An atypical Bronze Age mandible from Żerniki Górne,Poland

The unusual anatomical features of a Bronze Age mandible are described. Of particular interest were the shelf-like ridges which were located approximately midway along the rami. These ridges probably formed the insertion areas for the masseter muscles. Of two possible explanations presented to account for the unusual morphological variations, the more likely is the congenital absence of the superficial portions of the masseter muscles. However, an alternative explanation is presented suggesting the presence of shortened superficial portions of the masseter muscle which could explain the contour of the shelf.     

Unusual Orofacial Manifestations of Histoplasmosis in Renal Transplanted Patient

Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection caused by the Histoplasma capsulatum. Mucosal manifestations are uncommon, but, when present, they are usually associated with pulmonary or chronic disseminated infection. The course of the disease is often related to the host immune response. The purpose of this article is to describe the clinical and microscopic findings of unusual involvement of nasal cartilage and septal destruction, and oral lesions of histoplasmosis in an immunosuppressed patient who presented an unusual form of the disease.     

Easy removal of a partially embedded ring from a finger.

An unusual case of a wedding band embedded under the skin of the ring finger is presented. A technique for removal of an embedded ring is described, which avoids additional trauma to the finger.     

Late-Onset Muscle Dystrophy: Oculopharyngoesophageal Variety

Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy is a localized or restricted variety of muscular dystrophy, characterized by bilateral ptosis, myopathic facies, external ophthalmoplegia and dysphagia. A patient with this unusual myopathy is described and detailed esophageal motility studies are presented that provide conclusive evidence of both striated and smooth muscle involvement.Because these unusual localized forms of muscular dystrophy exist and may be of late onset, previous rigid concepts concerning the dystrophies should be discarded.     

A remarkable new genus of stiletto flies from Egypt, with a key to Palaearctic genera of Phycinae (Diptera, Therevidae)

An unusual new genus (Salwaea burgensisgen. n., sp. n.) of phycine stiletto flies is described from Egypt. A key to Palaearctic genera of Phycinae is presented.     

Complications of intestinal intubation; with report of two cases of unusual complication

Many complications may arise from the use of intubation in treatment of intestinal obstruction. They are readily subject to classification and can be prevented by proper precautions. Two illustrative case reports of unusual complications are presented.     

Presymptomatic exclusion of myotonic dystrophy in a one-generation pedigree of half-siblings

An unusual one-generation family with myotonic dystrophy is presented, in which genetic counseling was successfully carried out. The probability of an informative result, before marker typing, is analytically derived and amounts to at least 40%.     

Corrigendum to “Lytic bone disease as the presenting feature of Philadelphia-positive,derivative chromosome 7 myelodysplasia progressing to acute myeloid leukaemia” [GENE 501 (2012) 219–221]

We describe an unusual case of Philadelphia-positive, derivative chromosome 7 myelodysplasia progressing to acute myeloid leukaemia in a 53 year old male who presented with bone-pain and B-symptoms and was found to have diffuse osteolytic lesions.

Cytasters from sea urchin eggs parthenogenetically activated by procaine

A method is presented for the isolation of cytasters from unfertilized sea urchin eggs parthenogenetically activated by procaine. These cytasters do not appear to contain centrioles. The microtubules seem to grow out from the condensed chromosomes. The chromosomes have an unusual morphology.     

Soft-tissue frontal bossing

An unusual case of frontal bossing due to excess subcutaneous fibroadipose tissue in a 38-year-old woman with M?bius syndrome is presented. A relatively simple transcoronal resection of soft tissue resulted in successful elimination of this type of frontal bossing.     

Unusual cases of the inheritance of Down's syndrome

Three unusual cases of Down's syndrome inheritance are presented which permit supposing that microstructural chromosome aberrations in parents may induce not only a structural imbalance of chromosomal material in progeny, but also a numerical imbalance.     

Scanning Electron Microscopic Studies of Candida albicans

A scanning electron microscopic study of selected morphological stages of Candida albicans is presented. Stages represented are budding yeast cells, mycelial-like forms, chlamydospores, germ tube formation, and an unusual rough cell type.     

Renal-cell carcinoma metastatic to the thyroid. Aspiration cytology and histologic findings

A case of renal-cell carcinoma metastatic to the thyroid eight years after the removal of the primary tumor is presented, with the aspiration cytologic and histologic findings described. This unusual presentation and the incidence and behavior of renal-cell carcinomas and tumors metastatic to the thyroid are discussed.     

Expansion and contraction of hypomelanotic areas in human piebaldism

Summary A case of human piebaldism with white forelock is presented, with emphasis on the unusual aspect of expansion and diminution of the hypomelanotic areas. Possible mechanisms of piebaldism and of changes in the hypomelanotic areas are discussed.     

Highly hydroxylated steroids of the starfish Archaster typicus from the Vietnamese waters

Five new steroidal compounds, including an unusual glucoside, along with several known steroids were isolated from the starfish Archaster typicus collected in shallow waters of Quang Ninh province (Vietnam). Three new compounds are 27-nor-cholestane derivatives and the other two are 24,26-dihydroxycholestane derivatives. A biogenesis pathway for the unusual side chain of 27-nor-cholestane derivatives is proposed. Isolated compounds presented moderate toxic effects in the sperm- and 8-blastomere tests on embryonal development of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotusintermedius.     

Ultrastructural features of budding cells in a prokaryote belonging to morphotype IV of theBlastocaulis-Planctomyces group

Budding cells of prokaryotes belonging to morphotype IV of theBlastocaulis-Planctomyces group showed several unusual ultrastructural features. Those presented in this preliminary survey pertain to the cell envelope, the nucleoplasm, the connecting channel between mother cell and bud, and an assortment of cellular inclusions.     

An unusual presentation of constriction band syndrome

Congenital constriction band syndrome is a rare entity with a wide spectrum of associated congenital anomalies. Review of the pathogenesis and an unusual case of constriction band syndrome in a newborn are presented. Surgical excision of the deformity and the band was performed within the first week of life. There were no vascular or neural structures within the excised tissue, and there were no other associated anomalies other than dextrocardia and an equinovarus deformity of the foot. The wound was closed primarily without the need for Z-plasties. This alternative method of treatment can be considered in such unusual locations of constriction band syndromes.     

Orbital cellulitis and blindness following a blepharoplasty

An unusual case of orbital cellulitis following blepharoplasty, with resultant blindness in that eye, is presented. The cause is unknown, but the pathogenesis and treatment of this rare complication are discussed. Unilateral severe headache may alert one to the possibility of this rare, but grave, complication.     

Acute liver failure: a rare clinical presentation of visceral leishmaniasis

We recently re-examined a case of Visceral Leishmaniasis, in a 36-year-old caucasian immune-competent men with an unusual clinical presentation. Together with symptoms and signs of a severe acute liver involvement, he presented weight loss, huge spleen enlargement, pancytopenia and increased ?-globulin serum level with a high polyclonal peak. He had no fever, but over-abundant night sweats were frequent. The patient was considered to have liver cirrhosis, and the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniosis was made with a year's delay. From this case report we may learn that, despite an unusual clinical presentation, the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis should not be excluded when other characteristic signs and symptoms and laboratory abnormalities are present.
