Ontogenetic changes in morphometric and reproductive indices were studied using 166 individuals of the arctic gonatid squid Gonatus fabricii (7.3–322 mm pen length) collected in the southern part of the Norwegian Sea. Body proportions and consistency of the mantle and fins did not change in maturing and mature males. In contrast, during maturation the females first lost their tentacles, then the horny rings of their 4th arm suckers, and the muscular part of their body turned watery and gelatinous. Unlike most squid, G. fabricii females start mating at maturity stage III, and all but one female at stage IV had mated, as well as all spent females. Females had high values of both gonadosomatic index and maturity indices compared to those of the North Pacific gonatids, whereas gonadosomatic index values of males were low, probably due to slow functioning of both testis and spermatophoric gland, and long accumulation of spermatophores in the Needham's sac. It is suggested that the breakdown of female body tissues is an adaptation for a deepwater bathypelagic “brooding” of the negatively buoyant egg-mass caused by the high specific density of the secretion from the nidamental glands in gonatids. Statolith microstructure was studied in two abundant planktoniccranchiids, Cranchia scabra (56 specimens, 38–127 mm mantlelength, ML) and Liocranchia reinhardti (34 specimens, 99–205mm ML) sampled in epipelagic waters of the western part of theGulf of Guinea (tropical Atlantic). Growth increments were revealedin ground statoliths of both species. It was possible to distinguishtwo growth zones in statolith microstructure by their colourin reflected light of the microscope: the translucent postnuclearzone and pale white opaque zone. Assuming that growth incrementsin statoliths were produced daily, ages of the largest immatureC.scabra and L.reinhardti were 166 and 146 days, respectively. Both cranchiids are fast-growing squids with growth rates inlength resembling those of juveniles of tropical ommastrephidsand Thysanoteuthis rhombus. Liocranchia reinhardti grows faster:its growth rate in ML is approximately twice that of same-agedC.scabra. The life cycle of both cranchiids consists of twophases. During their epipelagic phase, C.scabra and L.reinhardtifeed and grow rapidly from paralarvae to immature young in theepipelagic waters, attaining 120–130 and 170–200mm ML by ages of 4–5 months, respectively. Then they changetheir life style to a deepwater phase.  相似文献

Statolith morphology and microstructure were studied in twocommon species of panktonic cranchiid squids, Belonella borealis[four juveniles with mantle length (ML) 375–450 mm] andGaliteuthis phyllura (13 paralarvae and juveniles, ML 9–235mm),caught near the bottom and in pelagic layers over the continentalslope of Siberia in the northwest Bering Sea. The total numberof growth increments within the statoliths ranged from 277 to294 in B.borealis and from 10 to 209 in G.phyllura. Assumingthat these increments were produced daily, both species growrapidly in length (daily growth rate = 1.13mm day–1 duringthe first 8–10 months of their juvenile phase in the mesopelagiclayers, prior to migration into deeper waters for maturation.  相似文献

We have applied the novel analytical method NanoSIMS to cephalopod statoliths for the first time in order to analyse their chemical microstructure, using a spatial resolution of 400 nm. This technique makes it possible to analyse in situ nano-scale chemical variations between increment layers. In statoliths of the boreoatlantic armhook squid Gonatus fabricii, we found distinct concentration patterns indicating a periodicity in strontium and sodium distributions. Sr and Na show a negative relation, both elements showing alternating patterns where the increments vary in width between approximately 1 and 5 μm. Results suggest, that aragonite deposited during the night is rich in Na and poor in Sr, while aragonite deposited during the day is rich in Sr and poor in Na. This study demonstrates the excellent suitability of NanoSIMS for nano-scale microchemical analyses of aragonite, providing new information on calcification processes and individual life histories. Possible future fields of application include not only cephalopod statoliths, but also virtually all biomineralized tissues in aquatic organisms like fish otoliths, gastropod statoliths, bivalve shells, foraminifers and corals.  相似文献

Embryonic, larval, and juvenile development of two cyprinid species belonging to the Zacco temminckii species' group, Z. temminckii (Temminck and Schlegel) and Zacco sp. (type A), are described and compared with each other from laboratory-reared and wild specimens. The eggs of both species were closely similar except in diameter [1.92–2.20 mm in Z. temminckii vs. 1.60–1.75 mm in Z. sp. (type A)], being demersal, almost spherical in shape, transparent and unpigmented, with a pale yellow yolk, and no oil globule. Hatching occurred 40–53 h after fertilization in Z. temminckii and after 47–60 h in Z. sp. (type A). The newly hatched larvae of both species [4.9–5.3 mm in body length (BL) in Z. temminckii and 3.5–4.8 mm BL in Z. sp. (type A)] also resembled each other, having a large transparent pear-shaped yolk and lacking body pigmentation. Myomere counts of Z. temminckii and Z. sp. (type A) larvae and juveniles were 24–27 + 14–17 = 41–42 and 23–27 + 14–17 = 40–41, respectively. The yolk was completely absorbed at 8.3 mm BL in Z. temminckii and at 6.6 mm BL in Z. sp. (type A). Notochord flexion was initiated and completed at 7.8 mm BL and 8.2 mm BL in Z. temminckii and at 6.3 mm BL and 6.6 mm BL in Z. sp. (type A), respectively. Aggregate numbers of all fin rays were completed at 17 mm BL in Z. temminckii and 13 mm BL in Z. sp. (type A). Although the morphology of larvae and juveniles of both species was very similar, differences in body length of each developmental stage, the duration and process of disappearance of the adipose finfold, the anal fin ray counts, and pigmentation on the lateral body surface were clearly recognized. Summary. The noninvasive infrared laser micromanipulation technique (optical tweezers, optical trapping) and centrifugation were used to study susception and perception, the early events in the gravitropic pathway of tip-growing characean rhizoids and protonemata. Reorientation of the growth direction in both cell types was only initiated when at least 2–3 statoliths settled on specific areas of the plasma membrane. This statolith-sensitive plasma membrane area is confined to the statolith region (10–35 μm behind the tip) in positively gravitropic rhizoids, whereas in negatively gravitropic protonemata, this area is limited to the apical plasma membrane (0–10 μm). Statolith sedimentation towards the sensitive plasma membrane areas is mediated by the concerted action of actin and gravity. The process of sedimentation, the pure physical movement, of statoliths is not sufficient to initiate graviresponses in both cell types. It is concluded that specific statolith-sensitive plasma membrane areas play a crucial role in the signal transduction pathway of gravitropism. These areas may represent the primary sites for gravity perception and may transform the information derived from the gravity-induced statolith sedimentation into physiological signals which trigger the molecular mechanisms of the opposite graviresponses in characean rhizoids and protonemata. Chiropsalmus sp. medusae collected in this study ranged from 3 to 71 mm diagonal bell width and displayed growth best described by the following equation size (mm) = 74.9 × exp (−exp(0.041 (time since metamorphosis (day) −35.6674))). Growth rates of up to 7 mm week−1 increase in diagonal bell width are theoretically possible, with animals able to reach sexual maturity in approximately 70 days. Correlation of the number of rings on the statoliths with the predicted age of the individual from the field produced a relationship that indicates the growth rings are laid down daily and as such could be used to infer age of the medusae. Over the 1998–1999 season, there were four influxes of juvenile cohorts, each occurring approximately 14 days after a major rainfall event.  相似文献

Embryonic and larval development of an Indian cyprinid fish, Barilius canarensis, is described from laboratory-reared specimens. The eggs, measuring 2.1–2.4 mm in diameter, were demersal, almost spherical in shape, transparent and unpigmented, with a pale yellow yolk without oil globules. Hatching occurred 39–45 h after fertilization at 26.8°–27.4°C. The newly hatched larvae, measuring 4.8–5.1 mm in body length (BL) with 22 + 17 = 39 myomeres, were characterized by melanophores already deposited on the eyes. The eggs of B. canarensis resembled those of the related danionin species Candidia barbatus, Opsariichthys uncirostris uncirostris, Zacco platypus, Z. sieboldii, and Z. temminckii. Although the larvae of B. canarensis were also similar to those of the foregoing species in general morphology, they differed in having a straight notochord tip and pigmentation on the eyes at hatching and the almost entire absence of melanophores on the ventral body surface from the yolk sac to postflexion larval stages. Conversely, melanophores occurred on the anterior abdominal and pericardial cavities from the preflexion to postflexion larval stages.  相似文献

Sectioned otoliths were used to estimate the age of 29 specimens of the smooth oreo (Pseudocyttus maculatus Gilchrist 1906) from the Falkland Islands region of the South Atlantic. This represents the first ageing study of this species in this region of the world. All specimens were immature (sub-adults), the largest having a maximum total length of 347 mm. Growth increments were observed in sectioned otoliths and assumed to be annual in periodicity. The maximum age estimate of individuals in this study was 20 years and the form of somatic growth was similar to previous research on this species from Australian waters. The otolith microstructure consisted of an inner, mostly opaque zone with wide increments followed by an outer, mostly translucent zone with narrower increments. It is suggested that these zones correspond to the two growth phases in the life history of this species, namely the pelagic juvenile phase (opaque zone) and the demersal sub-adult/adult phase (translucent zone). Age, growth, and reproductive biology of the Waigieu seaperch Psammoperca waigiensis were studied using 291 specimens obtained around Okinawa Island, Japan. Otolith opaque zones that formed every year correlated with spawning activity and were thought to be annual rings. Growth of this species was rapid during the first 2 years, reaching 186.2–270.3 mm in standard length (SL). Females (196.6–334.0 mm SL) were larger than males (186.2–288.6 mm SL), caused by differential growth between sexes, which started before 2 years of age. Most of the specimens were 1–11 years old and accounted for 96% in total. Spawning season was estimated to be from April to October by gonadosomatic index (GSI) and histological observation. The smallest mature female and male were 217.0 mm SL (2 years) and 206.0 mm SL (2 years), respectively. After recruitment in rocky areas up to about 200.0 mm SL and 2 years of age, Psammoperca waigiensis were then found to soon mature.  相似文献

Morphology and microstructure of the gladius and statolith were studied from 11 specimens of the boreal Pacific giant squid Moroteuthis robusta (mantle length (ML) ranging from 97.5 to 141.5cm) captured on the slope of the north-west Bering Sea in summer and autumn 1993. The most specific feature of the M. robusta gladius is a large and, in cross-section, round rostrum which has been found to be homologous to that of extinct Belemnitida. The functional morphology of the different gladius elements is discussed. Distinct growth increments have been revealed in all three gladius layers in M. robusta. Comparison of peculiarities of microstructure of growth increments, their ways of deposition and their numbers in different gladius layers has shown that all three layers in the M. robusta gladius grow synchronously. M. robusta statoliths are tiny (0.07-0.1% ML) and resemble in shape those of the ommastrephid Illex argentinus. It was impossible to count the total number of growth increments within the statoliths, owing to their complete disappearance in the outer portion of the peripheral zone, and therefore impossible to estimate the age of the M. robusta by using the statolith ageing technique. However, assuming the deposition of growth increments within the gladius as daily, the age of the specimens analysed may vary from 413 to 520 days.  相似文献

Satellite-linked dive recorders were used to collect data on depths and durations of ∼120,000 dives by 16 hooded seals (Cystophora cristata). Following tagging after moult (four males, eight females) and breeding (four females) off east Greenland, seals dispersed widely in the northeast Atlantic during 172 ± 97 days (mean satellite-linked dive recorder lifetime ± SD). Meso/bathypelagic dives of 5- to 25-min duration to 100–600 m dominated (75%), but some very deep (≥1016 m) and long (>52 min) dives occurred. Diving in open ocean was continuous, with an estimated 90.7±0.8% (mean±SE) of time spent submerged. The proportion of time spent submerged was similar during night and day, but dives during the day were generally deeper and longer (P < 0.05) than during the night. Also, dives in winter were deeper and longer than in summer. Published data on the distribution of likely prey suggest that Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides), redfish (Sebastes spp.), polar cod (Boreogadus saida), herring (Clupea harengus), squid (Gonatus fabricii) and blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou) are important prey of hooded seals. The morphology of eggs and larvae of Awaous melanocephalus is described. The eggs measured 0.33–0.35 mm in long-axis diameter and 0.32–0.34 mm in short-axis diameter. Newly hatched larvae (0.90–0.99 mm in notochord length, NL; 0.93–1.04 mm in total length, TL) were poorly developed, lacking a mouth and having a large yolk sac and unpigmented eyes. The mouth opened and the eyes became fully pigmented 3 days after hatching (1.78–2.00 mm NL, 1.88–2.10 mm TL). The yolk sac was completely absorbed 5 days after hatching at a water temperature of 27°–28°C.  相似文献

Naturally spawned eggs of the Pacific saury,Cololabis saira, were collected in the field and reared in a tank to examine daily periodicity of growth increment formation in the otolith. Larvae were 6.9 mm in knob length at hatching. Their otoliths (sagittae) were 31 μm in radius and had 3–6 faint concentric rings. They started feeding within two days and grew at a rate of 1.1 mm/day on average through larval and juvenile stages feeding on rotifers,Artemia nauplii, and artificial diets. Otolith growth increments showed a concentric pattern with a distance of 3.5–5.0 μm between two adjacent increments. The number of growth increments was almost equal to a known age in days plus 4 or 5. A regression line of number of increments (N) on known age in days (D) between 0–30 days after hatching was N = 4.81 + 1.01D, which shows that one increment was deposited per day.  相似文献

A new species Dolichopteryx minuscula is described on the basis of three specimens [49.4–59.6 mm in standard length (SL)] collected from the Indo-West Pacific. The new species is characterized by pouchlike eyes with a small lens (lens diameter 2.2% SL), an adipose fin, the anal fin base originating posterior to the dorsal fin base, and 16–17 (= 5–6 + 1 + 10–11) gill rakers. Total fecundity was relatively low, only 658 ova being obtained from one specimen, despite the ovary being mature. Ovarian eggs were clearly subdivided into “undeveloped” (0.1–0.7 mm diameter classes, n = 561) and “developed” (1.0–1.3 mm classes, n = 97) groups, based on their frequency distribution. Such relatively low fecundity and frequency distributions of ovarian eggs suggest that Dolichopteryx species spawn iteratively during spawning season.  相似文献

The early life stages of the diamond squid Thysanoteuthis rhombusfrom early embryogenesis to post-hatching (0–7 days old)were observed through laboratory incubation using egg massescollected in the southern Sea of Japan. The egg diameter andmantle length increased during embryonic development throughhatching. Mantle-length growth was linear over time, and thegrowth rate was significantly higher at 25°C than at 20°C.The inner yolk was located on the dorsal side of the mantlecavity and increased in volume through hatching. Immediatelyafter they hatched, the hatchlings remained on the bottom ofculture plates with their ventral sides facing up, but 2–3days after hatching they began to swim with their dorsal sidesfacing up. Feeding experiments were conducted, but none of thehatchlings fed. Statolith growth increments were shown to formdaily. Ontogenetic changes that occur from fertilization throughpost-hatching are discussed. (Received 8 June 2005; accepted 2 November 2005)  相似文献

Reproductive biology and morphology of eggs and early larvae of the sicydiine goby Stiphodon percnopterygionus were investigated on Okinawa Island, southern Japan. Spawning season was estimated as being from May to December. Standard length at maturity was approximately 20 mm in both sexes, and batch fecundity was approximately 1000–10 000 per female. The egg masses, guarded by the male, were laid on the undersurface of stones in freshwater. The pyriform eggs had long- and short-axis diameters of 0.54–0.58 mm and 0.49–0.50 mm, respectively. Newly hatched larvae (1.20–1.32 mm notochord length: NL) were poorly developed, with large yolk sacs and unopened mouths. Three days after hatching (1.87–2.05 mm NL), eyes were fully pigmented and mouths were opened. An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

To estimate the age and growth of dominant lanternfishes in the Kuroshio–Oyashio Transition Zone, we examined the sagittal otolith microstructure of Symbolophorus californiensis (n = 30) and Ceratoscopelus warmingii (n = 93) collected from the western North Pacific during 1997–2003. Age of S. californiensis ranged from 81 to 541 days corresponding to postmetamorphosis stage (juveniles and adults), and the von Bertalanffy model was fitted: L t  = 128[1 − exp{−0.003(t − 1.52)}], where L is the standard length (mm) and t is age in days. Age of C. warmingii ranged from 6 to 416 days, and growth before metamorphosis was linear (L t  = 0.346t + 1.51), and the von Bertalanffy model was fitted to the postmetamorphosis stage: L t  = 80.8 [1 − exp{−0.00769(t − 34.4)}]. Growth of these two lanternfishes was faster than that of other lanternfishes in previous studies but considerably slower than that of Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus) and anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) distributed in the Kuroshio–Oyashio Transition Zone. Temperature and prey availability are discussed in relation to this difference in growth rate.  相似文献

To ascertain the feeding habits of benthic juvenile yellowfin goby Acanthogobius flavimanus, the gut contents of 599 specimens (15–41 mm in standard length, SL), collected on a tidal mudflat in the Tama River estuary throughout the diel cycle, were examined. The major prey items changed from harpacticoid copepods to errant and sedentary polychaetes at ca. 20 mm SL. Prey width increased with fish size. Fish of 26–28 mm SL fed mainly from sunset to morning, with highest feeding intensity during twilight hours and/or high tide. Based on the gut evacuation rate estimated from a forced feeding experiment in the laboratory and data for the diel change of mean gut-content volume in the field, the daily ration of juvenile yellowfin goby (26–28 mm SL) was calculated to be 13.8 mm3 fish−1 day−1. This volume is approximately equivalent to 3.9 individuals of the errant polychaete Ceratonereis erythraeensis (9.7 mm in body length, BL) or 8.1 individuals of the sedentary polychaete Prionospio japonica (14.8 mm BL), both species occurring abundantly on the mudflat during the study.  相似文献

Morphological and genetic differences between red and yellow morphotypes of Sebastes owstoni were investigated, utilizing 277 males [84.0–194.3 mm in standard length (SL)] and 542 females (92.3–251.5 mm SL) from the Sea of Japan. All males smaller than 120 mm SL were characterized by red body color. The frequency of specimens with yellow body color thereafter increased gradually with SL, all specimens larger than 170 mm SL being yellow. The specimens with yellow body color were observed throughout the year. All females smaller than 170 mm SL were characterized by red body color, the frequency of specimens with yellow body color tending to slightly increase with SL. However, most females had red body color, except for 16 specimens (177.7–241.5 mm SL) that were yellow, growth-related color change from red to yellow being uncommon. Morphological analysis of 49 males (107.6–193.3 mm SL) and 68 females (108.7–241.5 mm SL) showed the head length, orbit diameter, lower jaw length, and predorsal length to be relatively greater, but the distance between the pelvic and anal fins less, in males. A discriminant analysis using Mahalanobis distances resulted in 100% correct assignment of specimens to sex, regardless of SL and body color. In addition, no genetic differences were apparent between red and yellow individuals in mitochondrial DNA sequence analyses from the threonine tRNA to the first half of the control region (498 bp). Accordingly, the differences in body color, maximum size, and the five morphometric characters listed above were considered to represent sexual dimorphism. That evidenced by body color was considered to appear after that shown by morphometric characters, some exceptions in the former occurring in females. This is the first report of permanent sexual dimorphism in body color in Sebastes.  相似文献
