The increase in length of Pelvetia canaliculata (L.) Dec. et Thur., Fucus spiralis L., F. vesiculosus L., F. serratus L., and Ascophyllym nodosum (L.) Le Jolis was measured in various concentrations of lead, cadmium, and mercury during a period of 9–10 days. Concentration ranges of the three metals were 45 2600 μg 1, 1.5 1040 μg 1 and 0.9 1250 μg 1, respectively.Significant reductions of growth rate compared with the controls were observed at ? 810 μg 1 of lead, ? 450 μg/l of cadmium, and ? 10 μg/l of mercury, and regressions of growth reduction on log concentration were indicated.Growth was significantly enhanced in Pelvetia canaliculata and Ascophyllum nodosum when exposed to cadmium, and in this case there was a significant regression of growth iincrease on log concentration. The growth of Pelvetia canaliculata was also enhanced at all concentrations of lead.  相似文献

The growth rate of Pelvetia canaliculata (L.) Dec. et Thur., Fucus spiralis L., F. vesiculosus L., F. serratus L., and Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis was measured in six different concentrations of zinc (0.025–14 mg/l) during a period of ten days. No significant growth response was observed at 0.1 mg/l of zinc. A significant reduction of growth during the first two to three days of exposure to 1.4 mg/l or more was followed by no or small further decline. Apices of A. nodosum from localities with different background load of zinc (0.1–0.5 mg/l and <0.01 mg/l) showed no difference in response to 2.6 mg/l of zinc.  相似文献

Apical growth rates of Furcellaria lumbricalis (Huds.) Lamour. and Ahnfeltia plicata (Huds.) Fries (Gigartinales: Rhodophyceae), and Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. (Fucales: Phaeophyceae), were studied in spray culture, applying independent microcomputer systems for control, data-logging, and apical growth measurements. The system functioned with a minimum of maintenance. Sea-water temperature and light seemed to be more important for growth than nutrient supply under the prevailing conditions. Basal shoots (young, undivided parts of the plants close to the holdfast) of Furcellaria lumbricalis had growth rates three times higher than the apices (apical meristem on the distal end of mature plants) from the older parts of the thallus. For Ascophyllum nodosum apical growth rates of basal shoots, divided and undivided apices were similar. Whereas apical growth rate of A. nodosum was normal, the biomass yield was low. A. nodosum cultivated simultaneously in tanks and in continuous spray had similar growth rates. The spray cultivation technique facilitated control of the experimental conditions, and handling of the plants during the experimental work while excluding epiphytes.  相似文献

The effects of small-scale disturbances (80×30-cm plots) of canopy and grazers on intertidal assemblages were investigated in this 4-year experiment on sheltered rocky shores on the Swedish west coast. Canopy disturbances due to ice scouring were mimicked by removal of adult plants of the seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Joli. Density of the main epilithic grazing gastropods, Littorina spp., was lowered by exclosure and handpicking. Based on earlier experiments in other areas, the general hypothesis was that canopy removal and grazer exclosure, alone or in combination, should increase the recruitment of A. nodosum or other fucoid juveniles, and change the structure of the understorey assemblage. There was an effect of canopy removal on the development of this assemblage, lasting for more than 31 months. Both increased and decreased abundances of species were found as short-term effects, but there was also a longer-term effect with increased abundance. Grazer exclosure was only effective in combination with canopy removal, causing a short-term increase in ephemeral green algae. Short-term effects of canopy removal were also the increase in recruitment of Semibalanus balanoides (Linnaeus) and the decrease of the red alga Hildenbrandia rubra (Sommerfelt) Meneghini. Fast recruitment and growth of fucoid species (Fucus serratus L. and F. vesiculosus L.) restored the canopy and conditions of the understorey within 18 months. Thus, the canopy removal changed the physical conditions for the understorey, making it possible for other species to coexist in this community. Surprisingly, no effect of canopy removal or grazer exclusion was found on the recruitment of juvenile A. nodosum, neither by canopy removal nor grazer exclosure. The lack of such effects might be due to the early mortality caused by other grazers (small, mobile crustaceans), or to the low density of periwinkles on these shores. However, despite the patchy and generally low recruitment of A. nodosum juveniles, observations suggested that the cover of A. nodosum in manipulated patches would return to initial levels, either by recruitment or regrowth of small holdfasts and from growth of edge plants.  相似文献

Year-round observations on the condition of intertidal seaweeds growing in situ on the shore, show that the upper limits of the zones characterized by Pelvetia canaliculata (L.) Done et Thur., Fucus spiralis L. and Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. were periodically pruned back by environmental conditions. The uppermost plants of each species showed clear signs of tissue damage 21 to 28 days after a time when drying conditions coincided with neap tides which exposed the plant to aerial conditions for long periods. High air temperatures aggravated the damage, but neither frost nor prolonged rain had any obvious adverse effects. On spring tides the plants were wetted every day and no damage resulted regardless of the weather. These species clearly all reach up to their physiological limits on the shore investigated, but presumably Fucus vesiculosus L. and F. serratus L. do not, for they were never observed to show signs of tissue damage attributable to exposure to air. Transplant experiments did, however, prove that F. serratus cannot survive in the F. spiralis zone and nor can F. spiralis persist in the Pelvetia canaliculata zone.Laboratory experiments also demonstrated that the ability to tolerate desiccation and then to resume photosynthesis and growth when re-submerged was greatest in P. canaliculata, the species found highest on the shore, and was progressively less in species inhabiting successively lower levels.  相似文献

The growth rate of five species of intertidal Fucales (Pelvetia canaliculata (L.) Dec. et Thur., Fucus spiralis L., Fucus vesiculosus L., Fucus serratus L., Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis) was measured at temperatures from 2.5 to 35 °C. An increase in temperature immediately causes a high growth rate, and during the first hour it increases linearly with temperature; at 35 °C it is 20 times the control at 7 °C. This acceleration of growth is based mainly on stored photosynthate. After the first few hours the growth rate decreases rapidly, particularly at the highest temperatures. After 2–3 weeks a temperature optimum below 17.5 °C is indicated. High temperatures, 30–35 °C, were lethal to all species, with a survival time corresponding to their vertical zonation in the natural habitat.  相似文献

During the first day of development, fertilized eggs of fucoid algae generate an embryonic axis and commence rhizoid growth at one pole. Using Fucus distichus (L.) Powell, F. vesiculosus L. and Pelvetia fastigiata (J.Ag.) DeTony we have investigated the role of calcium in axis formation and fixation as well as in tip growth. The intracellular distribution of membrane-associated calcium was visualized with the fluorescent calcium probe chlorotetracycline (CTC). Punctate fluorescence associated with organelle-like structures was found in conjunction with diffuse staining at all developmental stages. This membrane-associated calcium remained uniformly distributed throughout the cortical cytoplasm while the axis was established, but increased in the rhizoid protuberance at germination. In subsequent development, fluorescence was restricted to the cortical cytoplasm at the elongating tip and at sites of crosswall biosynthesis. The requirement for Ca2+ uptake during development was investigated through inhibition studies; influx was impaired with transport antagonists or by removal of extracellular calcium. Both treatments curtailed germination and tip elongation but had little effect on axis polarization. Reductions in external calcium that interfered with elongation also markedly reduced the apical CTC fluorescencence, indicating that calcium uptake and localization are prerequisites for tip growth. This apical Ca2+ is probably involved in the secretory process that sustains tip elongation. By contrast, calcium was not implicated in the generation of an embryonic axis.Abbreviations ASW artificial seawater - CTC chlorotetracycline - DU developmental unit - EGTA erhylene glycol bis(amino-ethyl ether) N,N,N1,N1–tetraacetic acid - NPN N-phenyl-1-napthylamine  相似文献

Two populations of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol., one from Menai Bridge, Wales, other from Trondheim, Norway, were grown in Trondheim under identical conditions. The two populations showed an equal growth response to light (saturation at 100 Wm−2 at a day-length > 18 h). Temperature optima were 17–18°C and 16°C for the Menai Bridge and Trondheim populations, respectively. In Menai Bridge, local apical growth during April–August was about twice that in Trondheim. When the two populations were exposed to identical conditions (natural light, variable irradiances, different daylengths, different temperatures), the Menai Bridge population had about a 40% better growth rate than the Trondheim population, irrespective of treatment. It is concluded that the differences in local growth rates are partly due to environmental conditions and partly to different genetic growth capacities.  相似文献

The settlement patterns of spores of Polysiphonia lanosa (L.) Tandy on Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis and Fucus vesiculosus L. were studied using a flow tank. Settlement sites were defined as ‘sheltered’ or ‘exposed.’ Surface area calculations revealed non-random settlement on A. nodosum, with higher than expected spore frequencies on the thallus and lateral pits and lower than expected frequencies on the vesicles. Settlement of F. vesiculosus was random and significantly lower than on A. nodosum. On the shore, survival of sporelings from September (post-sporulation) to May (pre-sporulation) was highly non-random on both basiphytes. On A. nodosum, lateral pits ('sheltered') showed the highest survival frequency. Here the proportion of surviving sporelings increased over the study period, whereas the proportion on open thallus area ('exposed') decreased. On F. vesiculosus also preferential survival occurred on ‘sheltered’ sites such as vesicle/thallus interfaces and wounds. Between September and May, all P. lanosa sporelings were lost from ‘exposed’ areas (thallus surface and vesicles). Overall, frequencies of surviving sporelings were much greater on A. nodosum than on F. vesiculosus. These results are discussed with reference to basiphyte morphology, epiphyte removal mechanisms and the survival stratagy of P. lanosa.  相似文献

In northwest Europe, sheltered rocky shores are dominated by fucoid canopy algae and barnacles are rare, although the latter are extremely abundant on exposed shores. The supply of the intertidal barnacle Semibalanus balanoides (L.) to sheltered, fucoid dominated rocky shores was investigated to determine the importance of larval supply in limiting the abundance of adults in shelter. Larval supply was measured at two spatial scales, at the scale of shore (100s of metres), by comparing larval concentrations at exposed and sheltered sites, and at a smaller spatial scale (m), by examining the role of fucoid canopies in limiting supply to the substratum. Replicate plankton trawls were carried out above the intertidal zone at high water at two sheltered sites and nearby exposed headlands. The concentration of S. balanoides cyprid larvae was significantly higher at the sheltered sites on two out of three sampling occasions with up to 14 times greater larvae on one occasion than the nearby exposed site. The effect of the macroalgal canopy on supply to the substratum was assessed in two ways: directly, by pumping water from the substratum in areas with and without Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis, and indirectly by measuring cyprid settlement in a canopy-manipulation experiment. Pumped plankton samples from mid tide level showed that the A. nodosum canopy did not form a barrier to larval supply and may have had a positive effect on larval concentrations at the substratum. Cyprid settlement was assessed in the mid shore A. nodosum and low shore Fucus serratus L. zones to areas with canopy algae (but protected from the sweeping effects of macroalgal fronds) and without canopy. Settlement over three consecutive 24-h periods showed a consistent pattern; settlement was consistently lower beneath the F. serratus canopy than in cleared areas, suggesting that this algal species forms a barrier, limiting supply of cyprid larvae to the substratum.  相似文献

Interactions have been studied between juvenile plants of green, brown, and red marine algae and 31 diatom clones isolated from a variety of marine eulittoral habitats. The interactions seemed to be of an individual nature for both juvenile plants and diatoms. Germlings of Ulva lactuca L. mostly showed enhanced growth, often with significant increases in population sizes of the accompanying diatoms. Fucus spiralis L. germlings were mainly unaffected by growth in the presence of the diatom clones, but growth of the diatoms was often stimulated. Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. germlings were little affected, whilst the accompanying diatoms were less noticeably affected than with Fucus spiralis. Germlings of F. vesiculosus L. often showed growth inhibitions in the presence of diatoms, with many diatom populations showing enhanced growth. Similarly, the discoid encrusting sporelings of Chondrus crispus Stackh. showed growth inhibitions where there were measurable interactions, although the accompanying diatoms usually failed to show growth stimulations. The discoid sporelings of Gigartina stellata (Stackh. in With.) Batt. showed high mortalities, usually with marked increases in population sizes of accompanying diatoms.  相似文献

The increase in length of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis was measured in copper concentrations varying from 14–5000 μg/1 sea water. The growth was unaffected by concentrations of 33 μg/1 or less added for a period of 11 days, but at higher concentrations growth was gradually reduced. When the number of days (x) of exposure to a concentration (y) (y > 33 μg/1) is compared with z (the corresponding percentage reduction of growth rate), the data fit the equation z = 0.084 xy up to at least z = 60%.  相似文献

The new growth promoter, N(2-acyl-l,3-indane dione) triethylammonium iodide (L-TEAI) enhanced the elongation of the seedlings of cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub, belonging to familyPapilionaceae). When the two growth regulators, L-TEAI and cycocel were applied together, the cycocel induced inhibition of radicle elongation was reversed, but it failed to reverse the inhibition of hypocotyl elongation.  相似文献

The vertical zonation of the flat periwinkles Littorina obtusata (L.) and L. mariae Sacchi et Rastelli is different, but overlaps. At a sheltered location on the Isle of Cumbrae, Scotland, L. obtusata, although most abundant on Fucus vesiculosus L. and Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. on the midshore, ranged over the entire shore from the Pelvetia zone down to the upper limits of Laminaria. Littorina mariae exhibited a much more restricted distribution being associated predominantly with Fucus serratus L. on the lower shore. In laboratory trials with adult plants, flat periwinkles found fucoid algae both more attractive and more palatable than other seaweeds. Littorina obtusata also preferred the reproductive receptacles of fucoid algae to their vegetative tissue. Tiny germlings of a diversity of seaweeds were readily consumed by L. obtusata. In choice experiments germling Ulva lactuca L. was preferred to adult U. lactuca, whereas adult Fucus serratus was preferred to germling F. serratus. Contrasting foraging behaviours between different species of flat periwinkle are discussed in relation to differences in their radular dentition.  相似文献

The mechanism of the rapid inhibition of hypocotyl elongation by blue light was investigated in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seedlings by measuring the changes in turgor during the response. A special device, based on the resonance frequency principle, was built which permitted simultaneous and continuous measurements of both tissue rigidity (turgor) and growth rate on a single intact hypocotyl. The large decrease in growth rate following blue irradiation was consistently accompanied by a small increase in resonance frequency. This result indicates that blue light inhibits growth by decreasing the yielding properties of the cell walls, resulting in a slight rise in turgor because of the coupling between growth rate and turgor.  相似文献

Morphological features of seedlings were compared between five Nothofagus species from Patagonia: N. antarctica (Forst. F.) Oerst., N. dombeyi (Mirb.) Oerst, N. nervosa (Phil.) Dim. et Mil., N. obliqua (Mirb.) Oerst. and N. pumilio (Poepp. et Endl.) Krasser. Annual shoots of 1- to 3-year-old seedlings collected from natural communities were observed and the distribution of their length and number of internodes analysed. Each seedling produced one shoot each year. Leaves are alternate in all cases except for the cotyledons (which are always opposite) and the first two leaves after the cotyledons (which have, depending on the species, a high or low probability of being opposite to each other). Shoot length and number of internodes depended on the year and on the species concerned. Shoot length was more variable than internode number both within and between species. The probability of shoot apex death after shoot elongation may be high or low depending on the species and the age of the seedling.  相似文献

Mycosphaerella ascophylli Cotton, a fungal endosymbiont in the thallus of the marine brown alga, Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol., was brought into axenic culture. Most of its nutritional requirements proved to be similar to those characteristic of marine saprophytic fungi: growth optimum at pH 7 to 8, good growth only with a high concentration of NaCl, ability to utilize nitrate as a nitrogen source and glucose, galactose and mannose as carbon sources. The fungus was more specifically characterized by a low temperature optimum (20°C, or lower), a requirement for both thiamin and biotin, and inability to metabolize xylose and fructose.  相似文献

The content of extractable polyphenols in the brown algae Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. and Fucus vesiculosus (L.) was measured at ≈28-day intervals for one year. Colorimetric methods based on the Folin-Denis, Brentamine, and vanillin-H2SO4 reactions were used to estimate relative contents of polyphenols, and these values were converted to absolute contents using the gravimetric method introduced earlier. Relatively little error was introduced by variations in the qualitative composition of the extracted polyphloroglucinols. There appeared to be a significant temporal correlation between polyphenol content and the reproductive state of the algae. The content of polyphenols in A. nodosum was at a minimum (≈9–10% of dry matter) during the period of maximum fruit body shedding (late May), and reached a maximum (≈12–14% of dry matter) during the ‘winter season’. In F. vesiculosus, the minimum (≈8–10% of dry matter) was one to two months later, just before the period of maximum fertility, and thereafter rose to a maximum (≈11–13% of dry matter) during the period of sterility. These results furthermore suggest that the bulk of the polyphenols are not readily accessible as reserve components, and indicate that modifications may be needed in the ‘chemical defense’ and ‘waste product’ hypotheses concerning the significance of brown algal polyphenols.  相似文献

Estuarine populations of Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis and Fucus vesiculosus L. var. spiralis Farlow from the Piscataqua River of the Great Bay Estuary System (New Hampshire-Maine) showed their maximum growth during the spring and fall of two consecutive years. The maximum growth rates (in terms of elongation) for Ascophyllum and Fucus were 3.5 and 3.6 cm/month, respectively, during 1973, and 3.2 and 2.3 cm/month in 1974. The average length of whole Fucus fronds showed a trend towards longer plants during the early spring and late summer-fall, while the average weight was significantly greater in the spring and early summer. Ascophyllum showed a distinct reproductive periodicity, with a maximum in March or April of both years; after the spring period of maximum reproduction, the receptacles dehisced simultaneously and the plants were vegetative during the summer. The reproductive periodicity of Fucus was not so distinct as that of Ascophyllum; even so, its maximum reproduction was in April of both years. The level of reproduction for Ascophyllum populations was three times greater in 1974 than in 1973. The reproduction and growth of the two fucoid algae are related to seasonal variations in temperature and light.  相似文献

We have examined growth responses of several species of marine phytoplankton, cultured with and without heavy metal stress, to supplements of polymeric polyphenols from the brown algae Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. and Fucus vesiculosus L. In the absence of additional heavy metals. supplements of up to 4000 μg. 1 of polyphenols had a small effect on initial growth rates for three of these microalgae and had no effect on maximum cell densities for four species. One very common, heavy metal-sensitive diatom, Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cl., showed significantly increasing maximum cell density in the cultures, with increasing addition of polyphenols to the medium. The toxicity of Zn2+ (0.5–2.0 mg·1 1) to cultures of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin was relieved by supplements (100–200 μg·1 1) of the brown algal polyphenols. Exudation of these polyphenols from brown seaweeds may contribute to the natural chelating capacity of inshore sea water.  相似文献
