Summary The resting spore morphology of the antarctic diatoms Coscinodiscus furcatus Karsten and Thalassiosira australis Peragallo are described. Both species form endogenous resting spores. The spore valve of C. furcatus differ from those of the vegetative cells primarily by (i) a greater convexity and (ii) a coarser and more distinctly fasciculated areolation. This resting spore is identical to the diatom traditionally identified as C. stellaris var. symbolophorus (Grunow) Jørgensen in the Antarctic. The resting spore of T. australis differs from the vegetative cells by (i) a lack of clusters of strutted processes in a modified ring on valve face, (ii) a coarser areolation and tangential rows of areolae and (iii) a narrower and more simply structured girdle. The resting spore valve of T. australis has been described as belonging to a separate species, Actinocyclus excentricus Peragallo.  相似文献

The distribution of viable diatom resting stages in sediments on the Swedish west coast was assessed by the most probable number (MPN) culture technique. Multivariate analyses correlated benthic and pelagic environmental factors to the observed spatial variations in the size and taxonomic composition of the propagule bank. dry weight) and were dominated by the genera Skeletonema, Detonula, Chaetoceros, and Thalassiosira. Size of the propagule bank was primarily related to planktonic biomass (measured as chl a) and was highest in the Orust‐Tjörn fjord system. Species composition in this fjord system was dominated by D. confervacea (Cleve) Gran and T. nordenskioeldii Cleve in contrast to stations on the outer coast, which contained more cells of T. minima Gaarder, Asterionellopsis glacialis (Castracane) Round, and Leptocylindrus danicus Cleve. These taxonomic variations were principally influenced by deep water oxygen concentrations and water column stability. Benthic resting cells of S. costatum (Greville) Cleve were abundant all along the coast but showed reduced viability in low oxygen environments. Calculations based on MPN values estimated that resuspension of sediment could provide a sizable inoculum to the plankton, although the development of planktonic blooms will also depend on forces of hydrography and weather. Although benthic resting stages may not be absolutely necessary for survival of all diatoms, these cells may be important in determining species cycles, succession, and the spatial distribution of diatoms.  相似文献

The toxic effects of copper on resting spore formation and viability in the marine diatom Chaetoceros protuberans Lauder were determined both with and without silicic acid added to the medium. With silicic acid available, partial inhibition of resting spore formation occurred only at the highest cupric ion activity (pCu 8.6), while the percentage of cells forming spores at pCu's 10.2 and 11.3 was nearly the same as in the controls. Without silicic acid added to the medium, sporulation was completely inhibited at pCu 8.6 and greatly inhibited, at pCu 10.2. At pCu 11.3 and in the controls, the rate of spore formation was less than 50%. The results indicate that the inhibition of resting spore formation by copper is related to the concentration of silicic acid available to cells of C protuberans. This is consistent with previous studies which show that copper toxicity during vegetative growth involves interference with silicification in diatoms and is a Junction of the silicic acid concentration of the medium. Viable resting spores of C. protuberans were still present in cultures following exposure to elevated copper concentrations during a 100-day incubation period. This indicates that resting spores can serve to enhance diatom survival in areas polluted by heavy metals.  相似文献

The snow alga Trachelomonas kolii is transferred from the Euglenophyta (Euglenales) to the Chlorophyta (Volvocales) as Chlainomonas kolii comb. nov. As a result of critical examination of both living and type material, this species was found to have 4 flagella per vegetative cell, true starch, and 1 axial plastid per cell with several peripheral lobes. Vegetative cells of Trachelomonas kolii were described originally as having 1 flagellum, lacking true starch but having paramylum, and as having several parietal plastids per cell. The reticulate markings on the outer envelope of vegetative cells were found to be different from those in the original illustrations. Vegetative cells and resting spores of Chlainomonas kolii and Chlainomonas rubra are compared. The similarities of resting spores of Chlainomonas kolii and Chlamydomonas nivalis are discussed. These are the first records of Chlainomonas kolii from snow in Washington State.  相似文献

A clear shift from vegetative cells to auxospores and resting spores in Thalassiosira australis was observed in the water column and sinking fluxes under the fast ice near Syowa Station in the austral summer of 2005/2006. This is the first report of the auxosporulation by T. australis in situ. Resting spores were also observed in the sediment even before new spore formation, suggesting that T. australis can overwinter in the sediment. Heterotrophic dinoflagellates ingested and digested vegetative cells and auxospores but did not digest resting spores, suggesting a high tolerance of resting spores to grazing by heterotrophic dinoflagellates. We discuss the possible life history and overwintering strategy that T. australis uses in an Antarctic coastal area to cope with the unpredictable timing of sea ice growth and decay.  相似文献

A nitrogen limitation technique elicited the entire life cycle of the marine centric diatoms Chaetoceros diadema (Ehr.) Gran and Leptocylindrus danicus Cleve. In C. diadema the sexual cycle followed the same pattern as in the previously investigated C. didymus. Sexuality took place in narrow diameter cells, only at 2 and 5° C, and was seldom seen. Resting spore formation took place in cells of all sizes and at all temperatures at which the species grew vegetatively (2–15° C). The L. danicus life cycle is probably unique among diatoms. Nitrogen depletion induced sexuality in the entire culture at 10 and 15° C if the cell diameter was narrow (3–8 μm). Auxospore formation was followed by resting spore formation directly within the auxospore. In C. diadema, as in most centric diatoms, resting spores are not an obligate part of the life cycle, but they are in L. danicus. Resting spore formation is a versatile adaptive response in C. diadema, depending only on nitrogen depletion, although promoted by low temperatures. In L. danicus the linkage to the sexual process sharply limits conditions under which resting spores can form.  相似文献

Resting spore formation and Si:N drawdown ratios were investigated under iron (Fe)- and nitrogen (N)-limited conditions using a unialgal culture of Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii and natural phytoplankton assemblages during the spring bloom in the Oyashio region. In the unialgal culture of T. nordenskioeldii, 20% and 100% of the cells formed resting spores under Fe- and N-limited conditions, respectively. The Si:N drawdown ratios were 2- and 14-fold higher in Fe- and N-limited conditions, respectively, compared to Fe- and N-sufficient conditions. At the start of the natural phytoplankton incubation, 18 among 47 identified diatom species were known resting spore-forming species. Approximately 15 common diatom species formed resting spores under Fe- and N-limited conditions. During the natural phytoplankton incubation, the percentage of the resting spores increased with time under both Fe- and N-limited conditions, reaching 25% and 40% of total diatom abundance, respectively. The Si:N drawdown ratios significantly increased with an increase in the contribution of resting spores in both the unialgal culture and natural phytoplankton incubations. These results suggest that if the bloom dominated by neritic, resting spore-forming diatom species decline by either Fe- or N-depletion, Si may be utilized preferentially to N in the upper mixed layer due to the formation of heavily silicified resting spores.  相似文献

Electron microscope investigations of the siliceous frustule show that the diatom described by Hustedt as Stephanodiscus subsalsus (A. Cleve) Hust. is not Skeletonema subsalsum (A. Cleve) Bethge (Melosira subsalsa A. Cleve) but is Microsiphona potamos Weber. This species is so similar to Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve and Skeletonema subsalsum that the combination Skeletonema potamos (Weber) Hasle is suggested. Present records classify Skeletonema potamos as a freshwater species of lakes and rivers. In Sandusky Bay, Lake Erie (U.S.A.) and in River Wümme, a tributary of the River Weser (Germany) it grows with Skeletonema subsalsum. In nature, and when grown in cultures at a salinity of 0%, the processes are extremely short; when grown at salinities of 2% or more, the processes are much longer.  相似文献

The formation of resting spores in diatoms is a common phenomenon in neritic environments. Here we report on resting spores of the genus Chaetoceros associated with a layer of increased chlorophyll fluorescence, at a depth of more than 200 m, north of Brabant Island and in Wilhelmina Bay, southeast coast of the Gerlache Strait (64°41.0′S, 62°0.5′W). Six species of Chaetoceros were identified by the morphology and size of the resting spores. Given that Chaetoceros spp., both in vegetative cells and as resting spores, are commonly found in Antarctic coastal surface waters, their location at depth could represent the pelagic “waiting” or “seeding” populations mentioned for other environments. The morphology of single-sporangial isolates of lettuce, tomato, mustard, and oat Olpidium brassicae (Wor.) Dang. growing in their respective hosts as well as in cowpea were compared in situ and after extraction from the roots. The sporangia, zoospores, and resting spores of all isolates were within the established limits of the species. Single exit tubes or pores predominated which means that these isolates should not be transferred to the genus Pleotrachelus. A satisfactory assay for the presence of resting spores was developed by air-drying of the roots for a week or longer. This treatment killed zoospores and vegetative sporangia, but not resting spores. Factors affecting resting spore formation were investigated unsuccessfully. The thermal death point of zoospores of mustard isolates that did not form resting spores was between 40 and 45 C for 10 min.  相似文献

Feeding response of two copepods Neocalanus flemingeri and Calanus sinicus on cultures of three life-forms; vegetative cells, resting spores and resting cells, of Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus was investigated. N. flemingeri fed heavily on the vegetative cells but scarcely responded to feed on the resting spores. C. sinicus showed significantly higher filtering rate on the vegetative cells and resting cells than on the resting spores. Survival of the three life-forms of C. pseudocurvisetus after gut passage of the copepods was also studied. The resting spores could germinate from fecal pellets of both N. flemingeri and C. sinicus; however, both the vegetative cells and the resting cells could not survive ingestion by the copepods. These results suggest that resting spore forming diatoms, such as C. pseudocurvisetus form spores which have a low nutritional value and during gut passage are largely indigestible due to the heavily silicified frustules and thus minimize the effects of grazing by copepods.  相似文献

Data on the qualitative and quantitative composition of resting stages of planktonic microalgae in recent marine sediments of Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) over the period 2000–2007 are presented. A total of sixty one morphological forms of resting stages represented by dinoflagellate and raphidophyte cysts and diatom spores and resting cells were recorded in the sediment samples. This study revealed cysts of the potentially toxic species Alexandrium tamarense, A. cf. minutum, Alexandrium sp., Gymnodinium catenatum (PSP toxin producers), and Protoceratium reticulatum (yessotoxin producer); resting cells of Pseudo-nitzschia sp. (potential producer of domoic acid); and cysts of bloom-forming species Cochlodinium cf. polykrikoides and Heterosigma cf. akashiwo.  相似文献

To date, the life stages of pelagophytes have been poorly described. This study describes the ability of Aureoumbra lagunensis to enter a resting stage in response to environmental stressors including high temperature, nutrient depletion, and darkness as well as their ability to revert from resting cells back to vegetative cells after exposure to optimal light, temperature, and nutrient conditions. Resting cells became round in shape and larger in size, filled with red accumulation bodies, had smaller and fewer plastids, more vacuolar space, contained lower concentrations of chl a and RNA, displayed reduced photosynthetic efficiency, and lower respiration rates relative to vegetative cells. Analysis of vegetative and resting cells using Raman microspectrometry indicated resting cells were enriched in sterols within red accumulation bodies and were depleted in pigments relative to vegetative cells. Upon reverting to vegetative cells, cells increased their chl a content, photosynthetic efficiency, respiration rate, and growth rate and lost accumulation bodies as they became smaller. The time required for resting cells to resume vegetative growth was proportional to both the duration and temperature of dark storage, possibly due to higher metabolic demands on stored energy (sterols) reserves during longer period of storage and/or storage at higher temperature (20°C vs. 10°C). Resting cells kept in the dark at 10°C for 7 months readily reverted back to vegetative cells when transferred to optimal conditions. Thus, the ability of Aureoumbra to form a resting stage likely enables them to form annual blooms within subtropic ecosystems, resist temperature extremes, and may facilitate geographic expansion via anthropogenic transport.  相似文献

Viable diatom and dinoflagellate resting stages were recovered from sediments in Koljö Fjord on the west coast of Sweden. To determine the maximum survival time of buried resting stages, samples from sediment depths down to 50?cm were incubated at temperatures of 3, 10 and 18?°C. Sediment cores were dated by 210Pb and the age of samples containing viable resting stages was determined using the constant rate of supply model. Dilution cultures of surface sediments allowed semiquantitative estimates of the potential seed bank. Dinoflagellate cysts from species such as Diplopsalis sp., Gymnodinium nolleri, Oblea rotunda and Protoceratium reticulatum were viable down to 15?cm depth, or 37 years old. Spores and resting cells of the diatoms Chaetoceros spp., Detonula confervacea and Skeletonema costatum were viable to over 40?cm depth, and may have been buried for many decades. The seed bank of living resting stages in surficial sediments was found to be rich (c. 57000 diatom resting stages g?1 wet weight and c. 200 dinoflagellate cysts g?1 wet weight), and the percentage of viable resting stages was higher for spore- and cyst-forming species. The oxygen-deficient sediments in Koljö Fjord appear to be a natural conservator of cell viability, a condition not easily simulated in laboratory studies. These results are ecologically important since spores and cysts are a repository of genetic material able to repopulate waters if resuspended and exposed to suitable light, temperature and nutrients.  相似文献

Since 1995, blooms of the harmful dinoflagellate, Cochlodinium polykrikoides, have caused considerable mortality of aquatic organisms and economic loss in Korea. However, little is known about the life cycle of the species, except for the planktonic vegetative stage; therefore, the aim of this paper was to elucidate the life cycle of C. polykrikoides. Its life cycle has two morphologically different stages: an armored and an unarmored vegetative stage. Armored vegetative cells were found in seawater samples collected in late-November and developed into four-cell chained, unarmored vegetative cells under laboratory culture. In samples collected in late-May, both the armored and unarmored types (vegetative swimming stage) occurred; the former easily developed into an unarmored vegetative cell type, suggesting that the armoured–unarmored transition occurs as early as May. A presumptive resting cyst, round but folded at one side, was produced from armored type cells in laboratory conditions. It was also collected from natural bottom sediments, which suggests it is the dormant resting cyst of C. polykrikoides.  相似文献

Summary The operculate genus Chytridium Braun is emended and restricted to approximately 25 known species and several incompletely known members which lack an apophysis and develop much like species of Rhizophydium, insofar as the zoosporangium and absorbing or rhizoidal system are concerned, and form endobiotic or intramatrical resting spores. This interpretation corresponds fairly closely to Braun's diagnosis of the type species.A new genus, Diplochytridium, is established to segregate the former Chytridium species with an endobiotic or intramatrical apophysis or prosporangium and resting spores, which may develop sexually or asexually. Some of these species have a well-defined endo-exogenous alternation of growth and development in which the apophysis appears to function as a prosporangium. As interpreted here, Diplochytridium includes approximately 20 of the known species.Another new genus, Canteria, is created for a parasite of Mougeotia which Canter first described as a species of Phlyctidium but later found to develop endobiotic resting spores or zygospores by the fusion of conjugation tubes.  相似文献

Recent questions concerning the taxonomic status of the diatom genus Gomphoneis Cleve have prompted critical examination of the valvar morphology of a species originally included in the genus. Light and electron microscopic observations on G. mammilla (Ehr.) Cl. show that the characteristics put forth by Cleve to delineate the genus are present in this taxon. Striae composed of two rows of simple areolae located in depressions on the valve and longitudinal lines formed by a broad internal axial plate were observed in G. mammilla. The presence of two apical spines on the headpole and the structure of a bilobed apical pore field located at the footpole are described, in addition to other valve features. Valve morphology of G. mammilla is compared with that of doubly-punctate Gomphonema species with the result that we recommend the two genera remain separate.  相似文献

Ice diatom assemblages in the Canadian Arctic are dominated by the Naviculaceae, a family which includes the genus Stenoneis Cleve. A taxonomic history of S. inconspicua var. baculus (Cleve) Cleve (including type material of Navicula baculus Cleve) is presented with morphological data including the first SEM views of the genus. Stenoneis inconspicua var. baculus was compared with S. obtuserostrata (Hustedt) comb. nov. (basionym: Navicula obtuserostrata Hustedt). In the SEM, external, short, flattened siliceous ridges were revealed beside the proximal parts of the raphe branches and central pores. This may be a significant taxonomic feature of the genus. Valves of S. inconspicua var. baculus ranged from 40–103 μm in length, 7–11 μm in width and had 17–20 striae in 10 μm, whereas valves of S. obtuserostrata were shorter (27–53 μm), narrower (6–7.5 μm) and more finely striated (24–30 in 10 μm). Both taxa have a circumpolar Arctic distribution.  相似文献

Not only cyclic polypeptide antibiotics such as polymyxin B, colistin and gramicidin S but also aminoglycoside antibiotics such as streptomycin, kanamycin, gentamicin and kanamycin derivatives combined with the resting spores of Bacillus subtilis and inhibited outgrowth or vegetative growth after germination. All the antibiotics other than gramicidin S were released from the resting spores and their inhibitory action was reversed by the addition of Ca2+ and Fe3+. As the above antibiotics have free amino (or guanidine) groups in common, it was assumed that such groups play an important role in binding of the antibiotics to the resting spores. Moreover, it was shown that protamine and poly-l-lysine were also bound to the resting spores and were released from them by Ca2+. On the other hand, free carboxyl groups had been demonstrated in the outermost surface of the resting spores in a previous study. Thus, we assume that the mode of binding of the antibiotics to the resting spores may be due to the formation of reinforced ionic bonds between amino (or guanidine) groups in the antibiotics and carboxyl groups on the spore surface.  相似文献
