Most teleost fish reduce heart rate when exposed to acute hypoxia. This hypoxic bradycardia has been characterised for many fish species, but it remains uncertain whether this reflex contributes to the maintenance of oxygen uptake in hypoxia. Here we describe the effects of inhibiting the bradycardia on oxygen consumption (MO2), standard metabolic rate (SMR) and the critical oxygen partial pressure for regulation of SMR in hypoxia (Pcrit) in European eels Anguilla anguilla (mean ± SEM mass 528 ± 36 g; n = 14). Eels were instrumented with a Transonic flow probe around the ventral aorta to measure cardiac output (Q) and heart rate (f H). MO2 was then measured by intermittent closed respirometry during sequential exposure to various levels of increasing hypoxia, to determine Pcrit. Each fish was studied before and after abolition of reflex bradycardia by intraperitoneal injection of the muscarinic antagonist atropine (5 mg kg−1). In the untreated eels, f H fell from 39.0 ± 4.3 min−1 in normoxia to 14.8 ± 5.2 min−1 at the deepest level of hypoxia (2 kPa), and this was associated with a decline in Q, from 7.5 ± 0.8 mL min−1 kg−1 to 3.3 ± 0.7 mL min−1 kg−1 in normoxia versus deepest hypoxia, respectively. Atropine had no effect on SMR, which was 16.0 ± 1.8 μmol O2 kg−1 min−1 in control versus 16.8 ± 0.8 μmol O2 kg−1 min−1 following treatment with atropine. Atropine also had no significant effect on normoxic f H or Q in the eel, but completely abolished the bradycardia and associated decline in Q during progressive hypoxia. This pharmacological inhibition of the cardiac responses to hypoxia was, however, without affect on Pcrit, which was 11.7 ± 1.3 versus 12.5 ± 1.5 kPa in control versus atropinised eels, respectively. These results indicate, therefore, that reflex bradycardia does not contribute to maintenance of MO2 and regulation of SMR by the European eel in hypoxia.  相似文献

An isolated, perfused salmon tail preparation showed oxyconformance at low oxygen delivery rates. Addition of pig red blood cells to the perfusing solution at a haematocrit of 5 or 10% allowed the tail tissues to oxyregulate. Below ca. 60 ml O2 kg−1 h−1 of oxygen delivery (DO2), VO2 was delivery dependent. Above this value additional oxygen delivery did not increase VO2 of resting muscle above ca. 35 ml O2 kg−1 h−1. Following electrical stimulation, VO2 increased to ca. 65 ml O2 kg−1 h−1, with a critical DO2 of ca. 150 ml O2 kg−1 h−1. Dorsal aortic pressure fell to 69% of the pre-stimulation value after 5 min of stimulation and to 54% after 10 min. Microspheres were used to determine blood flow distribution (BFD) to red (RM) and white muscle (WM) within the perfused myotome. Mass specific BFD ratio at rest was found to be 4.03 ± 0.49 (RM:WM). After 5 min of electrical stimulation the ratio did not change. Perfusion with saline containing the tetrazolium salt 3-(4,5-Dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) revealed significantly more mitochondrial activity in RM. Formazan production from MTT was directly proportional to time of perfusion in both red and WM. The mitochondrial activity ratio (RM:WM) did not change over 90 min of perfusion.  相似文献

Gliding allows mammals to exploit canopy habitats of old-growth forests possibly as a means to save energy. To assess costs of quadrupedal locomotion for a gliding arboreal mammal, we used open-flow respirometry and a variable-speed treadmill to measure oxygen consumption and to calculate cost of transport, excess exercise oxygen consumption, and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption for nine northern flying squirrels (Glaucomys sabrinus) and four fox squirrels (Sciurus niger). Our results indicate that oxygen consumption during exercise by flying squirrels was 1.26–1.65 times higher than predicted based on body mass, and exponentially increased with velocity (from 0.84 ± 0.03 ml O2 kg−1 s−1 at 0.40 m s−1 to 1.55 ± 0.03 ml O2 kg−1 s−1 at 0.67 m s−1). Also, cost of transport in flying squirrels increased with velocity, although excess exercise oxygen consumption and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption did not. In contrast, oxygen consumption during exercise for fox squirrels was similar to predicted, varying from 0.51 (±0.02) ml O2 kg−1 s−1 at 0.63 m s−1 to 0.54 (±0.03) ml O2 kg−1 s−1 at 1.25 m s−1. In addition, the cost of transport for fox squirrels decreased with velocity, while excess exercise oxygen consumption and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption did not. Collectively, these observations suggest that unlike fox squirrels, flying squirrels are poorly adapted to prolonged bouts of quadrupedal locomotion. The evolution of skeletal adaptations to climbing, leaping, and landing and the development of a gliding membrane likely has increased the cost of quadrupedal locomotion by >50% while resulting in energy savings during gliding and reduction in travel time between foraging patches.  相似文献

The aims of the present study were: (1) to assess aerobic metabolism in paraplegic (P) athletes (spinal lesion level, T4–L3) by means of peak oxygen uptake (O2peak) and ventilatory threshold (VT), and (2) to determine the nature of exercise limitation in these athletes by means of cardioventilatory responses at peak exercise. Eight P athletes underwent conventional spirographic measurements and then performed an incremental wheelchair exercise on an adapted treadmill. Ventilatory data were collected every minute using an automated metabolic system: ventilation (l · min−1), oxygen uptake (O2, l · min−1, ml · min−1 · kg−1), carbon dioxide production (CO2, ml · min−1), respiratory exchange ratio, breathing frequency and tidal volume. Heart rate (HR, beats · min−1) was collected with the aid of a standard electrocardiogram. O2peak was determined using conventional criteria. VT was determined by the breakpoint in the CO2O2 relationship, and is expressed as the absolute VT (O2, ml · min−1 · kg−1) and relative VT (percentage of O2peak). Spirometric values and cardioventilatory responses at rest and at peak exercise allowed the measurement of ventilatory reserve (VR), heart rate reserve (HRr), heart rate response (HRR), and O2 pulse (O2 P). Results showed a O2peak value of 40.6 (2.5) ml · min−1 · kg−1, an absolute VT detected at 23.1 (1.5) ml · min−1 · kg−1 O2 and a relative VT at 56.4 (2.2)% O2peak. HRr [15.8 (3.2) beats · min−1], HRR [48.6 (4.3) beat · l−1], and O2 P [0.23 (0.02) ml · kg−1 · beat−1] were normal, whereas VR at peak exercise [42.7 (2.4)%] was increased. As wheelchair exercise excluded the use of an able-bodied (AB) control group, we compared our O2peak and VT results with those for other P subjects and AB controls reported in the literature, and we compared our cardioventilatory responses with those for respiratory and cardiac patients. The low O2peak values obtained compared with subject values obtained during an arm-crank exercise may be due to a reduced active muscle mass. Absolute VT was somewhat comparable to that of AB subjects, mainly due to the similar muscle mass involved in wheelchair and arm-crank exercise by P and AB subjects, respectively. The increased VR, as reported in patients with chronic heart failure, suggested that P athletes exhibited cardiac limitation at peak exercise, and this contributed to the lower O2peak measured in these subjects.  To investigate the role of fluid shifts during the short-term adjustment to acute hypobaric hypoxia (AHH), the changes in lower limb (LV) and forearm volumes (FV) were measured using a strain-gauge plethysmograph technique in ten healthy volunteers exposed to different altitudes (450 m, 2500 m, 3500 m, 4500 m) in a hypobaric chamber. Arterial blood pressure, heart rate, arterial oxygen saturation (S aO2), endtidal gases, minute ventilation and urine flow were also determined. A control experiment was performed with an analogous protocol under normobaric normoxic conditions. The results showed mean decreases both in LV and FV of −0.52 (SD 0.39) ml · 100 ml−1 and −0.65 (SD 0.32) ml · 100 ml−1, respectively, in the hypoxia experiments [controls: LV −0.28 (SD 0.37), FV −0.41 (SD 0.47) ml · 100 ml−1]. Descent to normoxia resulted in further small but not significant decreases in mean LV [−0.02 (SD 0.11) ml · 100 ml−1], whereas mean FV tended to increase slightly [ + 0.02 (SD 0.14) ml · 100 ml−1]; in the control experiments mean LV and FV decreased continuously during the corresponding times [−0.19 (SD 0.31), −0.18 (SD 0.10) ml · 100 ml−1, respectively]. During the whole AHH, mean urine flow increased significantly from 0.84 (SD 0.41) ml · min−1 to 3.29 (SD 1.43) ml · min−1 in contrast to the control conditions. We concluded that peripheral fluid volume shifts form a part of the hypoxia-induced acute cardiovascular changes at high altitude. In contrast to the often reported formation of peripheral oedema after prolonged exposure to hypobaric hypoxia, the results provided no evidence for the development of peripheral oedema during acute induction to high altitude. However, the marked increase in interindividual variance in S aO2 and urine flow points to the appearance of the first differences in the short-term adjustment even after 2 h of acute hypobaric hypoxia. Antarctic marine organisms are considered to have extremely limited ability to respond to environmental temperature change. However, here we show that the Antarctic notothenioid fish Pagothenia borchgrevinki is an exception to this theory. P. borchgrevinki was able to acclimate its resting metabolic rate and resting ventilation frequency after a 5°C rise in temperature. Acute exposure to 4°C resulted in an elevation in metabolic rate (57.8 ± 4.79 mg O2 kg−1 h−1) and resting ventilation rate (40.38 ± 1.61 breaths min−1) compared with fish at −1°C (metabolic rate 34.45 ± 3.12 mg O2 kg−1 h−1; ventilation rate 29.88 ± 3.72 breaths min−1). However, after a 1-month acclimation period, there was no significant difference in the metabolic rate (cold fish 29.52 ± 3.01; warm fish 31.13 ± 2.30 mg O2 kg−1 h−1), or the resting ventilation rate (cold fish 28.75 ± 0.98; warm fish 34.25 ± 2.28 breaths min−1) of cold and warm acclimated fish. Acclimation changes to the rate of oxygen consumption following exhaustive exercise were complex. The pattern of oxygen consumption during recovery from exhaustive exercise was not significantly different in either cold or warm acclimated fish.  相似文献

The influx of glucose into the brain and plasma glucose disappearance were estimated in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) intravenously injected (1 ml · kg−1 body weight) with a single dose (15 μCi · kg−1 body weight) of 3-O-methyl-D-[U-14C]glucose ([U-14C]-3-OMG) at different times (2–160 min), and after intravenous injection at 15 min of increased doses (10–60 μCi · kg−1 body weight) of [U-14C]-3-OMG. Brain and plasma radiotracer concentrations were measured, and several kinetic parameters were calculated. The apparent brain glucose influx showed a maximum after 15–20 min of injection then decreased to a plateau after 80 min. Brain distribution space of 3-OMG increased from 2 min to 20 min reaching equilibrium from that time onwards at a value of 0.14 ml · g−1. The unidirectional clearance of glucose from blood to brain (k1) and the fractional clearance of glucose from brain to blood (k2) were estimated to be 0.093 ml · min−1 · g−1, and 0.867 min−1, respectively. A linear increase was observed in brain and plasma radiotracer concentrations when increased doses of [U-14C]-3-OMG were used. All these findings support a facilitative transport of glucose through the blood-brain barrier of rainbow trout with characteristics similar to those observed in mammals. The injection of different doses of melatonin (0.25–1.0 mg · kg−1) significantly increased brain glucose influx suggesting a possible role for melatonin in the regulation of glucose transport into the brain. The present experiment was designed to study the importance of strength and muscle mass as factors limiting maximal oxygen uptake (O2 max ) in wheelchair subjects. Thirteen paraplegic subjects [mean age 29.8 (8.7) years] were studied during continuous incremental exercises until exhaustion on an arm-cranking ergometer (AC), a wheelchair ergometer (WE) and motor-driven treadmill (TM). Lean arm volume (LAV) was estimated using an anthropometric method based upon the measurement of various circumferences of the arm and forearm. Maximal strength (MVF) was measured while pushing on the rim of the wheelchair for three positions of the hand on the rim (−30°, 0° and +30°). The results indicate that paraplegic subjects reached a similar O2 max [1.23 (0.34) l · min−1, 1.25 (0.38) l · min−1, 1.22 (0.18) l · min−1 for AC, TM and WE, respectively] and O2 max /body mass [19.7 (5.2) ml · min−1 · kg−1, 19.5 (6.14) ml · min−1 · kg−1, 19.18 (4.27) ml · min−1 · kg−1 for AC, TM and WE, respectively on the three ergometers. Maximal heart rate f c max during the last minute of AC (173 (17) beats · min−1], TM [168 (14) beats · min−1], and WE [165 (16) beats · min−1], were correlated, but f c max was significantly higher for AC than for TM (P<0.03). There were significant correlations between MVF and LAV (P<0.001) and between the MVF data obtained at different angles of the hand on the rim [311.9 (90.1) N, 313.2 (81.2) N, 257.1 (71) N, at −30°, 0° and +30°, respectively]. There was no correlation between O2 max and LAV or MVF. The relatively low values of f c max suggest that O2 max was, at least in part, limited by local aerobic factors instead of central cardiovascular factors. On the other hand, the lack of a significant correlation between O2 max and MVF or muscle mass was not in favour of muscle strength being the main factor limiting O2 max in our subjects. The purposes of this study were to determine whether running economy (RE) is adversely affected following intense interval bouts of 10 × 400-m running, and whether there is an interaction effect between RE and recovery duration during the workouts. Twelve highly trained male endurance athletes [maximal oxygen consumption; O2 max =72.5 (4.3) ml·kg−1·min−1; mean (SD)] performed three interval running workouts of 10 × 400 m with a minimum of 4 days between runs. Recovery duration between the repetitions was randomly assigned at 60, 120 or 180 s. The velocity for each 400-m run was determined from a treadmill O2 max test. The average running velocity was 357.9 (9.0) m · min−1. Following the workout, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) increased significantly (P < 0.01) as recovery duration between the 400-m repetitions decreased (14.4, 16.1, and 17.7 at 180s, 120s, and 60 s recovery, respectively). Prior to and following each workout, RE was measured at speeds of 200 and 268 m · min−1. Changes in RE from pre- to post-workout, as well as heart rate (HR) and respiratory exchange ratio (R) were similar for the three recovery conditions. When averaged across conditions, oxygen consumption (O2) increased significantly (P < 0.01) from pre- to post-test (from 38.5 to 40.5 ml · kg−1 · min−1 at 200 m · min−1, and from 53.1 to 54.5 ml · kg−1 · min−1 at 268 m · min−1, respectively). HR increased (from 124 to 138, and from 151 to 157 beats · min−1 respectively) and R decreased (from 0.90 to 0.78, and from 0.93 to 0.89, respectively) at 200 and 268 m · min−1, respectively (P < 0.01). This study showed that RE can be perturbed after a high-intensity interval workout and that the changes in O2, HR and R were independent of the recovery duration between the repetitions. The efficiency of ethanol fermentation, as affected by grain source (maize and decorticated red sorghum), total sugar concentration (13 or 20° Plato) and type of microorganism (Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Zymomonas mobilis) was studied. Maize mashes yielded 0.32 l ethanol kg−1 ground grain whereas mashes prepared with decorticated red sorghum produced 0.28 l ethanol kg−1. Both microorganisms yielded similar amounts of ethanol. However, high-gravity mashes (20° Plato) yielded lower amounts of ethanol compared to counterparts adjusted to 13° Plato (0.28 vs. 0.22 l ethanol kg−1 ground grains). In decorticated sorghum mashes adjusted to 20° P, Z. mobilis produced 40 ml kg−1 more ethanol compared to S. cerevisiae. In addition, Z. mobilis had a lower dependency on nitrogenous compounds.  相似文献

Environmental conditions play a major role in shaping reptilian embryonic development, but studies addressing the impact of interactions between chronic and acute environmental stressors on embryonic systems are lacking. In the present study, we investigated thermal dependence of cholinergic and adrenergic cardiovascular tone in embryonic American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) and assessed possible phenotypic plasticity in a chronic hypoxic incubation treatment. We compared changes in heart rate (f H) and mean arterial blood pressure (P M) for chronically hypoxic and normoxic-incubated embryos after cholinergic and adrenergic blockade following three different acute temperature treatments: (1) 30 °C (control incubation temperature), (2) acute, progressive decrease 30–24 °C then held at 24 °C, and (3) acute, progressive increase 30–36 °C then held at 36 °C. f H progressively fell in response to decreasing temperature and rose in response to increasing temperature. P M did not significantly change with decreasing temperature, but was lowered significantly with increasing acute temperature in the normoxic group at 90 % of development only. Propranolol administration (β adrenergic antagonist) produced a significant f H decrease at 24, 30, and 36 °C that was similar at all temperatures for all groups. For normoxic-incubated embryos at 90 % of development, atropine administration (cholinergic antagonist) significantly increased f H in both 24 and 36 °C treatments, but not in the 30 °C control treatment. This atropine response at 24 and 36 °C demonstrated acute thermally dependent cholinergic tone on f H late in development for normoxic-incubated, but not chronically hypoxic-incubated embryos. Collectively, data indicated that cardiovascular control mechanisms in embryonic alligators may be activated by thermal extremes, and the maturation of control mechanisms was delayed by chronic hypoxia.  相似文献

Cardiac output, blood flow to the coeliac and mesenteric arteries, dorsal aortic blood pressure and heart rate were recorded simultaneously at rest and postprandial for 6 days in a teleost, the red Irish lord (Hemilepidotus hemilepidotus). We anticipated that gastrointestinal blood flow would increase postprandially, supported by an increase in cardiac output. However, we had no predictions for either the exact time-course of this response, or for the regional distribution of blood flow between to the two major arteries comprising the splanchnic circulation. In resting, unfed animals, blood flow to the coeliac artery and mesenteric artery was 4.1 ± 0.6 ml min−1 kg−1 and 4.9 ± 1.3 ml min−1 kg−1, respectively (mean ± SEM, n=7), which together represented 34% of cardiac output. Feeding increased blood flow to the coeliac and mesenteric arteries in a time-dependent manner. The increase in coeliac artery blood flow preceded that in the mesenteric artery, a finding that is consistent with the coeliac artery supplying blood to the liver and stomach, while the mesenteric artery supplies blood to the stomach and intestine. Coeliac blood flow had increased by 84 ± 18% after 1 day and had a peak increase of 112 ± 40% at day 4 postprandial. Mesenteric blood flow was not significantly elevated at day 1, but had increased by 94 ± 19% at day 4 postprandial. Cardiac output also increased progressively, increasing by a maximum of 90 ± 30% at day 4. Because the increase in cardiac output was adequate to meet the postprandial increase in gut blood flow, the postprandial decreases in vascular resistance for the coeliac and mesenteric circulations mirrored the increases in blood flow. Intra-arterial injections of adrenaline and noradrenaline into resting fish more than doubled coeliac and mesenteric vascular resistances, and blood flow decreased proportionately. This adrenergic vasoconstriction was totally abolished by pretreatment with the α-adrenoceptor antagonist phentolamine, which in itself approximately halved coeliac and mesenteric vascular resistances. These observations indicate a significant α-adrenergic tone in the gastrointestinal circulation of the red Irish lord, the loss of which could not entirely account for the postprandial increase in gastrointestinal blood flow. Other control mechanisms are suggested. Accepted: 17 November 1999  相似文献

Somatic embryogenesis can be induced in the leaves of cork oak (Quercus suber L.) trees. The use of this propagation system in multivarietal forestry requires the mass production of cloned plants at low cost. Investigations were made into the influence of three types of Erlenmeyer flask and three orbiting speeds (60, 110, and 160 rpm) on oxygen transfer rate (KL a), the shear force index (SFI), biomass production, and the proliferation of embryogenic clumps (EMCs) in cultures during the proliferation phase. KL a varied between 0.11 and 1.47 h−1 without biomass production being limited by oxygen availability. The EMCs grew even in hypoxic conditions, although the suppression of gaseous exchange strongly reduced biomass production. Cultures with different levels of hydrodynamic stress and SFI values (1.4·10−3–8.8·10−3 cm min−1) were obtained. Proliferation rates of EMCs increased with agitation rate and the SFI. The largest number of EMCs was obtained in baffled flasks agitated at 160 rpm (KL a of 1.47 h−1, and SFI of 8.8·10−3 cm min−1) with mild hydrodynamic stress enhancing growth. Biomass production increased with agitation and hydrodynamic stress, but only when the SFI value was below 5·10−3 cm min−1. The greatest biomass production was obtained in smooth 100 ml flasks agitated at 160 rpm. The differentiation of embryos was favoured by the lowest KL a (0.11 h−1) and SFI (1.40·103 cm min−1) values, achieved using these flasks when agitated at 60 rpm.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of N fertilization and the presence of N2 fixing leguminous trees on soil fluxes of greenhouse gases. For a one year period, we measured soil fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), related soil parameters (temperature, water-filled pore space, mineral nitrogen content, N mineralization potential) and litterfall in two highly fertilized (250 kg N ha−1 year−1) coffee cultivation: a monoculture (CM) and a culture shaded by the N2 fixing legume species Inga densiflora (CIn). Nitrogen fertilizer addition significantly influenced N2O emissions with 84% of the annual N2O emitted during the post fertilization periods, and temporarily increased soil respiration and decreased CH4 uptakes. The higher annual N2O emissions from the shaded plantation (5.8 ± 0.3 kg N ha−1 year−1) when compared to that from the monoculture (4.3 ± 0.1 kg N ha−1 year−1) was related to the higher N input through litterfall (246 ± 16 kg N ha−1 year−1) and higher potential soil N mineralization rate (3.7 ± 0.2 mg N kg−1 d.w. d−1) in the shaded cultivation when compared to the monoculture (153 ± 6.8 kg N ha−1 year−1 and 2.2 ± 0.2 mg N kg−1 d.w. d−1). This confirms that the presence of N2 fixing shade trees can increase N2O emissions. Annual CO2 and CH4 fluxes of both systems were similar (8.4 ± 2.6 and 7.5 ± 2.3 t C-CO2 ha−1 year−1, −1.1 ± 1.5 and 3.3 ± 1.1 kg C-CH4 ha−1 year−1, respectively in the CIn and CM plantations) but, unexpectedly increased during the dry season.  相似文献

Drinking in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) juveniles was investigated in fresh water and following transfer to sea water. There was a significant effect of fish size on drinking, and smolts (20–30 g) imbibed about ten times less water than alevins of 0.2–0.3 g. Freshwater smolts drank at a rate of 0.15 ± 0.03 ml · kg−1 · h−1 and administration of doses of 10 or 20 mg · kg−1 of papaverine (stimulator of the renin- angiotensin system RAS) or [Asn1, Val5]-Angiotensin II (0.4 μmol · kg−1) resulted in significant increases in drinking, while administration of the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, enalapril (50 mg · kg−1) had no effect on drinking. Transfer of Atlantic salmon smolts to 1/3, 2/3 and full strength sea water resulted in significant increases in drinking to 1.06 ± 0.12, 1.24 ± 0.0.16 and 3.89 ± 0.28 ml · kg−1 · h−1, respectively. In sea water, stimulation of the endogenous RAS by administration of papaverine (20 mg · kg−1) resulted in a 20% increase in drinking, while administration of enalapril to doses of 50 and 200 mg · kg−1 lowered drinking to 1.99 ± 0.48 and 0.32 ± 0.06 ml · kg−1 · h−1, respectively. All treatments were without effect on blood plasma levels of Na+ and Cl in fresh water, while in sea water smolts both stimulation and inhibition of drinking resulted in hemoconcentration of Na+ and Cl. The role of the renin angiotensin system in control of drinking and hydromineral balance in Atlantic salmon is discussed. Accepted: 27 February 1997  相似文献

In this study we measured growth and milk intake and calculated energy intake and its allocation into metabolism and stored tissue for hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) pups. In addition, we measured mass loss, change in body composition and metabolic rate during the first days of the postweaning fast. The mean body mass of the hooded seal pups (n = 5) at the start of the experiments, when they were new-born, was 24.3 ± 1.3 kg (SD). They gained an average of 5.9 ± 1.1. kg · day−1 of which 19% was water, 76% fat and 5% protein. This corresponds to an average daily energy deposition of 179.8 ± 16.0 MJ. The pups were weaned at an average body mass of 42.5 ± 1.0 kg 3.1 days after the experiment was initiated. During the first days of the postweaning fast the pups lost an average of 1.3 ± 0.5␣kg of body mass daily, of which 56% was water, 16% fat and 28% protein. During the nursing period the average daily water influx for the pups was 124.6 ± 25.8 ml · kg−1. The average CO2 production during this period was 1.10 ± 0.20 ml · g−1 · h−1, which corresponds to a field metabolic rate of 714 ± 130 kJ ·  kg−1 · day−1, or 5.8 ± 1.1 times the predicted basal metabolic rate according to Kleiber (1975). During the postweaning fast the average daily water influx was reduced to 16.1 ± 6.6 ml · kg−1. The average CO2 production in␣this period was 0.58 ± 0.17 ml · g−1 · h−1 which corresponds to a field metabolic rate of 375 ± 108 kJ · kg−1 · day−1 or 3.2 ± 0.9 times the predicted basal metabolic rate. Average values for milk composition were 33.5% water, 58.6% fat and 6.2% protein. The pups drank an average of 10.4 ± 1.8␣kg of milk daily, which represents an energy intake of 248.9 ± 39.1 MJ · day−1. The pups were able to store 73.2 ± 7.7% of this energy as body tissue. Activity concentrations of the selected radionuclides 40K, 226Ra and 232Th were measured in surface soil samples collected from 38 cities in the southwest region of Nigeria by means of gamma spectroscopy with a high-purity germanium detector. Measured activity concentration values of 40K varied from 34.9 ± 4.4 to 1,358.6 ± 28.5 Bq kg−1 (given on a dry mass (DM) basis) with a mean value of 286.5 ± 308.5 Bq kg−1; that of 226Ra varied from 9.3 ± 3.7 to 198.1 ± 13.8 Bq kg−1 with a mean value of 54.5 Bq kg−1 and a standard deviation of 38.7 Bq kg−1, while that of 232Th varied from 5.4 ± 1.1 to 502.0 ± 16.5 Bq kg−1 with a mean value of 91.1 Bq kg−1 and standard deviation of 100.9 Bq kg−1. The mean activity concentration values obtained for 226Ra and 232Th are greater than the world average values reported by the United Nations Scientific Committee on Effects of Atomic Radiation for areas of normal background radiation. Radiological indices were estimated for the radiation/health hazards of the natural radioactivity of all soil samples. Estimated absorbed dose rates in air varied from 12.42 ± 2.25 to 451.33 ± 19.06 nGy h−1, annual outdoor effective dose rates from 0.015 ± 0.003 to 0.554 ± 0.023 mSv year−1, internal hazard index from 0.10 ± 0.03 to 3.02 ± 0.16, external hazard index from 0.07 ± 0.01 to 2.60 ± 0.11, representative level index from 0.19 ± 0.03 to 6.84 ± 0.29, activity index from 0.09 ± 0.02 to 3.42 ± 0.15, and radium equivalent activity from 26.95 ± 5.04 to 963.15 ± 41.87 Bq kg−1. Only the mean value of the representative level index exceeds the limit for areas of normal background radiation. All other indices show mean values that are lower than the recommended limits.  相似文献

Antarctic fish, such as the Trematomus bernacchii, living at −1.9°C maintain a serum osmolality of around 600 mOsm kg−1, nearly twice that of temperate fish. Upon warm acclimation, Antarctic fish significantly lower their serum osmolality. It has been suggested that this response to warm acclimation is due to stress. The purpose of this study was to determine, whether upon warm acclimation there was a change in the levels of the stress hormone cortisol and hematocrit associated with the decrease in serum osmolality. T. bernacchii were warm acclimated up to 4 weeks and serum osmolality, cortisol and hematocrit were measured. Upon warm acclimation to +1.6 and +3.8°C over the course of 4 weeks, T. bernacchii significantly lowered their serum osmolality (from 547 ± 4 mOsm kg−1 to 494 ± 6 and 489 ± 4 mOsm kg−1, respectively), yet did not alter their serum cortisol (29 ± 6 nl ml−1) or hematocrit (22 ± 1%) levels. These results suggest that warm acclimation does not induce a stress response in T. bernacchii.  相似文献

Fifteen young adult Singaporean male physical education students maximum oxygen consumption [(O2max) = 56 (4.7) ml · kg−1 · min−1] performed three prolonged runs in a counterbalanced design. The running bouts varied in time (40 vs 60 min) and intensity (70% vs 80% O2 max ). Each prolonged run was separated by 7 days. The running economy (RE) at 10.8 km · h−1 during 10-min running bouts was measured before (RE1) and after (RE2) each prolonged run. A control study involved monitoring RE at 10.8 km · h−1 before and after 60 min rest. There were no differences between RE1 and RE2 values during the control run. However, there were differences between RE1 and RE2 values when separated by a prolonged run. For example, the mean (SD) changes in oxygen consumption (ml · kg−1 · min−1) values were 38.2 (2.5) versus 40.1 (2.6) (40 min at 80% O2 max ), 38.9 (2.8) versus 41.5 (2.6) (60 min at 70% O2 max ), and 39.0 (3.1) versus 42.7 (2.9) (60 min at 80% O2 max ; P < 0.01). The results of this investigation support the hypothesis that RE deteriorates during prolonged running, and that the magnitude of the deterioration in RE increases with both increasing exercise intensity and duration. We used tritium-labeled water to measure total body water, water influx (which approximated oxidative water production) and water efflux in free-flying tippler pigeons (Columba livia) during flights that lasted on average 4.2 h. At experimental air temperatures ranging from 18 to 27 °C, mean water efflux by evaporation and excretion [6.3 ± 1.3 (SD) ml · h−1, n = 14] exceeded water influx from oxidative water and inspired air (1.4 ± 0.7 ml · h−1, n = 14), and the birds dehydrated at 4.9 ± 0.9 ml · h−1. This was not significantly different from gravimetrically measured mass loss of 6.2 ± 2.1 g · h−1 (t = 1.902, n = 14, P>0.05). This flight-induced dehydration resulted in an increase in plasma osmolality of 4.3 ± 3.0 mosmol · kg−1 · h−1 during flights of 3–4 h. At 27 °C, the increase in plasma osmolality above pre-flight levels (ΔP osm = 7.6±4.29 mosmol · kg−1 · h−1, n = 6) was significantly higher than that at 18 °C (ΔP osm = 0.83±2.23 mosmol · kg−1 · h−1, (t = 3.43, n = 6, P < 0.05). Post-flight haematocrit values were on average 1.1% lower than pre-flight levels, suggesting plasma expansion. Water efflux values during free flight were within 9% of those in the one published field study (Gessaman et al. 1991), and within the range of values for net water loss determined from mass balance during wind tunnel experiments (Biesel and Nachtigall 1987). Our net water loss rates were substantially higher than those estimated by a simulation model (Carmi et al. 1992) suggesting some re-evaluation of the model assumptions is required.
