Marker-loss is a common feature of mark–recapture studies and important as it may bias parameter estimation. A slight alteration in tag-site of double tagged southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina), marked at Marion Island from 1983 to 2005 in an ongoing mark–recapture program, had important consequences for tag-loss. We calculated age-specific tag-retention rates and cumulative tag-retention probabilities using a maximum likelihood model selection approach in the software application TAG_LOSS 3.2.0. Under the tag-loss independence assumption, double tag-loss of inner interdigital webbing tags (IIT; 17 cohorts) remained below 1% in the first 5 yr and increased monotonically as seals aged, with higher tag-loss in males. Lifetime cumulative IIT tag-loss was 11.9% for females and 18.4% for males, and equivalent for all cohorts. Changing the tag-site to the outer interdigital webbing (OIT; 6 cohorts) resulted in increased and cohort-dependent tag-loss, although the variation (mean ± 95% CI) in cumulative tag-loss probabilities never exceeded 5.3% between cohorts at similar age. Although different studies may homogenize techniques, we advocate the importance of data set-specific assessment of tag-loss rates to ensure greatest confidence in population parameters obtained from mark–recapture experiments. Permanent marking should be implemented where feasible.  相似文献

We conducted a series of experiments to discern among the counter-marking, over-marking, and self-advertisement hypotheses for secondary marking in male prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster , and meadow voles, M. pennsylvanicus . Secondary scent marks (those placed in an area that has already been marked by a conspecific) were not significantly greater than initial marks placed on clean substrate (a substrate without any previous scent marks) for either species and thus did not support a counter-marking hypothesis. Similarly, overlapping of initial scent marks with secondary marks occurred less often than expected by chance and did not support an over-marking hypothesis. Secondary marks tended to avoid overlap with scent marks previously deposited by a potential competitor. Our results suggest that secondary scent marking functions to self-advertise by maximizing individual identity and avoiding masking or blending with previous donors. Future studies on secondary marking should be designed to quantify the observed and expected frequency and placement of original and secondary marks to discern among alternative hypotheses for the adaptive significance of secondary marking.  相似文献

Trade-offs among life-history traits are central to evolutionary theory. In quantitative genetic terms, trade-offs may be manifested as negative genetic covariances relative to the direction of selection on phenotypic traits. Although the expression and selection of ecologically important phenotypic variation are fundamentally multivariate phenomena, the in situ quantification of genetic covariances is challenging. Even for life-history traits, where well-developed theory exists with which to relate phenotypic variation to fitness variation, little evidence exists from in situ studies that negative genetic covariances are an important aspect of the genetic architecture of life-history traits. In fact, the majority of reported estimates of genetic covariances among life-history traits are positive. Here we apply theory of the genetics and selection of life histories in organisms with complex life cycles to provide a framework for quantifying the contribution of multivariate genetically based relationships among traits to evolutionary constraint. We use a Bayesian framework to link pedigree-based inference of the genetic basis of variation in life-history traits to evolutionary demography theory regarding how life histories are selected. Our results suggest that genetic covariances may be acting to constrain the evolution of female life-history traits in a wild population of red deer Cervus elaphus: genetic covariances are estimated to reduce the rate of adaptation by about 40%, relative to predicted evolutionary change in the absence of genetic covariances. Furthermore, multivariate phenotypic (rather than genetic) relationships among female life-history traits do not reveal this constraint.  相似文献

Plasmodium mexicanum, a malaria parasite of lizards, exhibits substantial variation among infections in the life-history traits which define its blood-dwelling stages. Such variation in life histories among infections is common in Plasmodium and may influence the ecology and evolution of the parasite's transmission success and virulence. Insight into these issues requires identification of independent traits (some traits may be bound by developmental trade-offs) and the importance of genetic versus host effects producing the variation. We studied 11 life-history traits in 120 induced infections of P. mexicanum in its natural lizard host (20 each from six donor infections). The traits varied among infections and fell into three clusters: rate/peak (rate of increase and peak parasitaemia of asexuals and gametocytes), time (duration of pre-patent period and the infection's growth) and maturity (timing of first gametocytes). Thus, few life-history traits define an infection in the lizard's blood. Donor effects were significant for ten traits and two trait clusters (maturity was the exception) suggesting genetic differences among infections may influence the rate of increase and peak parasitaemia, but not the timing of the first production of gametocytes.  相似文献

Excluding particular species or guilds of grazing gastropods from experimental areas on intertidal rocky shores is a manipulation frequently used by marine ecologists. Manual removals, cages or fences are classical methods, but they usually require large areas or multiple procedural controls to avoid experimental artefacts. In order to minimise some of those constraints, alternative methods have been developed and are increasingly being used. The effects and limitations of these methods are, however, generally assumed and hardly ever tested. The experiment described here was designed to compare the effectiveness of manual removals, copper paint and sticky barriers in excluding intertidal grazing gastropods from experimental areas on a natural sandstone platform in South-eastern Australia. The response of the grazing assemblage was evaluated for individual species and collectively (integrating all species) by direct counts of individuals and from radular marks on wax discs. The observed patterns varied considerably among species. As predicted, barriers of copper paint effectively excluded the limpet Cellana tramoserica, for several weeks, while having no apparent effect on co-occurring species of grazing gastropods. Sticky barriers were also effective in excluding C. tramoserica, but for shorter periods of time. Contrary to expectations, however, sticky barriers were generally incapable of deterring the coiled snails Bembicium nanum and Nerita atramentosa. Barriers of copper paint are, therefore, a cost-effective way to manipulate diversity (densities of individuals, number and composition of species) and function (intensity of grazing) in this type of assemblage. Care must be taken to clarify the underlying mechanisms and to identify adequate procedural controls.  相似文献

The integration of traits into ‘syndromes' has been suggested as a useful framework to advance insights in trait responses to environmental stressors. Yet, how stressors shape the consistency (‘repeatability') of traits and their covariation at the individual level remains debated. We studied how seasonal time constraints shape trait repeatability and integration of life-history, behavioural and physiological traits along a fast–slow continuum, using the ‘pace-of-life syndrome' as a framework. We manipulated the photoperiod during the larval development of the damselfly Ischnura elegans, generating a time-relaxed early, a control, and a time-constrained late group. The photoperiod treatment did not seem to affect the voltinism of the larvae. As predicted, late-period larvae accelerated development and growth, yet this acceleration was no longer detectable for growth and metabolic rate during the final instar, possibly due to costs of the initial life-history acceleration. This warrants caution when inferring a species' pace-of-life based on a specific developmental stage. The late-period larvae were as predicted more active (only during the later stages of the final instar) and bolder than the control larvae, but not different from the early-period larvae. Most studies on time constraints only compared late and control animals, thereby potentially wrongly concluding adaptive responses to time constraints. Activity, boldness and body mass were repeatable, while growth and metabolic rates were not. Notably, repeatabilities did not change under time constraints. There was no support for an overall trait integration in a pace-of-life syndrome, yet activity and boldness covaried positively as expected. Importantly, this ‘behavioural syndrome' was decoupled in the late-period larvae, which might be adaptive to enhance energy acquisition to fuel the accelerated development rate. Our results suggest that besides the predicted plastic acceleration of life-history, plastic changes in behavioural trait integration may also be an important but overlooked adaptive aspect of responding to time constraints.  相似文献

Passive integrated transponders (PIT-tags) have been shown to be a reliable method for individually marking rodents in field studies. The loss rates of PIT-tags vary, depending on the species, from 3.6 to 7.2%. We used PIT-tags to individually mark a population of edible dormice. Due to a relatively high loss rate of transponders in the first year (7.4%) we used a tissue adhesive to seal the punctuation wound in the second year. With this method we could reduce the tag-loss rate to 2.2%. We therefore recommend using a tissue adhesive, which is easy and fast to apply, after injecting a transponder.  相似文献

Many crustaceans are highly exploited fisheries species, but determining the population parameters of these animals via mark-recapture techniques is problematic, primarily due to tag-loss during moulting of the exoskeleton. Recently developed internal elastomer tags may overcome this challenging problem, since they are completely encased in the tissues beneath the exoskeleton. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of internal elastomer tags in a wild population of painted crayfish (Panulirus versicolor) over an 18-month period. Seventy animals were double-tagged in the abdominal musculature, with individuality obtained using different combinations of tag colour and tag location. Forty individuals were recaptured after 6, 12 and (or) 18 months, giving an overall recapture rate of 57%. Annual tag retention was estimated to be 98%, since only one instance of tag-loss was observed, despite numerous episodes of moulting among tagged individuals. The majority of tags (95%) were easily visible, even after 18 months at liberty. Nonetheless, small reductions in tag condition were observed after the first six months (mostly due to fading and [or] fragmentation), but this did not interfere with overall tag readability. Tag condition did not decline in the following 12 months, nor did it vary with gender or tag location. It is concluded that internal elastomer tags are an effective method for marking wild crayfish over long-term periods. Given the durability of elastomer, and the capacity for individual identification of large numbers of animals, such tags may be suitable for commercial-scale fishery applications.  相似文献

Intraspecific studies of selection on multiple traits of a plant's life history provide insight as to how the composite life history of an organism evolves. Current understanding of selection on plant life-history traits is deficient in three important areas: 1) the effects of selection through correlated traits, 2) the effects of selection on a trait throughout the plant's lifetime, and 3) spatial and temporal variation in selection on plant life-history traits among populations and years. This study documents spatial and temporal variation in selection on three life-history and two morphological traits for two natural populations of Chamaecrista fasciculata, a native summer annual. Life-history and morphological traits (date of seedling emergence, size at establishment, size prior to reproduction, date of initial flowering, and date of initial fruit maturation) varied significantly between sites and/or years. Selection on traits varied either spatially, between sites and among transects within one site, or temporally, between years. In addition, life-history traits were phenotypically correlated among themselves and with morphological traits; correlations were generally constant over time and space. Indirect selection caused changes in means and variances in traits not under direct selection, but which were correlated with traits under selection. Selection on date of emergence varied in direction and magnitude among different life-cycle stages, while selection on other traits varied only in magnitude among life stages of the plant. This study documents the complexity of the selective process and the importance of considering multiple life stages and traits when studying the evolution of life-history traits.  相似文献

Over the past 15 years, phylogenetic comparative methods (PCMs) have become standard in the study of life-history evolution. To date, most studies have focused on variation among species or higher taxonomic levels, generally revealing the presence of significant phylogenetic effects as well as residual variation potentially attributable to adaptive evolution. Recently, population-level phylogenetic hypotheses have become available for many species, making it possible to apply PCMs directly to the level at which experiments are typically used to test adaptive hypotheses. In this study, we present the results of PCMs applied to life-history variation among populations of the widespread and well-studied lizard Sceloporus undulatus. Using S. undulatus (which may represent four closely related species) as an example, we explore the benefits of using PCMs at the population level, as well as consider the importance of several thorny methodological problems including but not limited to nonindependence of populations, lack of sufficient variation in traits, and the typically small sample sizes dictated by the difficulty of collecting detailed demographic data. We show that phylogenetic effects on life-history variation among populations of S. undulatus appear to be unimportant, and that several classic trade-offs expected by theory and revealed by many interspecific comparisons are absent. Our results suggest that PCMs applied to variation in life-history traits below the species level may be of limited value, but more studies like ours are needed to draw a general conclusion. Finally, we discuss several outstanding problems that face studies seeking to apply PCMs below the species level.  相似文献

Island and mainland populations of animal species often differ strikingly in life-history traits such as clutch size, egg size, total reproductive effort and body size. However, despite widespread recognition of insular shifts in these life-history traits in birds, mammals and reptiles, there have been no reports of such life-history shifts in amphibians. Furthermore, most studies have focused on one specific life-history trait without explicit consideration of coordinated evolution among these intimately linked life-history traits, and thus the relationships among these traits are poorly studied. Here we provide the first evidence of insular shifts and trade-offs in a coordinated suite of life-history traits for an amphibian species, the pond frog Rana nigromaculata . Life-history data were collected from eight islands in the Zhoushan Archipelago and neighboring mainland China. We found consistent, significant shifts in all life-history traits between mainland and island populations. Island populations had smaller clutch sizes, larger egg sizes, larger female body size and invested less in total reproductive effort than mainland populations. Significant negative relationships were found between egg size and clutch size and between egg size and total reproductive effort among frog populations after controlling for the effects of body size. Therefore, decreased reproductive effort and clutch size, larger egg size and body size in pond frogs on islands were selected through trade-offs as an overall life-history strategy. Our findings contribute to the formation of a broad, repeatable ecological generality for insular shifts in life-history traits across a range of terrestrial vertebrate taxa.  相似文献

Environmental variation can promote differentiation in life-history traits in species of anurans. Increased environmental stress usually results in larger age at sexual maturity, older mean age, longer longevity, slower growth, larger body size, and a shift in reproductive allocation from offspring quantity to quality, and a stronger trade-off between offspring size and number. However, previous studies have suggested that there are inconsistent geographical variations in life-history traits among anuran species in China. Hence, we here review the intraspecific patterns and differences in life-history traits(i.e., egg size, clutch size, testes size, sperm length, age at sexual maturity, longevity, body size and sexual size dimorphism) among different populations within species along geographical gradients for anurans in China in recent years. We also provide future directions for studying difference in sperm performance between longer and shorter sperm within a species through transplant experiments and the relationships between metabolic rate and brain size and life-history.  相似文献

Salmonid fishes aggregate for breeding at spatially defined, suitable habitats. These aggregations may evolve into discrete populations when precise natal homing leads to reproductive isolation, and local regimes of selection lead to adaptation. Population structure is often defined by persistent differences in selectively neutral genetic markers and in mean values of morphological and life-history traits between locations. This approach is limited by the spatial scale at which traits diverge; low levels of reproductively successful straying, combined with similar selective pressures on life-history traits resulting from similar habitat features and environmental conditions, can significantly reduce the power of these discriminatory methods. We compared data on three life-history traits and polymorphism of DNA microsatellites for evidence of population subdivision among sockeye salmon spawning on spatially discrete but physically similar beaches on islands in Iliamna Lake, Alaska. We found small but significant differences in average body length, body depth and age composition between sites as well as significant interactions between site and year. These interactions, reflecting random variation in growth or recruitment among sites, are a powerful tool for discriminating populations with similar mean trait values. These results suggest fine-scale homing to natal sites, but the microsatellite data revealed no evidence of restricted gene flow among sites. There seems to be enough straying among the populations to prevent differentiation at neutral traits but enough homing for them to be functionally distinct.  相似文献

Abstract Recent glaciation covered the full extent of rocky intertidal habitat along the coasts of New England and the Canadian Maritimes. To test whether this glaciation in fact caused wholesale extinction of obligate rocky intertidal invertebrates, and thus required a recolonization from Europe, we compared American and European populations using allelic diversity and techniques adapted from coalescent theory. Mitochondrial DNA sequences were collected from amphi-Atlantic populations of three cold-temperate obligate rocky intertidal species (a barnacle, Semibalanus balanoides , and two gastropods, Nucella lapillus and Littorina obtusata ) and three cold-temperate habitat generalist species (a seastar, Asterias rubens ; a mussel, Mytilus edulis , and an isopod, Idotea balthica ). For many of these species we were able to estimate the lineage-specific mutation rate based on trans-Arctic divergences between Pacific and Atlantic taxa. These data indicate that some obligate rocky intertidal taxa have colonized New England from European populations. However, the patterns of persistence in North America indicate that other life-history traits, including mechanisms of dispersal, may be more important for surviving dramatic environmental and climatic change.  相似文献

A reliable marking technique was needed for a mark–release–recapture experiment with adults of Diabrotica speciosa (Germar). Four marking techniques, acrylic paint (spattered or brushed on the surface of the insect); and fluorescent pigments (dusted on surfaces or mixed with diet to produce an ingested marker), were tested. Fluorescent pigment durability for the dusting and ingested techniques was evaluated for laboratory conditions and under simulated field conditions. The impact of the techniques on beetle survival was also assessed. Both acrylic paint techniques caused mobility problems in the beetles, and neither technique lasted for more than 48 h. Both fluorescent pigment techniques were more reliable, but the dusting technique showed a significantly higher mortality than the control, and duration variations between laboratory and field conditions. Use of fluorescent pigments added to the diet was the most reliable technique. This technique allowed the manipulation of the marking period, and provided reliable timing of marker persistence in the field.  相似文献

We analysed the influence of ecological factors, phylogenetic history and trade-offs between traits on the life-history variation among 10 loricariid species of the middle Paraná River. We measured eight life-history variables and classified the life-history strategies following the equilibrium–periodic–opportunistic (EPO) model. Principal-component analysis of life-history traits segregated species along a gradient from small opportunistic (low fecundity, low parental investment) to large equilibrium (low-medium fecundity, high parental investment) species. A clear periodic strategist was absent in the analysed assemblage. Variation partitioning by canonical phylogenetic ordination analysis showed both a component of variation uniquely explained by phylogenetic history (PH; 32.2%) and a component shared between PH and ecological factors (EF; 37%). The EPO model is a useful tool for predicting correlations among life-history traits and understanding potential demographic responses of species to environmental variation. Life-history patterns observed throughout Loricariidae suggests that this family has diversified across all three endpoint strategies of the EPO model. Our study indicates that evolutionary lineage affiliation at the level of subfamily can be a strong predictor of the life-history strategy used by each species.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of an investigation into whether selection on genetically based differences in the timing or rate of development (heterochrony) can give rise to nonadaptive morphological differences among individual frogs. We used a quantitative-genetics approach to examine the relationships among the life-history characters time to metamorphosis and larval-growth rate and a functionally significant morphological features, relative hind-limb length, in the spring peeper, Hyla crucifer. Time to metamorphosis and growth rate had low heritabilities in our population. Morphological traits had moderate heritabilities. There were positive genetic correlations between the life-history traits and the components of relative hind-limb length but no significant correlations with the shape variable itself. We used field observations of pond-drying time and experimental results of selection on growth rate to simulate the correlated responses of hind-limb shape to four reasonable selection regimes on the life-history traits. We found little evidence to suggest that relative hind-limb length would display much of a correlated response to such selection. The differences in relative hind-limb length seen among closely related species or among populations of a single species that appear to be unrelated to performance differences are not obviously explicable as neutral correlated responses to selection on larval traits.  相似文献

We present a semiparametric likelihood approach to estimating reporting rates and tag-loss rates from the tags returned from capture-recapture studies. Such studies are commonly used to estimate critical population parameters. Tag loss rates are estimated using double-tagged animals, while reporting rates are estimated using information from high-reward tags. A likelihood function is constructed based on the conditional distribution of the type of tag returned (low or high reward, single or double tag), given that a tag has been returned. This involves many sparse 5 x 1 tag-return contingency tables, and choosing a good functional form for the tag loss rate is difficult with such data. We model tag-loss rates using monotone-smoothing splines, and use these nonparametric estimates to diagnose the parametric form of the tag-loss rate. The nonparametric methods can also be used directly to model tag-loss rates.  相似文献

Aims A plant has a limited amount of resources at any time and it allocates them to different structures. In spite of the large number of previous studies on allocation patterns within single species, knowledge of general patterns in species allocation is still very limited. This is because each study was done in different conditions using different methodology, making generalization difficult. We investigate intraspecific above- versus below-ground biomass allocation among individuals across a spectrum of dry-grassland plant species at two different developmental stages and ask whether allocation is age- and species specific, and whether differences among species can be explained by their life-history traits and phylogeny.Methods We collected data on above- and below-ground biomass of seedlings and adult plants of 20 species from a common garden experiment. We analysed data on shoot–root biomass allocation allometrically and studied the relationship between the allometric exponents (slopes on log–log scale), species life-history traits and phylogenetic distances.Important findings We found isometric as well as allometric patterns of biomass allocation in the studied species. Seedlings and adult individuals of more than half of the species differed in their above- versus below-ground biomass allometric exponents. Seedlings and adult individuals of the remaining species differed in their allometric coefficients (intercepts). Annual species generally allocated proportionally more to above- than below-ground biomass as seedlings than as adults, whereas perennial species showed the opposite pattern. Plant life-history traits, such as plant life span, age of first flowering, month in which the species begin flowering and specific leaf area were much more important in explaining differences in shoot–root allometry among species than were phylogenetic relationships. This suggests that allocation patterns vary greatly among closely related species but can be predicted based on species life-history traits.  相似文献

Variation in local environments may lead to variation in the selection pressures and differentiation among local populations even at microgeographic scale. We investigated variation in temperature-induced plasticity in larval life-history traits among populations of an isolated pool frog (Rana lessonae) metapopulation in Central Sweden. Successful breeding of this northern fringe metapopulation is highly dependent on early summer temperature, however, the metapopulation shows very little variation in molecular genetic markers suggesting limited potential for local differentiation. We exposed larvae from three closely-located populations to two temperatures (20 and 25°C) in laboratory to investigate their growth and development responses to temperature variation. In general, larvae exposed to warmer temperature experienced higher survival and metamorphosed faster, but at a smaller size than those at low temperature. We found differences among the populations in both trait mean values and in the plastic responses. Among-family variation within populations was found in growth rate and time to metamorphosis, as well as in plasticity suggesting that these traits have a capacity to evolve. Our results indicate ample phenotypic variation within and among these closely-located populations despite the low molecular genetic variation. The differences in pond temperature characteristics detected in the study in the three localities may suggest that differential selection is acting in the populations. The strong differentiation found in the larval traits implies that understanding the factors that influence the potential of the populations to adapt to environmental changes may be essential for successful conservation strategies.  相似文献
