Alterations of respiratory patterns have been observed in pelvic girdle pain subjects during the active straight leg raise (ASLR). This study investigated how pain-free subjects coordinate motor control during an ASLR when this task is complicated by the addition of a respiratory challenge. Trunk muscle activation, intra-abdominal pressure, intra-thoracic pressure, pelvic floor motion, downward pressure of the non-lifted leg and respiratory rate were compared between resting supine, ASLR, breathing with inspiratory resistance (IR) and ASLR+IR. Subjects responded to ASLR+IR with an increase in the motor activation in the abdominal wall and chest wall compared to when ASLR and IR were performed in isolation. Activation of obliquus internus abdominis was greater on the side of the leg lift during the ASLR+IR, in comparison to symmetrical activation observed in the other abdominal wall muscles. The incremental increase of motor activity was associated with greater intra-abdominal pressure baseline shift when lifting the leg during ASLR+IR compared to ASLR. Individual variation was apparent in the form of the motor control patterns, mostly reflected in variable respiratory activation of the abdominal wall. The findings highlight the flexibility of the neuromuscular system in adapting to simultaneous respiratory and stability demands.  相似文献

Central Nervous System modulates the motor activities of all trunk muscles to concurrently regulate the intra-abdominal and intra-thoracic pressures. The study aims to evaluate the effect of inspiratory and expiratory loads on abdominal muscle activity during breathing in healthy subjects. Twenty-three higher education students (21.09 ± 1.56 years; 8 males) breathed at a same rhythm (inspiration: two seconds; expiration: four seconds) without load and with 10% of the maximal inspiratory or expiratory pressures, in standing. Surface electromyography was performed to assess the activation intensity of rectus abdominis, external oblique and transversus abdominis/internal oblique muscles, during inspiration and expiration. During inspiration, transversus abdominis/internal oblique activation intensity was significantly lower with inspiratory load when compared to without load (p = 0.009) and expiratory load (p = 0.002). During expiration, the activation intensity of all abdominal muscles was significantly higher with expiratory load when compared to without load (p < 0.05). The activation intensity of external oblique (p = 0.036) and transversus abdominis/internal oblique (p = 0.022) was significantly higher with inspiratory load when compared to without load. Transversus abdominis/internal oblique activation intensity was significantly higher with expiratory load when compared to inspiratory load (p < 0.001).Transversus abdominis/internal oblique seems to be the most relevant muscle to modulate the intra-abdominal pressure for the breathing mechanics.  相似文献

BackgroundChanges in activation patterns of hip extensors and pelvic stabilizing muscles are recognized as factors that cause low back disorders and these disturbances could have an impact on the physiological loading and alter the direction and magnitude of joint reaction forces.ObjectiveTo investigate activation patterns of the gluteus maximus, semitendinosus and erector spinae muscles with healthy young individuals during four different modalities of therapeutic exercise.MethodsThirty-one volunteers were selected: (16 men and 15 women), age (24.5 ± 3.47 years), body mass of 66.89 ± 11.89 kg and a height of 1.70 ± 0.09 m). They performed four modalities of therapeutic exercise while the electromyographic activity of the investigated muscles was recorded to determine muscle pattern activation for each exercise.ResultsRepeated measure ANOVA revealed that muscle activation patterns were similar for the four analyzed exercises, starting with the semitendinosus, followed by the erector spinae, and then, the gluteus maximus. The gluteus maximus was the last activated muscle during hip extension associated with knee flexion (p < 0.0001), knee extension (p < 0.0001), and with lateral rotation and knee flexion (p < 0.05).ConclusionFindings of the present study suggested that despite individual variability, the muscle firing order was similar for the four therapeutic exercises.  相似文献

Hip and lumbar spine disorders often coexist in patients with total hip arthroplasty (THA). The current study aimed to reveal pelvic motion pathology and altered trunk and hip muscle recruitment patterns relating to pelvic motion in patients with THA. Twenty-one women who underwent THA and 12 age-matched healthy women were recruited. Pelvic kinematics and muscle recruitment patterns (i.e., amplitude, activity balance, and onset timing) of the gluteus maximus, semitendinosus, multifidus, and erector spinae were collected during prone hip extension. Compared with healthy subjects, the patients showed increased pelvic motion, especially ventral rotation, decreased multifidus muscle activity relative to the hip extensors, and delayed onset of multifidus activity, despite reaction times and speeds of leg motion not being significantly different between the groups. Furthermore, while contributing factors associated with ventral pelvic rotation were not found, delayed onset of multifidus activity was detected as a factor related to the increased anterior tilt of the pelvis (r = 0.47, p < 0.05) in patients with THA. These results suggest that patients with THA have dysfunction of the stabilizer muscles of the lumbopelvic region along with increased pelvic motion.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of leg preference and cycling experience on unilateral muscle efficiency and muscle activation. To achieve this purpose, two experiments were performed. Experiment 1 involved eight cyclists and experiment 2 included eight non-cyclists. Subjects underwent an incremental maximal test and submaximal trials of one-legged cycling for preferred and non-preferred leg. Oxygen uptake and muscle efficiency were compared between legs. The magnitude of muscle activation (RMS) and the inter-limb excitation were monitored for the vastus lateralis, biceps femoris and gastrocnemius (medial head) muscles during one-legged cycling with preferred and non-preferred leg. Variables of muscle activation, oxygen uptake and muscle efficiency (gross and net) did not differ between legs (P > 0.05). The magnitude of muscle activation and its variability were similar between legs while performing the unilateral pedaling. Inter-limb communication did not differ between experiments (P > 0.05). Similar activation between legs was consistent with the influence of bilateral practice for attaining similar performance between sides. These results do not support asymmetry in magnitude of muscle activation during pedaling.  相似文献

This study assessed the level and symmetry of deep abdominal muscle activation following a supratentorial stroke during a modified hip flexion task. Movement-related activation levels in the transversus abdominus (TrA) and internal oblique (IO) were investigated in people with a subacute (<3.25 months) supratentorial stroke (n = 11) and a matched control group (n = 11). Electromyographic activity in TrA and IO were recorded using fine wires inserted under ultrasound guidance while participants performed a standardised head lift or unilateral hip flexion. During head lift there was no significant difference in the amplitude of activation ipsi- and contra-lateral to the stroke or between groups. During unilateral hip flexion the TrA and IO were activated more on both sides when moving the paretic leg. In the control group muscle activity was modulated by task with activity being higher ipsilateral to the moving leg; in contrast in the stroke group IO muscle activity tended to be higher on the non-paretic side irrespective of moving limb. Greater TrA and IO muscle activity during hip flexion of the paretic leg may represent compensatory activity that acts to facilitate activation of the paretic hip flexors and/or the presence of overflow.  相似文献

Little is known about the motor control of the lumbo-pelvic musculature in microgravity and its simulation (bed-rest). Analysis of spectral and temporal electromyographic variables can provide information on motor control relevant for normal function. This study examined the effect of 56-days of bed-rest with 1-year follow-up in 10 male subjects on the median frequency and the activation timing in surface electromyographic recordings from five superficial lumbo-pelvic muscles during a repetitive knee movement task. Trunk fat mass (from whole body-composition measurements) and movement accuracy as possible explanatory factors were included. Increased median frequency was observed in the lumbar erector spinae starting late in bed-rest, but this was not seen in its synergist, the thoracic erector spinae (p < .0001). These changes persisted up to 1-year after bed-rest and were independent of changes in body-composition or movement accuracy. Analysis suggested decreases of median frequency (p < .0001) in the abdominal and gluteal muscles to result from increased (p < .01) trunk fat levels during and after bed-rest. No changes in lumbo-pelvic muscle activation timing were seen. The results suggest that bed-rest particularly affects the shorter lumbar erector spinae and that the temporal sequencing of superficial lumbo-pelvic muscle activation is relatively robust.  相似文献

Goal scoring represents the ultimate purpose of soccer and this is achieved when players perform accurate kicks. The purpose of the present study was to compare accurate and inaccurate soccer kicks aiming to top and bottom targets. Twenty-one soccer players performed consecutive kicks against top and bottom targets (0.5 m2) placed in the center of the goal. The kicking trials were categorized as accurate or inaccurate. The activation of tibialis anterior (TA), rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF) and gastrocnemius muscle (GAS) of the swinging leg and the ground reaction forces (GRFs) of the support leg were analyzed. The GRFs did not differ between kicking conditions (P > 0.05). There was significantly higher TA and BF and lower GAS EMG activity during accurate kicks to the top target (P < 0.05) compared with inaccurate kicks. Furthermore, there was a significantly lower TA and RF activation during accurate kicks against the bottom target (P < 0.05) compared with inaccurate kicks. Enhancing muscle activation of the TA and BF and reducing GAS activation may assist players to kick accurately against top targets. In contrast, players who display higher TA and RF activation may be less accurate against a bottom target. It was concluded that muscle activation of the kicking leg represents a significant mechanism which largely contributes to soccer kick accuracy.  相似文献

BackgroundLow back pain (LBP) development has been associated with occupational standing. Increased hip and trunk muscle co-activation is considered to be predisposing for LBP development during standing in previously asymptomatic individuals. The purpose of this work was to investigate muscle activation and LBP responses to a prescribed exercise program. Pain-developing (PD) individuals were expected to have decreased LBP and muscle co-activation following exercise intervention.MethodsElectromyography (EMG) data were recorded from trunk and hip muscle groups during 2-h of standing. An increase of >10 mm on visual analog scale (VAS) during standing was threshold for PD categorization. Participants were assigned to progressive exercise program with weekly supervision or control (usual activity) for 4 weeks then re-tested.ResultsForty percent were categorized as PD on day 1, VAS = 24.2 (±4.0) mm. PD exercisers (PDEX) had lower VAS scores (8.93 ± 3.66 mm) than PD control (PDCON) (16.5 ± 6.3 mm) on day 2 (p = 0.007). Male PDEX had decreased gluteus medius co-activation levels (p < 0.05) on day 2.DiscussionThe exercise program proved beneficial in reducing LBP during standing. There were changes in muscle activation patterns previously associated with LBP. Predisposing factors for LBP during standing were shown to change positively with appropriate exercise intervention.  相似文献

IntroductionArm support like gravity compensation may improve arm movements during stroke rehabilitation. It is unknown how gravity compensation affects muscle activation patterns during reach and retrieval movements. Since muscle activity during reach is represented by a component varying with movement velocity and a component supposedly counteracting gravity, we hypothesized that gravity compensation decreases the amplitude of muscle activity, but does not affect the pattern. To examine this, we compared muscle activity during well defined movements with and without gravity compensation in healthy elderly.MethodsTen subjects performed reach and retrieval movements with and without gravity compensation. Muscle activity of biceps, triceps, anterior, middle and posterior parts of deltoid and upper trapezius was compared between the two conditions.ResultsThe level of muscle activity was lower with gravity compensation in all muscles, reaching significance in biceps, anterior deltoid and trapezius (p ? 0.026). The muscle activation pattern did not differ between movements with and without gravity compensation (p ? 0.662).DiscussionGravity compensation only influenced the level of muscle activity but not the muscle activation pattern in terms of timing. Future studies should examine if the influence of gravity compensation is comparable for stroke patients. This may stimulate early and intensive training during rehabilitation.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to explore changes in the spatial distribution of erector spinae electromyography amplitude during static, sustained contractions and during contractions of increasing load. Surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were detected from nine healthy subjects using a grid of 13 × 5 electrodes placed unilaterally over the lumbar erector spinae musculature. Subjects stood in a 20° forward flexed position and performed: (1) six 20-s long contractions with loads ranging from 2.5 kg to 12.5 kg (2.5 kg increments) and (2) a 6 min sustained contraction with 7.5 kg load. Root mean square (RMS) and mean power spectral frequency (MNF) were computed from the recorded EMG signals. EMG RMS increased (P < 0.0001) and MNF remained constant during contractions of increased load. During the sustained contraction, MNF decreased (P < 0.0001) and RMS did not change over time. The centroid (center of activity) of the RMS map shifted caudally (P < 0.0001) with time during the sustained contraction but did not change with varying load. These results suggest a change in the distribution of erector spinae muscle activity with fatigue and a uniform distribution of muscle activation across loads.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe, interpret and compare the EMG activation patterns of ankle muscles – tibialis anterior (TA), peroneus longus (PL) and gastrocnemius lateralis (GL) – in volleyball players with and without ankle functional instability (FI) during landing after the blocking movement. Twenty-one players with FI (IG) and 19 controls (CG) were studied. The cycle of movement analyzed was the time period between 200 ms before and 200 ms after the time of impact determined by ground reaction forces. The variables were analyzed for two different phases: pre-landing (200 ms before impact) and post-landing (200 ms after impact). The RMS values and the timing of onset activity were calculated for the three studied muscles, in both periods and for both groups. The co-activation index for TA and PL, TA and GL were also calculated. Individuals with FI presented a lower RMS value pre-landing for PL (CG = 43.0 ± 22.0; IG = 26.2 ± 8.4, p < 0.05) and higher RMS value post-landing (CG = 47.5 ± 13.3; IG = 55.8 ± 21.6, p < 0.10). Besides that, in control group PL and GL activated first and simultaneously, and TA presented a later activation, while in subjects with FI all the three muscles activated simultaneously. There were no significant differences between groups for co-activation index. Thus, the rate of contraction between agonist and antagonist muscles is similar for subjects with and without FI but the activation individually was different. Volleyball players with functional instability of the ankle showed altered patterns of the muscles that play an important role in the stabilization of the foot–ankle complex during the performance of the blocking movement, to the detriment of the ligament complex, and this fact could explain the usual complaints in these subjects.  相似文献

Objectiveto evaluate hamstring flexibility in older adults.Materials and methodsa total of 177 subjects (13 men and 164 women) aged between 43 and 80 years old (mean age = 63.4 ± 6.7 years) who attended fitness classes were evaluated. The mean height was 161 ± 10 cm and the mean weight was 74 ± 5.6 kg. Hamstring flexibility was evaluated using the straight leg raise test.Resultsthe mean flexion in the right hip was 72° ± 13.2° and the mean flexion of the left hip was 72.4° ± 13.8°. No significant differences were found in the values obtained from the straight leg raise test in the left and right legs. For the right leg, 48.02% of the subjects’ values were within the normal range, while 28.81% showed grade I shortness, and 23.61% showed grade II shortness. For the left leg, 49.94% showed normal values, 29.94% showed grade I shortness, and 22.03% showed grade II shortness.Conclusionshalf of the adults and elderly individuals that took part in the present study had hamstring shortness, which increased in frequency with age.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo assess the association between muscle strength and early cardiovascular risk (CVR) markers in sedentary adults.Materials and methodsA total of 176 sedentary subjects aged 18-30 years were enrolled. Body mass index and fat percentage were calculated, and waist circumference, grip strength by dynamometry, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, and maximal oxygen uptake by VO2max were measured as CVR markers. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess associations between muscle strength and CVR markers.ResultsInverse correlations were found between muscle strength and adiposity (r = -.317; P = .001), waist circumference (r = -.309; P = .001), systolic blood pressure (r = -.401; P = .001), and mean arterial pressure (r = -.256; P = .001). Subjects with lower levels of muscle strength had a 5.79-fold (95% CI 1.57 to 9.34; P = .008) risk of having higher adiposity levels (≥ 25%) and a 9.67-fold (95% CI = 3.86 to 19.22; P < .001) risk of having lower physical capacity values for VO2max (≤ 31.5 mL/kg/min-1).ConclusionsIn sedentary adults, muscle strength is associated to early manifestations of CVR. It is suggested that muscle strength testing is added to routine measurement of VO2max and traditional risk factors for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular risk.  相似文献

The relative levels of pelvic floor muscle (PFM) activation and pressure generated by maximum voluntary PFM contractions were investigated in healthy continent women. The normal sequence of abdominal and PFM activation was determined.Fifteen women performed single and repeated maximum voluntary PFM contractions in supine, sitting and standing. PFM electromyographic (EMG) signals and associated intra-vaginal pressure data were recorded simultaneously. Surface EMG data were recorded from rectus abdominus (RA), external obliques (EO), internal obliques (IO) and transversus abdominus (TA).Abdominal and PFM EMG and intra-vaginal pressure amplitudes generated during voluntary PFM contractions were not different among the positions. Muscle activation sequence differed by position. In supine, EO activation preceded all other muscles by 27 ms (p = 0.043). In sitting, all of the muscles were activated simultaneously. In standing, RA and EO were activated 11 and 17 ms, respectively, prior to the PFMs and TA and IO were activated 10 and 12 ms, respectively, after the PFMs (p  0.001).The results suggest that women are able to perform equally strong PFM contractions in supine, sitting and standing, however the pattern of abdominal and PFM activation varies by position. These differences may be related to position-dependent urine leakage in women with stress incontinence.  相似文献

PurposeExternal knee moments are reliable to measure knee load but it does not take into account muscle activity. Considering that muscle co-activation increases compressive forces at the knee joint, identifying relationships between muscle co-activations and knee joint load would complement the investigation of the knee loading in subjects with knee osteoarthritis. The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between muscle co-activation and external knee moments during walking in subjects with medial knee osteoarthritis.Methods19 controls (11 males, aged 56.6 ± 5, and BMI 25.2 ± 3.3) and 25 subjects with medial knee osteoarthritis (12 males, aged 57.3 ± 5.3, and BMI 28.2 ± 4) were included in this study. Knee adduction and flexion moments, and co-activation (ratios and sums of quadriceps, hamstring, and gastrocnemius) were assessed during walking and compared between groups. The relationship between knee moments and co-activation was investigated in both groups.FindingsSubjects with knee osteoarthritis presented a moderate and strong correlation between co-activation (ratios and sums) and knee moments.InterpretationMuscle co-activation should be used to measure the contribution of quadriceps, hamstring, and gastrocnemius on knee loading. This information would cooperate to develop a more comprehensive approach of knee loading in this population.  相似文献

PurposeWe aimed to determine if state of bladder fullness affects pelvic floor muscle activation in healthy women without urogenital symptoms.Materials and methodsTwenty-three nulliparous, continent female participants were recruited to participate. Women were randomized to begin the protocol with either an empty (EF) or a full (FE) bladder. Tonic and maximal voluntary pelvic floor muscle electromyographic activity were measured in three states of bladder fullness (empty, full and uncomfortably full). Electromyographic signal amplitudes were compared among bladder states using separate two-way repeated-measures analyses of variance including bladder state and test order as main effects as well as the interaction between bladder state and test order.ResultsTonic activity of the pelvic floor muscles was significantly higher in the full and uncomfortably full bladder states compared to when the bladder was empty (p < 0.005). Maximum voluntary electromyographic activation was unaffected by state of bladder fullness (p = 0.713).ConclusionsConsistent with studies in which the bladder was filled through saline infusion, these results suggest that tonic activity of the PFMs is higher when the bladder is full compared to when it is empty. However once the bladder is moderately full, tonic PFM activity does not increase with increases in bladder volume.  相似文献

Cryotherapy and ankle bracing are often used in conjunction as a treatment for ankle injury. No studies have evaluated the combined effect of these treatments on reflex responses during inversion perturbation. This study examined the combined influence of ankle bracing and joint cooling on peroneus longus (PL) muscle response during ankle inversion. A 2 × 2 RM factorial design guided this study; the independent variables were: ankle brace condition (lace-up brace, control), and treatment (ice, control), and the dependent variables studied were PL stretch reflex latency (ms), and PL stretch reflex amplitude (% of max). Twenty-four healthy participants completed 5 trials of a sudden inversion perturbation to the ankle/foot complex under each ankle brace and cryotherapy treatment condition. No two-way interaction was observed between ankle brace and treatment conditions on PL latency (P = 0.283) and amplitude (P = 0.884). The ankle brace condition did not differ from control on PL latency and amplitude. Cooling the ankle joint did not alter PL latency or amplitude compared to the no-ice treatment. Ankle bracing combined with joint cooling does not have a deleterious effect on dynamic ankle joint stabilization during an inversion perturbation in normal subjects.  相似文献

ObjectivePedaling is widely used for rehabilitation of locomotion because it induces muscle activity very similar to locomotion. Afferent stimulation is important for the modulation of spinal reflexes. Furthermore, supraspinal modulation plays an important role in spinal plasticity induced by electrical stimulation. We, therefore, expected that active pedaling combined with electrical stimulation could induce strong after-effects on spinal reflexes.DesignTwelve healthy adults participated in this study. They were instructed to perform 7 min of pedaling. We applied electrical stimulation to the common peroneal nerve during the extension phase of the pedaling cycle. We assessed reciprocal inhibition using a soleus H-reflex conditioning-test paradigm. The magnitude of reciprocal inhibition was measured before, immediately after, 15 and 30 min after active pedaling alone, electrical stimulation alone and active pedaling combined with electrical stimulation (pedaling + ES).ResultsThe amount of reciprocal inhibition was significantly increased after pedaling + ES. The after-effect of pedaling + ES on reciprocal inhibition was more prominent and longer lasting compared with pedaling or electrical stimulation alone.ConclusionsPedaling + ES could induce stronger after-effects on spinal reciprocal inhibitory neurons compared with either intervention alone. Pedaling + ES might be used as a tool to improve locomotion and functional abnormalities in the patient with central nervous lesion.  相似文献
