Plasma testosterone, androstenedione and LH concentrations were measured at regular intervals from birth to 500 days of age in bulls; bulls treated with estradiol for 3 weeks after birth; steers and heifers. Behavioural observations were conducted at various periods over 12 months. Apart from a possible quietening effect at 4 months of age, neonatal estrogen administration had no effect on the aggressive behaviour of young bulls. There were no differences among the groups in testosterone levels for the first 60 days but by day 100 the levels in the normal and estrogenized bulls had risen significantly. No differences in androstenedione concentration occurred among the groups. Plasma LH decreased for the first 7 days in the bulls, steers and heifers then rose gradually, however a marked rise occurred in the steers from day 28. The neonatal decline in plasma LH was extended during the period of estrogen administration.  相似文献

Growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) concentrations in blood plasma of 18 crossbred cattle (six bulls, six steers, and six heifers) were measured over an 8-hr period. One week later at slaughter, IGF-1 production by liver slices and IGF-1 mRNA concentrations in skeletal muscle and liver were measured. Bulls had higher (P less than 0.05) mean plasma GH and GH peak amplitudes (P less than 0.01) than heifers, and values for steers were intermediate between bulls and heifers. Baseline GH concentrations and number of GH peaks were not significantly different for the three groups. Bulls had 1.6-fold (P less than 0.01) and 3.0-fold (P less than 0.01) greater liver IGF-1 mRNA concentrations than steers or heifers, respectively, whereas the steers had 1.8-fold (P less than 0.05) greater IGF-1 mRNA in liver than heifers. Production of IGF-1 by liver slices was greater (P less than 0.05) in bulls than steers or heifers. Bulls had 1.3-fold greater plasma IGF-1 than steers (P less than 0.01), whereas steers had 1.8-fold greater plasma IGF-1 than heifers (P less than 0.01). There were no significant differences in concentrations of skeletal muscle IGF-1 mRNA between the three groups of animals. Liver IGF-1 mRNA, liver IGF-1 production, and plasma IGF-1 were all significantly correlated with gain and mean GH peak amplitude, but not with GH baseline, GH peak frequency, or concentrations of T3 and T4. Concentrations if IGF-1 mRNA in skeletal muscle were not correlated to gain or any parameter of the GH profile. Plasma concentrations of T3 were significantly (P less than 0.05) negatively correlated to plasma GH baseline concentrations. Muscle IGF-1 mRNA concentration was negatively related to plasma T4 and T3. The results of this study suggest that the cascade of events starting with secretion of GH from the pituitary, expression of liver IGF-1 mRNA, and secretion of IGF-1 by the liver are important phenomena for growth of cattle.  相似文献

Climate change is producing an increase on extreme weather events around the world such as flooding, drought and extreme ambient temperatures impacting animal production and animal welfare. At present, there is a lack of studies addressing the effects of climatic conditions associated with energy intake in finishing cattle in South American feed yards. Therefore, two experiments were conducted to assess the effects of environmental variables and level of metabolizable energy intake above maintenance requirements (MEI) on performance and carcass quality of steers. In each experiment (winter and summer), steers were fed with 1.85 or 2.72 times of their requirements of metabolizable energy of maintenance. A total of 24 crossbred steers per experiment were used and located in four pens (26.25 m2/head) equipped with a Calan Broadbent Feeding System. Animals were fed with the same diet within each season, varying the amount offered to adjust the MEI treatments. Mud depth, mud scores, tympanic temperature (TT), environmental variables, average daily gain, respiration rates and carcass characteristics plus three thermal comfort indices were collected. Data analysis considered a factorial arrangement (Season and MEI). In addition, a repeated measures analysis was performed for TT and respiration rate. Mean values of ambient temperature, solar radiation and comfort thermal indices were greater in the summer experiment as expected (P<0.005). The mean values of TT were higher in steers fed with higher MEI and also in the summer season. The average daily gain was greater during summer v. winter (1.10±0.11 v. 0.36±0.06) kg/day, also when steers were fed 2.72 v. 1.85 MEI level (0.89±0.12 v. 0.57±0.10) kg/day. In summer, respiration rate increased in 41.2% in the afternoon. In winter, muddy conditions increased with time of feeding, whereas wind speed and rainfall had significant effects on TT and average daily gain. We conclude that MEI and environmental variables have direct effects on the physiology and performance of steers, including TT and average daily gain, particularly during the winter. In addition, carcass characteristics were affected by season but not by the level of MEI. Finally, due to the high variability of data as well as the small number of animals assessed in these experiments, more studies on carcass characteristics under similar conditions are required.  相似文献

Equations for predicting the meat, fat and bone proportions in beef carcasses using the European Union carcass classification scores for conformation and fatness, and hindquarter composition were developed and their accuracy was tested using data from 662 cattle. The animals included bulls, steers and heifers, and comprised of Holstein–Friesian, early- and late-maturing breeds × Holstein–Friesian, early-maturing × early-maturing, late-maturing × early-maturing and genotypes with 0.75 or greater late-maturing ancestry. Bulls, heifers and steers were slaughtered at 15, 20 and 24 months of age, respectively. The diet offered before slaughter includes grass silage only, grass or maize silage plus supplementary concentrates, or concentrates offered ad libitum plus 1 kg of roughage dry matter per head daily. Following the slaughter, carcasses were classified mechanically for conformation and fatness (scale 1 to 15), and the right side of each carcass was dissected into meat, fat and bone. Carcass conformation score ranged from 4.7 to 14.4, 5.4 to 10.9 and 2.0 to 12.0 for bulls, heifers and steers, respectively; the corresponding ranges for fat score were 2.7 to 11.5, 3.2 to 11.3 and 2.8 to 13.3. Prediction equations for carcass meat, fat and bone proportions were developed using multiple regression, with carcass conformation and fat score both included as continuous independent variables. In a separate series of analyses, the independent variable in the model was the proportion of the trait under investigation (meat, fat or bone) in the hindquarter. In both analyses, interactions between the independent variables and gender were tested. The predictive ability of the developed equations was assed using cross-validation on all 662 animals. Carcass classification scores accounted for 0.73, 0.67 and 0.71 of the total variation in carcass meat, fat and bone proportions, respectively, across all 662 animals. The corresponding values using hindquarter meat, fat and bone in the model were 0.93, 0.87 and 0.89, respectively. The bias of the prediction equations when applied across all animals was not different from zero, but bias did exist among some of the genotypes of animals present. In conclusion, carcass classification scores and hindquarter composition are accurate and efficient predictors of carcass meat, fat and bone proportions.  相似文献

Sexual development and reproductive function were studied in 22 Angus × Charolais and 17 Angus bulls from 6 to 16 mo of age. Associations of average daily gain (ADG) and body weight with ages at puberty and at maturity (satisfactory semen quality), scrotal circumference, paired-testes volume and weight, testicular vascular cone diameter and fat thickness, scrotal temperature, sperm production and morphology, and testicular histology, were determined. There were no significant correlations between cumulative average daily gain and any of the end points investigated. Body weight at various ages was negatively correlated with ages at puberty and maturity in Angus × Charolais bulls, positively correlated with paired-testes weight in Angus × Charolais and Angus bulls, and positively correlated with seminiferous tubule volume in Angus bulls (P < 0.05). Semen quality improved gradually with age and the interval between puberty and maturity (mean ± SD; 309.4 ± 29.7 and 357 ± 42 days of age) was approximately 50 days. Age, weight, scrotal circumference, and paired-testes volume were all good predictors of pubertal and mature status, with moderate to high sensitivity and specificity (71.6% to 92.4%). In summary, growth rate between 6 and 16 mo of age did not affect sexual development and reproductive function in beef bulls. However, greater body weight at various ages was associated with reduced age at puberty and maturity, and with larger testes at 16 mo of age, indicating that improved nutrition might be beneficial, but only when offered before 6 mo of age. Average daily gains of approximately 1 to 1.6 kg/day did not result in excessive fat accumulation in the scrotum, increased scrotal temperature, or reduction in sperm production and semen quality, and could be considered “safe” targets for growing beef bulls.  相似文献

Pen-O-Blocks were easily installed in 15 bulls. Libido appeared to be unaffected. However, with the exception of one bull, infections occurred, or the penis bypassed the block, or the pin broke, and in 14 tests the Pen-O-Blocks were removed within 5 weeks of installation. Recovery from infection following removal of the device was rapid and uneventful.Eight bulls had their penes deviated between 2 weeks and 4 months of age. Four of these also were castrated and implanted with androgens at 12 months of age. Semen quality and libido in the deviated bulls were normal.Bulls and steers were equipped with Chin Ball mating devices. Bulls generally were more effective than steers in detecting estrus. When placed in pens 24 hours per day with 20 heifers each, one bull detected 97% and another bull detected 100% of the potential estruses during a period of two months. An observer watching for .5 hours each morning and each late afternoon detected 74%.While steers were less effective, they were more docile than the bulls. Thus, with selection of active animals and adjustment of hormone therapy, implanted steers may be successful detectors of estrus with minimal danger to the owner. Reproductive development in the androgen-treated steers was delayed but maturation of the penis had occurred in steers slaughtered at 31 months of age. Body weight gains of steers tended to be accelerated during periods when they had implants.  相似文献

The relationship of heifer size, calf size and sire on dystocia was studied in approximately one thousand Angus, Hereford X Angus and Charolais heifers bred to Angus, Hereford and Charolais bulls. Heifers were weighed and pelvic measurements taken 35 days post breeding, at midgestation, and on a random group of 135 heifers two weeks prior to calving. Dystocia score, calf birth weight, calf body length, calf hip width and calf sex were recorded at calving.Correlation coefficients for calf traits indicate that birth weight and birth weight to body measurement ratios were the most highly correlated variables with dystocia score. For traits of the dam, pelvic area was the most highly correlated variable to dystocia score, while dam weight had a low and nonsignificant correlation.Sires experiencing a higher than average incidence of dystocia had calves that were larger for all measures of body size. Individual sire differences for dystocia indicate a large number of calves and an accurate randomization of heifers bred to each bull is necessary to make precise judgements as to a bull's potential for siring easy-calving offspring.Calf size measurements were positively correlated with heifer weight and pelvic area; however, correlations tended to be low. Breed of calf, sire, heifer weight I and II and pelvic area I, II and III accounted for only 23.6% of the variation in calf birth weight.Charolais calves were larger (P<.05) and had more dystocia (P<.05) than Hereford or Angus sired calves. Hereford sired crossbred calves were larger (P<.05) and had more dystocia than Angus crossbred or straightbred calves. Angus crossbred calves were larger (P<.05) but had no more dystocia than Angus straightbred calves.Heritability estimates for calf body length (0.35) and calf hip width (0.42) indicate calf skeletal measurements were more heritable than calf birth weight (0.28).Pelvic area measurements were correlated (P<.01) with heifer weight; however, heifer weight I and II accounted for only 37% and 30% of the variability in pelvic area I and II, respectively. Average pelvic area was largest in Charolais heifers, followed by Crossbred and Angus heifers. Pelvic area growth was .275 cm2/day in Angus, .254 cm2/day in Crossbred, and .250 cm2/day in Charolais heifers.Dystocia score was most highly related to calf size and pelvic area I. Pooled over all breeds, a regression analysis showed 37% of the variability in dystocia score being accounted for by the ratio of calf birth weight to calf body length and pelvic erea I. Very little increase in the R2 value occurred by the addition of the other independent variables.Histogram analyses demonstrates that a constant level of dystocia can be maintained only if pelvic area increases in proportion to calf size. However, regardless of the size of calf, heifers that had very small pelvic openings had a high rate of dystocia, just as heifers having very large calves experienced high rates of dystocia even when they had large pelves.  相似文献

An isotope dilution experiment was conducted to determine the effect of metabolizable energy intake (MEI) as starch on whole body protein synthesis (WBPS), nitrogen (N) retention and glucose irreversible loss rate (ILR) in four adult goats (Capra hircus). The goats were fed isonitrogenous diets containing three different metabolizable energy (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 times maintenance) twice daily. Energy above maintenance was supplemented with cornstarch. The WBPS and glucose ILR during 5 to 7 h after feeding were measured by a primed-continuous infusion of [2H5]phenylalanine, [2H2]tyrosine, [2H4]tyrosine and [13C6]glucose for 4 h, with measurements of plasma concentrations of metabolites and insulin. Ruminal characteristics were also determined. Increasing MEI improved N retention, despite decreased digestible N. Increasing MEI decreased ruminal pH and ammonia nitrogen. In plasma, decreased urea N, increased total amino N and tyrosine, and trends for increases in phenylalanine and insulin resulted from increasing MEI. Increasing MEI increased ILR of glucose, phenylalanine and tyrosine, and hydroxylation rate of phenylalanine and WBPS. We conclude that in goats increasing MEI as starch enhances WBPS in the absorptive state and N retention, despite a decrease in digestible N. These changes are probably associated with both decreased ammonia absorption and increased amino acid absorption.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to quantify the genetic variation in carcass cuts predicted using digital image analysis in commercial cross-bred cattle. The data set comprised 38,404 steers and 14,318 heifers from commercial Irish herds. The traits investigated included the weights of lower value cuts (LVC), medium value cuts (MVC), high value cuts (HVC), very high value cuts (VHVC) and total meat weight. In addition, the weights of total fat and total bones were available on the steers. Heritability of carcass cut weights, within gender, was estimated using an animal linear model, whereas genetic and phenotypic correlations among cuts were estimated using a sire linear model. Carcass weight was included as a covariate in all models. In the steers, heritability ranged from 0.13 (s.e. = 0.02) for VHVC to 0.49 (s.e. = 0.03) for total bone weight, and in the heifers heritability ranged from 0.15 (s.e. = 0.04) for MVC to 0.72 (s.e. = 0.06) for total meat weight. The coefficient of genetic variation for the different cuts varied from 1.4% to 3.6%. Genetic correlations between the different cut weights were all positive and ranged from 0.45 (s.e. = 0.08) to 0.89 (s.e. = 0.03) in the steers, and from 0.47 (s.e. = 0.14) to 0.82 (s.e. = 0.06) in the heifers. Genetic correlations between the wholesale cut weights and carcass conformation ranged from 0.32 (s.e. = 0.06) to 0.45 (s.e. = 0.07) in the steers, and from 0.10 (s.e. = 0.12) to 0.38 (s.e. = 0.09) in the heifers. Genetic correlations between the same wholesale cut traits in steers and heifers ranged from 0.54 (s.e. = 0.14) for MVC to 0.79 (s.e. = 0.06) for total meat weight; genetic correlations between carcass weight and carcass classification for conformation and fat score in both genders varied from 0.80 to 0.87. The existence of genetic variation in carcass cut traits, coupled with the routine availability of predicted cut weights from digital image analysis, clearly shows the potential to genetically improve carcass value.  相似文献

Sixty zebu heifers were divided into three equal groups and reared on isocaloric diets but on different levels of protein. The protein levels were 19.17% (high), 13.37% (medium; NRC recommendations) and 8.3% (low). All animals were examined weekly per rectum for the presence of follicles and corpora lutea and also checked daily for standing heat. The presence of a mature corpus luteum was considered to indicate the attainment of puberty. Body weight and pelvic dimensions were taken at biweekly intervals. Intact bulls were introduced to heifers after they reached puberty and once they reached 200 kg live weight. Pregnancy diagnosis was carried out at 60, 90 and 120 days following introduction of bulls. Mean age at puberty for heifers in the high protein group (570.4 days), medium protein group (640.8 days) and low protein group (704.2 days) differed significantly (P<0.05). body weight at puberty for heifers in the high, medium and low protein groups was 207.1, 187.0 and 161.7 kg, respectively (P<0.05). Pelvic size at puberty was not influenced by the nutritional level. Conception rates of heifers in the three groups were influenced by level of nutrition. Pregnancy rates for the high protein group (58.8%), medium protein group (27.8%), and low protein group (16.7%) by 90-day post-breeding period were significantly different (P<0.05), but body weight at conception between the groups did not differ significantly. The results show that increasing the protein level in the diet is a means of improving the reproductive performance of zebu cattle.  相似文献

The obese gene was hypothesized as a candidate gene for fat characteristics in beef cattle. The BM 1500 microsatellite, near the obese gene, was characterized in 158 purebred beef bulls for which carcass trait information was available. Four breeds were included in the analyses—Angus, Charolais, Hereford, and Simmental. Four alleles were found. Lengths were approximately 138, 147, 149, and 140 bp with genotypic frequencies of 0.47, 0.44, 0.09, and 0.003 respectively. The carcass traits %rib fat, %rib lean, average fat, and grade fat were found to be significantly associated with the different alleles. The presence of the 138-bp allele in the genotype of an animal is correlated with higher levels of fat, whereas the 147-bp allele has the opposite effect. The 149-bp allele was found in low numbers, and a homozygote was never identified. Hereford and Angus bulls had the greatest frequencies of 138-bp alleles (Hereford = 0.57, Angus = 0.59), while Charolais and Simmental had a greater proportion of 147-bp alleles (Charolais = 0.54, Simmental = 0.58). This information may aid cattle producers in selecting cattle for markets that differ in the amount of fat required. Received: 27 October 1997 / Accepted: 23 January 1998  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine if testosterone influences sebum output (SO) and composition (SC) in different genotypes of cattle. There were significant breed differences in plasma testosterone levels and SO but no relationship was established between the two variables. Castration of neonatal and adult bulls did not affect their subsequent SO or SC. Testosterone treatment of steers failed to change SO. There were no differences in SO or SC between bulls and heifers. The results showed that testosterone does not influence sebum production in bovines and that there was a strong genetic control over SO independent of sex.  相似文献

The use of polynomial functions to describe the average growth trajectory and covariance functions of Nellore and MA (21/32 Charolais+11/32 Nellore) young bulls in performance tests was studied. The average growth trajectories and additive genetic and permanent environmental covariance functions were fit with Legendre (linear through quintic) and quadratic B-spline (with two to four intervals) polynomials. In general, the Legendre and quadratic B-spline models that included more covariance parameters provided a better fit with the data. When comparing models with the same number of parameters, the quadratic B-spline provided a better fit than the Legendre polynomials. The quadratic B-spline with four intervals provided the best fit for the Nellore and MA groups. The fitting of random regression models with different types of polynomials (Legendre polynomials or B-spline) affected neither the genetic parameters estimates nor the ranking of the Nellore young bulls. However, fitting different type of polynomials affected the genetic parameters estimates and the ranking of the MA young bulls. Parsimonious Legendre or quadratic B-spline models could be used for genetic evaluation of body weight of Nellore young bulls in performance tests, whereas these parsimonious models were less efficient for animals of the MA genetic group owing to limited data at the extreme ages.  相似文献

Background

The fat components of red meat products have been of interest to researchers due to the health aspects of excess fat consumption by humans. We hypothesized that differences in protein expression have an impact on adipose tissue formation during beef cattle development and growth. Therefore, in this study we evaluated the differences in the discernable proteome of subcutaneous adipose tissues of 35 beef crossbred steers [Charolais × Red Angus (CHAR) (n = 13) and Hereford × Angus (HEAN) (n = 22)] with different back fat (BF) thicknesses. The goal was to identify specific protein markers that could be associated with adipose tissue formation in beef cows.  相似文献

Growth rate of cattle depends on their genetic makeup and nutrient intake. Moreover, increased growth rate may lead to increased amino acid (AA) requirements. Therefore, we evaluated the AA content of the empty body and estimated the net AA and energy requirements of purebred and crossbred beef bulls fed rations of different dietary CP concentrations. We performed a comparative slaughter experiment with 24 Nellore and 24 Angus × Nellore (A × N) bulls (8 months; initial shrunk BW: Nellore = 208.0 ± 12.78 kg; A × N = 221.9 ± 14.16 kg). Eight bulls (four Nellore and four A × N) were designated as the reference group, eight bulls (four Nellore and four A × N) were fed to maintenance level and 32 bulls (16 Nellore and 16 A × N) were fed ad libitum. The 32 bulls fed ad libitum were distributed using a completely randomized design in a 2 × 3 factorial scheme with two genetic groups (Nellore or A × N) and three dietary CP contents (100, 120 or 140 g CP/kg DM), being four groups with five bulls and two groups with six bulls. The experimental period lasted for 224 days. There were no interactions (P ≥ 0.056) between the dietary CP contents and genetic groups for any of the response variables. The dietary CP contents did not affect (P ≥ 0.062) the AA content in the empty body (g/kg empty BW [EBW]), with exception for Tryptophan (P = 0.027, linear effect). The dietary CP contents did not affect (P ≥ 0.051) AA content in the empty body (g/100 g of CP), with exception for Alanine (P = 0.013) that responded quadratically to dietary CP increase. The equations to estimate the net Lysine (Lys) and Methionine (Met) requirements (g/100 g of CP) were: Lys = 5.1 × EBW0.0594 and Met = 1.7 × EBW0.0255. Metabolizable Lys and Met to metabolizable energy (ME) ratios decreased as bulls EBW increased. Also, the metabolizable protein to ME ratio decreased as bulls EBW increased. In conclusion, the present study provides useful information regarding net and metabolizable requirements of AA of purebred and crossbred beef bulls. In the future, after the validation of the equations, these results can be used to calculate the AA requirements for growth of purebred and crossbred beef bulls. Nevertheless, it is important to highlight that the small sample size was one limitation of this present experiment.  相似文献

The objectives were to determine if exposure of 12 mo old peri-puberal beef heifers to androgenized steers for 35 d hastened puberty, and if the response was related to the physical proximity between males and females and to heifer's initial body weight. Hereford x Aberdeen Angus heifers (n = 131), 12 mo old, were assigned to two treatments: 1) Exposed group, exposed to androgenized steers from Day 0 to Day 35 (E, n = 66); or 2) Control group, isolated from the steers and other males (C, n = 65). Cyclic activity was determined through estrous behavior detection (twice daily) and weekly ultrasound imaging to detect a CL. For each Exposed heifer, an association index (with males) was determined thrice weekly, based on the distance to androgenized steers every 10 min for 4 h (until cyclic activity began). Data were analyzed according to heifer's initial body weight, which was categorized into three ranges (low, medium, and high, designated LW, MW, and HW, respectively). The cumulative proportion of cyclic heifers was greater for Exposed than Control heifers as of Day 21. By the end of the exposure period, more Exposed than Control heifers had attained puberty (16/66 vs. 2/65; P < 0.001). Within the HW classification, more Exposed than Control heifers became puberal (11/20 vs. 2/21; P = 0.002). However, there were no differences between MW and LW in the proportions of heifers that reached puberty. Association index in Exposed heifers was greater in HW than in MW and LW (0.10 ± 0.09 vs. 0.06 ± 0.03 and 0.06 ± 0.04; P < 0.05), and in heifers that began cyclic activity compared to those that did not in the MW heifers (0.09 ± 0.05 vs. 0.05 ± 0.02; P = 0.01) and tended to be different in the HW treatment (0.12 ± 0.10 vs. 0.06 ± 0.02; P = 0.09). In conclusion, exposure of peri-puberal beef heifers to androgenized steers for 35 d advanced puberty in heavier heifers; an earlier response occurred in heifers with greater proximity to androgenized steers.  相似文献

Physicochemical characteristics were determined in the longissimus lumborum muscle, after 8 days of ageing of steers (n=12) and bulls (n=12) from Mertolenga breed slaughtered directly from pasture (day 0) or after a finishing period of 50, 100 and 150 days in a feed-lot facility. Bulls and steers presented similar live weight (averaging 388 kg), carcass weight (CW; averaging 213 kg), dressing percentage (averaging 60%), carcass fatness (11.9% CW) and carcass fat thickness (averaging 3.03 mm). Live weight, CW, carcass fatness and fat thickness increased along time-on-feed. Gender only had a negligible effect on meat characteristics, with b* and h* being the only parameters of colour affected by gender, also presenting a significant interaction gender×time-on-feed. Nevertheless, both the genders presented a high-quality grade concerning tenderness (Warner–Bratzler shear force (WBSF)). L* increased until 50 days on feed and decreased afterwards, whereas a* and C* values increased along time-on-feed. Pigment content was also affected by time-on-feed and showed a gender×time-on-feed interaction. Beef colour became darker and redder along time-on-feed, but still in a colour range highly acceptable by Portuguese consumers. Despite the increase in intramuscular fat and myofibrillar fragmentation index, as well as the decrease in collagen content of steers and bulls along time-on-feed, it did not affect the tenderness/hardness, indicating a small effect of time-on-feed in meat characteristics. Despite only small differences in carcass characteristics and meat-quality parameters that have been noticed along time-on-feed, those differences were only significant after 100 days on feed. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed. The first PC axis (39.6% of the total variance) included colour variables a*, b* and C*, and carcass fatness, fat thickness, CW and live weight, whereas the second one (12.7% of the total variance) included h*, cooking losses and dressing-out. The principal component (PC) analysis confirmed the lack of differences between bulls and steers and indicates a differentiation of the first two periods of feeding (0 and 50 days on feed) from the two latter (100 and 150 days on feed) periods of feeding.  相似文献

A 2 × 3 factorial design was utilized to ascertain the effects of three dietary crude protein (CP) concentrations on performance, carcass characteristics, and serum urea nitrogen (SUN) concentration in steers and heifers. Animals were blocked by gender (n = 9) and body weight (BW; n = 3/gender), randomly assigned to a diet containing 110, 125 or 140 g/kg dietary CP (n = 6), subjected to a growing period of 56, 84 or 112 d, depending on start BW, and a finishing period of 84 d. Animals were weighed and bled at 28 d intervals and daily dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), and gain to feed (G:F) were calculated and SUN was analyzed as a repeated measure throughout the study. Following slaughter, carcass data was collected for hot carcass weight (HCW), dressing percent (DP), kidney, pelvic and heart fat (KPH), 12th rib backfat (BF), loin muscle (LM) area, marbling score (MS), and yield grade (YG). Growing steers and heifers were programmed to gain 1.02 and 0.91 kg/d, respectively. Therefore, heifers consumed less than steers and steers gained more than heifers (P<0.01) with no differences in feed efficiency. Dietary CP treatment did not effect DMI, but did result in a quadratic (P=0.04) increase in ADG; thereby quadratically (P=0.06) and linearly (P=0.08) increasing final BW, and G:F, respectively. Finishing heifers consumed and gained less than steers (P<0.01), had lighter HCW (P<0.01) and greater DP (P=0.01) and LM area (P=0.01) than steers. DMI (P=0.02), ADG (P=0.05), HCW (P=0.08), and DP (P=0.06) reacted quadratically with increasing dietary CP. HCW (P=0.02) increased linearly with increasing dietary CP. G:F, KPH, BF, LM area, MS and YG was not affected by dietary CP concentration and G:F, KPH, BF, MS, and YG did not differ between genders. However, there was a gender × dietary CP interaction (P=0.01) for G:F. Steers were the most efficient at 125 g/kg dietary CP, while heifers were most efficient at 140 g/kg dietary CP. Gender had no effect on SUN concentrations, but SUN increased linearly (P<0.01) with increasing dietary CP concentrations. In conclusion, quadratic responses in DMI and ADG indicate that a 125 g/kg dietary CP concentration is optimal for either steers or heifers during the finishing period.  相似文献

To determine effects of biostimulation (BIO) and dietary supplementation (BIO+S) on pubertal age and pregnancy rates, Nelore heifers (n=392) were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups (n=98/group). All animals were in tropical environmental conditions, in the middle-west region of Brazil, grazing in pastures of Brachiaria brizantha, cv. Marandu; Panicum Maximum, cv. Tanzania and Brachiaria humidícula. The heifers of the BIO group were kept in the presence of bulls while being maintained on pasture; the animals in the BIO+S group were kept in the presence of bulls while being managed on pasture and were fed a diet with greater energy and protein content to produce 0.49 kg of BW gain/day; the animals in control group (the NBIO) were kept away from bulls and under pasture conditions; and the animals in the NBIO+S group were kept away from bulls, were maintained on pasture, and were fed the same diet as the BIO+S group. Heifers were bred at 22-23 months of age, and pregnancy diagnosis was made 45 days after the end of the breeding season. There were differences (P<0.05) between groups regarding pubertal heifers up to 19 months (NPH), final body weight (FBW) and pregnancy rates (P<0.01), with an advantage for the animals in the BIO and BIO+S groups. Although the effect of a diet with greater protein and energy content was not clear in this experiment, the exposure of heifers to a male during the prepubertal period decreased age at the first breeding season, resulting in a significant reduction in age of first pregnancy in Nelore heifers kept under extensive management systems in a tropical environment.  相似文献

The objectives of the two experiments were to determine the respective effects and interactions of diet type (grass v. maize diets) and physical activity (grazing v. zero grazing) on lipogenic enzyme activities and adipose cell size in subcutaneous, perirenal and intermuscular adipose tissues and on plasma metabolites and hormones in Charolais steers. After weaning, the steers were assigned to two (Experiment 1, n = 24) or three (Experiment 2, n = 24) groups, with steers in Experiment 1 grazed grass or indoors maize-silage-fed and steers in Experiment 2 grazed grass, indoors cut grass- or indoors maize-silage-fed. Both experiments lasted for 23 months. All grass-fed animals were fed grass silage during the two winter seasons. During the two summer seasons, steers fed on grass were rotationally grazed on a perennial rye-grass pasture while steers fed on cut grass were fed indoors on freshly cut grass alone. Steers fed on maize silage were fed maize silage indoors during the entire experiment. All animals were reared for similar body weight and growth rates and slaughtered at the same age (31 to 32 months). Activities of lipogenic enzymes were significantly lower in the three adipose tissue sites of steers fed cut grass compared with maize silage, although there were less-marked effects in intermuscular adipose tissue. Plasma insulin and glucose concentrations were also lower in steers fed cut grass whereas plasma leptin concentration was similar. As body fat content was not affected by nutritional treatment, it is suggested that the decrease in potential lipogenic activity was associated with the nature of the diet and not to differences in available net energy. In other respects, grazed grass compared with eating cut grass did not affect lipogenic enzyme activities but decreased plasma leptin concentrations in the older steers and increased plasma non-esterified fatty acids and glucose concentrations without affecting adipose tissue weight and adipose cell size.  相似文献
