Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, with Zeeman background correction and after improved matrix modification, was used to measure the plasma selenium content of healthy blood bank donors in the central part of Belgium.

The mean plasma selenium concentration of 80 men and 80 women was 79.7±4.4 ng/mL with a range of 55.0–117.4 ng/mL.

There was no gender difference observed. Plasma selenium level was significantly highest for the adult group, aged 45–64 years, compared to the others, except the young adults (18–24 years).

The mean plasma selenium concentration measured corresponded well with literature data for Belgium. The obtained values were found to be in the medium range, compared with recent literature values for the European countries.  相似文献

Blood serum selenium levels were measured in 576 healthy middle aged adults (40–60 yr, 255 men and 321 women) residing in both urban and rural areas in four districts of Slovakia. Serum selenium was determined by electrothermal AAS. The mean (±SD) serum selenium concentration was 0.852±0.335 μmol/L, ranging from 0.219–2.30 μmol/L. A large proportion of the individuals (19.62%) exhibited serum selenium levels under 0.57 μmol/L (45 μmol/L). There was no significant correlation between serum, selenium concentration and age, sex, and smoking status. There were significant differences between districts. The lowest mean (±SD) serum selenium was 0.664±0.269 μmol/L, the highest mean serum selenium (±SD) was 0.975±0.361 μmol/L. This differences could probably be attributed to the selenium, content in the soil of the different areas, which would contribute to the average daily selenium intake. In comparison with serum selenium levels in other European countries, the concentrations of selenium in the Slovak population are relatively low.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Selenium is one of the essential trace elements which is more notified in children in recent years. Reliable age-specific reference values for selenium in children in Iran are not clear and are important for the identification of selenium deficiency and some other researches that is the aim of this study. METHODS: Serum samples of 216 healthy children were analyzed by using hydride generation and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy to measured selenium level. RESULTS: The mean and standard deviation of serum selenium level in children 0-16 years old (mean: 39.83 months) was 72.14+/-16.80 microg/l. There was significant difference in serum selenium concentration between two sexes which was 76.78+/-15.24 microg/l and 69.56+/-17.09 microg/l in girls and boys respectively (P value=0.002). There was also a positive correlation between higher selenium serum concentration and age in both sexes. CONCLUSION: Essential trace element's normal ranges are fundamental data which could use in many studies. Serum selenium concentration in healthy Iranian children that found in this study is very close to serum concentration of European children. Our findings may reveal nutritional culture's similarity.  相似文献

Russia is the largest nation in the world and it has vastly different climatic and geochemical conditions. The human selenium status is determined mainly by the selenium intake from foods, whose concentration is subject to geochemical, geological and temporal factors. The data on the selenium status of populations in Russia are scarce and sporadic. This review presents the most recent selenium data acquired using adequate quality assurance measures. Serum samples were obtained from 2462 healthy blood donors between 1990-1996 from 125 locations representing 27 different regions of Russia. Samples of wheat flour and dried milk were also analyzed from most regions. The mean serum selenium concentration per region varied from 0.80 mumol/l in the western regions (Pskov) to 1.84 mumol/l in the easternmost regions (Sakhalin). A low (0.76-1.00 mumol/l) serum selenium concentration was found in only 6% of the locations. In 88% of the locations the mean serum selenium concentrations were moderate (1.01-1.40 mumol/l) and the highest values, > 1.45 mumol/l were found in eight towns. Wheat flour selenium concentrations varied widely from 44 to 557 micrograms/kg depending on the origin. The low values were either domestic or European and the high values of American or Australian origin. A high correlation between serum selenium and wheat flour (r = 0.79) suggests that the selenium status in most instances is determined by high selenium in wheat. Overtly very low or high serum selenium levels were not found in the 27 regions studied in Russia.  相似文献

The serum molybdenum (Mo) concentrations in 70 Japanese adults (35 males and 35 females) not receiving any medical care or treatment were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Serum Mo concentration in the subjects ranged from <0.1 to 9.11 ng/mL. More than half (55.7%) of the subjects showed values of less than 1 ng/mL and only 6 (8.6%) subjects showed more than 2 ng/mL. The mean+/-SD, geometrical mean (GM), range of GM+/-geometrical SD (GSD) and median value were 1.21+/-1.34, 0.81, 0.30 to 2.16, and 0.90 ng/mL, respectively. Among age, body mass index and several serum biochemical values, activities of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase showed significant associations with serum Mo; 15 subjects suspected of having liver dysfunction showed significantly higher serum Mo than others. We propose a range of 0.10-4.73 ng/mL, estimated as a range of GM+/-2GSD of serum Mo in the remaining 55 subjects without liver dysfunction, as a reference range of serum Mo in Japanese healthy adults.  相似文献

The European ferret, Mustela putorius furo, has become increasingly popular as an animal model in biomedical research. However, certain important normal clinical data have not been established for the ferret. In this study, serum thyroxine (T4) and 3,3',5-triiodothyronine (T3) values were obtained from ferrets by the use of commercial radioimmunoassays. Sera from 44 animals, 31 males (27 intact and 4 castrated) and 13 females (10 intact and 3 spayed) were assayed. Serum T4 values ranged from 1.01-8.29 micrograms/dl for males (mean = 3.24 +/- 1.65 micrograms/dl), and 0.71-3.43 micrograms/dl for females (mean = 1.87 +/- 0.79 micrograms/dl). Serum T4 values of adult female ferrets, juvenile ferrets (less than 1 year old) of either sex, and castrated males were similar to the normal T4 values of the cat, 1.20-3.80 micrograms/dl. Intact adult male ferrets had higher serum T4 values which were more comparable to those of the normal dog 1.52-3.60 micrograms/dl. Serum T3 values ranged from 0.45-0.78 ng/ml for males (mean = 0.58 +/- 0.09 ng/ml), and 0.29-0.73 ng/ml for females (mean = 0.53 +/- 0.13 ng/ml). These values are comparable to those of dogs and cats which are 0.50-1.50 ng/ml.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess whole blood selenium levels of 300 healthy adults living in four selected areas of the west of Algeria. Selenium was measured using differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry with a detection limit of 29.20 μg/L. The mean of whole blood selenium concentrations was 85.65 ± 21.60 μg/L ranging between 30.90 and 144.04 μg/L. This concentration did not vary significantly (P > 0.05) in relation to the gender of the subject, with concentrations of 87.75 ± 21.30 μg/L in men and 83.95 ± 21.60 μg/L in women group. Individuals older than 60 years had a whole blood selenium concentration significantly lower than the rest of the population. However, the measured selenium concentrations in the residential areas were not statistically different (P > 0.05). A total of 32 (10.70%) individuals exhibited whole blood selenium level below 60 μg/L. These results are similar to those of some European countries but are much lower than data observed in USA or seleniferous regions.  相似文献

Selenium has been reported to reduce the risk for heart diseases and cancer. We examined the association of sex, age, geographical location, serum cotinine concentrations, a measure of smoking intensity, and alcohol consumption with serum selenium concentrations in the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), 1988-1994. Study sample consisted of 14,619 apparently healthy individuals (male: 7,102; female: 7,517) aged 14 to >90 years. Sex, age, geographical location, serum cotinine concentrations, and alcohol consumption significantly influenced serum selenium concentrations (P < 0.05). The mean (+/- standard error) serum selenium concentration in men (124.5 +/- 0.20 ng/mL) was significantly higher than in women (122.0 +/- 0.20 ng/mL) (P < 0.0001). Men in the 31-50 y age group had the highest mean serum selenium concentration. In the same age group, women had the lowest mean serum selenium concentration. In both sexes, participants living in the Midwest and West had significantly higher serum selenium concentrations than those living in South and Northeast geographical locations. Serum cotinine was negatively associated with serum selenium concentrations in both men (beta = -0.0108; P < 0.0001 for trend) and women (beta = -0.0097; P < 0.0001 for trend). Alcohol consumption is positively associated with serum selenium in women (beta = 0.0462; P = 0.0044 for trend) but not in men (beta = 0.0015; P = 0.8496 for trend). Although, sex, age, geographical location, smoking, and alcohol intake influenced serum selenium concentrations, clinically low serum selenium concentrations are not common in the USA.  相似文献

A monitoring study of serum selenium concentration was carried out on healthy blood donors from different regions of Switzerland. With an overall mean serum concentration of 98 microg/L (n=1847), the selenium status of the healthy adults can be assessed as adequate. The lowest measured concentration of 62 microg/L denotes that the risk of a marginal selenium deficiency in the Swiss population is small. Compared to a similar study carried out in 1993, the status improved for both genders, although the increase is higher among women. It is noteworthy that the supplementation practice has increased during this period with ca. 2% of the population taking Se-micronutrients. No correlation between the age and the serum concentration is detected, even though the age-range was enlarged in this study to 18-68 years for the women and to 19-72 years for the men. The place of residence only marginally influences the selenium concentration, which implies a certain uniformity of the dietary habits between the various regions of the country.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to (1) estimate the concentration of selenium in the plasma of 146 residents (65 men and 81 women) and in the hair of 34 persons from the Gdańsk region in northern Poland, aged 19–70 and (2) compare the obtained results with data corresponding to healthy populations living in different European countries. Selenium in plasma was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry using the hydride generation method. The mean selenium concentration in plasma of the investigated persons was 73.3 ± 14.1 μg/L, 76.7 ± 13.2 μg/L in men, and 70.4 ± 14.7 μg/L in women. No age — dependent differences in plasma selenium were found in the investigated population. In 20% of the investigated persons, the selenium level in plasma was lower than 60 μg/L. The mean selenium concentration in hair was 0.30 ± 0.11 μg/g. A positive, statistically significant correlation between selenium concentrations in the plasma and hair of the investigated persons was found. The obtained results indicate that the selenium level in significant part of this population is suboptimal and should be elevated by supplementation with this element.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine if there is a relationship between serum selenium concentration in dogs and their health, and to assess the relationship between selenium concentration and morphological parameters of blood. Mean serum selenium concentration in dogs ranged from 0.169 to 0.273 mg/ml. Dogs diagnosed with malignant neoplasm had a significantly lower mean concentration of serum selenium compared to healthy dogs and those from the groups studied. The present study showed no statistically significant differences in Se serum content according to sex, age, and food type. Dogs diagnosed with malignant neoplasm had a significantly lower mean serum selenium concentration compared to healthy dogs and those from the other groups analysed, namely with hip dysplasia, allergy and fractures and with non-malignant tumour. Healthy dogs were characterized by the highest mean serum selenium concentration, significantly higher compared to dogs with non-malignant tumour, malignant neoplasm, allergy and fractures. Low levels of selenium contribute to the incidence of neoplasms and allergies and increase the risk of bone fractures in dogs. Additional laboratory tests should be conducted when certain diseases are diagnosed to determine Se concentration in dogs, thus making it possible to take preventive measures or therapeutic action.  相似文献

Recently, we found that prediagnostic serum selenium concentration was significantly lower for cases developing thyroid cancer (n = 43) than for controls. We assumed that redistribution of serum selenium into the affected tissue took place in the prediagnostic period. The present study was carried out to determine the physiological concentration of selenium in the thyroid, since very few data are available in the literature. The concentrations of selenium in the thyroid (n = 45) and liver samples from Norwegians who had died because of acute illness or accidents were determined by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. The mean selenium concentration was found to be 0.72 +/- 0.44 microgram/g in the thyroid and 0.45 +/- 0.11 microgram/g in the liver tissue. The surprisingly high concentration of selenium in apparently normal thyroids indicates that selenium has important functions in this organ. The remarkably broad range, together with the observation that no significant correlation exists between thyroid and liver concentrations, suggest that factors other than the selenium status are important determinants for the selenium concentration in the thyroid gland. This observation is consistent with our hypothesis that in carcinogenesis, prediagnostic processes influence the serum-/thyroid-ratio of selenium.  相似文献

Blood serum selenium levels were measured in 891 healthy children and adolescents (aged 11–18 yr, 450 girls and 441 boys) residing in both rural and urban areas from eight regions of Slovakia. Subjects were divided into four age groups (11–12 y, 13–14 y, 15–16 y, and 17–18 y). Serum selenium concentration was determined by the electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometric method. The mean (±SD) serum selenium concentrations were 0.750 ±0.255 μmol/L in girls and 0.773 ±0.235 μmol/L in boys. A large proportion of the individuals (25.7% in girls, 18.1% in boys) exhibited serum selenium levels under 0.57 μmol/L (45 μg/L). An increasing trend of the serum selenium values with age has been observed in both boys (p < 0.01) and girls (p < 0.05). Boys had higher serum selenium levels in the all age groups but the differences were not statistically significant.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Resistin, a peptide hormone, has been discussed controversially as a missing link between obesity and insulin resistance. In contrast to resistin mRNA expression in adipose tissue, data on human serum levels in obesity and diabetes mellitus is scarce. The physiological range of serum resistin levels, reference values or adjusted percentiles have not yet been determined, making the interpretation of serum resistin concentrations quite difficult. METHODS: Resistin serum concentrations were measured systematically by ELISA in 216 healthy controls, 555 patients with type 2 diabetes and 114 patients with type 1 diabetes. Mean values, median, and range were determined, and BMI-, gender-, and disease-adapted percentiles were calculated for all subgroups. RESULTS: Age and gender did not have any influence on resistin levels. BMI and resistin levels were positively correlated in healthy controls (p = 0.02), albeit with a weak correlation coefficient. This correlation was absent in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In both genders, healthy controls had significantly higher resistin levels than patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes (7.9 +/- 0.2 ng/ml vs. 5.7 +/- 0.2 ng/ml and 5.5 +/- 0.1 ng/ml, respectively; p < 0.0001). There was no correlation between resistin levels and occurrence of diabetic retinopathy or nephropathy. CONCLUSIONS: Serum resistin levels can be measured by ELISA over a broad range from 0.6 ng/ml up to 27.7 ng/ml, suggesting that percentiles might be helpful in the interpretation of an individuals resistin value. While age and gender do not influence resistin levels, BMI and occurrence of diabetes have to be considered.  相似文献

We investigated the serum concentration of endostatin in 84 patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and in 13 healthy controls. The level of measured anti-angiogenic agent was correlated with the phase and stage of the disease, and most importantly with clinical and laboratory parameters depicting the disease activity (haemoglobin, creatinine, albumins, calcium, M-component, C-reactive protein, beta2-microglobulin, lactate dehydrogenase, stage of bone disease) as well as serum levels of pro-angiogenic cytokines such as vascular endothelial growth factor, hepatocyte growth factor, fibroblast growth factor and transforming growth factor-beta. The median serum level of endostatin in MM patients was 58 ng/ml and was statistically significantly higher than in the control group (median, 40 ng/ml; p=0.015). MM patients in phase I (at diagnosis) had higher levels of endostatin (median, 69 ng/ml) than those in phase II (plateau phase after treatment) (median, 49 pg/ml; p=0.044). We did not find any statistical correlation between the level of endostatin and stage of MM according to the Durie and Salmon system. The serum concentration of endostatin in MM patients with a normal level of albumins was significantly higher than in others with hypoalbuminaemia (median, 62 ng/ml versus 39 ng/ml; p=0.033). Also, patients with a normal value of lactate dehydrogenase had a higher concentration of endostatin than those with values >425 U/l (median, 70 ng/ml versus 39 ng/ml; p=0.019). We did not show any statistical correlation between the concentration of endostatin and level of haemoglobin, creatinine, calcium, C-reactive protein, beta2-microglobulin and stage of bone disease. We failed to find positive or negative correlations between the level of endostatin and vascular endothelial growth factor, hepatocyte growth factor, fibroblast growth factor and transforming growth factor-beta. The concentration of endostatin did not influence the probability of survival in MM patients in our study. In conclusion, our data indicate that endostatin has a higher level in MM patients than in healthy controls. Highest values were stated in active phases of the disease (at presentation and in progression). Different clinical and laboratory parameters generally do not influence the concentration of endostatin (except albumins and lactate dehydrogenase).  相似文献

Commercially available uricase and peroxidase have been immobilized onto alkylamine glass and arylamine glass beads respectively. A discrete method has been developed to determine uric acid in serum using immobilized uricase and peroxidase. The method is based on generation of H2O2 from serum uric acid by immobilized uricase and its measurement by a colour reaction catalyzed by immobilized peroxidase. The minimum detection limit of the method was 8 microg/0.1 ml sample. The mean analytical recovery of added uric acid in serum was 87.5%. The within and between assay coefficient of variation (C.V.) were <6.58% and <10.77% respectively. The serum uric acid in apparently healthy adults and persons suffering from different disease was found to be 25-55 microg/ml, 32+/-2.25 (range, mean+/-S.D.) and 55-200 microg/ml; 52+/-6.4 (range, mean+/-S.D.) respectively by our method. A good correlation (r = 0.8170) was obtained between the serum urate values by this method and with those obtained by commercial Enzo-kit method.  相似文献

Astract  The mycotoxin ochratoxin A (OTA) is a public health issue in many countries. Data on OTA concentrations in foods and in blood are available for several European countries including the Balkan area, as well as for Canada and Japan. Yet, for developing countries such data are scarce. In this study we determined OTA blood levels as biomarker of exposure in bladder cancer patients and in healthy controls from Pakistan. OTA in blood was analyzed after extraction by HPLC with fluorescence detection (limit of detection: <0.03 ng/mL) in 96 patients and in 31 controls. Over 92% of all blood samples (87 patients, 30 controls) contained quantifiable amounts of OTA: The mean OTA concentrations were 0.33 ng/mL (SD 0.42; range: 0.03 to 3.41 ng/mL) in bladder cancer patients, and 0.31 ng/mL (SD 0.29; range: 0.04 to 1.25 ng/mL) in healthy controls. The estimation of the selenium status during pregnancy is of great importance because of the significance of selenium for fetus growth and antioxidant protection of neonates. This problem is especially urgent for Russia and its neighbors because very little data are available and because data on soil selenium predict low intake levels of selenium. A large epidemiological investigation made in various areas of the former USSR allowed us to obtain the first information concerning the subject. Serum samples were obtained during 1990–1998 from 556 female blood donors aged 20–53 yr and 722 pregnant women (18–33 yr) during different times of gestation. The mean serum selenium concentration of nonpregnant women varied from 0.87 μmol/L (Slavutich, Ukraine) to 1.74 μmol/L (Ioshkar-Ola, Mary-El) and that of women at delivery from 0.66 μmol/L (Zaporozie, Ukraine) to 1.34 μmol/L (Sakhalin, Russia). Compilation of literature and present data on serum selenium showed the following relationships: nonpregnant women versus women at delivery, y=x -0.25, r=0.94; women at delivery versus umbilical serum, log y=log x -0.2, r=0.97. The two relationships were used to predict serum selenium values for pregnant women taking into account the progressive serum selenium decrease during advancing pregnancy. In almost half of the towns (i.e. 22–50%), pregnant women were considered to have relative selenium deficiency.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine whether elevated levels of circulating forms of the soluble adhesion molecules, Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (cICAM-1), Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (cVCAM-1) and E-Selectin (cE-Selectin) are observed in the sera of HIV-1 infected individuals as compared to healthy HIV seronegative adults and whether these elevated levels can be correlated with disease progression. Significantly elevated levels of cICAM-1—ranging from 184 to 1116 ng/ml with a mean of 617 ng/ml—and cVCAM-1—ranging from 653 to 3456 ng/ml with a mean of 1500 ng/ml—were observed in the sera of 29 HIV-1 infected individuals as compared to controls-ranging from 152 to 354 ng/ml with a mean of 248 ng/ml for cICAM-1 and from 328 to 792 ng/ml with a mean of 560 ng/ml for cVCAM-1 (P < 0.001). The serum concentrations of cE-Selectin of the HIV-1 infected individuals did not differ from those of the healthy controls. The elevated levels of cICAM-1, cVCAM-1 did not correlate with the CD4 count or the serum concentration of C-reactive protein. However, a significant correlation was observed between the serum concentrations of cVCAM-1 and those of neopterin. Since cICAM-1 as well as cV-CAM-1 can interfere with adhesion events leading to immunological functions, it can be suggested that the high amounts of these circulating forms of adhesion molecules, when present in the sera of HIV-1 positive individuals, can further disturb the immune system of these patients. In addition, the present study also suggests that the seric concentrations of cVCAM-1 can be used as pronostic indicators.  相似文献

Bone disease related to vitamin D deficiency is an insidious problem in captive colonies of callitrichids. Currently a diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency may be made after the appearance of clinical pathology, usually bone deformities or fractures. The development of assays for vitamin D metabolites suggests it may be possible to detect incipient vitamin D deficiency before animals are adversely affected. However, there are few data on normative levels of these metabolites in any nonhuman primates. We collected blood samples from 18 wild cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus oedipus) from Colombia and assayed them for 25-hydroxy vitamin D(25-OH-D), the major circulating form of the vitamin, which is believed to be a good indicator of status. Serum concentrations of 25-OH-D averaged 76.4 ng/ml (range 25.5–120 ng/ml). This is high compared with human norms (10–55 ng/ml), but the range is lower than that reported in the literature for captive callitrichids. Juveniles had higher serum concentrations than did adults, and pregnant females had lower concentrations than did nonpregnant females. These data confirm that healthy callitrichids have higher circulating levels of 25-OH-D than do humans, but they suggest that the extremely high levels found in some captive animals (300–600 ng/ml) may be above normal. We propose that serum concentrations of 25-OH-D of 50–120 ng/ml can be considered normal for cotton-top tamarins and perhaps other callitrichids. If serum values much below 50 ng/ml are found during clinical evaluation, the possibility of incipient vitamin D deficiency should be considered.
