A promising new method of marking larval freshwater fishes with enriched stable isotopes by means of injecting the maternal parent with the marking agent was investigated. The 138Ba:137Ba ratios in the otoliths of larval golden perch Macquaria ambigua were compared to determine the effect of injecting female broodstock with different dosages of enriched 137Ba at various times before spawning. There was 100% mark success in the progeny of fish injected with 20 μg g−1 of enriched 137Ba 24 h before inducing spawning with hormones and 40 μg g−1 administered at the same time as inducement of spawning. Injection of 40 μg g−1 enriched 137Ba 21 days before spawning resulted in only 81% mark success and suggests rapid elimination of barium in M. ambigua . Injection with enriched 137Ba did not significantly affect the fertilization rate, number of fertilized eggs or hatching rate compared with long-term hatchery records. These results suggest that transgenerational marking is an effective and affordable means of mass-marking larval fishes. Thousands of larval fishes can be permanently marked with a unique artificial isotopic mark via a single injection into the maternal parent, thus avoiding the handling of individual fishes or having to deal with chemical baths. Because no single mark or tagging method is suitable for all situations, transgenerational marking with enriched stable isotopes provides another method for researchers and managers to discriminate both hatchery-reared and wild fishes.  相似文献

Growth of captive juvenile Pacific halibut was linearly related to energy consumption (J g−1 day−1) at 4°C by the following equation: growth (% body weight (b.w.) day−1)=0–007 (consumption J g−1 day−1)– 0.192; r2 =0.81. Weight gain was independent of size for fish between 9 and 7000 g when growth was expressed as a function of consumption in J g−1 day−1. Maintenance ration determined in feeding–growth experiments averaged 27.4 J g−1 day−1 at 4–0°C. Small halibut ate significantly more food than large fish. Single meals following 2 day fasts averaged 4.1% b.w. for halibut under 100 g, 1.72% b.w. for 1.2 kg fish and 1.1% B.W. for 6.8 kg fish. Both large and small size categories of halibut tended to evacuate their meal in about 3 days even though small fish ate relatively larger meals. Minimum estimates for daily ration to achieve growth rates observed in the Gulf of Alaska were approximately 0.5 to 2.4% b.w. day−1 depending on fish size and whether northern shrimp or yellowfin sole were their prey.  相似文献

The effects of water hardness (9 and 220 mgl−1 as CaCO3) upon zinc exchange in brown trout exposed to 0.77 μmol Zn 1−1 have been investigated using artificial soft water (<49.9 μmol Ca l-1, <40.1 μmol Mg 1−1) and mains hard water (1671.7 μmol Ca 1−1, 493.6 μmol Mg 1−1) of known composition. Both hard and soft water-adapted fish exhibited a bimodal pattern of net zinc influx. Net zinc influxes during both fast and slow uptake phases were significantly greater ( P <0.001) in soft (82.9 and 6.2 μmol Zn 100 g−1 h−1) than in hard water (46.3 and 2.4 μmol Zn 100 g h−1). Zinc efflux (- 0.2 μmol Zn 100 g−1 h−1) was enhanced only in hard water during the slow net influx phase.
Brown trout exposed to zinc in hard water and placed in metal-free media exhibited a greater net efflux (- 25.6 μmol Zn 100 g−1 h−1) of the metal than did fish in soft water (-4.2 μmol Zn 100 g−1 h−1) treated in the same manner. Tissue 65Zn activities reflected both the differences in uptake and excretion rates of the metal between hard and soft water fish. During zinc exposure (0.77 μmol Zn 1−1) high water hardness reduced tissue burdens of the metal by reducing net branchial influx, and enhancing efflux of the metal in hard water fish.  相似文献

The optomotor reaction of juvenile Coregonus schinzipalea Val. et Cuv. and Salmo salar L. was utilized to develop a circular tube metabolism chamber to measure oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion as a function of swimming speed. The metabolism chamber with a constant water flow assured the maintenance of stable conditions. The unidirectional movement of fish was measured in a circular tube with a single narrowing. The relationships between the swimming speed and oxygen consumption or ammonia excretion described by exponential equations allowed the extrapolation towards the standard metabolism, i.e., zero swimming speed. For a juvenile coregonid (0.1–0.15 g individual weight, 2.6–2.8 cm total length) standard metabolism at 14° C was estimated as 0.65 mg02 g−1 h−1 and 17.3 μg N(NH3)g−1 h−1, whereas for juvenile salmon (136mg individual weight) respective values at 22° C were 0.047mg02g−1h−1 and 0.61 μg N(NH3)g−1 h−1. The feeding test with juvenile salmon was also performed in this circular chamber, and in both energy and nitrogen budgets after a meal the partitioning could be precisely attributed to standard metabolism, active metabolism and specific dynamic action (in the case of oxygen consumption) or postprandial nitrogen increase.
The new metabolism chamber allowed the relationship between metabolism and swimming velocity of juvenile fish with developed rheotactic response. It could be used with adult fish for similar purposes.  相似文献

The protective effects of dietary Ca2+ supplementation against Cd accumulation in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss fed with Cd-contaminated food were evaluated in relation to chronic changes in intestinal absorption rates. The changes were measured ' in vitro '. The control diet contained c. 20 mg Ca2+ g−1 food and 0·25 μg Cd g−1 food; the experimental diets were supplemented with CaCO3 and Cd(NO3)2·4H2O to levels of 50 mg Ca2+ g−1 food and 300 μg Cd g−1 food, alone and in combination. The Ca2+ and Cd absorption rates were measured using radiotracers (45Ca, 109Cd) at total Ca2+ and Cd concentrations of 3·0 and 0·12 mmol l−1, respectively in the intestinal saline. Chronically elevated dietary Cd caused a significant increase in Cd absorption rate by up to 10-fold at 30 days in the mid-intestine. The high Ca2+ diet prevented this up-regulation of Cd transport rate. Conversely, intestinal Ca2+ absorption was significantly increased by two- to five-fold by the Ca2+-supplemented diet at 30 days in both the mid- and posterior intestine, and this effect was eliminated when Cd was simultaneously elevated in the diet. Ca2+ and Cd probably interact at common pathways and transport mechanisms in the intestine, though independent pathways may also exist.  相似文献

Ascorbic acid (AA) and α-tocopherol (α-TOH) levels in whole Atlantic halibut larvae were constant during the yolk sac stage at 170 and 131 ng individual−1, respectively. At hatching c . 80% of the AA and 97% of the α-TOH were contained within the yolk-sac compartment. With development, AA and α-TOH levels in the yolk decreased, at different rates. At first feeding (at 200 day degrees post hatch, D°PH)>95% of AA but <30% of α-TOH in the yolk at hatching had been transferred to the larval body. Transfer of α-TOH was completed at 360 D°PH, when the yolk was completely absorbed. The plankton offered to the larvae at first feeding (chiefly Temora longicornis ) contained 756 μg g−1 AA and 120 μg g−1α-TOH (dry weight). The AA content increased to 472 ng individual−1 within one week after first feeding, while it declined slightly in unfed larvae. In fed larvae the AA content reached c . 3500 ng individual−1 at 580 D)PH. The α-TOH content increased only slightly in the first week of feeding (206 to 431 D°PH), but then increased to > 800 ng individual−1 at 483 D°PH.  相似文献

The respiration of coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch , weighing between 15 and 50 g was measured at gradually declining oxygen levels and at temperatures ranging between 14 and 17°C. The maximum and minimum oxygen concentrations tested were 250 and 40 μmol L−1, respectively. Respiration rates were measured for 1 h periods before oxygen concentration was lowered by 12.5 or 25.0 μmol oxygen L−1. At the end of these endurance tests the oxygen level was returned to normoxic conditions and respiration rates were determined for the recovery period. Under normoxic conditions (> 200 μmol L−1) the respiration of coho levelled around 5.1 μmol g−1 wet weight h−1. At intermediate levels between 150 and 200 μmol oxygen L−1, the average rate increased to 5.8 μmol g−1 h−1, which could be attributed to higher spontaneous activity of the test animals. At low oxygen levels (< 150 μmol−1) average respiration rates dropped to values between 5.5 and 5.7 μmol g−1 h−1, reaching a minimum of 3.8 μmol g−1 h−1 at oxygen levels below 50 μmol Lμ. First mortality was observed in this range. After exposure to reduced oxygen levels the fish maintained a higher respiration rate when again exposed to normoxic oxygen levels above 200 μmol L−1. Increased respiration rates were observed for a recovery period of 6 h.  相似文献

The energy density ( E D) of anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus in the Bay of Biscay was determined by direct calorimetry and its evolution with size, age and season was investigated. The water content and energy density varied seasonally following opposite trends. The E D g−1 of wet mass ( M W) was highest at the end of the feeding season (autumn: c . 8 kJ g−1 M W) and lowest in late winter ( c . 6 kJ g−1 M W). In winter, the fish lost mass, which was partially replaced by water, and the energy density decreased. These variations in water content and organic matter content may have implications on the buoyancy of the fish. The water content was the major driver of the energy density variations for a M W basis. A significant linear relationship was established between E D g−1 ( y ) and the per cent dry mass ( M D; x ): y =−4·937 + 0·411 x . In the light of the current literature, this relationship seemed to be not only species specific but also ecosystem specific. Calibration and validation of fish bioenergetics models require energy content measurements on fish samples collected at sea. The present study provides a first reference for the energetics of E. encrasicolus in the Bay of Biscay.  相似文献

Mercury concentrations in the axial muscle tissue of most (243) of the 254 Anguilla australis and most (20) of the 27 A. reinhardtii collected from 30 sites in coastal rivers and lakes in Victoria, Australia, during 1975–78 were well below the Australian statutory health limit (0.5 μg g−1 wet weight). For A. australis the mean mercury concentration was 0.17 μg g−1 (±0.16 s.d. , range 0.01–1.60 μg g−1); for A. reinhardtii the values were 0.37 ± 0.23 μg g−1 (range 0.12–1.10 μg g−1). Statistical analyses showed that variation in mercury concentration due to total length accounted for only 13% of the total variation in A. australis and 2% in A. reinhardtii whereas locality accounted for 54 and 68%, respectively. Both species are thus considered suitable as indicators of mercury pollution.  相似文献

The heart of Leiopotherapon unicolor comprises 0.135±0.005% of total body weight compared to the average teleost heart size of 0.081±0.002% body weight. The respiratory surface area of 569 mm2 g−1 is also much larger than that found in most freshwater fish. The exponent b in the equation Gill Area = a. body wtb was evaluated at 1.04, whereas the theoretical value for b is only 0.75. It is therefore evident that L. unicolor has an excessively large gill area and a large heart, which facilitate oxygen uptake in hypoxic environments.  相似文献

Cadmium and zinc content of fish from an industrially contaminated lake   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Eleven species of fish from an industrially-contaminated lake were analysed for whole body cadmium and zinc content by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Cadmium and zinc content of fish were species related, and most species accumulated these trace metals to levels significantly higher than background. Maximum concentrations detected were 13.60 μg Cd g−1 (dry wt) in a bluegill and 820 μg Zn g−1 in a redear sunfish. Cadmium content was much more variable than zinc content. Distributions of concentrations of both cadmium and zinc in fish were lognormal, and concentrations of both metals tended to decrease in higher trophic levels. Zinc concentrations significantly decreased as total length increased in three species.  相似文献

Abstract The kinetics of glucose uptake by soil microbial communities in 16 different soild (7 under monocultures and 9 under crop rotations) differing in microbial biomass content, % Corg, pH and clay content were investigated at 22°C. The V max value of microbial bimasses under monoculture, was o.27 μg Cgluc · μg−1 Cmic · h−1 (range 0.18–0.44), twice as high as the mean value of V max of microbial biomasses under rotations (0.13 μg Cgluc, range 0.07–0.19). Mean values of K m were 714 μg Cgluc and 290 μg Cgluc · g−1 soil, respectively.
These differences were highly significant ( P =0.001, based on SE) and could not be relate to particle size distribution of the soils, pH or Corg. A Michaelis-Menten type uptake response was apparent over the total range of glucose concentrations used (45.4–1453.3 μg Cgluc · g−1 soil) for microbial biomasses under rotation while the majority of microbial biomasses under monocultures showed a similar response only at low glucose concentrations. A different uptake mechanism appeared to be involved at higher glucose concentrations (similar to diffusion) in monoculture soils.  相似文献

Synthetic chlorochromate derivatives of pyridine and quinoline were active in vitro against type cultures of Escherichia coli (ATCC 128), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 14775), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 10145) and Bacillus subtilis (NCTC 8236). The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were 125–250 μg ml−1 and 250–500 μg ml−1 for pyridinium chlorochromate and quinolinium chlorochromate, respectively. An established derivative of quinoline (Perfloxacin) had an MIC of 125–250 μg ml−1. The extinction time for 105 cfu in broth was 90 min for pyridinium chlorochromate and 120 min for quinolinium chlorochromate, except for B. subtilis which survived up to about 180 min and 360 min. A combination of the two compounds produced an antagonistic effect. The 50% lethal dose (LD50 toxicity) in mice was estimated at 76 μg g−1 and 33 μg g−1 body weight for the quinolinium and pyridinium chlorochromates. The compounds also exhibited some potential for suppressing a simulated staphylococcal infection in mice at the dosage levels of ca 22 μg g−1 for pyridinium chlorochromate and 45 μg g−1 for quinolinium chlorochromate.  相似文献

The levels of polyamines (PA) and abscisic acid (ABA) in the pericarp of California variety pepper fruit ( Capsicum annuum L.) were analyzed during development and ripening. Putrescine level was 2.75 μmol g−1 fresh weight 7 days after fruit set and fell during the exponential stage of growth to 1.05 μmol g−1 fresh weight. During the second growth stage. PA and ABA levels remained stable and fell sharply at the beginning of maturation. The levels of spermidine and spermine decreased throughout fruit development and maturation from 0.61 to 0.05 and 0.31 to 0.02 μmol g−1 fresh weight, respectively, but no changes were associated with the onset of maturation. ABA levels remained high (0.70-0.80 μg g−1 fresh weight) during the stages of fruit growth and fell at the beginning of maturation to 0.12 μg g−1 fresh weight, before rising again during the last stages of maturation and senescence. The decrease in putrescine and ABA levels and the subsequent increase in the latter may be responsible for controlling the processes of ripening in pepper fruit.  相似文献

The amylase-producing ability of the intestinal microflora in cultured specimens of ayu, carp, channel catfish, Japanese eel and tilapia was determined. Mean viable counts of aerobes and anaerobes ranged from 1·1×106 to 3·7×108 cfu g−1 and from 1·3×103 to 1·6×108 cfu g−1, respectively. Aeromonas spp. and Bacteroidaceae were predominant in four to five fish species. Of 206 strains examined, 65 (31·6%) produced ≥0·01 U amylase ml−1. The percentage of producers differed among families and genera of bacteria and fish species. While 56% of the anaerobes produced amylase, only 20% of the aerobes did. More than 50% of Aeromonas , Bacteroidaceae and Clostridium strains produced amylase efficiently while Acinetobacter , coryneforms, Enterobacteriaceae, Moraxella , Plesiomonas and Streptococcus strains did not. High amylase production (≥0·05 U ml−1) was found in 12 strains, 11 from Aeromonas and one Pseudomonas . The percentage of high amylase producers in Japanese eel was lower than the other four fish (2–30%). These results strongly suggest that the amylase produced by the intestinal microflora play an important role in the digestion of starch in freshwater fish to some extent.  相似文献

Silver carp and bighead carp exhibited size-selection for food particles in aquarium experiments, but did not select their preferred species of plankton actively when they were distributed evenly in the water. They also possessed the capacity of selection for feeding area. The removal rates (% g−1 fish weight) of silver carp for smaller plankton (phytoplankton) were higher than those of bighead carp. The removal rates by the latter for bigger plankton (zooplankton) were higher than those of silver carp, but for plankton about 70 μm dia. the rates by the two species were almost equal.  相似文献

Pancreatic bile salt-dependent lipase (BSDL) was present with 0·5 μg BSDL larva−1 from hatching in turbot larvae. The enzyme content increased during the yolk sac phase to 1·1 μg BSDL larva−1. This suggests that larval turbot are able to digest lipids from the start of exogenous feeding. The BSDL synthesis was stimulated first by food about 5 days after the onset of first feeding. The content per larva increased exponentially in fed larvae to 20 μg BSDL larva−1 on day 23 after hatching and decreased in starved larvae. In contrast, the specific content decreased during the first feeding phase, meaning that smaller larvae had a higher content of enzyme related to their biomass than did bigger larvae.  相似文献

Daily food consumption and alimentary canal evacuation rates for common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., were estimated at 4-week intervals from April to October 1979. Both the rate of food evacuation and its relationship to temperature were described by an exponential function. Gut evacuation rates ranged from 6.0% of gut contents per hour at 9°C to 32.7% h−1 at 26.5°C. Temperature accounted for 72–91% of the variation in gut evacuation rate among months. Daily food consumption varied from a low of 3.87 mg g−1 of fish wet wt per day in April at 14°C (0.39% of wet body wt) to a high of 40.75 mg g−1 (4.08%) in August at 26.5°C. Although a greater quantity of food appeared to be consumed during the morning in spring and early summer and a greater amount in the evening after July, there was not a statistically significant time of day for peak feeding activity. The field method described here seemed to provide reasonable estimates of food consumption compared with other field and laboratory studies.  相似文献

The nutritive state of dab Limanda limanda was investigated over a 2-year period at a fixed sampling site northwest of Helgoland (German Bight, North Sea), with respect to feeding habits and the accumulation of biochemical storage products. Ophiuroids formed the main weight of food organisms (50%) while polychaetes (10%), molluscs and crustaceans (<5% each) were less frequent. Feeding activity in males varied between summer and winter, while females fed more constantly. The condition factor and the hepatosomatic index showed characteristic seasonal cycles in both sexes. The glycogen content in the liver reached 40–60 mg g−1 FW in summer and fell to about 10–20 mg g−1 FW in late winter. Total lipids of the liver showed a distinct seasonal cycle with 400 mg g−1 FW in summer and a minimum of 50–100 mg g−1 FW in spring. The lipid content of the muscle ranged from 5 to 6 mg g−1 FW and did not vary significantly between seasons.  相似文献

Six isonitrogenous (gross protein content 35%) and isoenergetic (gross energy content 17 kJ g−1) diets were formulated to investigate the effects of inclusion of plant proteins on the gibel carp ( Carassius auratus gibelio L.). The plant proteins tested were: soybean cake (SBC), potato protein concentrate (PPC), peanut cake (PNC), cottonseed cake (CSC) and rapeseed cake (RSC). Fish meal (FM) was used as control. In each diet, 27% of the protein was supplied by fish meal, and the rest supplied by the plant protein tested. Each diet was fed to three groups of gibel carp for 8 weeks in a recirculation system. Specific growth rate (SGR) in fish fed the control diet was significantly higher than those in the other groups, and SGR in fish fed the PPC was significantly lower than in fish fed other plant proteins. There was no significant difference in SGR among the other groups. Feeding rates were ranked in the order: RSC > CSC > FM > PNC > SBC > PPC. Conversion efficiency was highest in groups fed FM, SBC and PNC, followed by groups fed CSC and RSC, and was lowest in the group fed PPC. The fish fed PPC showed lower protein retention than those fed FM and SBC. FM showed highest energy retention while PPC showed lowest. There was no significant relationship between SGR and intake of digestible protein (g g−1 day−1), digestible lysine (g g−1 day−1), digestible methionine (g g−1 day−1) or digestible total essential amino acids (g g−1 day−1), suggesting that the differences in SGR could not alone account for any of these variables.  相似文献
