The structures on leaf surfaces, e.g. trichomes, can act as effective antiherbivory mechanisms as chemical repellents. Structural defences usually represent constitutive resistance, but there are also a few cases of inducible morphological defences. We tested whether defoliation may induce changes in trichome production in white birch (Betula pubescens). The studied birches were either 0, 50 or 100% defoliated during the previous or current summer, and we measured the alterations in the production of glandular vs. nonglandular leaf trichomes, developmental instability (fluctuating asymmetry, FA) and leaf and shoot growth. We detected a clear shift from glandular to nonglandular leaf trichomes following previous‐year defoliation but not after current‐year defoliation. Furthermore, the density of nonglandular trichomes around the mid‐vein of leaves increased following previous‐year defoliation but decreased after current‐year defoliation. While leaf and shoot growth showed a distinct decrease in response to defoliation, FA turned out to be less sensitive. Consequently, previous‐year defoliation can induce the production of nonglandular trichomes in birch leaves. Because this response was accompanied by a reduction in glandular trichomes, the present results may suggest a trade‐off between the different trichome types of birch leaves.  相似文献

The morphology and distribution of leaf trichomes of Tetradenia riparia were studied using light and scanning microscopy. Three morphologically distinct types of trichomes were observed on T. riparia leaf surfaces: glandular capitate (short and long stalked), peltate and non-glandular. The glandular and non-glandular trichomes were present in abundance on both the adaxial and abaxial surfaces. Young leaves were densely covered with trichomes; however, the density of trichomes decreases progressively with leaf maturity. This suggests that the trichomes are established early in leaf differentiation and their density decreases with leaf development and age.  相似文献

Selected behavior of Empoasca fabae (Harris) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) was examined to elucidate resistance of commercially-available glandular-haired alfalfa to this key forage pest. The overall objective was to assess the effects of the glandular trichomes on the behavior of nymphs and adults. Studies of host-plant acceptance by E. fabae nymphs found first and third instars to show a higher degree of change in settling location on the glandular-haired FGplh13 alfalfa than on the nonglandular P5373 alfalfa. Nymphs also cleaned their tarsi more frequently when in contact with the glandular trichomes on FGplh13 alfalfa, and in addition a larger number of nymphs jumped/fell off the surface of FGplh13 alfalfa. The glandular trichomes on FGplh13 also impeded nymphal mobility more effectively than the nonglandular trichomes on P5373. No choice, time-course analysis of adult host-plant acceptance behavior found that adults settled less frequently on FGplh13 alfalfa with the glandular trichomes intact, than on either FGplh13 with the glandular trichomes removed, or P5373 alfalfa with the nonglandular trichomes intact or removed. Free choice, time-course analysis of adult host-preference behavior determined that at each observation, stems of the nonglandular P5373 alfalfa were preferred over FGplh13 alfalfa. Similarly, at each observation, stems of FGplh13 alfalfa with the glandular trichomes removed were preferred over FGplh13 with the glandular trichomes intact. These data provide additional evidence for the localization of a resistance factor in the glandular trichomes of FGplh13 alfalfa. An antixenotic resistance mechanism also appears to be present, which may function, in part, through a tactile avenue.  相似文献

The Tertiary relic genus Catalpa, containing 11 Old and New World species, has multiple nectaries in the junctions of the major veins on the lower leaf surfaces. The generalized structure of the nectaries consists of a single, basal cell, and a single row of vertically oriented secretory cells. The nectaries are small, and contain no vascular tissue. Glandular and nonglandular trichomes are also present on the leaves. The glandular trichomes are structurally very similar to the nectaries, and probably are their precursors. Development of multiple nectaries in the lower leaf surface vein axils is considered to be an advanced strategy for attracting beneficial insects to control or minimize the effects of herbivorous insects. Chinese and American species of Catalpa are closely related, and have greater numbers of nectaries in more locations on the lower leaf surface than west Indian species. Herbivory pressures in the West Indies are postulated to be lower than on the continents, i.e. Asia and North America.  相似文献

Foliar micromorphology of Solanum pseudocapsicum was investigated by electron microscopical examination. The leaves are characterized by anisocytic stomata which are more abundant on the abaxial surfaces. The leaves have short multicellular glandular trichomes sparsely distributed over the entire leaf surfaces. Crystal deposits were also observed on the surfaces above the stomata. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy-SEM showed that Al, K, Na and Si were the major constituents of the crystals analyzed. The presence of glandular trichomes in this plant could be the source of poisonous compounds that are characteristic of this species.  相似文献

New cultivars of alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., have been released with glandular trichomes for resistance to potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae (Harris). Yet, the impact of the glandular trichomes on the primary natural enemy of the leafhopper, Anagrus nigriventris Girault, is unknown. We compared the host searching behavior of the egg parasitoid on four alfalfa clones varying in trichome characters. Female wasps were videotaped on Ranger, a susceptible clone with relatively sparse trichomes, B14, a resistant clone with dense but nonglandular trichomes, and FG12 and FG18, two resistant clones with glandular trichomes. Although the number of leafhopper eggs per stem exposed to wasps did not significantly differ among the four clones, the frequency of foraging and total foraging time were less on the two clones with glandular trichomes than on the two clones with nonglandular trichomes. In addition, an analysis of covariance demonstrated that, although the number of ovipositional probes increased with egg density on a stem, the number of probes on stems with glandular trichomes was significantly less than that on stems without glandular trichomes. The allocation of time by wasps among drumming, probing, and grooming behaviors was similar among the clones. Wasps tended to fly off of clones with glandular trichomes more often than off of clones with nonglandular trichomes. This study suggests that cultivars with glandular trichomes may interfere with host searching by A. nigriventris.  相似文献

Plants within the Lamiaceae are characterized by their production of essential oils, largely composed of monoterpenoids. They also possess on their aerial surfaces different types of trichomes, including relatively large peltate glandular trichomes. Observation of leaves of the catmint Nepeta racemosa , using cryogenic scanning electron microscopy, showed that around 3000 peltate trichomes are present on a single expanded leaf. An approach has been developed for sampling directly from the subcuticular cavity of such trichomes, in order to characterize qualitatively and quantitatively their contents. Gland samples from Nepeta spp. were analysed by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. These analyses have confirmed that the monoterpenoids characteristic of these species (nepetalactones) accumulate within the subcuticular cavity of peltate glandular trichomes. Qualitative analysis showed that three different nepetalactone stereoisomers were accumulated in different proportions in peltate glands from individual N. racemosa plants. Quantitative analysis showed that individual peltate glands accumulate around 30 ng of nepetalactone by maturity, and that accumulation of nepetalactone probably occurs exclusively within this gland type.  相似文献

The morphology, ultrastructure, density and distribution of trichomes on leaves of Betula pendula, B. pubescens ssp. pubescens, B. pubescens ssp. czerepanovii and B. nana were examined by means of light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The composition of flavonoids in ethanolic leaf surface extracts was analysed by high pressure liquid chromatography. All taxa examined contained both glandular and non-glandular trichomes (short and/or long hairs) but differed from each other in trichome ultrastructure, density and location on the leaf. Leaves of B. pubescens were more hairy than those of B. pendula, but the latter species had a higher density of glandular trichomes. Of the two subspecies of B. pubescens, leaves of ssp. pubescens had more short hairs on the leaf surface and four times the density of glandular trichomes of leaves of ssp. czerepanovii, whereas, in the latter subspecies, short hairs occurred largely on leaf veins, as in B. nana. The glandular trichomes were peltate glands, consisting of medullar and cortical cells, which differed structurally. Cortical cells possessed numerous small, poorly developed plastids and small vacuoles, whereas medullar cells had several large plastids with well-developed thylakoid systems and fewer vacuoles. In B. pubescens subspecies, vacuoles of the glandular cells contained osmiophilic deposits, which were probably phenolic, whereas in B. pendula, vacuoles of glandular trichomes were characterized by the presence of numerous myelin-like membranes. The composition of epicuticular flavonoids also differed among species. The two subspecies of B. pubescens and B. nana shared the same 12 compounds, but five of these occurred only in trace amounts in B. nana. Leaf surface extracts of B. pendula contained just six flavonoids, three of which occurred only in this species. In summary, the structure, density and distribution of leaf trichomes and the composition of epicuticular flavonoids represent good taxonomic markers for Finnish birch species.  相似文献

Cotton leaves are more physiologically active than the bractand the capsule wall of the fruiting structures. To elucidatethe disparities in their physiological behaviour, epidermalcell density, stomatal index, stomatal size, trichome densityand type, and epicuticular wax ultrastructure of cotton leaf, bract and capsule wall were delineated using scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM). The epidermal cells of the outer periclinalwalls on both surfaces of the leaf and bract were raised andconvex. Conversely, the capsule wall epidermal cells were polygonalwith flat outer periclinal walls. The stomatal complex in theleaf and bract was paracytic, whereas in the capsule wall thestomatal complex was anomocytic. The adaxial and abaxial stomataof the leaf were coplanar to the epidermal surface, as opposedto the raised adaxial stomata on the bract. On the contrary, the stomata on the capsule wall surface appeared to be slightlysunken. Furthermore, the capsule wall stomata were larger thanthe stomata on either surface of both the leaf and the bract. The stomatal index was greater on the abaxial surfaces of theleaf and the bract (18.4 and 9.4, respectively) than their correspondingadaxial surfaces (14.4 and 4.7, respectively). Leaves had thehighest stomatal index followed by the bract and the capsulewall. The indumentum consisted of glandular and nonglandulartrichomes, the density of which was greater on the abaxial surfacesthan on the adaxial surfaces of the leaf and bract. The capsulewall indumentum lacked nonglandular trichomes. Epicuticularwax occurred in the form of striations. However, the striationpattern varied among the organs. This study clearly illustratesmorphological disparities in the epidermal features of leaf, bract and capsule wall, helping to explain their physiologicaldivergence. The leaf epidermis of 14 species ofCodonanthe and 10 species of Nematanthus has been examined. Species of Codonanthe section Codonanthe are geographically restricted to south-eastern Brazil, and are diploid. They possess multicellular-uniseriate nonglandular trichomes, glandular trichomes with a four-celled head and a short body, anisocytic stomata and lack extrafloral nectaries. Species of Codonanthe section Spathuliformae and Codonanthe subgenus Codonanthella are distributed from southern Mexico through Central America to north-western South America and are tetraploid. They possess unicellular non-glandular trichomes (except C. caribaea), glandular trichomes with a two-celled head (except C. caribaea) and a short body, anisocytic stomata and extrafloral nectaries (except C. caribaea). All Nematanthus species are distributed in south-eastern Brazil and are diploid (N=8). Six species of Nematanthus consistently have multicellular-uniseriate nonglandular trichomes, glandular trichomes with a four-celled head and a short (unicellular) or long (multicellular) body, anisocytic stomata and lack extrafloral nectaries. Four species of Nematanthus have multicellular-uniseriate non-glandular trichomes, glandular trichomes with a head of more than four cells and a short body, anisocytic and helicocytic stomata and lack extrafloral nectaries.  相似文献

The primary monoterpene accumulated in the glandular trichomes of spearmint (Mentha spicata) is the ketone (−)-carvone which is formed by cyclization of the C10 isoprenoid intermediate geranyl pyrophosphate to the olefin (−)-limonene, hydroxylation to (−)-trans-carveol and subsequent dehydrogenation. Selective extraction of the contents of the glandular trichomes indicated that essentially all of the cyclase and hydroxylase activities resided in these structures, whereas only about 30% of the carveol dehydrogenase was located here with the remainder located in the rest of the leaf. This distribution of carveol dehydrogenase activity was confirmed by histochemical methods. Electrophoretic analysis of the partially purified carveol dehydrogenase from extracts of both the glands and the leaves following gland removal indicated the presence of a unique carveol dehydrogenase species in the glandular trichomes, suggesting that the other dehydrogenase found throughout the leaf probably utilizes carveol only as an adventitious substrate. These results demonstrate that carvone biosynthesis takes place exclusively in the glandular trichomes in which this natural product accumulates.  相似文献

The micromorphology of foliar trichomes of Hypoestes aristata var. aristata was studied using stereo, light and scanning microscopy (SEM). This genus belongs to the advanced angiosperm family Acanthaceae, for which few micromorphological leaf studies exist. Results revealed both glandular and non-glandular trichomes, the latter being more abundant on leaf veins, particularly on the abaxial surface of very young leaves. With leaf maturity, the density of non-glandular trichomes decreased. Glandular trichomes were rare and of two types: long-stalked capitate and globose-like peltate trichomes. Capitate trichomes were observed only on the abaxial leaf surface, while peltate trichomes were distributed on both adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces.  相似文献

Trichomes and their distribution patterns have been observed in the aerial parts of plants of the genera Striga, Buchnera, Rhamphicarpa, Euphrasia, Melampyrum and Rhinanthus, using both light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All trichomes belong to the multicellular, uniseriate category and can be classified as glandular and nonglandular types. On nearly all organs, the two types can be observed side by side. Apart from a large group of ubiquitous trichomes, some characteristic trichome types are reported; they are restricted either to chlorophyllous organs (foliage leaves, bracts, calyx and stem) or to the corolla. In some nonglandular trichomes mineral deposits have been found. Other morphological and anatomical trichome features are discussed with regard to their possible function.  相似文献

Glandular trichomes in the leaf lamina of Rosmarinus officinalis L. were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The leaves were characterized by an abundance of two types of glandular trichomes—small capitate and large peltate glandular trichomes. In addition to the glandular trichomes, numerous non-glandular trichomes were present on the abaxial surface of the leaf. These trichomes mainly predominated on the midrib, whereas glandular trichomes occurred on non-vein areas. At the initial phase of secretory cavity formation, hyaline areas were abundant in periclinal walls of head cells, while they were not observed in the anticlinal walls. The hyaline areas gradually increased in size, fusing with other areas throughout the wall. Loose wall material adjacent to hyaline areas was released from the head cell walls and migrated into the secretory cavities. As the secretory cavities continued to enlarge, the new vesicles emerging into the secretory cavities from the walls of head cells became surrounded with the surface of a typical membrane. They developed a round shape, but the contours of the vesicle surfaces appeared polygonal when tightly packed inside a cavity. These vesicles varied in size; small vesicles often possessed electron-dense contents, while large vesicles contained electron-light contents.  相似文献

The histological components of the leaf were studied in dried herbarium material of the three Origanum vulgare subspecies (subsp. hirtum , subsp. viridulum and subsp. vulgare ) grown wild in Greece. These three, geographically distinct, taxa showed remarkable differences in their leaves. The leaves of subsp. hirtum grown in the Mediterranean climatic zone of Greece are characterized by thick cutinized outer walls of the epidermal cells and a thick mesophyll with highly developed chlorophyllous tissues. Peltate glandular trichomes and stomata are numerous on bom leaf surfaces. The thickness of the mesophyll decreases in the other two subspecies grown in the northern part of the country, where a Continental type of climate occurs. The number of glandular trichomes and stomata also decreases. Besides these differences, a noticeable reduction in the size of the essential oil-accumulating subcuticular chamber of the glandular trichomes and in the number of the peribasal cells, has also been recorded in die plants of subsp. vulgare and viridulum.  相似文献

Salt stress is harmful to plants, especially for those that live under conditions of intense salt aport. For this reason, several species present alternatives to prevent or diminish the damages that high salt concentrations may cause to the cells. Salt glands are one of these alternatives once they are specialized structures that secrete salt. Here, we aimed to investigate if the glandular trichomes in the leaves of Jacquinia armillaris are salt glands. Anatomical and ultrastructural observations showed that the glandular trichomes in J. armillaris resemble the salt glands from other recretohalophytes Primulaceae, such as, their occurrence in sunken regions in the leaf epidermis, the presence of a large basal cell that acts as a collecting cell, the detachment of the cuticle from the outer periclinal walls forming a cuticular chamber, the thickness of the cuticle in the stalk portion of the trichome, and the presence of sodium and chloride ions in the secretion and in the xylem. Altogether, the gathered results support the hypothesis that the glandular trichomes in J. armillaris are adapted to salt secretion, thus characterizing as salt glands.  相似文献

Carlquist , Sherwin . (Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, Claremont, California.) Glandular structures of Holocarpha and their ontogeny. Amer. Jour. Bot. 46(4): 300–308. Illus. 1959.—Two types of advanced glandular structures occur in the 4 species of the genus Holocarpha. Sessile disk-shaped glands occur at the tips of upper leaves and of involucral and receptacular bracts. Unlike all other glandular structures of Madinae which have been investigated, these originate from several protodermal initials rather than a single one. These glands, however, represent modifications of a glandular trichome. The other type of glandular structure, termed hollow-stalked trichome here, occurs on the outer surface of involucral and receptacular bracts. These trichomes originate from a single cell but differ from others in the formation of a hollow stalk, the wall of which is one cell in thickness. Mesophyll of the bract, often with an included vascular bundle, is present as an intrusion into the base of the hollow stalk. Corresponding to the advanced nature of the glandular structures, the leaves show specializations in the “inrolling” of margins. Upper leaves have a cylindrical organization of vascular tissue, whereas basal leaves are “normal” and leaves of the main stem are intermediate. The species of Holocarpha differ in certain details of leaf anatomy and structure of hollow-stalked trichomes. The systematic distribution of these is given. The essential unity of the various glandular structures of Madinae is discussed both in terms of mature structure and ontogeny, and the steps in the evolution of these are suggested.  相似文献

Ficus carica L., a typical plant of the Mediterranean environment, presents leaves covered by an extensive indumentum, and a mesophyll full of solid inclusions. The morphology and ultrastructure of the trichomes, calcium carbonate cystoliths and silicified structures of leaves of F. carica cv Dottato were investigated with light, confocal, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. At the same time, histochemical reactions were also employed to analyse the indumentum composed by glandular and non-glandular trichomes by applying chemical reagents and fluorescence microscopy. Non-glandular and glandular trichomes, capitate, are described. Non-glandular trichomes are unicellular simple, spine-like and present different morphology and sizes. The capitate glandular trichomes are present on leaf adaxial and abaxial surface and consist of one-celled stalk and 3/4 cells spherical head. Histochemical characterisation of leaf hairs revealed the presence of flavonoids, while glandular trichome head cells showed a complex mixture of alkaloids, essential oil and flavonoids. Cu and Al were found in the constitutive structures, spike and dome, of the cystoliths. Several epidermal cells and non-glandular trichomes were silicified. Leaf hairs, trichomes secretions, solid inclusions and silicification of F. carica leaf have significant roles to play in relation to leaf protection from external factors, including high-intensity radiation, herbivores or pathogens.  相似文献
