In a benthic community on a continuous flat granite substrate in a third-order coastal forest stream, the dominant chironomid (Cricotopus) increased in number when shrimps (Macrobrachium olfersi and Potimirim glabra) and baetid ephemeropterans were excluded by electricity. The response appeared to be mediated by an increase in periphyton and sediments, rather than a reduction of direct predation or interference. Chironomids, periphyton and sediments decreased significantly compared to the control when shrimps only were excluded. Baetid ephemeropteran appeared to be the most important determinants of periphyton and sediment mass; the density of chironomids appeared to follow the quantity of periphyton and sediments.  相似文献

1. Two in situ experiments investigated the responses to artificially increased sediment loads of the gastropod and fish communities, and of the whole benthos, of the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika. Sediments were emptied once onto randomly selected quadrats using SCUBA, with control quadrats receiving no addition of sediment. Quadrats were monitored up to 6 months after sediment addition. 2. While the abundance of Lavigeria grandis (Mollusca; Gastropoda) was reduced greatly by the addition of sediment, low abundance and biomass of the whole gastropod community on sediment‐impacted quadrats 6 months after sediment addition suggests more general impacts of inundation in the longer term. 3. Benthic invertebrate communities inundated by sediment had significantly fewer individuals and numbers of taxa than control communities. No significant community recovery was recorded on sediment‐impacted quadrats within the timescale of the experiment. A short‐term period of high turbidity brought about by the emptying of sediments onto sediment‐impacted quadrats also caused severe decreases in benthic invertebrate abundance on controls 10 days after sediment addition. This suggests that even short‐term pulses of sediment may have significant detrimental effects on littoral communities. 4. Although significant impacts of sediment on fish community dynamics were found, and a significant reduction in the number of benthic algivorous species was recorded immediately after sediment addition, littoral fish communities showed strong resistance overall to the addition of sediments. This apparent resistance, however, may be a consequence of the small scale at which the experiment took place. Littoral fish communities were also shown to be more dynamic than indicated previously.  相似文献

1. We asked whether unionid mussels influence the distribution and abundance of co‐occurring benthic algae and invertebrates. In a yearlong field enclosure experiment in a south‐central U.S. river, we examined the effects of living mussels versus sham mussels (shells filled with sand) on periphyton and invertebrates in both the surrounding sediment and on mussel shells. We also examined differences between two common unionid species, Actinonaias ligamentina (Lamarck 1819) and Amblema plicata (Say 1817). 2. Organic matter concentrations and invertebrate densities in the sediment surrounding mussels were significantly higher in treatments with live mussels than treatments with sham mussels or sediment alone. Organic matter was significantly higher in the sediment surrounding Actinonaias than that surrounding Amblema. Actinonaias was more active than Amblema and may have increased benthic organic matter through bioturbation. 3. Living mussels increased the abundance of periphyton on shells and the abundance and richness of invertebrates on shells, whereas effects of sham mussels were similar to sediment alone. Differences in the amount of periphyton growing on the shells of the two mussel species reflected differences in mussel activity and shell morphology. 4. Differences between living and sham mussel treatments indicate that biological activities of mussels provide ecosystem services to the benthic community beyond the physical habitat provided by shells alone. In treatments containing live mussels we found significant correlations between organic matter and chlorophyll a concentrations in the sediment, organic matter concentrations and invertebrate abundance in the sediment and the amount of chlorophyll a on the sediment and invertebrate abundance. There were no significant correlations among these response variables in control treatments. Thus, in addition to providing biogenic structure as habitat, mussels likely facilitate benthic invertebrates by altering the availability of resources (algae and organic matter) through nutrient excretion and biodeposition. 5. Effects of mussels on sediment and shell periphyton concentrations, organic matter concentrations and invertebrate abundance, varied seasonally, and were strongest in late summer during periods of low water volume, low flow, and high water temperature. 6. Our study demonstrates that freshwater mussels can strongly influence the co‐occurring benthic community, but that effects of mussels are context‐dependent and may vary among species.  相似文献

Freshwater shrimp dominate the faunal biomass of many headwater tropical streams: however, their role in community organization is unclear. Enclosure/exclosure experiments in a montane Puerto Rican stream examined direct and indirect effects of two dominant taxa of atyid (Atyidae) shrimp, Atya lanipes Holthuis and Xiphocaris elongata Guerin-Meneville. Both shrimp taxa caused significant reductions in sediment cover on rock substrata, reducing sedimentation and enhancing algal biovolume on clay tiles in cages. When tiles incubated in shrimp exclosures for 2 wks were placed outside of cages, atyid shrimp removed 100% of the sediment cover within a 30 min observation period. Atyid shrimp appear to play an important role in stream recovery after high discharge events by rapidly removing sediments and detritus deposited on benthic substrata in pools. We evaluated the mechanism by which A. lanipes influences algae and benthic insects by comparing patterns of algal biomass, taxonomic composition, and insect abundance between shrimp-exclusion and shrimp-presence treatments both with and without manual sediment removal. The shrimp exclusion treatment without manual sediment removal bad significantly lower algal biomass and greater sedimentation than all other treatments. The treatment in which shrimp were excluded but sediment was manually removed, however, accrued almost the same algal biovolume as the shrimp enclosure treatment, supporting the hypothesis that sediment removal enhances the biovolume of understory algal taxa. Algal community composition was similar between stream bottom bedrock exposed to natural densities of shrimp and all experimental treatments for both Atya and Xiphocaris: a diatom community strongly dominated (78–95%) by the adnate taxon, Achnanthes lanceolata Breb ex. Kutz. Atyid shrimp are important in determining the distribution and abundance of benthic insects through both direct and indirect effects. Sessile, retreat-building chironomid larvae (Chironomidae: Diptera) are negatively affected by both A. lanipes and X. elongata, through direct removal by foraging activities and/or indirectly through depression of sediment resources available to larvae for the construction of retreats. In constrast, the mobile grazer, Cloeodes maculipes (Baetidae: Ephemeroptera) was not adversely affected and atyid shrimp have the potential to exert positive indirect effects on this taxon by facilitating its exploitation of algal resources and/or through enhancement of understory algal food resources through sediment removal.  相似文献

Abstract The response of a sediment microbial assemblage to a pulse of diatoms was studied over 36 days by measuring bacterial activity and biomass, ATP concentration, and overall community respiration in laboratory microcosms. Also, the contribution of macrofaunal chironomids to the decomposition of settling diatoms in benthic communities, and the relative importance of benthic meiofauna in community metabolism, were determined. The addition of diatoms resulted in an immediate response by sediment bacteria, with higher bacterial production recorded after only 2 h, and a more than tenfold increase within one day. The rapid response by sediment bacteria was accompanied by relatively high initial concentrations of dissolved organic carbon. In treatments receiving diatoms, higher bacterial production was sustained throughout the experiment. Surprisingly, neither these elevated production estimates, nor the starvation of controls affected bacterial abundance. Mean bacterial cell volume, however, was markedly affected by the addition of diatoms. Combining community respiration measurements and bacterial production estimates showed that growth efficiencies for sediment bacteria ranged from 14.6 to 34.5%. The contribution of ambient meiozoobenthos to carbon metabolism was less than 1%. Carbon budgets showed that 1.3 mg C was cooxidized along with 4.3 mg added diatom C. Sediment reworking by Chironomus larvae initially enhanced bacterial production, but the presence of Chironomus resulted in lower bacterial production estimates after 16 and 36 days. This was interpreted as a result of faster decomposition of diatoms in treatments with chironomids, which was validated by a faster decline of ATP and chlorophyll a in the sediment. Our results indicate that Chironomus larvae compete with sediment bacteria for available organic substrates. Received: 11 June 1996; Accepted: 13 August 1996  相似文献

Relationships between phytoplankton and periphyton communities were investigated in a central Iowa stream. Results generally support the hypothesis that the phytoplankton community arises from the epipelic periphyton community. A high correlation existed between the proportion of benthic diatoms composing the epipelon and phytoplankton. One dominant epipelic species (Nitzschia acicularis) showed a greater tendency to become planktonic than the grouped remainder of Nitzschia spp. There was a significant inverse relationship between the proportion of centric diatoms in the plankton and volume of flow. Centric diatoms were important members of the plankton only when volume of flow was less than 60 ft3 / sec (2.1 m3 / sec). Possible mechanisms explaining these phenomena are discussed. This study represents a portion of a dissertation submitted to the Graduate College, Iowa State University in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy.  相似文献

1. Macrobrachium hainanense is a large predatory palaemonid shrimp, present at high densities in pools of low‐order forested streams in Hong Kong. The present study investigated the impacts of M. hainanense on benthic community structure and functions in pools of two streams: Tai Po Kau Forest Stream and Tai Shing Stream. 2. Repeated whole‐pool experiments involving shrimp density manipulations (removal, control and addition) were conducted in both streams between October 2000 and April 2002, and included a wet (May to September) and two dry (October to April) seasons. The three objectives of the study were to determine the effects of M. hainanense predation on benthic macroinvertebrate abundance and species richness, rates of leaf litter breakdown because of effects on detritivores, and periphyton standing stocks by way of an effect on herbivores. 3. Wet season results showed consistent reductions in benthos densities and species richness following heavy rainfall, irrespective of shrimp manipulation. These results suggested that spate‐induced disturbances might override biotic effects and play a dominant role in structuring benthic communities in stream pools in Hong Kong. 4. No significant, reproducible effects on any of the response variables measured in either stream were found during the dry season. Litter breakdown was reduced in the absence of shrimps during one experiment only, suggesting it might be a type I error. These results signified no effect of shrimp removal on benthic communities, or on the functional processes of litter breakdown, or on periphyton accumulation. The large scale of the experimental units (8–40 m2), refuge availability, and the presence of benthic predatory fishes that cropped excess prey made available by removal of M. hainanense, may have contributed to the lack of any effect, despite the abundance of the predatory shrimps.  相似文献

1. The effects of omnivorous exotic species on native communities are often difficult to predict because of the broad diets and behavioural flexibility of the omnivore, and the diverse abiotic and biotic characteristics of invaded systems. We investigated experimentally the effects of a gradient of density of the introduced, omnivorous red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Decapoda: Cambaridae) on two stream communities in southern California, U.S.A. 2. The Ventura River is a clear, flowing stream with a cobble substratum, with abundant algae but low densities of large invertebrates, small herbivores and snails. The Santa Ynez River at the time of the study consisted of a series of drying pools underlain by sand, with abundant charophytes, large predatory invertebrates and herbivores, including snails. 3. In the Ventura River, periphyton biomass and inorganic sediment decreased with increasing crayfish abundance, but in the Santa Ynez River, periphyton and sediment were unrelated to crayfish densities. 4. In the Ventura River, the biomass and density of all benthic invertebrates combined, chironomids, micropredators, the meiofauna (chydorid cladocerans, copepods and ostracods), and specific predatory and herbivorous taxa, as well as taxon richness, were negatively related to crayfish density. In the Santa Ynez River, the biomass and average body size of benthic invertebrates, predatory invertebrates, herbivores and chironomids, but not total invertebrate density or taxon richness, were negatively related to crayfish density. 5. Fewer large predatory invertebrates and snails (Physella gyrina) in both streams, and baetid mayflies in the Ventura River, were visible at night in channels where crayfish were abundant. Snails responded to crayfish by moving above the water line in the Santa Ynez River, but not in the Ventura River. 6. We suggest that the same omnivore had different effects on these neighbouring streams because of crayfish predation on large invertebrates in the Santa Ynez River and the scarcity of such prey in the Ventura River, leading to increased crayfish grazing on periphyton, and reductions in periphyton‐associated invertebrates, in the Ventura River.  相似文献

1. In tropical island stream ecosystems freshwater shrimps are often the dominant macroconsumers and can play an important role in determining benthic community composition. However, most studies of the ecological role of shrimps are limited to high‐altitude shrimp‐dominated sites where other biota (fishes and snails) are absent or significantly less abundant than at lower altitudes. 2. We examined how effects of different shrimp assemblages on benthic communities changed along an altitudinal gradient in a tropical island stream in Puerto Rico. We used electroshocking and observations to quantify abundance and taxonomic composition of shrimp assemblages at three sites (300, 90 and 10 m a. s. l) along the Río Espíritu Santo. We also experimentally manipulated access of shrimps to the benthic environment simultaneously at each site using electric fences over a 35‐day period. 3. At the high‐altitude site, exclusion of shrimps (predominantly Atya spp. and Xiphocariselongata) resulted in significantly greater accrual of organic and inorganic material, chlorophyll a and algal biovolume. In the absence of shrimps, the algal community was dominated by filamentous green algae (Chlorophyta: Oedogonium and Rhizoclonium). Excluding shrimps did not affect total insect biomass but significantly increased sessile chironomids (Diptera: Chironomidae). We observed similar treatment effects at the mid‐altitude site where shrimps (primarily Macrobrachium spp. and X. elongata) occurred at lower densities. In contrast, at the low‐altitude site there were no treatment differences in organic and inorganic material, chlorophyll a, algal biovolume, algal assemblage composition and insects. 4. The lack of treatment differences at the low‐altitude site was probably because of very high densities of grazing snails (Thiaragranifera and Neritina spp.) which reduced organic and inorganic resources and obscured potential shrimp effects. 5. This study demonstrates that freshwater shrimps can play an important role in determining benthic community composition; however, their effects vary and appear to depend on the presence of other biota. This study suggests that loss of shrimps as a result of anthropogenic disturbances will have different effects on the stream community depending upon location along the altitude gradient.  相似文献

Microphytoplankton populations were studied in shallow coastal water (<60 m) near the Brazilian Antarctic Station Comandante Ferraz (EACF) and three reference areas in Admiralty Bay in early and late summer (2002–2003). Phytoplankton was diverse (113 taxa), but not abundant (103 cells l−1). The highest abundances (>104 cells l−1) were caused by pennate benthic diatoms (Fragilaria striatula Lyngbye) that occurred mainly in early summer, associated with the presence of ice. In late summer, when the water temperature (−0.4 to 1.5°C), salinity (34 to 35), and phosphate (2.6 to 4.5 μmol l−1) were highest and the dissolved oxygen was lowest (6.4 to 2.9 ml l−1), centric diatoms (Thalassiosira spp.) were more abundant, suggesting an influence of oceanic waters. Phytoplankton abundance (≤102 cells l−1) and chlorophyll a concentrations (0.22 μg l−1) were lowest close to EACF. Pennate diatoms were dominant close to shore and in surface waters elsewhere, probably because of ice melting or sediment resuspension caused by water mixing.  相似文献

Rapidly deposited Thalassionema-Thalassiothrix pennate diatom oozes previously have been described in Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene sediment beneath the frontal boundary of the eastern equatorial Pacific. Here we document a new occurrence of Thalassionema-Thalassiothrix ooze in Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene sediment beneath the frontal boundary of the subarctic North Pacific. The ooze is a 6 m interval of siliceous sediment at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites 885/886 that was rapidly deposited between approximately 5.0 and 5.9 Ma. Bulk sediment in this interval may contain greater than 85% pennate diatom tests. There are also abundant laminae and pockets that are composed entirely of Thalassionema and Thalassiothrix diatoms. The presence of a rapidly deposited ooze dominated by pennate diatoms indicates unusual past conditions in the overlying surface waters. Time coincident deposition of such oozes at two distinct frontal boundary locations of the Pacific suggests that the unusual surface water conditions were causally linked to large-scale oceanographic change. This same oceanographic change most likely involved (1) addition of nutrients to the ocean, or (2) redistribution of nutrients within the ocean. The occurrence and origin of pennate diatom oozes may be a key component to an integrative understanding of late Neogene paleoceanography and biogeochemical cycling.  相似文献

1. Atyid (Decapoda: Atyidae) shrimps influence the distribution of algal communities over different scales in tropical montane streams of Puerto Rico. Within pools of an atyid-dominated stream, atyid shrimps enhanced patchiness in algal communities along the depth gradient. Algal bands occurred in shallow pool margins where atyids did not forage (< 3 cm below water surface), with significantly greater standing crop, taxon richness, and structural complexity than deeper areas. In deeper water, atyids reduced small-scale patchiness in algal community composition and maintained a low-growing understorey turf dominated by sessile diatoms (Bacillariophyta) and, sometimes, closely cropped, filamentous blue-greens (Cyanophyta).
2. Among pools of the atyid-dominated stream, atyids interacted with light to determine algal patchiness between stream margins and deeper areas. In sunny pools, algal standing crop was 140-fold greater in pool margins than in deeper areas where atyids foraged. In shaded pools, however, standing crop in pool margins was only 5-fold greater than in deeper areas. Effects of light on algal standing crop were greater outside atyid foraging areas than within, indicating that shrimp grazing overrides the positive effects of light.
3. In contrast to the atyid-dominated stream, algal communities in an atyid-poor stream were characterized by a high biomass of loosely attached epipelic diatoms and no depth zonation. Interstream rock and shrimp transplant experiments indicated that atyids significantly reduced algal standing crop and altered community composition on rocks from atyid-poor streams within 24 h. Results support the hypothesis that atyid shrimps play a major role in determining observed interstream differences in algal communities.  相似文献

Variation of polysaccharide concentration in irrigation-channel sediment was determined concurrently with biological, chemical and physical factors influencing the benthic algal community. Phenol-sulphuric acid method was used to measure polysaccharide concentration. Polysaccharide concentration, biomass of benthic algae, and species composition changed spatially and temporally. Fluctuations of total suspended solid (TSS) concentration and exposure of channel bed to direct sunlight had major effects on algal growth and polysaccharide production. Polysaccharide concentration was correlated to chlorophyll a concentration (r=0.73, P<0.001) and algal biomass (r=0.57, P<0.001). Fragilaria construens and Aulacoseira (Melosira) italica were the most common diatoms in the benthic flora. Chlorophyll a concentration in the sediment showed a strong negative correlation (r=-0.99, P<0.001) with the seasonal variation of TSS concentration in channel water. The polysaccharides produced by benthic microorganisms play a major role in clogging channel bed and thereby reducing seepage from earthen irrigation channels. Correlations between polysaccharide concentration and chlorophyll a (and algal biomass) further indicate the importance of benthic algae for polysaccharide production. Since availability of light to the algal flora is critical for the production of polysaccharides, the effect of clogging can be maximized by exposing the channel bed to direct sunlight during non-irrigation period (winter).  相似文献

Eastern mud snails, Ilyanassa obsoleta (Say), in densities of 0, 80, and 160 snails · m?2 were placed in flow-through laboratory microcosms containing 5 cm of frozen and sieved sediments. Other microcosms were raked once daily to a depth of 10 mm. All these containers were incubated for 5 wk and regularly sampled for plant pigments and light and dark transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Feeding at the low density significantly increased chlorophyll standing stock. Respiration and gross photosynthesis increased by an even greater percentage compared to ungrazed controls. Standing stocks of algal pigments, respiration, and photosynthesis were depressed in microcosms which received the 160-snail or raking treatments. The dominant benthic algae in the containers were pennate diatoms. Grazed containers contained a larger percentage of non-motile as compared to motile forms.Sediments fertilized with ammonium at a rate equivalent to excretion of six snails, showed increased chlorophyll content equal to the 80-snail treatment. Daily raking inhibited this effect. We conclude that low densities of Ilyanassa obsoleta stimulate algal growth by accelerating nitrogen cycling and selectively removing specific components of the diatom community. At high snail densities these effects are overwhelmed by overgrazing and sediment stirring.  相似文献

1. Few studies have directly addressed the role played by parasites in the structure and function of ecosystems. Parasites influence the behaviour, reproduction and overall fitness of their hosts, but have been usually overlooked in community and ecosystem‐level studies. We investigated the effects of trematode parasites on snail–periphyton interactions. 2. Physa  acuta (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) snails infected with the trematode Posthodiplostomum minimum (often >30% of within‐shell biomass) grazed more rapidly than uninfected snails. Trematode effects on snail grazing indirectly affected the standing stock and community structure of periphyton. Populations of snails with 50% infected individuals reduced algal biomass by 20% more than populations with lesser (10% or 0%) infection rates. 3. The alga Cladophora glomerata dominated periphyton communities grazed by snail populations with 50% infection rates, whereas diatoms and blue–green algal taxa dominated when grazed by snail populations with lower infection rates. 4. Thus, trematodes indirectly affected periphyton communities by altering host snail behaviour, a trait‐mediated indirect effect. These results indicate that trematodes can indirectly influence benthic community structure beyond simple population fitness, with possible related effects on ecosystem function.  相似文献

Primary production of the microphytobenthic community and carbohydrates concentrations were studied in the lagoonal system of Grado and Marano, located in the Northern Adriatic coast. Sediment samples were collected along a salinity gradient. Abundance and species composition of the microphytobenthic communities were analysed and the benthic microalgal biomass was estimated as Chlorophyll a (Chl a). Primary production of benthic diatoms was estimated using 14C-tracer. Extracellular carbohydrates were extracted from the sediment and separated in two operationally defined fractions (colloidal and EDTA-extractable). Salinity was higher in the Grado lagoon, where the benthic microalgal community was mainly composed of marine diatoms. In the Marano lagoon, which has a lower salinity, freshwater species were also found. In both lagoons, photosynthetic efficiency showed an inverse relationship with salinity and a direct relationship with the main biological variables. Photosynthetic activity was directly related to Chl a and abundance of benthic microalgae, suggesting that in the benthic system microalgal community is responsible for primary production. Overall, salinity was also influent on the microphytobenthic primary production, which was greater in the more saline Grado lagoon.  相似文献

1. To examine how the vertical distribution of periphytic biomass and primary production in the upper 0–1 m of the water column changes along an inter‐lake eutrophication gradient, artificial substrata (plastic strips) were introduced into the littoral zones of 13 lakes covering a total phosphorus (TP) summer mean range from 11 to 536 μg L?1. Periphyton was measured in July (after 8 weeks) and September (after 15 weeks) at three water depths (0.1, 0.5 and 0.9 m). 2. Periphyton chlorophyll a concentration and dry weight generally increased with time and the communities became more heterotrophic. Mean periphytic biomass was unimodally related to TP, reaching a peak between 60 and 200 μg L?1. 3. The proportion of diatoms in the periphyton decreased from July to September. A taxonomic shift occurred from dominance (by biovolume) of diatoms and cyanobacteria at low TP to dominance of chlorophytes at intermediate TP and of diatoms (Epithemia sp.) in the two most TP‐rich lakes. 4. The grazer community in most lakes was dominated by chironomid larvae and the total biomass of grazers increased with periphyton biomass. 5. Community respiration (R), maximum light‐saturated photosynthetic rate (Pmax), primary production and the biomass of macrograzers associated with periphyton were more closely related to periphyton biomass than to TP. Biomass‐specific rates of R, Pmax and production declined with increasing biomass. 6. Mean net periphyton production (24 h) was positive in most lakes in July and negative in all lakes in September. Net production was not related to the TP gradient in July, but decreased in September with increasing TP. 7. The results indicate that nutrient concentrations alone are poor predictors of the standing biomass and production of periphyton in shallow lakes. However, because periphyton biomass reaches a peak in the range of phosphorus concentration in which alternative states occur in shallow lakes, recolonisation by submerged macrophytes after nutrient reduction may potentially be suppressed by periphyton growth.  相似文献
