In the genusCoptis, some interesting features are found which are considered important phylogenetically. The median bundles of petiole and petiolule, and the midrib of lamina are double. They seem to represent a transitional situation between a dichotomy and a single median bundle found in usual angiospermous venation. The double bundle is either derived from 2 independent leaf trace bundles or formed by dichotomy of a leaf trace bundle, and it does not seem so important whether the number of trace bundles is even or odd. The nodal structure is trilacunar or pentalacunar with 3, 4, 6 or 8 trace bundles. The upper part of the carpel does not produce ovules and is open from the initiation of the carpel. It is suggested that the carpel becomes open secondarily concomitant with the reduction of ovules. This shows that the closure of the carpel is not perfectly established.  相似文献

We studied the influence of temperature on the spawning performance of artificially matured Japanese eels, Anguilla japonica, in captivity. We used routine hormone injections to bring females and males to maturity in separate aquaria. We recorded the behavior of three pairs of such hormone-treated matured eels in an aquarium (2 replicates) at four temperatures: 14, 18, 22, and 27°C, respectively. They became active and frequently left the bottom swimming in the water column, and spawning events occurred. Females released eggs in the water column around the activity peaks. Males preceded females in reaching activity peaks (presumably the timing of sperm ejection and egg release), possibly resulting in the low fertilization we observed in this experiment. Males and females returned back to the aquarium bottoms and became quiet after spawning. On several occasions, male-female or female-female pairs were observed to ‘cruise together’ in the water column for several to tens of seconds prior to egg releasing, but no courtship behavior indicative of spawning such as pairing and chasing was observed in the eels in our study. Our results suggest that 18–22°C might be the thermal preference for spawning for Japanese eels, which approximates the temperature range of the 500 m deep water layer around the Mariana Islands seamount area, the presumed spawning site for the Japanese eel.

Prominent bands or lines were present on colonies of Millepora complanata on coral reefs at Barbados, West Indies. These bands appeared as regular, dark and light horizontal zones or stripes on vertically growing plates and blades making up the colonies. Bands are formed by wave-like undulations or currugations of the skeletal surface. The number of bands correlates with colony height and mean band width equals the mean annual vertical growth of measured colonies. Variation in annual growth and differences in growth rates of colonies between different reefs were determined from band width measurements. Bands provide a rapid and non-destructive means for measuring growth and ageing colonies of M. complanata.  相似文献

The life cycle of the aglaopheniid Macrorynchia philippina Kirchenpauer, 1872, is re-described from examination of live specimens collected from Réunion Island, Indian Ocean. Fertile colonies were collected on the outer slope of the coral reef and medusoid release happened a few hours later. Video sequences were recorded. Colonies were hermaphroditic: each phylactocarp contained one female and one male gonotheca. Sexual dimorphism was remarkable: sex could be recognized by colour, the female being red ochre, including about 40 oocytes disposed in a mosaic feature, and the male yellow ochre, having a homogeneous mass of spermatozoa. The blastostyle ran all around the gonangium near the closure of the two valves of the gonotheca, forming gubernacula. A ring of refringent corpuscles was clearly visible near the apex. Medusoids were indistinguishable inside the gonotheca. Male and female medusoids were released simultaneously at gamete maturity. Medusoid release involved the basal rupture of the blastostyle and the rupture of the links between the ectoderm surrounded the medusoid (the mantle), including the blastostyle (the mantle), and the gonothecal perisarc. While the two valves of the gonotheca were pushed and drew aside, the medusoid emerged by slipping out of the mantle that ruptured distally, forming a sheath; the bell of the medusoid did not contract. Immediately after emergence, quick and strong contractions of the bell allowed the medusoid to swim and induced spawning by breaking the ectoderm surrounding the gametic mass around the spadix. Spawning lasted only a few minutes: both oocytes and spermatozoa were expelled at each contraction. Spent medusoids remained alive only about 2 h. External fertilization gave rise to planulae 1 day later.  相似文献

Planula larvae of Halocordyle disticha were examined for the presence of catecholamines using a multipronged approach. Transmission electron micrographs of planular sensory cells and ganglionic cells demonstrated dense-cored vesicles and electron-dense droplets in both cell types. These vesicles and droplets were similar in morphology to catecholamine-containing granules of vertebrates. Planulae processed with the SPG histofluorescence technique, specific only for catecholamines, exhibited blue-green fluorophores which were most prominent in the anterior ectoderm. Such fluorescence was associated with sensory cells, ganglionic cells and the neural plexus. Pretreatment of planulae with neuropharmacological agents which prevent reuptake (reserpine) or cause release (nicotine, ephedrine) of catecholamines caused a diminution of the fluorophores. Pretreatment of animals with 6-hydroxydopamine, which causes destruction of catecholamine-containing cells, prevented any fluorescent response. Ultrastructural examination of reserpine-treated planulae revealed a dramatic reduction in the populations of dense-cored vesicles and electron-dense droplets. Furthermore, many of the vesicles and droplets remaining in reserpinized animals appeared washed out, i.e. stained faintly. Exposure of planulae to exogenous norepinephrine caused premature, rapid metamorphosis and produced polyps with slightly stunted tentacles and pitted, irregular hypostomes. Exposure of planulae to nicotine caused similar effects. Rearing planulae in sea water containing alpha blockers, phentolamine and tolazoline, had no discernible effect on behaviour (motility, phototactic response) or gross morphology. However, planulae raised in sea water containing propranolol, a beta blocker, ceased all movement, became tack-shaped and died within 72 h. These results meet multiple criteria for the identification of catecholamines in hydrozoan planulae and suggest that such catecholamines may function as neurotransmitters, neurohormones or neuromodulators during larval development.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships between 32 species of rodents representing 14 subfamilies of Muridae and four subfamilies of Dipodidae were studied using sequences of the nuclear protein-coding genes Lecithin Cholesterol Acyl Transferase (LCAT) and von Willebrand Factor (vWF). An examination of some evolutionary properties of each data matrix indicates that the two genes are rather complementary, with lower rates of nonsynonymous substitutions for LCAT. Both markers exhibit a wide range of GC3 percentages (55%-89%), with several taxa above 70% GC3 for vWF, which indicates that those exonic regions might belong to the richest class of isochores. The primary sequence data apparently harbor few saturations, except for transitions on third codon positions for vWF, as indicated by comparisons of observed and expected pairwise values of substitutions. Phylogenetic trees based on 1,962 nucleotidic sites from the two genes indicate that the 14 Muridae subfamilies are organized into five major lineages. An early isolation leads to the clade uniting the fossorial Spalacinae and semifossorial Rhizomyinae with a strong robustness. The second lineage includes a series of African taxa representing nesomyines, dendromurines, cricetomyines, and the sole living member of mystromyines. The third one comprises only the mouselike hamster CALOMYSCUS: The fourth clade represents the cricetines, myospalacines, sigmodontines, and arvicolines, whereas the fifth one comprises four "traditional" subfamilies (Gerbillinae, Murinae, Otomyinae, and Acomyinae). Within these groups, we confirm the monophyly of almost all studied subfamilies, namely, Spalacinae, Rhizomyinae, Nesomyinae, Cricetomyinae, Arvicolinae, Sigmodontinae, Cricetinae, Gerbillinae, Acomyinae, and Murinae. Finally, we present evidence that the sister group of Acomyinae is Gerbillinae, and we confirm a nested position of Myospalacinae within Cricetinae and Otomyinae within Murinae. From a biogeographical point of view, the five main lineages spread and radiated from Asia with different degrees of success: the first three groups are now represented by a limited number of species and genera localized in some regions, whereas the last two groups radiated in a large variety of species and genera dispersed all over the world.  相似文献

Anguilla japonica and Anguilla marmorata share overlapping spawning sites, similar drifting routes, and comparable larval durations. However, they exhibit allopatric geographical distributions in East Asia. To clarify this ecological discrepancy, glass eels from estuaries in Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and China were collected monthly, and the survival rate of A. marmorata under varying water salinities and temperatures was examined. The composition ratio of these 2 eel species showed a significant latitude cline, matching the 24 °C sea surface temperature isotherm in winter. Both species had opposing temperature preferences for recruitment. A. marmorata prefer high water temperatures and die at low water temperatures. In contrast, A. japonica can endure low water temperatures, but their recruitment is inhibited by high water temperatures. Thus, A. japonica glass eels, which mainly spawn in summer, are preferably recruited to Taiwan, China, Korea, and Japan by the Kuroshio and its branch waters in winter. Meanwhile, A. marmorata glass eels, which spawn throughout the year, are mostly screened out in East Asia in areas with low-temperature coastal waters in winter. During summer, the strong northward currents from the South China Sea and Changjiang River discharge markedly block the Kuroshio invasion and thus restrict the approach of A. marmorata glass eels to the coasts of China and Korea. The differences in the preferences of the recruitment temperature for glass eels combined with the availability of oceanic currents shape the real geographic distribution of Anguilla japonica and Anguilla marmorata, making them "temperate" and "tropical" eels, respectively.  相似文献

The Vancouver Island marmot is the most endangered mammal of Canada. Factors which have brought this population to the verge of extinction have not yet been fully elucidated, but the effects of deforestation and habitat fragmentation on survival rates, as well as those of variation in rainfall, temperature, snowpack depth and snowmelt strongly suggest that marmots on the island are struggling to keep pace with environmental changes. Genetic analyses, however, seem to indicate that the Vancouver Island marmot may merely represent a melanistic population of its parental species on the mainland. Were it not for its black pelage colour, it is unlikely that it would have attracted much attention as a conservation priority. Our study uses three-dimensional coordinates of cranial landmarks to further assess phenotypic differentiation of the Vancouver Island marmot. A pattern of strong interspecific divergence and low intraspecific variation was found which is consistent with aspects of drift-driven models of speciation. However, the magnitude of shape differences relative to the putatively neutral substitutions in synonymous sites of cytochrome b is too large for being compatible with a simple neutral model. A combination of bottlenecks and selective pressures due to natural and human-induced changes in the environment may offer a parsimonious explanation for the large phenotypic differentiation observed in the species. Our study exemplifies the usefulness of a multidisciplinary approach to the study of biological diversity for a better understanding of evolutionary models and to discover aspects of diversity that may be undetected by using only a few genetic markers to characterize population divergence and uniqueness.  相似文献

One foundational question in contemporarybiology is how to `rejoin evolution anddevelopment. The emerging research program(evolutionary developmental biology or`evo-devo) requires a meshing of disciplines,concepts, and explanations that have beendeveloped largely in independence over the pastcentury. In the attempt to comprehend thepresent separation between evolution anddevelopment much attention has been paid to thesplit between genetics and embryology in theearly part of the 20th century with itscodification in the exclusion of embryologyfrom the Modern Synthesis. This encourages acharacterization of evolutionary developmentalbiology as the marriage of evolutionary theoryand embryology via developmental genetics. Butthere remains a largely untold story about thesignificance of morphology and comparativeanatomy (also minimized in the ModernSynthesis). Functional and evolutionarymorphology are critical for understanding thedevelopment of a concept central toevolutionary developmental biology,evolutionary innovation. Highlighting thediscipline of morphology and the concepts ofinnovation and novelty provides an alternativeway of conceptualizing the `evo and the `devoto be synthesized.  相似文献

Endoglycoceramidase (EGCase; EC 3.2.1.123) is an enzyme capable of cleaving the glycosidic linkage between oligosaccharides and ceramides of various glycosphingolipids. We detected strong EGCase activity in animals belonging to Cnidaria, Mollusca, and Annelida and cloned the enzyme from a hydra, Hydra magnipapillata. The hydra EGCase, consisting of 517 amino acid residues, showed 19.2% and 50.2% identity to the Rhodcoccus and jellyfish EGCases, respectively. The recombinant hydra enzyme, expressed in CHOP (Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing polyoma LT antigen) cells, hydrolyzed [14C]GM1a to produce [14C]ceramide with a pH optimum at 3.0-3.5. Whole mount in situ hybridization and immunocytochemical analysis revealed that EGCase was widely expressed in the endodermal layer, especially in digestive cells. GM1a injected into the gastric cavity was incorporated and then directly catabolized by EGCase to produce GM1a-oligosaccharide and ceramide, which were further degraded by exoglycosidases and ceramidase, respectively. However, hydra exoglycosidases did not hydrolyze GM1a directly. These results indicate that the EGCase is indispensable for the catabolic processing of dietary glycosphingolipids in hydra, demonstrating the unique catabolic pathway for glyosphingolipids in the animal.  相似文献

Summary Both the natural metamorphic stimulus (an unidentified bacterial product) and an artificial trigger of metamorphosis (Cs+) cause large calcium transients in planula cells of the hydrozoanMitrocomella polydiademata. When these transients are inhibited with calcium channel blockers, metamorphosis is also inhibited. All cells of theMitrocomella planula contain a calcium-specific photoprotein. The cells where the calcium transients occur during natural- and Cs+-induced metamorphosis have been visualized in normal and entoderm free planulae that lack ganglion cells, using a compound microscope coupled to an image intensifier and video camera. During bacteria- and Cs+-induced metamorphosis, groups of contiguous cells, occupying from about 10% to the entire visible surface of the planula, simultaneously exhibit calcium transients. When the cells that initiate a transient comprise only part of the planula surface, the calcium transient frequently propagates and can eventually involve every cell on the visible planula surface. There is no special site on the planula surface where calcium transients are more apt to be initiated. There is no indication that propagation of a flash in one direction is more likely than in another. The velocity of propagation is virtually the same in all directions. The only feature of the spatial distribution of bacteria- and Cs+-induced calcium transients that appears to be necessary for the induction of metamorphosis is that at least one transient must involve all of the surface cells of the planula. The spatial behavior of calcium transients is the same in entoderm free planulae (lacking ganglion cells) as in normal planulae. The propagation of these calcium transients most probably occurs via epithelial conduction. This metamorphic step involving calcium transients is probably the intercellular communication system that informs the cells of the planula that metamorphosis will commence.Metamorphosis inMitrocomella planulae can also be induced with phorbol esters. Calcium transients do not occur during phorbol ester-induced metamorphosis, indicating that they act at a different point in the metamorphic pathway. Calcium channel blockers do not inhibit phorbol ester-induced metamorphosis. Inhibitors of protein kinase-C, inhibit both phorbol ester-induced metamorphosis and Cs+- and bacteria-induced metamorphosis, but have no effect on the calcium transients induced by Cs+. This indicates that the calcium transient mediated step in the metamorphic pathway occurs prior to protein kinase-C activation. Calcium transients probably play a major role in activating protein kinase-C.  相似文献

Genes, like organisms, struggle for existence, and the most successful genes persist and widely disseminate in nature. The unbiased determination of the most successful genes requires access to sequence data from a wide range of phylogenetic taxa and ecosystems, which has finally become achievable thanks to the deluge of genomic and metagenomic sequences. Here, we analyzed 10 million protein-encoding genes and gene tags in sequenced bacterial, archaeal, eukaryotic and viral genomes and metagenomes, and our analysis demonstrates that genes encoding transposases are the most prevalent genes in nature. The finding that these genes, classically considered as selfish genes, outnumber essential or housekeeping genes suggests that they offer selective advantage to the genomes and ecosystems they inhabit, a hypothesis in agreement with an emerging body of literature. Their mobile nature not only promotes dissemination of transposable elements within and between genomes but also leads to mutations and rearrangements that can accelerate biological diversification and—consequently—evolution. By securing their own replication and dissemination, transposases guarantee to thrive so long as nucleic acid-based life forms exist.  相似文献

Background

The Chinese government lists advanced schistosomiasis as a leading healthcare priority due to its serious health and economic impacts, yet it has not been included in the estimates of schistosomiasis burden in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. Therefore, the quality of life and disability weight (DW) for the advanced cases of schistosomiasis japonica have to be taken into account in the re-estimation of burden of disease due to schistosomiasis.

Methodology/Principal Findings

A patient-based quality-of-life evaluation was performed for advanced schistosomiasis japonica. Suspected or officially registered advanced cases in a Schistosoma japonicum-hyperendemic county of the People''s Republic of China (P.R. China) were screened using a short questionnaire and physical examination. Disability and morbidity were assessed in confirmed cases, using the European quality of life questionnaire with an additional cognitive dimension (known as the “EQ-5D plus”), ultrasonography, and laboratory testing. The age-specific DW of advanced schistosomiasis japonica was estimated based on patients'' self-rated health scores on the visual analogue scale of the questionnaire. The relationships between health status, morbidity and DW were explored using multivariate regression models. Of 506 candidates, 215 cases were confirmed as advanced schistosomiasis japonica and evaluated. Most of the patients reported impairments in at least one health dimension, such as pain or discomfort (90.7%), usual activities (87.9%), and anxiety or depression (80.9%). The overall DW was 0.447, and age-specific DWs ranged from 0.378 among individuals aged 30–44 years to 0.510 among the elderly aged ≥60 years. DWs are positively associated with loss of work capacity, psychological abnormality, ascites, and active hepatitis B virus, while splenectomy and high albumin were protective factors for quality of life.

Conclusions/Significance

These patient-preference disability estimates could provide updated data for a revision of the GBD, as well as for evidence-based decision-making in P.R. China''s national schistosomiasis control program.  相似文献

1. The timing of reproduction was investigated in six Scottish freshwater pearl mussel populations from 1993 to 2002. Gravid females were examined and the release of mussel larvae (glochidia) was monitored. 2. Annual spawning (oviposition) and spat (glochidial release) events occurred during June to July and June to September, respectively. 3. Between‐river differences in timing seem to be related to water temperature. Mussels in the warmest rivers tend to spawn and spat first, and vice‐versa. 4. Thermal variations also seem to influence the timing of reproduction within rivers, which can be delayed by several weeks during cold years. At least 3000°‐days occur between annual episodes of glochidial release. 5. The timing of spawning is determined gradually, probably by a thermal summation effect. 6. The release stage occurs as a sudden, synchronised event, with most of the glochidia spat over 1–2 days, indicating that it is triggered by an environmental cue. Sudden changes in water temperature and/or river level often result in spats, and the underlying mechanism may be respiratory.  相似文献

In the hydrozoan Phialidium gregarium, the constitutive calcium influx of cleavage stage embryos in sea water is 1.96 +/- 0.75 x 10(-15) moles/embryo/minute. Treating embryos with 227 mM KCl in seawater briefly increases the calcium influx more than 100-fold, to 3.9 x 10(-13) mol/embryo/min. About 62% of the KCl-induced calcium influx is due to calcium flowing through voltage-sensitive calcium channels. This causes a marked intracellular calcium transient and secretion of intracellular vesicles. The other component (approximately 38%) of the calcium influx occurs via fluid phase endocytosis of the extracellular medium (detected using extracellular 3H-sucrose). KCl-treatment of 45Ca loaded embryos induces a 45Ca efflux which can reach peak fractional rates of 0.98/min, during which 55-75% (mean 66%) of the total 45Ca is lost. The KCl-induced calcium efflux is due, in part, to secretion because loaded 3H-sucrose is effluxed simultaneously. This pathway may be important for the calcium efflux necessary for long-term calcium homeostasis in cells.  相似文献

Swimming in Aequorea is controlled by a network of electrically coupled neurons (swim motorneurons) located in the inner nerve ring. The network is made up of the largest neurons in the ring, up to 22 microns in diameter. Intracellular recordings from swim motorneurons reveal slow membrane potential oscillations and a superimposed barrage of synaptic "noise." The synaptic noise, but not the slow oscillations, is eliminated in seawater containing an elevated Mg++ concentration. The swim motorneurons produce a rapid burst of two to eight action potentials preceding each contraction of the subumbrella. Spontaneous bursting persists in high-Mg++ seawater. Injected ramp currents indicated a "bursty" character of the swim motorneurons as suprathreshold depolarizations produced repetitive bursting with an increasing burst frequency with increased depolarization. Hyperpolarizing currents locally blocked spiking in swim motorneurons. Intercellular coupling was demonstrated with Lucifer Yellow injection and dual electrode recordings. In dye fills, only the large neurons of the inner nerve ring were dye-coupled. Two pieces of evidence suggest that swim motorneurons activate the overlying epithelial cells via chemical synapses. First, direct synaptic connections have been noted in ultrastructural examination of the inner nerve ring region. Second, dual recordings from a swim motorneuron and an epithelial cell reveal a 1:1 correspondence between neuron spikes and epithelial synaptic potentials. The synaptic potentials occur with a latency as short as 3 ms which is constant in any one recording session. The results suggest that the swim motorneuron network of Aequorea not only performs a motorneuron function, but also serves as the pattern generator for swimming activity.  相似文献
