Experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of mosquito fish to various salt concentrations. Mosquito fish, Gambusia affinis , (total length (T.L.) 27–37 mm) were subjected to abrupt and gradual changes from fresh water to various salinities (S). Low mortality (10%) occurred when the fish were transferred from fresh water (S = 0·5‰) to 50% sea water (S = 19·5‰ Through gradual adaptation 65·0% of the fish were able to tolerate 100% sea water for 7 days. After a 7 -day stay in sea water, fish were readapted to fresh water during a 3-h period. The results indicate that they were well able to tolerate the abrupt change. Through a gradual adaptation fish were also able to tolerate salinities ranging from 39·0‰ (100% sea water) to 58·8‰  相似文献

Experimental study of efficiency of Gambusia affinis holbrooki (GIRARD, 1859) (Fish-Poecilidae). Gambusia affinis is a culiciphage fish which was introduced in Tunisia in 1929 to control mosquito larvae. In the present study, we confirm, under laboratory conditions, the good efficacy of Gambusia affinis against mosquito larvae. The consumption of larvae decreases with the evolution of larvae instars and increases, for the same instar, in relation with the fish size. In fact, the size of the prey is related to the predator's size: fish belonging to the length class [20-24 mm] prefer IIIrd instar, fish from class length [25-29 mm] prefer pupae and IVth instar. The trophic test shows that G. affinis has a clear preference for Culicidae larvae, except fish belonging to the 2 length classes [35-39 mm] and [40-44 mm] for which Culicidae and Ephemeroptera have similar preference. In addition, at high temperature (30 degrees C), Gambusia affinis has a higher efficiency.  相似文献

Summary Isolated heads of trout (Salmo gairdneri) were used to study the unidirectional flux of sodium and chloride across the gills in salt water. Two perfusion techniques were employed. Under constant pressure perfusion, the addition of adrenaline during the perfusion causes an increase in the flow-rate. Under constant flow-rate conditions, adrenaline provokes a decrease in pressure. A comparison of influx determination made with these two techniques of perfusion shows that variations in flow-rate of perfusion do not affect the assessment of these fluxes.A net efflux of sodium, but not of chloride, is demonstrated in sea water. The effluxes of sodium and chloride observed in sea water are decreasedd about 50% during a rapid transfer to fresh water. The addition of potassium to this medium stimulates the effluxes of sodium and chloride, suggesting a Na/K exchange participating in the chloride excretion.Adrenaline causes an inhibition of sodium and chloride efflux in sea water which persists after transfer to fresh water and the addition of potassium. Only the influx of chloride is inhibited at a concentration of 10–5 M whereas the sodium influx is unaffected. The presence of adrenaline results in a net influx of both sodium and chloride. The differential action of adrenaline on the influxes of sodium and chloride suggests that the hemodynamic modifications provoked by this catecholamine occur independently of its aforementioned ion exchange effects.  相似文献

Differential pathogenesis was observed in two species of fish naturally infected with the pentastome Sebekia mississippiensis. Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) showed a mild inflammatory response to developing nymphs, whereas swordtails (Xiphophorus helleri) had an extensive granulomatous inflammatory reaction with accompanying hemorrhage, myositis, and myodegeneration. This suggested that certain species of tropical fish reared in the southeastern United States may be at risk to potentially harmful infections with this parasite.  相似文献

As potassium, chloride and water traverse cell membranes, the cells of stenohaline marine invertebrates should swell if exposed to sea water mixed with an isosmotic KCl solution as they do when exposed to sea water diluted with water. To test this hypothesis respiratory tree fragments of the holothurian Isostichopus badionotus were exposed to five isosmotic media prepared by mixing artificial sodium sea water with isosmotic (611 mmol/l) KCl solution to obtain 100, 83, 71, 60 and 50% sea water, with and without 2 mmol/l ouabain. For comparison, respiratory tree fragments were incubated in sea water diluted to the same concentrations with distilled water, with and without ouabain. Cell water contents and potassium and sodium concentrations were unaffected by KCl-dilution or ouabain in isosmotic KCl-sea water mixtures. In tissues exposed to H(2)O-diluted sea water, cell water increased osmometrically and potassium, sodium and chloride concentrations decreased with dilution; ouabain caused a decrease in potasium and an increase in sodium but no effect on chloride concentrations. The isotonicity of the isosmotic KCl solution cannot be adscribed to impermeability of the cell membrane to KCl as both ions easily traverse the cell membrane. Rather, operationally immobilized extracellular sodium ions, which electrostatically hold back anions and consequently water, together with the lack of a cellward electrochemical gradient for potassium, resulting from membrane depolarization caused by high external potassium concentration, would explain the isotonicity of isosmotic KCl solution. The high external potassium concentration also antagonizes the inhibitory effect of ouabain on the Na(+)/K(+) ATPase responsible for sodium and potassium active transport.  相似文献

The relationship between parasitic glochidia of Anodonia woodiana (Unionidae: Anodonti-nae) and potential fish hosts was investigated in the laboratory. Intensity of parasitism was highest on the exotic fish Gambusia affinis , lower on the native species Puntius semijascio-latus and Metzia takakii , and least on Rhodeus sinensis . Glochidia generally attached at fin margins, particularly the pectorals and caudal. In Gambusia affinis , the incidence of glochidia on the pectorals was higher than would be expected on the basis of ratios between fin margin lengths. Apparently, the role of the pectoral fins in locomotion makes them more liable to glochidial contact, thereby increasing their susceptibility to attachment.
The duration of glochidial attachment was shortened as temperatures increased. Mean values ranged from 14-4 days at 15°C to 6 days at 27°C. At 33°C glochidia rapidly detached and metamorphosis was unsuccessful. Significantly, water temperatures in A. woodiana habitats in Hong Kong rarely exceed 30°C.  相似文献

Gambusia affinis were exposed to the insecticides ABATE®, fenthion, chlorpyrifos, methyl parathion, and malathion for 24 h at concentrations of 1, 5, and 10 ppb and for 48 h at 5 ppb. The thermal tolerance was lowered significantly for male and female G. affinis by the toxicants methyl parathion and chlorpyrifos at 5 and 10 ppb with 24 h exposure. Activity was restricted with fish exposed to methyl parathion and chlorpyrifos at concentrations of 10 ppb for 24 h and at 5 ppb for 48 h.  相似文献

Extraction of serial sections of cattle hoof epidermis with solutions of calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, guanidine hydrochloride, ammonium sulfate, and potassium phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) at varying salt concentrations demonstrates that keratohyalin (KH) is extracted by these salts at certain molarities. Under given conditions of time and temperature, each salt has a specific extraction pattern, and similar salts have similar extraction patterns. Dialysis of the salt extracts of hoof epidermis against distilled water results in the macroaggregition of KH, as assayed by histochemical methods. Although the various macroaggregates appear identical at the histochemical level, they display different ultrastructural characteristics. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the sodium decyl sulfate-solubilized macroaggregates results in the fractionation of a 20 (or more) member homologous series of oligomers. Isolation of the various oligomeric species of bovine keratohyalin and re-electrophoresis indicate that the various KH species can undergo depolymerization. Amino acid analyses of the unfractionated bovine macroaggregates and the various molecular weight species of bovine KH are similar, further demonstrating homology of the oligomers. The molecular weight of the subunit (monomer) of bovine KH is 14,955, estimated from the amino acid analyses.  相似文献

Summary Oryza coarctata, a highly salt-resistant wild rice species, is commonly found on the banks of coastal rivers in India. This species can also withstand saline water (20 to 40 dSm−1 E.C) submergence for quite a long period. It was revealed thatO. coarctata has some special unicellular salt hairs (trichomes) on the adaxial surface of the leaves, by which they efficiently maintain a low concentration of toxic salts in the plant tissue. Sodium and chloride were the dominant ions in the excreted material but they also excrete potassium, magnesium and calcium. With the increase in soil salinity sodium, magnesium and chloride excretion increased.O. coarctata maintained the optimum mineral concentration in its tissues. Maximum accumulation of potassium was observed in the leaves. With the increase in salt stress total biomass production and osmotic potential increased over control but there was no change in the moisture percentage of leaves.  相似文献

Goldfish were exposed to sublethal levels of cadmium (means of 44.5 and 380 μg Cd++/l) for periods of 25 and 50 days, and their water-electrolyte status evaluated by reference to plasma and muscle levels of sodium, potassium and chloride and muscle water content. Significant changes in plasma chloride, tissue potassium and tissue water content were observed after 25 days in both test solutions. Specimens held at the more dilute cadmium concentration were apparently able to compensate for most of the initial cadmium effect and, after 50 days exposure, were characterized only by a continuing depression in plasma sodium level. This suggests that the cadmium MATC value for this species under the conditions employed is probably less than 45 μg Cd++/l. Goldfish exposed to 380 μg Cd++/l for 50 days exhibited significant deviations in plasma sodium and chloride levels as well as in tissue sodium and water content, and these parameters may provide useful indices of cadmium effects at sublethal concentrations.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of three introduced Poeciliidae, Gambusia affinis holbrooki Baird and Girard, Xiphophorus helleri (Günther) and X. maculatus (Heckel) was studied over a 14-month period in Brisbane, Queensland. Photoperiod and water temperature determined the length of the breeding season in G. affinis , which produced up to nine broods between August and March, with the peak of reproductive activity in October. Fecundity was linearly related to body weight in G. affinis (mean fecundity = 22.78 ± 1.02, range = 3–108 offspring per brood).
Xiphophorus helleri bred from August to May, producing eight to nine broods, with peak reproductive activity from October to December. Fecundity was curvilinearly related to body weight (mean fecundity = 60.15 ± 3.8, range = 7–183 offspring per brood. Xiphophorus maculatus bred between September and March, producing five to six broods during the study period. Fecundity was linearly related to standard length (s.l.) (mean fecundity = 27.27 ± 2.4, range = 3–92 offspring per brood). Although the reproductive strategy of the three species differs, all have the capacity to build up large populations in south-eastern Queensland. Their present distributions and relative abundance are discussed.  相似文献

Salt stress causes nutritional imbalance and ion toxicity which affects wheat growth and production. A population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) were developed by crossing Pasban90 (salt tolerant) and Frontana (salt suceptible) for identification of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for physiological traits including relative water content, membrane stability index, water potential, osmotic potential, total chlorophyll content, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and biochemical traits including proline contents, superoxide dismutase, sodium content, potassium content, chloride content and sodium/potassium ratio by tagging 202 polymorphic simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers. Linkage map of RILs comprised of 21 linkage group covering A, B and D genome for tagging and maped a total of 60 QTLs with major and minor effect. B genome contributed to the highest number of QTLs under salt stress condition. Xgwm70 and Xbarc361 mapped on chromosome 6B was linked with Total chlorophyll, water potential and sodium content. The increasing allele for all these QTLs were advanced from parent Pasban90. Current study showed that Genome B and D had more potentially active genes conferring plant tolerance against salinity stress which may be exploited for marker assisted selection to breed salinity tolerant high yielding wheat varieties.  相似文献

The discovery of Transversotrema patialense cercariae in an aquarium harboring tropical fish triggered the present study. The purpose was to estimate the potential range of infection of local freshwater and fishpond populations by T. patialense. Experimental infection of T. patialense differed among 3 species employed: 76.5% for Tilapia zillii, 37.8% for Gambusia affinis, and none for 2 varieties of Cyprinus carpio. These patterns of infectivity are different from those published previously for T. patialense infections, and they may be attributed to the origin of the fish (temperate water vs. tropical and subtropical waters) and the size of their scales. In G. affinis, but not in the other species, worm load and fish length were closely related, and the left side harbored heavier worm burdens than the right side. Taken together, these results suggest that imported T. patialense may spread to various indigenous natural and cultured fish populations, with ensuing potential harm to these populations.  相似文献

Aeluropus littoralis is a perennial halophyte, native to coastal zones. Although it is usually exposed to high saline, this plant grows normally without toxicity symptoms. In order to assess leaf salt excretion, different growth parameters, Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+) and Cl(-) concentrations, as well as excreted ions were examined in plants grown for 2 months in the presence of various salinity levels (0-800 mM NaCl). In addition, salt crystals, salt glands and other leaf epidermal structures were investigated. Results showed that total plant growth decreased linearly with increase to medium salinity. This reduction concerns mainly shoot growth. In addition, this species was able to maintain its shoot water content at nearly 50% of the control even when subjected to 800 mM NaCl. Root water content seemed to be unaffected by salt. Sodium and chloride ion contents in shoots and in roots increased with salinity concentrations, in contrast to our observation for potassium. However, calcium and magnesium contents were not greatly affected by salinity. Excreted salts in A. littoralis leaves were in favor of sodium and chloride, but against potassium, calcium and magnesium which were retained in plants. Sodium and chloride were excreted from special salt glands, which were scattered on the both leaf surfaces. In addition to salt glands, papillae were the most frequent epidermal structure found on A. littoralis leaves, and are likely involved in A. littoralis salt resistance.  相似文献

A new moderately halophilic Micrococcus sp. 4, isolated from salt-pan water from India, produced extracellular amylase when cultivated aerobically in medium containing wheat bran, peptone, beef extract and sodium chloride. Other salts, such as sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate and sodium sulphate, were also found to be suitable for growth and enzyme production. Maximum amylase activity (1.2 IU ml-1) was secreted in the presence of 1 mol 1-1 sodium chloride. The enzyme requires the presence of either sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium nitrate, sodium citrate or sodium acetate for its activity. Maximum activity was found in the presence of 1 mol 1-1 sodium chloride. The pH and temperature optima for enzyme activity were 7.5 and 50°C, respectively.  相似文献

The capacity of a warm-adapted population of mosquito fish ( Gambusia affinis ) from the Sonoran Desert and a cold-adapted population from northern Utah to adjust to changing environmental temperatures has been described in terms of four criteria: (1) critical thermal maxima, (2) resistance times at high, lethal temperatures, (3) upper incipient lethal temperatures, and (4) lower lethal temperatures. Non-genetic scope for adaptation as related to changes in the thermal history of the individual and expressed in terms of the tolerance domain was identical for both populations. Genetic differences in adaptive capacity were apparent. The cold-adapted population was less tolerant of heat and more tolerant of cold as would be anticipated.  相似文献

Intertidal hermit crabs were stepwise acclimated to 10, 20, and 30‰ salinity (S) and 21 ± 1 °C. Hemolymph osmolality, sodium, chloride, and magnesium were isosmotic (isoionic) to ambient sea water at 30‰ and hyperosmotic (hyperionic) at 20 and 10‰ S, while hemolymph potassium was significantly hyperionic in all acclimation salinities. Total body water did not differ significantly at any acclimation salinity. Oxygen uptake rates were higher in summer-than winter-adapted crabs. No salinity effect on oxygen consumption occurred in winter-adapted individuals. Summer-adapted, 30‰ acclimated crabs had a significantly lower oxygen consumption rate than those acclimated 10 and 20‰ S. Crabs exposed to 30 10 30‰ and 10 30 10‰ semidiurnal (12 h) and diurnal (24.8 h) fluctuating salinity regimes showed variable osmoregulatory and respiratory responses. Hemolymph osmolality followed the osmolality of the fluctuating ambient sea water in all cases, but was regulated hyperosmotically. Hemolymph sodium, chloride, and magnesium concentrations were similar to hemolymph osmolality changes. Sodium levels fluctuated the least. Hemolymph potassium was regulated hyperionically during all fluctuation patters, but corresponded to sea water potassium only under diurnal conditions. The osmoregulatory ability of Clibanarius vittatus (Bosc) resembles that reported for several euryhaline brachyuran species. The time course of normalized oxygen consumption rate changed inversely with salinity under semidiurnal and diurnal 10 30 10‰ S fluctuations. Patterns of 30 10 30‰ S cycles had no effect on oxygen consumption rate time course changes. The average hourly oxygen consumption rates during both semidiurnal fluctuations were significantly lower than respective control rates, but no statistical difference was observed under diurnal conditions.  相似文献

Summary The corpuscles of Stannius of threespined sticklebacks contain two glandular cell types of presumed endocrine nature. To elucidate the function of both cell types the secretory activity of the cells was studied in fully adapted seawater and freshwater fishes and in specimens transferred from sea water to fresh water or adapted to media of various ionic composition. The secretory activity was established, in tissue sections and freeze-etch replicas, by estimating the volume of the nuclei, the density of the nuclear pores, and the frequency of exocytotic phenomena. The type-1 cells, ultrastructurally comparable to the predominant or only cell type described in many other teleosts, are more active in sea water than in fresh water. The activity of the type-2 cells, whose ultrastructural appearance is known only for salmonids and eels, is higher in fresh water. Transfer of seawater fishes to fresh water results in reduction of type-1 cells and activation of type-2 cells. The factors responsible for these changes were analyzed by exposure of fishes to solutions of various salts in fresh water and to artificial sea water with a reduced content of one of its components. The high activity of type-1 cells in sea water proved to be related to the high calcium content of this medium. These cells probably produce a substance comparable to hypocalcin, the endocrine factor isolated from the Stannius corpuscles of some other teleost species. The high activity of type-2 cells in fresh water appeared to be connected with the low sodium and potassium levels of this medium. Type-2 cells possibly produce a hitherto unknown hormone involved in the control of sodium and/or potassium metabolism. The technical assistance of Miss C. Mein and Mr. J. Zagers is gratefully acknowledged  相似文献

Alien species are one of the most serious threats to the decline and extinction of native amphibian populations. In this study, we examined the predation of invasive Western Mosquitofish Gambusia affinis on the eggs, embryos, and tadpoles of Duttaphrynus melanostictus and Pelophylax nigromaculatus in south China. Our results suggested that the survival of eggs and embryos remaining in the egg capsules of P. nigromaculatus and D. melanostictus was significantly higher than those removed from the egg capsule at 12-h intervals within 72 h in the presence of G. affinis. The survival of P. nigromaculatus eggs and embryos without egg capsules was significantly lower than those of D. melanostictus without egg capsules. The survival of P. nigromaculatus eggs and embryos with egg capsules was significantly higher than those of D. melanostictus with egg capsules from 24 h to 72 h except for 12 h. The survival of D. melanostictus tadpoles was significantly higher than that of P. nigromaculatus tadpoles in the presence of G. affinis. The survival of Gosner stage 26 tadpoles of P. nigromaculatus was significantly higher than that of Gosner stage 30 tadpoles from 12 h to 60 h, but there were no significant differences at 72 h. In contrast, the survival of Gosner stage 26 tadpoles of D. melanostictus was significantly lower than that of Gosner stage 30 tadpoles within 72 h, recording every 12 h. The increasing temperature caused a significant increase in predation by G. affinis on P. nigromaculatus eggs and embryos. The outer jelly capsule surrounding anurans eggs might serve as a mechanical defense against predation by G. affinis due to its large diameter, relatively stationary state and unpalatability. The differences in the vulnerability of P. nigromaculatus and D. melanostictus embryos and tadpoles to G. affinis probably due to differences in the unpalatability, black skin and activity. Based on the magnitude of predation by G. affinis on the eggs, embryos and tadpoles of these two species and the combined impact of temperature, we might speculate that invasive G. affinis and global warming would have more detrimental impacts on population viability of P. nigromaculatus than D. melanostictus in China.  相似文献
