Motor patterns of the cardiac sac, the gastric and the pyloric network in the stomatogastric nervous system of the shrimp Penaeus japonicus, the most primitive decapod species, were studied. Single neurons can switch from the gastric or the pyloric pattern to the cardiac sac pattern. Some of the pyloric neurons fire with the gastric pattern. All of the gastric neurons fire with the pyloric pattern, unlike those in reptantians. Proctolin activates and modulates the cardiac sac and the pyloric rhythm, and promotes reconfiguration of the networks. Neurons of the three networks have so many interconnections that they construct a multifunctional neural network like those in Cancer. This network may function in different configurations under the appropriate conditions. Several modes of interactions between the networks found in different reptantian species can apply to the penaeidean shrimp. Such interactions are general features of the stomatogastric nervous system in decapods. Phylogenetic differences among the decapod infraorders are seen in the number and orientation of muscles and the innervation pattern of muscles. The multifunctional networks have existed in the most primitive decapod species, and types of configurations of the networks would have evolved to produce a wide range of motor patterns as the foregut structure has become complex. 1.  The neurons of the pyloric network of the lobster (Panulirus interruptus) stomatogastric ganglion organize their rhythmic motor output using both chemical and electrical synapses. The 6 electrical synapses within this network help set the firing phases of the pyloric neurons during each rhythmic cycle. We examined the modulatory effects of the amines dopamine (DA), serotonin (5HT) and octopamine (Oct) on coupling at all the electrical synapses of the pyloric network.
2.  Electrical coupling within the pacemaker group [anterior burster (AB) to pyloric dilator (PD), and PD-
3.  Dopamine decreased or increased the coupling strength of all the pyloric electrical synapses: the sign of the effect depended upon which neuron was the target of current injection. For example, DA decreased AB PD coupling (i.e., when current was injected into the AB) but increased coupling in the other direction, PD AB. Dopamine decreased AB to VD coupling when current was injected into either neuron. Serotonin also had mixed effects; it enhanced PDAB coupling but decreased AB to VD and PD to VD coupling in both directions. Octopamine's only effect was to reduce PD VD coupling. li]4.
5.  The characteristic modulation of electrical coupling by each amine may contribute to the unique motor pattern that DA, 5HT and Oct each elicit from the pyloric motor network.

1. Transmitters of motoneurons in the stomatogastric ganglion (STG) of Squilla were identified by analyzing the excitatory neuromuscular properties of muscles in the posterior cardiac plate (pcp) and pyloric regions. 2. Bath and iontophoretic applications of glutamate produce depolarizations in these muscles. The pharmacological experiments and desensitization of the junctional receptors elucidate the glutamatergic nature of the excitatory junctional potentials (EJPs) evoked in the constrictor and dilator muscles. The reversal potentials for the excitatory junctional current (EJC) and for the glutamate-induced current are almost the same. 3. Some types of dilator muscle show sensitivity to both glutamate and acetylcholine (ACh) exogenously applied. The pharmacological evidence and desensitization of the junctional receptors indicate the glutamatergic nature of neuromuscular junctions in these dually sensitive muscles. The reversal potentials for the EJC and for the ACh-induced current are not identical. 4. Glutamate is a candidate as an excitatory neuro-transmitter at the neuromuscular junctions which the STG motoneurons named PCP, PY, PD, LA and VC make with the identified muscles. Kainic and quisqualic acids which act on glutamate receptors are potent excitants of these muscles. Extrajunctional receptors to ACh are present in two types of the muscle innervated by LA and VC. 5. Neurotransmitters used by the STG motoneurons of stomatopods are compared to those of decapods.  相似文献

Ontogeny of the gut in Penaeus setiferus was investigated by reconstruction of serial sections examined by light microscopy. Development of the gut into the adult form is protracted over several weeks beyond metamorphosis in steps that may be directly related to the unique postlarval life history of Penaeus. The gastric mill is lacking in larval stages of P. setiferus. In protozoeal stages Z1-Z3, the pyloric ampullae are blind sacs that do not communicate with the midgut. The gland filter first appears in mysis stage M2. The gastric mill in early postlarval (PL) stages consists of poorly chitinized lobes with flexible setae. By PL21 the ossicles of the gastric mill are rigid and setae are replaced by spine-like denticles, but even by PL35 the gastric mill is neither as massive nor heavily chitinized as in adults. During the mysis stages and early PL stages, the hepatopancreas communicates freely with both the foregut and the midgut trunk. By PL35 the hepatopancreatic ducts are essentially isolated from the remainder of the midgut by foregut ossicles. The midgut in Z1 consists of two pairs of simple caeca and the midgut trunk. During larval growth, each of the lateral midgut caeca develops into a number of lobes. After metamorphosis these lobes begin to ramify into small-diameter tubules, and by PL35 have completely ramified into the hepatopancreas of adults. From M1 to PL4, the anterior midgut caeca decrease in absolute size and become a single anterior diverticulum. The posterior midgut diverticulum first appears in PL21 as a simple sac and thereafter increases in size and complexity.  相似文献

This study reports a primer set for amplifying a partial fragment of about 610 bp in the fast mutating mitochondrial control region in shrimps of the genus Penaeus (Decapoda: Penaeidae). The utility of this amplified fragment for studying population differentiation and structuring, compared with more conservative mitochondrial genes (16S rRNA and COI), was explored in P. merguiensis populations over a vast geographical range based on sequence and RFLP analyses. The results indicate that the mitochondrial control region provides more informative sites and reveals more haplotypes, making it most useful for evaluating genetic variations within and between populations of Penaeus species.  相似文献

  • 1.1. Rostrum, carapace and abdominal regions of the exoskeletons of juvenile Penaeus californiensis (3–4 g) were analyzed for calcium, magnesium and phosphorus levels at 0. 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr postmolt.
  • 2.2. Calcium and magnesium reached relatively constant levels within 24 hr postmolt. Rostrum and carapace calcium values (maxium) were higher, 12–14% than those of the abdomen, 8%. Likewise, rostrum and carapace magnesium values (maxium) were higher, 0.9–1.2%. than those of the abdomen, 0.6%. There was no consistent pattern in changes in phosphorus with regard to body parts and time. Phosphorus values (maxium) varied from 0.5 to 1.2%.
  • 3.3. Dry weight of all body parts increased rapidly between 0 and 24 hr postmolt. Gradual increases from 24 to 96 hr suggested that there was continuous, but reduced, synthesis of matrix during that period.

Activity patterns of the constituent neurons of the posterior cardiac plate-pyloric system in the stomatogastric ganglion of the mantis shrimp Squilla oratoria were studied by recording spontaneous burst discharges intracellularly from neuronal somata. These neurons were identified electrophysiologically, and synaptic connections among them were qualitatively analysed. The posterior cardiac plate constrictor, pyloric constrictor, pyloric dilator and ventricular dilator motoneurons, and the pyloric interneuron were involved in the posterior cardiac plate-pyloric system. All the cell types could produce slow burst-forming potentials which led to repetitive spike discharges. These neurons generated sequentially patterned outputs. Most commonly, the posterior cardiac plate neuron activity was followed by the activity of pyloric constrictor neurons, and then by the activity of pyloric dilator/pyloric interneuron, and ventricular dilator neurons. The motoneurons and interneuron in the posterior cardiac plate-pyloric system were connected to each other either by electrical or by inhibitory chemical synapses, and thus constructed the neural circuit characterized by a wiring diagram which was structurally similar to the pyloric circuit of decapods. The circuitry in the stomatogastric ganglion was strongly conserved during evolution between stomatopods and decapods, despite significant changes in the peripheral structure of the foregut. There were more electrical synapses in stomatopods, and more reciprocal inhibitory synapses in decapods.Abbreviations EJP excitatory junctional potential - IPSP inhibitory postsynaptic potential - CoG commissural ganglion - CPG central pattern generator - ion inferior oesophageal nerve - OG oesophageal ganglion - pcp posterior cardiac plate - son superior oesophageal nerve - STG stomatogastric ganglion - stn stomatogastric nerve - PY pyloric constrictor - PD pyloric dilator - VD ventricular dilator - AB pyloric interneuron - lvn lateral ventricular nerves - tcpm transverse cardiac plate muscle  相似文献

Summary The anterior burster neuron of the lobster (Panulirus interruptus) stomatogastric ganglion is a conditional burster that functions as the primary pacemaker for the pyloric motor network. When modulatory inputs to this cell are blocked, it loses its bursting properties and becomes quiescent. Applications of the monoamines, dopamine, octopamine or serotonin restore rhythmic bursting in this cell (Flamm and Harris-Warrick 1986). At 15 °C, serotonin- and octopamine-induced oscillations depend critically upon sodium entry (blocked by low sodium saline or tetrodotoxin); dopamine-induced oscillations depend upon calcium entry (blocked by reduced extracellular calcium; Harris-Warrick and Flamm 1987). We show here that the ionic dependence of amine-induced oscillations in the anterior burster cell differs at 15 and 21 °C. At 21 °C, all amines have the potential to induce rhythmic oscillations in saline containing tetrodotoxin. At the elevated temperature and in tetrodotoxin, both calcium and sodium currents are essential for the maintenance of dopamine-induced oscillaions; serotonin-induced oscillations do not depend upon either calcium or sodium alone; octopamine-induced oscillations do not depend upon calcium and show a variable dependence upon sodium. Thus, multiple ionic mechanisms, which vary with both the modulator and the ambient temperature, can be recruited to support rhythmic activity in a conditional burster neuron.Abbreviations AB anterior burster - PD pyloric dilator - PY pyloric constrictor - DA dopamine - 5HT serotonin - Oct octopamine - STG stomatogastric ganglion - TTX tetrodotoxin - GSP graded synaptic potential  相似文献

Gravid females of Penaeus semisulcatus were spawned in the laboratory by natural means. The embryos were documented and the larvae were reared from hatching to postlarval stage at 28.2–30.0 °C and 33.5–34.5 g kg−1 salinity for about 10 days (223 h 55 min). Six naupliar stages, three protozoea stages, three mysis stages and the first postlarval stage were described and illustrated. The larvae were fed only with microalgae Tetraselmis tetrathele and Chaetoceros gracilis from first protozoea until the second mysis, with about 90% survival rate; from the third mysis until the first postlarva they were fed with similar microalgae coupled with rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia nauplii. The embryonic and larval stages of P. semisulcatus are generally similar to those of other closely related species in the family Penaeidae, such as Melicertus canaliculatus, Fenneropenaeus merguiensis, and Marsupenaeus japonicus, except for the size and structure of diagnostic characters, setation of appendages and duration of metamorphoses. The change in the feeding habit during ontogeny was related to morphological transformation of the feeding apparatus of larvae and postlarvae. This paper is the first comprehensive and complete account of the early developmental stages of P. semisulcatus.

The black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) is an ecologically and economically important penaeid species and is widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific region. Here we investigated the genetic diversity of P. monodon (n = 355) from eight geographical regions by genotyping at 10 microsatellite loci. The average observed heterozygosity at various loci ranged from 0.638 to 0.743, indicating a high level of genetic variability in this region. Significant departures from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium caused by heterozygote deficiency were recorded for most loci and populations. Pairwise F(ST) and R(ST) values revealed genetic differentiation among the populations. Evidence from the assignment test showed that the populations in the West Indian Ocean were unique, whereas other populations examined were partially admixed. In addition, the non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis indicated the presence of three geographic groups in the Indo-Pacific region, i.e. the African populations, a population from western Thailand and the remaining populations as a whole. We also sequenced and analysed the mitochondrial control region (mtCR) in these shrimp stocks to determine whether the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes show a similar pattern of genetic differentiation. A total of 262 haplotypes were identified, and nucleotide divergence among haplotypes ranged from 0.2% to 16.3%. Haplotype diversity was high in all populations, with a range from 0.969 to 1. Phylogenetic analysis using the mtCR data revealed that the West Indian Ocean populations were genetically differentiated from the West Pacific populations, consistent with the microsatellite data. These results should have implications for aquaculture management and conservation of aquatic diversity.  相似文献

The population structure of the only Litopenaeus species occurring in Brazilian waters, the white shrimp L. schmitti, was surveyed by screening six microsatellite loci. High diversity (HE = 0.863; average number of alleles per locus = 37.8) was found across eight geographical locations (2 degrees S to 27 degrees S). Estimates of overall FST(0.0060) were low but significantly different from zero (P < 0.05). FST pairwise estimates and amova revealed a significant discontinuity around a major biogeographical boundary, near Cabo Frio, at 23 degrees S. This separation may have been caused either by historical or on-going hydrogeographical and/or selective factors.  相似文献

The analysis of integumental pore pattern has identified two intraspecific groups of postlarval shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931), a species of which three to five natural populations or groups are expected to be found from Mexico to Peru. Natural distribution and man-made redistributions have not been typified on a population basis in any penaeid, but it is important to do so in this commercially significant group. Important factors to be defined on a geographic population or group basis include differences in domesticity (eg resistance to pathological agents); food conversion indexes and food preferences; growth indices; tolerance to stress of various origins and other attributes useful in aquaculture. This consideration is valid not only for L. vannamei but also for any other shrimp species that has been the object of artificial redistribution.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy was used to describe the structure of the spermatozoon and spermatophore of Farfantepenaeus subtilis. The spermatophore showed characteristics similar to those of members of the subgenus Farfantepenaeus. This included an extensive glandular epithelium and a lack of a wing. The sperm mass, which was distributed at the periphery of the spermatophore, was surrounded by a large amount of acellular material. The spermatozoon has a spherical main body and a well-defined acrosomal region with a single spike, which was bent in some cells. The immotile sperm cells have an average length of 7.1?±?0.6?μm. Information on sperm location within the spermatophore will assist in the efficient extraction of the sperm mass during dissection.  相似文献

We present a cladistic analysis of the Anomala based on 66 ingroup species and 5 outgroup representatives. Based on a comparative analysis of the morphology of the foregut we scored 124 characters related to size, shape, and fusion of foregut ossicles and other foregut structures. Our parsimony analysis resulted in 30 equally parsimonious trees which differ mainly at the lower hierarchical level. Our study reveals two large clades within Anomala. One large clade consists of Galatheoidea and Chirostyloidea. The internal relationships show a monophyletic Porcellanidae nested within a group comprising paraphyletic Galatheidae, and Munididae as well as Munidopsidae. The other large clade contains Aegla as sister group to a monophyletic group consisting of the Hippoidea and a clade formed by Lomis and the Paguroidea. Coenobitidae are nested within paraphyletic Diogenidae and Lithodidae are nested within paraphyletic Paguridae. The results are discussed in the context of other morphological and molecular analyses. Furthermore, some aspects of carcinization are touched upon; in particular, an anomalan stem species with a, at least to some extent, ventrally folded pleon is suggested.  相似文献

Penaeoidean shrimp pleonal muscle is a valuable economic resource worldwide, but little is known of its development during larval stages. The development of pleonal muscle in Penaeus (Litopenaeus) vannamei was studied by rhodamine-phalloidin staining and laser-scanning confocal microscopy. Dorsal pleonal muscle was first evident at the protozoea I stage while ventral pleonal muscle was present by the protozoea II stage. Identifiable ventral pleonal muscles were evident by the protozoea III stage and all ventral muscle types were present in the mysis I. The tail flex response began at the mysis stage and growth of existing pleonal muscles continued. The pleopods formed during the mysis stages, with coxal and basis muscles developed by mysis III. The pleopods became functional beginning with the first post-larval stage. We conclude that the pleonal muscle pattern of P. vannamei larvae is similar to that of adult Penaeus setiferus, and that homologous muscles are present. The major formation of dorsal pleonal muscles occurs during the protozoea II stage, while significant development of ventral pleonal muscles occurs during the protozoea III stage.  相似文献

Microsatellites were isolated from P. monodon genomic libraries by direct sequencing of recombinant clones without probe screening. Forty-nine out of 83 clones sequenced contained 99 microsatellite arrays of three or more repeats. When five or more and ten or more repeats were considered, 28 and 14 microsatellites were detected, respectively. The 99 microsatellites were classified as perfect (75%), imperfect (6%), compound perfect (3%) and compound imperfect (16%). The abundance of di-, tri-, tetra- and hexanucleotide repeats were 67%, 20%, 9% and 3%, respectively. The dinucleotide repeats included 36 (CT)n, 31 (GT)n, 17(AT)n and 3 (CG)n. One octanucleotide repeat (ATTTATTC)5 was found within a large repeat sequence. Optimal annealing temperatures were determined for PCR using 11 primer sets encompassing 15 microsatellites. Ten primer sets provided successful amplifications with allele sizes generally ranging from 139 to 410 bp. All these primers amplified polymorphic loci with PIC values ranging from 0.63 to 0.96. Two primer sets amplified additional bands which can easily be distinguished from the bands of the main locus. Three out of 10 P. monodon microsatellites also amplified alleles in P. vannamei. The abundance and informative nature of P. monodon microsatellites and their potential for cross-species amplification make them useful for genetic studies.  相似文献

Five polymorphic microsatellite loci were characterized for Penaeus (Litopenaeus) vannamei. Loci were isolated using a partial Sau3A1 genomic library by the sequencing of randomly selected clones and by a biotinylated (CT)10 and (GT)10 probes screening procedure. The last strategy resulted in the most useful data. About 40% of the clones showed a previously reported satellite/microsatellite (PVS1), reducing the chance of finding new microsatellite regions. Whereas two of the microsatellite loci with more than 10 alleles will be useful for mating analysis in a breeding program, the others might prove useful for population genetic studies.  相似文献
