Feeding habit and diet composition of two colonizing mullids, Upeneus asymmetricus and U. moluccensis, and two indigenous goatfish Mullus barbatus and M. surmuletus (Mullidae), in the eastern Mediterranean were investigated. The most important taxonomic group in the diet of all four species was the Decapoda which were identified to the specific level, enabling precise assessment of trophic partitioning. Leptochela pugnax, a pasiphaeid of Red Sea origin, was by far the most important prey of all mullids studied, which resulted in considerable trophic overlap between all of the species. Trophic separation does not play an important role in resource partitioning of the eastern Mediterranean mullids. Consequently, coexistence between colonizing and indigenous mullids is presumably achieved by spatial segregation.  相似文献

Genetic distances were lower between Upeneus moluccensis and Pseudopeneus prayensis than between those species and Mullus barbatus and Mullus surmuletus . However, for allozymes, the two Mullus species were found genetically more distinct from U. moluccensis than from P. prayensis , but RAPD and mtDNA analysis showed the opposite. RAPDs revealed less interspecific divergence compared with allozymes and the results they produced were more consistent with mtDNA analysis. Although RAPDs did not add any supplementary taxonomic information, they proved valuable tools for quick and reliable species discrimination compared with allozymes and mtDNA.  相似文献

The feeding habits of two sympatric species pairs of demersal fish ( Mullus barbatus-Mullus surmuletus, Serranus cabrilla-Serranus hepatus ) which occupy the shallow coastal area (25–30 m) in Iraklion Bay were investigated from samples collected on a monthly basis (August 1990 to August 1992). Stomach content analyses revealed that all of them were carnivores, feeding mainly on benthic invertebrates, and that each species consumed a narrow range of prey species with no significant dietary overlap. The morphology of their feeding apparatus was compared to examine the effect of any morphological differences on food selection and resource partitioning between the fish species. The species could be distinguished on the basis of the size of their mouth gape, the number of gill rakers and the length of their intestine. This study shows that each species pair follows a different strategy segregating along food niche dimensions. In particular, M. barbatus and M. surmuletus segregate their feeding niche consuming different prey taxa with similar sizes whereas S. cabrilla and S. hepatus differ considerably with respect to the degree to which prey species contribute to their diets coupled with differences in mean prey sizes.  相似文献

The introduction of invasive exotic species can have strong ecological impacts on the native biota, with direct consequences for commercial fisheries. Feeding ecology studies are among the primary sources for improving predictions related to community structures, for example, by revealing potential competitive interactions between native and invasive species. We compared the stomach contents and studied diet overlaps among a native (Mullus barbatus) and two invasive (Upeneus moluccensis and U. pori) mullid species, collected off the coasts of the northeastern Levantine where invasive mullids have been part of the ecosystem for more than half a century. We also assessed the effect of sex, sampling period, depth and size on stomach contents. Schoener’s index indicated significant diet overlaps between U. moluccensisU. pori and U. moluccensisM. barbatus. Diets of U. pori and M. barbatus did not significantly overlap, which was explained by their differing depth preferences. Assessment of stomach contents showed that Crustacea, specifically Decapoda, was the main prey group across the studied mullid species. Polychaeta was also of high importance in the diet of the native M. barbatus, but not for the two invasive Upeneus species. A trophic level analysis revealed the two invasive mullids to have a higher trophic level than the native species (U. moluccensis: 3.58, U. pori: 3.55 versus M. barbatus: 3.38). The lack of a clear separation in habitat and diet preferences documented here between native and invasive mullids may pose a risk for the persistence of the economically valuable native M. barbatus in the Mediterranean Sea.

Two benthic carnivorous goatfish (Mullidae), Upeneichthys stotti (max total length, L T= 179 mm) and U. lineatus (max L T= 257 mm), were trawled from the inner continental shelf waters of Western Australia. U. stotti was found almost exclusively offshore at 20–35 m depth, while U. lineatus was most abundant inshore at 5–15 m depth. Smaller individuals of both species ate small, thin-shelled mysids, tanaids and amphipods, while larger fish ate large, hard-bodied isopods, carid decapods and brachyuran crabs. Classification and ordination of the mean volumetric percentage contributions of the prey (dietary samples) of both species from all sites and in each season did not lead to a clear separation between these two species. However, ordination demonstrated that the dietary samples of the two species were distinct when the two species were found together, and when fish of sequential 20-mm length intervals were used. The interspecific size-class differences were consistent with the results obtained using Schoener's overlap index, for which values >0·6 were recorded for only two of the 45 possible interspecific pairwise comparisons. Since these interspecific differences occurred despite virtually identical mouth sizes and morphologies, the two species must feed in a slightly different manner and/or in different microhabitats. While most comparable-sized fish ate tanaids and amphipods, U. stotti ate more relatively mobile epibenthic mysids, cumaceans and carid decapods, whereas U. lineatus ate more larger and slower-moving burrowing bivalves, onuphid polychaetes and brachyuran crabs. The partial partitioning of habitats, when combined with differences in the diet, would help facilitate the co-existence of these two mullids when they are abundant.  相似文献

Features of reproductive biology and the stages of early ontogeny are described in the mass tropical species manybar goatfish Parupeneus multifasciatus. In general, in the catches represented by mainly sexually mature fishes, females prevail but males prevail in the largest size classes. The females reach their first sexual maturity by approximately 110 mm fork length, and they are characterized by continuous oogenesis and egg deposition in batches. The fish spawn over the entire year with a trend to lower values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) of the females from June to October. The features of early ontogeny are compared in manybar goatfish and red mullet Mullus barbatus ponticus from the Black Sea.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. A kleptoparasitic spider, Argyrodes kumadai , is known to use phylogenetically unrelated host species in different regions – Cyrtophora moluccensis (Araneidae) in south-west Japan and Agelena silvatica (Agelenidae) in north-east Japan. The work reported here examined whether differences in host characters affect prey acquisition of A. kumadai .
2. Field surveys showed that prey-biomass capture rate of Argyrodes was significantly higher in populations parasitising Cyrtophora than in populations parasitising Agelena . Although Argyrodes appeared to catch fewer prey within Cyrtophora webs, they were able to feed upon substantially larger prey.
3. Differences in prey-biomass capture rate were found to reflect differences in host traits rather than regional differences in potential prey availability. Individuals in populations parasitising Cyrtophora were observed to acquire prey via a number of foraging tactics that included stealing wrapped food bundles, feeding upon prey remains and, in the case of large prey items, feeding together with the host. In contrast, individuals in populations parasitising Agelena were only ever observed to feed upon small prey items ignored by its host.
4. This variability in prey acquisition between kleptoparasite populations reflected different opportunities for feeding within their respective host webs – opportunities that were primarily determined by the foraging behaviour of the host. The present study was designed to identify maturity of female red mullet, Mullus barbatus barbatus, using microscopic criteria, offering an accurate determination of the ovarian cycle and estimation of maturity size. Histological analysis of 499 females from 13 monthly samplings was applied (Thermaikos Gulf, N. Aegean Sea, Greece). Oocyte development was divided into five stages, with a mean oocyte size range from 56 to 363 μm in diameter. Ovarian maturity was defined by the maturation stage of the most advanced oocytes and divided into four phases. By using the monthly changes in the percentage frequency of ovarian phases, the ovarian cycle of M. barbatus was divided into three periods: a long period of early oogenesis (November to February), a short period of vitellogenesis (February to April) and a spawning period from April through June with peak activity in May. Both gonadosomatic (up to 7.5%) and hepatosomatic indices (up to 2%) can be used together to predict the spawning period. Red mullet should be classified as a multiple spawning species. Females reached 50% maturity (Lm50) at 11.4 cm and 95% maturity (Lm95) at 15.5 cm TL. The Lm50 values for female red mullet populations across the Mediterranean Sea tended to show differences ranging from 11 to 14.4 cm FL or 11.4–14 cm TL. The current European Union fisheries management plan stipulates a minimum landing size (MLS) of 11 cm TL for Mullidae spp. fisheries in the Mediterranean. This MLS is at the lower part of the Lm50 range, thus allowing an extensive removal of immature juveniles. A revision of this MLS value is recommended to help ensure that red mullet stocks remain within safe biological limits.  相似文献

Densities of red mullet Mullus surmuletus have declined since 1996 at Cap Martin, Alpes‐Maritimes, France, following colonization by Caulerpa taxifolia . Foraging M. surmuletus were rarely observed over C. taxifolia or the seagrass Posidonia oceanica , but were observed over bare sand and endemic macroalgae. Within colonized sites (where the mean cover of C. taxifolia was 30–100%), fish were concentrated on areas with low cover of C. taxifolia (<21%). A difference in the frequency of observations of foraging groups (17%) was observed between sites with and without C. taxifolia . The observed patterns were probably due to a physical barrier to foraging that is presented by meadows of C. taxifolia . Changes to habitat structure that occur when the substratum is colonized by C. taxifolia influence the accessibility to benthic food resources, and consequently the foraging activities of fish that feed on benthic invertebrates. The decline in density of M. surmuletus at Cap Martin could be the result of fish emigration from colonized sites (unfavourable to the species) to uncolonized sites.  相似文献

Relationships between sympatric populations of four species of Cestoda belonging to the genus Bothriocephalus ( B. barbarus. B. gregarius, B. funiculus and B. scorpii ) and populations of their respective hosts Scophthalmus rhombus, Pserra maxima, Ciliata mustela and Myoxocephalus scorpius were investigated. The parasites were overdispersed within their host populations. The mean intensities of B. burbarus were 1.59 ( s.d. =0.83) in the Mediterranean (Gulf of Lions) and 1.25 ( s.d. =0.53) in the Atlantic (coasts of Brittany). The mean intensities of B. gregarius were 62.3 ( s.d. =49.7) in the Mediterranean and 14.06 ( s.d. =18.48) in the Atlantic, compared to 1.78 ( s.d. =0.3) for B. funiculus and 21.6 ( s.d. =17.3) for B. scorpii .
The distribution of prevalence of B. gregarius corresponded to a lognormal distribution while those of B. barbatus and B. fwticulus corresponded to negative binomials. No differences in infection could be related to host sex. The parasitization of B. gregariusdepended on host size. In brill, infection by E. barbatus was independent of host size and remained stable after the fish reached 180mm in length. Parasitization of turbot by E. gregarius was lower in young fish (≤110–150 mm) and increased with the host size. Compared to the Atlantic populations of B. gregarius and B. barbatus, the Mediterranean populations were more frequently and intensively infected. The differences in the population dynamics of B. gregarius and B. barbarus would appear to depend on whether or not the life cycle involves a paratenic host.  相似文献

Stable‐isotope ratios (δ15N and δ13C) and diet of the red mullets Mullus barbatus and Mullus surmuletus were analysed in two zones differently subjected to the Rhône River runoff in the Gulf of Lions (north‐west Mediterranean sea) in May and October 2004. δ15N and δ13C increased significantly with fish size in M. barbatus in both zones and seasons, whereas no significant trend was evidenced in M. surmuletus. A clear size‐related shift in diet was observed in M. barbatus, with an increase in polychaete and shrimp consumption with size and a decrease in small crustacean consumption. In M. surmuletus, a diet shift was observed only between medium and large individuals. Large M. surmuletus preyed on shrimps, polychaetes, bivalves, ophiurids and amphipods, and ingested prey of lower mean mass than M. barbatus of similar size. Difference in size‐related increase in δ15N between the two mullid fish species were related to difference of trophic level of their main prey. Sub‐surface deposit‐feeding polychaetes, carnivorous polychaetes, shrimps and brachyurans presented higher δ15N values than bivalves, small crustaceans and ophiurids. The lower δ13C values observed in M. barbatus compared to M. surmuletus were related to a higher consumption of sub‐surface polychaetes in the former species. Significantly, lower δ13C were recorded in fishes collected off the Rhône River, particularly in spring, suggesting an influence of river inputs as a source of particular organic matter for mullids in this zone after the flooding season. Thus, these closely related sympatric fish species displayed diet divergences that were reflected in their stable isotopic signatures.  相似文献

Weight–length relationships were estimated for 20 Lessepsian fish species of the Iskenderun Bay, namely, Apogon nigripinnis , Apogon queketti , Callionymus flamentosus , Cynoglossus sinusarabici , Dussumieria elopsoides , Etrumeus teres , Fistularia commersonii , Lagocephalus spadiceus , Lagocephalus suezensis , Leiognathus kluzingeri , Nemipterus japonicus , Oxyurichthys petersenii , Saurida undosquamis , Sillago sihama , Siganus luridus , Siganus rivulatus , Sphyraena chroysotaeina , Stephanolepis diaspros , Upeneus moluccensis and Upeneus pori . All regressions were found to be significant for all species. This study presents the first estimation of weight–length relationships for six species ( A. queketti , E. teres , F. commersonii , L. suezensis , Nemipterus randalli , and S. luridus ) inhabiting coastal areas of the northeastern Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

Cyrtophora moluccensis (Doleschall) in New Guinea and C. citricola Forskal in the Mediterranean and Africa form persistent aggregations of individuals of all ages. Characteristic of this "communal" organization (as defined by Wilson, 1971) in C. moluccensis are low level aggressive interactions during prey capture and during web repair and renewal. Such interactions may serve as a spacing mechanism, ensuring an adequate fool supply for each individual
Disadvantages resulting from conspicuousness and persistence of C. moluccensis colonies are a high incidence of parasitism and a large degree of colony avoidance by flying insects (potential prey). Advantages of communal organization postulated for C. moluccensis includes increased protection of egg-cases and young, greater web building efficiency, greater prey capture efficiency, and the ability to exploit habitats that are unavailable to solitary species. Evidence is presented for the first and last of these hypotheses.
It is suggested that due to its durable, 3-dimensional web Cyrtophora species could invade grassland habitats exposed to frequent and heavy wind and rain (Lubin, 1973). Colony formation then evolved in the larger species, C. moluccensis and C. citricola , as a means for exploiting large, open spaces that are rich in flying insects and poor in competing araneids. Under such optimal conditions, low level aggression occurring during prey capture and web construction may be interpreted as instances of reciprocal altruism among related colony members.  相似文献

The diet of the dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus , from the Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean, consisted primarily of crustaceans, molluscs and fishes, but diet composition varied with body size. The smaller dusky groupers (<300 mm L T) fed primarily on crustaceans, and particularly on brachyurans, which accounted for 46% of the prey identified. As dusky groupers grew, cephalopods became increasingly important and constituted 10 to 40% of the prey identified in subadult and adult specimens. The largest dusky groupers fed primarily on fishes that represented 40·9% of prey identified. These shifts in diet were accompanied by a positive selection of increasingly large prey and by an expansion of trophic niche. δ 15N values of dusky grouper white muscle ranged from 8·8 to 13·1% and 71% of the variation in δ 15N was explained by differences in dusky grouper size. δ 13C values ranged from – 17·9 to – 15·9%, and no significant body size effect on δ 13C was detected. Stomach content and 13C values indicated that from 1 year old, the diet of E. marginatus was based on the benthic food web. The enrichment in δ 15N registered from juvenile to large males was c . 3·8%. Overall, there was good agreement between gut content and stable isotope data indicating that the latter may be useful as a tool in trophic studies in marine protected areas where sampling for fishes is not allowed.  相似文献

At a large‐scale, the lipid content in the muscle of Pagellus acarne and Pagellus erythrinus was higher in the Gulf of Lions than in the Catalan Sea. Furthermore, there was a significant effect of depth on lipid content of Mullus barbatus, Mullus surmuletus and P. acarne , fishes with the highest lipid levels inhabiting the shallowest parts of the Gulf of Lions (all three species) and the Catalan Sea (last two species). At a small‐scale, the study revealed differences in the condition of Diplodus sargus sargus between protected (Natural Park of Cap de Creus) and the unprotected habitats. Total lipid content in the muscle of D. s. sargus during spawning was higher within the protected area than in adjacent unprotected rocky areas. Because lipids play a critical role in the health, growth and reproduction of fishes, results from this study support the relative importance of some habitats (shallow v . deeper parts of the continental shelf, the Gulf of Lions v . the Catalan Sea, and the protected bottom areas of the Natural Park of Cap de Creus v . the unprotected bottom areas) for the productivity of different Mediterranean fishes.  相似文献

A total of 1280 (670 females and 610 males) Squatina guggenheim , an angel shark endemic to the south-west Atlantic, was caught during five research cruises (1995, 1997 and 1998) carried out in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) at depths of 3·5–266 m. All angel sharks captured were sexed and measured. Of the 947 examined for stomach contents, 556 (58·7%) contained food and 391 (41·3%) were empty. Numerically, bony fishes were the principal dietary component (89·7%), followed by crustaceans (4·8%) and molluscs (4·4%). The most important prey species were Engraulis anchoita (58·3%), shrimps (4·4%) and Ilex argentinus (2·3%). Male and female diets were not found to differ significantly ( P  > 0·01), however, the diets of different size classes showed significant differences ( P  ≤ 0·01) (group 1, 23–44, group 2, 45–74 and group 3, 75–91 cm L T). Low rates of cannibalism were observed. The spatial and seasonal variability in the trophodynamics of S. guggenheim is discussed.  相似文献

A total of 206 river-spawning whitefish Coregonus lavaretus (L.) from the Bothnian Bay was investigated for food objects and acanthocephalans in the years 1975–78. The only acanthocephalan species found was Metechinorhynchus salmonis (Müller 1780), the total number of which was 1295.
The whitefish is shown to be highly susceptible to infection by M. salmonis , with as many as 88·9% of specimens infected in a sample in June 1978, although the mean intensity was only 8·9 parasites per host. The river-spawning whitefish does not favour the intermediate host, Pontoporeia affinis , in its summer diet in the Bothnian Bay preferring to feed on eggs and molluscs, so that the incidence of M. salmonis infection decreases to 33·3% by the middle of summer. This is further reduced in the late summer by the fast associated with the migration to their upriver spawning grounds. The fact that the other acanthocephalan inhabiting the river-spawning whitefish in the southern Gulf of Bothnia, Echinorhynchus gadi Müller, 1776 is not to be found in the Bothnian Bay population suggests that the fish captured in spring have remained in the Bothnian Bay throughout the winter.  相似文献

Spawning of the Hawaiian coral-reef goby Asterropteryx semipunctata was diurnal, occurring at various times throughout the day. Mean length of eggs deposited in nests was 0·76 mm (range 0·67–0·84); mean egg width was 0·47 mm (range 0·41–0·52). Clutch size varied from 296 to 1552 eggs (mean=886±309), and was independent of standard length, total body weight, and body condition. Mean relative clutch size was 1·59 eggs mg-1 total body weight (range 0·84–2·43). Clutches hatched 4–5 nights after being deposited in a nest. Mean notochord length of newly-hatched larvae was 1·88 mm (range 1·60–2·04). The minimum period of time that elapsed between egg deposition and subsequent growth of a new batch of oocytes to spawning size was 5–6 days, providing a reasonable estimate of minimum spawning interval. Compared with other gobiids, tropical species tend to have shorter incubation periods, smaller eggs and smaller larvae at hatching.  相似文献

Combined analyses of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and microsatellite loci were performed to assess the genetic differentiation of two spring‐spawning ciscoes from each other and from sympatric Coregonus albula in two German lakes. Polymorphism was screened at six microsatellite loci and mtDNA for a total of 247 and 94 ciscoes, respectively. Microsatellite data showed a weak differentiation between spring‐spawning Coregonus fontanae and sympatric C. albula in Lake Stechlin ( F ST = 0–0·008), whereas a significant differentiation was observed between spring‐spawning Coregonus lucinensis and sympatric C. albula in Lake Breiter Luzin ( F ST = 0·013–0·039). A more pronounced genetic difference was observed between both spring‐spawning species ( F ST = 0·05–0·128). Shared mtDNA haplotypes among sympatric species within both Lake Stechlin and Lake Breiter Luzin were observed, whereas no haplotype was shared between C. fontanae and C. lucinensis . These results suggest an independent origin for spring‐spawning ciscoes in each lake. Evidence is also provided for mtDNA introgression of Coregonus sardinella into C. lucinensis and C. albula in Lake Breiter Luzin. Postglacially, this species or at least a population which showed mtDNA introgression has colonized the Baltic Sea basin up to the glacial margin that was located between Lakes Stechlin and Breiter Luzin.  相似文献
