The proximate composition, vitamin C, α-tocopherol, dietary fibers, minerals, fatty acid and amino acid profiles of three tropical edible seaweeds, Eucheuma cottonii (Rhodophyta), Caulerpa lentillifera (Chlorophyta) and Sargassum polycystum (Phaeophyta) were studied. The seaweeds were high in ash (37.15–46.19%) and dietary fibers (25.05–39.67%) and low in lipid content (0.29–1.11%) on dry weight (DW) basis. These seaweeds contained 12.01–15.53% macro-minerals (Na, K, Ca and Mg) and 7.53–71.53 mg.100 g−1 trace minerals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Se and I). The crude protein content of E. cottonii (9.76% DW) and C. lentillifera (10.41% DW) were higher than that of S. polycystum (5.4% DW), and protein chemical scores are between 20 and 67%. The PUFA content of E. cottonii was 51.55%, C. lentillifera 16.76% and S. polycystum 20.34%. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), accounted for 24.98% of all fatty acids in E. cottonii. These seaweeds have significant vitamin C (∼35 mg.100 g−1) and α-tocopherol (5.85–11.29 mg.100 g−1) contents.  相似文献

Anaerobic degradation of the sulfated polysaccharide carrageenan was investigated by batch digestion of the red macroalga Eucheuma cottonii. During a 10-week incubation, ca. 60% of the starting E. cottonii biomass was fermented to CO2, methane, and volatile fatty acids (predominantly acetate). Carrageenan degradation paralleled the loss of total biomass, suggesting no preferential degradation or preservation. After 10 weeks of incubation, the carrageenan content of the remaining biomass was 51%, as opposed to 61% of the original E. cottonii biomass. Carrageenan recovered after 10 weeks of digestion had a lower average molecular weight (319,000 versus 510,000) and formed solutions with considerably lower viscosities than did intact carrageenan. The percent C and percent N content of the particulate material in the digestors increased over time, probably as a result of microbial growth. In contrast, the percent S content decreased continuously; the loss of sulfur was most likely a result of the hydrolysis of carrageenan. Results from this study indicate that it is not economically viable to process E. cottonii simultaneously for hydrocolloids and methane.  相似文献

Grain of 16.7% moisture content was stored in exprimental silos by four methods. These were: (1) controlled environment (a sealed container); (2) addition of 1% acid mixture (60 acetic acid: 40 propionic acid); (3) addition of 3.2% sodium hydroxide in a 32% solution to give 21.8% moisture content; and (4) air-dried (82°C) to 13.3% moisture.After 9 months storage, apparent digestibility of dry matter, nitrogen and neutral detergent fibre was measured with pigs, while true protein digestiblity, biological value and net protein utilization were measured with rats.With pigs, there was no treatment effect on dry matter digestibility, but neutral detergent fibre digestibility was reduced in the dried barley. The apparent protein digestibility was markedly depressed to 44.5% for the alkali-treated grain compared with a mean of 65.1% for the other treatments (P < 0.001). In the rat trial, true digestibility of nitrogen and biological value were severely depressed (P < 0.001) by alkali treatment, but differences between the other treatments were relatively small.  相似文献

The antioxidant activity of eight edible species of Malaysian North Borneo seaweeds obtained from Sabah waters (Kudat, Tanjung Aru and Semporna) consisting of three red seaweeds (Eucheuma cottonii, E. spinosum and Halymenia durvillaei), two green seaweeds (Caulerpa lentillifera and C. racemosa) and three brown seaweeds (Dictyota dichotoma, Sargassum polycystum and Padina sp.) were determined. Methanol and diethyl ether were used as extraction solvent. The antioxidant activities were determined by two methods, TEAC (trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity) and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) assays. The total phenolic content of the extract was determined according to the Folin–Ciocalteu method and results were expressed as phloroglucinol equivalents. The methanolic extracts of green seaweeds, C. lentillifera and C. racemosa, and the brown seaweed, S. polycystum showed better radical-scavenging and reducing power ability, and higher phenolic content than the other seaweeds. The TEAC and FRAP assays showed positive and significantly high correlation (R 2 = 0.89). There was a strong correlation (R 2 = 0.96) between the reducing power and the total phenolic content of the seaweeds methanolic dry extracts. These seaweeds could be potential rich sources of natural antioxidants.  相似文献

The effect of radiation pasteurization of sugar cane bagasse and rice straw and fermentation using various strains of fungi were studied for upgrading of cellulosic wastes. The initial contamination by fungi and aerobic bacteria both in bagasse and straw was high. The doses of 30 kGy for sterilization and 8 kGy for elimination of fungi were required. Irradiation effect showed that rice straw contained comparatively radioresistant microorganisms. It was observed that all the fungi (Hericium erinacium, Pleurotus djamor, Ganoderma lucidum, Auricularia auricula, Lentinus sajor-caju, Coriolus versicolor, Polyporus arcularius, Coprinus cinereus) grow extending over the entire substrates during one month after inoculation in irradiated bagasse and rice straw with 3% rice bran and 65% moisture content incubated at 30°C. Initially, sugar cane bagasse and rice straw substrates contained 39.4% and 25.9% of cellulose, 22.9% and 26.9% of hemicellulose, and 19.6% and 13.9% of lignin + cutin, respectively. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) values decreased significantly in sugar cane bagasse fermented byG. lucidum, A. auricula andP. arcularius, and in rice straw fermented by all the 8 strains of fungi. Acid detergent fibre (ADF) values also decreased in bagasse and rice straw fermented by all the fungi.P. arcularius, H. erinacium, G. lucidum andC. cinereus were found to be the most effective strains for delignification of sugar cane bagasse.  相似文献

Culinary wastes were collected from three different sources, namely, institutional, restaurant and household. As dry matter content of the food wastes increased, protein level (on a dry weight basis) remained relatively constant, whereas fat content markedly increased.Sheep readily adapted to a diet containing 35% of dry matter as food wastes, their daily dry matter intake being 4.5% of body weight; this suggested that palatability was no problem. Digestibility values of 76, 68, 73 and 99% were calculated for dry matter, protein ether extract and acid detergent fibre fractions of garbage, indicating that the material had a high nutritive value for sheep.The culinary wastes had a low count of harmful bacteria. Storage of the material at room temperature resulted in moulds and odours after a week, indicating that the material deteriorated quite rapidly. The addition of organic acids or formaldehyde kept the material quite stable for several weeks.  相似文献

The potential of fumaric acid as a raw material in the polymer industry and the increment of cost of petroleum-based fumaric acid raises interest in fermentation processes for production of this compound from renewable resources. Although the chemical process yields 112% w/w fumaric acid from maleic anhydride and the fermentation process yields only 85% w/w from glucose, the latter raw material is three times cheaper. Besides, the fermentation fixes CO2. Production of fumaric acid by Rhizopus species and the involved metabolic pathways are reviewed. Submerged fermentation systems coupled with product recovery techniques seem to have achieved economically attractive yields and productivities. Future prospects for improvement of fumaric acid production include metabolic engineering approaches to achieve low pH fermentations.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the effects of stage of maturity on ensiling characteristics and ruminal nutrient degradability of oat silage. Oat was field grown and forage was harvested at the boot or soft dough stage and ensiled in mini-silos for 0, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 45 days. Two lactating Holstein cows fitted with ruminal fistulas were used determine ruminal nutrient degradability. Regardless of the stage of maturity, ensiled forages went through a rapid fermentation with a sharp decline in pH during the first 2 days of ensiling. Extensive proteolysis took place between 0 and 2 days as indicated by a reduction in true protein and neutral detergent insoluble protein (NDICP) and an increase in non-protein nitrogen (NPN). Chemical analysis of the 45 days silage showed that stage of maturity had no effect on neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) of oat silage. However, oat harvested at the boot stage contained more crude protein (CP) and less starch than that harvested at the soft dough stage. Distribution of protein fractions showed that oat harvested at the boot stage contained lower NPN, NDICP and acid detergent insoluble protein than oat harvested at the soft dough stage. Results of the in situ incubation experiment indicated that oat harvested at the soft dough stage had lower ruminal dry matter (60.6 vs. 66.4%), CP (81.3 vs. 88.7%) and NDF (35.4 vs. 42.2%) degradabilities than oat harvested at the boot stage. It was concluded that chemical composition and ruminal nutrient degradability of oat silage are significantly influenced by stage of maturity.  相似文献

Final instar Persectania ewingii (Westwood) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were fed seedling Triticum aestivum L. for 2 days to determine the approximate digestibility of the cell wall and cell content fractions. Cell wall content was estimated using a micro-analytical neutral detergent fibre technique. Approximate digestibilites of neutral detergent fibre, neutral detergent solubles and dry matter were calculated for individuals and pooled samples. P. ewingii larvae digested a small but significant proportion of the fibre ingested (13–21%), higher than that previously reported for herbivorous insects. The micro-analytical and previously used macro-analytical techniques produced similar estimates of digestibility although both techniques have inherent shortcomings, the latter requiring the pooling of samplex and the former limiting the number of replicates during chemical analysis. Differences in the amount of larval frass collected during the feeding trial (corrected for consumption) explained much of the variation in digestibility values, while there were no effects of larval mass, overall consumption and total frass produced on digestibility estimates. These results confirm that plant cell contents are the major source of nutrients to larval Lepidoptera although there is some chemical disruption of the plant cell wall.  相似文献

Curaua fibres have specific mechanical properties similar to inorganic fibres and are an important renewable raw material. Milled curaua fibres, submitted to different treatments, were characterized by mechanical and thermal properties, moisture content, water absorption, surface morphology, FTIR spectroscopy, density and X-ray diffraction. Except for moisture content and mechanical properties, no other significant changes were observed after the treatments. The treated fibres also show an increase of surface roughness.  相似文献

Background

Environmental issues and shortage of fossil fuels have turned the public interest to the utilization of renewable, environmentally friendly fuels, such as ethanol. In order to minimize the competition between fuels and food production, researchers are focusing their efforts to the utilization of wastes and by-products as raw materials for the production of ethanol. household food wastes are being produced in great quantities in European Union and their handling can be a challenge. Moreover, their disposal can cause severe environmental issues (for example emission of greenhouse gasses). On the other hand, they contain significant amounts of sugars (both soluble and insoluble) and they can be used as raw material for the production of ethanol.

Results

Household food wastes were utilized as raw material for the production of ethanol at high dry material consistencies. A distinct liquefaction/saccharification step has been included to the process, which rapidly reduced the viscosity of the high solid content substrate, resulting in better mixing of the fermenting microorganism. This step had a positive effect in both ethanol production and productivity, leading to a significant increase in both values, which was up to 40.81% and 4.46 fold, respectively. Remaining solids (residue) after fermentation at 45% w/v dry material (which contained also the unhydrolyzed fraction of cellulose), were subjected to a hydrothermal pretreatment in order to be utilized as raw material for a subsequent ethanol fermentation. This led to an increase of 13.16% in the ethanol production levels achieving a final ethanol yield of 107.58 g/kg dry material.

Conclusions

In conclusion, the ability of utilizing household food waste for the production of ethanol at elevated dry material content has been demonstrated. A separate liquefaction/saccharification process can increase both ethanol production and productivity. Finally, subsequent fermentation of the remaining solids could lead to an increase of the overall ethanol production yield.  相似文献

Aims: To evaluate the potential of apple pomace (AP) supplemented with rice husk for hyper citric acid production through solid‐state fermentation by Aspergillus niger NRRL‐567. Optimization of two key parameters, such as moisture content and inducer (ethanol and methanol) concentration was carried out by response surface methodology. Methods and Results: In this study, the effect of two crucial process parameters for solid‐state citric acid fermentation by A. niger using AP waste supplemented with rice husk were thoroughly investigated in Erlenmeyer flasks through response surface methodology. Moisture and methanol had significant positive effect on citric acid production by A. niger grown on AP (P < 0·05). Higher values of citric acid on AP by A. niger (342·41 g kg?1 and 248·42 g kg?1 dry substrate) were obtained with 75% (v/w) moisture along with two inducers [3% (v/w) methanol and 3% (v/w) ethanol] with fermentation efficiency of 93·90% and 66·42%, respectively depending upon the total carbon utilized after 144 h of incubation period. With the same optimized parameters, conventional tray fermentation was conducted. The citric acid concentration of 187·96 g kg?1 dry substrate with 3% (v/w) ethanol and 303·34 g kg?1 dry substrate with 3% (v/w) methanol were achieved representing fermentation efficiency of 50·80% and 82·89% in tray fermentation depending upon carbon utilization after 120 h of incubation period. Conclusions: Apple pomace proved to be the promising substrate for the hyper production of citric acid through solid‐state tray fermentation, which is an economical technique and does not require any sophisticated instrumentation. Significance and Impact of the Study: The study established that the utilization of agro‐industrial wastes have positive repercussions on the economy and will help to meet the increasing demands of citric acid and moreover will help to alleviate the environmental problems resulting from the disposal of agro‐industrial wastes.  相似文献

The van Soest detergent method for determination of cell wall constituents is suggested as a good routine analysis for plant material of high fibre content. The chemical composition of the fibre fraction of 24 tropical and subtropical by-products has been investigated, and simple and multiple correlation coefficients have been calculated between organic matter digestibility in vivo and in vitro, and the contents of different cell wall fractions.The acid detergent fibre (ADF) gave the highest negative correlation with the digestibility of organic material independent from the botanical origin of the sample. The ADF fraction proved superior to the Weende crude fibre as well as to single fractions of the cell walls such as lignin, cutin and silica.The determination of ADF is more convenient, and needs only half the time and half the expenditure required for the Weende crude fibre analysis. There is the additional aspect of health: determination of ADF in the detergent analysis requires no use of asbestos.  相似文献

Since maize silage is an important forage in cattle nutrition, it is important to know its nutritive value. Much effort is put into breeding maize, and several new varieties are introduced on the market every year. This requires periodical analyses of the nutritive value of current maize varieties for the formulation of cattle rations. The aim of this study was to examine the nutritive value of whole crop maize silage (WCMS) from nine maize varieties in 3 consecutive years. For the analysis of nutrient composition and ruminal degradability of organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (aNDFom) and non-fibre carbohydrates (NFC), varieties were harvested at three harvest dates (50%, 55% and 60% dry matter content in ear). Due to capacity limitations, the digestibility of WCMS was tested only for the middle harvest date. The CP and acid detergent fibre (ADFom) content was affected (p < 0.05) while aNDFom and NFC content was not influenced by variety. With advancing maturity, CP, aNDFom and ADFom content declined while NFC content increased. Variety influenced effective ruminal degradability (ED) of nutrients, except for CP. The ED of all examined nutrients decreased as maturity advanced from first to third harvest date. Digestibility of OM, ADFom and NFC was significantly and digestibility of aNDFom was tendentially (p = 0.064) influenced by variety. Additionally, an effect of year and a harvest date × year interaction was found for almost all examined parameters. In conclusion, variety, harvest date and year influence the nutritive value of WCMS. A comparison with earlier studies shows that current varieties have a higher fibre digestibility and a slower-ripening stover compared to older varieties.  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to define the sources of variation determining the energy content of barley and to develop a practical method to predict the digestible energy (DE) and metabolisable energy (ME) content of individual barley samples. The 19 barley samples used in this study were diverse varieties grown in different regions. The feeding experiment used 57 barrows (initial body weight 31.5 ± 3.2 kg) and was conducted over two consecutive periods (n = 6 per treatment) using a completely randomised design. During each period, the pigs were placed in metabolic crates for a 5-d total collection of faeces and urine following a 10-d adaptation to the diets. Among the barley samples, on dry matter (DM) basis the levels of neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre (ADF), crude protein and starch ranged from 16.1% to 38.9%, 3.9% to 9.6%, 10.1% to 16.8% and 43.5% to 57.9%, respectively. The mean determined DE and ME contents amounted to 14.7 and 14.4 MJ/kg DM and varied among the samples by 1.85 MJ (13.6%) and 1.78 MJ (13.3%), respectively. The ADF fraction accounted for 73% and 76% of the total variation in the DE and ME content, respectively. It revealed that for prediction of the DE and ME contents in barley, equations had the best fit when the analysed contents of ADF, neutral detergent fibre and gross energy were used for calculation (R2 = 0.92). On the basis of the developed equations, the DE and ME contents of barley of different origin can be predicted with an acceptable accuracy when used as feed for growing pigs.  相似文献

Cotton fibres, the single‐celled trichomes derived from the ovule epidermis, provide the most important natural material for the global textile industry. A number of studies have demonstrated that regulating endogenous hormone levels through transgenic approaches can improve cotton fibre qualities. Phytosulfokine‐α (PSK‐α) is a novel peptide hormone in plants that is involved in regulating cell proliferation and elongation. However, its potential applications in crop genetic improvement have not been evaluated. In this study, we describe how exogenous PSK‐α application promotes cotton fibre cell elongation in vitro. Chlorate, an effective inhibitor of peptide sulfation, suppressed fibre elongation in ovule culture. Exogenously applied PSK‐α partly restored the chlorate‐induced suppression. A putative PSK gene (GhPSK) was cloned from Gossypium hirsutum. Expression pattern analysis revealed that GhPSK is preferentially expressed in rapidly elongating fibre cells (5–20 days postanthesis). Overexpression of GhPSK in cotton increased the endogenous PSK‐α level and promoted cotton fibre cell elongation, resulting in longer and finer fibres. Further results from electrophysiological and physiological analyses suggest that GhPSK affects fibre development through regulation of K+ efflux. Digital gene expression (DGE) profile analysis of GhPSK overexpression lines indicates that PSK signalling may regulate the respiratory electron‐transport chain and reactive oxygen species to affect cotton fibre development. These results imply that peptide hormones are involved in cotton fibre growth and suggest a new strategy for the biotechnological improvement of cotton fibre quality.  相似文献

Carrageenan, a hydrocolloid used in the food and pharmaceutical industry mainly as a thickener and stabilizer, has an annual global market of US $450 million. In Mexico, carrageenan imports doubled during the last years, reaching 4,400 t in 2008. Any carrageenan industrial project demands a regular supply of raw material from reliable sources capable to meet and maintain required volumes and qualities. Some carrageenophytes have been exploited traditionally in Baja California Peninsula (i.e., Chondracanthus canaliculatus). The recent demand, however, for carrageenan has increased the development of cultivation of economically important seaweeds mainly in the tropics. In the Yucatan peninsula, experimental cultivation of native and exotic species has been carried out during the last 10 years. Eucheuma isiforme, Solieria filiformis, Halymenia floresii, and the introduced Kappaphycus alvarezii represent potential raw material sources for the production of carrageenan. Demand for iota carrageenan-producing species which could be sourced from native species is not a market priority. On the contrary, the most in demand are kappa and lambda carrageenan-producing species. In this study, we analyze the prospects for the commercial cultivation of tropical economically important seaweeds in the Yucatan peninsula.  相似文献

Hemicellulose components from industrial viscose fibre production are characterized by a lower cellulose content than commercial xylan and the presence of a carboxylic acid fraction originating from the alkaline degradation of carbohydrates during the process. This substrate, after neutralization, can be used by Trichoderma reesei RUT C-30 for the production of cellulase-poor xylanases, useful for the pulp and paper industry. The yields of xylanase ranged up to almost 400 units/ml, with a ratio of carboxymethylcellulase/xylanase of less than 0.015. This crude xylanase enzyme mixture was shown to be superior to that obtained on beech-wood xylan when used for bleaching and, particularly, upgrading of hard-wood chemical pulp by selective removal of the xylan components. Biochemical studies indicate that the low cellulase production by T. reesei grown on these waste hemicelluloses is the result of a combination of at least three factors: (a) the comparatively low content of cellulose in these hemicellulosic wastes, (b) the inhibitory action of the carboxylic acid fraction present in the hemicellulosic wastes on growth and sporulation of T. reesei, and (c) the use of a mycelial inoculum that is unable to initiate the attack on the cellulose components within the carbon source. Brassica napus seed composition traits (fibre, protein, oil and fatty acid profiles), seed colour and yield-associated traits are regulated by a complex network of genetic factors. Although previous studies have attempted to dissect the underlying genetic basis for these traits, a more complete picture of the available quantitative trait loci (QTL) variation and any interaction between the different traits is required. In this study, QTL mapping for eleven seed composition traits, seed colour and a yield-related trait (TSW) was conducted in a spring-type canola-quality B. napus doubled haploid (DH) population from a cross between black-seeded (DH12075) and yellow-seeded (YN01-429) lines across five environments. A major QTL associated with fibre traits (acid detergent fibre, acid detergent lignin and neutral detergent fibre) and seed colour (whiteness index) was mapped on chromosome N9 across the five environments. Multi-trait analysis identified QTL which had pleiotropic effect for seed colour and other composition traits. Multi-environment analysis revealed genetic (QTL) × environment effects on most QTL. These findings provide a more detailed insight into the complex QTL networks controlling seed composition and yield-associated traits in canola-quality B. napus.  相似文献

Summary Samples of leaves and fruits exploited as food items byTrachypithecus auratus sondaicus were analysed for nitrogen content, acid detergent fibre (ADF), pepsin cellulase digestibility (CDIG), condensed tannins (CT), total phenolics (TP) and protein precipitation capacity (PP) and compared with fruits and leaves not eaten. Differences in chemical measures for items eaten and not eaten were not statistically significant but trends indicate that leaves may have been selected for their lower fibre content and greater digestibility. Fruits eaten also had a higher mean level of CDIG and lower mean level of ADF than fruits not eaten but these measures are not considered to be of major importance in fruit selection as CDIG was lower and ADF higher in fruits eaten than in leaves eaten. Levels of CT, TP and PP capacity were higher in fruits eaten than in fruits not eaten but lower in leaves eaten than in leaves not eaten. The role of tannins and phenolics in food selection is discussed. Leaves (and fruits) were not strongly selected on the basis of protein content. Approximately half the dietary intake ofT. auratus sondaicus was leaves, a protein-rich food source. Possibly, protein levels in foliage at Pangandaran were sufficient that selection for this nutrient was not required. A nutrient other than protein (for example, soluble carbohydrates) may have been maximised through food selection. The protein/ADF ratio may provide an indicator of the acceptability of foliage in a habitat as potential food for a colobine. However, this ratio did not govern food selection byT. auratus sondaicus at Pangandaran.  相似文献
