1. The literature on molecular properties and physiological role of aspartic proteinases in fishes and aquatic invertebrates has been reviewed. 2. Pepsins have not been detected in invertebrates, and apparently cathepsin D, as well as other cathepsins, act both as digestive and lysosomal enzymes in many of these animals. The molecular properties of invertebrate cathepsin D correspond with cathepsin D in fishes and mammalians. 3. Fishes with a true stomach have pepsinogen secretion. Fish pepsins have higher pH optimum and are less stable in strong acid conditions than mammalian pepsins. They are very efficient at low temperatures, but less thermostable than mammalian pepsins. 4. Many fishes have two significantly different pepsins: Pepsin I and Pepsin II, which digest haemoglobin at a maximal rate in the pH ranges 3-4 and 2-3 respectively. Usually the pI of Pepsin I is in the range 6.5-7, whereas pI of Pepsin II is about 4. 5. Fish Pepsin I and cathepsin D have very similar molecular properties, and a hypothesis proposing that cathepsin D is the ancestor enzyme of aspartic proteinases in higher animals is presented.  相似文献

The end product of purine metabolism varies from species to species. The degradation of purines to urate is common to all animal species, but the degradation of urate is much less complete in higher animals. The comparison of subcellular distribution, intraperoxisomal localization forms, molecular structures, and some other properties of urate-degrading enzymes (urate oxidase, allantoinase, and allantoicase) among animals is described. Liver urate oxidase (uricase) is located in the peroxisomes in all animals with urate oxidase. On the basis of the comparison of intraperoxisomal localization forms, mol wt, and solubility of liver urate oxidase among animals, it is suggested that amphibian urate oxidase is a transition form in the evolution of aquatic animals to land animals. Allantoinase and allantoicase are different proteins in fish liver, but the two enzymes form a complex in amphibian liver. The subcellular localization of allantoinase and allantoicase varies among fishes. Hepatic allantoinase is located both in the peroxisomes and in the cytosol in saltwater fishes, and only in the cytosol in freshwater fishes. Hepatic allantoicase is located on the outer surface of the, peroxisomal membrane in the mackerel group and in the peroxisomal matrix in the sardine group. Amphibian hepatic allantoinase-allantoicase complex is probably located in the mitochondria. On the basis of previous data, changes of allantoinase and allantoicase in molecular structure and intracellular localization during animal evolution may be as follows: Fish liver allantoinase is a single peptide with a mol wt of 54,000, and is located both in the peroxisomes and in the cytosol, or only in the cytosol. Fish liver allantoicase consists of two identical subunits with a mol wt of 48,000, and is located in the peroxisomal matrix or on the outer surface of the peroxisomal membrane. The evolution of fishes to amphibia resulted in the dissociation of allantoicase into subunits, and in the association of allantoinase with the subunit of allantoicase. This amphibian enzyme was lost by further evolution.  相似文献

Fish endocrinologists are commonly motivated to pursue their research driven by their own interests in these aquatic animals. However, the data obtained in fish studies not only satisfy their own interests but often contribute more generally to the studies of other vertebrates, including mammals. The life of fishes is characterized by the aquatic habitat, which demands many physiological adjustments distinct from the terrestrial life. Among them, body fluid regulation is of particular importance as the body fluids are exposed to media of varying salinities only across the thin respiratory epithelia of the gills. Endocrine systems play pivotal roles in the homeostatic control of body fluid balance. Judging from the habitat-dependent control mechanisms, some osmoregulatory hormones of fish should have undergone functional and molecular evolution during the ecological transition to the terrestrial life. In fact, water-regulating hormones such as vasopressin are essential for survival on the land, whereas ion-regulating hormones such as natriuretic peptides, guanylins and adrenomedullins are diversified and exhibit more critical functions in aquatic species. In this short review, we introduce some examples illustrating how comparative fish studies contribute to general endocrinology by taking advantage of such differences between fishes and tetrapods. In a functional context, fish studies often afford a deeper understanding of the essential actions of a hormone across vertebrate taxa. Using the natriuretic peptide family as an example, we suggest that more functional studies on fishes will bring similar rewards of understanding. At the molecular level, recent establishment of genome databases in fishes and mammals brings clues to the evolutionary history of hormone molecules via a comparative genomic approach. Because of the functional and molecular diversification of ion-regulating hormones in fishes, this approach sometimes leads to the discovery of new hormones in tetrapods as exemplified by adrenomedullin 2.  相似文献

Grouped carps as well as isolated fishes were shown to be uncapable to extrapolate the direction of movement of an alimentary stimulus after its disappearance from the visual field. Differences in behaviour of isolated fishes and grouped ones as well as those between the groups of different size and composition were revealed in repeated performance of the same extrapolation task. Groups of six fishes exhibited higher behavioural plasticity in comparison to isolated fishes and groups of two unlearned animals: in the former orienting-exploratory activity was higher and the process of learning more stable. At minimal group size (two animals) learning was accelerated only in the case if one of the fishes had been previously learned. Some decrease in efficiency of task solving was observed in a learned fish after its grouping with unlearned one.  相似文献

Fish welfare is still a relatively new field. As such, regulations and protocols to ensure fish welfare are currently limited and vary considerably in different jurisdictions. This is in part because of the ongoing controversy as to whether or not fish feel pain. This controversy has persisted for several years, yet veterinarians have been mostly absent from the discussion so far. This essay aims to address this issue. Here, it is argued that while this controversy has its place, it is unlikely to be resolved in the near future. Fish welfare could instead be improved by pursuing more clinically applicable research to increase knowledge of fishes’ behavior and physiology. Such research would assist in learning the optimal environment for their specific needs, as well as compiling some verified indicators of pain in fish. This would then lead to improved studies that could help to determine if and when analgesic drugs can be beneficial in fish, as they are in many other species.  相似文献

No information on the inheritance of the ability to produce sounds exists for fishes. In birds, which usually provide extensive post-hatching parental care, acoustic signals are learned in some species but are innate in others. Almost no fishes provide extensive post-hatching parental care and, consequently, the offspring have little opportunity to hear and learn sounds produced by the parents (usually the male in fishes); they may, however, be exposed to acoustic signals of conspecifics in the same habitat. We used a cyprinid, Codoma ornata, to test whether sound production is learned from the parents or whether it is innate. Fertilized eggs of this species were raised in isolation from adults. Upon maturity, these fish were tested for sound production in aggressive and reproductive contexts. Fish which had no contact with adults, and therefore no opportunity to hear the acoustic signals of their species, produced sounds that were similar to those produced by their parents, and they produced these in the same contexts. Significant differences were observed in dominant frequency for one context, with the smaller F1 fish having signals of higher frequency than parental fish. Since no opportunity for learning existed, this provided evidence that the ability to produce sounds is innate in this minnow species.  相似文献

Synopsis Fish species in many families and different trophic levels forage by following fishes and other animals. This interspecific foraging association was examined at an oceanic archipelago in the tropical West Atlantic. We recorded 27 reef fish species, two invertebrate species, and one turtle species playing the nuclear role, and 26 reef fish species acting as followers. The puddingwife wrasse following the spotted goatfish was the commonest foraging association recorded. The spotted goatfish was the nuclear fish that attracted the largest number of follower species (68% of the total number of follower species). The coney and the Noronha wrasse were the follower species that associated with the largest number of nuclear species (63 and 55% of the total number). About 20% of the reef fish species recorded in the archipelago engages in interspecific foraging associations. Substratum disturbance is a strong predictor for a fish displaying the nuclear role in the association, whereas the follower role may be predicted by carnivory. Nuclear species are diverse both in morphology and behaviour, and the nuclear role may be played either by fishes or other marine animals from invertebrates to turtles. Followers, on the other hand, comprise fishes only, which tend to display a more uniform feeding behaviour.  相似文献

Synopsis The diversity of fishes is declining worldwide, largely as the result of habitat alterations created by decisions that foster short-term economic gain. While the best arguments for preserving endangered fishes and ecosystems are non-economic arguments, they have been relatively ineffective. Therefore, it is necessary to provide economic arguments as well. Fish in general have high market values and are a vital source of protein for humans but these values have contributed more to their decline than to their conservation. Fish also have high value as indicators of the health of ecosystems which provide many services to humans, such as clean water. This has not prevented the degradation of aquatic ecosystems, although the value of fisheries has occasionally justified ecosystem protection. Existence values have been developed as a way of putting an economic value on some of the less tangible aspects of fish and ecosystems but they also make it possible to justify extinctions. If the continuous increase in the number of endangered fishes and aquatic ecosystems is to be halted, then the economic costs of environmental degradation to future generations must be included as part of the cost of doing business today (intergenerational value). Political action is needed to protect fishes and aquatic habitats against the day when more benign economic and philosophical systems become predominant.Invited essay  相似文献

Ectothermic vertebrates respond to the temperature of theirhabitat in a manner that is remarkably similar to their responseto more traditional ecological resources such as food. We reviewthe response to temperature primarily from literature on fishesin terms of ecological concepts related to niche theory andcompetition. The width of the fundamental thermal niche is about4°C when measured by a mean plus and minus one standarddeviation of the distribution of temperature occupied in a laboratorygradient. Fish of temperate freshwater appear to fall into threethermal guilds along the temperature resource axis —cold,cool, and warm water fishes. Realized thermal niches are similarin central tendency to fundamental niches, but niche width appearsto be more narrow for the realized niche in limited sample data.The success of interference competition for space with preferredtemperature is tied to social dominance in a manner analogousto food competition. Thermal niche shifts in the face of interspecificcompetition for preferred temperature appear supported by onelaboratory study. Exploitation competition in respect to temperatureseems nebulous. If animals successfully compete for their thermalniche, growth and perhaps other measures of fitness are maximized.Cost/benefit models for thermal resources and food resourceslead to similar predictions about resource use. We suggest thatviewing temperature and other niche axes in the way ecologistshave viewed food resources would be useful.  相似文献

The ray-finned fishes ('fishes') vary widely in genome size, morphology and adaptations. Teleosts, which comprise approximately 23600 species, constitute >99% of living fishes. The radiation of teleosts has been attributed to a genome duplication event, which is proposed to have occurred in an ancient teleost. But more evidence is required to support the genome-duplication hypothesis and to establish a causal relationship between additional genes and teleost diversity. Fish genomes seem to be 'plastic' in comparison with other vertebrate genomes because genetic changes, such as polyploidization, gene duplications, gain of spliceosomal introns and speciation, are more frequent in fishes.  相似文献

Macrotidal estuaries of the inner Bay of Fundy are utilized by large numbers of migratory fishes, particularly dogfish, sturgeon, herring, shad, Atlantic salmon and striped bass as well as by other migratory marine animals, many of which have large body sizes (squid, Lamnid sharks, seals and whales). Tagging experiments indicate the fishes originate from stocks derived over the entire North American Atlantic coast from Florida to Labrador. Population estimates suggest up to 2.0 times 106adult American shad (Alosa sapidissima) migrate through an individual embayment each year. These migrations are an integral part of the life history of the respective species and appear to be controlled in part by the near shore movements of ocean currents. In other regions of the world similar macrotidal estuaries exist (Cook Inlet, Alaska; Severn Estuary, U.K.) and they, like the Bay of Fundy, are linked in continuum to the local ocean currents. We propose that marine animals utilize all these regions in a manner similar to the Bay of Fundy estuaries and properly designed surveys will reveal their presence. Fish passage studies utilizing the Annapolis estuary low-head, tidal turbine on the Bay of Fundy have shown that turbine related mortality of 20–80% per passage occurs depending on fish species, fish size and the efficiency of turbine operation. We suggest that introduction of tidal turbines into open ocean current systems will cause widespread impact on marine populations resulting in significant declines in abundance.  相似文献

The occurrence of functional left-right cerebral asymmetries has been documented in a wide range of animals, suggesting that the lateralization of cognitive functions enjoys some kind of selective advantage over the bilateral control of the same functions. Here, we compared schooling performance of fishes with high or low degree of lateralization, which were obtained through selective breeding. Schools of lateralized fishes moving in a novel environment showed significantly more cohesion and coordination than schools of non-lateralized (NL) fishes. Pairs of fishes lateralized in opposite directions were as efficient as pairs of same laterality, suggesting that the performance of lateralized fishes derives from a computational advantage rather than being the consequence of a behavioural similarity among schoolmates. In schools composed of both lateralized and NL fishes, the latter were more often at the periphery of the school while lateralized fishes occupied the core, a position normally safer and energetically less expensive.  相似文献

Fish myoglobins are structurally distinct from the previously characterized mammalian myoglobins. Teleost fishes express generally lower levels of myoglobin than those found in mammals. Although the oxygen binding affinity is essentially the same as mammalian myoglobins, oxygen dissociation rates and carbon monoxide combination rates of the teleost myoglobins studied are significantly faster. Thus, the kinetic parameters of myoglobin from two Antarctic teleost species, measured close to their body temperature of −1°C, are comparable to those of mammalian myoglobins with higher body temperatures. These data suggest myoglobins from Antarctic teleosts may function at extreme environmental temperatures.  相似文献

The supply of larvae is a major determinant of population and community structure in coral reef fishes. However, spatial and temporal variation in condition (i.e. quality) of potential recruits, as well as their density (i.e. quantity), may influence survival and growth of juveniles. We conducted an experiment to test whether recent feeding history could affect growth, condition and post-recruitment survival in a Caribbean damselfish, Stegastes partitus. Fish were collected soon after settlement, and fed either low or high rations in aquaria for 7 days. Fish fed the high ration grew faster in aquaria and were in a better condition (higher total lipids and Fulton’s condition factor) at the end of the feeding period. Subsequently, we released 50 fish in 25 pairs (one fish subjected to low rations, the other to high rations) on a Bahamian coral reef and monitored survival for 10 days. Survivorship of high-ration fish was double that of low-ration fish (80 vs 40% over 10 days). However, low-ration fish that survived 10 days were of similar condition and grew at similar rates to high-ration fish, suggesting that short-term ration differences may not persist in surviving fish. Laboratory experiments showed that low-ration fish were taken by piscivorous fishes before high-ration fish, indicating that differential predation may account for survival differences. This study highlights the potential of feeding history and condition to affect the relationship between patterns of larval arrival at reefs, and subsequent juvenile and adult population densities. Placoderms are a diverse group of armoured fishes that dominated the aquatic ecosystems of the Devonian Period, 415-360 million years ago. The bladed jaws of predators such as Dunkleosteus suggest that these animals were the first vertebrates to use rapid mouth opening and a powerful bite to capture and fragment evasive prey items prior to ingestion. Here, we develop a biomechanical model of force and motion during feeding in Dunkleosteus terrelli that reveals a highly kinetic skull driven by a unique four-bar linkage mechanism. The linkage system has a high-speed transmission for jaw opening, producing a rapid expansion phase similar to modern fishes that use suction during prey capture. Jaw closing muscles power an extraordinarily strong bite, with an estimated maximal bite force of over 4400 N at the jaw tip and more than 5300 N at the rear dental plates, for a large individual (6 m in total length). This bite force capability is the greatest of all living or fossil fishes and is among the most powerful bites in animals.  相似文献

Immune response in fishes, which are ectothermic animals, depends on temperature. The optimum response is at the optimum temperature for the species. It is, however, slower in coldwater fishes, such as salmonids, and faster in warmwater fishes. Serum of fishes contains proteins very similar, but not identical, with those of mammals. Immune bodies are contained in gamma, beta, and alpha globulins. Gamma globulin is absent in some fishes. Fishes can be effectively immunized by injection of antigens, however, this is not a practical method. 巨须裂腹鱼Schizothorax macropogon和双须叶须鱼Ptychobarbus dipogon是雅鲁藏布江特有的重要经济鱼类, 具有多种人体必需脂肪酸, 营养价值高, 但其组织结构和内部性状可直接影响口感。为明确西藏2种裂腹鱼鱼肉的质构特征差异, 保护西藏裂腹鱼资源及其合理开发利用, 采用质地多面剖析法(TPA)分析了西藏雅鲁藏布江日喀则江段和林芝江段的2种裂腹鱼(巨须裂腹鱼、双须叶须鱼)的12项鱼肉质构特征指标, 主成分分析(PCA)表明雅鲁藏布江林芝江段双须叶须鱼鱼肉质构特征较日喀则江段2种裂腹鱼及林芝江段巨须裂腹鱼存在较大差异。析因分析表明可将雅鲁藏布江2种裂腹鱼鱼肉质构特征归纳为硬度、克服鱼肉表面与接触物吸引力及收缩性等3大类4个主成分指标, 前4个主成分累计方差贡献率达81.472%, 可将这3大类4个主成分指标作为雅鲁藏布江裂腹鱼鱼肉质构特征的主要判定参数。研究为后续合理开发利用雅鲁藏布江不同江段的裂腹鱼类提供科学数据。  相似文献
