Radioisotope techniques were used to compare photosynthetic CO2 fixation, activities of carboxylating enzymes, and the composition of photosynthates in 42 species of aquatic plants (emergent, floating, and submersed hydrophytes) collected from rivers Sysert' and Iset' in Sverdlovsk oblast (Russia). The submersed leaves, in comparison with the emergent and floating leaves, featured lower rates of potential photosynthesis (by 2.2 mg CO2/(dm2 h) on average), low content of the fraction I protein, and low activity of Rubisco and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC). The averaged activities of Rubisco and PEPC were diminished in submersed leaves by 10 and 1 mg/(dm2 h), respectively. Different hydrophyte groups showed similar composition of assimilates accumulated after 5-min photosynthesis and did not differ in this respect from terrestrial plants. However, the incorporation of 14C into sucrose and starch in submersed leaves (30 and 9% of total labeling, respectively) was lower than in emergent and floating leaves (45 and 15%, respectively). At the same time, the incorporation of 14C into C4 acids (malate and aspartate) was 1.5 times higher in submersed leaves than in other leaf types. Analysis of leaf differentiation, the Rubisco/PEPC activity ratio, the PEPC activity, and the composition of primary photosynthates in the pulse–chase experiments revealed no evidence of the C4 effect in the submersed hydrophytes examined. The adaptation of hydatophytes to specific conditions of an aquatic environment was structurally manifested in the reduction (by a factor of 3–5) in the number of chloroplasts per 1 cm2 leaf area. This small number of chloroplasts was responsible for low photosynthetic rates in submersed leaves, although metabolic activities of individual chloroplasts were similar for all three hydrophyte groups.  相似文献

The photosynthetic carbon fixation pathways and levels of carbon-fixing enzymes of four dominant submersed macrophytes of Lawrence Lake, southern Michigan, were investigated during the main growth season (May to November). All four species (Scirpus subterminalis Torr., Najas flexilis (Willd.) Rostk. and Schmidt, Potamogeton praelongus Wulf., and Myriophyllum heterophyllum Michx.) were C3 plants based on their patterns of 14C pulse-chase incorporation. High levels of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase were also found in these species. These levels, as well as the ribulose 1,5-biphosphate carboxylase/phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase ratio of the leaves, varied throughout the growing season and exhibited highest values in July. No shift in carbon fixation pathways, however, could be detected from July to October. The possible functions of phosphoenolypyruvate carboxylase in these plants, as well as the significance of C3 metabolism in submersed plants of temperate lakes, are delineated.  相似文献

Cassava (Manihot esculenta, Crantz) is an important staple crop for tropical climates worldwide, including drought-prone environments where it is valued for its reliable yield. The extent to which stress tolerance involves regulation of growth and carbon balance aided by remobilization of carbohydrate from various plant parts was investigated. Plants were grown in 1-meter high pots to permit observation of deep rooting while they were subjected to four soil water regimes over a 30-d period. Transpiration declined abruptly in conjunction with leaf ABA accumulation and severe leaf abscission. In water stressed plants, growth of all plant parts decreased substantially; however, a basal rate of leaf growth continued to provide some new leaves, and although growth of fibrous lateral roots was reduced, main root elongation to deeper regions was only modestly decreased by stress. In leaf blades and petioles, sugars were the predominant form of nonstructural carbohydrate and about one third was in starch; these reserves were depleted rapidly during stress. In contrast, stems and storage roots maintained relatively high starch concentrations and contents per organ until final harvest. Stems gradually lost starch and had sufficient reserves to serve as a prolonged source of remobilized carbohydrate during stress. The amount of starch stored in stems represented about 35 % of the reserve carbohydrate in the plant at the onset of water stress (T0), and 6 % of total plant dry mass. We suggest that this pool of carbohydrate reserves is important in sustaining meristems, growing organs, and respiring organs during a prolonged stress and providing reserves for regrowth upon resumed rainfall.  相似文献

Nodulated soybean plants (Glycine max [L.] Merr. cv Ransom) in a growth-chamber study were subjected to a leaf water potential (Ψw) of −2.0 megapascal during vegetative growth. Changes in nonstructural carbohydrate contents of leaves, stems, roots, and nodules, allocation of dry matter among plant parts, in situ specific nodule activity, and in situ canopy apparent photosynthetic rate were measured in stressed and nonstressed plants during a 7-day period following rewatering. Leaf and nodule Ψw also were determined. At the time of maximum stress, concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates had declined in leaves of stressed, relative to nonstressed, plants, and the concentration of nonstructural carbohydrates had increased in stems, roots, and nodules. Sucrose concentrations in roots and nodules of stressed plants were 1.5 and 3 times greater, respectively, than those of nonstressed plants. Within 12 hours after rewatering, leaf and nodule Ψw of stressed plants had returned to values of nonstressed plants. Canopy apparent photosynthesis and specific nodule activity of stressed plants recovered to levels for nonstressed plants within 2 days after rewatering. The elevated sucrose concentrations in roots and nodules of stressed plants also declined rapidly upon rehydration. The increase in sucrose concentration in nodules, as well as the increase of carbohydrates in roots and stems, during water stress and the rapid disappearance upon rewatering indicates that inhibition of carbohydrate utilization within the nodule may be associated with loss of nodule activity. Availability of carbohydrates within the nodules and from photosynthetic activity following rehydration of nodules may mediate the rate of recovery of N2-fixation activity.  相似文献

Cells were isolated by enzymic digestion from a number of aquatic macrophytes and their photosynthetic activities were determined. Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms, Myriophyllum spicatum L. and M. brasiliense Cambess provided photosynthetically-active cells after digestion with commercial pectinase. Cells from emergent leaves of M. brasiliense were approximately 3 times more active than cells from submersed leaves (56.1 vs. 17.4 μmoles CO2 mg?2 Chl h?1). Cells could be isolated from E. crassipes by grinding as well as by digestion, but the former were less active (3.1 vs. 24.2 μmoles CO2 mg Chl h?1). Attempts to isolate cells from Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle or Potamogeton pectinatus L. were not successful.  相似文献

Methane oxidation associated with submersed vascular plants andits effects on diffusive CH4 release from plants wereexamined through a series of laboratory and field incubationexperiments. In laboratory analyses, measured rates of epiphyticoxidation (i.e., oxidation associated with aboveground tissues) rangedfrom 0.3 to 32.9 pmol mm–2 plant tissueh–1 with significant CH4 consumptionassociated with basal (i.e., near sediment) leaves and stems for all sixspecies tested. Basal stem tissue also showed greater oxidation activitythan basal leaves. Oxidation activity for washed roots of threesubmersed species ranged from 0.18 to 7.01 µmolg–1 root ash-free dry mass h–1 withhigher rates associated with two rhizomatous/stoloniferous speciesthan with a non-rhizomatous one. In field incubations of a singlespecies (Myriophyllum exalbescens), intact plants showed netCH4 consumption during the day and net release at night. Whena specific inhibitor of CH4 oxidation was applied (methylfluoride – MF), net daytime release from plants was observed andnighttime flux increased, indicating that diffusive CH4release from submersed plants is significantly curtailed by the activityof epiphytic methanotrophs.  相似文献

Levels of ash, NaOH-soluble protein, lipid, and TCA-soluble carbohydrate were determined tor seven species of the green alga Caulerpa, for both the entire plant and wound plugs produced by cutting the rhizomes or blades. Insoluble carbohydrate was estimated by subtraction. Wound plugs had higher ash levels and a distinctly higher level of total carbohydrate. Both entire plants and wound plugs had low levels of lipid and protein. Carbohydrate is the major component of the wound plug in Caulerpa in contrast to protein reported for Bryopsis.  相似文献

Mentha aquatica L. was grown at different nutrient availabilities in water and in air at 60% RH. The plants were kept at 600 mmol m?3 free CO2 dissolved in water (40 times air equilibrium) and at 30 mmol m?3 CO2 in air to ensure CO2 saturation of growth in both environments. We quantified the transpiration-independent water transport from root to shoot in submerged plants relative to the transpiration stream in emergent plants and tested the importance of transpiration in sustaining nutrient flux and shoot growth. The acropetal water flow was substantial in submerged Mentha aquatica, reaching 14% of the transpiration stream in emergent plants. The transpiration-independent mass flow of water from the roots, measured by means of tritiated water, was diverted to leaves and adventitious shoots in active growth. The plants grew well and at the same rates in water and air, but nutrient fluxes to the shoot were greater in plants grown in air than in those that were submerged when they were rooted in fertile sediments. Restricted O2 supply to the roots of submerged plants may account for the smaller nutrient concentrations, though these exceeded the levels required to saturate growth. In hydroponics, the root medium was aerated and circulated between submerged and emergent plants to minimize differences in medium chemistry, and here the two growth forms behaved similarly and could fully exploit nutrient enrichment. It is concluded that the lack of transpiration from leaf surfaces in a vapour-saturated atmosphere, or under water, is not likely to constrain the transfer of nutrients from root to shoot in herbaceous plants. Nutrient deficiency under these environmental conditions is more likely to derive from restricted development and function of the roots in waterlogged anoxic soils or from low porewater concentrations of nutrients.  相似文献

Decline of submersed macrophytes has occurred in eutrophic lakes worldwide. Little is known about effects of nutrient enrichment on biomechanical properties of submersed macrophytes. In a 30-day experiment, Myriophyllum spicatum was cultured in aquaria containing two types of sediment (mesotrophic clay vs. fertile loam) with contrasting water NH4 + concentrations (0 vs. 3.0 mg L?1 NH4–N). The plant growth, shoot and root morphology, stem biomechanical properties, and stem total nonstructure carbohydrates content (TNC) were examined. The NH4 +-enriched water, particularly combined with the fertile sediment, caused adverse effects on M. spicatum as indicated by reductions in the growth, stem biomechanical properties (tensile force, bending force and structural stiffness), and TNC content. These results indicate that increased sediment fertility and water NH4 +-enrichment made the plant more fragile and vulnerable to hydraulic damage, particularly for the upper stem, implying that M. spicatum was prone to uprooting and fracture by hydraulic force, and the broken fragment from parent shoot of M. spicatum might have low-survival potential due to its low-TNC content. This may be a mechanical aspect for the decline of submersed macrophytes and makes it more difficult to restore submersed vegetation in the eutrophic lakes.  相似文献

We examined how the freely floating macrophyte, Stratiotes aloides L., sampled from a CO2-supersaturated pond, changes leaf morphology, photosynthesis and inorganic carbon acquisition during its different submerged and emerged life stages in order to evaluate whether S. aloides requires consistently supersaturated CO2 conditions to grow and complete its life cycle. Submerged rosettes formed from over-wintering turions had typical traits of submerged plants with high specific leaf area and low chlorophyll a concentrations. Emergent leaf parts of mature, floating specimens had typical terrestrial traits with stomata, low specific leaf area and high chlorophyll a content, while offsets formed vegetatively and basal, submerged parts of mature plants showed traits in between. All submerged leaf types exhibited some ability to use HCO3 but only rosettes formed from turions had efficient HCO3 use. Rosettes also had the highest CO2 affinity and maximum CO2-saturated photosynthesis in water. Half-saturation constants for CO2 (21–74 μM CO2) were for all submerged leaf parts 5–140 times lower than the concentrations of free CO2 in the pond (350–2800 μM CO2). Emergent leaves were less efficient in water but had significantly higher photosynthesis than submerged, mature leaf parts in air, and rates of photosynthesis of emergent leaves in air were three to five times higher than rates of CO2-saturated photosynthesis of the three submerged leaf types in water. Underwater photosynthetic rates estimated at CO2 concentrations corresponding to air equilibrium were not sufficiently high to support any noticeable growth except for rosettes, in which bicarbonate utilization combined with high CO2 affinity resulted in photosynthetic rates corresponding to almost 34% of maximum rates at high free CO2. We conclude that S. aloides requires consistently high CO2-supersaturation to support high growth and to complete its life cycle, and we infer that this requirement explains why S. aloides mainly grows in ponds, ditches and reed zones that are characterized by strong CO2-supersaturation.  相似文献

The submersed macrophyte Vallisneria americana was grown for seven weeks in a greenhouse to test for differences in the ability of three different sediments to support growth stimulation in response to CO2 enrichment at low pH. Plants accumulated 21- to 24-fold greater biomass at 10 × ambient CO2 concentrations than at ambient CO2 on all sediments. At both CO2 levels, plants grown on sediment from an acidified lake accumulated ca. 81%, and those grown on oligotrophic lake sediment ca. 47% as much biomass as plants grown on alkaline lake sediment. Despite striking CO2 and sediment effects on biomass accumulation, there was no significant interaction (using log-transformed data) between CO2 and sediment effects, indicating that all sediments allowed similar proportionate growth responses to CO2 enrichment. Plants grown on the less fertile sediments showed greater relative allocation to horizontal versus vertical growth by producing more rosette-bearing stolons in relation to plant height (leaf length) than plants grown on relatively fertile, alkaline lake sediment. Tissue analysis suggested that sediment effects on Vallisneria growth could be attributed neither to mineral putrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) limitation nor to aluminum toxicity in these low pH treatments. In any case, CO2 availability can be an important regulator of submersed macrophyte growth at low pH on a variety of sediment types, including those from oligotrophic and acidic lakes.  相似文献

Fixation of Dinitrogen-15 Associated with Rice Plants   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3       下载免费PDF全文
Rice plants (IR26 and Latisail) obtained at near heading stage from a wetland field were transferred to water culture and exposed to 15N2 in a gas-tight growth chamber for 7 days to measure N2-fixing activities associated with the rice. The activities measured varied from 6.5 to 11.6 μmol of N2 fixed per hill per day. The outer leaf sheath had about 2.5 times higher N2-fixing activities per unit weight than the root. Slight activities were also found in the basal node and inner leaf sheath. Wrapping basal parts of the stem with aluminum foil did not decrease the activities of N2 fixation in these parts. Thus, the outer leaf sheath as well as the root are N2-fixing sites in rice plants. N2 fixation found in above-ground parts is not due to photoautotrophic organisms. Less than 10% of the fixed nitrogen was translocated from the fixing sites to the leaf blades and the young panicles.  相似文献

The 14C-assay developed by Zelitch to evaluate photorespiration was modified for use in submersed aquatic plants in the laboratory and in situ. Results in laboratory cultures of Najas flexilis suggest that photorespiration occurs but is limited in comparison to terrestrial C3 plants and is related to the rate of diffusion of CO2 from the plant and to the carrying capacity of water for dissolved oxygen.  相似文献

Many notorious invasive plants are clonal, however, little is known about the different roles of clonal integration effects between invasive and native plants. Here, we hypothesize that clonal integration affect growth, photosynthetic performance, biomass allocation and thus competitive ability of invasive and native clonal plants, and invasive clonal plants benefit from clonal integration more than co-occurring native plants in heterogeneous habitats. To test these hypotheses, two stoloniferous clonal plants, Alternanthera philoxeroides (invasive), Jussiaea repens (native) were studied in China. The apical parts of both species were grown either with or without neighboring vegetation and the basal parts without competitors were in nutrient- rich or -poor habitats, with stolon connections were either severed or kept intact. Competition significantly reduced growth and photosynthetic performance of the apical ramets in both species, but not the biomass of neighboring vegetation. Without competition, clonal integration greatly improved the growth and photosynthetic performance of both species, especially when the basal parts were in nutrient-rich habitats. When grown with neighboring vegetation, growth of J. repens and photosynthetic performance of both species were significantly enhanced by clonal integration with the basal parts in both nutrient-rich and -poor habitats, while growth and relative neighbor effect (RNE) of A. philoxeroides were greatly improved by clonal integration only when the basal parts were in nutrient-rich habitats. Moreover, clonal integration increased A. philoxeroides''s biomass allocation to roots without competition, but decreased it with competition, especially when the basal ramets were in nutrient-rich sections. Effects of clonal integration on biomass allocation of J. repens was similar to that of A. philoxeroides but with less significance. These results supported our hypothesis that invasive clonal plants A. philoxeroides benefits from clonal integration more than co-occurring native J. repens, suggesting that the invasiveness of A. philoxeroides may be closely related to clonal integration in heterogeneous environments.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments showed that the submersed macrophyte Myriophyllum verticillatum L. released oxygen to, and substantially increased redox potential of, reduced solutions bathing the roots. This oxidation was light-dependent, and proceeded at rates similar to those reported for other submersed plants, but lower than those reported for bog and emergent plants. During 72-day laboratory incubations, chemical oxidant demand of sediment pore waters increased slowly in the presence of M. verticillatum. However, the plants had no significant effect on sediment organic content. The results provided no evidence that oxidation by roots of M. verticillatum can counter accretion of organic sediment.  相似文献

Myriophyllum heterophyllum Michx. is a rhizomatous submersed aquatic plant that produces a short, emergent floral spike. We hypothesized that lacunar pressures in emergent spikes should be at or near atmospheric pressure and that a mass flow of gases from submersed stems through the rhizome to emergent stems may occur as lacunar O2 concentrations and pressures in submersed stems increase during photosynthesis. We examined the potential for a pressure gradient ([delta]P) to develop along this pathway by measuring diurnal changes in lacunar gas composition and pressure in submersed stems of nonflowering plants and emergent stems of flowering individuals. Methane release from emergent spikes was also monitored during three diurnal cycles to evaluate the hypothesis that the [delta]P is maintained by the release of lacunar gases to the atmosphere. Lacunar O2 concentrations and pressures in submersed stems increased at sunrise and reached maximum levels by midday. Although O2 fluctuated similarly in emergent stems, lacunar pressures remained at or near atmospheric pressure, indicating that a [delta]P is generated between submersed and emergent stems during photosynthesis. Methane release from emergent spikes increased as lacunar pressures increased, indicating that rhizome gases are transported through emergent stems by mass flow and the [delta]P is maintained by venting lacunar gases from emergent spikes. The potential for mass flow in both flowering and nonflowering individuals is discussed.  相似文献

The diurnal variations in volume and in specific weight were determined for green stems and leaves of Crassulacen acid metabolism (CAM) plants. Volume changes were measured by a water displacement method. Diurnal variations occurred in the volume of green CAM tissues. Their volume increased early in the light period reaching a maximum about mid-day, then the volume decreased to a minimum near midnight. The maximum volume increase each day was about 2.7% of the total volume. Control leaves of C3 and C4 plants exhibited reverse diurnal volume changes of 0.2 to 0.4%. The hypothesis is presented and supported that green CAM tissues should exhibit a diurnal increase in volume due to the increase of internal gas pressure from CO2 and O2 when their stomata are closed. Conversely, the volume should decrease when the gas pressure is decreased.

The second hypothesis presented and supported was that the specific weight (milligrams of dry weight per square centimeter of green surface area) of green CAM tissues should increase at night due to the net fixation of CO2. Green CAM tissues increased their specific weight at night in contrast to control C3 and C4 leaves which decreased their specific weight at night. With Kalanchoë daigremontiana leaves, the calculated increase in specific leaf weight at night based on estimates of carbohydrate available for net CO2 fixation was near 6% and the measured increase in specific leaf weight was 6%.

Diurnal measurements of CAM tissue water content were neither coincident nor reciprocal with their diurnal patterns of either volume or specific weight changes.

During the period of most active leaf expansion, the foliar dark respiration rate of soybeans (Glycine max cv Williams), grown for 2 weeks in 1000 microliters CO2 per liter air, was 1.45 milligrams CO2 evolved per hour leaf density thickness, and this was twice the rate displayed by leaves of control plants (350 microliters CO2 per liter air). There was a higher foliar nonstructural carbohydrate level (e.g. sucrose and starch) in the CO2 enriched compared with CO2 normal plants. For example, leaves of enriched plants displayed levels of nonstructural carbohydrate equivalent to 174 milligrams glucose per gram dry weight compared to the 84 milligrams glucose per gram dry weight found in control plant leaves. As the leaves of CO2 enriched plants approached full expansion, both the foliar respiration rate and carbohydrate content of the CO2 enriched leaves decreased until they were equivalent with those same parameters in the leaves of control plants. A strong positive correlation between respiration rate and carbohydrate content was seen in high CO2 adapted plants, but not in the control plants.

Mitochondria, isolated simultaneously from the leaves of CO2 enriched and control plants, showed no difference in NADH or malate-glutamate dependent O2 uptake, and there were no observed differences in the specific activities of NAD+ linked isocitrate dehydrogenase and cytochrome c oxidase. Since the mitochondrial O2 uptake and total enzyme activities were not greater in young enriched leaves, the increase in leaf respiration rate was not caused by metabolic adaptations in the leaf mitochondria as a response to long term CO2 enrichment. It was concluded, that the higher respiration rate in the enriched plant's foliage was attributable, in part, to a higher carbohydrate status.
