In the nurse plant syndrome, or nurse association, seedlings (beneficiaries) are associated with adult shrubs/trees (benefactors). This phenomenon has been documented in several regions of the planet. Abiotic stress amelioration (one mechanism of facilitation) is one of the causes of this association. Most of the studies addressing the nurse syndrome have been conducted on spatial scales of a few hectares and have focused on only one or a few species. Moreover, there is an almost complete lack of studies addressing the incidence and characteristics of the nurse phenomenon in the arid Andes of South America. We undertook a first approximation to the study of facilitation in these ecosystems. The study was conducted at local and regional scales and involved the assessment of the spatial distribution of juveniles (seedlings and saplings) of 51 populations of 16 shrub and 12 cactus species in relation to shrub cover at 20 localities of the Prepuna (subtropical Andes of Bolivia and Argentina, 20–26°S). In terms of spatial distribution, the juveniles of most of the populations of shrubs studied were distributed both under the shrubs and in open spaces, thereby showing an apparent indifference to microhabitat. Globose and opuntioid cacti were preferentially distributed below the canopies of shrubs and were usually more associated with the dominant shrub species, which stood out as better potential nurses. The pattern was consistent throughout the region, including the more mesic and arid localities. The fact that Prepuna woody species are capable of establishing in open spaces would confer this region a greater resilience. Our findings further suggest that community dynamics in arid and semi-arid environments are more variable than previously thought.  相似文献

Cinder cones in Craters of the Moon National Monument in southcentral Idaho, USA were formed over 2200 yr B.P., but are still covered by large, relatively barren areas containing a sparse assemblage of plants. The spatial associations among 6 plant species on these sparsely vegetated areas were examined. All species were positively associated with the canopy region of Eriogonum ovalifolium var. depressum, an initial colonizer. All species were negatively associated with Pinus flexilis, a later-successional species. We examined soil seed densities and N and P levels under canopies of the 6 species to develop testable explanations for positive plant associations with E. ovalifolium. Soil seed densities of Phacelia hastata and Lewisia rediviva were higher under canopies of E. ovalifolium than under 4 of the 5 other species and bare areas. Soil total N under E. ovalifolium canopies was also higher than under 4 of the 5 other species and bare areas. Soil seed densities and N levels were similar under E. ovalifolium and Eriogonum umbellatum, both of which had dense, prostrate canopies. Soil available P levels under E. ovalifolium were not significantly different than under other species or bare ground. The positive associations of all species with E. ovalifolium is likely the result of seed-trapping by its prostrate canopy and more favorable establishment conditions under its canopy. The relative importance of these potential mechanisms can be tested with field experiments.Abbreviations EROV = Eriogonum ovalifolium var. depressum - ERUM = Eriogonum umbellatum - PHHA = Phacelia hastata - PIFL = Pinus flexilis - SIHY = Sitanion hystrix - STTH = Stipa thurberiana  相似文献

The paper ‘Bird diversity in the savanna habitats of Akagera National Park, Rwanda, in the post-war recovery period’ by Gatali and Wallin (Ostrich 86(3): 267–276, 2015) makes several claims for new species records for Akagera National Park and Rwanda. We found that Gatali and Wallin recorded several species considered very rare in Rwanda and new discoveries; these findings often contradicted the existing literature. We doubt the validity of 34 species records and we aim to demonstrate that these claims are mostly the result of misidentification or human error and consider that future researchers should use their findings with caution. Some findings around more common species may be validated through further studies and we encourage others to conduct fieldwork in Akagera National Park.  相似文献

Agriophyllum squarrosum Moq. is a dominant annual on sand dunes in the arid regions of central Asia. A high percentage of seeds is retained on dead plants which become covered by moving sand, but little is known about the ecological significance of burial of canopy-stored seeds. We investigated the size and dynamics of the buried canopy-stored seed bank and effects of burial on seed germination. In March (during the windy season), May (beginning of the germination season), and July (middle of the growing season), the number of seeds per square meter in sample plots in the dunes was 623, 223 and 22, respectively, with 54.6, 30.6 and 12.9% of the total seeds retained on buried plant canopies. In a controlled experiment, more seedlings emerged from released (dispersed) than from canopy-stored seeds when burial depth was the same. No viable ungerminated released seeds were found, but 45–80% of the ungerminated canopy-stored seeds were viable. In general, with an increase in applied water germination of released seeds buried at a depth of 1 or 2 cm and of canopy-stored seeds buried at 1 cm increased, but regardless of watering regime few or no released seeds at 4 cm or canopy-stored seeds at 2 or 4 cm germinated. Significantly more seedlings emerged from plants buried in a horizontal than in a vertical position. Seedlings originating from buried canopy-stored seeds on an active dune accounted for only 5.4% of the total seedlings emerging, and most of them emerged later than those from released seeds. Thus, seed release is more effectively postponed in buried than in exposed canopies, and burial of canopy-stored seeds is a mechanism that helps regulate seed germination and seedling emergence of A. squarrosum on active dunes.  相似文献

The three species of Uebelmannia (Cactaceae: Cactoideae; endemic to Minas Cerais, Brazil) are noteworthy for their tough, bumpy stem surface and the presence of conspicuous mucilage cavities restricted to the outer part of the stems. The anatomy of the mature structures and their ontogeny was investigated from microtome sections. The uncommon surface relief is caused by groups of unequally elongated hypodermis cells. The mucilage cavities consist of solitary and considerably enlarged mucilage cells (U.buiningii and U. pectinifera). In U.gummifera groups of mucilage cells disintegrate and form large cavities which are finally united into longitudinal ducts. A comparison of these stem features with species of the superficially similar genera Islaya and Wigginsia (representing tribe Notocacteae), does not indicate a close phylogenetic relationship between Uebelmannia and members of tribe Notocacteae. Finally, some short comments touch on the adaptational aspect of the characteristic stem features of Uebelmannia.  相似文献

A citizen science initiative was launched in the province of Trieste, aimed at mapping the distribution of Ailanthus altissima, Ambrosia artemisiifolia and Senecio inaequidens. The reliability of citizen data was tested against control data obtained by trained personnel with a stratified random sampling. In spite of the lack of a strict sampling strategy, citizen data were highly correlated with control data. This was mainly due to: 1) the easy identification of the species and 2) the instructions given to citizens for selecting their observation areas and for avoiding duplicate records. The three species tend to be most frequent in disturbed areas; Ailanthus is highly concentrated in the urban area, Senecio is widely distributed but avoids the city centre, with the highest frequency in the industrial area and along the railways, Ambrosia has a similar pattern, but is most frequent in areas with calcareous substrata. The interpretation of the distribution patterns in terms of land use and ecological factors proved to be quite easy when the three species are considered together (higher frequency in disturbed areas), less so when they are considered separately, most probably because of historical and sociological factors, such as incomplete migration into the survey area, and “gentrification effects”.  相似文献

Papaver fauriei is an endemic and endangered species that grows only on the gravelly alpine slopes of Mt. Rishiri, Japan. Cultivated poppy (Papaver sp.), the species name of which is unknown, has been introduced to the natural habitats of P. fauriei through human activities. Because the appearance and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of these two poppies are highly similar, it is of concern that they could produce hybrids in their natural habitats. Thus, first, the ability of these two poppies to produce hybrids was analyzed by artificial fertilization in this study. A large number of seeds were produced by reciprocal crosses between P. fauriei and the cultivated poppy, comparable with the number of seeds obtained by self‐ or cross‐fertilization of P. fauriei or the cultivated poppy. In addition, high germination was observed for seeds obtained from crosses between the two poppies, and deleterious phenotypes, such as albinism and dwarfism, were not detected in the F1 generation. These results indicate that after pollination, there is no reproductive isolation between the two poppies. Second, we sequenced the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of 240 poppy individuals collected from the gravelly alpine slopes of Mt. Rishiri, and 66 showed the sequence of P. fauriei, whereas 174 showed the sequence of the cultivated poppy. However, the ITS sequence that confirms hybridism between the two poppies was not detected in these individuals, indicating that hybridization of P. fauriei and the cultivated poppy rarely occurs under natural conditions. Unknown mechanism(s) appear to prevent cross‐pollination between the two poppies.  相似文献

We present the results of a study that is the first to investigate the landscape-scale distribution of small mammals in direct relation to the spatial and temporal variation of snow cover. We investigated the distribution of the dusky antechinus Antechinus swainsonii and bush rat Rattus fuscipes in the subalpine zone of Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains of south-eastern Australia. A new hair tube technique was used to detect the presence of small mammals active in the subnivean space. In 2002, we sampled 72 sites stratified by elevation (1501–1600, 1601–1700, 1701–1800 m), aspect (accumulating, ablating) and habitat type (woodland, wet heath, dry heath, grassland). These factors were considered important in influencing snow accumulation and generally reflected the types of habitats available to small mammals. In 2003, the presence of small mammals was investigated at 30 high-elevation sites including six boulderfields. The development of the subnivean space in the Snowy Mountains is dependent on the presence of structures such as shrubs, boulders and microtopographic features that are capable of supporting a snow layer above ground level. When snow was present, small mammal detections were negatively correlated with snow depth and duration, and positively correlated with the complexity of structures and microtopography. At high elevations detections were largely confined to boulderfields, and at mid and low elevations small mammals were detected primarily in habitats where the subnivean space was most extensive. Antechinus swainsonii and R. fuscipes responded differently to snow cover, with the latter seeming better able to overwinter where snow cover was shallow and patchy, in contrast to A. swainsonii whose occurrence was correlated to the size of the subnivean space.  相似文献

Ascorbic acid (AA) is an important factor of defence against oxidative stress. AA is maintained in the reduced functional form by glutathione (GSH)-dependent dehydroascorbate (DHA) reducing enzymes, including the cytosolic glutaredoxin, the microsomal protein disulphide isomerase, and a DHA reductase of 31 kDa, hereafter referred to as DHAR, purified from rat liver cytosol and human red cells. As these mechanisms have rarely been studied in parasites, we looked for the possible presence of this 31 kDa protein in Trichinella spiralis L(1) larvae. Biochemical data, immunoblot analysis and immunohistochemical studies suggested the absence of this protein within parasites at this stage. However, they possess a low DHA reducing ability, which is probably due to the presence of glutaredoxin. On the other hand, immunohistochemical studies performed in histological sections of muscle tissue from Trichinella-infected animals showed an increase in DHAR in the nurse cell (NC) of T. spiralis- and Trichinella britovi-infected animals, compared with the surrounding muscle fibres. This result was confirmed by immunoblot analysis, whereas no such increase was observed in Trichinella pseudospiralis-infected animals. In the modified skeletal muscle cell also haeme oxygenase 1 increased, as well as lipoperoxidised proteins. Both findings suggest an oxidative stress of the NC, which might be related to the intense inflammatory reaction which surrounds the NC-parasite complex. Another possibility to explain the increase in DHAR could be that the NC needs to recycle a substantial amount of AA to synthesise the collagen capsule.  相似文献

The relative importance of natural and anthropogenic factors, especially topographic type, riparian canopy, altitude, temperature and bank protection, on larval chironomid assemblage was investigated in a Japanese basin. To focus on the macro-scale factors, a concrete block, as an artificial substrate, was used for chironomid collection so that sampling regime may be identical among the sites. Partial CCA using sampling month as a covariable revealed that topographic type, riparian canopy coverage, water temperature and altitude were the main factors influencing species distribution. Stempellinella tamaseptima, Polypedilum tamanigrum and five Rheotanytarsus species showed positive, whereas five Cricotopus species showed negative associations with canopy coverage. Some traditional longitudinal zonations of species were still shown. Chironomus flaviplumus and Chironomus yoshimatsui were merely associated with lower reaches. Stepwise multiple regressions of the assemblage indices on the environmental variables were applied. Bank protection and depth showed negative correlations with Shannon diversity H′. Both topographic type and depth showed negative correlations with Pielou equitability J. Topographic type (lower reach) and specific conductance showed positive, while bank protection showed a negative correlation with abundance. Species richness was not explained by any variables. As a whole, topographic type was the most directly related factor to chironomid assemblages.  相似文献

Genetic diversity of crop plants resulting from breeding and selection is preserved in gene banks. Utilization of such materials for further crop improvement depends on knowledge of agronomic performance and useful traits, which is usually obtained by phenotypic evaluation. Associations between DNA markers and agronomic characters in collections of crop plants would (i) allow assessment of the genetic potential of specific genotypes prior to phenotypic evaluation, (ii) identify superior trait alleles in germplasm collections, (iii) facilitate high resolution QTL mapping and (iv) validate candidate genes responsible for quantitative agronomic characters. The feasibility of association mapping was tested in a gene bank collection of 600 potato cultivars bred between 1850 and 1990 in different countries. The cultivars were genotyped with five DNA markers linked to previously mapped QTL for resistance to late blight and plant maturity. Specific DNA fragments were tested for association with these quantitative characters based on passport evaluation data. Highly significant association with QTL for resistance to late blight and plant maturity was detected with PCR markers specific for R1, a major gene for resistance to late blight, and anonymous PCR markers flanking the R1 locus at 0.2 Centimorgan genetic distance. The marker alleles associated with increased resistance and later plant maturity were traced to an introgression from the wild species S. demissum. These DNA markers are the first marker that are diagnostic for quantitative agronomic characters in a large collection of cultivars.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and toxin gene diversity of Bacillus thuringiensis/B. cereus in the phyllosphere of broad-leaved dock (Rumex obtusifolius) at a small spatial scale. B. thuringiensis/cereus populations were isolated from the phyllosphere of dock and neighbouring grass and in neighbouring soil using commercially available selective media which avoided the disadvantageous heat-shock selection procedure. The maximum density of B. thuringiensis/cereus in the dock phyllosphere was 1.9 x 10(4) CFU g(-1) but the between-leaf variation in numbers was found to follow a lognormal distribution. B. thuringiensis/cereus was also found at significant densities in soil and the phyllosphere of grass adjacent to the dock plants. PCR screening indicated that genes encoding cry1 toxin were present in the plasmids of 36.9% of B. thuringiensis/cereus isolates tested, 11.9% contained cry2, and none of the dock leaf isolates tested contained cry3, cry4, cry7 or cry8 genes. The diversity of cry genes is similar to that found from other studies focused on other parts of the world. This work is the first concerning the prevalence of B. thuringiensis/cereus on leaves in the UK, finding population sizes of previously unrecorded levels and a greater relative proportion of B. thuringiensis. We have also illustrated that before any ecological function can be investigated, suitable sampling scales need to be considered -- here we have shown that the minimum sampling unit should be individual leaves, to account for the log-normal distribution.  相似文献

A new genus and species of scorpion belonging to the family Pseudochactidaeare described based on four specimens collected in the Tien Son cave at the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Quang Binh Province, Vietnam. The new species represents a true troglobitic element, the first one known for the family Pseudochactidae. This represents the third known record of a pseudochactid, and the first from Vietnam.  相似文献

Gymnocypris przewalskii (Kessler 1876) is an endangered and state-protected rare fish species in Qinghai Lake, China. To further understand the life history and distribution of this fish, five surveys were carried out in Qinghai Lake between 2002–2006. Results of these surveys indicate that fishes were predominantly distributed about 2 m under the surface. In July, significant differences in fish density were found between surface and bottom layers (P = 0.001), and/or between middle and bottom layers (P = 0.025). Fish density was the greatest in the surface layer. In August and October, no significant differences were found between the different layers, but the bottom layer had a greater fish density. Furthermore, there were very large differences among different zones in fish distribution density. Differences in horizontal distribution were not significantly correlated to factors such as water depth and inshore distance, possibly because of very low and uniform fish density. Feeding, changes in water temperature, over-wintering and spawning appeared to influence fish distribution. Hydroacoustic estimates of G. przewalskii biomass in Qinghai Lake increased significantly between 2002 and 2006. We attribute this increase to the management measures put in place to protect this species.  相似文献

Beach communities of eastern North America are commonly dominated by the native perennial grass Ammophila breviligulata. It typically co-occurs with a variety of annual grasses and herbs in the pioneer zone. To determine the potential significance of this vigorous clonal species to the annual community, density, spatial distribution, seed production and potential seed rain were quantified for three focus species (Triplasis purpurea, Cenchrus tribuloides, and Heterotheca subaxillaris) in a 45×40 m section of coastal beach on Staten Island, New York, USA. During autumn 2000, five 40 m transects (10 m apart) were established perpendicular to shore; ramet density for Ammophila, and densities and per capita seed production for the three species, were estimated in 150 contiguous quadrats (35 cm × 30 cm) per transect. Both Triplasis and Cenchrus were more likely to occur in quadrats without Ammophila. Per capita seed production of Cenchrus and Heterotheca showed a curvilinear decrease with increasing numbers of Ammophila ramets. Mean seed rain per m2 was significantly reduced in the presence of Ammophila for all three focus annuals. In this beach community, Ammophila acts as an ecosystem engineer, but has a mostly negative influence on the distribution, density, and reproduction of the co-occurring annuals. Results suggest that continual, deliberate planting of A. breviligulata could be detrimental to the abundance and diversity of native annual herbs on the eastern coasts of North America.  相似文献

As was shown in a recent paper [Klump, H. & Hütig, H. (1980) Ber. Bunsenges. Phys. Chem. 84, 250-253] by one of the authors (H.K.), nucleosome-like histone complexes can be formed on ribopolynucleotides as well as on deoxyribopolynucleotides. The conditions used for complex formation have to be such that single strands and triple strands as secondary structures of the polynucleotides employed are excluded under all ionic-strength conditions. There is clear evidence however for ordered poly(U)/histone complexes. In this paper we further characterize these poly(U) complexes and present electron micrographs of both DNA histone complexes and poly(U) histone complexes to show their close resemblance.  相似文献

Background

A significant portion (about 8% in the human genome) of mammalian mRNA sequences contains AU (Adenine and Uracil) rich elements or AREs at their 3' untranslated regions (UTR). These mRNA sequences are usually stable. However, an increasing number of observations have been made of unstable species, possibly depending on certain elements such as Alu repeats. ARE motifs are repeats of the tetramer AUUU and a monomer A at the end of the repeats ((AUUU)nA). The importance of AREs in biology is that they make certain mRNA unstable. Proto-oncogene, such as c-fos, c-myc, and c-jun in humans, are associated with AREs. Although it has been known that the increased number of ARE motifs caused the decrease of the half-life of mRNA containing ARE repeats, the exact mechanism is as of yet unknown. We analyzed the occurrences of AREs and Alu and propose a possible mechanism for how human mRNA could acquire and keep AREs at its 3' UTR originating from Alu repeats.  相似文献
