An all-glass device sultable for the oxido-reductive titrations of air-sensitive compounds is deseribed. The device has a provision for monltoring the optical spectrum and for sampling the reaction mixture with direct transfers of the sample into electron-paramagnetic resonance sample tubes. An on-chip integrated wavelength filter and router device is realized using two-dimensional metal/dielectric nanostructures. The device can filter wavelengths of light from an incident broadband beam, and further route the filtered signals to different ports on the same chip. The footprint of the entire device is only 3.4 μm × 7.3 μm. Both the number of wavelength channels and the central wavelength of each channel can be tuned by adjusting the structure parameters, or by using a pumped laser. This work demonstrates an ultracompact and robust integrated multifunctional device, and provides a novel and flexible method for the integration of nanophotonic devices.  相似文献

In this paper we describe an efficient polymerase chain reaction device which is easy to assemble and requires minimal investment in dedicated equipment. The polymerase chain reaction device consists of three waterbaths, three dual-head peristaltic pumps, an electronic timer and a fabricated water jacket capable of holding microcentrifuge tubes. This device has been successfully used to amplify human factor X genomic DNA in our laboratory.  相似文献

Dielectrophoresis (DEP), the motion of a particle caused by an applied electric field gradient, can concentrate microorganisms non-destructively. In insulator-based dielectrophoresis (iDEP) insulating microstructures produce non-uniform electric fields to drive DEP in microsystems. This article describes the performance of an iDEP device in removing and concentrating bacterial cells, spores and viruses while operated with a DC applied electric field and pressure gradient. Such a device can selectively trap particles when dielectrophoresis overcomes electrokinesis or advection. The dielectrophoretic trapping behavior of labeled microorganisms in a glass-etched iDEP device was observed over a wide range of DC applied electric fields. When fields higher than a particle-specific threshold are applied, particles are reversibly trapped in the device. Experiments with Bacillus subtilis spores and the Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) exhibited higher trapping thresholds than those of bacterial cells. The iDEP device was characterized in terms of concentration factor and removal efficiency. Under the experimental conditions used in this study with an initial dilution of 1 x 105 cells/ml, concentration factors of the order of 3000x and removal efficiencies approaching 100% were observed with Escherichia coli cells. These results are the first characterization of an iDEP device for the concentration and removal of microbes in water.  相似文献

TAVI devices are manufactured with cylindrical frames. However, the frames are rarely cylindrical post-deployment since deformation due to localised under expansion can be induced by calcified material on the native valve leaflets exerting irregular forces upon the frame. Consequently, the leaflets within a deformed TAVI device may undergo elevated stress during operation, which may lead to premature device failure.Using computational analysis a complete TAVI device model was simulated undergoing deployment into an aortic root model derived from CT data for a patient with severe calcific aortic stenosis, followed by a pressure simulated cardiac cycle. The complete analysis was performed eight times, each with the device at a different rotational orientation relative to the native valve, with an increment spacing of 15°.The TAVI device frames consistently featured significant distortions associated with bulky calcified material at the base of the non-coronary sinus. It was found that the average von Mises stress in the prosthetic valves was only increased in one of the cases relative to an idealised device. However, the maximum von Mises stress in the prosthetic valves was elevated in the majority of the cases.Furthermore, it was found that there were preferable orientations to deploy the prosthetic device, in this case, when the prosthetic leaflets were aligned with the native leaflets. As device orientation deviated from this orientation, the stresses in the valve increased because the distance between the prosthetic commissures decreased. This potentially could represent a sufficient increase in stress to induce variation in device lifespan.  相似文献

A device was developed to monitor the vaginal temperature of cattle in a research setting. This device decreases labor involved with monitoring body temperature compared with manual temperature readings, allows for continuous monitoring of vaginal temperature at 1 min intervals, and also allows for temperature measurements without the presence of a human handler or without restraint, which can agitate cattle. The device consists of a blank controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device (designed by Pfizer Animal Health as an indwelling vaginal probe) that holds an indwelling vaginal temperature probe logger. The fabrication of the vaginal probe costs approximately US $325 per unit. Similar rectal and vaginal temperature responses to lipopolysaccharide challenge were observed when vaginal and rectal temperatures were measured simultaneously in the same heifer (P>0.05). Additionally, rectal and vaginal temperatures were highly correlated (r=0.97; P<0.0001). Similar to the rectal temperature monitoring device, the vaginal device allows for the measurement of vaginal temperature without the potential biases associated with the stress response produced as a reaction to the handling by and (or) presence of humans. The vaginal temperature recording device will provide researchers with an additional inexpensive tool to study physiological responses in female cattle.  相似文献

This paper presents a method and a device to position and displace cells. The cells are suspended in a fluid layer trapped between the device and an arbitrary surface such as an object slide or a wafer. The device vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies causing a pressure field in the fluid layer. This pressure field results in a force-field capable of positioning cells. Depending on the way in which the device is excited a 2-D or 3-D force-field can be generated, positioning the cells in lines or points respectively. Furthermore, it is possible to subsequently displace the cells with micrometer accuracy. This has been demonstrated using HL60 and MCF10A cells, and can be achieved without causing damage to the cells.  相似文献

An assistive device is designed to accommodate the special needs of disability that can help people with physical, mental or cognitive challenges go through their day-to-day activities with less difficulty. An assistive device usually provide alternatives to functional limitations imposed by the client's disorder, and thereby minimising rehabilitation costs. It is therefore important to know about how assistive technology will function in all the possible aspects of such disabilities and impairements. When designing a technical device, particularly in conjunction with the target user group, ergonomic issues are therefore important to find out the extent to which an assistive device is convenient or not, and to check the quality performance of assistive technology. Since the question of the match or mismatch of an assistive device and a disabled person requires much attention, it is therefore suggested that paying attention on how an assistive device be ergonomically designed and developed is important. Ergonomic applications are to be applied for increasing motivation of prospective customers through innovative performance of AT. The authors believe that there are opportunities in ergonomic applications to manufacture an assistive device as unique, cost saving, and allows less exertation and reduces energy consumption when it is used. Hence this paper highlights human factors and/or ergonomics consideration in the process of design and development of assistive devices synchronising with gerontechnological research and development aiming to emphasise user's requirement.  相似文献

A new dye-sensitized solar cell driven electrochromic device has been fabricated. The device consists of an electrochromic display and a solar cell in a single nanocrystalline film. The optimization of the electrochromic and the solar cell functions was carried out. An applied potential of 1.0 V was required for coloring and the best solar energy conversion efficiency 1.1% was achieved. The efficiency may be compared to an efficiency of 4.6% obtained in a similar dye-sensitized solar cell without the display property. Coloring and bleaching times of the device were less than one second and a transmittance change from 38.7% (bleached) to 15.9% (colored) at best was achieved. The optimization of the electrochromic property of the device lead to decreasing efficiency of the solar cell and vice versa.  相似文献

A mechanical device for monitoring the diel activity pattern of small burrowing mammals under natural conditions is described. The device has been used to estimate the time spent by the Indian gerbil, Tatera indica indica Hardwicke in foraging above ground and in an underground nest which is a part of the device. Activity patterns recorded with this device have confirmed observations that Tatera i, indica is nocturnal. The average time spent by this rodent outside the nest during an eight day study period was 318 min/24h. These rodents are generally active between 1900–0300 hrs, apparently with two peaks of activity, one between 2100–2200 hrs and the other between 0100–0200 hrs.  相似文献

Cognitive enrichment aims to provide animals with opportunities to use their cognitive skills and to promote behaviors associated with positive wellbeing. Cooperation in mammals has been recorded during various behavioral contexts such as hunting, mating, playing, and parental care. Coordinated activity, often with some level of problem-solving action included, is required during cooperation. To investigate dolphins’ ability for collaborative problem-solving, an enrichment device was introduced to two adult male Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus). The device contained fish and ice and was designed to be opened by simultaneously pulling on both ends. After repeated presentation, it became apparent that only one dolphin had active interest in the device. To facilitate opportunities for problem-solving by this individual, an alternative collaborator, a human partner, was provided. Still, both dolphins had access to the device throughout the entire experiment. After the first opening, the same dolphin was highly successful in collaborating with the human in both joined (93%) and delayed (100%) partner conditions. The device provided a novel opportunity for the dolphin to use his cognitive skills. Even though only one dolphin participated actively, both dolphins showed varying degrees of interest to the device throughout the study. Both dolphins spent an average of 48% and 16% of their time, respectively, with the device, which resulted in a significant decrease in their other two most frequently observed behaviors: swimming and poolside observation. As a novel cognitive challenge, the device may be considered as a type of cognitive enrichment.  相似文献

A device for the rapid and accurate measurement of model molecular co-ordinates, to be used in conjunction with a Richards optical comparator, is described. The device may be operated in either a manual or automatic mode. The manual mode allows an operator to find the co-ordinates of a desired atom by optical superposition of the transmitted image of a small marker light upon the reflected image of the atom to be measured. The automatic mode allows the operator to position the marker light automatically by entering preselected co-ordinates from an electronic console. This mode of operation facilitates the rapid construction and comparison of structures the atomic co-ordinates of which are already known. The device utilizes pulsed stepping motors to position the marker light and incorporates modularized solid-state circuitry throughout. Several applications of the device are described.  相似文献

This paper describes the construction and performance of a simple pressure sensing device with a continuous electrical output. It was constructed utilizing a commercially available transducer, an electropneumatic sensor capsule and a 1 m long tube. The transducer used was a piezo-resistive pressure-sensitive device producing an output voltage proportional to the applied pressure. This low cost, high accuracy device is temperature compensated and shows good linearity and negligible hysteresis. The sensor cell has a good thickness-to-diameter ratio and is sufficiently flexible to conform to most contours of the body. The tubing that conveys the pressure transmitting fluid also serves as a means of keeping the transducer distant from the measuring site. The device showed a highly satisfactory performance under laboratory conditions and has proven to be robust and reliable when used for clinical studies.  相似文献

A microfluidic device has been designed, fabricated and tested for its ability to purify bacteriophage lambda DNA and bacterial chromosomal DNA, a necessary prerequisite for its incorporation into a biosensor. This device consists of a microfabricated channel in which silica-coated pillars were etched to increase the surface area within the channel by 300-600%, when the etch depth is varied from 20 to 50 microm. DNA was selectively bound to these pillars in the presence of the chaotropic salt guanidinium isothiocyanate, followed by washing with ethanol and elution with low-ionic strength buffer. Positive pressure was used to move solutions through the device, removing the need for centrifugation steps. The binding capacity for DNA in the device was approximately 82 ng/cm2 and on average, 10% of the bound DNA could be purified and recovered in the first 50 microl of elution buffer. Additionally, the device removed approximately 87% of the protein from a cell lysate. Nucleic acids recovered from the device were efficiently amplified by the polymerase chain reaction suggesting the utility of these components in an integrated, DNA amplification-based biosensor. The miniaturized format of this purification device, along with its excellent purification characteristics make it an ideal component for nucleic acid-based biosensors, especially those in which nucleic acid amplification is a critical step.  相似文献

A mathematical model was developed for an implantable force transducer to be inserted within the midsubstance of a ligament or tendon. The model was generated by performing both equilibrium and strain-displacement analyses on a metallic, curved beam structure placed within a parallel-fibered tissue. The analysis permitted the transverse pressure acting between the device and fibers to be calculated along with peak device strain and sensitivity (ratio of strain output to axial tissue force). Transducer pressure and transducer strain were expressed in terms of nondimensionalized design factors. A parametric analysis of the key design factors was then performed. The transverse pressure was shown to vary little for large changes in these factors whereas device strain changed markedly. The analysis was verified by a bench test on an example device. Such a model permits a proposed design to be evaluated without having to conduct costly experiments.  相似文献

Measuring the energy intake (kcal) of a person in day-to-day life is difficult. The best laboratory tool achieves 95?% accuracy on average, while tools used in daily living typically achieve 60-80?% accuracy. This paper describes a new method for measuring intake via automated tracking of wrist motion. Our method uses a watch-like device with a micro-electro-mechanical gyroscope to detect and record when an individual has taken a bite of food. Two tests of the accuracy of our device in counting bites found that our method has 94?% sensitivity in a controlled meal setting and 86?% sensitivity in an uncontrolled meal setting, with one false positive per every 5?bites in both settings. Preliminary data from daily living indicates that bites measured by the device are positively related to caloric intake illustrating the potential of the device to monitor energy intake. Future research should seek to further explore the relationship between bites taken and kilocalories consumed to validate the device as an automated measure of energy intake.  相似文献

This article deals with the euthanasia debate in light of new life‐sustaining technologies such as the left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The question arises: does the switching off of a LVAD by a doctor upon the request of a patient amount to active or passive euthanasia, i.e. to ‘killing’ or to ‘letting die’? The answer hinges on whether the device is to be regarded as a proper part of the patient's body or as something external. We usually regard the switching off of an internal device as killing, whereas the deactivation of an external device is seen as ‘letting die’. The case is notoriously difficult to decide for hybrid devices such as LVADs, which are partly inside and partly outside the patient's body. Additionally, on a methodological level, I will argue that the ‘ontological’ arguments from analogy given for both sides are problematic. Given the impasse facing the ontological arguments, complementary phenomenological arguments deserve closer inspection. In particular, we should consider whether phenomenologically the LVAD is perceived as a body part or as an external device. I will support the thesis that the deactivation of a LVAD is to be regarded as passive euthanasia if the device is not perceived by the patient as a part of the body proper.  相似文献

It also describes the current state-of-the-art developments in proteomic analysis including available technologies, current market issues, the elements of an envisaged proteomics-on-a-chip device, the required microfabrication processes and the integration of the elements into one device. Address-flow microfluidics is a tool for connecting separation and detection platforms. Vasculogenesis is an important morphogenetic event for vascular tissue engineering and ischemic disease treatment. Stem and progenitor cells can contribute to vasculogenesis via endothelial differentiation and direct participation in blood vessel formation. In this study, we developed an implantable microfluidic device to facilitate formation of three-dimensional (3D) vascular structures by human endothelial progenitor cells (hEPCs). The microfluidic device was made of biodegradable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) using a microchannel patterned silicon wafer made by soft lithography. A collagen type I (Col I) hydrogel containing hEPCs filled the microfluidic channels to reconstitute a 3D microenvironment for facilitating vascular structure formation by hEPCs. The device seeded with hEPCs was implanted into the subcutaneous space of athymic mice and retrieved one and four weeks after implantation. Histology and immunohistochemistry revealed that hEPCs formed a 3D capillary network expressing endothelial cell-specific proteins in the channel of the PLGA microfluidic device. This result indicates that a 3D microscale extracellular matrix reconstituted in the microchannel can promote the endothelial differentiation of hEPCs and in turn hEPC-mediated vasculogenesis. The PLGA microfluidic device reported herein may be useful as an implantable tissue-engineering scaffold for vascularized tissue reconstruction and therapeutic angiogenesis.  相似文献
