The purpose of the present study was to evaluate active muscle stiffness with the stretch reflex according to changes (in 110-ms period after stretching) in torque and fascicle length during slower angular velocity (peak angular velocity of 100 deg·s−1) in comparison with active muscle stiffness without the stretch reflex (in 60-ms period after stretching) during slower and faster (peak angular velocity of 250 deg·s−1) angular velocities. Active muscle stiffness in the medial gastrocnemius muscle was calculated according to changes in estimated muscle force and fascicle length with slower and faster stretching during submaximal isometric contractions (10–90% maximal voluntary contractions). Active muscle stiffness significantly increased for both angular velocities and analyzed periods as torque levels exerted became higher. The effects of angular velocities and the interaction between angular velocities and torque levels were not significantly different between 250 deg·s−1 (in 60-ms period after stretching) and 100 deg·s−1 (in 110-ms period after stretching) conditions. The effects of the analyzed periods and the interaction between analyzed periods and torque levels were not significantly different between the analyzed periods (60-ms and 110-ms periods after stretching) for the 100 deg·s−1 condition. Furthermore, active muscle stiffness measured during the same angular velocity had significant correlations between those calculated in the different analyzed periods, whereas those under 250 deg·s−1 (60-ms period after stretching) did not correlate with those under 100 deg·s−1 (110-ms period after stretching). These results suggest that active muscle stiffness is not influenced by the stretch reflex.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the behavior of human muscle fascicles during dynamic contractions. Eight subjects performed maximal isometric dorsiflexion contractions at six ankle joint angles and maximal isokinetic concentric and eccentric contractions at five angular velocities. Tibialis anterior muscle architecture was measured in vivo by use of B-mode ultrasonography. During maximal isometric contraction, fascicle length was shorter and pennation angle larger compared with values at rest (P < 0.01). During isokinetic concentric contractions from 0 to 4.36 rad/s, fascicle length measured at a constant ankle joint angle increased curvilinearly from 49.5 to 69.7 mm (41%; P < 0.01), whereas pennation angle decreased curvilinearly from 14.8 to 9.8 degrees (34%; P < 0.01). During eccentric muscle actions, fascicles contracted quasi-isometrically, independent of angular velocity. The behavior of muscle fascicles during shortening contractions was believed to reflect the degree of stretch applied to the series elastic component, which decreases with increasing contraction velocity. The quasi-isometric behavior of fascicles during eccentric muscle actions suggests that the series elastic component acts as a mechanical buffer during active lengthening.  相似文献

During human running, the soleus, as the main plantar flexor muscle, generates the majority of the mechanical work through active shortening. The fraction of chemical energy that is converted into muscular work (enthalpy efficiency) depends on the muscle shortening velocity. Here, we investigated the soleus muscle fascicle behaviour during running with respect to the enthalpy efficiency as a mechanism that could contribute to improvements in running economy after exercise-induced increases of plantar flexor strength and Achilles tendon (AT) stiffness. Using a controlled longitudinal study design (n = 23) featuring a specific 14-week muscle–tendon training, increases in muscle strength (10%) and tendon stiffness (31%) and reduced metabolic cost of running (4%) were found only in the intervention group (n = 13, p < 0.05). Following training, the soleus fascicles operated at higher enthalpy efficiency during the phase of muscle–tendon unit (MTU) lengthening (15%) and in average over stance (7%, p < 0.05). Thus, improvements in energetic cost following increases in plantar flexor strength and AT stiffness seem attributed to increased enthalpy efficiency of the operating soleus muscle. The results further imply that the soleus energy production in the first part of stance, when the MTU is lengthening, may be crucial for the overall metabolic energy cost of running.  相似文献

Changes in the excitability of the human triceps surae muscle short latency stretch reflexes were investigated in six male subjects before and after 4 weeks of progressive two-legged hopping training. During the measurements the subjects performed 2-Hz hopping with: preferred contact time (PCT) and short contact time. The following reflex parameters were examined before and after the training period: the soleus muscle (SOL) Hoffmann-reflex (H-reflex) at rest and during hopping, the short latency electromyogram (EMG) components of the movement induced stretch reflex (MSR) in SOL and medial gastrocnemius muscle (MG), and the EMG amplitude of the SOL and MG tendon reflexes (T-reflexes) elicited at rest. The main results can be summarized as follows: the SOL T-reflex had increased by about 28% (P < 0.05) after training while the MG T-reflex was unchanged; the SOL MSR (always evident) and the MG MSR (when observable) did not change in amplitude with training, and before training the SOL H-reflex in both hopping situations was significantly depressed to about 40% of the reference value at standing rest (P < 0.05). After training the H-reflex during PCT hopping was no longer depressed. As the value of the measured mechanical parameters (the total work rate, joint angular velocity and the ankle joint work rate) was unchanged after training in both hopping situations, the reflex changes observed could not be ascribed to changes in the movement pattern. An important function of skeletal muscle is deceleration via active muscle fascicle lengthening, which dissipates movement energy. The mechanical interplay between muscle contraction and tendon elasticity is critical when muscles produce energy. However, the role of tendon elasticity during muscular energy dissipation remains unknown. We tested the hypothesis that tendon elasticity functions as a mechanical buffer, preventing high (and probably damaging) velocities and powers during active muscle fascicle lengthening. We directly measured lateral gastrocnemius muscle force and length in wild turkeys during controlled landings requiring rapid energy dissipation. Muscle-tendon unit (MTU) strain was measured via video kinematics, independent of muscle fascicle strain (measured via sonomicrometry). We found that rapid MTU lengthening immediately following impact involved little or no muscle fascicle lengthening. Therefore, joint flexion had to be accommodated by tendon stretch. After the early contact period, muscle fascicles lengthened and absorbed energy. This late lengthening occurred after most of the joint flexion, and was thus mainly driven by tendon recoil. Temporary tendon energy storage led to a significant reduction in muscle fascicle lengthening velocity and the rate of energy absorption. We conclude that tendons function as power attenuators that probably protect muscles against damage from rapid and forceful lengthening during energy dissipation.  相似文献

Objectives:Whole-body vibration (WBV) is applied to the sole of the foot, whereas local mechanical vibration (LMV) is applied directly to the muscle or tendon. The time required for the mechanical stimulus to reach the muscle belly is longer for WBV. Therefore, the WBV-induced muscular reflex (WBV-IMR) latency may be longer than the tonic vibration reflex (TVR) latency. The aim of this study was to determine whether the difference between WBV-IMR and TVR latencies is due to the distance between the vibration application point and the target muscle.Methods:Eight volunteers participated in this study. The soleus reflex response was recorded during WBV, LMVs, and tendon tap. LMVs were applied to the Achilles tendon and sole of the foot. The latencies were calculated using the cumulative averaging technique.Results:The latency (33.4±2.8 ms) of the soleus reflex induced by the local foot vibration was similar to the soleus TVR latency (30.9±3.2 ms) and T-reflex (32.0±2.4 ms) but significantly shorter than the latency of the soleus WBV-IMR (42.3±3.4 ms) (F(3,21)=27.46, p=0.0001, partial η2=0.797).Conclusions:The present study points out that the neuronal circuitries of TVR and WBV-IMR are different.  相似文献

Stretch reflex shows sustained (3-min) increase with heightened sympathetic outflow [Hjortskov N, Skotte J, Hye-Knudsen C, Fallentin N. Sympathetic outflow enhances the stretch reflex response in the relaxed soleus muscle in humans. J Appl Physiol 2005;98:1366–70], but it is unknown if it accompanies a sustained increase in H-reflex. The purpose of the study was to test if there is a sustained facilitation in the H-reflex in the human soleus muscle during a variety of sustained tasks that are known to elevate sympathetic outflow. Mean arterial blood pressure, heart rate, and H- and stretch reflexes in the relaxed soleus muscle were obtained in healthy young adults who performed mental arithmetic, static handgrip exercise, post-handgrip ischemia, and cold stimulation. Each task lasted 3 min with a 3-min rest in between tasks. Data were analyzed for the initial 30 s and entire 3 min of each task. There was a heightened cardiovascular response in all tasks for both durations of analysis. An increase in H-reflex amplitude was not observed for either the initial or entire duration of the analysis. The tasks increased stretch reflex amplitude for both durations of analysis. Invariable H-reflex and sustained facilitation of stretch reflex with heightened sympathetic outflow would imply sympathetic modulation of muscle spindle sensitivity.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to test whether the spinal reflex excitability of the soleus muscle is modulated as posture changes from a supine to a passive upright position. Eight healthy subjects (29.6 ± 5.4 yrs) participated in this study. Stretch and H-reflex responses were elicited while the subjects maintained passive standing (ST) and supine (SP) postures. The passive standing posture was accomplished by using a gait orthosis to which a custom-made device was mounted to elicit stretch reflex in the soleus muscle. This orthosis makes it possible to elicit stretch and H-reflexes without background muscle activity in the soleus muscle. The results revealed that the H-reflex amplitude in the ST was smaller than that in the SP condition, which is in good agreement with previous reports. On the other hand, the stretch reflex was significantly larger in the ST than in the SP condition. Since the experimental conditions of both the stretch and H-reflex measurements were exactly the same, the results were attributed to differences in the underlying neural mechanisms of the two reflex systems: different sensitivity of the presynaptic inhibition onto the spinal motoneuron pool and/or a change in the muscle spindle sensitivity.  相似文献

Purpose: To determine vibration parameters affecting the amplitude of the reflex activity of soleus muscle during low-amplitude whole-body vibration (WBV).

Materials and methods: This study was conducted on 19 participants. Vibration frequencies of 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50?Hz were used. Surface electromyography, collision force between vibration platform and participant’s heel measured using a force sensor, and acceleration measured using an accelerometer fixed to the vibration platform were simultaneously recorded.

Results: The collision force was the main independent predictor of electromyographic amplitude.

Conclusion: The essential parameter of vibration affecting the amplitude of the reflex muscle activity is the collision force.  相似文献

Effects of moment arm length on kinetic outputs of a musculoskeletal system (muscle force development, joint moment development, joint power output and joint work output) were evaluated using computer simulation. A skeletal system of the human ankle joint was constructed: a lower leg segment and a foot segment were connected with a hinge joint. A Hill-type model of the musculus soleus (m. soleus), consisting of a contractile element and a series elastic element, was attached to the skeletal system. The model of the m. soleus was maximally activated, while the ankle joint was plantarflexed/dorsiflexed at a variation of constant angular velocities, simulating isokinetic exercises on a muscle testing machine. Profiles of the kinetic outputs (muscle force development, joint moment development, joint power output and joint work output) were obtained. Thereafter, the location of the insertion of the m. soleus was shifted toward the dorsal/ventral direction by 1cm, which had an effect of lengthening/shortening the moment arm length, respectively. The kinetic outputs of the musculoskeletal system during the simulated isokinetic exercises were evaluated with these longer/shorter moment arm lengths. It was found that longer moment arm resulted in smaller joint moment development, smaller joint power output and smaller joint work output in the larger plantarflexion angular velocity region (>120 degrees/s). This is because larger muscle shortening velocity was required with longer moment arm to achieve a certain joint angular velocity. Larger muscle shortening velocity resulted in smaller muscle force development because of the force-velocity relation of the muscle. It was suggested that this phenomenon should be taken into consideration when investigating the joint moment-joint angle and/or joint moment-joint angular velocity characteristics of experimental data.  相似文献

At rest, the H-reflex is lower during lengthening than shortening actions. During passive lengthening, both soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) H-reflex amplitudes decrease with increasing angular velocity. This study was designed to investigate whether H-reflex amplitude is affected by angular velocity during concentric and eccentric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Experiments were performed on nine healthy men. At a constant angular velocity of 60°/s and 20°/s, maximal H-reflex and M-wave potentials were evoked at rest (i.e., Hmax and Mmax, respectively) and during concentric and eccentric MVC (i.e., Hsup and Msup, respectively). Regardless of the muscle, Hmax/Mmax was lower during lengthening than shortening actions and the Hsup/Msup ratio was higher than Hmax/Mmax during lengthening actions. Whereas no action type and angular velocity effects on the MG Hsup/Msup were found, the SOL Hsup/Msup was lower during eccentric than concentric MVC and this depression was increased with higher angular velocity. Our findings indicate that the depression of the H-reflex amplitude during eccentric compared to concentric MVC depends mainly on the amount of inhibition induced by lengthening action. In conclusion, H-reflex should be evoked during both passive and active dynamic trials to evaluate the plasticity of the spinal loop.  相似文献

The aim of the current study was to investigate potential age-related differences in neural regulation strategies during maximal and sub-maximal hopping. Thirty-two boys from three different age groups (9-, 12- and 15-years), completed trials of both maximal and sub maximal hopping, and based on contact and flight times, measures of reactive strength index (RSI = jump height/contact time) and leg stiffness (peak ground reaction force/peak displacement of centre of mass) were collected respectively. During all trials, surface electromyograms (EMG) were recorded from four different muscle sites of the dominant lower limb, during 100 ms pre-ground contact, and then four subsequent stretch reflex phases: background muscle activity (0-30 ms), short-latency stretch reflex (31-60 ms), intermediate15 latency stretch reflex 61-90 ms and long-latency stretch reflex (91-120 ms). Reactive strength index and leg stiffness were measured during the hopping trials. During maximal hopping, both 12- and 15-year olds produced significantly greater RSI (P < 0.02) than 9-year olds, with 15-year olds utilising significantly greater soleus muscle activity during the 100 ms prior to ground contact than the younger age groups (P < 0.01). During sub-maximal hopping, 15-year olds produced significantly greater absolute leg stiffness than both 12- and 9-year olds (P < 0.01), with 9-year olds producing significantly less soleus muscle activity during the 31-60 ms time phase. For all age groups, sub-maximal hopping was associated with significantly greater background muscle activity and short-latency stretch reflex activity in the soleus and vastus lateralis, when compared to maximal hopping (P < 0.001). Results suggest that as children mature, they become more reliant on supra-spinal feed forward input and short latency stretch reflexes to regulate greater levels of leg stiffness and RSI when hopping.  相似文献

Animal experiments suggest that an increase in sympathetic outflow can depress muscle spindle sensitivity and thus modulate the stretch reflex response. The results are, however, controversial, and human studies have failed to demonstrate a direct influence of the sympathetic nervous system on the sensitivity of muscle spindles. We studied the effect of increased sympathetic outflow on the short-latency stretch reflex in the soleus muscle evoked by tapping the Achilles tendon. Nine subjects performed three maneuvers causing a sustained activation of sympathetic outflow to the leg: 3 min of static handgrip exercise at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction, followed by 3 min of posthandgrip ischemia, and finally during a 3-min mental arithmetic task. Electromyography was measured from the soleus muscle with bipolar surface electrodes during the Achilles tendon tapping, and beat-to-beat changes in heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure were monitored continuously. Mean arterial pressure was significantly elevated during all three maneuvers, whereas heart rate was significantly elevated during static handgrip exercise and mental arithmetic but not during posthandgrip ischemia. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the short-latency stretch reflex was significantly increased during mental arithmetic (P < 0.05), static handgrip exercise (P < 0.001), and posthandgrip ischemia (P < 0.005). When expressed in percent change from rest, the mean peak-to-peak amplitude increased by 111 (SD 100)% during mental arithmetic, by 160 (SD 103)% during static handgrip exercise, and by 90 (SD 67)% during posthandgrip ischemia. The study clearly indicates a facilitation of the short-latency stretch reflex during increased sympathetic outflow. We note that the enhanced stretch reflex responses observed in relaxed muscles in the absence of skeletomotor activity support the idea that the sympathetic nervous system can exert a direct influence on the human muscle spindles.  相似文献

During human walking, plantar flexor activation in late stance helps to generate a stable and economical gait pattern. Because plantar flexor activation is highly mediated by proprioceptive feedback, the nervous system must modulate reflex pathways to meet the mechanical requirements of gait. The purpose of this study was to quantify ankle joint mechanical output of the plantar flexor stretch reflex response during a novel unexpected gait perturbation. We used a robotic ankle exoskeleton to mechanically amplify the ankle torque output resulting from soleus muscle activation. We recorded lower-body kinematics, ground reaction forces, and electromyography during steady-state walking and during randomly perturbed steps when the exoskeleton assistance was unexpectedly turned off. We also measured soleus Hoffmann- (H-) reflexes at late stance during the two conditions. Subjects reacted to the unexpectedly decreased exoskeleton assistance by greatly increasing soleus muscle activity about 60 ms after ankle angle deviated from the control condition (p<0.001). There were large differences in ankle kinematic and electromyography patterns for the perturbed and control steps, but the total ankle moment was almost identical for the two conditions (p=0.13). The ratio of soleus H-reflex amplitude to background electromyography was not significantly different between the two conditions (p=0.4). This is the first study to show that the nervous system chooses reflex responses during human walking such that invariant ankle joint moment patterns are maintained during perturbations. Our findings are particularly useful for the development of neuromusculoskeletal computer simulations of human walking that need to adjust reflex gains appropriately for biomechanical analyses.  相似文献

Aim

To investigate whether there is a sex difference in exercise induced muscle damage.

Materials and Method

Vastus Lateralis and patella tendon properties were measured in males and females using ultrasonography. During maximal voluntary eccentric knee extensions (12 reps x 6 sets), Vastus Lateralis fascicle lengthening and maximal voluntary eccentric knee extensions torque were recorded every 10° of knee joint angle (20–90°). Isometric torque, Creatine Kinase and muscle soreness were measured pre, post, 48, 96 and 168 hours post damage as markers of exercise induced muscle damage.

Results

Patella tendon stiffness and Vastus Lateralis fascicle lengthening were significantly higher in males compared to females (p<0.05). There was no sex difference in isometric torque loss and muscle soreness post exercise induced muscle damage (p>0.05). Creatine Kinase levels post exercise induced muscle damage were higher in males compared to females (p<0.05), and remained higher when maximal voluntary eccentric knee extension torque, relative to estimated quadriceps anatomical cross sectional area, was taken as a covariate (p<0.05).

Conclusion

Based on isometric torque loss, there is no sex difference in exercise induced muscle damage. The higher Creatine Kinase in males could not be explained by differences in maximal voluntary eccentric knee extension torque, Vastus Lateralis fascicle lengthening and patella tendon stiffness. Further research is required to understand the significant sex differences in Creatine Kinase levels following exercise induced muscle damage.  相似文献

Ultrasonography was used to directly measure in vivo fascicle behavior of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) and soleus (SOL) muscles while the subjects (n=6 men) performed maximal voluntary concentric and eccentric plantar flexions at 60, 120, 180 and 240 deg/s. Fascicle shortening and lengthening velocities of MG, obtained from fascicle length changes over time, were significantly higher than those of SOL at +/-120, +/-180 and +240 deg/s, possibly reflecting physiological and mechanical differences between these muscles. On the other hand, the effective fascicle shortening and lengthening velocities, defined as the velocities in the longitudinal direction of muscle belly, were not significantly different between MG and SOL. This could be due to difference in fascicle architecture and/or the existence of mechanical linkages between these muscles. Moreover, when the contribution of tendinous tissues to muscle-tendon complex length change was determined from fascicle length, pennation angle, moment arm and joint angle, it accounted for approximately 50% in both concentric and eccentric trials, but showed considerable intra-subject variations. This result quantifiably demonstrates the importance of tendinous tissues in isokinetically controlled joint movements.  相似文献

In humans, an inhibitory via Ia afferent pathway from the medial gastrocnemius (MG) to the soleus (SOL) motoneuron pool has been suggested. Herein, we examined the relation between MG fascicle length changes and the SOL H-reflex modulation during passive knee movement. Twelve subjects performed static and passive (5° s?1) knee movement tasks with the ankle immobilized using an isokinetic dynamometer in sitting posture. The maximal H- and M-waves were measured at four target angles (20°, 40°, 60°, and 80° flexion from full knee extension). The MG fascicles length and velocity were measured using a B-mode ultrasonic apparatus. Results demonstrated that the SOL Hmax/Mmax; i.e., ratio of the maximal H- to M-waves, was attenuated with increasing MG fascicle length in static tasks. The SOL Hmax/Mmax at 20° was significantly attenuated compared with 60° and 80° with increasing MG fascicle length and lengthening velocity in passive knee extension. However, no significant differences in the SOL Hmax/Mmax were found across the target angles in the passive knee flexion task. In conclusion, as muscle spindles increase their discharge with lengthening fascicle velocity, but keep silent when fascicles shorten, our data suggest that lengthening the MG facilitates an inhibitory Ia pathway from MG to SOL, and modulates SOL motoneuron activity during movements.  相似文献

To determine the shortening velocities of fascicles of the vastus lateralis muscle (VL) during isokinetic knee extension, six male subjects were requested to extend the knee with maximal effort at angular velocities of 30 and 150 degrees /s. By using an ultrasonic apparatus, longitudinal images of the VL were produced every 30 ms during knee extension, and the fascicle length and angle of pennation were obtained from these images. The shortening fascicle length with extension of the knee (from 98 to 13 degrees of knee angle; full extension = 0 degrees ) was greater (43 mm) at 30 degrees /s than at 150 degrees /s (35 mm). Even when the angular velocity remained constant during the isokinetic range of motion, the fascicle velocity was found to change from 39 to 77 mm/s at 150 degrees /s and from 6 to 19 mm/s at 30 degrees /s. The force exerted by a fascicle changed with the length of the fascicle at changing angular velocities. The peak values of fascicle force and velocity were observed at approximately 90 mm of fascicle length. In conclusion, even if the angular velocity of knee extension is kept constant, the shortening velocity of a fascicle is dependent on the force applied to the muscle-tendon complex, and the phenomenon is considered to be caused mainly by the elongation of the elastic element (tendinous tissue).  相似文献

The spinal stretch reflex (SSR) is commonly assessed via electromyographic (EMG) analysis of joint perturbations inducing changes in muscle length. Previous literature indicates that when large experimental changes in magnitude of agonist background EMG, perturbation velocity, and perturbation amplitude are employed, SSR latency and amplitude are significantly altered. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the relative dependence of SSR latency and amplitude on inherent variability in these experimental variables. Soleus SSR latency and amplitude were assessed in 40 healthy subjects following dorsiflexion perturbation under an active state ( approximately 14% MVC). Experimental variables displayed limited variability (means +/- SD): soleus background EMG (13.47 +/- 7.08% MVC), perturbation velocity (96.1 +/- 30 degrees /s), and perturbation amplitude (4 +/- 1 degrees ). SSR latency was not significantly related to soleus background EMG (r = 0.189), perturbation velocity (r = 0.213), or perturbation amplitude (r = 0.202). Similarly, SSR amplitude was not significantly related to soleus background EMG (r = 0.306), perturbation velocity (r = 0.053), or perturbation amplitude (r = 0.056). Variability in experimental variables was much smaller than what has been reported in the literature to significantly impact SSR characteristics. These results suggest that SSR latency and amplitude are independent of agonist background EMG, perturbation velocity, and perturbation amplitude when experimental variability is relatively limited.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the moment generation of the human plantar flexors and the architecture of the gastrocnemius medialis muscle during and after shortening–stretch cycles in vivo. Fourteen male subjects (30 ± 7 years, 177 ± 7 cm, 80 ± 9 kg) performed a series of electro-stimulated shortening–stretch plantar flexion contractions. The shortening–stretch cycles were performed at three constant angular velocities (25°/s, 50°/s, 100°/s), two amplitudes (15° and 25° ankle angle changes) and at two different stimulation frequencies (30 Hz and 85 Hz). The resultant ankle joint moments were calculated through inverse dynamics. Pennation angle and fascicle length of the m. gastrocnemius medialis at rest and during contractions were measured using ultrasonography. The corresponding ankle moments, kinematics and changes in muscle architecture were analysed at seven time intervals. A three-way analysis of variance (amplitude × velocity × stimulation frequency) and post-hoc test with Bonferroni correction were used to check the amplitude, velocity and stimulation level related effects on moment enhancement (α = 0.05). The results show an ankle joint moment enhancement after shortening–stretch cycles influenced by muscle architectural changes. We found 2–3% isometric ankle joint moment enhancement at steady state, 1.5–2.0 s after the shortening–stretch cycle. However, the observed alteration in muscle architecture after the imposed perturbation, could lead to an underestimation (1–3%) of joint moment enhancement due to the force–length relationship of the triceps surae. Furthermore, the enhancement observed was independent of the shortening–stretch amplitude, velocity and stimulation frequency.  相似文献
