Plants of Rumex thyrsiflorus Fingerh., R. crispus L. and R.maritimus L., which are zoned along a gradient of elevationin a river foreland ecosystem, and differ in their flood-tolerance,were subjected to different flooding levels. Under conditionsof soil flooding, the growth rates of the flood-tolerant R.crispus and R. maritimus were as high as under drained conditions, but that of the flood-intolerant R. thyrsiflorus was halved.Upon submergence, the low elevation species R. maritimus showedrapid shoot elongation; when elongation resulted in a protrusionof leaves above the water surface, the plants survived. Alternatively, underwater photosynthesis also led to a 100% survival of submergedR. maritimus plants, provided that enough inorganic carbon wasmade available in the water. This could be attributed in partto the use of photosynthetically-derived oxygen for root respiration;in a hydroculture experiment, with 5.0 mM CO2 in the water inthe shoot environment, photosynthetically-derived oxygen contributedmore than 50% to root oxygen consumption at low oxygen concentrationsin the root environment. The intermediately elevated species R. crispus appeared to bemuch more tolerant towards conditions of prolonged total submergence:older plants survived eight weeks submergence in the dark. Thisresponse was explicable in terms of a dormancy-strategy, whichis characterized by a slow consumption of carbohydrates storedin the tap-root. The differential responses of R. maritimusand R. crispus to total submergence reveal the limitations offlood-tolerance and reflect the different life-histories ofthe species. Background and Aims

Plant species from various taxa ‘escape’ from low oxygen conditions associated with submergence by a suite of traits collectively called the low oxygen escape syndrome (LOES). The expression of these traits is associated with costs and benefits. Thus far, remarkably few studies have dealt with the expected benefits of the LOES.

Methods

Young plants were fully submerged at initial depths of 450 mm (deep) or 150–240 mm (shallow). Rumex palustris leaf tips emerged from the shallow flooding within a few days, whereas a slight lowering of shallow flooding was required to expose R. acetosa leaf tips to the atmosphere. Shoot biomass and petiole porosity were measured for all species, and treatments and data from the deep and shallow submergence treatments were compared with non-flooded controls.

Key Results

R. palustris is characterized by submergence-induced enhanced petiole elongation. R. acetosa lacked this growth response. Upon leaf tip emergence, R. palustris increased its biomass, whereas R. acetosa did not. Furthermore, petiole porosity in R. palustris was twice as high as in R. acetosa.

Conclusions

Leaf emergence restores gas exchange between roots and the atmosphere in R. palustris. This occurs to a much lesser extent in R. acetosa and is attributable to its lower petiole porosity and therefore limited internal gas transport. Leaf emergence resulting from fast petiole elongation appears to benefit biomass accumulation if these plants contain sufficient aerenchyma in petioles and roots to facilitate internal gas exchange.Key words: Submergence, emergence, enhanced shoot elongation, porosity, aerenchyma, Rumex, cost–benefit analysis, phenotypic plasticity  相似文献

Rumex thyrsiflorus, Rumex crispus andRumex maritimus show a differential flood-tolerance in the river ecosystem in the Netherlands.R. thyrsiflorus occurs at high-elevated habitats and is flood-intolerant, the other two species occur at lower-elevated habitats and are flood-tolerant. We compared their respiratory activity under aerobic and anaerobic conditions in the root environment and quantified the internal gas transport. The results indicate that aerial oxygen can be used for root respiration in both aerobically and anaerobically grown plants. The amount of oxygen used via internal aeration increased with decreasing oxygen concentration in the root environment. Aerobically grown plants ofR. maritimus andR. crispus already showed a high internal aeration, but there was a significant increase in internal oxygen transport in anaerobic plants, where new, aerenchymatous roots had formed. This indicates the functional significance of new root formation for respiration in these species upon hypoxia. After two weeks of anaerobiosis, more than 50% of the total respiration of the roots of young plants ofR. maritumus and 40% of roots of young plants ofR. crispus was due to internal aeration at low oxygen concentrations in the root environment. InR. maritimus both young and old plants performed in this way, inR. crispus only young plants, whileR. thyrsiflorus showed some internal aeration, but this was hardly detectable. These differences can be explained on the basis of a different morphology and concomitant diffusive resistance of both root and shoot system. In experiments with different submergence levels of the shoot, the amount of internal aeration was positively correlated to the total leaf area protruding above the water surface inR. maritimus. This indicates a functional significance of the petiole and leaf elongation response upon total submergence of this species.  相似文献

Resistance to complete submergence was tested in three Rumex species that occur in the Dutch river forelands. The species differ in both habitat and life history characteristics. The annual or biennial R. maritimus and the biennial or short lived perennial R. palustris grow on frequently flooded mud flats of low elevation, while the perennial R. thyrsiflorus can be found on dykes and river dunes that are seldom flooded. The flooding characteristics of the habitats of the three species were determined. These data were used to design experiments to determine the survival and biomass development of the three species during submergence and the influence of plant size and light level on these parameters. It was shown in all three species that plants submerged during daytime were much more resistant to flooding than those submerged at night. This is most probably due to the generation of oxygen or carbohydrates by underwater photosynthesis. Mature plants of the three species showed higher survival after submergence than juvenile plants, which might be caused by higher carbohydrate levels in the taproots of mature plants. In addition, the three species clearly differed in survival and biomass development during submergence. Rumex thyrsiflorus , the species least subjected to flooding, is least tolerant to complete submergence. Rumex maritimus , which can avoid the floods by having a short life cycle, is less tolerant to submergence than R. palustris , which has to survive the floods as a vegetative plant. It was noted that some plants that survived the flooding period itself, still died in the following period of drained conditions, possibly due to post-anoxic injury.  相似文献

Submergence ofRumex crispus L. andR. palustris Sm. stimulates elongation of the youngest petiole. InR. palustris this response can be mimicked partially by exposure to exogenous ethylene. In both species, petiole elongation induced by ethylene and/or submergence is distributed nearly equally over the whole petiole length and is almost completely attributable to increased cell expansion. InR. acetosa L., extension of the youngest petiole is inhibited by submergence of the whole plant. The strongest growth inhibition within the youngest petiole was observed in the most distal parts and is probably the result of reduced cell expansion.  相似文献

To characterize underwater photosynthetic performance in some terrestrial plants, we determined (i) underwater light acclimation (ii) underwater photosynthetic response to dissolved CO2, and (iii) underwater photosynthetic capacity during prolonged submergence in three species that differ in submergence tolerance: Phalaris arundinacea, Rumex crispus (both submergence-tolerant) and Arrhenatherum elatius (submergence-intolerant). None of the species had adjusted to low irradiance after 1 week of submergence. Under non-submerged (control) conditions, only R. crispus displayed shade acclimation. Submergence increased the apparent quantum yield in this species, presumably because of the enhanced CO2 affinity of the elongated leaves. In control plants of the grass species P. arundinacea and A. elatius, CO2 affinities were higher than for R. crispus. The underwater photosynthetic capacity of R. crispus increased during 1 month of submergence. In P. arundinacea photosynthesis remained constant during 1 month of submergence at normal irradiance; at low irradiance a reduction in photosynthetic capacity was observed after 2 weeks, although there was no tissue degeneration. In contrast, underwater photosynthesis of the submergence-intolerant species A. elatius collapsed rapidly under both irradiances, and this was accompanied by leaf decay. To describe photosynthesis versus irradiance curves, four models were evaluated. The hyperbolic tangent produced the best goodness-of-fit, whereas the rectangular hyperbola (Michaelis-Menten model) gave relatively poor results.  相似文献

Enhanced soil respiration in response to global warming may substantially increase atmospheric CO2 concentrations above the anthropogenic contribution, depending on the mechanisms underlying the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration. Here, we compared short‐term and seasonal responses of soil respiration to a shifting thermal environment and variable substrate availability via laboratory incubations. To analyze the data from incubations, we implemented a novel process‐based model of soil respiration in a hierarchical Bayesian framework. Our process model combined a Michaelis–Menten‐type equation of substrate availability and microbial biomass with an Arrhenius‐type nonlinear temperature response function. We tested the competing hypotheses that apparent thermal acclimation of soil respiration can be explained by depletion of labile substrates in warmed soils, or that physiological acclimation reduces respiration rates. We demonstrated that short‐term apparent acclimation can be induced by substrate depletion, but that decreasing microbial biomass carbon (MBC) is also important, and lower MBC at warmer temperatures is likely due to decreased carbon‐use efficiency (CUE). Observed seasonal acclimation of soil respiration was associated with higher CUE and lower basal respiration for summer‐ vs. winter‐collected soils. Whether the observed short‐term decrease in CUE or the seasonal acclimation of CUE with increased temperatures dominates the response to long‐term warming will have important consequences for soil organic carbon storage.  相似文献

The role of gibberellin (GA) and ethylene in submergence-induced petiole elongation was studied in two species of the genus Rumex. Analysis of endogenous GAs in the flooding-tolerant Rumex palustris Sm. and the intolerant Rumex acetosa L. by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry showed for both species the presence of GA1, GA4, GA9, GA19, GA20 and GA53. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of R. palustris petiole tissue of submerged plants showed an increase in levels of 13-OH GAs, especially GA1, compared with drained plants. This effect could be mimicked by application of 5 μL L−1 ethylene. In R. acetosa, no differences between levels of GAs in drained or submerged plants were found. In R. palustris, both submergence and ethylene treatment sensitized petioles to exogenous gibberellic acid (GA3). In R. acetosa the effect was opposite, i.e. submergence and ethylene de-sensitized petioles to GA3. Our results demonstrate the dual effect of ethylene in the submergence response related to flooding tolerance, i.e. in the flooding-tolerant R. palustris ethylene causes an increased concentration of and sensitivity to GA with respect to petiole elongation while in the intolerant R. acetosa ethylene reduces growth independent of GAs. We investigated seasonal variation in dark respiration and photosynthesis by measuring gas exchange characteristics on Pinus radiata and Populus deltoides under field conditions each month for 1 year. The field site in the South Island of New Zealand is characterized by large day-to-day and seasonal changes in air temperature. The rate of foliar respiration at a base temperature of 10 °C ( R 10) in both pine and poplar was found to be greater during autumn and winter and displayed a strong downward adjustment in warmer months. The sensitivity of instantaneous leaf respiration to a 10 °C increase in temperature ( Q 10) was also greater during the winter period. The net effect of this strong acclimation was that the long-term temperature response of respiration was essentially flat over a wide range of ambient temperatures. Seasonal changes in photosynthesis were sensitive to temperature but largely independent of leaf nitrogen concentration or stomatal conductance. Over the range of day time growth temperatures (5–32 °C), we did not observe strong evidence of photosynthetic acclimation to temperature, and the long-term responses of photosynthetic parameters to ambient temperature were similar to previously published instantaneous responses. The ratio of foliar respiration to photosynthetic capacity ( R d/ A sat) was significantly greater in winter than in spring/summer. This indicates that there is little likelihood that respiration would be stimulated significantly in either of these species with moderate increases in temperature – in fact net carbon uptake was favoured at moderately higher temperatures. Model calculations demonstrate that failing to account for strong thermal acclimation of leaf respiration influences determinations of leaf carbon exchange significantly, especially for the evergreen conifer.  相似文献

Temperature acclimation of respiration may contribute to climatic adaptation and thus differ among populations from contrasting climates. Short-term temperature responses of foliar dark respiration were measured in 33-yr-old trees of jack pine (Pinus banksiana) in eight populations of wide-ranging origin (44-55 degrees N) grown in a common garden at 46.7 degrees N. It was tested whether seasonal adjustments in respiration and population differences in this regard resulted from changes in base respiration rate at 5 degrees C (R(5)) or Q(10) (temperature sensitivity) and covaried with nitrogen and soluble sugars. In all populations, acclimation was manifest primarily through shifts in R(5) rather than altered Q(10). R(5) was higher in cooler periods in late autumn and winter and lower in spring and summer, inversely tracking variation in ambient air temperature. Overall, R(5) covaried with sugars and not with nitrogen. Although acclimation was comparable among all populations, the observed seasonal ranges in R(5) and Q(10) were greater in populations originating from warmer than from colder sites. Population differences in respiratory traits appeared associated with autumnal cold hardening. Common patterns of respiratory temperature acclimation among biogeographically diverse populations provide a basis for predicting respiratory carbon fluxes in a wide-ranging species.  相似文献

Flooding imposes stress upon terrestrial plants since it severely hampers gas exchange rates between the shoot and the environment. The resulting oxygen deficiency is considered to be the major problem for submerged plants. Oxygen microelectrode studies have, however, shown that aquatic plants maintain relatively high internal oxygen pressures under water, and even may release oxygen via the roots into the sediment, also in dark. Based on these results, we challenge the dogma that oxygen pressures in submerged terrestrial plants immediately drop to levels at which aerobic respiration is impaired. The present study demonstrates that the internal oxygen pressure in the petioles of Rumex palustris plants under water is indeed well above the critical oxygen pressure for aerobic respiration, provided that the air‐saturated water is not completely stagnant. The beneficial effect of shoot acclimation of this terrestrial plant species to submergence for gas exchange capacity is also shown. Shoot acclimation to submergence involved a reduction of the diffusion resistance to gases, which was not only functional by increasing diffusion of oxygen into the plant, but also by increasing influx of CO2, which enhances underwater photosynthesis.  相似文献

Abstract. Oxygen uptake characteristics of the roots of three Rumex species were compared, and related to kinetics of the respiratory system and to root anatomy. The observed differences could not be explained by differences in fundamental characteristics of the oxygen uptake system: with all three species, cytochrome-mediated respiration contributed 70% and cyanide-insensitive (alternative) respiration 30% of the total respiration rate, and apparent Km values of cytochrome oxidase were lower than those obtained for the alternative oxidase in all cases. However, differences in critical oxygen pressure for respiration (COPR) and in apparent Km for oxygen, were strongly correlated with differences in root porosity and root diameter. Km(O2) values at high and low temperatures were determined, and from Arrhenius plots of oxygen uptake rates between 11 and 32°C, the role of diffusional impedance could be estimated. Root respiration of Rumex maritimus and R. crispus , both with high root porosity, but differing in root diameter, had a low Km for oxygen (3–7 mmol m−3). In contrast with this were the responses of R. thvrsiflorus , which has thin roots but low root porosity: a high Km (10-20 mmol m−3) was found at all temperatures. The role of diffusional impedance as a function of temperature in oxygen uptake rate by the three species is discussed and related to the differential resistance of the species towards flooding.  相似文献

An assessment of the performance of a wetland dominated by opportunistic weeds in removing nutrients from a secondary sewage effluent was carried out at Thredbo in Kosciusko National Park. Water quality sampling of the inflow and outflow showed a reduction in turbidity, pH and conductivity with passage through the wetland. Dissolved oxygen levels also decreased. In summer 1982, the phosphorus toad of 1.8 kg P day-1 was reduced by 44% as wastewater moved through the wetland, and the nitrogen load of 6.4 kg N day-1 by 65%. Winter retentions were 10% and 14% of inflowing loads, respectively. In 1983 there was a net release of phosphorus and reduced retention of nitrogen. This was regarded as being a result of physical disturbance of the wetland. Vegetation downstream of the effluent inflow was dominated by the opportunistic weeds Epilobium sarmantaceum and Rumex crispus. Upstream, Carex gaudichaudiana and Baeckea gunniana dominated. Marked seasonal changes in vigour and biomass were recorded. Plants, but not sediments, downstream of the inflow contained more nutrients than those upstream. Seed bank analysis showed more seeds downstream than upstream. A moist treatment promoted more seed germination than a flooded treatment. E. sarmantaceum and to a lesser extent R. crispus dominated in each treatment. In an effort to promote greater water retention and replacement of the weed species, channels in the wetland have been blocked with gravel and planted with Phragmites australis and Schoenoplectus validus.  相似文献

Effect of seasonal and experimental acclimation to temperature upon aquatic oxygen consumption of the sea anemone Actinia equina L. has been studied in animals from two shore levels during the summer of 1981 and the winter of 1982. A clear influence of both season and shore level on the weight exponent is registered, higher values occurring during the summer. Seasonally acclimated animals from the upper shore showed perfect winter-summer compensation with lateral translation to the right of the R-T curve in response to warm acclimation while this pattern was coupled with clockwise rotation and partial compensation in specimens collected from the low shore. Experimental acclimation during the summer resulted in partial compensation at Ta 15°C and no acclimation was found at Ta 25°C; during the winter, only high shore specimens exhibited compensatory responses. A significant increase in oxygen consumption, regardless of shore level, occurs in winter in both seasonally and experimentally acclimated animals.  相似文献

Abstract It is possible to remove the innate dormancy of seeds of Rumex crispus L and Rumex obtusifolius L. by an initial period of low-temperature stratification, providing the seeds are then transferred to a higher temperature. The lower the initial temperature within the range 1.5°-15°C, the greater the germination; there is no stratification effect at 20°C. Although 10°C and 15°C were shown to be suitable for both stratification and for the process of germination itself, neither temperature results in any germination if given constantly: a change from a lower to a higher temperature is essential. The optimum period for stratification depends on two separate processes which occur during the treatment–a rapid loss of innate or primary dormancy and a slower development of induced or secondary dormancy. Within the range 1.5°-15°C the rate of loss of innate dormancy appears to be independent of light and is probably independent of temperature. In contrast, the rate of induction of secondary dormancy increases with increase in temperature, and is more rapid in the dark than the light. The rate of induction of secondary dormancy during stratification is greater in R. crispus than in R. obtusifolius. As a consequence, maximum germination was obtained in both species after stratification at 1.5°C in the light, the optimum period of treatment being about 4 weeks in R. Obtusifolius and 6 weeks in R. crispus, while the maximum germination obtained and the optimal period of stratification decrease in both species with increase in stratification temperature.  相似文献

Past research has provided compelling evidence that variation in flooding duration is the predominant factor underlying plant species distribution along elevation gradients in river floodplains. The role of seasonal variation in flooding, however, is far from clear. We addressed this seasonal effect for 10 grassland species by testing the hypothesis that all species can survive longer when flooded in winter than when flooded in summer. We carried out an inundation experiment under simulated conditions of summer and winter flooding in the greenhouse. The results showed that all species survived longer under winter floods than under summer floods. However, responses upon flooding were species-specific. All summer flood-tolerant species had high tolerance for winter floods as well, but summer flood sensitive species survived either a little longer, or dramatically longer when flooded under simulated winter conditions. Next, we examined whether winter or summer survival best predicted the lower distribution limits of the species as measured in a natural flooding gradient after an extremely long winter flood. We found a strong significant relationship between the lower distribution limits of species in the field and their tolerance to summer floods, although we measured the lower limits 14 years after the latest major summer flood. In contrast, no such significant relationship existed with species tolerance to winter floods. Some relatively intolerant species occurred at much higher floodplain elevations as was expected from their tolerance to winter inundation in the experiments. This suggests that zonation patterns as created by occasional summer floods may be maintained for a long time, probably due to the limited ability of species to re-colonise lower positions in the floodplain.  相似文献

Submerged macrophytes play a key role in maintaining a clear‐water phase and promoting biodiversity in shallow aquatic ecosystems. Since their abundance has declined globally due to anthropogenic activities, it is important to include them in aquatic ecosystem restoration programs. Macrophytes establishment in early spring is crucial for the subsequent growth of other warm‐adapted macrophytes. However, factors affecting this early establishment of submerged macrophytes have not been fully explored yet. Here, we conducted an outdoor experiment from winter to early spring using the submerged macrophytes Potamogeton crispus and Vallisneria spinulosa to study the effects of shading, nutrient loading, snail herbivory (Radix swinhoei), and their interactions on the early growth and stoichiometric characteristics of macrophytes. The results show that the effects strongly depend on macrophyte species. Biomass and number of shoots of P. crispus decreased, and internode length increased during low light conditions, but were not affected by nutrient loading. P. crispus shoot biomass and number showed hump‐shaped responses to increased snail biomass under full light. In contrast, the biomass of the plant linearly decreased with snail biomass under low light. This indicates an interaction of light with snail herbivory. Since snails prefer grazing on periphyton over macrophytes, a low density of snails promoted growth of P. crispus by removing periphyton competition, while herbivory on the macrophyte increased during a high density of snails. The growth of V. spinulosa was not affected by any of the factors, probably because of growth limitation by low temperature. Our study demonstrates that the interaction of light with snail herbivory may affect establishment and growth of submerged macrophytes in early spring. Macrophyte restoration projects may thus benefit from lowering water levels to increase light availability and making smart use of cold‐adapted herbivores to reduce light competition with periphyton.  相似文献
