During 4 years continuous measurements of N-trace gas exchange were carried out at the forest floor-atmosphere interface at the Höglwald Forest that is highly affected by atmospheric N-deposition. The measurements included spruce control, spruce limed and beech sites. Based on these field measurements and on intensive laboratory measurements of N2-emissions from the soils of the beech and spruce control sites, a total balance of N-gas emissions was calculated. NO2-deposition was in a range of –1.6 –2.9 kg N ha–1 yr–1 and no huge differences between the different sites could be demonstrated. In contrast to NO2-deposition, NO- and N2O-emissions showed a huge variability among the different sites. NO emissions were highest at the spruce control site (6.4–9.1 kg N ha–1 yr–1), lowest at the beech site (2.3–3.5 kg N ha–1 yr–1) and intermediate at the limed spruce site (3.4–5.4 kg N ha–1 yr–1). With regard to N2O-emissions, the following ranking between the sites was found: beech (1.6–6.6 kg N ha–1 yr–1) >> spruce limed (0.7–4.0 kg N ha–1 yr–1) > spruce control (0.4–3.1 kg N ha–1 yr–1). Average N-trace gas emissions (NO, NO2, N2O) for the years 1994–1997 were 6.8 kg N ha–1 yr–1 at the spruce control site, 3.6 kg N ha–1 yr–1 at the limed spruce site and 4.5 kg N ha–1 yr–1 at the beech site. Considering N2-losses, which were significantly higher at the beech (12.4 kg N ha–1 yr–1) than at the spruce control site (7.2 kg N ha–1 yr–1), the magnitude of total gaseous N losses, i.e. N2-N + NO-N + NO2-N + N2O-N, could be calculated for the first time for a forest ecosystem. Total gaseous N-losses were 14.0 kg N ha–1 yr–1 at the spruce control site and 15.5 kg N ha–1 yr–1 at the beech site, respectively. In view of the huge interannual variability of N-trace gas fluxes and the pronounced site differences in N-gas emissions it is concluded that more research is needed in order to fully understand patterns of microbial N-cycling and N-gas production/emission in forest ecosystems and mechanisms of reactions of forest ecosystems to the ecological stress factor of atmospheric N-input.  相似文献

Summary Subterranean clover plants were grown as swards (about 2000 plants/m2) under controlled conditions with N provided either by N2-fixation (NO 3 withheld) or by assimilation of NO 3 (NO 3 supplied). Crop growth rates were measured by dry matter sampling over periods of up to 70 days at PPFD values of 400–1000 mole quanta/m2/s. When NO 3 was supplied from sowing the swards grew more rapidly than when the swards were not supplied with NO 3 and plants had to establish an N2-fixing apparatus. When inter-plant competition was reduced within the sward, a difference in growth rate in favour of NO 3 -fed plants continued for at least 50 days. When however, a closed canopy was allowed to form, the NO 3 -fed swards had more dry weight than the N2-fed swards at the time of canopy closure but thereafter the two swards grew at similar rates at light flux densities of above about 800 mole quanta/m2/s. At light flux densities of about 400 mole quanta/m2/s N2-fed swards had a growth rate 70–80% of that of NO 3 -fed plants. NO 3 -fed plants had a higher organic N content than did N2-fed plants under all conditions.  相似文献

White clover plants were grown for 97 days under two temperature regimes (20/15°C and 8/5°C day/night temperatures) and were supplied with either small amounts (a total of 80 mg N pot–1) of ammonium (NH 4 + ) or nitrate (NO 3 ) nitrogen, or received no mineral N and relied on N2 fixation. Greatest growth and total leaf area of clover plants occurred in N2 fixing and NO 3 -fed plants grown at 20/15°C and poorest growth occurred in NH 4 + -fed plants grown at 8/5°C. Nodule mass per plant was greater at 8/5°C due to increased nodule numbers rather than increased dry weight per nodule. This compensated to some extent for the reduced N2-fixing activity per unit dry weight of nodule tissue found at the low growth temperature up to 116 d after sowing, but thereafter both activity per nodule dry weight and activity per plant were greater at the low temperature. Highest nitrate reductase activity (NRA) per g fresh weight and total activity per leaf, petiole or root occurred in NO 3 -fed plants at 8/5°C. Low growth temperature resulted in a greater partitioning of total plant NRA to the roots of NO 3 -fed plants. The results are considered in relation to the use of N fertiliser in the spring under field conditions.  相似文献

Summary Pre-cultivated, nodulated and non-nodulated plants of black alder (Alnus glutinosa) and sea buckthorn (Hippophaë rhamnoides ssp.rhamnoides) were grown on different N sources, with and without acidity control. Dry matter yields were lowest when plants were supplied with only NO 3 and were much greater when NH 4 + was supplied either alone or in combination with NO 3 as long as the external pH was controlled; the final yields of the N2-fixing plants were relatively low, especially withH. rhamnoides. Without acidity control, yields were greatly reduced in the presence of NH 4 + .Proton or hydroxyl-ion effluxes, calculated on the basis of plant analyses, agreed well with measured excretion values. Without pH adjustment, the total proton efflux into the external solution was greater inA. glutinosa than inH. rhamnoides. Both species, but particularlyA. glutinosa, displayed the highest nitrate reductase activity in the roots.  相似文献

Summary Total denitrification (N2O+N2) and nitrous oxide emission were measured on intact soil cores using the acetylene inhibition technique.Total denitrification from the depth 0–8 cm during the growth period from April to August was 7 kg N/ha from plots supplied with 30 kg N/ha and 19 kg N/ha from plots supplied with 120 kg N/ha. The amounts of precipitation, plant growth, and N application were found to affect the denitrification rate. These factors also affected the ratio (N2O+N2)/N2O, which varied from 1.0 to 7.2. Plant growth and precipitation increased the proportion of N2 produced, whereas a high nitrate content increased the proportion of N2O.  相似文献

Field experiments were conducted during the rainy reasons of 1989, 1990 and 1991 on an acid sandy soil in Niger, West Africa, to assess the effect of millet straw application (+CR) on growth and N2 fixation of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.).Three years of +CR (4 t ha–1 yr–1) increased symbiotic N2 fixation, total dry matter production (haulm plus pods) by 83% and total nitrogen (N) accumulation by 100%. Concentration of N in the shoot dry matter and total N in the soil were only slightly affected by the +CR treatment.Crop residue application increased the concentration of potassium (K) and molybdenum (Mo) and decreased the concentrations of aluminium (Al) and manganese (Mn) distinctly, both in the plant (shoot and nodule dry matter) and in the soil. The increase in dry matter production and N uptake was mainly due to improved N2 fixation reflected by enhanced formation and growth of nodules as well as nitrogenase activity. This was attributed to improved chemical soil conditions, particularly to the higher availability of Mo and the lowered content of available Al and Mn.Although with the application of 4 t CR ha–1, 60 kg K were supplied, increased growth could not be attributed to the additional supply of K.ICRISAT Journal Article No. 1229.ICRISAT Journal Article No. 1229.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixed in 13 provenances of Acacia albida and 11 isolines of Leucaena leucocephala inoculated with effective Rhizobium strains was measured by 15N techniques and the total N difference method. In the test soil, on the average, L. leucocephala derived about 65% of its total N from atmospheric N2 fixation compared to about 20% by A. albida. Significant differences in the percentage of N derived from atmospheric N2 (% Ndfa) occurred, between provenances or isolines within species. The % Ndfa ranged from 37 to 74% within L. leucocephala and from 6 to 37 within A. albida; (equivalent to 20–50 mg N plant–1 and 4–37 mg N plant–1 for the two species over three months, respectively) and was correlated with the nodule mass (r=0.91). The time course of N2 fixation of three selected provenances (low, intermediate and good fixers) was followed at 12 weekly intervals over a 36 week period. The % Ndfa of all provenances and isolines increased with time; and except for one of the L. leucocephala provenances, % Ndfa was similar within species at the 36 weeks harvest. There was a significant correlation between % Ndfa and the amount of N2 fixed (r=0.96). Significant interactions occurred between provenances and N treatments and often growth of uninoculated but N fertilized plants was less variable than for inoculated unfertilized plants.  相似文献

Summary Non-nodulatedalnus glutinosa plants were grown for 6 weeks in nutrient solutions using 3 combined-N treatments (NO3; NO3/NH4; and NH4) at a total N level of 4 meq.l–1, and growth was ccmpared with nodulated plants at zero N (N2 fixation). Of the combined-N sources, 100 per cent NH4 resulted in the highest dry matter yields when the solution pH was adjusted daily atc. 6. The dry matter yield was lowest with NO3.During the first 3 weeks, the yield of the N2-fixing plants was as high as that of the NH4 plants, but fell relatively behind during the second 3-week period. These effects could be attributed to higher initial N contents and higher shoot:root ratios, respectively, in the N2-fixing plants. Specific rates of N acquisition in the root were of a comparable order of magnitude for the combined-N and zero-N treatments. When NO3 was taken up, it was almost completely reduced in the roots. Regardless of N source there was a large excess of cations (C) relative to inorganic anions (A) in the plants, which was presumed to be balanced by an equivalent amount of organic anions (C-A). The relatively small differences in generation of organic anions for the various modes of N supply indicated the relative importance of the proton pump when NH4 or N2 was the N source. Proton or hydroxyl-ion effluxes, calculated on the basis of plant analyses, were generally in good agreement with measured excretion values. The acidity generation with N2 fixation amounted toc. 0.5 meq H+.mmol–1 Norg, which was distinctly higher than the range of 0.1–0.2 mentioned by Raven and Smith43 for dinitrogen-fixing plants.Without pH adjustment, specific rates of cation uptake and carboxylate generation were strongly depressed as the acidity increased, when NO3/NH4, NH4 and N2 were the N sources. Growth ofAlnus glutinosa appeared to be still normal at a pH ofc. 2.8. During the final 3 weeks, only the NH4 plants ceased growing at a pH of 2.6.  相似文献

Nitrogen fixation in perennial forage legumes in the field   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Nitrogen acquisition is one of the most important factors for plant production, and N contribution from biological N2 fixation can reduce the need for industrial N fertilizers. Perennial forages are widespread in temperate and boreal areas, where much of the agriculture is based on livestock production. Due to the symbiosis with N2-fixing rhizobia, perennial forage legumes have great potential to increase sustainability in such grassland farming systems. The present work is a summary of a large number of studies investigating N2 fixation in three perennial forage legumes primarily relating to ungrazed northern temperate/boreal areas. Reported rates of N2 fixation in above-ground plant tissues were in the range of up to 373 kg N ha–1 year–1 in red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), 545 kg N ha–1 year–1 in white clover (T. repens L.) and 350 kg N ha–1 year–1 in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). When grown in mixtures with grasses, these species took a large fraction of their nitrogen from N2 fixation (average around 80%), regardless of management, dry matter yield and location. There was a large variation in N2 fixation data and part of this variation was ascribed to differences in plant production between years. Studies with experiments at more than one site showed that also geographic location was an important source of variation. On the other hand, when all data were plotted against latitude, there was no simple correlation. Climatic conditions seem therefore to give as high N2 fixation per ha and year in northern areas (around 60°N) as in areas with a milder climate (around 40°N). Analyzing whole plants or just above-ground plant parts influenced the estimate of N2 fixation, and most reported values were underestimated since roots were not included. Despite large differences in environmental conditions, such as N fertilization and geographic location, N2 fixation (Nfix; kg N per ha and year) was significantly (P<0.001) correlated to legume dry matter yield (DM; kg per ha and year). Very rough, but nevertheless valuable estimations of Nfix in legume/grass mixtures (roots not considered) are given by Nfix = 0.026DM + 7 for T. pratense, Nfix = 0.031DM + 24 for T. repens, and Nfix = 0.021DM + 17 for M. sativa.  相似文献

The impact of sustained low external concentrations of NO 3 (0, 10, 100 and 1000 mmol m–3) on plant growth and the relative acquisition of N through N2 fixation and NO 3 uptake by established, nodulated white clover (Trifolium repens L. cv. Blanca) was studied over 28 days in flowing solution culture. Nitrogen fixation was measured by N difference and 15N dilution methods. Plants supplied with NO 3 achieved higher relative growth rates (% MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafiart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXatLxBI9gBaerbd9wDYLwzYbItLDharqqtubsr% 4rNCHbGeaGqiVu0Je9sqqrpepC0xbbL8F4rqqrFfpeea0xe9Lq-Jc9% vqaqpepm0xbba9pwe9Q8fs0-yqaqpepae9pg0FirpepeKkFr0xfr-x% fr-xb9adbaqaaeGaciGaaiaabeqaamaabaabaaGcbaGabmiEayaara% aaaa!3702!\[\bar x\]=0.091 d–1) compared with control plants dependent on N2 fixation (0.073 d–1). Nitrate plants showed progressive increases in shoot: root d.w. ratios from 4 to 6.5–7.6 between days 0–28, compared with 5.1 on day 28 for control plants. Increases in both nodule d.w. and numbers per plant were inhibited after day seven at all concentrations of NO 3 . The severity of inhibition of N2 fixation increased with increasing NO 3 concentration and with time. The total amounts of N2 fixed per plant between days 0–7 after supplying 10, 100 and 1000 mmol m–3 NO 3 , respectively, were 37–39, 28–30 and 0–13%, of the total N acquired. Between days 7–28 the proportional contributions of N2 fixation to total N acquisition declined to 3, 0.5 and 0%, respectively, in these treatments. The corresponding mean specific rates of N2 fixation between days 0–7 were, respectively, 5.4, 3.2, and 2.0 mmol N d–1 g–1 nodule d.w., compared with 7.9 mmol N d–1 g–1 nodule d.w. for zero NO 3 plants. There was no evidence of a transitory increase in N2 fixation following the addition of NO 3 , even at the lowest supply concentration.  相似文献

When a new strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was grown aerobically and then transferred to anaerobic conditions, cells reduced NO 3 quantitatively to NO 2 in NO 3 -respiration. In the absence of nitrate, NO 2 was immediately reduced to NO or N2O but not to N2 indicating that NO 2 -reductase but not N2O-reductase was active. The formation of the products NO or N2O depended on the pH in the medium and the concentration of NO 2 present. When P. aeruginosa was grown anaerobically for at least three davs N2O-reductase was also active. Such cells reduced NO to N2 via N2O. The new strain generated a H+-gradient and grew by reducing N2O to N2 but not by converting NO to N2O. For comparison, Azospirillum brasilense Sp7 showed the same pattern of NO-reduction. In contrast, Paracoccus denitrificans formed 3.5 H+/NO during the reduction of NO to N2O in oxidant pulse experiments but could not grow in the presence of NO. Thus the NO-reduction pattern in P. denitrificans on one side and P. aeruginosa and A. brasilense on the other was very different. The mechanistic implications of such differences are discussed.  相似文献

Nitrogen cycling in a northern hardwood forest: Do species matter?   总被引:23,自引:7,他引:16
To investigate the influence of individual tree species on nitrogen (N) cycling in forests, we measured key characteristics of the N cycle in small single-species plots of five dominant tree species in the Catskill Mountains of New York State. The species studied were sugar maple (Acer saccharum), American beech (Fagus grandifolia), yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), and red oak (Quercus rubra). The five species varied markedly in N cycling characteristics. For example, hemlock plots consistently showed characteristics associated with "slow" N cycling, including low foliar and litter N, high soil C:N, low extractable N pools, low rates of potential net N mineralization and nitrification and low NO 3 amounts trapped in ion-exchange resin bags buried in the mineral soil. Sugar maple plots had the lowest soil C:N, and the highest levels of soil characteristics associated with NO 3 production and loss (nitrification, extractable NO 3 , and resin bag NO 3 ). In contrast, red oak plots had near-average net mineralization rates and soil C:N ratios, but very low values of the variables associated with NO 3 production and loss. Correlations between soil N transformations and litter concentrations of N, lignin, lignin:N ratio, or phenolic constituents were generally weak. The inverse correlation between net nitrification rate and soil C:N that has been reported in the literature was present in this data set only if red oak plots were excluded from the analysis. This study indicates that tree species can exert a strong control on N cycling in forest ecosystems that appears to be mediated through the quality of soil organic matter, but that standard measures of litter quality cannot explain the mechanism of control.  相似文献

Laboratory and field measurements of the flux of ammonia to forest floor canopies of spruce and beech stands at the Höglwald site in southern Bavaria are reported. Measurements were performed with an open chamber method. A linearity between ammonia concentration and ammonia flux from the atmosphere to the ground floor canopy was detected. Deposition of ammonia showed no saturation even at air concentrations up to 50 g NH3 m–3 air. Temperature, water content and the moss layer of the ground floor canopy had a minor influence on the deposition velocity in laboratory experiments. Deposition velocity of ammonia was higher to the spruce (1.3 cm s–1), and limed spruce ground floor canopy (1.17 cm s–1) compared to the beech stand (0.79 cm s–1). In field studies, a diurnal course of the deposition velocity was detected with highest velocities in midday and minor during night times, but not in the climatic chamber. The flux of ammonia to the ground floor canopy was estimated of app. 10 kg N ha–1 yr–1 for the soil under spruce, 9 kg N ha–1 yr–1 for the limed spruce and 6 kg N ha–1yr–1 for the soil under beech. The fluxes are interpreted as fluxes from the atmosphere to the ground canopies of the stands.  相似文献

Preference for NH4+ or NO3 nutrition by the perennial legume Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr. was assessed by supplying plants with NH4+ and NO3 alone or mixed at equal concentrations (0.5 mM) in hydroponic culture. In addition, growth responses of S. sesban to NH4+ and NO3 nutrition and the effects on root nodulation and nutrient and mineral composition of the plant tissues were evaluated in a hydroponic setup at a range of external concentration of NH4+ and NO3 (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 2 and 5 mM). Seedlings of S. sesban grew equally well when supplied with either NH4+ or NO3 alone or mixed and had high relative growth rates (RGRs) ranging between 0.19 and 0.21 d−1. When larger plants of S. sesban were supplied with NH4+ or NO3 alone, the RGRs and shoot elongation rates were not affected by the external concentration of inorganic N. At external N concentrations up to 0.5 mM nodulation occurred and contributed to the N nutrition through fixation of gaseous N2 from the atmosphere. For both NH4+ and NO3-fed plants the N concentration in the plant tissues, particularly water-extractable NO3, increased at high supply concentrations, and concentrations of mineral cations generally decreased. It is concluded that S. sesban can grow without an external inorganic N supply by fixing atmospheric N2 gas via root nodules. Also, S. sesban grows well on both NH4+ and NO3 as the external N source and the plant can tolerate relatively high concentrations of NH4+. This wide ecological amplitude concerning N nutrition makes S. sesban very useful as a N2-fixing fallow crop in N deficient areas and also a candidate species for use in constructed wetland systems for the treatment of NH4+ rich waters.  相似文献

New information on N uptake and transport of inorganic and organic N in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi is reviewed here. Hyphae of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae (Nicol. and Gerd.) Gerd. and Trappe (BEG 107) were shown to transport N supplied as 15N-Gly to wheat plants after a 48 h labelling period in semi-hydroponic (Perlite), non-sterile, compartmentalised pot cultures. Of the 15N supplied to hyphae in pot cultures over 48 h, 0.2 and 6% was transported to plants supplied with insufficient N or sufficient N, respectively. The increased 15N uptake at the higher N supply was related to the higher hyphal length density at the higher N supply. These findings were supported by results from in vitro and monoxenic studies. Excised hyphae from four Glomus isolates (BEG 84, 107, 108 and 110) acquired N from both inorganic (15NH4 15NO3, 15NO3 or 15NH4 +) and organic (15N-Gly and 15N-Glu, except in BEG 84 where amino acid uptake was not tested) sources in vitro during short-term experiments. Confirming these studies under sterile conditions where no bacterial mineralisation of organic N occurred, monoxenic cultures of Glomus intraradices Schenk and Smith were shown to transport N from organic sources (15N-Gly and 15N-Glu) to Ri T-DNA transformed, AM-colonised carrot roots in a long-term experiment. The higher N uptake (also from organic N) by isolates from nutrient poor sites (BEG 108 and 110) compared to that from a conventional agricultural field implied that ecotypic differences occur. Although the arbuscular mycorrhizal isolates used contributed to the acquisition of N from both inorganic and organic sources by the host plants/roots used, this was not enough to increase the N nutritional status of the mycorrhizal compared to non-mycorrhizal hosts. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary White clover (Trifolium repens L.) plants grown in pots and supplied with the same concentration x days of15N labelled nitrate, but in contrasting patterns and doses had similar N concentrations but differed in the proportions devived from N2 fixation and nitrate. N2-fixation and nodule dry weight responded rapidly (2–3 days) to changes in nitrate availability. Plants exposed frequently to small doses of nitrate took up more nitrate (and hence relied less on N2-fixation) and had greater dry weights and shoot: root ratios than those exposed to larger doses less often. In mixed ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)/clover communities clover's ability to either successfully compete for nitrate or fix N2 gave it consistently higher N concentrations than grass whether they were given high or low nitrate nutrient. This higher N concentration was accompanied by greater dry weights than grass in the low nitrate swards but not where high levels of nitrate were applied.  相似文献

Four from 18 strains of Erwinia herbicola tested had nitrogenase activity and grew with N2 as sole source of nitrogen under strict anaerobic conditions with a doubling time of 20–24 h. Nitrogenase activity started only 96–120 h after transfer to a special medium maintained under anaerobic conditions. A ten fold increase in protein per culture found after the maximum nitrogenase activity of 80–130 nmol C2H4. mg protein-1·min-1 was accompanied by a fall in pH of the medium (20 mM phosphate buffer and in 125 mM Tris-buffer) from pH 7.2 to 5.4 or less, but only to 6.8 in 100 mM phosphate buffer. In all cases we found a sharp curtailing of nitrogenase activity 48 h after the maximum. The bacteria utilized only 35–50% of the nitrogen fixed for growth. Erwinia herbicola strains differed from two strains of Enterobacter agglomerans in being unable to fix nitrogen on agar surfaces exposed to air. Specific nitrogenase activity in Erwinia herbicola is compared with data reported for other Enterobacteriaceae and is found to be higher than that reported for Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae or Citrobacter freundii.  相似文献

In order to quantify N2-emissions from a spruce and a beech site at the Höglwald Forest, a new measuring system was developed, that allowed simultaneous, direct determination of N2- and N2O-emission with high accuracy (detection limit approx. 10 g N m–2 h–1 for N2 and <1 g for N2O) using a gas-flow core method. This method requires exchange of the soil atmosphere with an artificial atmosphere, that differs only in that N2 is substituted by He. The measuring system, the methodology of measurements and validation experiments are described in detail. Due to the huge heterogeneity of denitrification activity in different soil cores taken from our forest sites, no general trends of N2 and N2O production in relation to soil moisture and temperature could be demonstrated. Based on reasonable number of measurements, this work gives for the first time an estimate of the magnitude of N2-losses from temperate forest soils. Both the magnitude of N2-emissions (spruce: 7.2±0.7 kg N2-N ha–1 yr–1; beech: 12.4±3.1 kg N2-N ha–1 yr–1), as well as the N2O–N2 ratio (spruce: 0.136±0.04; beech: 0.52±0.19) were significantly higher for soils from the beech sites as compared to soils from the spruce site. The results suggests that N2-emissions from N-saturated forest soils, still receiving high loads of atmospheric N-deposition, are approx. 30% of atmospheric N-input at the spruce site, and approx. 50% at the beech site. Our results demonstrate that losses of nitrogen in the form of N2 cannot be neglected in the context of calculating N-balances for given forest sites.  相似文献

Common bean,Phaseolus vulgaris L., is known to be ‘inefficient’ in nodulation and N2 fixation although it responds to applied nitrogen. An experiment was conducted to identify and to characterize bean cultivars nodulating in the presence of a high level of nitrogen. Sixteen cultivars and a check for inefficient nodulation, OAC Seaforth, were inoculated and grown for 40 days in replicated pots supplied with zero, 3.5 and 10.5 mM combined nitrogen as NO 3 and NH 4 + . Seven traits relating to nodulation and N2 fixation were all significantly affected by N level (N), cultivar (Cv) and N × Cv interactions (except for root dry weight), indicating that cultivars responded differently to the N treatments. Total dry weight (W) and shoot to root ratio (S/R) increased with the increased N levels. Nodule dry weight (Wn), visual nodulation score (Nv) and nodulation index (Nx) decreased as the N increased. Percent N and N content per plant increased with the increased N level. Plant weight (W) was positively correlated with Wn, Nv and N content and negatively correlated with %N. Nodulation score was positively associated with Wn and plant N content. Genotypes superior in nodulation and N2 fixation in the presence of N were identified. Cultivars Italian Barlotti, California Light Red Kidney, Kentucky Wonder A and Pueblo 152 were selected for further testing and use in improving the nitrate tolerant nodulating characteristic of bean.  相似文献

The chemical compositions of ground water and organic matter in sediments were investigated at a sandy shore of Tokyo Bay, Japan to determine the fate of ground water NO3 . On the basis of Cl distribution in ground water, the beach was classified into freshwater (FR)-, transition (TR)-, and seawater (SW)-zones from the land toward the shoreline. The NO3 and N2O did not behave conservatively with respect to Cl during subsurface mixing of freshwater and seawater, suggesting NO3 consumption and N2O production in the TR-zone. Absence of beach vegetation indicated that NO3 assimilation by higher plants was not as important as NO3 sink. Low NH4 + concentrations in ground water revealed little reduction of NO3 to NH4 +. These facts implied that microbial denitrification and assimilation were the likely sinks for ground water NO3 . The potential activity and number of denitrifiers in water-saturated sediment were highest in the low-chlorinity part of the TR-zone. The location of the highest potential denitrification activity (DN-zone) overlapped with that of the highest NO3 concentration. The C/N ratio and carbon isotope ratio (13C) of organic matter in sediment (< 100 -m) varied from 12.0 to 22.5 and from –22.5 to –25.5, respectively. The 13C value was inversely related to the C/N ratio (r 2 = 0.968, n = 11), which was explained by the mixing of organic matters of terrestrial and marine origins. In the DN-zone, the fine sediments were rich in organic matters with high C/N ratios and low 13C values, implying that dissolved organic matters of terrestrial origin might have been immobilized under slightly saline conditions. A concurrent supply of NO3 and organic matter to the TR-zone by ground water discharge probably generates favorable conditions for denitrifiers. Ground water NO3 discharged to the beach is thus partially denitrified and fixed as microbial biomass before it enters the sea. Further studies are necessary to determine the relative contribution of these processes for NO3 removal.  相似文献
