A new species of sand whiting, Sillago (Sillago) caudicula, is described based on four specimens collected from Oman, the Indian Ocean. It is easily distinguishable from its four known members of the subgenus Sillago by having a smaller head (29.0–30.1% in standard length), 23–24 soft anal fin rays, 35–36 total vertebrae, body depth at the origin of the second dorsal fin slightly deeper than that at the origin of the first dorsal fin, first and second hypurals fused (in adult) or narrowly separated (in young), third and fourth hypurals fused, and 11 dusky midlateral spots on the body.  相似文献

Samples from sheltered nearshore waters in south-western Australia, in which Sillago schomburgkii spends its entire life cycle, have been used to determine the age structure, growth rate, age and length at first sexual maturity, and spawning period of this whiting species. Several S. schomburgkii reached four to seven years in age and one 12+ fish was caught. The respective maximum and asymptotic lengths (L) were 350 and 333 mm for females and 348 and 325 mm for males, while the growth coefficients (K) for females and males were 0.53 and 0.49, respectively. Sexual maturity was attained by both sexes of S. schomburgkii at ca. 200 mm, a length reached at the end of the second year of life. Monthly trends exhibited by gonadosomatic indices, the proportions of mature gonads and the prevalence of advanced oocytes and post-ovulatory follicles demonstrate that S. schomburgkii spawns predominantly from December to February. The presence of yolk vesicle and yolk granule oocytes and post-ovulatory follicles in the same ovaries during the spawning period, indicate that S. schomburgkii is a multiple spawner. The patterns of growth of the five Sillago species, that occur in south-western Australian marine waters, fall into two categories. The first, which consists of S. burrus and S. robusta, has a small L, i.e. < 190, and a high growth coefficient (K), i.e. 1.0, whereas the second, which comprises S. schomburgkii, S. vittata and S. bassensis, attain a larger size, i.e. L > 00 mm, and has a low K, i.e. 0.5. The lengths and ages at maturity of S. schomburgkii, S. bassensis, S. burrus and S. robusta, as well as of S. analis and S. flindersi found elsewhere in Australia, are linearly related to their asymptotic lengths and maximum ages, respectively. The two smallest species, S. burrus and S. robusta, attain maturity at ca. 130 mm. However, the former species, whose juveniles occupy productive nearshore waters, grows rapidly and reaches this length by the end of the first year of life, whereas the latter species, which is restricted to deeper waters, grows more slowly and thus does not attain this length until a year later. Sillagoflindersi, which is slightly larger than S. burrus and S. robusta, migrates out into deeper waters and attains maturity at ca. 170 mm and two years of age. Although S. schomburgkii, S. analis and S. bassensis attain maturity at ca. 200 mm and reach similar lengths, the first two of these species, which remain in nearshore waters and display more rapid growth, reach maturity one year earlier than the last species, which migrates out into deeper and presumably less productive waters. While S. vittata reaches a similar size and likewise migrates out into deep waters, it reaches maturity earlier, i.e. at the end of its first year of life.  相似文献

A member of Sillago japonica satellite DNA contained internal subrepeats in its 174 bp unit. S. Japonica genomic DNA isolated from liver tissue was subjected to bisulfite modification, and the DNA sequences of about 40 bp flanked by both subrepeats were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This protocol, combination of bisulfite reaction and PCR, converts cytosines in the genomic DNA to thymines in the amplified DNA, whereas 5-methylcytosines in the genomic DNA remain as cytosines. Sequence analysis of the amplified DNA fragments revealed that most of the cytosine residues at CpG were methylated in this region.  相似文献

Sillago maculata is endemic to the east coast of Australia where it is harvested by recreational and commercial fishers; however, little is known of the important aspects of its biology and ecology to assist with fisheries management planning. This situation is redressed here by investigating aspects of the reproduction, age and growth of estuarine populations of S. maculata in south-eastern Australia. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) values indicated peak spawning occurred between September and February and that the estimated mean fork length at maturity (L50) was 14.6 cm for males and 15.2 cm for females. Females displayed an asynchronous pattern of oocyte development, with individuals probably spawning multiple times in a spawning season. A validated aging protocol using thin sectioned otoliths was used to estimate the age of fish. The maximum ages for males and females were 9.5 and 12.0 years, respectively. Growth differed between sexes, with males ( L ∞ = 24.04, K  = 0.70, t 0 = −0.09) attaining a smaller maximum length than females ( L ∞ = 25.01, K  = 0.72, t 0 = −0.04). The age composition of gill-net and beach-seine samples mainly consisted of individuals aged 2–4 years, and there was evidence of variable recruitment. The diet, feeding habits and feeding structures of 519 Sillago sihama and 493 S. analis specimens collected from beaches and estuaries in the Townsville region are described. The species are carnivores on a wide range of benthic, epibenthic and planktonic prey. Both undergo size related dietary shifts; S. sihama from predominantly planktonic crustaceans in fish of less than 80 mm t.l . to polychaetes, penaeid and brachyuran crustaceans and molluscs at larger sizes; S. analis from a mixture of small Mesodesma eltanae and amphipods at sizes of less than 80 mm t.l . to predominantly M. eltanae and small quantities of penaeids and brachyuran crabs in larger fish. The dietary shift was not associated with migration from a nursery area.
While the species showed considerable overlap in the types of prey utilized, there were significant differences in the relative importance of shared components in their diets. The major difference was in the relative importance of the bivalve mollusc, M. eltanae. This was the dominant food of S. analis but of secondary importance in S. sihama. Associated with this basic difference in diet was a specialization of the pharyngeal dentition in S. analis to molariform crushing plates and a reduction of the gill rakers to vestigial knobs. In S. sihama , the pharyngeal teeth are sharp and pointed and the gill rakers normal.
The feeding activity of S. analis , but not S. sihama , is limited by the tidal cycle, a factor which may be a form of temporal partitioning.  相似文献

A green spotted Japanese sillago (Sillago japonica) was caught by a fisherman and brought to the laboratory for pathological inspection. The green spots were abundant on the lateral line and more extensively so within the mouth cavity. In both sites, green spots were embedded within the fish flesh and formed 2–3 mm dome-shaped colonies. SEM revealed these colonies to harbor numerous unknown cells with small, surface warts (ornamentations). Molecular analysis showed the cells were Desmodesmus (D. komarekii), a common freshwater coccoid green alga found in ponds and rivers worldwide. It is uncertain how the host fish came to be infected with the alga which was not merely attached externally but embedded within the flesh and inside the mouth cavity. This is the first case of parasitic form of coccoid green algae in marine fish and provides new insights into the variable nature of green algae.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the suitability of cryoprotectant agent (CPA) impregnation protocols for the embryos of Japanese whiting (Sillago japonica), a small-sized, easy-to-rear, and prolific marine fish which may constitute a suitable experimental material for the development of cryopreservation methods for fish embryos. Our immediate goals were to assess the toxicity and permeability of various CPAs to whiting embryos of different developmental stages. The absolute refractory period, relative refractory period, and the duration and magnitude of the supernormal period were measured after incubation of fish nerves with ciguatoxin and other channel modifying compounds, tetrodotoxin, veratridine, verapamil, and lignocaine. In vitro electrophysiological studies were carried out on the lateral line nerve of the whiting, Sillago ciliata Cuvier. Electrophysiological changes in fish nerves after exposure to ciguatoxin (0.3 MU.ml-1) and veratridine (1 x 10(-5) M) are similar to changes that occur in mammalian nerves and include an increase in the absolute refractory period, the relative refractory period, and the magnitude and duration of supernormality. The effects of ciguatoxin (0.3 MU.ml-1) in fish nerves were antagonised by tetrodotoxin (5 x 10(-10) M), verapamil (5 x 10(-7) M), and lignocaine (1 x 10(-5) g/ml-1). The nerves of Sillago ciliata used in this study responded to ciguatoxin and its antagonists in a similar manner to mammalian nerves, suggesting that these teleost nerves have no specific electrophysiological mechanism to cope with this toxin.  相似文献

Microinjection has proven useful for introduction of low-permeability cryoprotective agents (CPAs) into fish eggs or embryos for cryopreservation. In this work, we examined the suitable conditions for single or combined microinjection into the perivitelline space (PS) and the yolk mass (YM) of embryos of the Japanese whiting, an alternative marine fish model for embryo cryopreservation studies. The parameters examined were injection volume, CPA type and concentration, vehicle (diluent), and suitable developmental stage. Somites and tail elongation embryos tolerated single or combined injection with 2.1 and 15.6 nl in the PS and YM, respectively, whereas earlier embryonic stages tolerated only up to 8.2 nl in the YM. The injected solutions diffused rapidly throughout the PS and YM and remained contained within each compartment unless in the case of structural damage caused by injection of larger volumes. Yamamoto solution was marginally better as a vehicle for microinjection of CPAs than fish Ringer and phosphate buffer saline whereas ¼ artificial sea water was clearly unsuitable. Ethylene glycol was well tolerated by embryos in all developmental stages whereas 1, 2-propylene glycol was suitable only for early embryonic stages. Overall, microinjection was efficient in delivering high loads of CPAs inside whiting embryos more swiftly than previously obtained for this species by immersion-based impregnation protocols. Embryos microinjected with CPAs showed a decrease in embryo nucleation temperature and an increase in chilling tolerance. CPA-microinjected embryos will provide valuable materials to optimize the remaining parameters that are critical for successful cryopreservation such as cooling and warming strategies.  相似文献

The histology of the gonads of free and captive summer whiting, Sillago ciliata , were compared to assess the potential of this fish for aquaculture. There were no qualitative differences between the free and captive males: both completed spermatogenesis through to spermiation. The captive females were non-reproductive, reaching only the vitellogenic stage before the eggs were resorbed by atresia.
A reproductive score was devised to assess reproductive potential in the comparison of the two populations. The females in the captive population had lower reproductive potentials, as shown by the score, and started development a month later than the normal free population. The captive males had higher reproductive scores than the free fish but they were also not spawning and, therefore, the higher score indicated that this potential was not realized. The score provides a standard against which experimental results can be compared and subsequently assessed.  相似文献

In the present study, northern whiting fish (Sillago sihama) muscle was hydrolyzed with gastrointestinal enzymes (pepsin, trypsin and α-chymotrypsin) separately and the resulted protein hydrolysates were tested for antioxidant activities using DPPH radical scavenging activity and reducing power assays. The protein hydrolysate obtained from trypsin exhibited highest antioxidant activity. Further, it was fractionated by consecutive chromatography using anion exchange and gel filtration chromatography; the separated fractions were collected and evaluated for antioxidant activity. The results showed that fraction 2 exhibited high chelating activity (73.15 % at 0.5 mg/mL) and best radical scavenging activity for DPPH radical (55.16 % at 0.5 mg/mL), ABTS radical (57.98 % at 50 μg/mL), superoxide radical (39.55 % at 200 μg/mL) and hydroxyl radical (51.33 % at 100 μg/mL). In addition, the active fraction showed strong antioxidant activity in the inhibition of linoleic acid autooxidation (60 % at 0.5 mg/mL) and also it exhibited significant protective effect on DNA damage caused by hydroxyl radicals. The size of the active fraction was found to be <360.2 Da using mass spectroscopy. These results demonstrate that muscle protein hydrolysate from northern whiting fish could be a best alternative to produce natural antioxidant peptides.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to examine the age and size composition, growth, reproductive biology and mortality of Sillago ciliata Cuvier, 1829 in one of the largest estuarine commercial fisheries in south‐eastern Australia. The study also aimed to present a qualitative comparison of latitudinal variations in some of these characteristics along the eastern Australian coastline. The sampled population contained fish aged up to 10 years with a maximum size of 39.2 cm fork length (LF), and was dominated by 1–5 year olds. Sexual divergence in both the age and size structure of the population was recorded. Female S. ciliata grew slightly faster and attained a greater maximum size (L = 33.79 cm LF, = 0.50 year?1 and t0 = ?0.57 years) than males (L = 29.73 cm LF, = 0.49 year?1 and t0 = ?0.67 years). Females also matured at a significantly larger size (19.13 cm) and older age (1.63 years) than males (size: 17.07 cm, age: 1.10 years). Reproductive activity was highest between September and March. There were no differences between males and females in terms of mortality rate; the estimated total population, natural and fishing mortality rates were = 0.64, = 0.42 and = 0.22, respectively. Although these mortality rates suggest that S. ciliata in the Clarence River are relatively resilient to current rates of exploitation, regular monitoring of their commercial and recreational catch as well as their population structure is recommended in order to maintain sustainable fisheries. Potential latitudinal shifts in the spawning period, age structure and growth of S. ciliata along eastern Australia were also revealed.  相似文献

Three experiments were done with sand whiting Sillago ciliata: the first two assessed the short‐term mortality and physiological response of individuals after being mouth hooked and then subjected to rapid changes in salinity, while the third experiment investigated their longer‐term fate after ingesting hooks (independent of salinity changes). In experiment one, 48 tanks containing a single S. ciliata were randomly assigned as either one of three treatments or a control. The fish in treatments one and two were exposed to salinity changes during their angling and subsequent release while those in treatment three were only subjected to angling and air exposure. Control fish remained untouched. Fish were then monitored for up to 6 days for mortalities before blood samples were taken to determine concentrations of plasma cortisol and glucose. Blood samples were also taken from five wild‐caught fish to provide baseline estimates of the above variables. None of the treatment or control fish died over the 6 days, and there were no significant differences in blood cortisol or glucose between treatment, control and wild fish. In experiment two, 102 S. ciliata and 52 experimental tanks were used. The treatments were repeated as above, however, six individuals from each treatment and control group were removed and sampled for blood (and then glucose and cortisol) at 0, 24, 48 and 72 h post release. Some changes in behaviour due to the salinity changes occurred as well as a significant main effect of time for cortisol, with all fish having significantly elevated acute stress at the first sample time. In experiment three, 52 S. ciliata were placed into individual tanks. Twenty‐six of these fish were allowed to ingest baited J‐hooks, played for 60 s, removed from their tanks, and then released after their lines were cut (50 mm from their mouths). Control fish were not touched. All fish were then monitored over 21 days. Six of the treatment fish died (between 3 h and 14 days), while the remaining hooked fish resumed feeding within 5 days and 25% ejected their hooks (between 1 and 19 days). It was concluded that (1) salinity and mouth hooking had few independent or interactive effects on the mortality or physiological response of angled‐and‐released S. ciliata and (2) while hook ingestion caused some mortalities, the protracted physiological effects were limited, with all surviving fish resuming feeding and some eventually ejecting their hooks.  相似文献

Sillaginid juveniles collected from the surf zone at Tigbauan, Iloilo, Philippines, between May 1986 and September 1987 were identified asSillago aeolus (n=702, 8.9–26.0 mm SL) andS. sihama (n=3414, 8.6–22.9 mm SL), based on the numbers of dorsal and anal soft fin rays and vertebrae. The two species were easily distinguishable by the pattern of melanophores distributed on the caudal fin base,S. aeolus having a triangular-shaped cluster, whereas the melanophores formed a vertical line inS. sihama. The ratios of pre-anal and caudal peduncle lengths to SL also differed between the species, both being higher inS. aeolus. The occurrence ofS. aeolus was limited to the dry season, from January to March. On the other hand,S. sihama occurred year-round, although a peak was observed in the dry season, from November to April.  相似文献

The embryonic, larval and juvenile development of blue whiting,Sillago parvisquamis Gill, are described from a series of laboratory-reared specimens. Mean egg diameter and mean total length (TL) of newly-hatched larvae were 0.71 mm and 1.58 mm, respectively. The eggs were non-adhesive, buoyant and spherical with an oil globule (mean diameter 0.18 mm). Hatching occurred about 20 hours after fertilization at a temperature of 24.0–25.0°C, newly-hatched larvae having 38–40 myomeres. The yolk and oil globule were completely absorbed 3 days after hatching at 2.8–3.2 (mean 3.0) mm TL. Notochord flexion was completed by 7.2–8.2 (7.7) mm TL, and pectoral and caudal fin rays fully developed by approximately 10 mm and 8.5 mm TL, respectively. Completion of fin development occurred in the following sequence: caudal, pectoral, anal and second dorsal, first dorsal and pelvic, the last-mentioned by approximately 11 mm TL. The larvae ofS. parvisquamis andS. japonica, which closely resemble each other in general morphology and pigmentation, could be distinguished as follows. Newly-hatchedS. parvisquamis larvae had more myomeres thanS. japonica (38–40 vs. 32–34) and more melanophores on the dorsal surface of the body (19–28 vs. about 40).Sillago japonica had a vertical band of melanophores on the caudal peduncle, which was lacking in postflexionS. parvisquamis larvae. In addition, juveniles ofS. parvisquamis (larger than 23 mm TL) had melanophores on the body extending anteriorly to below the lateral line to form a midlateral band, whereas no obvious band occurred on similarly-sizedS. japonica juveniles.  相似文献
