The flavonoid content in leaves of Zostera marina and the endangered Zostera noltii, including mono- and disulphated flavonoids, from different sample localities were characterized. Seasonal variation of both individual and total flavonoid, as well as rosmarinic acid concentration were revealed. Minor amounts of luteolin 7-(6″-malonyl)glucoside (6) and apigenin7-(6″-malonyl)glucoside (11) were identified in Z. noltii for the first time. The total flavonoid content was found to be higher in Z. noltii than in Z. marina at most of the examined localities, and the qualitative flavonoid content was somewhat different in the two species. The quantitative variation of flavonoids and rosmarinic acid was found to be relatively consistent from year to year in Z. marina during a period of three years. The two species appeared though to have a different flavonoid production in the various seasons at the West coast. While Z. marina had the highest content in young leaves in May or June, with a markedly decrease from June to September and the lowest measured content in February, Z. noltii had the lowest measured flavonoid content in May/June followed by an increase from June to September and the highest measured content during wintertime in February. The observed seasonal differences may be related to the fact that Z. noltii is considered a perennial, thermophilous species, and the increasing flavonoid production during the colder seasons from September to March/April in Norway may serve as a protective function. 相似文献

The uptake of 14C-labeled organic compounds by Zostera marina L. (eelgrass) and its epiphytes was examined in an eelgrass community near Beaufort, North Carolina. Assimilation and respiration by new leaf growth (few epiphytes), heavily colonized Zostera, and an epiphytized artificial substratum were determined. Glutamic acid was removed from the medium most rapidly, followed by acetate, glucose, and glycine, which were removed at approximately equal rates. The compound with the highest assimilation efficiency was glucose (90.4%), but all compounds were incorporated with efficiencies of > 75%. Incorporation by epiphytes on the artificial substratum was greater than uptake by epiphytes on eelgrass. The leaves of Zostera also accumulated radioactive material, but at low rates, and when combined with uptake by the epiphytic community, resulted in average turnover times for the tested compounds of < 7 h. Artificial epiphyte communities had similar turnover times. Kinetic analysis showed no saturation effect, with uptake being linear for the concentrations of substrata tested. We hypothesize that heterotrophic epiphytes are potentially a significant source of new particulate matter in estuarine food webs, and that the microbial communities play a significant role in seagrass carbon cycles. 相似文献

Synopsis The fish assemblage in nineteen shallow water (0–3 m) areas on the Swedish west coast, including an estuarine zone, was assessed during spring and autumn 1989 and autumn 1990, using semi-quantitative survey nets. Samples of macrovegetation were collected concurrently for estimates of species composition and biomass. Nine stations had rocky-bottom substrata and ten had soft-bottom substrata all characterized by high coverage of macrovegetation and variously overgrown with epiphytic filamentous algae. Fish assemblage structures were compared and related to vegetation biomass, substrata and estuarine influences. At rocky-bottom stations total fish biomass was positively correlated with total vegetation biomass and negatively correlated with the proportion of filamentous algae during autumn samplings. In soft-bottom habitats variation in vegetation was small between stations, and no correlation existed between vegetation biomass and fish biomass. However, the number of fish species in soft-bottom habitats decreased significantly with increasing dominance of filamentous algae. The component species of the fish assemblage varied in their relation to the vegetation biomass and structure suggesting differences in degree of association with vegetation at the species level. Multivariate analysis based on fish species composition and on vegetation assemblages at the individual stations, yielded two major groups in accordance with division of the substrate into rocky- and soft-bottom habitats. Vegetation biomass superimposed on the fish assemblage ordination indicated a relationship between vegetation biomass and fish assemblage structure. Location of stations, in relation to the estuary was reflected in subgroups formed in the fish assemblage based cluster and ordination, suggesting a substantial estuarine influence on the fish assemblages. Thus, substrate type, vegetation biomass and structure, and estuarine influence are all potential structuring factors for the fish assemblages. In our study, vegetation structure seems to be of major importance and changes such as increased dominance of filamentous algae, like that observed in coastal areas in Sweden, might cause significant changes in fish assemblage structure. 相似文献

Ecophysiological stress and physical disturbance are capable of structuring meadows through a combination of direct biomass removal and recruitment limitation; however, predicting these effects at landscape scales has rarely been successful. To model environmental influence on sexual recruitment in perennial Zostera marina, we selected a sub-tidal, light-replete study site with seasonal extremes in temperature and wave energy. During an 8-year observation period, areal coverage increased from 4.8 to 42.7%. Gains were stepwise in pattern, attributable to annual recruitment of patches followed by centrifugal growth and coalescence. Recruitment varied from 13 to 4,894 patches per year. Using a multiple linear regression approach, we examined the association between patch appearance and relative wave energy, atmospheric condition and water temperature. Two models were developed, one appropriate for the dispersal of naked seeds, and another for rafted flowers. Results indicated that both modes of sexual recruitment varied as functions of wind, temperature, rainfall and wave energy, with a regime shift in wind-wave energy corresponding to periods of rapid colonization within our site. Temporal correlations between sexual recruitment and time-lagged climatic summaries highlighted floral induction, seed bank and small patch development as periods of vulnerability. Given global losses in seagrass coverage, regions of recovery and re-colonization will become increasingly important. Lacking landscape-scale process models for seagrass recruitment, temporally explicit statistical approaches presented here could be used to forecast colonization trajectories and to provide managers with real-time estimates of future meadow performance; i.e., when to expect a good year in terms of seagrass expansion. To facilitate use as forecasting tools, we did not use statistical composites or normalized variables as our predictors. This study, therefore, represents a first step toward linking remotely acquired environmental data to sexual recruitment, an important measure of seagrass performance that translates directly into landscape-scale coverage change. 相似文献

The variation in reproductive potential of annual eelgrass was examined along a continuous gradient on an extensive mudflat bordering on and sloping down from the shore (Eastern River) and in a habitat mosaic in a salt marsh (Petpeswick Inlet) in Nova Scotia. Spathe and flower production as well as plant density were compared among habitats. Of the four habitats investigated in Petpeswick Inlet, the largest numbers of spathes and flowers per spathe were produced by plants in ponds on raised flats of Spartina alterniflora Loisel. The highest number of seeds per unit area was produced by plants in depressions on these flats which drained with each low tide. Seed production of annual eelgrass in drained depressions (4 889 seeds per 625 cm2) was seven times that of perennial shoots in creeks and higher than any records in the literature for perennial eelgrass. On average, seed production of annual eelgrass in this study was higher than values reported for other locations. Along the gradient, both annual and perennial eelgrass showed peaks in reproductive potential, but the annual peaked further up the gradient where there was greater exposure to air at low tide. Transplanting studies indicated that the among-habitat differences in reproductive potential were largely controlled by environmental as opposed to genetic factors. The possible effect of inter- and intraspecific competition on the reproductive potential of annual eelgrass was investigated experimentally in two habitats where co-existing species were abundant. In creeks the presence of perennial eelgrass significantly reduced the reproductive potential of annual eelgrass, but in a drained depression, the removal of Ruppia maritima L. s.l. had no effect. The upper distribution limit of annual eelgrass is likely determined by desiccation while the lower limit is probably determined by a combination of light availability (to some extent affected by perennial eelgrass) and exposure to spring rains which would significantly enhance seed germination. 相似文献

A comparative study of the adhesion of epiphytic bacteria and marine free-living, saprophytic, and pathogenic bacteria on seagrass leaves and abiotic surfaces was performed to prove the occurrence of true epiphytes of Zostera marina and to elucidate the bacterium-plant symbiotrophic relationships. It was shown that in the course of adhesion to the seagrass leaves of two taxonomically different bacteria, Cytophaga sp. KMM 3552 and Pseudoalteromonas citrea KMM 461, isolated from the seagrass surface, the number of viable cells increased 3-7-fold after 60 h of incubation, reaching 1.0-2.0 x 10(5) cells/cm2; however, in the case of adhesion of these bacteria to abiotic surfaces, such as glass or metal, virtually no viable cells were observed after 60 h of incubation. Such selectivity of cell adhesion was not observed in the case of three other bacterial species studied, viz., Vibrio alginolyticus KMM 3551, Bacillus subtilis KMM 430, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa KMM 433. The amount of viable cells of V. alginolyticus KMM 3551 adsorbed on glass and metal surfaces increased twofold after 40 h of incubation. The cells of saprophytic B. subtilis KMM 430 and pathogenic P. aeruginosa KMM 433 adsorbed on three studied substrata remained viable for 36 h and died by the 60th hour of incubation. 相似文献

The effects of light-limitation stress were investigated in natural stands of the seagrasses Zostera marina and Cymodocea nodosa in Ria Formosa coastal lagoon, southern Portugal. Three levels of light attenuation were imposed for 3 weeks in two adjacent meadows (2–3 m depth), each dominated by one species. The response of photosynthesis to light was determined with oxygen electrodes. Chlorophylls and carotenoids were determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Soluble protein, carbohydrates, malondialdehyde and phenol contents were also analysed. Both species showed evident signs of photoacclimation. Their maximum photosynthetic rates were significantly reduced with shading. Ratios between specific light harvesting carotenoids and the epoxidation state of xanthophyll cycle carotenoids revealed significantly higher light harvesting efficiency of C. nodosa, a competitive advantage in a low light environment. The contents of both soluble sugars and starch were considerably lower in Z. marina plants, particularly in the rhizomes, decreasing even further with shading. The different carbohydrate energy storage strategies found between the two species clearly favour C. nodosa''s resilience to light deprivation, a condition enhanced by its intrinsic arrangement of the pigment pool. On the other hand, Z. marina revealed a lower tolerance to light reduction, mostly due to a less plastic arrangement of the pigment pool and lower carbohydrate storage. Our findings indicate that Z. marina is close to a light-mediated ecophysiological threshold in Ria Formosa. 相似文献

The kinetics of mercury binding by pectin isolated from the seagrass Zostera marina was described, and its maximum mercury binding activity at pH from 2.0 up to 6.0 was determined. It was shown that mercury binding by pectin in in vitro conditions did not depend on concentration of hydrogen ions in the environment. The maximum mercury binding activity estimated from the Langmuir equation was 2.64 mmol/g of dry mass of the pectin. 相似文献

Ecological studies often assume that genetically similar individuals will be more similar in phenotypic traits, such that genetic diversity can serve as a proxy for trait diversity. Here, we explicitly test the relationship between genetic relatedness and trait distance using 40 eelgrass (Zostera marina) genotypes from five sites within Bodega Harbor, CA. We measured traits related to nutrient uptake, morphology, biomass and growth, photosynthesis, and chemical deterrents for all genotypes. We used these trait measurements to calculate a multivariate pairwise trait distance for all possible genotype combinations. We then estimated pairwise relatedness from 11 microsatellite markers. We found significant trait variation among genotypes for nearly every measured trait; however, there was no evidence of a significant correlation between pairwise genetic relatedness and multivariate trait distance among individuals. However, at the subpopulation level (sites within a harbor), genetic (FST) and trait differentiation were positively correlated. Our work suggests that pairwise relatedness estimated from neutral marker loci is a poor proxy for trait differentiation between individual genotypes. It remains to be seen whether genomewide measures of genetic differentiation or easily measured “master” traits (like body size) might provide good predictions of overall trait differentiation. 相似文献

In experiments on male white mice we initiated the induction of peroxidation of lipids by lead acetate, tetrachloromethane, sodium nitrite, or SOVOL (a mixture of polychlorinated biphenyls). Then the animals received intragastral injections of pectin isolated from the seagrass Zostera marina, in the form of a 1% gel, at 100 mg/kg for 2 weeks. It has been found that the low etherified pectin normalizes the level of malonic dialdehyde and the activity of glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase in the liver. 相似文献

This paper presents a new method for the recovery of marked seagrass blades. The introduction of a plastic belt surrounding the marked shoot at a sediment level provided a relocation arrangement which was unloosed by drag forces or grazing. The relocation method was tested on Zostera marina L. It proved to have the advantage of increasing dramatically the number of marked shoots recovered up to 100% while reducing the cost of the procedure to a minimum. An allometric model indicated that the introduced relocation method has no impact on the development of the plant. 相似文献

Low esterified pectin was isolated from the seagrass Zostera marina. Dynamics of the isolation process for the pectin from this seagrass was investigated. Two pectin derivatives: galacturonide (A) with molecular weight 30.55 kDa and galacturonide (B) with molecular weight 3.94 kDa were obtained using acidic hydrolysis of the native pectin from Zostera marina. Molecular weight parameters (Mw, Mn, Mw/Mn) of this pectin and its derivatives as well as of commercial apple pectin were determined using gel-filtration chromatography method. Comparative assessment of Cd2+, Pb2+, Y3+-binding activity of the native Zostera pectin, galacturonides A and B, and commercial apple pectin was performed. The results showed that galacturonide A with molecular weight 30.55 kDa possesses highest metal-binding capacity and may be considered as a candidate for development of medicines with metal-binding activity. 相似文献

The transport and establishment of non-indigenous species in coastal marine environments are increasing worldwide, yet few
studies have experimentally addressed the interactions between potentially dominant non-native species and native organisms.
We studied the effects of the introduced mussel Musculista senhousia on leaf and rhizome growth and shoot density of eelgrass Zostera marina in San Diego Bay, California. We added M. senhousia over a natural range in biomass (0–1200 g dry mass/m2) to eelgrass in transplanted and established beds. The effects of the non-indigenous mussel varied from facilitation to interference
depending on time, the abundance of M. senhousia, and the response variable considered. Consistent results were that mussel additions linearly inhibited eelgrass rhizome
elongation rates. With 800 g dry mass/m2 of M. senhousia, eelgrass rhizomes grew 40% less than controls in two eelgrass transplantations and in one established eelgrass bed. These
results indicate that M. senhousia, could both impair the success of transplantations of eelgrass, which spread vegetatively by rhizomes, and the spread of
established Z. marina beds to areas inhabited by M. senhousia. Although effects on leaf growth were not always significant, in August in both eelgrass transplantations and established
meadows leaf growth was fertilized by mussels, and showed a saturation-type relationship to sediment ammonium concentrations.
Ammonium concentrations and sediment organic content were linear functions of mussel biomass. We found only small, non-consistent
effects of M. senhousia on shoot density of eelgrass over 6-month periods. In established eelgrass beds, but not in transplanted eelgrass patches
(≈0.8 m in diameter), added mussels suffered large declines. Hence, eelgrass is likely to be affected by M. senhousia primarily where Z. marina beds are patchy and sparse. Our study has management and conservation implications for eelgrass because many beds are already
seriously degraded and limited in southern California where the mussel is very abundant.

Root structure of the seagrass Zostera capensis Setchell was investigated by light and electron microscopy. Roots possess conspicuous root hairs which greatly increase the surface area available for absorption. Exodermal cells abutting root-hair bases possess transfer cell characteristics. The strategic location of these cells suggests that they participate in absorptive and/or transfer processes between the epidermis and cortex. Vascular parenchyma cells within the stele also possess transfer cell features. Wall ingrowths of these cells about xylem elements, sieve tubes, companion cells and other vascular parenchyma cells, suggesting that they play a role in absorptive and/or transfer processes between the stele and cortex. Apoplastic barriers in the form of suberin lamellae and Casparian bands occur in walls of both the exodermis and endodermis. However, plasmodesmata perforate the suberin lamellae in these walls, and a symplastic pathway can be traced from the root hairs to vascular parenchyma transfer cells contiguous with conducting elements of the stele. The occurrence of wall ingrowths adjacent to xylem elements implies that transfer processes occur between vascular transfer cells and xylem. Although reduced, xylem could therefore play a role in transport. Structural evidence obtained in this study supports the role of the roots in absorptive processes and shows pathways available for transport from the water column to the conducting tissues of the root. 相似文献

【背景】海草床是重要的"蓝碳"生态系统,对全球碳汇有重要贡献。海草床沉积物剖面的垂直梯度特征显著,表层呈现氧化态,富含活性有机质,而深层呈还原态,以惰性有机质为主。【目的】探究这种垂直特征如何影响微生物的丰度和群落分布。【方法】利用荧光定量PCR和16SrRNA基因高通量测序等手段,测定了山东荣成天鹅湖大叶藻海草床不同深度(5、10、15、20、25和30 cm)沉积物中细菌和古菌丰度、多样性和群落结构的变化。【结果】细菌和古菌16S rRNA基因拷贝数随深度的增加而降低,在沉积物5cm深处,细菌的16SrRNA基因拷贝数显著高于20cm和30cm层(ANOVA,P<0.05)。深度对细菌和古菌α多样性指数没有显著影响(P>0.05)。细菌中相对丰度最高的是变形菌门,其次是绿弯菌门,拟杆菌门,浮霉菌门等,其中δ-变形菌和浮霉菌的相对丰度随深度显著增加(P<0.05)。古菌群落中深古菌门比例最高,在25cm深处达到70%以上;其次是乌斯菌门、洛基古菌门、广古菌门和奇古菌门等。奇古菌门比例随深度增加而显著降低(P<0.05),其他古菌类群在不同深度间差异不显著(P&... 相似文献

The effects of pectin from the eelgrass Zostera marina on toxic liver injury induced by enteral administration of lead acetate are examined in experiments on rats. Zostera marina is the dominant seagrass species in coastal lagoons on the western coast of Baja California Peninsula, and due to its coastal location it is threatened by natural and anthropogenic factors, as is happening in Puerto San Carlos, B.C.S., where a fish cannery unloads its wastewater to the beach. Apparently an extensive intertidal meadow replacement was established by great amounts of green macroalgae. We evaluated the possibility to mitigate the impacts of this cannery with transplants of Z. marina meadow using adult plants. The transplant experiment was made in two different seasons for which two undisturbed donor meadows were chosen: El Cuervo and San Carlitos. The winter one obtained a 30% and in San Carlitos 90% after 13 months and the autumn transplant in San Carlos obtained a 0% of survival after 3 months. The results of these transplant activities were reflected in the shoot density at the end of the experiment (San Carlos was of 482 shoots/m2 and San Carlitos of 818 shoots/m2s and agree with the density of the natural meadows. This experiment shows that it is possible to develop a small-scale seagrass restoration as mitigation for Baja California coastal lagoons which are under severe threat for coastal development. 相似文献
