Parthenogenesis induced by cytoplasmatically inherited Wolbachia bacteria has been found in a number of arthropod species, mainly Hymenoptera. Previously, two different forms of diploidy restoration have been reported to underlie parthenogenesis induction in Hymenoptera by Wolbachia. Both are a form of gamete duplication, but each differs in their timing. We investigated the cytology of the early embryonic development of a Wolbachia-infected strain of the parasitoid wasp Leptopilina clavipes and compared it with that of an uninfected sexual strain. Both strains have a similar meiosis. In the infected parthenogenetic strain, diploidy is restored by anaphase restitution during the first somatic mitosis, similar to Trichogramma, but not to Muscidifurax. Our results confirm the occurrence of different cytological mechanisms of diploidy restoration associated with parthenogenesis-inducing Wolbachia in the order Hymenoptera. 相似文献

Divergent reproductive interests of males and females can lead to sexually antagonistic coevolution (SAC). In the absence of males, adaptations evolved under SAC are released from selection and expected to deteriorate. In this study, we investigated this prediction using two populations of the parasitoid wasp Leptopilina clavipes, one arrhenotokous and one thelytokous. Thelytokous females were induced to produce sons by curing them of their Wolbachia-infection. We examined whether thelytokous males were less able to inhibit female remating than arrhenotokous males and whether thelytokous females were more susceptible to male-induced longevity reduction than arrhenotokous females. The results showed that females were monandrous, regardless of whether mated with an arrhenotokous or thelytokous male. While ongoing courtship of males reduced female life span, there was no longevity cost of mating for either arrhenotokous or thelytokous females. Our results therefore do not support the idea that adaptations evolved under SAC deteriorate under prolonged female-only selection. 相似文献

To protect its eggs, the endoparasitoid wasp Leptopilina boulardi injects immune suppressive factors into Drosophila melanogaster host larvae. These factors are localized in the female long gland and reservoir. We analyzed the protein content of these tissues and found that it strongly differed between virulent and avirulent parasitoid strains. Four protein bands present in virulent long glands were eluted and their immune suppressive effect was assessed in vivo, allowing demonstrating a major effect of one of these proteins. The corresponding cDNA encodes a predicted 30 kDa subunit containing a Ras homologous GTPase Activating Protein (RhoGAP) domain, suggesting a possible involvement in the regulation of actin cytoskeleton changes. Using Western-blot experiments, we showed that this protein is abundant in virulent female long glands but is undetectable in virulent females deprived of long glands or in long glands from avirulent wasps. Its potential role in modifying the morphology and the adhesive properties of the host lamellocytes, involved in Drosophila cellular immune responses, is discussed. 相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity and genotype-by-environment interactions are usually studied by testing environmental factors separately. However, several environmental factors may vary simultaneously across the geographic range of a species, and thus interact to drive phenotypic and genotypic evolution. Here, we address the question of the interaction between two environmental factors in the case of a koinobiont parasitoid of Drosophila , Leptopilina heterotoma (Hymenoptera: Figitidae). Using two allopatric parasitoid lines, we analysed the joint effect of developmental temperature and host species on two major fitness components (pre-imaginal survival and fecundity) of emerged parasitoids. Our results indicate that both environmental factors strongly interact to shape the parasitoid phenotype. Moreover, complex genotype-by-environment interactions appeared that can even invert the relative fitness of the two parasitoid lines. 相似文献

We have conducted cladistic analyses of the genus Leptopilina , a group of Drosophila parasitoids studied intensively by (behavioural) ecologists. Twenty-three morphological characters were scored in ten Leptopilina and two outgroup species. At the same time, DNA sequences for the second ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) were gathered for eight Leptopilina and one outgroup species. Both data sets yielded phylogenetic trees which were largely compatible. A 'total evidence' analysis resulted in a single tree that provides a relatively robust phylogenetic reconstruction of the group, which may serve as a basis for historically interpreting the distribution of ecological and behavioural traits. 相似文献

One of the foraging decisions facing parasitoids is whetherto accept (superparasitize) or reject hosts that have alreadybeen parasitized. An important distinction is whether the hosthas been parasitized by the female parasitoid herself or bya conspecific. In solitary parasitoids, the pay-off from anegg laid in the latter host type (conspecific superparasitism)is the probability that the second egg wins the competitionfor the host and results in an offspring. The pay-off from anegg laid in the former type (self-superparasitism) increaseswith an increasing probability that another female will superparasitizethe host in the near future. When this probability equals one,self-superparasitism and conspecific superparasitism have thesame payoff. However, conspecific superparasitism will generallyhave a higher pay-off than self-superparasitism. It will thereforebe beneficial for a female parasitoid to be able to distinguishbetween a host she parasitized and one parasitized by a conspecific.The degree of benefit depends on the probability of conspecificsuperparasitism in the near future. Using an optimal diet model,I show that when a parasitoid encounters a patch containinga mixture of unparasitized and already-parasitized hosts, afemale that can distinguish between the two types of parasitizedhosts gains more offspring than a female without this ability.However, when parasitoids search a patch together with conspecifics,it is adaptive to self-superparasitize, and the pay-off fromthis ability may be negligible. It is therefore predicted thatwhen a female parasitoid searches a partially depleted patchalone, it will reject the hosts parasitized by itself more frequentlythan hosts parasitized by conspecifics. In contrast, femaleparasitoids searching together are predicted to accept hoststhat they parasitized themselves much more often. The resultsshow that the solitary parasitoid Leptopilina heterotoma (Hymenoptera:Eucoilidae) is able to distinguish between hosts that it parasitizedand hosts parasitized by conspecifics. The predictions of themodel are met in a second experiment that shows that L. heterotomaself-superparasitizes when the probability of conspecific superparasitismis high. 相似文献

The Charipinae are a major group of hyperparasitoids of Hemiptera. Here, we present the first cladistic analysis of this subfamily's internal relationships, based on 96 morphological characters of adults. The data matrix was analysed using uniformly weighted parsimony. The effects of using alternative weighting schemes were explored by performing additional searches employing implied weights criteria. One of the caveats of implied weights analysis is that it lacks an objective criterion for selecting the value of the concavity function. In the present study, differential weighting was used to explore the sensitivity of our results to the alternative assumptions made in the analysis and to select one of the most parsimonious trees under equal weights, which we regard as being the hypothesis that minimizes the amount of ad hoc assumptions. The validity of the two existing tribes and the monophyly of all the genera of Charipinae were tested, in particular the cosmopolitan and highly species-rich Alloxysta and Phaenoglyphis , which appear repeatedly in ecological and biochemical studies of host–parasitoid associations. The evolution of several major characters and the relationships between genera are discussed. On the basis of the phylogenetic results, we discuss a number of taxonomic issues. A new classification of the subfamily is proposed in which no tribes are maintained, Carvercharips is synonymyzed with Alloxysta , and the creation of a new genus from Nepal is justified. Our analysis points to the need for a world revision of the basal genus Phaenoglyphis , which is shown as paraphyletic. 相似文献

We examined the effect of reproduction on subsequent survival and fecundity of male Drosophila melanogaster by reversing the reproductive status of individuals part-way through life. Reproduction had a much more marked effect on fertility than survival: males with a history of reproduction showed complete sterility at a time when upwards of 80% of their cohort were still alive. Analyses of survival rates alone gave a misleading measure of the impact of ageing. Sterility appeared to be attributable mainly to a reduction in sperm count. Early reproduction caused permanent, irreversible damage to both survival and fecundity, with risk playing an apparently minor role. Individual differences in frailty appeared to be of little consequence for the interpretation of these reversal experiments, although its possible occurrence made definite detection of risk difficult. 相似文献

The influence of egg-laying experience on the response of females of the eucoilid parasitoid,Leptopilina heterotoma, to parasitized and unparasitizedDrosophila melanogaster host larvae was examined under more controlled conditions than those used in past studies. In laboratory assays, we precisely manipulated both the number of eggs laid by females and the kind of larvae (parasitized versus unparasitized) in which the eggs were laid. We found that the tendency to avoid laying eggs in parasitized hosts depended markedly on whether or not eggs had been laid previously, but depended little on whether those eggs had been laid in parasitized or unparasitized hosts. The observed effect of general egg-laying experience on avoidance of parasitized hosts may reflect responses to either changes in the wasp's internal state (perhaps, changes in egg load) or changes in the wasp's neural representation of the external environment (such as those presumed to occur during learning). In light of these results, we offer a tentative reinterpretation of several earlier studies. 相似文献

Sex determining mechanisms are highly diverse. Like all Hymenoptera, the parasitic wasp Nasonia vitripennis reproduces by haplodiploidy: males are haploid and females are diploid. Sex in Nasonia is not determined by complementary alleles at sex loci. Evidence for several alternative models is considered. Recent studies on a polyploid and a gynandromorphic mutant strain point to a maternal product that is balanced against the number of chromosomal complements in the zygote and a parent-specific (imprinting) effect. A new genus and three new species of Figitinae (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) are described from Colombia: Ferpereira Pujade-Villar n. gen., Ferpereira fiorellae Pujade-Villar n. sp., Neralsia levis Pujade-Villar & Petersen-Silva n. sp., and Figites colombiensis Pujade-Villar & Paretas-Martínez n. sp., which is the first species of Figites Latreille from Colombia and the second from South America. Summary We examined morphological and behavioral features of the reproductive biology of the ponerine ant,Streblognathus aethiopicus. Investigation of the ant's ovaries and spermathecae showed that each colony had a single reproductive (= gamergate). Morphologically this individual could not be distinguished from her nestmates, while the only clear-cut behavioural difference between the gamergate and workers was that the former laid eggs. Experimental removal of the gamergate from colonies resulted in the enlargement of the ovaries in some of the workers. This appears to show that the reproductive is able to suppress reproductive activity of her nestmates.

Zusammenfassung Wir untersuchten Aspekte der Morphologie und des Verhaltens der Fortpflanzungsbiologie beiStreblognathus aethiopicus (Unterfamilie Ponerinae). Die Untersuchung der Ovarien und Spermatheken zeigte, daß jede Kolonie über eine einzige Gamergate verfügte. Dieses Individuum konnte morphologisch nicht von seinen Nestgenossen unterschieden werden. Auch im Verhalten kann sie nur durch das Eierlegen erkann werden. Wurde die Gamergate im Experiment aus der Kolonie entfernt, vergrößerten sich bei einigen der Arbeiterinnen die Ovariolen. Although heritability estimates for traits potentially under natural selection are increasingly being reported, their estimation remains a challenge if we are to understand the patterns of adaptive phenotypic change in nature. Given the potentially important role of selection on the early life phenotype, and thereby on future life history events in many fish species, we conducted a common garden experiment, using the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.), with two major aims. The first objective is to determine how the site of origin, the paternal sexual tactic and additive genetic effects influence phenotypic variation of several morphological traits at hatching and emergence. The second aim is to test whether a link exists between phenotypic characteristics early in life and the incidence of male alternative tactics later in life. We found no evidence of a site or paternal effect on any morphological trait at hatching or emergence, suggesting that the spatial phenotypic differences observed in the natural river system from which these fish originated are mainly environmentally driven. However, we do find significant heritabilities and maternal effects for several traits, including body size. No direct evidence was found correlating the incidence of precocious maturation with early life characteristics. We suggest that under good growing conditions, body size and other traits at early developmental stages are not reliable cues for the surpassing of the threshold values associated with male sexual development. 相似文献

A survey was carried out of the birth dates of Red deer calves born in zoological gardens throughout the world in an attempt to assess the effects of latitude on the timing of conception. The results showed that Red deer in the Northern Hemisphere calve at a similar time of the year irrespective of latitude, and that there is no increase in the length of the calving season as the equator is approached; south of the equator, calving is shifted by six months. Many parasitoids use volatiles produced by plants as important cues during their food and host search process. We investigated the attraction of the parasitic wasp Trybliographa rapae Westwood (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) to volatiles emitted from plants infested by the cabbage root fly Delia radicum L. (Diptera: Anthomyiidae), as well as to volatiles from a nectar food plant. Behavioural choice tests showed that male parasitoids were not attracted to any volatiles from plants infested by D. radicum or from nectar plants, while females showed clear attraction to both volatile sources. Young females were more attracted to combined volatiles of host and food plants over those from only the host plant, whereas older females showed no differences in attraction to the two odour sources. This suggests that intercropping attractive flowers with host plants could potentially be used to recruit newly emerged parasitoids from surrounding fields while older parasitoids invest more energy in host location than in additional food search. Volatiles from a whole infested plant were chosen over those emitted from separated above- and below-ground parts from infested plants. It is important to consider the availability of both energy and host resources for parasitoids when designing an eco-compatible management of a vegetable crop system. 相似文献

Anasterias minuta is an oral-brooding sea star and one of the main predators of intertidal benthos in Patagonia, Argentina. The aims of this study were to: (1) assess the temporal pattern of feeding and brooding, (2) evaluate the effect of body size, tidal height and temperature on feeding and brooding, (3) evaluate temporary changes in digestive and sexual organs and (4) investigate the relationships between the predatory and brooding activities. Females do not feed during the brooding period. Spawning proceeded during March. The brooding period was from March to November, with a maximum in May. The population feeding rate varied seasonally, with a maximum in December and a minimum in May. The feeding rate was positively related to water temperature and sea star size; but not with tidal height. An annual cycle exists for pyloric caeca weight in both sexes; lowest values were found during winter, due to brooding female starvation, and a possible decrease in feeding rate of non-brooding females and males. No inverse relationship was found between the pyloric caeca and gonad weights in females, but a lag of 1 month was observed in males, being the maximal pyloric caeca development before the maximum gonad weight, suggesting nutrient translocation. 相似文献

There is a 2.5-fold difference in male wing size between two haplodiploid insect species, Nasonia vitripennis and N. giraulti. The haploidy of males facilitated a full genomic screen for quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting wing size and the detection of epistatic interactions. A QTL analysis of the interspecific wing-size difference revealed QTL with major effects and epistatic interactions among loci affecting the trait. We analyzed 178 hybrid males and initially found two major QTL for wing length, one for wing width, three for a normalized wing-size variable, and five for wing seta density. One QTL for wing width explains 38.1% of the phenotypic variance, and the same QTL explains 22% of the phenotypic variance in normalized wing size. This corresponds to a region previously introgressed from N. giraulti into N. vitripennis that accounts for 44% of the normalized wing-size difference between the species. Significant epistatic interactions were also found that affect wing size and density of setae on the wing. Screening for pairwise epistatic interactions between loci on different linkage groups revealed four additional loci for wing length and four loci for normalized wing size that were not detected in the original QTL analysis. We propose that the evolution of smaller wings in N. vitripennis males is primarily the result of major mutations at few genomic regions and involves epistatic interactions among some loci. 相似文献
