Temperature dependencies were established for the egg-to-mummy and mummy-to-adult phases, for mummy mortality, and for parasitism of Aphidius ervi Haliday, Aphidius rhopalosiphi De Stefani-Perez, and Praon volucre (Haliday) (Hymenoptera, Aphidiidae), three parasitoids of Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Homoptera, Aphididae), at 8°C, 12°C, 16°C, 20°C, and 25°C on winter wheat (cv. Haven). A physiological model described temperature-dependent development over the full temperature range, whereas a linear model was fitted for data above 8°C and used to estimate the lower temperature thresholds and day-degrees (° D) required for development. The thresholds for A. ervi were 2.2°C for egg-mummy development and 6.6°C for mummy-adult development, those for A. rhopalosiphi were 4.5°C and 7.2°C, and those for P. volucre were 3.8°C and 5.5°C. The time to develop into mummies and adults differed significantly between the three species: A. ervi development into mummies required an average of 159 ° D, while development into adults took an average of 73 ° D. The corresponding average times required for A. rhopalosiphi and P. volucre to develop mummies were 124° D and 126° D, while their development into adults required an average of 70° D and 150° D, respectively. Mummy mortality was 25–35% at 8°C and less at the higher temperatures tested, but began to increase again at 25°C, showing a quadratic relationship between mortality and temperature. Parasitization was very low or, in the case of P. volucre, absent up to 12°C and thereafter increased with increasing temperature. The relationship between parasitization, recorded as percent aphids mummified, and temperature was linear at the temperatures tested and depended on species. A. ervisuperparasitized 11.1% aphids at 20°C and 16.6% aphids at 25°C, whereas superparasitism was low in A. rhopalosiphi and absent in P. volucre. From 16°C to 25°C the P. volucre sex ratio increased. For A. ervi and A. rhopalosiphi there was no trend with temperature, but at 20°C and 25°C it was close to even. Field data for 1996 and 1997 allowed for a comparison of actual and expected emergence of overwintering mummies. In both years, parasitoids were predicted to have emerged from overwintering mummies well in advance of the onset of aphid infestation, and more than a month earlier than the first parasitized aphids were found in winter wheat. Observations from trap plants in other crops supported the predictions of the models. Other factors that can affect biological control by cereal aphid parasitoids are discussed.  相似文献

In laboratory studies, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lep. Noctuidae) from Burkina Faso exhibited pupal dormancy induced by high temperatures. Exposure to 37 °C from the 3rd larval stage caused 94.7% of males to diapause but only 60.9% of females. No influence of daylength (12 and 16 h) was observed. Induction by high temperatures must begin during the larval stage to be effective. The pupal stage is not sensitive to induction. After storage at 37 °C for 60 days, 64.3% of dormant pupae survived and most of them resulted in adult emergence. After storage at 37 °C for 85 days, no dormant pupae survived. The development of dormant pupae is resumed after about 20 days at 21 °C whatever the duration of prior exposure to 37 °C (7, 14 or 30 days). There is no delay in non-dormant pupae kept at 21 °C. The possible role of this hot thermal diapause in the life history of H. armigera in Burkina Faso is discussed.  相似文献

Summary The effect of the dnaN mutation on the growth of single-stranded DNA phages was studied by burst experiments. In HC138 dnaN cells exposed to 42.5° C at 5 min before infection, growth of spherical (microvirid or isometric) phages such as 3, Kh-1 and X174 was partially reduced at the nonpermissive temperature. When infection was performed at 30 min after temperature shift-up, viral replication was completely inhibited at 42.5° C in the dnaN strain but not in a dna + revertant. At 41° C, multiplication of filamentous (inovirid) phages M13 and fd was restricted specifically in HC138 F+ dnaN bacteria. When dnaN cells lysogenic for i21 were grown at 42.5° C for 60 min and then shifted down to 33° C, a burst of i21 occurred with concomitant cellular lysis, manifesting induction of the prophage development.  相似文献

Summary The dendritic outer segment of the cell which is most likely the cold unit in the poreless coeloconic sensilla onLocusta migratoria antennae, has finger-like projections up to 1.5 m long and 0.13 m thick (Fig. 1). This unit responds to constant temperature, to slowly changing temperature and to step changes. Under stationary conditions impulse frequency attained 35 imp/s. Between 14 °C and 41 °C the higher frequencies were associated with the higher temperatures (Fig. 5). In this range the differential sensitivity is positive but not large: + 0.8 (imp/s)/°C. Its resolving power for steady temperature is 4.7 °C.Downward step changes produced by shifting between airstreams at different temperatures yield far higher frequencies (Figs. 2, 3). Step amplitudes were between –0.1 °C and –12 °C; the conditioning temperature from which the steps were initiated, was between 16 °C and 33 °C. Frequency peaked during the first 50 ms after stimulus onset (Fig. 2) and reached its highest values (310–340 imp/s) at initial temperatures above 30 °C and steps larger than –10 °C (Fig. 4). The mean differential sensitivity from 23 curves was –19 (imp/s)/°C and the resolving power 0.6 °C.During slowly changing temperature the impulse frequency was governed by two parameters simultaneously: ambient temperature and its rate of change. Rates were between 0.001 °C/s or less, and 0.03 °C/s in either direction. Frequency was higher during slow cooling at a given temperature than during slow warming (Fig. 6). The average differential sensitivity to the rate of change was –210 (imp/s)/(°C/s). Further, the larger responses to cooling developed at lower ambient temperatures (differential sensitivity: –1.0 (imp/s)/°C). It is to be noted that this sign is negative, in contrast to the sign for differential sensitivity to constant temperature and also for the influence of initial temperature on the response to downward step changes.Abbreviations b Slope of characteristic curve, differential sensitivity - F impulse frequency in imp/s - imp/s impulses/s - P w partial pressure of water vapor in torr - r correlation coefficient - T temperature in °C - T T-step - x resolving power in °C  相似文献

Summary A satellite mediated station for monitoring nanoclimate (climate in the millimeter range) data, suitable for use in polar regions is described. The station, located in the Ross desert of Antarctica, has been in operation for more than 3 years, measuring rock temperatures, air temperature, light, snow, wind, and moisture. The data indicate that biological activity in the cryptoendolithic microbial ecosystem is limited to the period from mid November to mid February. The total number of hours of biological activity, based on assumptions of the minimum light, temperature and moisture requirements of the community, is less than 1000 h/year. The time above 0°C, representing more nearly optimal conditions, is between 50 and 550 h/year, depending on the orientation of the surface.Ross desert is an unofficial name for the ice-free region between 160° and 164°E and 76°30 and 78°30S. This area is more generally referred to as the dry valleys  相似文献

Summary Amber mutants of Escherichia coli K-12 affected in the structural gene (rpoD) for th subunit of RNA polymerase have been obtained from a strain harboring a temperature-sensitive amber suppressor (supF-Ts6) which is active only at low temperatures. These mutants grow normally at low temperature (30°C) but do not grow at high temperature (42°C) due to the inability to synthesize factor. In one mutant studied in detail (rpoD40), the rate of -factor synthesis at 30°C is about half that of the wild type and is decreased to 10%–15% within 1 h of incubation at 42°C. The synthesis of core polymerase subunits or bulk protein is virtually unaffected at least for 2 h. The defect of the mutant in synthesis and growth at high temperature can be suppressed by any of the amber suppressors tested (supD, supE or supF). RNA-polymerase holoenzymes prepared from the mutant cells carrying each of the suppressors (grown at 42°C) exhibit different thermostabilities attributable to alterations in the factor. The reduced synthesis in the mutant is accompanied by the synthesis of polypeptide tentatively identified as amber fragment. These results as well as the genetic mapping data indicate that the amber mutation (rpoD40) resides within the structural gene for the factor and directly affects synthesis upon inactivation of the suppressor at high temperature.  相似文献

Temperature dependence (25–50 °C) of chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence induction, far-red radiation (FR)-induced relaxation of the post-irradiation transient increase in apparent F0, and the trans-thylakoid proton gradients (pH) was examined in maize leaves. Temperatures above 30 °C caused an elevation of F0 level and an enhancement of F0 quenching during actinic irradiation. Millisecond delayed light emission (ms-DLE), which reflects the magnitude of pH, decreased strikingly above 35 °C, and almost disappeared at 50 °C. It indicates that the heat-enhanced quenching of F0 under actinic irradiation could not be attributed mainly to the mechanism of pH-dependent quenching. The relaxation of the post-irradiation transient increase in apparent F0 upon FR irradiation could be decomposed into two exponential components (1 = 0.7–1.8 s, 2 = 2.0–9.9 s). Decay times of both components increased with temperature increasing from 25 to 40–45 °C. The bi-phasic kinetics of FR-induced relaxation of the post-irradiation transient increase in apparent F0 and its temperature dependence may be related to plastoquinone (PQ) compartmentation in the thylakoid membranes and its re-organisation at elevated temperature.  相似文献

Changes in carbon isotope composition(13C) and leaf morphology associated withvegetative phase change were monitored in Metrosiderosexcelsa Sol. ex Gaertn. (family Myrtaceae). Plants of threeontogenetic states were used: juvenile seedlings, micropropagated plants in arejuvenated state, and reproductively mature plants bearing leaves with adultcharacteristics. The effects of temperature regime (32/24 °C,24/16 °C, and 16/8 °C day/night) and plantarchitecture (branched and single-stemmed plants) were studied in two separateexperiments. Although both juvenile and rejuvenated plants exhibited juvenileleaf morphology at the start of the experiments, there was no differencebetweenleaf 13C in these plants and that in adultplantsat this time (mean ca. –27%). Vegetative phase change occurred injuvenileand rejuvenated plants grown at 24/16 °C, and there was acorresponding increase in leaf 13C (from ca.–27% to –23%) in these two groups of plants. Leaf13C in adult plants remained relatively constant(ca. –26%) at 24/16 °C. There was little change in leaf13C in all plant states maintained at 32/24°C or 16/8 °C, and vegetative phase change didnot occur in juvenile and rejuvenated plants grown under these two temperatureregimes. Rejuvenated plants grown in a greenhouse also exhibited a progressivedevelopment of adult leaf morphology, accompanied by an increase in leaf13C, an effect that was more pronounced insingle-stemmed (from –26.4% to ca. –24%) than in branched plants. Itis suggested that increasing 13C in juvenile andrejuvenated plants undergoing phase change is a result of reduced sink strengthin single-stemmed plants, and to a lesser extent within each branch of branchedplants, causing reduced stomatal conductance and photosynthesis.  相似文献

The solid-state conformation of the first N-protected ornithine derivative has been established by X-ray analysis. The hydrochloride of N-(9-fluorenyl)methoxycarbonyl-L-ornithine crystallises as diethyl ether solvate. The backbone (0, , , 1) torsion angles are (174.9°, –84.0°, 145.9°, –171.0°). The conformation of the urethane amide bond is trans. The ornithine aliphatic side chain adopts preferred fully extended conformation which is stabilised by the hydrogen bonding of the –NH3 + group to the diethyl ether molecule, carboxyl group and Cl- anions.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of monoamines in the pharynx and oesophagus of the rhesus monkey (Macacus rhesus) and the cat (Felis domestica) was investigated by means of fluorescence microscopical and chemical methods. Fluorimetric determinations reveal the presence of varying amounts of noradrenaline in the pharynx and oesophagus of the rhesus monkey. The lowest amount (0.05 (g/g) was found in the lower part of the oesophagus, the so-called sphincter-segment. The middle and upper part of the oesophagus contain medium amounts of noradrenaline (0.06–0.09 g) whereas the highest concentration was detected in the pharynx (0.14 (g/g). Neither dopamine nor adrenaline occurred in the tissue pieces analyzed. Fluorescence microscopically noradrenaline was found to be located in varicose intramural nerve fibre plexus which innervate mucous glands and blood vessels in the pharynx of both species. In the rhesus monkey, the lamina muscularis mucosae of all parts of the oesophagus is supplied by a well developed noradrenergic ground-plexus. Preterminal and terminal varicose nerve fibres are distributed in myenteric and submucous ganglia of the oesophagus; the number of such ganglia decreases towards the lower segment. The density of the adrenergic innervation is higher in myenteric when compared to submucous ganglia. The arrangement of the intraganglionic terminals suggests that both axosomatic and axodendritic contacts occur in Auerbach's ganglia whereas axodendritic contacts seem to predominate in Meissner's ganglia. Myenteric ganglia situated close to the submucosa as well as true submucous ganglia may be occasionally seen to be traversed by faintly fluorescent non-varicosed fibres which do not establish any synaptic contacts. The fluorescence intensity of intraganglionic varicosities varies considerably; accordingly the transmitter content of individual varicosities seems to be very variable. The adrenergic innervation of the lamina muscularis is restricted to single contorted fibres being sparsely distributed throughout the longitudinal smooth muscle layer. The circularly arranged smooth musculature of the sphincter-segment lacks an adrenergic nerve supply. The vagus nerve carries sympathetic adrenergic fibres to the lower oesophagus and the cardia. Species differences between the innervation pattern in rhesus monkeys and cats are outlined: No adrenergically innervated ganglia occur in the submucosa of the cat. However, part of the myenteric ganglia in cats exhibit an adrenergic innervation pattern similar to that seen in submucous ganglia of the rhesus monkey. They might therefore be regarded as morphologically equivalent to the plexus submucosus which is, however, present in the whole gut. The density of the noradrenergic ground-plexus in the muscularis mucosae of the cat's oesophagus is less than that of the corresponding plexus in rhesus monkeys. The influence of noradrenaline upon the smooth musculature and the neurons from myenteric as well as submucous ganglia is discussed. From the point of view of the adrenergic innervation there is no structure corresponding to the sphincterlike lower oesophageal segment.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Joachim-Jungius-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften, Hamburg.  相似文献

Summary Respiration of an undescribed species of soil nematode of the genus Chiloplacus from the Canadian High Arctic was measured at 2°, 5°, 10°, 15°, 20° and 25°C. The corresponding metabolic rates were 0.2697×10-3 l, 0.3406×10-3 l, 0.8408×10-3 l, 0.8539×10-3 l, 1.8420×10-3 l and 2.9360×10-3 l O2 ind-1 h-1, respectively, for a nematode of 1.0 g dry weight. The relationship between respiration and dry weight for Chiloplacus sp. at 10°C is described by the function log R=-3.0693+0.8844 log W. Q10 values for the 2°–5°, 5°–10°, 10°–15°, 15°–20° and 20°–25°C temperature intervals were 2.18, 6.09, 1.03, 4.65 and 2.54, respectively. Chiloplacus sp. showed raised metabolic rates at low tempetatures compared with species from warmer environments. Metabolic rates of representative samples of the soil, nematode fauna (dominated by individuals of the genus Plectus) from the same location were 0.1593×10-3 l, 0.3603×10-3 l and 0.5332×10-3 l O2 ind-1 h-1 at 5°, 10° and 15°C for an average nematode of 0.4297 g dry weight.  相似文献

Summary A diploid strain of yeast, homozygous for the mutation cdc5-1, undergoes a normal meiosis at 25° C. At the nonpermissive temperature of 34° C, meiosis is arrested at the first meiotic division, after premeiotic DNA replication and recombination commitment have taken place. Haploidisation commitment does not occur at 34° C. Electron microscopy reveals that synaptons (synaptonemal complexes) are formed and the stage of arrest is characterised by a prevalence of modified synaptons, which consist of paired lateral elements lacking the central elements. Prolonged incubation at this stage of arrest results in unusually high recombination levels, perhaps related to the synaptonal structures observed.Temperature shift-up experiments (transfers of cells from 25° C to 34° C at various times during meiosis) reveal that the CDC5 function is required for both the first and the second divisions of meiosis.  相似文献

Summary The weight-specific oxygen consumption ( ) of prairie voles caught in winter is 24% higher at 27.5° C and 29% higher at 7.5° C than that of summer animals, thus affording a higher weight-specific thermogenesis in winter than in summer which may allow tolerance to lower thermal exposures. Coincident with the increase in weight-specific rates of oxygen consumption is a decrease in body weight. When total energetic cost to maintain an animal per unit time is calculated, the cost at 27.5° C is the same for both summer and winter animals. Further, the cost to maintain an animal at 7.5° C is less in winter than in summer. Arguments are presented suggesting that prairie voles compensate for increased weight-specific thermogenesis in winter by lowering body weight. The responses to thermal acclimation are quite different in summer and winter animals, thus implying different sorts of metabolic organization. Acclimation to 5° C effects a 26% increase in at 27.5° C of winter voles, and acclimation to 30° C does not change . In contrast, at 27.5° C of summer animals is unaffected by 5° C acclimation, and depressed 20% by 30° C acclimation. Thus, the animals are capable of considerable physiological adjustment to varying thermal conditions in different seasons.  相似文献

Acclimation of goldfish at 35°C increased the cerebellar content of aspartate, glutamate, and taurine and [3H]glutamate uptake. Acclimation at 4°C increased the levels of glutamine, serine, and alanine and glutamine synthetase (GS) activity. Adenosine content increased in cerebellum of fish acclimated to warm temperature. K+-evoked release of endogenous and exogenous glutamate from cerebellar slices increased in fish acclimated at 35°C compared to 4°C. The basal level of cyclic adenosine 3:5-monophosphate (cAMP) in perfused cerebellar slices in fish acclimated at 35°C was much higher than in fish acclimated at 5° and 22°C. It is concluded that variations of environmental temperature produces large neurochemical changes in goldfish cerebellum.  相似文献

A bleach-stable, thermotolerant, alkaline protease for detergent formulation from a newly isolated Bacillus SB5 is reported. Most (85%) activity of the enzyme was retained in the presence of 10% (v/v) H2O2 and 1% SDS (w/v) at 40°C, after 1 h. The enzyme was optimal at pH 10 and 60°C to 70°C. Enzyme activity was enhanced 30 to 80% in presence of ionic and non-ionic detergents, surfactants and commercial detergents or bleach.  相似文献

Petrobia harti (Ewing) displays a facultative summer diapause in the egg stage. An adult female will lay only either diapause or non-diapause eggs throughout her life. In the laboratory, diapause eggs are laid by females which develop on detachedOxalis articulata leaves under long-day photoperiods and a relatively low temperature of 19±1°C.Diapause occurs in a stage of advanced embryonic development, in which the embryo appears U-shaped when observed from the egg's ventral side. Embryonic development ceased at this stage, and no further growth occurred when the eggs were kept under a relative humidity of about 70% in various photoperiod and temperature conditions. However, when the eggs were hydrated by placing them on wet cotton wool, development in some embryos (apparently in those which had completed their diapause development) proceeded beyond the U-stage at a rate similar to that in non-diapause embryos and the eggs hatched.Under LD 168 and 19±1°C or 26±1°C, the later from oviposition the period of egg hydration started, the higher the percentage of diapause termination. Under LD 168 and 26±1°C, diapause termination occurred mostly during the first week of hydration, while at 19±1°C mostly during the second and third week.At 26±1°C, in eggs hydrated 15 days but not 30 days from oviposition, the percentage of diapause termination was higher under a long-day than under a short-day photoperiod.Under LD 168, when the eggs were hydrated continuously from oviposition or starting 15, 30 and 45 days from it, the percentage of diapause termination was higher at 26±1°C than at 19±1°C.The percentage of diapause-laying adult females and the intensity of egg diapause were higher when the pre-imaginal mites grew at LD 1212 and 19±1°C, than when they grew at LD 168 and 26±1°C. This maternal effect on egg diapause intensity was expressed when the eggs were maintained at LD 1212 and 19±1°C but not at LD 168 and 26±1°C.  相似文献

Skin temperature from three recording sites (web dorsum and two digital sites) on one hand were compared over a 30-minute period during which room temperature was raised from 66° to 80°F causing skin temperatures to range from 78.5° to 92.3°F. The web dorsum remained significantly warmer than either digital site at the lowest skin temperatures; no significant inter-site differences were seen as skin temperature gradually increased. These findings imply that none of the three sites is more advantageous than the others when recording hand temperature values around or above 85°F. However, at the lower levels of skin temperature, there is a floor below which the web dorsum is no longer a sensitive indicator. More generally, basic data of this type provide a necessary but often absent foundation for routine practice of clinical biofeedback. We gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Kelly Peters in the data collection and of Steve Krause and Rick Scott in the data analysis.  相似文献

The heat-sensitivity of photosynthetic oxygen evolution of thylakoids isolated from spinach increases by increasing the pH above neutral value. The temperature for inactivation (transition temperature) is lowered from about 45° C (pH 6.0–7.4) to 33°C (pH 8.5). Similar results are obtained with intact chloroplasts. At pH 7.0 the transition temperature of washed thylakoids decreases by lowering the salt concentration below 20 mM with monovalent cations (Li+, Na+, K+) and below 3–4 mM with divalent cations (Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+). Illumination decreases the heat-sensitivity of oxygen evolution in intact chloroplasts, but even increases the heat-sensitivity in uncoupled chloroplasts. In intact chloroplasts the transition temperature of the heat-induced rise in chlorophyll fluorescence yield (Fo; see Schreiber and Armond 1978) decreases from 44° C to 38° C when the pH of the suspending medium is increased from 6.5 to 8.5. At 20° C, Fo is almost insensitive to pH (6.0–8.5). At 40° C, however, Fo is constant between 6.0 and 7.0, but strongly increases by increasing the pH above neutral value. The results are discussed in terms of a close relation between electrostatic forces at the thylakoid membrane and thermal sensitivity of photosynthetic apparatus. It is suggested that the heat-sensitivity of the photosystem II complex partially depends on the ionization state of fixed groups having alkaline pK. The packed volume of thylakoids suspended in a low salt medium increases when the temperature is increased above 30° C (pH 7.0) and above 20° C (pH 8.0), respectively. This result suggests a heat-induced increase in surface charge density of the thylakoid membrane.Abbreviations HEPES N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N-2-ethane sulfonic acid - MES morpholinoethane sulfonic acid - MOPS 2-N-morpholinopropane sulfonic acid - TRICIN N-[tris(hydroxymethyl)-methyl] glycine  相似文献

Summary The cardiac effects of neurohypophysial hormones in the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica (Temminck and Schlegel), were studied in isolated atrial preparations at room temperatures of 17–20°C, 25–28°C, or 28°C. Arginine vasotocin (AVT), oxytocin (OXY), mesotocin (MSN), and isotocin (ISN) produced dose-related positive chronotropic and inotropic responses. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) was not effective. The effects of ISN on the atrial rate and tension were not affected in the presence of phentolamine or propranolol, which are and adrenergic antagonists, respectively. The activity of the eel heart and the effects of neurohypophysial hormones are temperature-dependent. The functional significance of these cardiac effects of neurohypophysial hormones is not known.  相似文献
