Decisions relating to the orientation of movement by animals and how this translates into movement patterns can occur at multiple spatial scales simultaneously, but this interaction is poorly understood for many groups of animals. Using the tracks left by moving snakes in their sandy habitat, we studied the movement paths of the African snake Bitis schneideri (Namaqua dwarf adder) for evidence of broad‐scale directional persistence and short‐range avoidance of exposure. Although snakes clearly displayed directional persistence, they preferentially moved to nearby shrubs, thereby minimizing exposure to solar and thermal radiation and/or predation. Thus, snakes made decisions relating to orientation at a minimum of two scales, the interaction of which resulted in snakes moving ≈17% (mean straightness index = 0.85) further than the simple broad‐scale straight‐line distance. We assert that the actual path chosen by moving snakes represents a trade‐off of various costs and risks that include risk of predation, exposure to the elements, time and energy expenditure. Our study highlights the need for cognizance of the possibility of the scale dependence of orientation and movement in studies of snake movement, and adds to a growing literature demonstrating previously unrecognized behavioural complexity in snakes.

A classic example of natural selection, that of color-pattern variation in Lake Erie island populations of water snakes, was reexamined to overcome shortcomings resulting from classification of snakes into discrete color-pattern categories and use of cross-sectional data. Four continuously varying color-pattern components (DB, the number of dorsal blotches; LB, the number of lateral blotches; ROWS, the height of lateral blotches measured in scale rows; and VEXT, the extent of ventral pigmentation) were analyzed. Patterns of natural selection were predicted from the relationship between color-pattern scores and independent measures of relative crypsis. Tests for natural selection were carried out using longitudinal data on neonate to juvenile-aged snakes and cross-sectional data on juvenile to adult-aged snakes. As predicted, the form of selection differed between younger and older age classes of snakes: selection resulted in a reduction in DB and LB among neonate and juvenile snakes but had little influence on color-pattern components in older snakes. The correspondence between observed patterns of natural selection and predictions based on the relationship between color-pattern scores and relative crypsis supports the hypothesis that differential predation by visual predators on younger age classes of snakes is the mechanism of selection. Gene flow from mainland populations or the initial lack of an allele necessary for reduced pattern may explain why selection has not resulted in greater differentiation between island and mainland populations.

The yellow-bellied sea snake, Pelamis platurus (Elapidae, Hydrophiinae), has the largest distribution of any snake species, and patterns related to its distribution and regional color variation suggest there is population structuring in this species. Here, we use mitochondrial (ND4, Cyt-b) and nuclear (RAG-1) DNA to (1) test whether genetic variation is associated with local variation in color pattern, and (2) assess whether large-scale patterns of genetic variation are correlated with geographic distribution across the Pacific Ocean. We found low levels of genetic variation and shallow population structure that are correlated with local variation in color pattern and with geographic distribution. The low levels of genetic divergence indicate a relatively high rate of gene flow throughout the Pacific region and/or a recent expansion of range, both of which could be attributable to the passive drifting of these snakes on oceanic surface currents. The mtDNA data conform closely to a model of past exponential population growth, and this may have been associated with the species' large eastward and westward expansion of range. The pattern of low nucleotide and high haplotype diversity suggests that this population growth occurred in the relatively recent past. Data from drifting buoys can potentially act as informative models for predicting patterns of drifting in Pelamis and for generating additional testable hypotheses relating to its population structure and biogeography. Future studies should employ nuclear microsatellite markers to investigate population structure in this species at a finer scale. The exploitation of oceanic currents as a novel and highly efficient dispersal mechanism has likely facilitated gene flow throughout the Pacific Ocean in this uniquely pelagic species of sea snake, resulting in a distribution spanning over half of the earth's circumference.

Seasonal variation in nest success is well documented for many bird species. Predator behavior has been suggested as a mechanism behind these seasonal patterns, but this hypothesis has received little attention. Here we test the hypothesis that predator behavior produces seasonal patterns of nest success by relating nest success of northern cardinals Cardinalis cardinalis to the activity of Texas rat snakes Elaphe obsoleta. Cardinal nest survival varied over the season and was lower when rat snakes were more active. The probability that a nest survived was associated both with when cardinals nested and with nest height, indicating that both temporal and habitat factors affected predation risk. The increased success of higher nests could be associated with some aspect of rat snakes’ climbing ability. In combination with results for two other species studied previously at the same location, our results for cardinals suggest that the specific seasonal pattern of nest success expected for a given bird species will depend on how its nesting season coincides with predator activity. Determining the generality of seasonal variation in predator behavior as a mechanism for producing seasonal patterns of avian nest success will require additional studies that investigate birds and their nest predators simultaneously.

Aim  To document geographical interspecific patterns of body size of European and North American squamate reptile assemblages and explore the relationship between body size patterns and environmental gradients.
Location  North America and western Europe.
Methods  We processed distribution maps for native species of squamate reptiles to document interspecific spatial variation of body size at a grain size of 110 × 110 km. We also examined seven environmental variables linked to four hypotheses possibly influencing body size gradients. We used simple and multiple regression, evaluated using information theory, to identify the set of models best supported by the data.
Results  Europe is characterized by clear latitudinal trends in body size, whereas geographical variation in body size in North America is complex. There is a consistent association of mean body size with measures of ambient energy in both regions, although lizards increase in size northwards whereas snakes show the opposite pattern. Our best models accounted for almost 60% of the variation in body size of lizards and snakes within Europe, but the proportions of variance explained in North America were less than 20%.
Main conclusions  Although body size influences the energy balance of thermoregulating ectotherms, inconsistent biogeographical patterns and contrasting associations with energy in lizards and snakes suggest that no single mechanism can explain variation of reptile body size in the northern temperate zone.

ABSTRACT The decline of many snake populations is attributable to habitat loss, and knowledge of habitat use is critical to their conservation. Resource characteristics (e.g., relative availability of different habitat types, soils, and slopes) within a landscape are scale-dependent and may not be equal across multiple spatial scales. Thus, it is important to identify the relevant spatial scales at which resource selection occurs. We conducted a radiotelemetry study of eastern hognose snake (Heterodon platirhinos) home range size and resource use at different hierarchical spatial scales. We present the results for 8 snakes radiotracked during a 2-year study at New Boston Air Force Station (NBAFS) in southern New Hampshire, USA, where the species is listed by the state as endangered. Mean home range size (minimum convex polygon) at NBAFS (51.7 ± 14.7 ha) was similar to that reported in other parts of the species’ range. Radiotracked snakes exhibited different patterns of resource use at different spatial scales. At the landscape scale (selection of locations within the landscape), snakes overutilized old-field and forest edge habitats and underutilized forested habitats and wetlands relative to availability. At this scale, snakes also overutilized areas containing sandy loam soils and areas with lower slope (mean slope = 5.2% at snake locations vs. 6.7% at random locations). We failed to detect some of these patterns of resource use at the home range scale (i.e., within the home range). Our ability to detect resource selection by the snakes only at the landscape scale is likely the result of greater heterogeneity in macrohabitat features at the broader landscape scale. From a management perspective, future studies of habitat selection for rare species should include measurement of available habitat at spatial scales larger than the home range. We suggest that the maintenance of open early successional habitats as a component of forested landscapes will be critical for the persistence of eastern hognose snake populations in the northeastern United States.

Pattern formation in many biological systems takes place during growth of the underlying domain. We study a specific example of a reaction-diffusion (Turing) model in which peak splitting, driven by domain growth, generates a sequence of patterns. We have previously shown that the pattern sequences which are presented when the domain growth rate is sufficiently rapid exhibit a mode-doubling phenomenon. Such pattern sequences afford reliable selection of certain final patterns, thus addressing the robustness problem inherent of the Turing mechanism. At slower domain growth rates this regular mode doubling breaks down in the presence of small perturbations to the dynamics. In this paper we examine the breaking down of the mode doubling sequence and consider the implications of this behaviour in increasing the range of reliably selectable final patterns.

The bright coloured, highly venomous coral snakes, Leptomicrurus, Micrurus and Micruroides (family Elapidae) and a series of harmless or mildly toxic mimics form an important component of the snake fauna of the Americas. Coral snake patterns are defined as any dorsal pattern found in any species of venomous coral snake and/or any dorsal pattern containing a substantial amount of red, pink or orange distributed so as to resemble that of some species of venomous coral snake. The components of coral snake colouration are described and four principal dorsal patterns are recognized: unicolour, bicolour, tricolour and quadricolour. The tricolour patterns may be further clustered based on the number of black bands or rings separating the red ones as: monads, dyads, triads, tetrads or pentads. A detailed classification of all coral snake colour patterns is presented and each pattern is illustrated. The taxonomic distribution of these patterns is surveyed for mimics and the 56 species of highly venomous coral snakes. Among the latter, the most frequent encountered patterns are tricolour monads, tricolour triads and bicolour rings, in that order. No venomous coral snakes have a tricolour dyad, tricolour tetrad or quadricolour pattern. As many as 115 species of harmless or mildly toxic species, c. 18% of all American snakes, are regarded as coral snake mimics. The colouration and behavioural traits of venomous coral snakes combine to form a significant antipredator defence of an aposematic type. The mimics in turn receive protection from predators that innately or through learning avoid coral snake colour patterns. The precise resemblances in colouration between sympatric non-coral snakes and venomous coral snakes and the concordant geographic variation between the two strongly support this view. Batesian mimicry with the highly venomous coral snakes as the models and the other forms as the mimics is the favoured explanation for this situation. It is further concluded that a number of species in the genera Elaphe, Farancia, Nerodia and Thamnophis, although having red in their colouration, should not be included in the coral snake mimic guild.

We typically observe large‐scale outcomes that arise from the interactions of many hidden, small‐scale processes. Examples include age of disease onset, rates of amino acid substitutions and composition of ecological communities. The macroscopic patterns in each problem often vary around a characteristic shape that can be generated by neutral processes. A neutral generative model assumes that each microscopic process follows unbiased or random stochastic fluctuations: random connections of network nodes; amino acid substitutions with no effect on fitness; species that arise or disappear from communities randomly. These neutral generative models often match common patterns of nature. In this paper, I present the theoretical background by which we can understand why these neutral generative models are so successful. I show where the classic patterns come from, such as the Poisson pattern, the normal or Gaussian pattern and many others. Each classic pattern was often discovered by a simple neutral generative model. The neutral patterns share a special characteristic: they describe the patterns of nature that follow from simple constraints on information. For example, any aggregation of processes that preserves information only about the mean and variance attracts to the Gaussian pattern; any aggregation that preserves information only about the mean attracts to the exponential pattern; any aggregation that preserves information only about the geometric mean attracts to the power law pattern. I present a simple and consistent informational framework of the common patterns of nature based on the method of maximum entropy. This framework shows that each neutral generative model is a special case that helps to discover a particular set of informational constraints; those informational constraints define a much wider domain of non‐neutral generative processes that attract to the same neutral pattern.

Branching pattern formation is common in many microbes. Extensive studies have focused on addressing how such patterns emerge from local cell–cell and cell–environment interactions. However, little is known about whether and to what extent these patterns play a physiological role. Here, we consider the colonization of bacteria as an optimization problem to find the colony patterns that maximize colony growth efficiency under different environmental conditions. We demonstrate that Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonies develop branching patterns with characteristics comparable to the prediction of modeling; for example, colonies form thin branches in a nutrient‐poor environment. Hence, the formation of branching patterns represents an optimal strategy for the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonies. The quantitative relationship between colony patterns and growth conditions enables us to develop a coarse‐grained model to predict diverse colony patterns under more complex conditions, which we validated experimentally. Our results offer new insights into branching pattern formation as a problem‐solving social behavior in microbes and enable fast and accurate predictions of complex spatial patterns in branching colonies.

Spatial heterogeneity in species abundance arises from both extrinsic (largely abiotic) and intrinsic (largely biotic) processes. The relative importance of these two types of processes can vary across ecological systems and across temporal and spatial scales. Numerous empirical studies have explored spatial patterns resulting from extrinsic and intrinsic processes, however the interaction of these two types of processes can result in complex patterns that are difficult to test. We used a unique model system consisting of periphytic algae grown on agar in an experimental stream to manipulate an extrinsic and an intrinsic process. We manipulated an extrinsic process by varying the spatial arrangement of nutrients creating both heterogeneous and homogeneous environments for the algae. We manipulated an intrinsic process by introducing a snail herbivore to the system. The resulting spatial algal patterns showed that both types of processes were important in producing spatial abundance patterns and that the patterns occurred at two distinct spatial scales in our system. At the scale of the imposed nutrient heterogeneity, algae “tracked” the differences in nutrient supply rates. The snail herbivores both reduced and promoted spatial patterns in algal abundance at different spatial scales reflecting their species-specific foraging behavior. An ability to detect differences in algal abundance allowed the snails to reduce the power of patterns at the scale of the imposed nutrient heterogeneity; however below a spatial scale of approximately 30 mm the snails could no longer detect differences in algal abundance and so foraged randomly. At this spatial scale the spatial heterogeneity in algal abundance increased and the resulting algal patterns were relatively spatially fixed through time. We suggest that this relative constancy may arise in part from a detected weak Allee effect in algal growth rates.

Periphyton is an aquatic community composed by algae, bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that can develop a complex architecture comparable to tropical forests. We analyzed the spatial pattern of a periphyton community along a succession developed in experimental tanks. Our aim was to identify regularities that may help us to explain the patchiness of this community. Therefore, we estimated the spatial pattern of periphyton biomass using a non‐destructive image analysis technique to obtain a temporal series of the spatial distribution. These were analyzed using multifractal techniques. Multifractals are analogous to fractals but they look at the geometry of quantities instead of the geometry of pattern. To use these techniques the object of study must show scale invariance and then can be characterized by a spectra of fractal dimensions. Self‐organization describes the evolution of complex structures that emerge spontaneously driven internally by variations of the system itself. The spatial distribution of biomass showed scale invariance at all stages of succession and as the periphyton developed in a homogeneous landscape, in a demonstration of self‐organized behavior. Self‐organization to a critical state (SOC) is presented in the complex systems literature as a general explanation for scale invariance in nature. SOC requires a mechanism where the history of past events in a place influence the actual dynamics, this was termed ecological memory. The scale invariance was found from the very beginning of the succession thus self‐organized criticality is a very improbable explanation for the pattern because there would be not enough time for the build‐up of ecological memory. Positive interactions between algae and bacteria, and the existence of different spatial scales of colonization and growth are the likely causes of this pattern. Our work is a demonstration of how large scale patterns emerge from local biotic interactions.

The relationship between number of ventral scales, correlating with number of body vertebrae, and body size of adders, Vipera berus , was investigated using captive-born young and wild-caught adults (snout-vent length > 400 mm) from six populations in eastern Sweden. Females had significantly more ventral scales, and were larger, than males in all populations. Among adult individuals, snout-vent length was highly positively correlated with the number of ventral scales when differences due to sex and locality were controlled for. The same pattern was true for newborn individuals when differences due to litter and sex were controlled for. The influence of number of ventral scales on survival and growth rate as possible causes of this positive correlation was examined. Mean number of ventral scales was lower in new-born snakes than in adults, indicating selection against individuals with a low scale count. Since this selection appears to take place in the early juvenile phase, it is inadequate to explain the relationship between adult body size and number of ventral scales. However, individuals with many ventral scales had significantly higher growth rates than individuals with few ventrals. This suggests that individuals with many ventral scales enjoy a higher growth rate and therefore are able to reach a larger size than their conspecifics of the same age with few ventral scales. This would explain the positive relationship between body size and ventral scale number observed in new-born and adult snakes.

Mimicry, the resemblance of one species by another, is a complex phenomenon where the mimic (Batesian mimicry) or the model and the mimic (Mullerian mimicry) gain an advantage from this phenotypic convergence. Despite the expectation that mimics should closely resemble their models, many mimetic species appear to be poor mimics. This is particularly apparent in some systems in which there are multiple available models. However, the influence of model pattern diversity on the evolution of mimetic systems remains poorly understood. We tested whether the number of model patterns a predator learns to associate with a negative consequence affects their willingness to try imperfect, novel patterns. We exposed week‐old chickens to coral snake (Micrurus) color patterns representative of three South American areas that differ in model pattern richness, and then tested their response to the putative imperfect mimetic pattern of a widespread species of harmless colubrid snake (Oxyrhopus rhombifer) in different social contexts. Our results indicate that chicks have a great hesitation to attack when individually exposed to high model pattern diversity and a greater hesitation to attack when exposed as a group to low model pattern diversity. Individuals with a fast growth trajectory (measured by morphological traits) were also less reluctant to attack. We suggest that the evolution of new patterns could be favored by social learning in areas of low pattern diversity, while individual learning can reduce predation pressure on recently evolved mimics in areas of high model diversity. Our results could aid the development of ecological predictions about the evolution of imperfect mimicry and mimicry in general.

Traveling waves in the developing brain are a prominent source of highly correlated spiking activity that may instruct the refinement of neural circuits. A candidate mechanism for mediating such refinement is spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP), which translates correlated activity patterns into changes in synaptic strength. To assess the potential of these phenomena to build useful structure in developing neural circuits, we examined the interaction of wave activity with STDP rules in simple, biologically plausible models of spiking neurons. We derive an expression for the synaptic strength dynamics showing that, by mapping the time dependence of STDP into spatial interactions, traveling waves can build periodic synaptic connectivity patterns into feedforward circuits with a broad class of experimentally observed STDP rules. The spatial scale of the connectivity patterns increases with wave speed and STDP time constants. We verify these results with simulations and demonstrate their robustness to likely sources of noise. We show how this pattern formation ability, which is analogous to solutions of reaction-diffusion systems that have been widely applied to biological pattern formation, can be harnessed to instruct the refinement of postsynaptic receptive fields. Our results hold for rich, complex wave patterns in two dimensions and over several orders of magnitude in wave speeds and STDP time constants, and they provide predictions that can be tested under existing experimental paradigms. Our model generalizes across brain areas and STDP rules, allowing broad application to the ubiquitous occurrence of traveling waves and to wave-like activity patterns induced by moving stimuli.

In many developing tissues, neighboring cells enter different developmental pathways, resulting in a fine-grained pattern of different cell states. The most common mechanism that generates such patterns is lateral inhibition, for example through Delta-Notch coupling. In this work, we simulate growth of tissues consisting of a hexagonal arrangement of cells laterally inhibiting their neighbors. We find that tissue growth by cell division and cell migration tends to produce ordered patterns, whereas lateral growth leads to disordered, patchy patterns. Ordered patterns are very robust to mutations (gene silencing or activation) in single cells. In contrast, mutation in a cell of a disordered tissue can produce a larger and more widespread perturbation of the pattern. In tissues where ordered and disordered patches coexist, the perturbations spread mostly at boundaries between patches. If cell division occurs on time scales faster than the degradation time, disordered patches will appear. Our work suggests that careful experimental characterization of the disorder in tissues could pinpoint where and how the tissue is susceptible to large-scale damage even from single cell mutations.

Multiple studies have addressed the mechanisms maintaining polymorphism within a population. However, several examples exist where species inhabiting diverse habitats exhibit local population-specific polymorphism. Numerous explanations have been proposed for the maintenance of geographic variation in color patterns. For example, spatial variation in patterns of selection or limited gene flow can cause entire populations to become fixed for a single morph, resulting in separate populations of the same species exhibiting separate and distinct color morphs. The mottled rock rattlesnake (Crotalus lepidus lepidus) is a montane species that exhibits among-population color polymorphism that correlates with substrate color. Habitat substrate in the eastern part of its range is composed primarily of light colored limestone and snakes have light dorsal coloration, whereas in the western region the substrate is primarily dark and snakes exhibit dark dorsal coloration. We hypothesized that predation on high contrast color and blotched patterns maintain these distinct color morphs. To test this we performed a predation experiment in the wild by deploying model snakes at 12 sites evenly distributed within each of the two regions where the different morphs are found. We employed a 2×2 factorial design that included two color and two blotched treatments. Our results showed that models contrasting with substrate coloration suffered significantly more avian attacks relative to models mimicking substrates. Predation attempts on blotched models were similar in each substrate type. These results support the hypothesis that color pattern is maintained by selective predation.
