Females of ormiine tachinids fly to their hosts' calling songs and deposit larvae on the host or nearby. Two species,Ormia ochracea (Bigot) andO. depleta (Wiedemann), were reared for at least 8 generations, making them the first ormiines to be laboratory-propagated. Both were reared on natural hosts:Gryllus spp. field crickets (principallyG. rubens) forO. ochracea, andScapteriscus spp. mole crickets forO. depleta. Commercially rearedAcheta domesticus tested as hosts were less satisfactory. Hosts were parasitized manually or by confinement with flies or planidia (infective larvae). Transparent, cylindrical, sleeved cages were designed to accommodate parasitized hosts and pupae and adults ofO. ochracea. Cages were joined to allowO. ochracea to cycle through its stages with minimum handling and care. Parasitized hosts and pupae ofO. depleta were held in containers of damp sand; adults were held in cages developed forO. ochracea. Adults of both species were maintained on applesauce, sugar cubes, powdered milk, and water. The life cycle ofO. ochracea was about 31 days and ofO. depleta about 36 days, with the principal difference being the time required for planidia to complete development. InO. ochracea the adults emerged synchronously but inO. depleta males preceded females. In both species sex ratio was generally I: 1 and females lived slightly longer than males.O. depleta from our laboratory colony have been released for biological control of mole crickets.   相似文献

Temporal analyses were applied to the tone pulses within the courtship songs of Drosophila melanogaster, D. simulans, their interspecific hybrid, and behavioral mutants of D. melanogaster.Linear regression was performed on various parameters of the song pulses (cycles per pulse, absolute peak amplitude, intrapulse frequency, number of peaks in fast Fourier transform, width of the primary frequency peak, and interpulse interval), as a function of their positions within pulse trains. Significant differences in the slope values of these two species and of the mutant genotypes allowed for discriminative quantification of temporal changes within trains. These results are discussed in relation to previous kinds of temporal analyses of Drosophilacourtship songs and also with regard to the mechanisms of song production.  相似文献

Plant growth rates and agar characteristics were compared for two agarophytes,Gracilaria chilensis (Gracilariales, Rhodophyta) andG. truncata, so that the suitability ofG. truncata for mariculture could be assessed.G. chilensis plants grew steadily in the laboratory culture system at rates of 5–8% day-1 (mean Relative Growth Rate) throughout the 6 week experimental period, with no decline in health.G. truncata plants grew at rates of 2–4% day-1 for 5 weeks, but during the sixth week their apical tips became necrotic and growth rates fell to zero. There was no significant difference in the dry matter content (as a percentage of their wet weight) between the two species ofGracilaria, with values falling in the range of 16–19%. Slightly higher agar yields were obtained from alkali-treatedG. chilensis (17–20% dry matter) than from untreatedG. truncata (16–18%) although the agar fromG. truncata formed softer gels from which it was more difficult to recover. The gel strength of untreated agar extracted fromG. chilensis was very low (ca. 100 g cm-2 for a 1% gel) but when an alkali treatment step was included in the extraction process, it increased to 520 g cm-2 for a 1% gel. Contrary to an earlier report, untreatedG. truncata agar also had a very low gel strength (ca. 100 g cm-2 for a 1.5% gel), but it rose to only 167 g cm-2 after alkaline treatment.  相似文献

The field cricket species, Gryllus firmusand G. pennsylvanicus, occur in a mosaic hybrid zone that roughly parallels the eastern slope of the Appalachian mountains in the northeastern United States. It is important to know what role, if any, the calling song plays in mate choice in sympatric and allopatric populations. In this report, we present results on the variability of calling song properties along transects across this hybrid zone. We also present the results of experiments on phonotactic selectivity of females from an allopatric population of G. firmus. The male calling song of allopatric G. firmuswas significantly slower in temporal rhythm (i. e., chirp and pulse repetition rates) and lower in pitch (i.e., dominant frequency) than that of allopatric G. pennsylvanicus.Calling song properties of males recorded in the hybrid zone varied considerably in temporal and spectral properties. In two-stimulus (choice) phonotaxis experiments, allopatric females of G. firmuspreferred synthetic calling songs with conspecific pulse repetition rates over songs that had lower and higher pulse rates. This preference persisted even when the sound pressure levels of alternative stimuli were unequal. Therefore, allopatric females of G. firmuscan discriminate between conspecific and heterospecific calling songs. Whether or not this same selectivity is present in sympatric populations remains unclear. Investigations of phonotactic selectivity in other allopatric and sympatric populations of both species are currently under way.  相似文献

Summary Plants ofPicea abies (L.) Karst were grown in mycorrhizal association withTelephora terrestris (Pers. ex Fr.) andPisolithus tinctorius (Mich. ex Pers.) Coker and Couch on sphagnum peat in petri dishes or Perspex chambers. After 1 yearT. terrestris had formed prominent rhizomorphs which were characterized by light microscopy and investigated for32P-orthophosphate uptake. The absorbed phosphate was transported to sinks throughout the rhizomorphal system as well as into the plant. The calculated translocation velocity and flux rate in the rhizomorph were in the range of 1–3 cm/h and 0.5–4.0 × 10-10 mol cm-2 s-1, respectively. Label was observed to accumulate in the needles 2–3 days after application. Feeding a non-mycorrhized root with32P-orthophosphate led to an accumulation of label in needles within 1 h, but no radioactivity appeared in the associatedT. terrestris rhizomorphs. The rhizomorphs ofP. tinctorius revealed a higher structural differentiation than those ofT. terrestris. Translocation of labelled phosphorus through rhizomorphs ofP. tinctorius into spruce needles was also demonstrated.  相似文献

AxenicTrentepohlia odorata was cultured at three different NH4Cl levels (3.5 × 10–2, 3.5 × 10–3, 3.5 × 10–4 M) and three different light intensities (48, 76, 122 µmol m–2 s–1). Chloride had no effect on growth over this range of concentration. High light intensity and high NH4Cl concentration enhanced the specific growth rate. The carotenoid content increased under a combination of high light intensity and low N concentration. WhenD. bardawil was exposed to the same combination of growth conditions, there was an increase in its carotenoid content. The light saturation and the light inhibition constants (K s andK i, respectively) for growth, and the saturation constant (K m) for NH4Cl were determined. TheK s andK i values were higher inT. odorata (66.7 and> 122 mol m–2 s–1, respectively) than inD. bardawil (5.1 and 14.7 µmol m–2 s–1, respectively). TheK m value determined at 122 µmol m–2 s–1, however, was lower inT. odorata (0.048 µM) than inD. bardawil (0.062 µM).Author for correspondence  相似文献

Miniature heat balance-sap flow gauges were used to measure water flows in small-diameter roots (3–4 mm) in the undisturbed soil of a mature beech–oak–spruce mixed stand. By relating sap flow to the surface area of all branch fine roots distal to the gauge, we were able to calculate real time water uptake rates per root surface area (Js) for individual fine root systems of 0.5–1.0 m in length. Study aims were (i) to quantify root water uptake of mature trees under field conditions with respect to average rates, and diurnal and seasonal changes of Js, and (ii) to investigate the relationship between uptake and soil moisture θ, atmospheric saturation deficit D, and radiation I. On most days, water uptake followed the diurnal course of D with a mid-day peak and low night flow. Neighbouring roots of the same species differed up to 10-fold in their daily totals of Js (<100–2000 g m−2 d−1) indicating a large spatial heterogeneity in uptake. Beech, oak and spruce roots revealed different seasonal patterns of water uptake although they were extracting water from the same soil volume. Multiple regression analyses on the influence of D, I and θ on root water uptake showed that D was the single most influential environmental factor in beech and oak (variable selection in 77% and 79% of the investigated roots), whereas D was less important in spruce roots (50% variable selection). A comparison of root water uptake with synchronous leaf transpiration (porometer data) indicated that average water fluxes per surface area in the beech and oak trees were about 2.5 and 5.5 times smaller on the uptake side (roots) than on the loss side (leaves) given that all branch roots <2 mm were equally participating in uptake. Beech fine roots showed maximal uptake rates on mid-summer days in the range of 48–205 g m−2 h−1 (i.e. 0.7–3.2 mmol m−2 s−1), oak of 12–160 g m−2 h−1 (0.2–2.5 mmol m−2 s−1). Maximal transpiration rates ranged from 3 to 5 and from 5 to 6 mmol m−2 s−1 for sun canopy leaves of beech and oak, respectively. We conclude that instantaneous rates of root water uptake in beech, oak and spruce trees are above all controlled by atmospheric factors. The effects of different root conductivities, soil moisture, and soil hydraulic properties become increasingly important if time spans longer than a week are considered.  相似文献

Summary Calling characteristics of field crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus) differ between Pacific populations parasitized and unparasitized by a phonotactic fly (Ormia ochracea). Although we inferred that these song differences were due to natural selection by the fly, other environmental differences among sampling localities may also influence the cricket song. To evaluate the contribution of parasitoid pressure to variation in song structure, we analysed calls of crickets from five areas arrayed along a gradient of prevalence of parasitization. A novel use of canonical correlation analysis allowed us to test simultaneously the robustness of alternative hypotheses and their predictions. There is strong inference that selection pressures by phonotactic parasitoid flies have shaped song characteristics of field crickets in the Hawaiian Islands. Not all song components appear to have been equally affected by parasitoid selection and approximately 80–90% of total song variation among individuals is associated with other, unmeasured ecological and environmental attributes. That songs evolve is not disputed, but that they evolved in certain directions or that song structure is due to the action of certain forces, or that differences are due to random evolutionary events, or that they are the result of selection, or that they arise mainly in association with speciation — these are matters for speculation, debate, and analysis.Otte (1992, P. 25)  相似文献

The effect of nutrient pulse concentration and frequency onGracilaria chilensis Bird, McLachlanet O Oliveira growth and epiphyte abundace was investigated for plants grown in an indoor culture facility. The frequency of nutrient pulses (which ranged from 1 pulse to 4 pulses per 14 days) had a strong influence on plant growth, while pulse concentration (from 72 to 143 µM as ammonium) had a lesser influence. Growth became a function of total N flux only when plants received nutrient pulses at least twice per 14 days. Both pulse frequency and pulse concentration affected the abundance of epiphytic algae found attached toGracilaria thalli, but pulse frequency was the more significant of the two factors. Their effects could be combined into the single factor, total N flux. Both reasonableG. chilensis growth and low levels of epiphytes were achieved under these conditions (20 °C, 25 µ mol photon m–2 s–1 PAR) if ammonium was pulsed at relatively high concentrations (up to 150 µM) once every 7 days into otherwise nitrogen-depleted seawater.  相似文献

A thermophilic bacterium, which we designated as Geobacillus thermoleovorans 47b was isolated from a hot spring in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, Japan, on the basis of its ability to grow on bitter peptides as a sole carbon and nitrogen source. The cell-free extract from G. thermoleovorans 47b contained leucine aminopeptidase (LAP; EC 3.4.11.10), which was purified 164-fold to homogeneity in seven steps, using ammonium sulfate fractionation followed by the column chromatography using DEAE-Toyopearl, hydroxyapatite, MonoQ and Superdex 200 PC gel filtration, followed again by MonoQ and hydroxyapatite. The enzyme was a single polypeptide with a molecular mass of 42,977.2 Da, as determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization and time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and was found to be thermostable at 90°C for up to 1 h. Its optimal pH and temperature were observed to be 7.6–7.8 and 60°C, respectively, and it had high activity towards the substrates Leu-p-nitroanilide (p-NA)(100%), Arg-p-NA (56.3%) and LeuGlyGly (486%). The Km and Vmax values for Leu-p-NA and LeuGlyGly were 0.658 mM and 25.0 mM and 236.2 mol min–1 mg–1 protein and 1,149 mol min–1 mg–1 protein, respectively. The turnover rate (kcat) and catalytic efficiency (kcat/ Km) for Leu-p-NA and LeuGlyGly were 10,179 s–1 and 49,543 s–1 and 15,470 mM–1 s–1 and 1981.7 mM–1 s–1, respectively. The enzyme was strongly inhibited by EDTA, 1,10-phenanthroline, dithiothreitol, -mercaptoethanol, iodoacetate and bestatin; and its apoenzyme was found to be reactivated by Co2+ .  相似文献

Photosynthetic acclimation to reduced growth irradiances (650 and 200 µmol m–2 s–1) in Eleusine coracana (L.) Garten, a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-malic enzyme (NAD-ME) C4 species and Gomphrena globosa L., a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-malic enzyme (NADP-ME) C4 species were investigated. E. coracana plants acclimated in 4 and 8 d to 650 and 200 µmol m–2 s–1, respectively, whereas G. globosa plants took 8 and 10 d, respectively, to acclimate to the same irradiances. The acclimation to reduced irradiance was achieved in both species by greater partitioning of chlorophyll towards the light-harvesting antennae at the expense of functional components. However, magnitude of increase in the light-harvesting antenna was higher in E. coracana as compared to G. globosa. Superior photosynthetic acclimation to reduced irradiance in G. globosa was due to the smaller change in functions of the cytochrome b 6/f complex, photosystem (PS) 1 and PS2 leading to the higher carbon fixation rates compared to E. coracana.  相似文献

Six economically important species ofGracilaria, from a number of commercial sources around the world, andGracilariopsis lemaneiformis, collected from two Japanese localities, were used as the sources of raw material for the evaluation of agar quality. Agar-agar was extracted by pretreatment with various concentratrions of NaOH (0%, 3%, 5%, 7%, 10%) incubated at 80 °C for 2 h. Agar yield, viscosity, dynamic gelling and melting temperature and gel texture were determined for 1.5% agar gels. The highest agar yield was obtained fromG. gracilis from Argentina (39.5%), while the lowest was from BrazilianG. gracilis (13.37%). Dynamic gelling temperature was highest in the agar fromG. gracilis from Turkey (59 °C) and lowest in the non-alkali treated agar isolated fromG. edulis from Indonesia (46 °C). Melting temperature ranged from 96 °C in the agars from the JapaneseGracilariopsis andG. chilensis from Chile to 69 °C in the non-alkali treated agar fromG. edulis from Indonesia. In general, all species produced an agar with high gel strength after treatment with 5% NaOH, except forG. chilensis and the twoGracilariopsis species, which produced an agar with high gel strength after treatment with 3, 7 and 10% NaOH. The highest gel strength (2056 ± 13.6 cm–2) and hardest gel (261 ± 19.89 g mm–2) were obtained fromG. lemaneiformis from Japan (Oita Prefecture) after treatment with 7 and 10% NaOH respectively. The lowest gel strength (351 ± 93 cm–2) was obtained fromG. gracilis from Brazil after treatment with 3% NaOH. The softest gel (66.31 ± 9.63 g mm–2) was isolated fromG. tenuistipitata from China, after treatment with 3% NaOH. The most flexible gel (11.62 ± 0.31 g mm–2 × 102) was obtained fromG. chilensis from Chile after treatment with 3% NaOH.Author for correspondence  相似文献

Biofilms are a natural form of cell immobilization that result from microbial attachment to solid supports. Biofilm reactors with polypropylene composite-supports containing up to 25% (w/w) of various agricultural materials (corn hulls, cellulose, oat hulls, soybean hulls or starch) and nutrients (soybean flour or zein) were used for ethanol production. Pure cultures ofZymomonas mobilis, ATCC 31821 orSaccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 24859 and mixed cultures with either of these ethanol-producing microorganisms and the biofilm-formingStreptomyces viridosporus T7A ATCC 39115 were evaluated. An ethanol productivity of 374g L–1 h–1 (44% yield) was obtained on polypropylene composite-supports of soybean hull-zein-polypropylene by usingZ. mobilis, whereas mixed-culture fermentations withS. viridosporus resulted in ethanol productivity of 147.5 g L–1 h–1 when polypropylene composite-supports of corn starch-soybean flour were used. WithS. cerevisiae, maximum productivity of 40 g L–1 h–1 (47% yield) was obtained on polypropylene composite-supports of soybean hull-soybean flour, whereas mixed-culture fermentation withS. viridosporus resulted in ethanol productivity of 190g L–1 h–1 (35% yield) when polypropylene composite-supports of oat hull-polypropylene were used. The maximum productivities obtained without supports (suspension culture) were 124 g L–1 h–1 and 5 g L–1 h–1 withZ. mobilis andS. cerevisiae, respectively. Therefore, forZ. mobilis andS. cerevisiae, ethanol productivities in biofilm fermentations were three- and eight-fold higher than suspension culture fermentations, respectively. Biofilm formation on the chips was detected by weight change and Gram staining of the support material at the end of the fermentation. The ethanol production rate and concentrations were consistently greater in biofilm reactors than in suspension cultures. This is Journal Paper No. J-16356 of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station, Ames, Iowa. Three estuarine macroalgae (Ulva rotundata,Enteromorpha intestinalis, Gracilariagracilis) of economic potential were cultivated in the laboratory toassess their biofiltering capacities for ammonium in waste effluents from a seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) cultivation tank. The studywasdeveloped to investigate the functioning of N nutrition of the three species.Atlow water flow (< 2 volumes d–1) the three species strippedefficiently the ammonium dissolved in the waste water from the fish tank, withaminimum biofiltering efficiency estimate of 61% in unstarved cultures ofG. gracilis at a water flow of 2 volumesd–1. Maximum velocity for ammonium uptake (89.0 molNH4 + g–1 dry wth–1) was found in U. rotundata, whereas G. gracilis showed the highest affinity for thisnutrient. The net ammonium uptake rate was significantly affected by the waterflow, being greatest at the highest flow assayed (2 volumesd–1). Variations of tissue N and C:N ratios during aflow-through experiment suggested that N was not limiting macroalgal growth. However, when ammonium was supplied at a flow rate of 0.5 volumesd–1, specially in a three-stage design, the marked reductionintissue N and the biomass C:N:P ratios suggested a more general nutrientdeficiency. A significant correlation was found between growth rates and the Nbiomass gained in the cultures. The three-stage design under low water flow(0.5volumes d–1) showed that the highest ammonium uptake rates (upto 80.9 mol NH4 + g–1 dry wtd–1 in U. rotundata) were found inthe first stage, with decreasing rates in the following ones. As a result, lowincrements or even losses of total N biomass in these stages were found, suggesting that ammonium was excreted from the algae. We conclude that thesespecies present a potential ability to biofilter the ammonium dissolved inwastewater from a D. labrax cultivation tank, suggesting thatscaling up the biofiltration designs, future practises using these macroalgaemay be implemented in the local fish farms, resulting in both environmental andeconomical advantages.  相似文献

Two serine carboxypeptidases, MpiCP-1 and MpiCP-2, were purified to homogeneity from Monascus pilosus IFO 4480. MpiCP-1 is a homodimer with a native molecular mass of 125 kDa composed of two identical subunits of 61 kDa, while MpiCP-2 is a high mass homooligomer with a native molecular mass of 2,263 kDa composed of about 38 identical subunits of 59 kDa. This is unique among carboxypeptidases and distinguishes MpiCP-2 as the largest known carboxypeptidase. The two purified enzymes were both acidic glycoproteins. MpiCP-1 has an isoelectric point of 3.7 and a carbohydrate content of 11%, while for MpiCP-2 these values were 4.0 and 33%, respectively. The optimum pH and temperature were around 4.0 and 50°C for MpiCP-1, and 3.5 and 50°C for MpiCP-2. MpiCP-1 was stable over a broad range of pH between 2.0 and 8.0 at 37°C for 1 h, and up to 55°C for 15 min at pH 6.0, but MpiCP-2 was stable in a narrow range of pH between 5.5 and 6.5, and up to 50°C for 15 min at pH 6.0. Phenylmethylsulfonylfluoride strongly inhibited MpiCP-1 and completely inhibited MpiCP-2, suggesting that they are both serine carboxypeptidases. Of the substrates tested, benzyloxycarbonyl-l-tyrosyl-l-glutamic acid (Z-Tyr-Glu) was the best for both enzymes. The Km, Vmax, Kcat and Kcat/Km values of MpiCP-1 for Z-Tyr-Glu at pH 4.0 and 37°C were 1.33 mM, 1.49 mM min–1, 723 s–1 and 545 mM–1 s–1, and those of MpiCP-2 at pH 3.5 and 37°C were 1.55 mM, 1.54 mM min–1, 2,039 s–1 and 1,318 mM–1 s–1, respectively.  相似文献

A traditional method is reported for purification of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC; EC 4.1.1.31) from leaves of Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. with a high yield of 50 %, 135-fold purification, and specific activity of 900 mmol kg–1(protein) s–1. PEPC was purified from light-adapted leaves of A. hypochondriacus, involving 40–60 % ammonium sulphate fractionation, followed by chromatography on columns of DEAE-Sepharose, hydroxylapatite (HAP), and Seralose 6-B. The enzyme appeared as a single band on 10 % SDS-PAGE, with a molecular mass of about 100 kDa. Kinetic studies with purified enzyme confirmed the PEPC to be the light-form of the enzyme. Glycerol generally increased the stability of PEPC. The stability and storage of the purified enzyme was studied at temperatures of 4 °C, –20 °C, and liquid nitrogen. PEPC maintained its activity for up to 3 months upon storage with 50 % (v/v) glycerol in liquid nitrogen.  相似文献

Summary 600,000 seedlings ofAlnus crispa were inoculated with a 111 mixture of theFrankia strains ACN1 AG , AGN1 exo AG and MGP10i. After 3 successive inoculations and screenings, one individual, AC-4, was selected as non-nodulating (Nod) with Frankiae. This selected individual AC-4 (Nod) and two other clones ofA. crispa, AC-2 and AC-5, known for their ability to nodulate (Nod+) and two other clones ofA. crispa, AC-2 and AC-5, known for their ability to nodulate (Nod+) withFrankia werein vitro propagated. The different clones ofA. crispa in culture required different kinds and concentrations of sugar during the in vitro multiplication and rooting stages. Nodulation tests using 7Frankia strains indicated that the clone AC-4 (Nod) was non-nodulating with 6 of the 7Frankia strains tested. One strain,Frankia ANNI, isolated from one unique nodule produced on the mother-plant AC-4, induced 38% of the AC-4 plantlets to nodulate but with a number of nodules 10 to 20 times less than the clones AC-2 (Nod+) and AC-5 (Nod+). Morphological observations of the roots of AC-4 (Nod) indicated that this clone had few and abnormally short root hairs.  相似文献

The biomass production of three common aquatic macrophytes, viz. Azolla pinnata, Eichhornia crassipes andHydrilla verticillata, was high at the prevailing environmental conditions and by the enriched water of River Ganga. The biomass production ofAzolla andEichhornia was positively correlated with the orthophosphate phosphorus and nitrate-nitrogen concentrations of the enriched water. The biomass ofAzolla andHydrilla was positively correlated with the electrical conductivity of the water. The average yield of crude protein was highest in Azolla (8,520 kg.ha–1.yr–1), and somewhat lower inEichhornia (6,520 kg.ha–1.yr–1). The annual biogas production was highest inEichhornia (44,381 litres), and somewhat lower inAzolla (17,186 litres).  相似文献

The suppressor gene,su(s)2, inDrosophila melanogaster restores the production of red and brown eye pigments for some purple and vermilion mutant alleles, respectively. We showed previously that the product of thesu(s)+ allele caused inhibition of the sepiapterin synthase A produced by the purple mutant but did not affect the wild-type enzyme. Suppression was accomplished by removingsu(s)+ from the genome. We now report that the tryptophan oxygenase, produced by suppressible vermilion alleles, is also inhibited by extracts fromsu(s)+ flies. The inhibition of the vermilion enzyme can be reduced or eliminated, respectively, by prior storage of the extract at 4 or –20°C or by boiling, whereas the wild-type enzyme is not affected by extracts ofsu(s)+ flies. Also, when the suppressible vermilion strain is raised on certain diets, brown eye pigment production occurs. This epigenetic suppression was reduced by the presence of an extra copy ofsu(s)+ in the genome. These data support a posttranslational mechanism for regulation of enzyme activity in which the activity of the mutant enzyme is reduced by the product of thesu(s)+ allele. How thesu(s)+ gene product can distinguish between the normal and the mutant forms of these two enzymes is discussed, along with other mechanisms for suppression that are currently under investigation. This work was supported in part by a grant from the KOSEF, Korea Science and Engineering Foundation, and the National Science Foundation under the U.S.-East Asia Cooperative Science Program as well as the Office of Health and Environmental Research, U.S. Department of Energy, under Contract DE-AC05-840R21400 with the Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc.  相似文献

An 8-year study was conducted on the island of Crete in order to identify airborne ascospores and to determine their seasonal pattern. A Burkard 7-day, volumetric spore-trap was continuously operated in the city of Irakleion – located in the center of the island – from 1994 through 2001. Relatively „high” ascospore counts (20 – 48 spores/m 3) were obtained from mid-spring through summer, while the rest of the year exhibited lower activity (8–16 spores/m3). The predominant ascospores identified were those of Leptosphaeria and Chaetomium; their concentrations varied from 1 or 2 spores up to a few dozens of spores/m3. Other spores encountered sporadically were: Ascobolus, Endophragmiella, Didymella, Diatrypaceae, Leptosphaerulina, Massaria, Pleospora, Sporormiella, Xylaria. The mean daily concentration of all identified ascospores was 30/m3 for the entire study period, corresponding to 13.9% of the total fungal load. Ascospores have been recognized as important inhalant allergens and have been implicated as contributing to symptoms of both rhinitis and asthma.  相似文献
