In the three maternal effect lethal mutant strains of D. melanogaster described in this report, the homozygous mutant females produce defective eggs that cannot support normal embryonic development. The embryos from these eggs begin to develop for the first 2 hr after fertilization in an apparently normal way, forming a blastula containing a cluster of pole cells at the posterior end and a layer of syncytial blastoderm nuclei. During the subsequent transition from a syncytial to a cellular blastoderm, cell formation in the blastoderm is either partially or totally blocked. In mutant mat(3)1 no blastoderm cells are formed, indicating that there are separate genetic controls for pole cells and blastoderm cells. The other two mutants form an incomplete cellular blastoderm in which certain regions of the blastoderm remain noncellular. The noncellular region in mutant mat(3)3 is on the posterior-dorsal surface, covering about 30% of the total blastoderm. In mutant mat(3)6 blastoderm cells are formed only at the anterior and posterior ends, separated by a noncellular region that covers about 70% of the total blastoderm. The selective effects on blastoderm cell formation in the three mutants emphasize the importance of components present in the egg before fertilization for the transition from a syncytial to a cellular blastoderm.The genes defective in the three mutants are essential only for oogenesis and not for any other period of development, as indicated by a strict dependence of the lethal phenotypes on the maternal genotypes. Heterozygous embryos from the eggs of homozygous mutant females die, whereas homozygous mutant embryos from the eggs of heterozygous females develop into viable adults.One of the mutants, mat(3)3, has a temperature-sensitive phenotype. Homozygous mat(3)3 females maintained at a restrictive temperature of 29°C show the lethal maternal effect. However, at a permissive temperature of 20°C the females produce viable adult progeny. The temperature-sensitive period in mat(3)3 females occurs during the last 12 hr of oogenesis, consistent with the maternal effect phenotype of the mutant.  相似文献

Reproductive, phenotypic and life-history traits in many animal and plant taxa show geographic variation, indicating spatial variation in selection regimes. Maternal deposition to avian eggs, such as hormones, antibodies and antioxidants, critically affect development of the offspring, with long-lasting effects on the phenotype and fitness. Little is however known about large-scale geographical patterns of variation in maternal deposition to eggs. We studied geographical variation in egg components of a passerine bird, the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca), by collecting samples from 16 populations and measuring egg and yolk mass, albumen lysozyme activity, yolk immunoglobulins, yolk androgens and yolk total carotenoids. We found significant variation among populations in most egg components, but ca. 90% of the variation was among individuals within populations. Population however explained 40% of the variation in carotenoid levels. In contrast to our hypothesis, we found geographical trends only in carotenoids, but not in any of the other egg components. Our results thus suggest high within-population variation and leave little scope for local adaptation and genetic differentiation in deposition of different egg components. The role of these maternally-derived resources in evolutionary change should be further investigated.  相似文献

Localized activation of Src-family protein kinases in the mouse egg   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Recent studies in species that fertilize externally have demonstrated that fertilization triggers localized activation of Src-family protein kinases in the egg cortex. However, the requirement for Src-family kinases in activation of the mammalian egg is different from lower species and the objective of this study was to characterize changes in the distribution and activity of Src-family protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) during zygotic development in the mouse. Immunofluorescence analysis of mouse oocytes and zygotes with an anti-phosphotyrosine antibody revealed that fertilization stimulated accumulation of P-Tyr-containing proteins in the egg cortex and that their abundance was elevated in the region overlying the MII spindle. In addition, the poles of the MII spindle exhibited elevated P-Tyr levels. As polar body extrusion progressed, P-Tyr-containing proteins were especially concentrated in the region of cortex adjacent to the maternal chromatin and the forming polar body. In contrast, P-Tyr labeling of the spindle poles eventually disappeared as meiosis II progressed to anaphase II. In approximately 24% of cases, the fertilizing sperm nucleus was associated with increased P-Tyr labeling in the overlying cortex and oolemma. To determine whether Src-family protein tyrosine kinases could be responsible for the observed changes in the distribution of P-Tyr containing proteins, an antibody to the activated form of Src-family PTKs was used to localize activated Src, Fyn or Yes. Activated Src-family kinases were found to be strongly associated with the meiotic spindle at all stages of meiosis II; however, no concentration of labeling was evident at the egg cortex. The absence of cortical Src-family PTK activity continued until the blastocyst stage when strong cortical activity became evident. At the pronuclear stage, activated Src-family PTKs became concentrated around the pronuclei in close association with the nuclear envelope. This pattern was unique to the earliest stages of development and disappeared by the eight cell stage. Functional studies using chemical inhibitors and a dominant-negative Fyn construct demonstrated that Src-family PTKs play an essential role in completion of meiosis II following fertilization and progression from the pronuclear stage into mitosis. These data suggest that while Src-family PTKs are not required for fertilization-induced calcium oscillations, they do play a critical role in development of the zygote. Furthermore, activation of these kinases in the mouse egg is limited to distinct regions and occurs at specific times after fertilization.  相似文献

In oviparous vertebrates, maternal steroid allocation to eggs can have important fitness consequences for the offspring. However, elevated testosterone levels are not only associated with beneficial postnatal effects, such as enhanced growth and high social status, but may also entail costs by suppressing the immune system. In this study, testosterone levels in eggs of Chinese painted quail (Coturnix chinensis) were experimentally manipulated to evaluate its effects on growth and immunocompetence. Testosterone did not affect embryonic development, body size or growth during the first 20 days. However, elevated testosterone levels during embryonic development were immunosuppressive for chicks with inherently higher growth rate. Adaptive scenarios where only beneficial effects of increased testosterone levels are considered may therefore need to be re-evaluated.  相似文献

Coevolutionary arms races are a powerful force driving evolution, adaptation, and diversification. They can generate phenotypic polymorphisms that render it harder for a coevolving parasite or predator to exploit any one individual of a given species. In birds, egg polymorphisms should be an effective defense against mimetic brood parasites and are extreme in the African tawny-flanked prinia (Prinia subflava) and its parasite, the cuckoo finch (Anomalospiza imberbis). Here we use models of avian visual perception to analyze the appearance of prinia and cuckoo finch eggs from the same location over 40 years. We show that the two interacting populations have experienced rapid changes in egg traits. Egg colors of both species have diversified over time, expanding into avian color space as expected under negative frequency-dependent selection. Egg pattern showed signatures of both frequency-dependent and directional selection in different traits, which appeared to be evolving independently of one another. Host and parasite appear to be closely tracking one another's evolution, since parasites showed closer color mimicry of contemporaneous hosts. This correlational evidence suggests that hosts and parasites are locked in an ongoing arms race in egg appearance, driven by constant change in the selective advantage of different phenotypes, and that coevolutionary arms races can generate remarkably rapid phenotypic change.  相似文献

在国内首次利用光纤光谱仪对鸟卵的颜色进行量化和分析。通过对灰林鵖(Saxicola ferrea)和矛纹草鹛(Babax lanceolatus)2种鸟的卵色300~700 nm的光谱测量,表明这2种鸟除蓝色色度外,二者卵色在亮度、绿色、黄色以及红色色度上均存在显著差异。灰林鵖和矛纹草鹛卵色的可见光反射光谱反射比值呈现很相似的平行关系,拥有共同的高峰和低峰;而其卵色的紫外光部分呈现从差异大到差异小的变化。用主成分分析光谱的反射和形状,结果对于灰林鵖和矛纹草鹛,前3个主成分分别解释了99.9%和99.8%的光谱变量,其中代表鸟卵亮度的第1主成分分别解释了93.7%和89.3%的变量,代表卵色饱和度的第2主成分分别占总变量的5.5%和9.1%。利用光纤光谱仪对鸟卵的颜色进行定量分析,可为鸟类的区系分类、系统进化和行为生态学等方面的研究提供更客观和科学的数据,同时也拓展了新的研究领域和视角。  相似文献

Oocytes explanted from adult ovaries of the arrhenotokous Hymenopteron Pimpla turionellae remain in an inactive state, because development has not been initiated by mechanical deformation during natural oviposition. However, they could be induced to enter development by injecting cleavage energids into the posterior pole. After lag phases of up to 32 h, the implanted nuclei initiated a normal cleavage process, except that the polarity of its progress was reversed. In other oocytes, the injected energids congregated in a ring-shaped region at the egg surface to form a superficial nuclear front, which slowly advanced towards the anterior egg pole, thereby successively stimulating portions of the quiescent ooplasm to take part in development. Up to 41 rapid cell cycles started from that front, each of them with an anaphase wave running backwards into the region already peripherally occupied by nuclei. Thus, the blastoderm was formed extremely metachronously and by rapid obviously biphasic cell cycles, which never occur at the egg surface during normal cleavage. A germ band, however, was only formed under the following conditions: (1) that cleavage did not follow the nuclear front mode, and (2) that ooplasm from the donor's posterior pole was co-injected with the graft nuclei. We conclude that embryonic differentiation requires some of the events which had been omitted in eggs where development failed, especially the exponential increase of the cell cycle length, and the activity of some posterior factor(s) during egg activation.  相似文献
