Distribution of the ABO blood groups and the HP,TF, GC,PI and C3 serum proteins in Yakuts

In Yakut populations examined, polymorphisms of immunological and serum protein markers, including AB0 and Rhesus blood groups, HP, TF, GC, PI and C3, were revealed. Gene frequencies for the systems studied fell into the following ranges: AB0 system: r, 0.514 to 0.663; p, 0.136 to 0.306; q, 0.110 to 0.337; haptoglobin HP*1: 0.214 to 0.431; transferrin TF*C: 0.700 to 1.0; group specific component GC*1: 0.821 to 0.978; PI*M1 proteinase inhibitor (or alpha 1-antitrypsin) PIM1: 0.860 to 0.946; and third component of the complement C3*F: 0.031 to 0.143.     

Helicobacter pylori and peptic ulcer disease.

Medical therapy for duodenal or gastric ulcer disease has traditionally involved gastric acid antisecretory therapy for 4 to 8 weeks to promote initial healing and indefinitely to prevent recurrences of ulcer. The discovery of Helicobacter pylori in most patients with peptic ulcer disease has led to a change in this approach. Therapy designed to eradicate H pylori may facilitate ulcer healing with acid antisecretory agents and, more important, may greatly reduce the incidence of ulcer recurrence, obviating the need for maintenance antisecretory therapy. Regimens designed to eradicate H pylori are difficult to comply with, however, and are associated with adverse effects in some patients. In this article we review the diagnosis and treatment of H pylori infection in patients with peptic ulcer disease and make recommendations regarding the use of conventional ulcer therapies and therapies designed to eradicate H pylori.     

Serum protein groups (Hp, GC, C3) in patients with gastric carcinoma.

The phenotypes and gene frequencies of 3 serum protein systems (Hp, GC and C3) were studied in 114 consecutive patients from all over Greece with gastric carcinoma. Healthy Greeks studied previously in our Department served as controls. No significant differences were found between patients and controls concerning Hp. Significant differences were found in the GC and C3 systems; GC 2-1 and C3F phenotype as well as C3*F gene frequencies were significantly higher in patients than in controls.
