A new nematode species, Paracapillaria epinepheli, is described from the stomach of the marine fish Epinephelus morio (Valenciennes), the red grouper, (Serranidae, Perciformes) from coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico in Yucatan, southeastern Mexico. It is characterised mainly by its small body (body length of male and female 2.73–3.22 mm and 5.94–6.35 mm, respectively), number (31–36) and structure of the stichocytes, length of the spicule (0.180–0.195 mm), structure of the male caudal bursa (considerably reduced), structure and size of the eggs (size 0.057–0.063 × 0.027–0.030 mm), and by their site within the host. It is the second Paracapillaria species known to occur in the marine and estuarine fishes of the Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

Pseudocapillaria lepidocephali n. sp., parasitic in the intestine of the loach Lepidocephalus (Lepidocephalichthys) guntea from the Hooghly estuary at Kalyani, West Bengal, India, is described. The parasite is characterised mainly by its small body size, the structure of the male caudal end (the presence of mediumsized ventro-lateral lobes and the absence of a dorsal membrane), the presence of a non-spinous spicular sheath, the structure of the stichosome (26–34 stichocytes present), and the size and structure of the eggs. This is the first species of the genus Pseudocapillaria described from India and also from the genus Lepidocephalus.  相似文献

A new nematode from the stomach of the estuarine fish Sillaginopsis panijus of West Bengal, India is described. The nematodes are characterised by small body size, the structure of the male tail (the presence of two large dorso-lateral caudal lobes bearing a distinct papilla on each and a pair of large subventral adanal papillae), the structure of the spicule (wider in proximal and distal regions and with smooth surface), the non-spinous spicular sheath, the structure of the stichosome (stichocytes number 25–32 and regularly aligned throughout the length of the oesophagus), the large bell-shaped vulvar appendage, and elongate-oval eggs with a thin wall and protruding polar plugs. A diagnosis of the new genus and a key to the genera of fish capillariids are provided.  相似文献

Goezia moraveci n. sp. is described from light microscope and scanning electron microscope studies of the specimens recovered from the freshwater fish Mastacembelus armatus from West Bengal, India. G. moraveci differs from other species of the genus in having a small body size, the excretory pore posterior to the level of the nerve-ring, a very short, wide intestinal caecum and a long ventricular appendage (ratio 1: 6–15), a different number and arrangement of caudal papillae, and cuticular spines surrounding the bases of the caudal papillae. This represents the first species of the genus from a piscine host in India.  相似文献

Three pelagic larvae [5.1–5.9 mm in head length (80+ to 101+ mm in total length)] of a macrourid fish, Ventrifossa garmani, from Suruga Bay and offshore waters of central Japan are described. The specimens were characterized by a remarkably elongate caudal region (caudal region length >15.6 times head length), the longest known to date among macrourid larvae and juveniles. Other characteristics included a short snout, first dorsal and pelvic fin rays not elongated, external melanophores on most of the body and posteriorly on the anal fin membrane, and six or seven rectangular clusters of internal melanophores laterally on the anterior caudal region.  相似文献

Two species of cucullanid nematodes collected from the intestine of marine fishes off New Caledonia were studied with the use of light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM): Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) bodiani n. sp. from Bodianus perditio (Quoy & Gaimard) (Perciformes: Labridae), characterised mainly by the small size of the body (males and gravid females 2.26–3.13 mm and 2.46–3.32 mm long, respectively), the presence of very long spicules (1.53–1.66 mm in length), the remarkably large seminal vesicle and the arrangement of caudal papillae, is the second known species of Dichelyne Jägerskiöld, 1902 parasitising fishes of the Labridae and the second nominal species of this genus recorded from fishes in New Caledonian waters. Cucullanus hansoni Olsen, 1952, originally described from Hawaii, is now, after 67 years, again reported from its type-host, Sufflamen fraenatum (Latreille) (Tetraodontiformes: Balistidae), from off New Caledonia. The SEM examination of C. hansoni, used in this species for the first time, revealed some new morphological details, such as the presence of a median precloacal cuticular elevation or the shape of deirids and distal tips of spicules, as well as the exact location of caudal papillae and phasmids in the male. This is the seventh species of Cucullanus Müller, 1777 recorded from fishes off New Caledonia.

Two closely related and often confused species of Pseudodiaptomus from the Lobus-species group, P. lobipes and P. binghami are redescribed from various locations along the east coast of India. These species predominately occur in freshwater though they can survive temporary periods of increased salinity. The distinctive features of the species are found on: female caudal ramal setae, female and male urosome 1–2 spinulation patterns, and fifth legs. Breinlia (Breinlia) petauristi sp. n. from the abdominal cavity of the flying squirrel, Petaurista philippensis (Elliot), from Kerala, India, is described. Of the 15 recognized species of the subgenus, B. petauristi most closely resembles B. trichosuri in the body size, length of spicules, and number of caudal papillae. The detailed structure of the spicules is, however, markedly different in the 2 worms. This is the third species of Breinlia to be reported from a host other than an Australian marsupial.  相似文献

The rotifer Synchaeta pectinata dominated gut content of first feeding Mirogrex larvae (7 mm, 10 days age) and was a selected prey of neuston-caught larvae up to 15 mm TL. A negative L-value (linear index of selection) applied to predation on nauplii and copepodites by 7 and 8 mm larvae; nevertheless, caloric intake was dominated by copepods in 8–10 mm larvae. Neuston-caught larvae 13–20 mm TL fed selectively on Cladocera, especially Bosmina, and on the rotifer Asplanchna spp.Growth, estimated from otolith ring counts and from analysis of size distribution data, ranged from 3 to 7 mm mo–1, with higher rates for early spawned larvae. When consumption as estimated from gut content, was compared to amounts of food required for growth, it appeared that the smallest larvae were underfed, while 13–16 mm fish obtained rations close to sufficiency.Rotifer standing stock biomass in Lake Kinneret has decreased in recent years, especially in winter, the spawning period of Mirogrex. Postulated causes are predation by an increasingly large population of Mirogrex larvae, and decrease of external supply. Larval distribution appeared to be linked to S. pectinata abundance; highest densities of both organisms occurred in the area of inflow from the Jordan and Golan streams. Larval food enrichment of inflow water by fish pond drainage might have caused observed increases in Mirogrex stock size since 1960.  相似文献

One new and one known species of the ascaridoid family Anisakidae are reported from marine fishes off the southwestern coast of New Caledonia: Raphidascaris (Ichthyascaris) nemipteri n. sp. from the intestine of the forked-tailed threadfin bream Nemipterus furcosus (Nemipteridae, Perciformes) and Hysterothylacium cenaticum (Bruce & Cannon, 1989) from the intestine of the striped marlin Tetrapturus audax (Istiophoridae, Perciformes). R. nemipteri is characterised mainly by the shape (wider than long) of the lips, the length of the spicules (225–399 μm, which represent 2.7–4.2% of the body length), the number (22–33) of caudal pre-anal papillae, the position of the vulva (at 16–20% of the body length), and the presence of cuticular spines on the tip of the female tail. Specimens of H. cenaticum from New Caledonia generally exhibited smaller body measurements than those originally described from Australian waters; the deirids and eggs are described for the first time. Maricostula Bruce & Cannon, 1989 is considered a junior synonym of Hysterothylacium, to which three species are transferred as H. cenaticum (Bruce & Cannon, 1989) n. comb., H. makairi (Bruce & Cannon, 1989) n. comb. and H. tetrapteri (Bruce & Cannon, 1989) n. comb.  相似文献

The living morphology and infraciliature of a new marine hypotrichous ciliate, Holosticha bradburyae nov. spec., collected from the coastal water off Qingdao (Tsingtao), China, are investigated. This species is characterized by: body size 150–320 × 25–75 m with brownish to dark brown cell colour, ca. 53 adoral membranelles and 1 anteriorly positioned buccal cirrus; 3 frontal, 2 frontoterminal and 20–26 transverse cirri; midventral rows comprising 27-32 pairs of cirri; one conspicuous gap always present between anterior and posterior parts of AZM, and 2–5 distinctly elongated membranelles are always present at the posteriormost end; cortical granules conspicuous, round and flattened with central depression, arranged in about 10 lines on dorsal side; 28–33 irregularly arranged macronuclear nodules; 9–11 complete dorsal kineties; caudal cirri absent.  相似文献

Summary We studied the effect of four ant species on the reproductive fitness (number of fruits produced) of Schomburgkia tibicinis (Orchidaceae), in the coast of Yucatan, Mexico. Ants forage day and night for the nectar produced by the reproductive structures of the orchid. Ant size is: Camponotus planatus (3–4 mm), C. abdominalis (4–6 mm), C. rectangularis (7–9 mm), and Ectatomma tuberculatum (9–12 mm). The results indicate that ant efficiency in disrupting the activities of the main herbivore, (Stethobaris sp./Coleoptera) varies, and that it is apparently related to ant size, three tendencies are clear: (a) lowest fruit production and highest inflorescence damage are significantly associated with the smaller ants and the control; (b) maximum fruit production and minimum inflorescence damage are significantly associated with the larger ant species; and (c) the increase in ant size tends to have a positive effect on the plant's reproductive output (less dead spikes and more matured fruits). We discuss ant effect on the pollination of the orchid, and emphasize that ant presence should not be associated, in general, with benefit to plants.  相似文献

Summary Tylenchorhynchus microconus n.sp. from around roots of Australian acacia in West Bengal, India has females 0.46–0.65 mm long with coarse body annules, 15–18 m long spear with conus less than half its total length and a short conoid tail (c >1.7–2.8) with 10–15 annules and smooth terminus. T. crassicaudatus leviterminalis n.subsp. differs from T. c. crassicaudatus Williams, 1960 in having a small smooth lip region lacking annules. A new hairtail, Trichiurus nickolensis, is described on the basis of ten specimens collected off northwestern Australia, off the Northern Territory, and in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. The new species strongly resembles T. brevis Wang and You in Wang et al., 1992, off Hainan Island, South China Sea, and T. russelli Dutt and Thankam, 1966, off the Waltair Coast, Andhra Pradesh, India, in having the highest point of the supraoccipital crest situated directly above the posterior margin of the eye and a relatively short caudal peduncle. Trichiurus nickolensis differs from those two species in being strongly pigmented on the anterior section of the dorsal fin membrane (vs. slightly pigmented), and having a dorsal head margin that appears concave in lateral view, rises gently from snout tip to above middle of orbit, and then extends more steeply to dorsal fin origin (vs. rising gently from tip of snout to dorsal fin origin). The new species also has a greater number of dorsal fin rays (III, 138–143 vs. III, 127–132 and III, 127–131 in T. brevis and T. russelli, respectively) and total vertebrae (160–166 vs. 147–155 and 149–153), and shorter preanal length (mean 30% TL vs. 33% TL and 35% TL), head length (11% TL vs. 12% TL and 13% TL) and upper jaw length (4% TL vs. 5% TL and 5% TL).  相似文献

The smallest known specimen (20mm standard length: SL) of Triodon macropterus Lesson is described and illustrated. It is easily distinguished from superficially similar tetraodontid and diodontid larvae or early juveniles of comparable size by the following characters: separate premaxillae in conjunction with the fused dentaries; the presence of multicuspid spinoid scales; the jet-black mark in front of the soft dorsal fin; the developing pelvis, which is visible through the distended skin of the belly; and the presence of a number of procurrent caudal fin rays. The small Triodon differs from the adult in possessing a huge head that measures 45% SL (vs. 28.5–32.7% in adult), the absence of the characteristic dewlap with the conspicuous lateral ocellus, and the structure of the scales and nostrils.  相似文献

Lumbriculus variegatus is an oligochaete widely used in sediment toxicity tests. The locomotory behavior of adults from a normal and a clone population was studied in the Multispecies Freshwater Biomonitor? along with growth and reproduction to determine how different sediment types may affect this worm and forced clones during testing. Four different sand size classes were established by sieving: fine (< 1 mm), medium (1 < × < 2 mm), coarse (> 2 mm), and whole sediment. Locomotory activity was highest in fine and then in coarse sediment, while in whole and medium sediment size classes worms grew and reproduced less, and had lower locomotory activity levels. Fine sediment (< 1 mm) should be used as the negative control in L. variegatus whole sediment toxicity tests. A clone population, generated by cutting all worms over six generations, showed lower locomotory activity levels than normal worms. Artificial cloning is not recommended for obtaining additional test organisms.  相似文献

Summary Pagothenia borchgrevinki ranging in size from 63 to 245 mm were captured from beneath sea ice in McMurdo Sound by fishing and diver collection. Changes in ocular morphology with increasing body size were measured, and assessed in relation to ingested prey. Relative eye size was highest among smaller fish (<100mm total length), and declined with increasing fish size. This was accompanied by a decrease in cone density in the retina from a maximum of 14,200 mm–2 in the smallest fish examined (63 mm), to 1000 mm–2 in a 220 mm long fish. Theoretical acuity was lowest among fish at either end of the size range examined (minimum separable angle 40–50) but approximately constant over the remainder of the size range (25–40). Rod density also decreased with increasing body size but rod numbers per unit visual arc were relatively constant, except in the smallest fish, where angular rod density was low. The same prey taxa occurred in fish of all sizes; however, prey items smaller than about 1.5 mm were not taken by fish of any body size.  相似文献

Concentrations of domoic acid (DA), the biotoxin responsible for amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP), exceeding the regulatory limit of 20 μg g−1 have caused restricted harvesting and closures of wild king scallop fisheries. Toxin monitoring programmes have reported significant inter-animal variation in DA concentration between scallops from the same area. For the development of reliable sampling and management protocols an understanding of the magnitude and causes of inter-animal variation in toxin concentration are important. Ten samples were collected from an aquaculture site in Clew Bay, Co. Mayo off the west coast of Ireland between February 2003 and February 2004, each sample comprising 12 scallops of each of the following size groups: small (70–85 mm), medium (85–100 mm), large (100–115 mm) and very large (>115 mm). DA concentration in each hepatopancreas and in composite samples of both gonad and adductor muscle from each size group on each sampling occasion were measured. High inter-animal variability in DA concentration in hepatopancreas was recorded; CVs ranging from 12.5% to 82.5%. One negative correlation (R2 = 0.7079) between DA concentration in hepatopancreas and scallop shell length, three positive but weak correlations (R2 = 0.4536, 0.3459 and 0.4665) and six no correlations were exhibited. Negative correlations were attributed to faster DA uptake by smaller scallops, positive correlations to faster DA depuration by smaller scallops. If only scallops greater than or equal to 100 mm shell length, the minimum commercial size of this species were considered, no correlation occurred on any of the 10 sampling occasions.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships (LWRs) for Badis dibruensis and Lepidocephalichthys arunachalensis, collected from the lower Subansiri River (Brahmaputra basin) in Assam, India from March 2016 to April 2017 using fishing gears namely cast nets (2.5 m, 1 m; 10–15 mm mesh size) and gillnets (30 × 0.9 m; 5–10 mm mesh size), are presented based on seasonal collections. The b values in the LWRs were determined as 2.56 for B. dibruensis and 3.28 for L. arunachalensis.  相似文献

Synopsis Twenty-two samples of sand-dwelling fishes were collected from sublittoral sandy substrata off the Cape Peninsula, South Africa using a novel quantitative technique in which the ichthyocide, rotenone, was introduced beneath 6.25 m2 plastic sheets weighted around the perimeter with chain. A total of 94 fish of eight species and four families were recorded. Of these, four species of the family Clinidae made up 92% of the material. Fish densities varied from 0.10–2.96 fish m–2 (0.17–1.14 g m–2). Distribution patterns amongst the Clinidae were explained by sediment particle size, with all of the newly discovered species, Cancelloxus longior, inhabiting fine sand (median grain size 0.25–0.50 mm), and all Xenopoclinus leprosus, C. elongatus and Pavoclinus smalei occurring in gravel (> 1 mm). Xenopoclinus kochi was found in all sediment types, but was most abundant in coarse substrata. Diets of all four species were similar, consisting chiefly of amphipods and isopods. However, small differences in prey preference were evident. All four species reached sexual maturity at 25–30 mm standard length, were viviparous, exhibited superembryonation and gave birth to live young of approximately 14 mm. Breeding seasonality occurred in all species except P. smalei.  相似文献
