  • 1.1.|The standard metabolic rates (SMRs) and preferred body temperatures (PBTs) of the tropical cordylid Cordylus jonesi and temperature lacertid Lacerta lilfordi were determined following acclimation to constant environmental temperatures of 20 and 30°C.
  • 2.2.|Although after 5 weeks the SMRs of Cordylus jonesi and Lacerta lilfordi displayed partial compensations of 20.9 and 10.5%, respectively, their PBTs did not alter over this period. Therefore, acclimation does not maintain complete metabolic homeostasis during either the active or inactive phase of the lizard.
  • 3.3.|Cordylus jonesi allowed to thermoregulate behaviourally at their PBT during activity possessed similar SMRs to control animals maintained continually at the same background temperatures, indicating that acclimation state in lizards is determined by the body temperatures experienced while at rest.
  • 4.4.|The particular acclimatory problems of animals exhibiting behavioural homeothermy are discussed.

  • 1.Establishing if and how organisms modulate temperature changes is an important component of understanding their thermal biology.
  • 2.We used temperature-sensitive radio-transmitters to monitor heating and cooling rates between 5 and 35 °C of four Crotalus adamanteus in the laboratory.
  • 3.We found no difference between heating and cooling rates in C. adamanteus. Additionally, rates of temperature change mirrored those of a biophysical model, further suggesting a lack of physiological thermoregulation.
  • 4.Our findings contrast previously published studies that demonstrate active temperature control of similarly sized reptiles and demonstrate a need for more investigations of physiological thermoregulation in reptiles.

  • 1.1. Both the small riparian skink Sphenomorphus quoyii and its completely terrestrial relative Ctenotus robustus respond to forced submergence with instantaneous bradycardia.
  • 2.2. The strength of the bradycardia was affected by water temperature and fear. Dives into hot (30°C) water produced weak and erratic bradycardia compared to dives into cold (19.5°C) water. For S. quoyii the strongest bradycardia occurred when submergence took place in water at a lower temperature than the pre-dive body temperature.
  • 3.3. Upon emergence both species of skink exhibited elevated heart rates and breathing rates while heating from 19.5 to 30°C, compared to heating at rest. The increased heart and breathing rates probably act to replenish depleted oxygen stores and remove any lactate. Increased heart and ventilation rates are not indicators of physiological thermoregulation in this case.
  • 4.4. Both lizard species exhibited higher heart rates and ventilation frequencies during heating than cooling.
  • 5.5. Compared to its terrestrial relative, S. quoyii does not appear to possess any major thermoregulatory, ventilatory or cardiovascular adaptations to diving. However, very small reptiles may be generally preadapted to use the water to avoid predators.

  • 1.Temperature-dependent effects on respiratory behaviour as well as the corresponding temperature-dependent activities of identified neurons within the respiratory network of the pulmonate snail Lymnaea stagnalis were investigated.
  • 2.Lymnaea lung ventilation terminated at low temperatures (under 10 °C) while temperature elevation increased ventilation rates. The respiratory central pattern generator (CPG) functioning was relatively quiescent at temperatures under 12.5±0.44 °C.
  • 3.Identified CPG neurons (RPeD1, VD4, VD1/RPaD2) and the respiratory network motor neurons (Vi- and RPa-cells) were found to exhibit varied temperature-dependent electrophysiological parameters (action potential frequency and amplitude, resting potential value) between cell types.
  • 4.The observed alterations in the electrical activity of the Lymnaea respiratory network neurons underlie the marked changes of respiratory behaviour observed in the intact animal during temperature changes.

  • 1.1. Euglena gracilis SM-ZK (a non-photosynthetic mutant), cultured in Koren-Hutner medium, containing glucose, malate and glutamate as the main nutrients, were incubated anaerobiosis for 24 hr, and then returned to aerobic conditions. Wax esters, which were synthesized from paramylon (the reserved polysaccharide) for ATP generation under anaerobiosis (wax ester fermentation) were promptly degraded immediately after the cells were replenished with sufficient O2. A large part (about 70%) of the decomposed wax esters were converted back to paramylon.
  • 2.2. When cells were fed with [1–14C]acetate or [U-14C]acetate immediately after transfer from anaerobic to aerobic conditions, radioactivity incorporated into paramylon in the cells fed with [U-14C]acetate was about 1.5-times as high as that with [1-14C]acetate, proposing that glyoxylate cycle participates in the conversion from wax esters to paramylon.
  • 3.3. Paramylon synthesis from [1-14C]acetate was considerably activated by anaerobic preincubation of cells for several hours.
  • 4.4. Isocitrate lyase and malate synthase occurred in cells cultured in Koren-Hutner medium, but the activities were obviously lower than those in cells grown on ethanol. These enzymes were not induced by the anaerobic preincubation.

  • 4.Acoustic activity was restricted at 6.7°C Tb range. This is similar to the lower end of the Tb range for singing measured in cicada species that produce sound with a timbal mechanism.

  • 1.The thermal coadaptation hypothesis predicts that (1) ectotherms experiencing a narrow range of body temperatures in the wild will evolve to perform well over a narrow range of body temperatures and that (2) the optimal temperature for performance will be equal to the preferred body temperature of the species.
  • 2.We tested the predictions of the thermal coadaptation hypothesis with black rat snakes (Elaphe obsoleta) and northern water snakes (Nerodia sipedon) because black rat snakes experience lower and more variable body temperatures than northern water snakes at our study site.
  • 3.We measured swimming speed, tongue-flicking speed, and striking speed in black rat snakes, and swimming speed and tongue-flicking speed in northern water snakes.
  • 4.Adult water snakes generally had narrower performance breadths and higher optimum performance temperatures than adult black rat snakes.
  • 5.Performance breadths were the same for swimming, tongue flicking, and striking within adult black rat snakes, but performance optima for these behaviours differed significantly. Performance breadths differed and performance optima were the same for swimming and tongue flicking within adult northern water snakes.
  • 6.The relative swimming performance of neonates of the two species was similar in breadth to that of adults, but the thermal optimum for neonate black rat snakes was higher than that of adults.
  • 7.Overall, our results provided support for the thermal coadaptation hypothesis.

  • 1.1. Unlike common fishes and as its Latin name implies, the upside-down catfish, Synodontis nigriventris, possesses dark ventral skin. Microscopic observation reveals that melanophores are present on both the ventral and the dorsal skin but differ in size and density of distribution.
  • 2.2. The darkness of both sides of the fish changes in accordance with that of the background.
  • 3.3. At night, the fish are very active and the body becomes pale. The change in color is more noticeable in the dorsal than the ventral skin.
  • 4.4. When melatonin was added to the bathing water, the fish became pale and swam restlessly even when they were exposed to the black background.
  • 5.5. It was found that the catfish preferred the black background to the white one.

Studies were conducted in order to determine the combined effects of low environmental pH and temperature on embryonic survival capacity and metabolic rates in the dragonfly, Anax junius Drury. Studies were also conducted to assess the effects of hypoxia on hatching success as well as to investigate the role of hypoxia as a possible physiological triggering mechanism for hatching.
  • 2.2. At water temperatures of 10–30°C, an environmental pH value of 3.0 was extremely limiting and significantly reduced hatching success.
  • 3.3. Over a pH range of 3.0–5.0, a water temperature of 30°C was found to be severely limiting. Over a pH range of 6.0–7.0, hatching success was greater than 80% at test temperatures ranging from 10 to 25°C.
  • 4.4. Embryos of A. junius exhibited a greater tolerance to markedly low environmental pH (3.0) than that previously reported for fish and amphibians, although survival capacity was less than 10%.
  • 5.5. An environmental pH value of 3.0 has a significant detrimental effect on embryonic development. Survivorship and developmental rate increase significantly over a pH range of 4.0–5.0.
  • 6.6. Oxygen consumption rates were lowest for fertilized eggs exposed to a pH of 3.0 at all test temperatures (10–30°C). Metabolic rates increased significantly at pH 4.O.
  • 7.7. Embryos hatch successfully under hypoxic conditions in both aqueous and nonaqueous media. Results suggest that hypoxia acts as a triggering mechanism for hatching in this aquatic insect.

Dummy conspecifics were presented to isolated adults of the cichlid fish Astronotus ocellatus to investigate the functional organization of cichlid social behavior. Body size and 15 dummy-elicited activities were recorded during 15 min sessions and analyzed by principal components analysis (PCA) to reveal their temporal organization. Five principal components explained almost 80% of the variation in dummy-elicited behavior, and these five factors define functional groups for

  • 2.(b) attack,
  • 3.(c) nesting,
  • 4.(d) boldness,
  • 5.(e)distress.
Nest-oriented and attack modal action patterns are not mutually inhibitory during this time frame, and biting does not appear to function exclusively during an attack on a conspecific.   • 1.1. Metabolic rates (ml O2/mg/hr) of three geographically separated populations of the carabid beetle Calathus melanocephalus L. (Finse and Je 10y, Norway and Drenthe, The Netherlands) were measured and compared by ANCOVA.

  • 2.2. An exponential relationship between FOM and temperature after the first week (1010 =1.76) disappeared after the second week.
  • 3.3. The initially high FOM at temperatures of 30 or 36°C and the low FOM at 18 or 12°C changed over 4 weeks to approach the FOM of fish at 24°C.
  • 4.4. This change in the relationship of FOM to temperature from highly dependent to independent appeared to be thermal compensation.
  • 5.5. Heart and liver CCO activities were significantly affected by temperature, with the lowest activity at the approximate optimum temperature for growth, 24°C.
  • 6.6. Highest CCO activities for heart and liver occurred at both the highest and lowest temperatures.
  • 7.7. Among the three tissues, heart CCO activity was generally the highest and most affected by acclimation temperature.
  • 8.8. Muscle tissue had the lowest CCO activity and was unaffected by temperature.
  • 9.9. The high CCO activity at a cold acclimation of temperature 12°C was probably due to thermal compensation and the high activity at 36°C may have been a result of thermal stress.

  • 1.1. Measurements of the rate of nitrogen consumption, total nitrogen and ammonia excretion and nitrogen absorption of bream, Abramis brama L. (body weight range 0.4–519 g wet wt) were made at 10, 15 and 20 C.
  • 2.2. Fish were fed once daily on live zooplankton collected in Lake Balaton and cultured Tubifex sp. at 5–15% of their body weight.
  • 3.3. Fish size and temperature had a combined effect on the rate of total nitrogen excretion. Total nitrogen excretion did not increase proportionally with an increase in consumption.
  • 4.4. On average, 52–80% of the nitrogen consumed with food was excreted by bream.
  • 5.5. The greatest part of total nitrogen excretion was ammonia and its proportion in the total ranged between 53 and 75%.
  • 6.6. Temperature did not have any significant effect on the proportion of excreted ammonia and the rate of excreted total nitrogen was the only factor determining its proportion in the total.
  • 7.7. The rate of nitrogen absorption of bream was surprisingly very high.
