To test the influence of the largest Central Amazon fish consumption centre on the potential fish population recruitment, young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) abundances of matrinxã Brycon amazonicus (Spix and Agassiz, 1829), jaraquis Semaprochilodus insignis (Jardine and Schomburgk, 1841), S. taeniurus (Valenciennes, 1821) and tambaqui Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier, 1818) were estimated in two floodplain areas of the middle Solimões‐Amazon River – one near the city of Manaus and the other 500 km from Manaus – in the 2007–2008 flooding. Matrinxã presented the highest abundance among the four species, with 87.8% of captured individuals. The difference was significant in the representation of YOY matrinxãs between the two studied areas, with the input more significant in the last months of flooding in the area 500 km from Manaus. Jaraquis represented 12.1% of captures and showed no difference between areas. Tambaqui abundance was shown to be critical in both areas, with the capture of only 28 YOY (0.1%), and with no differences between the two floodplains. Matrinxã and jaraquis are more likely to present stabile stocks in the middle Solimões‐Amazon River; on the other hand, matrinxã requires attention due to differences in the YOY input between the two areas and in their low input in the Upper Amazon River, near Manaus. Based on the present work and on the landing history in Manaus, tambaqui is still considered as under strong overexploitation, showing some of the characteristics of overfishing recruitment in the middle Solimões‐Amazon.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships (LWR) were provided for three fish species from Cujubim Sustainable Development Reserve, drainages of the Jutaí River Basin, a tributary of the Solimões River, part of the Central Amazon Biodiversity Corridor, Amazonas, Region North of Brazil. Specimens were collected in March 2006 using gill nets with mesh sizes range between 2 and 18 cm. The LWRs for all species are provided by the first time, and two new maximum length are recorded.  相似文献

The genetic variability of four Colossoma macropomum broodstocks, three from fish farms in different regions and one from the natural environment in Brazil, was analyzed using microsatellite markers. The wild progeny (= 30) were caught in the Solimões–Amazonas River, at the varzea lakes; this location is used to mature the fish from larvae to juveniles. The three fish farms were selected according to the age of their lineages and broodstock availability: DNOCS (= 21) is located in the Ceará State, representing the oldest lineage of cultivated tambaqui in Brazil; Balbina (= 30) is located in the Amazonas State, representing the youngest stocks of tambaqui farmed in Brazil (approximately 15 years); and UFRPE (= 30) is located in the Pernambuco State and is considered to be a mixed stock formed from the DNOCS and Balbina lineages. The analysis of 13 microsatellite loci indicated the occurrence of a variability reduction in the farmed populations; the UFRPE stock was the population with the highest diversity level. Low values of molecular coancestry were found in these populations. Additionally, significant differences in the RST values among the populations were detected, as was the occurrence of genetic structure. The genetic loss found in these populations may have been influenced by the founder effect. Because no breeding programs were during the entire production period and no pedigree records were kept for these broodstocks, we suggest that a wild population might be used as an important genetic resource to increase the genetic diversity of renewal stock lineages.  相似文献

The genetic analysis of Brachyplatystoma platynemum individuals sampled from the lower Madeira River reinforces the existence of two structured populations in the Amazon Basin (Madeira and Amazon populations). However, the recapture of an individual from the Amazon population in the Solimões River, which was telemetry-tagged in the Madeira River after the damming, indicates that fish from the Amazon population move between the two river systems. This has not yet been observed, however, in the Madeira River population, which is currently divided and isolated in the lower and upper Madeira River by the construction of two dams.  相似文献

Piranhas have a reputation of being man‐eating fishes, notwithstanding the absence of well‐documented records of piranha attacks on human beings. Three sites in Suriname where piranha attacks on bathers have taken place are discussed. In two isolated villages on the Wayombo River, most victims were children. In one village, 30 piranha attacks occurred in a period of 12 years, bites were mostly on the feet, and injuries were relatively harmless. In the second village, attacks occurred in a period of 7 years, and injuries were more serious, including the loss of digits and large and deep wounds in legs, arms and trunk. Two victims were attacked by several piranhas simultaneously. At the third site, a recreation park on the Suriname River, most attacks involved a single bite on the feet and victims were able to walk back to the beach without being attacked by other piranhas. Piranha attacks on humans did not result in deaths. The recovery of a toe phalange (Wayombo River) and a piece of flesh including a nail (Suriname River) from the stomach of two piranhas identified the fish responsible for the attacks as Serrasalmus rhombeus. Attacks on humans by S. rhombeus were associated with high age 0+ piranha densities in the dry season, high human prey densities, commotion in the water by humans, and spillage of food, fish offal or blood in the water.  相似文献

Parameters of the length‐weight relationship (LWR) were calculated for five fish species from Amazon Basin. Samplings were carried out in ten lakes of the Solimões River floodplains during the four seasons of the hydrological cycle: rising water, high water, receding water, and low water, during two periods. The first period of eight years included samplings performed from 2001 to 2008 and the second sampling period of two years was from 2012 to 2013. Specimens were captured using gillnets (mesh sizes ranging from 30 to 120 mm between opposite knots) and standardized dimension of 20 m in length × 2 m in height. This study provides the LWR parameters for Acarichthys heckelii, Leporinus trifasciatus, Brycon amazonicus, Curimatella meyeri and Osteoglossum bicirrhosum.  相似文献

Synopsis A tentative set of growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation were estimated for the red-bellied piranha,Serrasalmus nattereri, a common characid of the Amazonas and adjacent floodplains, based on length-frequency data collected by R.H. Lowe-McConnell in Guyana. These parameters and related statistics are then used, along with published data from metabolic, field and feeding experiment data to estimate the relative food consumption of a population ofS. nattereri. This is complemented with biological data assembled from the scattered literature onS. nattereri to provide a snapshot of this species.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to report the presence of a three non‐native hybrid long‐whiskered catfishes (family Pimelodidae) in the Upper Paraná River basin, Brazil. Genetic analyses demonstrated that the three presumptive hybrids were a result of the crossbreeding of Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum (central Amazonas River basin and Lower Paraná River) and Leiarius marmoratus (Amazonas, Essequibo and Orinoco rivers), producing a hybrid commonly known in Brazil as cachandiá. The potential threat to biodiversity, due to possible genetic contamination, competition and predation of wild stocks, of such artificially produced hybrid fishes is discussed.  相似文献

Twenty nuclear microsatellite loci were isolated from a genomic DNA library derived from a free‐ranging red‐bellied brown lemur (Eulemur rubriventer), from the Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar. Population genetic parameters were estimated as baseline values from samples collected from populations harboured in the Ranomafana and Andringitra National Parks. The marker suite will be used in a future study on the population dynamics of this species.  相似文献

Ten polymorphic microsatellites were isolated from the red‐bellied yellow tail fusilier Caesio cuning, a reef‐associated fish which occurs widely in the Indo‐Pacific region. The species is exploited by both small‐scale and commercial fisheries. Fifty individuals from six populations were genotyped using primers that reliably amplified 10 polymorphic loci. The number of alleles per locus ranged from three to 11. Observed heterozygosity (HO) and expected heterozygosity (HE) ranged between 0.400 to 0.880 and 0.337 to 0.843, respectively. These microsatellite loci may be used to study population structure, genetic diversity and connectivity of C. cuning in the range of its distribution.  相似文献

In another paper (SCHMIDT, 1969b) the relations between the numbers of bacteria and phytoplankton in the surface layers of some waters near Manaus (Amazonas) were reported. As a stratification of phytoplankton is not possible, due to the strong turbulence in the Rio Solimões (Amazon River), and since current was also present in the Rio Negro off the bays and littoral regions, the vertical distribution of bacteria and algae was of special interest in the Lago do Castanho, the third of the waterbodies investigated in the paper mentioned above. In the present study, two important fractions of bacteria, their total number, and the fraction of saprophyta (estimated by the number of bacterial colonies), were also differentiated.  相似文献

Triplophysa orientalis (Herzenstein) is one of the Nemacheilinae (Cypriniformes: Balitoridae) fish species distributed in the Tibetan Plateau area. In order to understand the impact of plateau uplift on population history and the isolation effect of plateau lakes on T. orientalis, we examined its genetic structure and phylogenetic relationships. A total of 98 individuals from five wild populations, three from plateau lakes and two from branch rivers in upper reaches of the Yangtze River, in the eastern peripheral of the Tibetan Plateau were sampled. An 848 base pair fragment from the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region was sequenced for analyses. Overall, very high intra-population genetic variability was found in all populations except for one lake population (Rannicuo); nucleotide diversity ranged from 0.0025 to 0.0159 and haplotype diversity ranged from 0.641 to 0.879. Furthermore, the genetic distance between river populations (0.0326) was much higher than that among lake populations (Rannicuo and Barencuo 0.0035, Bannicuo and Yibicuo 0.0038, Rannicuo and Yibicuo 0.0049). Additionally, the analysis of molecular variance demonstrated that most of the observed genetic variability occurred among populations, accompanied with significant Fst values except for that between the Yibicuo and Barencuo populations. This evidence suggested a strong population structure of the species and a lack of inter-population connection. Lastly, the rate of migration indicated there were large historic gene flows among lake populations. Demographic analysis also indicated there were bottlenecks or expansions in three lake populations, suggesting a potential isolation effect of plateau lakes on population differentiation. Molecular dating of intra-specific divergence showed the plateau uplift has shaped the genetic structure of T. orientalis.  相似文献

Identification of priority conservation areas is crucial for safeguarding freshwater ecosystems. Occurrence of unique populations and/or evolutionary significant units for key species is one of the most frequent reasons for protecting a region or location. In this study we have studied two of the most important fisheries resources of the Amazon basin, Curimata and Tambaqui, from different areas, in order to identify common zones of special diversity. Employing the Barcoding cytochrome oxidase I gene as a genetic tool, we have detected a clear differentiation of the populations inhabiting the Meeting of Waters and the rest of the basin for both species. This area corresponds to the confluence of the Solimões and the Negro rivers, of different physicochemical water characteristics, at the Brazilian city of Manaus in central Amazonas. The Meeting of Waters area (near Manaus) could be recommended as a potential area subject of special management, given its apparent role as a shelter for evolutionary significant units.  相似文献

Pronounced seasonal and daily oxygen concentration changes are characteristic for Amazonian floodplain lakes. Studies on the fish fauna of the Lago Camaleão, Solimões River, Amazonas, Brazil, showed several fish species which are able to survive prolonged periods of heavy hypoxia. Twenty species belonging to eight families were observed in the laboratory in order to determine their respiratory adaptations to hypoxic conditions and oxygen concentrations at which the fish present respiratory adaptations. Finally, the fish species were distributed throughout the habitats of Lake Camaleão according to their adaptation responses. Ten fish species used the surface water for aquatic surface respiration, four species used atmospheric oxygen for aerial respiration, four species used oxygen supplied by the exudation of the roots of floating macrophytes and two exhibited a high tolerance to hypoxic conditions, and well-developed physiological biochemical mechanisms. The fish fauna is well adapted to low oxygen concentrations. The large variety of morpho-anatomical adaptations associated with biochemical and physiological mechanisms to tolerate hypoxic and anoxic conditions enable the 20 fish species to exploit several habitats of Lago Camaleão, such as floating aquatic macrophyte meadows, open water and near the shoreline.  相似文献

Between‐individual variation in phenotypes within a population is the basis of evolution. However, evolutionary and behavioural ecologists have mainly focused on estimating between‐individual variance in mean trait and neglected variation in within‐individual variance, or predictability of a trait. In fact, an important assumption of mixed‐effects models used to estimate between‐individual variance in mean traits is that within‐individual residual variance (predictability) is identical across individuals. Individual heterogeneity in the predictability of behaviours is a potentially important effect but rarely estimated and accounted for. We used 11 389 measures of docility behaviour from 1576 yellow‐bellied marmots (Marmota flaviventris) to estimate between‐individual variation in both mean docility and its predictability. We then implemented a double hierarchical animal model to decompose the variances of both mean trait and predictability into their environmental and genetic components. We found that individuals differed both in their docility and in their predictability of docility with a negative phenotypic covariance. We also found significant genetic variance for both mean docility and its predictability but no genetic covariance between the two. This analysis is one of the first to estimate the genetic basis of both mean trait and within‐individual variance in a wild population. Our results indicate that equal within‐individual variance should not be assumed. We demonstrate the evolutionary importance of the variation in the predictability of docility and illustrate potential bias in models ignoring variation in predictability. We conclude that the variability in the predictability of a trait should not be ignored, and present a coherent approach for its quantification.  相似文献

A new nematode species, Philometra nattereri n. sp. (Philometridae), is described from female specimens found in the oculo-orbits and nasal cavity of the red piranha Pygocentrus nattereri Kner (Characiformes: Characidae) from five lakes in Central Amazonia, Brazil, collected in 2008 and 2009 (overall prevalence 12%, intensity 1?C3 nematodes per fish). Based on light and scanning electron microscopical examination, the new species differs from most other congeners parasitising freshwater fishes in that its oesophageal gland extends anteriorly far anterior to the level of the nerve-ring, in the presence of 14 small cephalic papillae arranged in two circles and in having two minute caudal projections. This is the first species of Philometra Costa, 1845 reported from fishes of the family Characidae and the second valid species of this genus parasitic in freshwater fishes of Brazil and South America.  相似文献

The black-faced black spider monkey (Ateles chamek) is endangered because of hunting and habitat loss. There are many gaps in our understanding of its geographic distribution. The Ucayali–Solimões–Amazon fluvial complex is currently recognized as the northern boundary of the species’ range, although published reports have indicated that it occurs north of the Rio Solimões. In this study we investigate published records, generate new field records, and assess the current information concerning the northern boundary of this species’ range. We conducted the study at the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve in the central Brazilian Amazon, an area of 1,124,000 ha that consists entirely of Amazonian flooded forest (várzea). We collected data on the occurrence of the species from museum specimens and through field surveys, including interviews with local residents, direct observations, and the collection of new museum specimens. We confirmed the presence of A. chamek at 17 locations in the reserve, one of which was an island formed by a river bend cut-off that would have effectively taken any resident spider to the (new) north bank of the Solimões. We therefore conclude that fluvial dynamics were involved in creating the conditions for the dispersal and colonization of the species on the northern bank of the Rio Solimões. The data we present extends the known distribution of the species and increases its representation in protected areas.  相似文献

Synopsis The otoliths of an adult red-bellied piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri, captured from a reservoir in Hawaii were scrutinized to determine the fish's origin and growth history. Sagittal otoliths of the piranha, P. nattereri, contained internal microincrements visible by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The medial cross sectional plane of the sagitta was resolved to provide counts for the most visible micro-increments. An opportune spawning of confiscated adults provided samples for verification of daily increment formation. Daily formation of microincrements was verified from hatched individuals, and confirmed the suitability of otoliths for revealing daily patterns in the age and growth of piranhas. The central area of the sagitta was diffuse in regards to otolith microstructure and indicated the fish was held in an unchanging environment (aquarium). Therefore, otoliths provide important life history or forensic information incorporated within their structural components. The visualization of daily microincrements in the otolith of a juvenile allowed the determination of age at and since release. Fish grew rapidly after being released into the wild. From otolith increments the date of release for an individual fish can be calculated with acceptable accuracy. As presented, otolith structural information can provide age and growth data which are essential to the management of introduced species.  相似文献

The delimitation of the Serrasalmus species (Characiformes, Serrasalminae) from the Bolivian Amazon (Amazonas, Madeira) was examined using intron length polymorphism assessed by EPIC-PCR. The six pairs of primers provided 16 polymorphic loci across the species of the region and the allelic diversity ranged between two and 10 alleles per locus. For each locus, the lack of departure from Hardy-Weinberg expectations in a large number of the populations analysed and the homogenous distribution of linkage disequilibrium between paralogous loci and loci belonging to different intronic systems provided strong lines of evidence that the 16 amplified loci constituted independent neutral markers. Furthermore, allelic diversity was size-dependent, thereby indicating that insertion-deletions occurred frequently but randomly in introns, and that intron length polymorphism was a valid marker for investigating the systematics of piranhas. EPIC-PCR demonstrated that eight of the nine nominal species of piranha of the Upper Madeira were reproductively isolated and identified a new species that differed from its closest morphological and genetic relatives by seven diagnostic or semi-diagnostic loci. By contrast, no diagnostic or semi-diagnostic locus was found between S. spilopleura and S. eigenmanni , nor were their allelic frequencies different, thereby questioning the validity of their biological species status, at least in the Upper Madeira. This study, which was one of the first applications of EPIC-PCR to a large-scale molecular systematic purpose, demonstrates that it is a rapid, reliable and cost-effective tool for elucidating issues pertaining to fish systematics.  相似文献
