1986. Structure and composition of the metacercarial cyst wall of Sphaeridiotrema globulus (Trematoda). International Journal for Parasitology 16: 647–653. Histochemical and structural observations were made on the metacercarial cyst wall of Sphaeridiotrema globulus, obtained from naturally infected Goniobasis virginica (Pleuroceridae) snails. The cyst wall of S. globulus is a thin, glistening, transparent structure that thickens as the metacercaria ages. The cysts occur singly beneath the shell of the snail host or linked together in sheets, pyramids and other three dimensional forms. Light and electron microscopic examination of the cyst wall reveals an inner, middle and outer layer, each of which may vary in thickness. Adjacent cysts are linked by their outer layers. The chemical composition of these layers, elucidated through histochemistry, is described.  相似文献

Sphaeridiotrema globulus in experimentally infected mute swans (Cygnus olor), mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and Canada geese (Branta canadensis) induced ulcerative hemorrhagic enteritis. Sites of infection include the jejunum and ileum. The digeneans ulcerated the intestine. The inflammatory response was primarily lymphocytic with some eosinophils. Severe hemorrhage from damaged submucosal capillaries provided a blood meal for the parasite and caused anemia in the host. Extra-medullary hematopoiesis occurred in the liver, and an erythroid hyperplasia occurred in the bone marrow of infected birds. Infected birds exhibited muscular weakness and died from shock associated with severe blood loss. Mallards and Canada geese were less susceptible to fatal infection than the mute swan as evidenced by survivors in the higher dose groups.  相似文献

Flukes belonging to Sphaeridiotrema are important parasites of waterfowl, and 2 morphologically similar species Sphaeridiotrema globulus and Sphaeridiotrema pseudoglobulus, have been implicated in waterfowl mortality in North America. Cytochrome oxidase I (barcode region) and partial LSU-rDNA sequences from specimens of S. globulus and S. pseudoglobulus, obtained from naturally and experimentally infected hosts from New Jersey and Quebec, respectively, confirmed that these species were distinct. Barcode sequences of the 2 species differed at 92 of 590 nucleotide positions (15.6%) and the translated sequences differed by 13 amino acid residues. Partial LSU-rDNA sequences differed at 29 of 1,208 nucleotide positions (2.4%). Additional barcode sequences from specimens collected from waterfowl in Wisconsin and Minnesota and morphometric data obtained from specimens acquired along the north shore of Lake Superior revealed the presence of S. pseudoglobulus in these areas. Although morphometric data suggested the presence of S. globulus in the Lake Superior sample, it was not found among the specimens sequenced from Wisconsin or Minnesota.  相似文献

Thirty laboratory-reared mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) were experimentally infected with Sphaeridiotrema globulus. Host cell-mediated immunity and wound healing in S. globulus infected ducks were evaluated by gross and histological examination. Establishment, location, and life span of S. globulus differed from previous reports of sphaeridiotremiasis in both naturally and experimentally infected waterfowl. No worms were recovered from the ceca, and worm migration occurred anterior to the ileo-cecal valve with greater dispersion (less worm crowding) at higher rates of infectivity. Parasite death and host lesion resolution were evident at days 8 to 10 postinfection (PI) in ducks fed a moderate dose (200 metacercariae, group A) with a 5% mean parasite recovery rate. Host death occurred at days 3 to 6 in ducks fed a high dose (550 metacercariae, group B) with a 16% mean parasite recovery rate. Mast cells increased significantly (P less than 0.005) in group A ducks from days 4 to 10 PI. Eosinophil proliferation was greater in group B than in group A on day 4 PI, but comparatively fewer eosinophils were identifiable in group B ducks on day 6 PI.  相似文献

Over the past 20 yr, recurrent late-summer mortality of dabbling ducks in southern Québec has been attributed to the digenean parasite Cyathocotyle bushiensis. This study attempted to determine whether this parasite was still implicated in the epizootics, and examined aspects of the ecology of the parasite in the definitive host. Comparison of prevalence and mean intensity of infection of all species of Digenea between salvaged carcasses and hunter-shot ducks revealed that C. bushiensis and a second digenean Sphaeridiotrema globulus were both significantly more prevalent in salvaged ducks. Mean intensity of infection was consistently higher for S. globulus in the salvaged carcasses than in hunter-shot ducks. These data provide strong circumstantial support for the hypothesis that C. bushiensis continues to contribute to the annual mortality, but also strongly suggest that S. globulus may be involved. Comparison of the relative numbers of each species of duck between the salvaged carcass sample and the hunter-shot sample revealed that blue-winged teal (Anas discors) occurred significantly more frequently in the salvaged carcass sample whereas wood ducks (Aix sponsa) were common in the hunter-shot sample but were never found in the salvaged carcass sample. A comparison of susceptibility to experimental infection with C. bushiensis revealed that mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), black ducks (Anas rubripes), blue-winged teal, pintail (Anas acuta) and lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) had similar susceptibilities but that wood ducks were significantly less susceptible to infection. Experimental infections also showed that age of mallards significantly influenced the number of parasites obtained 7 days postinfection; ducklings were most heavily infected. Significant differences were detected in the gross pathology caused by C. bushiensis among duck species. Data obtained from sentinel ducks placed in the field for 24 hr revealed that transmission of both C. bushiensis and S. globulus occurs at least between mid-May and mid-September and that large, potentially lethal, infections can be acquired in as little as 24 hr. Finally evidence is presented to suggest that ducks acquire resistance to challenge infections of C. bushiensis.  相似文献

Miracidia of the eyefluke Philophthalmus megalurus were tested in phi-chambers to determine if they reacted similarly to chemicals found stimulative for miracidia of Philophthalmus gralli, a closely related species. Philophthalmus megalurus miracidia were less responsive than P. gralli to the dicarboxylic amino acids and showed a significantly positive response only to 10 mM glutamic acid. These P. megalurus miracidia were chemonegative to 10 mM HCl and H2SO4, chemicals to which P. gralli miracidia gave a significantly positive response. Ammonia and Mg2+ did not elicit any response from P. megalurus miracidia.  相似文献

A systematic analysis of the genera in the Diplostomidae and Strigeidae was made using the Proterodiplostomidae as the outgroup. The Proterodiplostomidae was the family with the greatest preponderance of primitive characters and its monophyly was supported by the unique paraprostate gland. However, no character state supported the monophyly of the Diplostomidae sensu Dubois, 1970. That paraphyletic taxon was composed of 3 monophyletic groups: the pseudosuckerless Neodiplostomidae n. fam. had the most primitive character states of the 3 and its monophyly was based on characters in the neascus/neodiplostomulum metacercariae; the Bolbophoridae n. fam., with pseudosuckers, had its monophyly supported by characters present in the newly named prodiplostomulum metacercaria; and the emended Diplostomidae, also with pseudosuckers, had the most derived states and its monophyly was supported by characters present in the diplostomulum. The presence of pseudosuckers united the Bolbophoridae n. fam., the emended Diplostomidae, and the Strigeidae as a monophyletic assemblage. The Strigeidae had the most derived characters of these 3 taxa and its monophyly was supported by characters in the tetracotyle and the cup-shaped forebody and bilobed tribocytic organ of the adult. In general, the adult stages of these strigeoid families showed very conserved morphology and it was the metacercariae that possessed the innovations. The conserved adult morphology was typical of what one might expect if the intramolluscan stages were analyzed. Thus, the data were concordant with the view that the mollusc and vertebrate definitive host were the original hosts to the Digenea and that the second intermediate host and metacercaria were more recently intercalated. More specifically, the phylogeny of these groups suggested that ancestral bisegmented strigeoids originally infected reptiles, they subsequently radiated into birds with which they coevolved extensively, and on 5 separate occasions they radiated into mammals. The radiations into mammals were, by all available evidence, preceded by second intermediate host shifts from fish to amphibians.  相似文献

The family Prosthogonimidae (Trematoda) in Australia. International Journal for Parasitology 3: 853–862. The family Prosthogonimidae has previously been known in Australia by three species of Prosthogonimus Lühe, 1899 (from birds) and by Coelomotrema Angel, 1970 (from marsupials). Two new genera are now proposed: Cylindrotrema cygni from Cygnus atratus (Latham) (caecum), and Mawsonotrema eudyptulae from Eudyptula minor (Forster) (liver). Prosthogonimus vitellatus Nicoll, 1914 is recorded from three new hosts, Gymnorhina tibicen leuconota (Latham), Phalacrocorax melanoleucos (Vieillot) and Chlidonias hybrida (Pallas), and the species is redescribed from 11 specimens from the first of these. The life history, not known for any Australian species, is discussed.

The only plump-bodied genera in the family are Coelomotrema, Cylindrotrema and Mawsonotrema, all of which are confined to Australia.

Mawsonotrema differs from all other members of the family in the position of the genital pore, which is away from the anterior end of the body, lying against the anterior border of the acetabulum.  相似文献

Regions of the genome affecting physical and chemical wood properties (quantitative trait loci (QTL)), as well as growth, were identified using a clonally replicated, outbred F2 family (112 genotypes, each with two ramets) of Eucalyptus globulus, planted in a field trial in north-west Tasmania. Traits studied were growth (assessed by stem diameter), wood density, cellulose content, pulp yield and lignin content. These traits are important in breeding for pulpwood, and will be important in breeding for carbon sequestration and biofuel production. Between one and four QTL were located for each trait, with each QTL explaining between 4% and 12% of the phenotypic variation. Several QTL for chemical wood properties were co-located, consistent with their high phenotypic correlations, and may reflect pleiotropic effects of the same genes. In contrast, QTL for density and lignin content with overlapping confidence intervals were considered to be due to independent genes, since the QTL effects were inherited from different parents. The inclusion of fully informative microsatellites on the linkage map allowed the determination of homology at the linkage group level between QTL and candidate genes in different pedigrees of E. globulus and different eucalypt species. None of the candidate genes mapped in comparable studies co-located with our major QTL for wood chemical properties, arguing that there are important candidate genes yet to be discovered.  相似文献
