A good way to check hypotheses explaining the invasion of ecosystems by exotic plants is to compare alien and native congeneric species. To test the hypothesis that invasive alien plants are more competitive than natives, we designed a replacement series experiment to evaluate interspecific competition between three Senecio species representing the same bushy life form: two alien species (S. inaequidens and S. pterophorus, both from South Africa) and a native species from the south-east of the Iberian Peninsula and Maghreb (S. malacitanus). While S. inaequidens is widespread throughout western Europe and is expanding towards the south of Spanish–French border, the geographical distribution of the recently introduced S. pterophorus is still limited to north-eastern Spain. Plants from each species were grown in pure and in mixed cultures with one of their congeners, and water availability was manipulated to evaluate the effects of water stress on competitive abilities. Our results show that the alien S. inaequidens is the most competitive species for all water conditions. The native S. malacitanus is more competitive that the alien S. pterophorus in water stress conditions, but this situation is reversed when water availability is not limiting.  相似文献

The impact of the introduced White-eye Zosterops japonicus on the endemic White-eye Apalopteron familiare was studied on Hahajima and Chichijima of the Bonin Islands. A. familiare preferred primary forests whereas Z. japonicus preferred open habitats, but their distribution greatly overlapped in secondary forests. The population density of A. familiare was stable whereas the Z. japonicus population had increased in number over the last 20 years, probably because of an increase in the area of open habitats. The data suggested that the population density of A. familiare had not been affected by the spreading Z. japonicus . The body weight of fledgling A. familiare was not affected significantly by the presence of Z. japonicus . Food items taken by A. familiare were similar to those of Z. japonicus . Where the species did not coexist, A. familiare foraged at all heights of the forest, but in the area of overlap, this species reduced its use of higher parts of the forest canopy where Z. japonicus foraged frequently. The food selection of A. familiare , however, did not change in the presence of Z. japonicus . This study detected almost no negative ecological relationship between Z. japonicus and A. familiare and suggests that competition is not a significant threat to either species. A. familiare may, if anything, benefit from Z. japonicus by forming a mixed-species flock in the non-breeding season.  相似文献

Summary House Finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), natives of western North America, have expanded their range in the eastern United States since their 1940 release in New York City. Range and the relation of House Finch population growth to the population dynamics of House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) and Purple Finches (Carpodacus purpureus) were examined, using data from the Breeding Bird Survey and the Christmas Bird Count. The House Finch population grew exponentially throughout its eastern range. Significant negative relationships in population density, relative to spatial and temporal control populations, were found between House Finches and House Sparrows in summer and winter, and between House Finches and Purple Finches in summer. Purple Finch and House Sparrow populations outside of the House Finch range appeared to have no effect on each other throughout the study. Neither changes in 74 weather variables, nor changes in forest, field or developed habitat explained the observed trends in population density. The results indicate that House Finches compete with these two species, but winter migration complicates the picture.  相似文献

Lake Valencia is located in the centre of the endemic area of the intestinal schistosimiasis in Venezuela. The dominance of two pulmonate species, Biomphalaria glabrata and B. prona., was observed in the lake. Both species are strongly associated with two distinct types of habitats suggesting that competition is occurring between these two species. B. glabrata and B. prona play the role of intermediate hosts of schistosomes in Venezuela. At the present time, parasite transmission is not occurring in the lake but the planning of important development programmes represents a risk of creation of active schistosomiasis foci. The knowledge of the importance and distribution of the snail host populations is therefore essential and must be taken into account for developing future control strategies.  相似文献

1. The introduced North American crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana, is expanding its range in Europe and locally often replaces two native crayfish species, Astacus astacus L. and Austropotamobius pallipes Lereboullet. Pacifastacus leniusculus is also expected to invade the habitat of a third native crayfish, the endangered Austropotamobius torrentium Schrank. Interspecific aggressive interactions and competition for shelter were experimentally studied in the laboratory to assess the potential impact of P. leniusculus on A. torrentium .
2. Neither species was inherently dominant in aggressive interactions, but dominance was strongly size-dependent, favouring the larger and faster growing species, P. leniusculus .
3. Access to limited shelter was generally determined by aggressive dominance, although species-specific preference also influenced the outcome of competition for shelter. Austropotamobius torrentium had a higher preference for experimental shelters and often defended these even against larger P. leniusculus .
4. In accordance with theoretical models of animal conflicts, agonistic interactions between equally sized contestants were more severe than between animals of different size.
5. The P. leniusculus used in the present experiment were infected with the crayfish plague, Aphanomyces astaci , to which the animals are resistant. The crayfish transmitted the disease to non-resistant A. torrentium which died ≈ 2 weeks after contact with P. leniusculus .  相似文献

This study was designed to understand the effects of the interspecific competition between red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren and two native ant species, Pheidole fervens Smith and Monomorium chinense Santschi, by conducting colony interference and individual confrontation tests under laboratory conditions. The colony interference test showed that both native ant species, owing to their numerical advantage, killed the Solenopsis invicta virus-1 (SINV-1)-infected or healthy queens of S. invicta. Significantly less time was required for M. chinense to kill all SINV-1-infected S. invicta compared with the time required to kill the healthy S. invicta. Compared with healthy S. invicta, SINV-1-infected S. invicta spent a longer time eliminating the P. fervens colonies. In confrontation tests, M. chinense killed a significantly higher number of infected S. invicta minors than they did healthy minors, but the number of S. invicta majors (either infected or healthy) killed was substantially less. This study found that the viral infection weakened the competitive ability of S. invicta and made them prone to be eliminated by M. chinense but not by P. fervens.  相似文献

Australia has a range of native and introduced large herbivores that could affect the abundance of small mammals through direct and indirect effects. Here we study the relationship between occurrence of the introduced rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and the native swamp wallaby (Wallabia bicolor), and the abundance of four species of native small mammals in coastal heath vegetation with varying fire history. The abundance of two species, the brown antechinus (Antechinus stuartii) and bush rat (Rattus fuscipes), was related to occurrence of large herbivores and was dependent also on fire history. Abundance of swamp rats (R. lutreolus) and New Holland mice (Pseudomys novaehollandiae) was not related to the occurrence of any of the large herbivores, and did not depend on fire history. At sites burned within the last 9 years, captures of brown antechinus were negatively related to both deer and wallaby occurrence, and captures of bush rats were negatively related to deer occurrence. However, at sites that burned more than 15 years ago, captures of brown antechinus and bush rats were not related to large herbivore occurrence. Overall there was either no relationship, or a negative one, between small mammals and the large herbivores. This mensurative study has demonstrated relationships between deer and wallabies and small mammals, with fire as an additional important factor. From the results of the current study we put forward a series of hypotheses that need to be tested by future experiments.  相似文献

Introduced species provide an opportunity to examine responses to novel ecological conditions, in particular to the absence of co-evolved enemies. Introduced populations could evolve lower investment in resistance or could down-regulate their immune system as a plastic response to enemy absence. The response might have consequences for the success of introduced species. Assuming a trade-off between resistance and traits related to demographic success, an evolved change or reallocation from resistance could increase the chances of invasions. On the other hand, introduced populations could have increased resistance as a correlate of greater vigour and competitive ability among successful invaders [Sampling Bias hypothesis (SBH)]. These hypotheses make different predictions about investment in resistance in introduced populations. Using a New Zealand clonal snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum), we examined the resistance of three introduced genotypes (one from the US and two from Europe) to several populations of a native range parasite (Microphallus sp.). One genotype (Euro A) was resistant to all native range parasite populations, consistent with the SBH. However, two remaining genotypes (Euro C and US 1) were less susceptible to parasite populations that were allopatric to their source populations. Furthermore, resistance of one genotype (US 1) collected from the introduced range was indistinguishable from its resistance when collected from the range of the parasite. Hence, there was no evidence for decreased resistance in the absence of native enemies, which is inconsistent with hypotheses that envision reduced allocation to resistance or a trade-off between competitive ability and resistance.  相似文献

Despite growing evidence that biotic interactions limit the distribution of species and their potential redistribution under climate change, the recent surge of interest in niche conservatism has predominantly focused on the Grinellian (abiotic) niche, whereas few studies have attempted to quantify potential lability in the Eltonian (biotic or trophic) niche. Here, we test for conservatism in the Eltonian niche of 32 freshwater fish species between their introduced and native ranges from 435 populations across the globe. We used stable isotope data to quantify niche shifts along the horizontal (δ13C: indicating the origin of the resources consumed) and vertical (δ15N: describing the trophic position) dimensions of the isotopic niche, as well as shifts in overall isotopic niche breadth. Using an assemblage centroid standardized isotope vector analysis and controlling for phylogenetic relatedness among species, we demonstrated that introduced freshwater fishes exhibited flexibility in both resource use and trophic position that was beyond levels of natural variability observed in their native ranges. By contrast, niche breadth showed variability only within the limits recorded in native populations and varied independently from shifts in mean isotopic niche positions. Across all species and introduction histories, we found a consistent shift towards more balanced acquisition of resources with mixed origins and at intermediate trophic positions, suggesting a general mechanism by which fish species successfully establish into recipient communities. The mechanisms that promote or inhibit species from shifting their Eltonian niche remains unknown, but trophic flexibility is likely to contribute to both the success and the ecological impacts of invasive species and range shifts of native species under future global change.  相似文献

Density and composition of benthic invertebrates and the diet of brown trout Salmo trutta and Alpine bullhead Cottus poecilopus were studied at two sites in one Norwegian stream. The sites were separated by an impassable waterfall, and brown trout density was five to 10 times higher at the upper, allopatric site than downstream where it lived in sympatry with the Alpine bullhead. Benthic invertebrate communities did not differ between sites; however, the size distribution of chironomids and trichopterans were skewed towards lighter individuals at the sympatric site. Diet composition suggested that sympatric brown trout foraged more on invertebrate drift and from the surface than allopatric brown trout. Alpine bullhead diet did not differ significantly from brown trout diet, except that the Alpine bullhead fed on heavier individual prey within a few taxa and did not consume chironomid pupae or surface insects. The collected data support the hypothesis that brown trout living in sympatry with Alpine bullhead feed at locations with higher predation risk, which is a probable explanation for their lower population density.  相似文献

Summary Computer simulations of a pollinator foraging in a mixture of two species were used to explore how plant reproduction can be influenced by interspecific pollination movements. Interspecific pollen transfer led to strong competitive effects when availabilities of pollen, receptive stigma surfaces, or pollinator movements were limited relative to the total number of fertilizations possible in the mixed population. Results from simulations suggest that competition for pollination through interspecific pollen transfer can result in rapid exclusion of one of two species, and that such competition represents a selective force promoting stable divergence of potential competitors in habitat affinity, flowering time, or other characteristics related to pollinator sharing.  相似文献

The relationships between the concentrations of zinc, cadmium and lead in aquatic plants and the concentrations of these metals in the ambient water have been compared for three algae (Lemanea fluviatilis, Cladophora glomerata, Stigeoclonium tenue), one liverwort (Scapania undulata) and three mosses (Amblystegium riparium, Fontinalis antipyretica, Rhynchostegium riparioides). The data to establish these relationships are all based on our own studies, some published already, some here for the first time. They come from a wide range of streams and rivers in Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and the U.K. There were significant bivariate positive relationships between concentrations of Zn, Cd and Pb in water and plant for all species except Cd and Pb in Stigeoclonium tenue. When relationships were compared using datasets with total or filtrable metals in water, most differences were slight. However there were marked differences both between species and between metals. Comparison for the seven species of Zn in the plant when aqueous Zn is 0.01 mg l–1, a concentration at which all seven were found, shows that the four bryophytes had the highest concentrations; however the two green algae had steeper slopes (representing change in concentration in plant in response to change in aqueous concentration). Lemanea fluviatilis had a slope closer to that of the bryophytes, but the concentration was about one order of magnitude lower. All seven species were found at a concentration of 0.01 mg l–1 Pb, and at this concentration there were almost two orders of magnitude difference between the species which accumulated the most (Scapania undulata) and the one which accumulated the least (Cladophora glomerata). The steepest slope was however shown by C. glomerata. When multiple stepwise regression was applied, the aqueous metal under consideration was the first variable extracted in only nine of the 21 regressions. However one of the other heavy metals (aqueous or accumulated) was extracted first in all but one of the other regressions, presumably because the occurrences of Zn, Cd and Pb were strongly cross-correlated. The principal non-heavy metal factor extracted for Zn and Cd, but not Pb, was aqueous Ca. The relevance of these results to the use of aquatic plants for monitoring heavy metals is discussed.  相似文献

Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1793) were introduced to the northern Wadden Sea (North Sea, Germany) by aquaculture in 1986 and finally became established. Even though at first recruitment success was rare, three consecutive warm summers led to a massive increase in oyster abundances and to the overgrowth of native mussel beds (Mytilus edulis L.). These mussels constitute biogenic reefs on the sand and mud flats in this area. Survival and growth of the invading C. gigas were investigated and compared with the native mussels in order to predict the further development of the oyster population and the scope for coexistence of both species. Field experiments revealed high survival of juvenile C. gigas (approximately 70%) during the first three months after settlement. Survival during the first winter varied between > 90% during a mild and 25% during a cold winter and was independent of substrate (i.e., mussels or oysters) and tide level. Within their first year C. gigas reached a mean length of 35-53 mm, and within two years they grew to 68-82 mm, which is about twice the size native mussels would attain during that time. Growth of juvenile oysters was not affected by substrate (i.e., sand, mussels, and other oysters), barnacle epibionts and tide level, but was facilitated by fucoid algae. By contrast, growth of juvenile mussels was significantly higher on sand flats than on mussel or oyster beds and higher in the subtidal compared to intertidal locations. Cover with fucoid algae increased mussel growth but decreased their condition expressed as dry flesh weight versus shell weight. High survival and growth rates may compensate for years with low recruitment, and may therefore allow a fast population increase. This may lead to restrictions on habitat use by native mussels in the Wadden Sea.  相似文献

Aim Differences in phenological timing might explain why populations of the annual Lactuca serriola reach higher elevational limits in a part of its introduced range than in its native range. I investigated (1) whether this difference in elevational limits has a genetic basis, (2) the importance of clinal genetic differentiation and phenotypic plasticity in phenology as responses to elevation in L. serriola, and whether these responses differ between regions, and (3) whether the realized temperature niche of L. serriola differs between the two regions. Location Plant material was collected in Canton Valais, Switzerland (native range) and the Wallowa Mountains, Oregon, USA (introduced range). The field experiment was conducted in Canton Grisons, Switzerland. Methods Plants from 20 populations collected along elevational gradients were grown in eight common gardens established at 200‐m elevational intervals (600–2000 m a.s.l.). The timing of phenological transitions was monitored and analysed with mixed‐effects models to determine differences in (1) elevational limits, and (2) clinal genetic differentiation and phenotypic plasticity as responses to elevation for plants from each region. The limits of the species along five temperature gradients were derived from generalized linear models using published occurrence data to quantify regional differences in the realized temperature niche. Results The limit of seed set (1400 m a.s.l.) was the same for plants of both regions. However, the limit of flowering, probably a better reflection of elevational limits in this study, was 400 m higher for plants from the introduced region due to their faster development. Native populations showed clines in development time with elevation consistent with expectations. However, these were weaker in introduced populations, the responses of which were rather characterized by phenotypic plasticity. Thus, although introduced populations grow at considerably cooler sites than in the native region, this is unlikely to have resulted from direct selection for tolerance of high‐elevation conditions. Main conclusions This study supports a genetic basis for differences in the elevational limits of L. serriola populations between two parts of its native and introduced range. Although it is not yet clear whether these differences evolved in the introduced range, these findings highlight the potential of alien species for gaining insights into niche evolution.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 Removal field experiments and observational studies have been undertaken to determine whether feeding by cinnabar moth Tyria jacobaeae L. on the flower heads of ragwort Senecio jacobaea L. affects the abundance of the fly Pegohylemyia seneciella (Meade) that feeds in the flower heads as a larva.
  • 2 Correlations between the population density of cinnabar moth and the population density of the fly were suggestive of habitat separation, but provided little evidence of exploitation competition.
  • 3 Removal of cinnabar moth by hand from replicated plots over two years shows that, in years when ragwort flower production is consumed by cinnabar moth caterpillars, the fly may show no recruitment at all.
  • 4 Fly populations persist in refugia, exploiting ragwort plants that grow in areas where there are no cinnabar moth.
  • 5 Recruitment of ragwort is not seed limited, so the reduction in seed production caused by P. seneciella (maximum about 30%) has no impact on ragwort abundance, or on the abundance of cinnabar moth.
  • 6 We conclude that there is strong interspecific competition between these two species, and that the competition is highly asymmetric. The cinnabar moth had a substantial effect on the recruitment of the fly in 1986, but the fly has no measurable impact on the recruitment of the moth. In six years out of seven in our long-term study, cinnabar moth reduced flower production to levels comparable to those measured in 1986, and we infer that strong competition with the fly was likely in six years out of seven.
  • 7 One reason why there are so few published examples of asymmetric interspecific competition may be simply that the experiments are thought too obvious to be worth doing. We argue that this is not a good reason for eschewing manipulative field experiments, and that few processes in ecology are at all obvious when investigated in detail.
