ca2+-ATPase activity); incubation with estradiol converted male-source reticulocyte-enriched red cells to female-type responsiveness (stimulation by iodothyronines of membrane Ca2+-ATPase activity). Similar results were obtained when reticulocyte ghosts were incubated with testosterone and 17 beta-estradiol prior to determination of membrane enzyme activity. Etiocholanolone (5 beta-androstan-3 alpha-ol-17-one) and testosterone were equipotent, but 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone had little activity in this system. Estrone and estradiol were equipotent, but estriol had no permissive effect on the stimulation by iodothyronine of reticulocyte membrane Ca2+-ATPase activity. Expression of thyroid hormone action in vitro on Ca2+-ATPase activity in the rabbit reticulocyte is determined at the membrane level by testosterone and estrogen. The structure-activity relationships of the sex steroids for this membrane action are different than those reported for nuclear actions of the steroids.  相似文献

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder characterized by dysmorphic features, obesity, hypogonadism, hypotonia and mental retardation. Obesity has been linked to insulin resistance and the latter has also been associated with premature adrenarche. Since up to date a controlled study to investigate adrenarche and its hormonal regulation was lacking in PWS, our aim was to assess whether prepubertal PWS patients develop premature adrenarche and its relationship with markers of insulin sensitivity. Fourteen prepubertal children with PWS (6 M, 8 F) and 10 non-syndromal simple obese matched controls (5 M, 5 F) participated (mean age: 7.62 +/- 1.84 years). A fasting blood sample was obtained for adrenal and ovarian androgens, sex hormone binding globulin, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1, leptin, adiponectin and a lipid profile. Thereafter an oral glucose tolerance test was performed. PWS patients were smaller at birth and a higher proportion displayed premature pubarche. No differences were found in testosterone, androstenedione, sex hormone binding globulin, free androgen index, homeostatic model assessment-IR, 2-hour insulin, leptin or adiponectin levels. 17-hydroxyprogesterone and DHEAS levels however, were significantly higher in PWS. IGF-I levels were significantly lower in PWS and correlated significantly with height SDS (p < 0.05). In conclusion, a higher proportion of premature adrenarche in our PW patients was observed, which was not explained by differences in insulin sensitivity or plasma levels of adipokines and IGF-I.  相似文献

Plasma concentrations of testosterone were estimated in normal men, in patients before treatment for prostatic cancer, and in patients who had had various forms of endocrine treatment for prostatic carcinoma. There was no decline in plasma testosterone levels with age. Patients with non-metastatic disease had levels similar to those of normal controls, but in advanced metastatic disease the levels were low. After orchidectomy the plasma testosterone level fell to that found in normal women. In every patient stilboestrol in doses as small as 1 mg three times a day suppressed plasma testosterone at first to negligible amounts, irrespective of the clinical response. Subsequently a small but significant rise in the concentration was always observed over a period of six months'' oestrogen therapy. Pituitary ablation with yttrium-90 lowered the plasma testosterone concentration again to negligible amounts in patients who had been on stilboestrol. In advanced metastatic disease this was often associated with relief of pain. Preliminary studies with aminoglutethimide indicate that it can produce biochemical and clinical effects similar to those of pituitary ablation.  相似文献

The testosterone plasma level was determined in 5 groups: 1. in 69 normal juveniles and 85 fertile males at the age of 11 to 45 years, 2. in 42 patients with hypospadia or epispadia aged 11 to 25 years, 3. in 72 males with unilateral cryptorchidism at the age of 11 to 45 years, 4. in 83 males with bilateral cryptorchidism aged 11 to 45 years and 5. in 106 patients with Klinefelter's syndrome at the age of 16 to 45 years. A pubertal increase of the testosterone plasma level was found to begin in subjects with cryptorchidism or Klinefelter's syndrome at a similar age as in the control group. However, as early as at the age of 13 to 14 years decreased testosterone values were found in the patients as compared to normal juveniles. Between 19 and 20 years, the plasma testosterone level was significantly decreased in all patient-groups as compared to the controls of similar age. In adulthood, plasma testosterone concentrations in the patient groups were observed to be 4 to 6 ng/ml without significant age-dependent changes, which are characteristic of normospermic males. Different degrees of clinical symptoms indicating androgen deficiency found in various patient groups despite similar androgen levels in adulthood suggest a different responsiveness of their target organs to androgens.  相似文献

Leydig-cell function was assessed in 27 men with acute mumps orchitis by measuring plasma testosterone concentrations before and after the administration of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG). The test was also performed on groups of patients with other febrile viral infections and mumps without orchitis and on healthy euspermic men. The concentrations both before and after HCG were significantly lower in patients in the acute phase of mumps—but not in those with other viral infections and mumps without orchitis—than in the healthy men. Basal concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH) were significantly increased in patients with acute mumps orchitis, while an exaggerated response to LH-releasing hormone was noted in four patients after the acute phase of the disease. Raised plasma LH concentrations were also found in several patients with viral infections, including mumps without orchitis. There appeared to be no particular merit of any of the treatments used (aspirin, prednisolone, and cold baths). In patients reevaluated three to five and 10 to 12 months after the acute phase of their disease the basal testosterone concentrations were similar to those of the healthy men, but several of the patients showed a severely impaired response to HCG. Mean basal FSH and LH concentrations were significantly increased 10 to 12 months after the acute phase, while the mean LH concentration was also raised at three to five months. It is concluded that mumps orchitis impairs Leydigcell function during the acute phase of the disease but may also have a more permanent damaging effect, similar to that found in the germinal epithelium.  相似文献

Adult male rats were exposed or sham-exposed to 60-Hz electric fields without spark discharges, ozone, or significant levels of other secondary variables. No effects were observed on body weights or plasma hormone levels after 30 days of exposure at an effective field strength of 68 kV/m. After 120 days of exposure (effective field strength = 64 kV/m), effects were inconsistent, with significant reductions in body weight and plasma levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and corticosterone occurring in one replicate experiment but not in the other. Plasma testosterone levels were significantly reduced after 120 days of exposure in one experiment, with a similar but not statistically significant reduction in a replicate experiment. Weanling rats, exposed or sham-exposed in electric fields with an effective field strength of 80 kV/m from 20 to 56 days of age, exhibited identical or closely similar growth trends in body and organ weights. Hormone levels in exposed and sham-exposed groups were also similar. However, there was an apparent phase shift between the two groups in the cyclic variations of concentrations of hormones at different stages of development, particularly with respect to follicle-stimulating hormone and corticosterone. We concluded that 60-Hz electric fields may bring about subtle changes in the endocrine system of rats, and that these changes may be related to alterations in episodic rhythms.  相似文献
