Our purpose was to determine the effect of eight different combinations of contraction intensity, duration, and rest on the rate of fatigue in vastus lateralis muscle. A single combination consisted of contractions at 30 or 70% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), held for 3 or 7 s with 3- or 7-s rest intervals. Contractions were repeated until the subject could not hold the force for the requisite duration. At regular intervals during each experiment, a brief MVC, a single twitch, and the response to eight stimulation pulses at 50 Hz were elicited. The rate of fatigue was the rate of decline of MVC calculated from regression analysis. Mean rate of fatigue (n = 8) ranged from 0.3 to 25% MVC/min and was closely related (r = 0.98) to the product of the relative force and the duty cycle. Force from 50 Hz stimulation fell linearly and in parallel with MVC. Twitch force was first potentiated and then fell twice as fast as 50 Hz stimulation and MVC (p less than 0.05). Differentiated twitch contraction and relaxation rates were higher at potentiation and lower at the limit of endurance, compared with control values (p less than 0.05). The maximal electromyogram decreased 25% and the submaximal EMG increased to maximal by the end of the protocol, indicating that the entire motor unit pool had been recruited. The close relation between rate of fatigue and the force x time product probably reflects the off-setting interaction of contraction amplitude, duration, and rest interval. This occurs despite the changes in twitch characteristics and the apparent recruitment of fast fatiguing motor units.  相似文献

In anesthetized mongrel dogs we measured the blood flow in the left phrenic artery (Qdi), using an electromagnetic flow probe, before and during supramaximal phrenic nerve stimulation (pacing). This was done at constant respiratory rate (24/min) but at three different stimulation frequencies at a duty cycle of 0.4 (20, 50, and 100 Hz) and at three different duty cycles at a stimulation frequency of 50 Hz (duty cycle = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8). Qdi was unchanged during diaphragm contraction until transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) was greater than approximately 11 cmH2O, whereafter it began to decrease, reaching zero at Pdi approximately 20 cmH2O. Thus, when Pdi was greater than 21 cmH2O, all flow occurred during relaxation. Qdi averaged over the entire respiratory cycle (Qt) was less at duty cycle = 0.8 than under the other conditions. This was because of decreasing length of relaxation phase rather than a difference of relaxation phase flow (Qr), which was maximal during all conditions of phrenic stimulation. During pacing-induced fatigue, Qt actually rose slightly as Pdi fell. This was due to an increase in contraction phase flow while Qr remained constant. The relationship between Qt and tension-time index was not unique but varied according to the different combinations of duty cycle and stimulus frequency.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of metabolic acidosis and compensated metabolic acidosis on force of contraction of the diaphragm in anesthetized dogs. Mechanically ventilated animals were prepared with an open thorax. A balloon was positioned beneath the diaphragm to measure transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi), and a plaster cast was placed around the abdomen to maintain length and geometry of the diaphragm. The force of contraction was evaluated by measuring Pdi during supramaximal phrenic stimulation at different frequencies and also during spontaneous inspiratory efforts. In 13 dogs with an arterial pH (pHa) of 7.38 and arterial PCO2 (PaCO2) of 36.5 Torr, metabolic acidosis was produced by infusion of HCl until pHa equaled 6.98 and PaCO2 equaled 36.4 Torr. Pdi at all frequencies greater than 10 Hz was significantly reduced (P less than 0.05). The dogs were then hyperventilated until pHa was 7.34 and PaCO2 was 12.8 Torr. Pdi was significantly reduced again at all frequencies (P less than 0.05) except 5 Hz. The percent reduction in Pdi by compensated acidosis was significantly greater at low-frequency stimulation than at high (P less than 0.05). Similar qualitative results were observed during spontaneous inspiratory efforts where Pdi was compared at constant magnitudes of diaphragmatic electromyograms. Twitch characteristics revealed that metabolic acidosis led to a significant shortening of twitch relaxation time (P less than 0.05), and compensated metabolic acidosis added to this effect a significant decrease in twitch amplitude (P less than 0.05).  相似文献

Effects of contraction frequency and duty cycle on diaphragmatic blood flow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effects of diaphragmatic contraction frequency (no. of intermittent tetanic contractions/min) at a given tension-time index and of duty cycle (contraction time/total cycle time) on diaphragmatic blood flow were measured in anesthetized mongrel dogs during bilateral supramaximal phrenic nerve stimulation. Diaphragmatic blood flow was measured by the radionuclide-labeled microsphere method. Contraction frequency was varied between 10 and 160/min at duty cycles of 0.25 and 0.75. Diaphragmatic blood flow increased with contraction frequency from 1.47 +/- 0.13 ml X min-1 X g-1 (mean +/- SE) at an average of 18/min to 2.65 +/- 0.16 ml X min-1 X g-1 at 74/min (P less than 0.01) with a duty cycle of 0.25 and from 1.32 +/- 0.19 ml X min-1 X g-1 at an average of 15/min to 1.96 +/- 0.15 ml X min-1 X g-1 at 80/min (P less than 0.02) with a duty cycle of 0.75. At higher contraction frequencies diaphragmatic blood flow did not increase further at both duty cycles. In addition, diaphragmatic blood flow was higher with a duty cycle of 0.25 than 0.75 at all contraction frequencies. We conclude that frequency of contraction is a major determinant of diaphragmatic blood flow and that high duty cycle impedes diaphragmatic blood flow.  相似文献

Strips of isolated rat diaphragm muscle were attached to a servomotor-transducer apparatus, and the muscle length was cycled in a sinusoidal fashion about the length at which maximum isometric twitch force was developed, Lo. The amplitude of the length displacement (excursion amplitude) and rate of cycling were varied between 3 and 13% Lo and 1-4 Hz respectively. The muscle was tetanically stimulated (100 Hz, supramaximal voltage, stimulus duration (duty cycle) 20% of the length cycle period) during the shortening stage of the imposed length cycle at the phase that yielded maximum net positive work. The force and displacement of the muscle were recorded. Work per cycle was calculated from the area of the loop formed by plotting force against length for one full stretch-shorten cycle. Work per cycle decreased, but power increased, as cycle frequency was increased from 1 to 4 Hz. Maximum work done per cycle was about 12.8 J/kg at a cycle frequency of 1 Hz. Maximum mean power developed was about 27 W/kg and occurred at a cycle frequency of 4 Hz. Work and power were maximum at an excursion amplitude of 13% of Lo (i.e., Lo +/- 6.5%). Measured work and power output are considerably less than values estimated from length-tension and force-velocity curves.  相似文献

Responses of isolated rat iris dilator to some agents and to electrical stimulation were examined. Norepinephrine and epinephrine produced contraction, which was antagonized by 0.03 μM phentolamine. Acetylcholine produced relaxation at low concentrations (1 nM ? 1 μM) as great as 80 % of the resting tone while contraction at high concentrations (≥1 μM). Both responses were suppressed by 0.02 μM atropine and enhanced by 0.03 μM physostigmine. Electrical stimulation at low voltage or low frequency (up to 10 Hz) elicited relaxation while stimulation at high voltage or high frequency (30 Hz) produced contraction. Stimulation with intermediate strength elicited biphasic response. The contraction and relaxation induced by electrical stimulation were abolished by 3 μM phentolamine or by 0.05 μM atropine, respectively. Both phases were abolished by tetrodotoxin (0.3 μM). It is suggested that in the rat the cholinergic relaxation of the dilator may assist the cholinergic contraction of the sphincter (1). The pronounced cholinergic relaxation of nonvascular tissue is to be noted.  相似文献

Muscle fatigue may be a precursor to workplace musculoskeletal disorders, with the low back resulting in the most frequently injured body part. Work/rest ratios have an effect on fatigue due to the amount of rest allowance provided following muscle contraction. This study explored various work/rest ratios by electrically stimulating rat medial longissimus muscles. A 3 V stimulus with 0.2 ms pulse duration was applied at a frequency of 30 Hz. There were four stimulation groups consisting of the following duty cycles (DC) and cycle times (CT): DC25%:CT20s, DC25%:CT280s, DC75%:CT20s, and DC75%:CT180s. Muscle fatigue was measured as a decrease in M-wave amplitude and area, and an increase in M-wave duration. The results indicated that fatigue occurred immediately in each of the groups. The higher duty cycle and shorter cycle time group resulted in significantly greater fatigue than the lower duty cycle and longer cycle time group, as measured by increased M-wave amplitude and area. A longer M-wave duration was observed in the high duty cycle long cycle time group. This suggests that the combination of low duty cycle and long cycle times leads to less fatigue. In high duty cycle scenarios, short cycle times result in less fatigue.  相似文献

Electrical and mechanical changes in immobilized human muscle   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
After forearm fracture, the human thumb was unilaterally immobilized in eight subjects for 6 wk in a standard plaster cast. Changes of contraction properties were studied in the adductor pollicis muscle. The contralateral muscle remained unrestrained and served as control. After immobilization, the maximal voluntary contraction was reduced by 55% (P less than 0.05), and the electrically evoked maximal tetanic contraction (Po) was reduced by 33% (P less than 0.05). The decrease of Po was associated with increased maximal rate of tension development (10%) and decreased maximal rate of tension relaxation (22%). The twitch times to peak and to half relaxation were increased by 16 and 14%, respectively, but the twitch tension (Pt) was not significantly changed and the Pt/Po ratio was increased by 43% after immobilization. The muscle surface action potential presented an increase of its duration (19%) and a decrease of the amplitude and the total area (15 and 26%, respectively). The comparison of the electrical and mechanical alterations recorded during voluntary contractions, and in contractions evoked by electrical stimulation of the motor nerve, suggests that immobilization not only modifies the peripheral processes associated with contraction but also changes central and/or neural command of the contraction. At peripheral sites, it is proposed that the intracellular processes of contraction play the major role in the contractile impairment recorded during immobilization.  相似文献

The force enhancement of a twitch after a maximal conditioning muscle contraction [i.e., postactivation potentiation (PAP)] is reduced with aging, but its influence on the summation of force in response to repetitive stimulation at different frequencies is not known. The purpose of this work was to compare the electrically evoked mechanical responses of the tibialis anterior muscle between young and elderly adults after a 6-s maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The results showed that, immediately after the conditioning MVC, twitch torque and its maximal rate of development and relaxation were significantly enhanced in both groups, but the magnitude of potentiation was greater in young (148.0 +/- 14.2, 123.7 +/- 16.5, and 185.4 +/- 36.5%, respectively) compared with elderly adults (87.4 +/- 15.2, 63.8 +/- 9.9, and 62.9 +/- 11.0%, respectively). This age-related difference in potentiation of the twitch disappeared completely 1 min after the conditioning MVC. The potentiation of torque and speed-related parameters in response to two- and three-pulse trains, delivered at a constant interval of 10 ms (100 Hz), was less than for a single pulse for both groups. In young adults, the magnitude of PAP on the successive individual mechanical contributions within a train of stimuli declined progressively such that the third contribution did not differ significantly from the same contribution before the conditioning MVC. In contrast, the second and third contributions did not potentiate (P > 0.05) in elderly adults. Although these contributions did potentiate significantly at a lower frequency of stimulation (20 Hz) in the two groups, the difference in PAP between young and elderly adults still persisted. This overall attenuation of potentiation with aging, however, appears to have a moderate influence on the decrement of the muscular performance.  相似文献

This work compares the specific effects of 3 mo of moderate, isometric, or dynamic voluntary exercises on the contractile properties of human adductor pollicis muscle. Isometric training consisted of 10 daily contractions of 5-s duration at the frequency of one contraction per minute. Dynamic training consisted of 10 daily series of 10 fast contractions (less than 0.5-s duration) moving a load of one-third of the maximal muscle strength at a frequency of one series per minute. Both training programs produced a concomitant increase in maximal tetanic tension and in peak rate of tension development (Ro). A larger increase (P less than 0.05) was found after isometric training (20 vs. 11% after dynamic exercises), whereas Ro augmented more (P less than 0.05) after dynamic contractions (31 vs. 18% after isometric training). Enhancements of twitch force (Pt), rates of twitch tension development (Rt), and of relaxation (St) were, respectively, 20, 20, and 12% after isometric training. There was no modification of contraction time and time of half relaxation (T 1/2R). Conversely, dynamic training produced increases of Rt (25%) and St (16%), associated with an apparently paradoxical decrease of Pt (10%) and reductions of contraction time (11%) and T 1/2R (9%). Maximal shortening velocity was only increased after dynamic training (21%), whereas the maximal muscle power presented a large increase (P less than 0.05) after isometric exercises (51 vs. 19% after dynamic exercises) and a shift of its optimal peak toward heavier loads. This study suggests that human muscle adapts differently to isometric or to dynamic training programs and provides evidence that its contractile kinetics can be altered by exercises performed in physiological conditions.  相似文献

The effects of sustained and rhythmically performed isometric contractions on electrically evoked twitch and tetanic force generation of the triceps surae have been investigated in 4 healthy male subjects. The isometric contractions were performed separately and on different occasions at 30%, 60% and 100% of the force of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The area under the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force/time curve during the rhythmic and sustained contractions was the same for each experiment. The results showed that following rhythmic isometric exercise there was a small decrease in low (10 and 20 Hz) and high (40 Hz) frequency tetanic tension which was associated with % MVC. However, there was no change in the 20/40 ratio of tetanic forces, MVC or the contraction times and force of the maximal twitch. In contrast, following sustained isometric exercise tetanic forces were markedly reduced, particularly at low frequencies of stimulation. The 20/40 ratio decreased and the induced muscle weakness was greater at 30% than 60% or 100% MVC. The performance of sustained isometric contractions also effected a decrease in contraction time of the twitch and MVC. The results are in accord with previous findings for dynamic work (Davies and White 1982), and show that if isometric exercise is performed rhythmically the effect on tetanic tensions is small and there is no evidence of a preferential loss of electrically evoked force at either high or low frequencies of stimulation following the contractions. For sustained contractions, however, the opposite is true, the ratio of 20/40 Hz forces is markedly reduced and following 30% sustained MVC there is a significant (p less than 0.05) change in the time to peak tension (TPT) of the maximal twitch.  相似文献

The effect of stimulation frequency on twitch force potentiation was examined in the adductor pollicis muscle of ten normal subjects. The ulnar nerve was supramaximally stimulated at the wrist and isometric twitch force was measured from a 3-Hz train lasting 1 s. Test stimulation frequencies of 5, 10, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 100 Hz were applied for 5 s each in random order (5 min apart) and the twitches (3 Hz) were applied immediately before and after (1 s) the test frequency and at intervals up to 5 min afterwards (10 s, and 1, 2 and 5 min). Poststimulation twitches were expressed as a percentage of the prestimulation twitch. Low frequency fatigue was not induced by the protocol since the 20:50 Hz ratio did not alter within each session. The degree of twitch potentiation was frequency dependent, with potentiation increasing up to 50 Hz [mean 173 (SD 16)%] but the effect was markedly less at 100 Hz [mean 133 (SD 25)%, P less than 0.01] for all subjects. The reduced potentiation at 100 Hz may have occurred due to high frequency fatigue produced by the 100-Hz test stimulation train. The optimal frequency of those examined in the experimental group was 50 Hz but this only produced maximal potentiation in six of the ten subjects and 100 Hz always produced less potentiation. These findings have implications for electrical stimulation of muscle in the clinical setting.  相似文献

The 24 h recovery pattern of contractile properties of the triceps surae muscle, following a period of muscle fatigue, was compared in physically active young (25 years, n = 10) and elderly (66 years, n = 7) men. The fatigue test protocol consisted of 10 min of intermittent submaximal 20 Hz tetani. The maximal twitch (Pt) and tetanic force at 3 frequencies (10, 20 and 50 Hz) were determined at baseline and at 15 min, 1, 4 and 24 h after fatiguing the muscle. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) and vertical jump (MVJ) were also assessed. The loss of force during the fatigue test was not significantly different between the young (18 +/- 13%) and elderly (22 +/- 15%). Both groups showed similar and significant reductions of Pt (15%), tetanic force (10 to 35%) and rate of force development (dp/dt) (20%) 15 min and 1 h into recovery. The loss of force was greater at the lower stimulation frequencies of 10 and 20 Hz. Time-to-peak tension was unchanged from baseline during recovery in either group. The average rate of relaxation of twitch force (-dPt/dt) was decreased (p less than 0.05) and half-relaxation time significantly increased at 15 min and 1 h in the elderly but not the young. The findings indicate that after fatiguing contractions, elderly muscle demonstrates a slower return to resting levels of the rate and time course of twitch relaxation compared to the young.  相似文献

We examined the effect of an age-related leftward shift in the force-frequency relationship on the comparative quadriceps fatigability of nine young (27 +/- 1 yr old) and nine old men (78 +/- 1 yr old) during low-frequency electrical stimulation. Two different protocols of intermittent trains (6 pulses on, 650 ms off) of electrical stimulation at 25% maximum voluntary contraction were performed by both groups: 1) 180 trains at 14.3 Hz [constant frequency (CF) protocol], and 2) 180 trains at the frequency corresponding to 60% of each subject's force-frequency curve [normalized frequency (NF) protocol; young 14.9 +/- 0.4 vs. old 12.7 +/- 0.5 Hz; P < 0.05]. The quadriceps of the old men were weaker (approximately 31%) and relaxation was slower compared with the young men, as assessed by the maximal relaxation rate constant of the 50-Hz tetanus (young 12.1 +/- 0.2 vs. old 9.2 +/- 0.5 s(-1); P < 0.05) and a leftward shift in the force-frequency relationship. The NF protocol revealed a decreased fatigability in the quadriceps with old age (percentage of 1st contraction force remaining at 180th: old 63.4 +/- 1.5 vs. young 58.2 +/- 1.7%; P < 0.05) that was masked during the CF protocol (old 60.7 +/- 1.6 vs. young 58.6 +/- 2.3%; P > 0.05). Irrespective of the protocol, the maximal relaxation rate was reduced to approximately 73 and approximately 57% of the prefatigue value in the young and old men, respectively. The age-related leftward shift in the force-frequency relationship of the quadriceps contributed to an underestimation of the fatigue resistance with old age during the CF protocol. However, when the stimulation frequency used in the NF protocol was adjusted to account for the age-related shift in the force-frequency relationship, the quadriceps muscles of the old men were less fatigable than those of the young men. Thus we suggest that whole muscle fatigability is better examined by electrical stimulation protocols that are adjusted for inter- and intragroup differences in the force-frequency relationship.  相似文献

Twitch potentiation was studied in the human triceps surae complex before and after intermittent maximal voluntary contractions or electrical stimulation at 20 Hz. Both forms of exercise were conducted with intact circulation for a maximum of 10 min or with circulatory occlusion until force output declined 50%. The relative potentiation was determined when a control twitch was compared to a twitch obtained after 5 s of maximal voluntary plantar flexion. The unpotentiated twitch torque (PT) and potentiated twitch torque (PT*) were reduced most severely after voluntary ischemic exercise (63.2% and 52.5% respectively, (P less than 0.001)). However, the relative potentiation (PT*/PT) immediately after voluntary ischemic exercise increased to 1.65 +/- 0.18 from 1.22 +/- 0.13 at rest. Both PT and PT* recovered quickly after exercise. At rest, twitch contraction time (CT) and one-half relaxation time (1/2 RT) in the unpotentiated twitch were longer than that of contraction (CT*) and one-half relaxation time (1/2 RT*) in the potentiated twitch. Following non-occluded exercise, CT, CT*, 1/2 RT and 1/2 RT* were shortened relative to rest. After ischemic exercise CT and CT* were shortened although 1/2 RT and 1/2 RT* increased relative to rest. Both CT* and 1/2 RT* quickly recovered to pre-exercise values by 5 min post-exercise. Ratios of potentiated/control twitch parameters were not altered after nonoccluded exercise, but were increased after ischemic exercise. These results suggest that the mechanisms of fatigue which depress voluntary torque and twitch and potentiated twitch torques, do not interfere with the extent of potentiation after fatiguing exercise.  相似文献

Ca2+ entry during the action potential stimulates muscle contraction. During repetitive low frequency stimulation, skeletal muscle undergoes staircase potentiation (SP), a progressive increase in the peak twitch force induced by each successive stimulus. Multiple mechanisms, including myosin regulatory light chain phosphorylation, likely contribute to SP, a temperature-dependent process. Here, we used the Ca2+-sensitive fluorescence indicators acetoxymethyl (AM)-furaptra and AM-fura-2 to examine the intracellular Ca2+ transient (ICT) and the baseline Ca2+ level at the onset of each ICT during SP at 30 and 37°C in mouse lumbrical muscle. The stimulation protocol, 8 Hz for 8 s, resulted in a 27 ± 3% increase in twitch force at 37°C and a 7 ± 2% decrease in twitch force at 30°C (P < 0.05). Regardless of temperature, the peak rate of force production (+df/dt) was higher in all twitches relative to the first twitch (P < 0.05). Consistent with the differential effects of stimulation on twitch force at the two temperatures, raw ICT amplitude decreased during repetitive stimulation at 30°C (P < 0.05) but not at 37°C. Cytosolic Ca2+ accumulated during SP such that baseline Ca2+ at the onset of ICTs occurring late in the train was higher (P < 0.05) than that of those occurring early in the train. ICT duration increased progressively at both temperatures. This effect was not entirely proportional to the changes in twitch duration, as twitch duration characteristically decreased before increasing late in the protocol. This is the first study identifying a changing ICT as an important, and temperature-sensitive, modulator of muscle force during repetitive stimulation. Moreover, we extend previous observations by demonstrating that contraction-induced increases in baseline Ca2+ coincide with greater +df/dt but not necessarily with higher twitch force.  相似文献

Young women are less fatigable than young men for maximal and submaximal contractions, but the contribution of supraspinal fatigue to the sex difference is not known. This study used cortical stimulation to compare the magnitude of supraspinal fatigue during sustained isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) performed with the elbow flexor muscles of young men and women. Eight women (25.6 +/- 3.6 yr, mean +/- SD) and 9 men (25.4 +/- 3.8 yr) performed six sustained MVCs (22-s duration each, separated by 10 s). Before the fatiguing contractions, the men were stronger than the women (75.9 +/- 9.2 vs. 42.7 +/- 8.0 N.m; P < 0.05) in control MVCs. Voluntary activation measured with cortical stimulation before fatigue was similar for the men and women during the final control MVC (95.7 +/- 3.0 vs. 93.3 +/- 3.6%; P > 0.05) and at the start of the fatiguing task (P > 0.05). By the end of the six sustained fatiguing MVCs, the men exhibited greater absolute and relative reductions in torque (65 +/- 3% of initial MVC) than the women (52 +/- 9%; P < 0.05). The increments in torque (superimposed twitch) generated by motor cortex stimulation during each 22-s maximal effort increased with fatigue (P < 0.05). Superimposed twitches were similar for men and women throughout the fatiguing task (5.5 +/- 4.1 vs. 7.3 +/- 4.7%; P > 0.05), as well as in the last sustained contraction (7.8 +/- 5.9 vs. 10.5 +/- 5.5%) and in brief recovery MVCs. Voluntary activation determined using an estimated control twitch was similar for the men and women at the start of the sustained maximal contractions (91.4 +/- 7.4 vs. 90.4 +/- 6.8%, n = 13) and end of the sixth contraction (77.2 +/- 13.3% vs. 73.1 +/- 19.6%, n = 10). The increase in the area of the motor-evoked potential and duration of the silent period did not differ for men and women during the fatiguing task. However, estimated resting twitch amplitude and the peak rates of muscle relaxation showed greater relative reductions at the end of the fatiguing task for the men than the women. These results indicate that the sex difference in fatigue of the elbow flexor muscles is not explained by a difference in supraspinal fatigue in men and women but is largely due to a sex difference of mechanisms located within the elbow flexor muscles.  相似文献

The effects of 21 days voluntary leg (plaster) immobilization on the mechanical properties of the triceps surae have been studied in 11 young female subjects, mean age 19.4 years. The results show that during the period of immobilization the mean time to peak tension (TPT) and half relaxation time (1/2RT) and tension (Pt) of the maximal twitch increased significantly (p less than 0.001) but the effects were short lived. Maximal tension and contraction times of the twitch recovered within 2-14 days following the removal of the plaster cast. The electrically evoked tetanic tensions at 10 Hz and 20 Hz did not change significantly (P greater than 0.1) during immobilization, but the 50 Hz tetanic tension (Po50) and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) were reduced (p less than 0.05). The fall in Po50 and MVC was associated with 10% decrease in the estimated muscle (plus bone) cross-sectional area. The relative (%) change in Po50 and MVC following immobilization was related to the initial physiological status (as indicated by the response of the triceps surae to a standard fatigue test prior to immobilization) of the muscle. The rate of rise and recovery fall of the tetanus were slightly but significantly (p less than 0.01) reduced on day 7 of immobilization, but thereafter remained constant. The isokinetic properties of the triceps surae as reflected in the measured torque/velocity relation of the muscle in 4 subjects did not change significantly if account was taken of the slight degree of atrophy present following immobilization.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The tension-time index (TTI) has been used to estimate mechanical load, energy utilization, blood flow, and susceptibility to fatigue in contracting muscle. The TTI can be defined, for a rhythmically contracting muscle, as the product of average force development divided by maximum tetanic force times duty cycle [contraction time / (contraction + relaxation time)]. In this study, the TTI concept was applied to isolated diaphragm via a method that allowed TTI to be clamped at a predetermined value. The hypothesis tested was that, at constant TTI, muscle energetics and the extent of fatigue would vary with stimulation frequency. Isolated diaphragm strips were stimulated at 25, 50, 75, or 100 Hz for 4 min, one per second. Duty cycle was continuously adjusted to maintain TTI at 0.07, which was near the highest TTI tolerated for 4 min, at 20-Hz stimulation. At the end of the fatigue run, muscles were either immediately frozen for determination ATP, creatine, and creatine phosphate concentrations (n = 6) or stimulated for evaluation of low- and high-frequency fatigue (n = 5). Results demonstrated no difference in the extent of fatigue or in the final ATP and creatine phosphate concentrations between groups. Large within-run increases in duty cycle were required at low stimulation frequencies, but only small increases were required at the highest frequencies. The results demonstrate that, at a constant TTI, similar fatigue properties predominate at all stimulation frequencies with no clear distinction between high- and low-frequency fatigue. The method of clamping TTI during fatigue may be useful for evaluating energetics and contractile function between treatment groups in isolated muscle when treatment influences baseline contractile characteristics.  相似文献
