The temperature dependence of C3 photosynthesis may be altered by the growth environment. The effects of long-term growth in elevated CO2 on photosynthesis temperature response have been investigated in wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) grown in controlled chambers with 370 or 700 μmol mol−1 CO2 from sowing through to anthesis. Gas exchange was measured in flag leaves at ear emergence, and the parameters of a biochemical photosynthesis model were determined along with their temperature responses. Elevated CO2 slightly decreased the CO2 compensation point and increased the rate of respiration in the light and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) Vcmax, although the latter effect was reversed at 15°C. With elevated CO2, Jmax decreased in the 15–25°C temperature range and increased at 30 and 35°C. The temperature response (activation energy) of Vcmax and Jmax increased with growth in elevated CO2. CO2 enrichment decreased the ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP)-limited photosynthesis rates at lower temperatures and increased Rubisco- and RuBP-limited rates at higher temperatures. The results show that the photosynthesis temperature response is enhanced by growth in elevated CO2. We conclude that if temperature acclimation and factors such as nutrients or water availability do not modify or negate this enhancement, the effects of future increases in air CO2 on photosynthetic electron transport and Rubisco kinetics may improve the photosynthetic response of wheat to global warming.  相似文献

Photosynthesis response to carbon dioxide concentration can provide data on a number of important parameters related to leaf physiology. The genetic algorithm (GA), which is a robust stochastic evolutionary computational algorithm inspired by both natural selection and natural genetics, is proposed to simultaneously estimate the parameters [including maximum carboxylation rate allowed by ribulose 1·5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) carboxylation rate ( V cmax), potential light-saturated electron transport rate ( J max), triose-phosphate utilization (TPU), leaf dark respiration in the light ( R d) and mesophyll conductance ( g m)] of the photosynthesis models presented by Farquhar, von Caemmerer and Berry, and Ethier and Livingston. The results show that by properly constraining the parameter bounds the GA-based estimate methods can effectively and efficiently obtain globally (or, at least near globally) optimal solutions, which are as good as or better than those obtained by non-linear curve fitting methods used in previous studies. More complicated problems such as taking the g m variation response to CO2 into account can be easily formulated and solved by using GA. The influence of the crossover probability ( P c), mutation probability ( P m), population size and generation on the performance of GA was also investigated.  相似文献

The effect of elevated CO2 and different levels of nitrogen on the partitioning of nitrogen between photosynthesis and a constitutive nitrogen-based secondary metabolite (the cyanogenic glycoside prunasin) was examined in Eucalyptus cladocalyx . Our hypothesis was that the expected increase in photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency of plants grown at elevated CO2 concentrations would lead to an effective reallocation of available nitrogen from photosynthesis to prunasin. Seedlings were grown at two concentrations of CO2 and nitrogen, and the proportion of leaf nitrogen allocated to photosynthesis, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), protein and prunasin compared. Up to 20% of leaf nitrogen was allocated to the cyanogenic glycoside, although this proportion varied with leaf age, position and growth conditions. Leaf prunasin concentration was strongly affected by nitrogen supply, but did not increase, on a dry weight basis, in the leaves from the elevated CO2 treatments. However, the proportion of nitrogen allocated to prunasin increased significantly, in spite of a decreasing pool of leaf nitrogen, in the plants grown at elevated concentrations of CO2. There was less protein in leaves of plants grown at elevated CO2 in both nitrogen treatments, while the concentration of active sites of Rubisco only decreased in plants from the low-nitrogen treatment. These changes in leaf chemistry may have significant implications in terms of the palatability of foliage and defence against herbivores.  相似文献

Although the catalytic activity of Rubisco increases with temperature, the low affinity of the enzyme for CO2 and its dual nature as an oxygenase limit the possible increase in net photosynthesis with temperature. For cotton, comparisons of measured rates of net photosynthesis with predicted rates that take into account limitations imposed by the kinetic properties of Rubisco indicate that direct inhibition of photosynthesis occurs at temperatures higher than about 30°C. Inhibition of photosynthesis by moderate heat stress (i.e. 30–42°C) is generally attributed to reduced rates of RuBP regeneration caused by disruption of electron transport activity, and specifically inactivation of the oxygen evolving enzymes of photosystem II. However, measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence and metabolite levels at air-levels of CO2 indicate that electron transport activity is not limiting at temperatures that inhibit CO2 fixation. Instead, recent evidence shows that inhibition of net photosynthesis correlates with a decrease in the activation state of Rubisco in both C3 and C4 plants and that this decrease in the amount of active Rubisco can fully account for the temperature response of net photosynthesis. Biochemically, the decrease in Rubisco activation can be attributed to: (1) more rapid de-activation of Rubisco caused by a faster rate of dead-end product formation; and (2) slower re-activation of Rubisco by activase. The net result is that as temperature increases activase becomes less effective in keeping Rubisco catalytically competent. In this opinionated review, we discuss how these processes limit photosynthetic performance under moderate heat stress.  相似文献

Plants of Nardus stricta growing near a cold, naturally emitting CO2 spring in Iceland were used to investigate the long-term (> 100 years) effects of elevated [CO2] on photosynthesis, biochemistry, growth and phenology in a northern grassland ecosystem. Comparisons were made between plants growing in an atmosphere naturally enriched with CO2 (≈ 790 μ mol mol–1) near the CO2 spring and plants of the same species growing in adjacent areas exposed to ambient CO2 concentrations (≈360 μ mol mol–1). Nardus stricta growing near the spring exhibited earlier senescence and reductions in photosynthetic capacity (≈25%), Rubisco content (≈26%), Rubisco activity (≈40%), Rubisco activation state (≈23%), chlorophyll content (≈33%) and leaf area index (≈22%) compared with plants growing away from the spring. The potential positive effects of elevated [CO2] on grassland ecosystems in Iceland are likely to be reduced by strong down-regulation in the photosynthetic apparatus of the abundant N. stricta species.  相似文献

The long-term response of Arabidopsis thaliana to increasing CO2 was evaluated in plants grown in 800 μl l−1 CO2 from sowing and maintained, in hydroponics, on three nitrogen supplies: "low,""medium" and "high." The global response to high CO2 and N-supply was evaluated by measuring growth parameters in parallel with photosynthetic activity, leaf carbohydrates, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) messenger RNA and protein, stomatal conductance (gs) and density. CO2 enrichment was found to stimulate biomass production, whatever the N-supply. This stimulation was transient on low N-supply and persisted throughout the whole vegetative growth only in high N-supply. Acclimation on low N–high CO2 was not associated with carbohydrate accumulation or with a strong reduction in Rubisco amount or activity. At high N-supply, growth stimulation by high CO2 was mainly because of the acceleration of leaf production and expansion while other parameters such as specific leaf area, root/shoot ratio and gs appeared to be correlated with total leaf area. Our results thus suggest that, in strictly controlled and stable growing conditions, acclimation of A. thaliana to long-term CO2 enrichment is mostly controlled by growth rate adjustment.  相似文献

Artificial chalk grassland swards were exposed to either ambient air or air enriched to 600 μ mol mol–1 CO2, using free-air CO2 enrichment technology, and subjected to an 8 week simulated grazing regime. After 14 months of treatment, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco) activity ( V c,max) and electron transport mediated ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) regeneration capacity ( J max), estimated from leaf gas exchange, were significantly lower in fully expanded leaves of Anthyllis vulneraria L. (a legume) and Sanguisorba minor Scop. grown in elevated CO2. After a change in source:sink balance brought about by defoliation, photosynthetic capacity was fully restored in A. vulneraria and S. minor, but acclimation continued in the grass Bromopsis erecta (Hudson) Fourr. Changes in net photosynthesis ( P n) with growth at elevated CO2 ranged from a 1·6% reduction in precut leaves of A. vulneraria to a 47·1% stimulation in postcut leaves of S. minor . Stomatal acclimation was observed in leaves of A. vulneraria (reduced stomatal density) and B. erecta (reduced stomatal conductance). The results are discussed in terms of whole-plant resource-use optimization and chalk grassland community competitive interactions at elevated CO2.  相似文献

Chlamydomonas acidophila Negoro is a green algal species abundant in acidic waters (pH 2–3.5), in which inorganic carbon is present only as CO2. Previous studies have shown that aeration with CO2 increased its maximum growth rate, suggesting CO2 limitation under natural conditions. To unravel the underlying physiological mechanisms at high CO2 conditions that enables increased growth, several physiological characteristics from high- and low-CO2-acclimated cells were studied: maximum quantum yield, photosynthetic O2 evolution (Pmax), affinity constant for CO2 by photosynthesis (K0.5,p), a CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM), cellular Rubisco content and the affinity constant of Rubisco for CO2 (K0.5,r). The results show that at high CO2 concentrations, C. acidophila had a higher K0.5,p, Pmax, maximum quantum yield, switched off its CCM and had a lower Rubisco content than at low CO2 conditions. In contrast, the K0.5,r was comparable under high and low CO2 conditions. It is calculated that the higher Pmax can already explain the increased growth rate in a high CO2 environment. From an ecophysiological point of view, the increased maximum growth rate at high CO2 will likely not be realised in the field because of other population regulating factors and should be seen as an acclimation to CO2 and not as proof for a CO2 limitation.  相似文献

A mechanistic model has been used to examine the environmental regulation of photosynthetic gas exchange in moss. The effects of water content on conductance to CO2 and on photosynthetic capacity during desiccation were calculated from the carbon isotope discrimination data of Williams & Flanagan (1996 , Oecologia 108, pp. 38–46) and combined with the biochemical model of Farquhar et al. (1980 , Planta 149, pp. 78–90). The model includes a simple light attenuation function that imparts curvature to the light response curve for net assimilation, enabling the use of physiologically realistic values for the biochemical parameters. Measurements of gas exchange for Sphagnum and Pleurozium were made in an old black spruce ecosystem over a growing season in order to assign values to parameters in the model. The calculated maximum rates of carboxylation by Rubisco ( V max) were 5, 14 and 6 μ mol m–2 s–1 for Sphagnum during the spring, summer and autumn seasons of 1996, respectively. The increase in V max during the summer was consistent with an increased allocation of resources to the photosynthetic apparatus. In contrast, no seasonal variation in V max was observed in Pleurozium with average values of 7, 5 and 7 μ mol m–2 s–1 during the spring, summer and autumn, respectively.  相似文献

We investigated the thermal acclimation of photosynthesis and respiration in black spruce seedlings [ Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.] grown at 22/14 °C [low temperature (LT)] or 30/22 °C [high temperature (HT)] day/night temperatures. Net CO2 assimilation rates ( A net) were greater in LT than in HT seedlings below 30 °C, but were greater in HT seedlings above 30 °C. Dark and day respiration rates were similar between treatments at the respective growth temperatures. When respiration was factored out of the photosynthesis response to temperature, the resulting gross CO2 assimilation rates ( A gross) was lower in HT than in LT seedlings below 30 °C, but was similar above 30 °C. The reduced A gross of HT seedlings was associated with lower needle nitrogen content, lower ribulose 1·5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) maximum carboxylation rates ( V cmax) and lower maximum electron transport rates ( J max). Growth treatment did not affect V cmax :  J max. Modelling of the CO2 response of photosynthesis indicated that LT seedlings at 40 °C might have been limited by heat lability of Rubisco activase, but that in HT seedlings, Rubisco capacity was limiting. In sum, thermal acclimation of A net was largely caused by reduced respiration and lower nitrogen investments in needles from HT seedlings. At 40 °C, photosynthesis in LT seedlings might be limited by Rubisco activase capacity, while in HT seedlings, acclimation removed this limitation.  相似文献

An open-top chamber experiment was carried out to examine the likely effects of elevated atmospheric [CO2] on architectural as well as on physiological characteristics of two poplar clones ( Populus trichocarpa × P. deltoides clone Beaupré and P. deltoides × P. nigra clone Robusta). Crown architectural parameters required as input parameters for a three-dimensional (3D) model of poplar structure, such as branching frequency and position, branch angle, internode length and its distribution pattern, leaf size and orientation, were measured following growth in ambient and elevated [CO2 ] (ambient + 350 μmol mol–1) treated open-top chambers. Based on this information, the light interception and photosynthesis of poplar canopies in different [CO2] treatments were simulated using the 3D poplar tree model and a 3D radiative transfer model at various stages of the growing season. The first year experiments and modelling results showed that the [CO2] enrichment had effects on light intercepting canopy structure as well as on leaf photosynthesis properties. The elevated [CO2] treatment resulted in an increase of leaf area, canopy photosynthetic rate and above-ground biomass production of the two poplar clones studied. However, the structural components responded less than the process components to the [CO2] enrichment. Among the structural components, the increase of LAI contributed the most to the canopy light interception and canopy photosynthesis; the change of other structural aspects as a whole caused by the [CO2] enrichment had little effect on daily canopy light interception and photosynthesis.  相似文献

We developed and applied an ecosystem-scale model that calculated leaf CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, chloroplast CO2 concentration and the carbon isotope composition of carbohydrate formed during photosynthesis separately for sunlit and shaded leaves within multiple canopy layers. The ecosystem photosynthesis model was validated by comparison to leaf-level gas exchange measurements and estimates of ecosystem-scale photosynthesis from eddy covariance measurements made in a coastal Douglas-fir forest on Vancouver Island. A good agreement was also observed between modelled and measured δ 13C values of ecosystem-respired CO2 ( δ R). The modelled δ R values showed strong responses to variation in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), air temperature, vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and available soil moisture in a manner consistent with leaf-level studies of photosynthetic 13C discrimination. Sensitivity tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of (1) changes in the lag between the time of CO2 fixation and the conversion of organic matter back to CO2; (2) shifts in the proportion of autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration; (3) isotope fractionation during respiration; and (4) environmentally induced changes in mesophyll conductance, on modelled δ R values. Our results indicated that δ R is a good proxy for canopy-level C c/ C a and 13C discrimination during photosynthetic gas exchange, and therefore has several applications in ecosystem physiology.  相似文献

The biochemical model of photosynthesis proposed by Farquhar, von Caemmerer and Berry is a CO2 response model based on photosynthetic processes. It hypothesizes that leaf CO2 assimilation rate (A) of C3 plants is decided by the minimum of three biochemical processes: the carboxylation rate supported by ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) regeneration rate supported by electron transport and the triose-phosphate (TP) use rate. Fitting leaf CO2 assimilation rate versus intercellular CO2 concentration (A-Ci) curves with the modified FvCB model could provide several important biochemical parameters, including maximum Rubisco carboxylation rate, maximum rate of electron transport, TP use rate, day respiration rate and mesophyll conductance. The FvCB model has greatly improved our understanding and prediction of plant photosynthetic physiology and its response to environmental changes. In this review, we firstly described the FvCB model, and analysed the characteristics of this model: segmentation and overparameterization. We reviewed the estimation of biochemical parameters which by fitting A-Ci curves with the FvCB model. The biochemical parameters were estimated previously by segmenting subjectively and fitting each limitation state separately, whereas now by segmenting objectively and fitting all limitation simultaneously. In comparison to the previously conventional ordinary least squares (OLS), terativgorithms (eg. Genetic Algorithm, Simulated Annealing Algorithm) based on the modern computer technology are now in common use. However, to further improve the reliability and the precision of the parameters estimation, more studies about Rubisco kinetics parameters and their temperature dependence are needed. In the end, to obtain efficient photosynthetic data for biochemical parameters estimation, we integrated and modified methods concerning the measurement of A-Ci curves according to current knowledge about FvCB model fitting. We expect this review would advance our understanding and application of the FvCB model and A-Ci curves.  相似文献

Plant responses to elevated CO2 can be modified by many environmental factors, but very little attention has been paid to the interaction between CO2 and changes in vapour pressure deficit (VPD). Thirty-day-old alfalfa plants ( Medicago sativa L. cv. Aragón), which were inoculated with Sinorhizobium meliloti 102F78 strain, were grown for 1 month in controlled environment chambers at 25/15°C, 14 h photoperiod, and 600 µmol m−2 s−1 photosynthetic photon flux (PPF), using a factorial combination of CO2 concentration (400 µmol mol−1 or 700 µmol mol−1) and vapour pressure deficit (0.48 kPa or 1.74 kPa, which corresponded to relative humidities of 85% and 45% at 25°C, respectively). Elevated CO2 strongly stimulated plant growth under high VPD conditions, but this beneficial effect was not observed under low VPD. Under low VPD, elevated CO2 also did not enhance plant photosynthesis, and plant water stress was greatest for plants grown at elevated CO2 and low VPD. Moreover, plants grown under elevated CO2 and low VPD had a lower leaf soluble protein and photosynthetic activity (photosynthetic rate and carboxylation efficiency) than plants grown under elevated CO2 and high VPD. Elevated CO2 significantly increased leaf adaxial and abaxial temperatures. Because the effects of elevated CO2 were dependent on vapour pressure deficit, VPD needs to be controlled in experiments studying the effect of elevated CO2 as well as considered in the extrapolations of results to a warmer, high-CO2 world.  相似文献

The effect of long-term water stress on photosynthetic carbon metabolism in Casuarina equisetifolia Forst. & Forst. was analysed by measuring CO2 assimilation, stomatal conductance, the quantum yield of photosystem II ( Φ PSII), enzyme activities, and the levels of photosynthetic intermediates and carbohydrates. CO2 assimilation decreased under water stress while the intercellular CO2 concentration ( C i) as estimated by gas exchange measurements remained high. However, the estimates of C i from measurements of Φ PSII suggest that the decrease in photosynthesis can be explained in terms of stomatal closure. Water stress decreased total stromal fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase activity and did not alter the activities and activation states of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase and NADP-dependent malate dehydrogenase (NADP-MDH). The concentration of photosynthetic metabolites, glucose, fructose and sucrose decreased, whereas starch concentrations increased under drought conditions.  相似文献

Abstract: To study physiological responses of mature forest trees to elevated CO2 after lifetime growth under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations ( p CO2), photosynthesis, Rubisco content, foliar concentrations of soluble sugars and starch, sugar concentrations in transport tissues (phloem and xylem), structural biomass, and lignin in leaves and branches were investigated in 30- to 50-year-old Quercus pubescens and Q. ilex trees grown at two naturally elevated CO2 springs in Italy. Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase content was decreased in Q. pubescens grown under elevated CO2 concentrations, but not in Q. ilex. Photosynthesis was consistently higher in Q. pubescens grown at elevated CO2 as compared with "control" sites, whereas the response in Q. ilex was less pronounced. Stomatal conductance was lower in both species leading to decreased transpiration and increased instantaneous water use efficiency in Q. pubescens. Overall mean sugar + starch concentrations of the leaves were not affected by elevated p CO2, but phloem exudates contained higher concentrations of soluble sugars. This finding suggests increased transport to sinks. Qualitative changes in major carbon-bearing compounds, such as structural biomass and lignins, were only found in bark but not in other tissues. These results support the concept that the maintenance of increased rates of photosynthesis after long-term acclimation to elevated p CO2 provides a means of optimization of water relations under arid climatic conditions but does not cause an increase in aboveground carbon sequestration per unit of tissue in Mediterranean oak species.  相似文献

Dactylis glomerata was grown hydroponically in a controlled environment at ambient (360 μl l−1) or elevated (680 μl l−1) CO2 and four concentrations of nitrogen (0.15, 0.6, 1.5 and 6.0 m M NO3), to test the hypothesis that reduction of photosynthetic capacity at elevated [CO2] is dependent on N availability and mediated by a build-up of non-structural carbohydrates. Photosynthetic capacity of the youngest fully expanded leaf (leaf 5, 2 days after full expansion) was reduced in CO2-enriched plants at low, but not high N supply and so the stimulation of net photosynthesis by CO2 enhancement was less at low than at high N supply. CO2 enrichment resulted in a decrease in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) content on a leaf area basis at 0.6 and 1.5 m M NO3, but not at 0.15 and 6.0 m M NO3, and had no effect on the total N content of the leaf on an area basis. However, decreases in Rubisco content could be primarily accounted for by a decrease in total N content of leaves, independent of [CO2]. A doubling of the Rubisco content by increasing the N supply beyond 0.6 m M had only a marginal effect on the maximum carboxylation velocity in vivo, suggesting that the fraction of inactive Rubisco increased with increasing N supply. Although CO2-enriched plants accumulated more non-structural carbohydrates in the leaf, the reduction of photosynthetic capacity at low N supply was not mediated simply by a build-up of carbohydrates. In D . glomerata , the photosynthetic capacity was mainly determined by the total N content of the leaf.  相似文献

The effects of elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide and ozone on diurnal patterns of photosynthesis have been investigated in field-grown spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum ). Plants cultivated under realistic agronomic conditions, in open-top chambers, were exposed from emergence to harvest to reciprocal combinations of two carbon dioxide and two ozone treatments: [CO2] at ambient (380 μmol mol−1, seasonal mean) or elevated (692 μmol mol−1) levels, [O3] at ambient (27 nmol mol−1, 7 hr seasonal mean) or elevated (61 nmol mol−1) levels. After anthesis, diurnal measurements were made of flag-leaf gas-exchange and in vitro Rubisco activity and content. Elevated [CO2] resulted in an increase in photoassimilation rate and a loss of excess Rubisco activity. Elevated [O3] caused a loss of Rubisco and a decline in photoassimilation rate late in flag-leaf development. Elevated [CO2] ameliorated O3 damage. The mechanisms of amelioration included a protective stomatal restriction of O3 flux to the mesophyll, and a compensatory effect of increased substrate on photoassimilation and photosynthetic control. However, the degree of protection and compensation appeared to be affected by the natural seasonal and diurnal variations in light, temperature and water status.  相似文献

Single leaf photosynthetic rates and various leaf components of potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) were studied 1–3 days after reciprocally transferring plants between the ambient and elevated growth CO2 treatments. Plants were raised from individual tuber sections in controlled environment chambers at either ambient (36 Pa) or elevated (72 Pa) CO2. One half of the plants in each growth CO2 treatment were transferred to the opposite CO2 treatment 34 days after sowing (DAS). Net photosynthesis (Pn) rates and various leaf components were then measured 34, 35 and 37 DAS at both 36 and 72 Pa CO2. Three-day means of single leaf Pn rates, leaf starch, glucose, initial and total Rubisco activity, Rubisco protein, chlorophyll ( a + b ), chlorophyll ( a/b ), α -amino N, and nitrate levels differed significantly in the continuous ambient and elevated CO2 treatments. Acclimation of single leaf Pn rates was partially to completely reversed 3 days after elevated CO2-grown plants were shifted to ambient CO2, whereas there was little evidence of photosynthetic acclimation 3 days after ambient CO2-grown plants were shifted to elevated CO2. In a four-way comparison of the 36, 72, 36 to 72 (shifted up) and 72 to 36 (shifted down) Pa CO2 treatments 37 DAS, leaf starch, soluble carbohydrates, Rubisco protein and nitrate were the only photosynthetic factors that differed significantly. Simple and multiple regression analyses suggested that negative changes of Pn in response to growth CO2 treatment were most closely correlated with increased leaf starch levels.  相似文献
