Variation in within-population floral density can affect interactions between plants and pollinators, resulting in variable
pollen export for plants. We investigated the effects of conspecific and heterospecific floral densities on pollination success
both of two related, self-compatible, nectar-rewarding orchid species in Ireland, Spiranthes
romanzoffiana (rare and listed as endangered) and its congener, S. spiralis (more abundant and not of conservation concern). Floral densities, insect visitation rates, and orchid pollen transport were
recorded in multiple quadrats in four populations of both orchid species over their flowering season. We found that conspecific
and heterospecific co-flowering plant density affected pollination in both orchid species. For S. romanzoffiana, higher heterospecific density increased pollen removal. For S. spiralis, higher conspecific visitation increased pollen removal and increased heterospecific density decreased pollen deposition.
In addition, increased conspecific density increased pollen deposition in both species. This study shows that plants may interact
to facilitate or compete for different components of the pollination process, namely; pollinator attraction, pollen removal
and deposition. Such interactions have immediate consequences for endangered plant species, as increases in both conspecific
and heterospecific coflowering density may ameliorate the negative effects of rarity on pollination, hence overall reproductive
success. 相似文献

Direct observation was used to construct activity budgets for Diaphorencyrtus aligarhensis (Shafee, Alam & Agarwal) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and Tamarixia radiata (Waterston) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), foraging for nymphs of Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae). Two populations of D. aligarhensis were used in experiments: a biparental population from Pakistan and a uniparental population from Taiwan. Parasitoids were provisioned with 20 D. citri nymphs, second through fifth instar; female parasitoids from all three populations foraged alone, in conspecific pairs, or in heterospecific pairs. Walking occupied approximately 40% of the activity budget of D. aligarhensis and ovipositor probing occupied 10–20%. In contrast, probing and walking each accounted for approximately 30% of the activity budget of T. radiata. The presence of conspecific females affected the activity budget of D. aligarhensis females, such that the focal female was observed walking less often and probing more frequently. Heterospecific females did not affect D. aligarhensis activity. These results suggest mutual interference may occur between D. aligarhensis females foraging on the same host patch. The behaviour of T. radiata was not significantly affected by the presence of conspecific or heterospecific competitors. These results are discussed with respect to the release of multiple species of natural enemies in the classical biological control programme targeting D. citri in California. 相似文献

Woody plant encroachment of savanna ecosystems has been related to altered disturbance regimes, mainly fire suppression and
herbivore exclusion. In contrast, neighbourhood interactions among resident and colonising woody species have received little
attention, despite their likely influence on the pattern and rate of tree establishment. We examined how resident palm trees
(Butia yatay) and established adults of two riparian forest tree species (Allophylus edulis and Sebastiania commersoniana) influenced seed arrival and seedling performance of the latter two species in a humid savanna of east-central Argentina.
Seed traps and seedlings of both riparian species were placed in herbaceous openings, and beneath palm, conspecific and heterospecific
adult trees in two unburned savanna patches, and were monitored for 2 years. Only seeds of the bird-dispersed Allophylus arrived in palm microsites, yet survival of Allophylus seedlings near adult palms was limited by animal damage through trampling and burrowing, a non-trophic mechanism of apparent
competition. Seeds of both riparian species dispersed into conspecific microsites, although adult trees selectively reduced
growth of conspecific seedlings, a pattern consistent with the “escape hypothesis”. Further, survival of Sebastiania increased in the moister Allophylus microsites, suggesting a one-way facilitative interaction between woody colonisers. Our results indicate that dispersal facilitation
by resident savanna trees may be critical to riparian species invasion after fire suppression. Distance-dependent effects
of conspecific and heterospecific adult trees could contribute to shape the subsequent dynamics of woody seedling establishment.
Overall, we show that indirect interactions can play a prominent role in savanna encroachment by non-resident woody species. 相似文献

Odour-mediated responses of phytophagous mites to conspecific and heterospecific competitors 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Plants under herbivore attack produce volatiles, thus attracting natural enemies of the herbivores. However, in doing so,
the plant becomes more conspicuous to other herbivores. Herbivores may use the odours as a cue to refrain from visiting plants
that are already infested, thereby avoiding competition for food, or, alternatively, to visit plants with defences weakened
by earlier attacks. We investigated the response of one species of herbivore (the spider mite Tetranychus urticae) to odours emanating from cucumber plants infested by conspecific or heterospecific (the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis) herbivores. Olfactometer experiments in the laboratory showed that spider mites have a slight, but significant, preference
for plants infested with conspecifics, but strongly avoid plants with thrips. These results were substantiated with greenhouse
experiments. We released spider mites on the soil in the centre of a circle of six plants, half of which were infested with
either conspecifics or heterospecifics (thrips), whereas the other half were uninfested. It was found that 60–70% of the mites
were recaptured on the plants within 5 h after release. Results of these experiments were in agreement with results of the
olfactometer experiments: (1) significantly fewer spider mites were found on plants infested with thrips than on uninfested
plants and (2) more mites were found on plants with conspecifics than on clean plants (although this difference was not significant).
From a functional point of view it makes sense that spider mites prefer clean plants over thrips-infested plants, since thrips
are not only competitors, but are also known as intraguild predators of spider mites. Possible reasons for the slight attraction
of spider mites to plants infested with conspecifics are discussed.

Many terrestrial mammals scent mark in areas containing the scent marks of conspecifics, and thus, may deposit their own scent marks on top of those that were deposited previously by conspecifics. This phenomenon, known as over-marking appears to play a role in same-sex competition or mate attraction. The present study determines whether meadow and prairie voles avoid over-marking the scent marks of conspecifics, target the scent marks of conspecifics and over-mark them, or randomly over-mark the scent marks of conspecifics. The data show that meadow and prairie voles adjust the number and location of scent marks that they deposit in areas marked previously by particular conspecifics. Male and female meadow and prairie voles target the scent marks of opposite-sex conspecifics and over-mark them. Female meadow and prairie voles also target the scent marks of female conspecifics. In contrast, male meadow and prairie voles over-mark the scent marks of male conspecifics in a random manner. By differentially over-marking the scent marks of conspecifics, voles may be able to communicate particular information to a variety of conspecifics. 相似文献

The attack, escape and predation rates for larvae of aphidophagous ladybird Propylea dissecta (Mulsant) and Coccinella transversalis Fabricius were quantified as a potential mechanism leading to the differences in the incidence of cannibalism and intraguild predation. These rates were compared at four larval instars within and between the species. The attack rates of larvae of C. transversalis were significantly higher than those of P. dissecta towards conspecific and heterospecific victims. For both species, third instars exhibited maximum tendency to attack. Escape rates in C. transversalis were higher than P. dissecta. In P. dissecta, the second instars made a greater number of escapes than other conspecific instars after being attacked by same stage cannibal or heterospecific predator. In P. dissecta, first instars suffered maximum mortality due to cannibalism and intraguild predation by conspecifics and heterospecifics of the same and older developmental stage. No larvae of C. transversalis were eaten by P. dissecta of the same stage. These results suggest that the larvae of P. dissecta were more often potential cannibals than intraguild predators, while the reverse was the case in C. transversalis. Based on this finding, it could be predicted that in patchy prey habitats, high rates of larval cannibalism in P. dissecta would occur with a high risk of cannibalism of first instars. Larvae of C. transversalis would respond as intraguild predators, while those of P. dissecta as intraguild prey. The greater size and walking activity of C. transversalis could be possible reason for this tendency. 相似文献

We studied the influence of immigration on the dynamics ofMicrotus ochrogaster Wagner, 1842 andM. pennsylvanicus Ord, 1815 populations in alfalfa, bluegrass, and tallgrass prairie in east-central Illinois for 25 years. The numbers of immigrants in a site were positively correlated with overall population densities of the species in the vicinity of the study sites and within the study site. Population density of the other species was not correlated with immigration of either species. Immigrants did not differ significantly from residents with respect to sex-ratio and reproductive condition. Persistence of immigrantM. pennsylvanicus was lower than that of resident adults in all three habitats, while that of immigrantM. ochrogaster was lower than that of resident adults in alfalfa, where the species was most abundant. Neither the absolute number of immigrants nor the proportion of the population composed of immigrants indicated an effect of immigrants on among- and within-habitat differences in demography and population fluctuations of either species. Immigrants may have been an important factor in maintenance ofM. pennsylvanicus in alfalfa, a low-quality habitat, but the influence of immigration on the dynamics of populations inhabiting other habitats was insubstantial. 相似文献

Courtship vocalizations of male songbirds can profoundly enhance the reproductive physiology and behavior of conspecific females. However, no study has fully investigated the selectivity of conspecific song effects on reproductive development in birds. We studied the effects of conspecific and heterospecific song on reproductive development in domesticated (canaries) and wild songbirds (song sparrows). As expected, conspecific song enhanced follicular development. Unexpectedly, however, birds exposed to heterospecific song also underwent enhanced follicular development (compared to birds exposed to no song); conspecific and heterospecific songs were equally effective in enhancing ovarian development. In canaries exposed to 18L:6D, conspecific song induced oviposition earlier and at a greater frequency than in heterospecific and no song groups, with the fewest eggs being laid in the no song group. These results indicate that conspecific and heterospecific male song can enhance reproductive activity in female songbirds. Whether or not activation of the reproductive axis in female songbirds by heterospecific song occurs in the wild remains unclear. It is also unclear as to whether the ability of the reproductive axis to respond to heterospecific song performs a specific function, or whether it is simply a consequence of greater selection pressure acting upon behavioral responses to song. 相似文献

Influence of conspecific and heterospecific aggregation cues and alarm odors on shelter choice by syntopic spiny lobsters 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In spiny lobsters, conspecific scents ("aggregation cues") may mediate gregarious diurnal sheltering, but scents from injured conspecifics ("alarm odors") may elicit avoidance behavior. In laboratory experiments, individuals of two coexisting species, Panulirus guttatus (a reef-obligate) and P. argus (a temporary reef-dweller), significantly chose shelters emanating conspecific aggregation cues and responded randomly to shelters emanating heterospecific aggregation cues. However, despite evidence that the two species perceived each other's alarm odors to a similar extent, P. guttatus responded randomly to shelters emanating either conspecific or heterospecific alarm odors, whereas P. argus significantly avoided both. This differential influence of alarm odors likely reflects interspecific differences in life history, sociality, and behavior. The less social, reef-obligate P. guttatus lobsters forage close to their reef dens, into which they retract deeply upon perception of risk. This cryptic behavior may offset the need to avoid conspecific (and heterospecific) alarm odors. In contrast, avoidance of conspecific alarm odors by P. argus is consistent with its ontogenetic habitat shifts and greater sociality. Furthermore, because reef-dwelling P. argus lobsters forage across open areas away from the reef, an ability to avoid alarm odors from P. guttatus upon returning to their reef dens may increase their fitness. 相似文献

Biological odours of conspecifics are known to have strong influences on behavioural interaction in bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus. This experiment tested two hypotheses. (1) Olfactory cues from familiar and unfamiliar mature opposite-sex conspecifics differ in their attractiveness to males and females, and their behavioural reactions change with age. (2) A genetically based mechanism is involved in female recognition of kin.In a two-choice preference test, prepubertal males and females were more attracted to familiar than to unfamiliar odours of opposite-sex conspecifics, as manifested by more time spent sniffing familiar voles. As the young reached sexual maturity they shifted their odour preferences. Mature males and females preferred the novel odour of unrelated opposite-sex conspecifics to that of relatives. The results of experiments testing the second hypothesis indicate that females use a genetically based mechanism to recognise their kin. Young and mature females were able to recognise the odour of their biological but socially unknown fathers, and showed the same pattern of behaviour as females in previous experiments. The possible biological functions of kin recognition in bank voles are discussed. 相似文献

Effects of physical connection and genetic identity of neighbouring ramets on root-placement patterns in two clonal species 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Root-placement patterns were examined in the clonal species Glechoma hederacea and Fragaria vesca when grown with different types of neighbours. Three different patterns were predicted as consequences of different types of interactions between roots: the avoidance pattern if root growth decreases in the presence of neighbouring roots; the intrusive pattern if root growth increases towards neighbouring roots; and the unresponsive pattern if root growth is unaffected by neighbouring roots. Experiments were conducted in which physical connection between ramets, and the genetic identity of neighbouring ramets, were manipulated. The patterns of distribution of entire root systems and elongation rates of individual roots were measured. Root systems and individual roots of G. hederacea avoided contact with roots of neighbouring ramets, irrespective of connection to the neighbour and its genetic or specific identity. In contrast, F. vesca roots grew equally towards and away from intraspecific ramet neighbours and their elongation was stimulated by contact with roots of G. hederacea ramets. These results demonstrate that root-placement patterns of plants grown with different types of neighbours vary between species, and suggest that factors additional to resource depletion could be involved in their development. 相似文献

Several studies have shown female preference for conspecific males with the attached artificial ornaments of more elaborate heterospecifics. However, preference for heterospecifics under natural conditions is relatively rare. We tested what factors affect behavioural mechanisms of species isolation using three species of estrildid finch (genus Uraeginthus) that occur in both sympatry and allopatry. These finches differ in degree of sexual dimorphism; male ornamentation; behavioural and morphological similarity; and phylogenetic distance. Paired mate-choice trials were used in which females were presented with a conspecific and heterospecific male to test which of the above between-species differences best predicted the degree of premating isolation. The three species differed in the degree of species-specific mate preference shown. Females from the brighter two species discriminated against dull males, independently of sympatry-allopatry, similarity and phylogenetic distance. Females from the dull species reacted to conspecific males and brighter heterospecific males equally strongly, independently of similarity and phylogenetic distance. In contrast to previous studies, an equal preference for heterospecific and conspecific males was found under natural conditions. It is suggested that differences between closely related species in male ornamentation affect the likelihood that premating isolation will occur due to the fact that sexual selection tends to drive preferences for exaggerated ornamentation. 相似文献

Several models are presented which examine pest population behaviour with the release of female sex pheromones for the attraction and annihilation of males. These models include male polygamy and female monogamy, various mating frequencies, delayed mating of females, immigration of one or all individual types, and differential survivorship of males and females. In all the models there are two steady states, a stable s.s. at the origin and an unstable s.s. in the positive domain for a given value of pheromone release rate. In all the models, control relies on the reduced ability of males to fertilize virgin females following trapping and male annihilation. As such, control is very sensitive to mating frequency, being very difficult when males mate frequently. Control is also very difficult with the immigration of even a moderate number of fertilized females. Control is much easier when mating is delayed, especially if survivorship is low, or with density dependent population regulation. 相似文献

Songbird auditory areas (i.e., CMM and NCM) are preferentially activated to playback of conspecific vocalizations relative to heterospecific and arbitrary noise. Here, we asked if the neural response to auditory stimulation is not simply preferential for conspecific vocalizations but also for the information conveyed by the vocalization. Black-capped chickadees use their chick-a-dee mobbing call to recruit conspecifics and other avian species to mob perched predators. Mobbing calls produced in response to smaller, higher-threat predators contain more "D" notes compared to those produced in response to larger, lower-threat predators and thus convey the degree of threat of predators. We specifically asked whether the neural response varies with the degree of threat conveyed by the mobbing calls of chickadees and whether the neural response is the same for actual predator calls that correspond to the degree of threat of the chickadee mobbing calls. Our results demonstrate that, as degree of threat increases in conspecific chickadee mobbing calls, there is a corresponding increase in immediate early gene (IEG) expression in telencephalic auditory areas. We also demonstrate that as the degree of threat increases for the heterospecific predator, there is a corresponding increase in IEG expression in the auditory areas. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the amount IEG expression between conspecific mobbing calls or heterospecific predator calls that were the same degree of threat. In a second experiment, using hand-reared chickadees without predator experience, we found more IEG expression in response to mobbing calls than corresponding predator calls, indicating that degree of threat is learned. Our results demonstrate that degree of threat corresponds to neural activity in the auditory areas and that threat can be conveyed by different species signals and that these signals must be learned. 相似文献

Biotas of both geographical islands and habitat islands are often nested subsets of the biotas of successively more species-rich
islands within the same system. The life history characteristics of a species may determine how that species contributes to
the general pattern of species nestedness. Here, I investigate the floras of 56 sedge meadow wetlands in northern Illinois
(USA) in order to characterize the degree of nestedness in these communities, determine which individual plant species contribute
to the nested pattern, and investigate species characteristics that might be related to nonrandom patterns of distribution
in individual plant species. The entire assemblage of species at all sedge meadows was significantly nested. Species richness
and area were significantly correlated, and the nested pattern was closely related to site area, suggesting that species drop
out of the assemblage in a predictable order as site area decreases. Some individual species exhibited nonrandom distributions
across the sites, occurring more often in large, species-rich sites. Large sites were more likely than smaller sites to contain
conservative species, i.e., those typical of pristine natural habitat, whereas nonconservative species were distributed more
randomly among sites. Nested patterns of distribution of conservative species with respect to site area may result from their
high probability of extinction on small sites or from a tendency for required habitats to co-occur on the same large sites.
