The purpose of the present study was to determine how humans adjust leg stiffness over a range of hopping frequencies. Ten male subjects performed in place hopping on two legs, at three frequencies (1.5, 2.2, and 3.0 Hz). Leg stiffness, joint stiffness and touchdown joint angles were calculated from kinetic and/or kinematics data. Electromyographic activity (EMG) was recorded from six leg muscles. Leg stiffness increased with an increase in hopping frequency. Hip and knee stiffnesses were significantly greater at 3.0 Hz than at 1.5 Hz. There was no significant difference in ankle stiffness among the three hopping frequencies. Although there were significant differences in EMG activity among the three hopping frequencies, the largest was the 1.5 Hz, followed by the 2.2 Hz and then 3.0 Hz. The subjects landed with a straighter leg (both hip and knee were extended more) with increased hopping frequency. These results suggest that over the range of hopping frequencies we evaluated, humans adjust leg stiffness by altering hip and knee stiffness. This is accomplished by extending the touchdown joint angles rather than by altering neural activity.  相似文献

The aim of the current study was to investigate potential age-related differences in neural regulation strategies during maximal and sub-maximal hopping. Thirty-two boys from three different age groups (9-, 12- and 15-years), completed trials of both maximal and sub maximal hopping, and based on contact and flight times, measures of reactive strength index (RSI = jump height/contact time) and leg stiffness (peak ground reaction force/peak displacement of centre of mass) were collected respectively. During all trials, surface electromyograms (EMG) were recorded from four different muscle sites of the dominant lower limb, during 100 ms pre-ground contact, and then four subsequent stretch reflex phases: background muscle activity (0-30 ms), short-latency stretch reflex (31-60 ms), intermediate15 latency stretch reflex 61-90 ms and long-latency stretch reflex (91-120 ms). Reactive strength index and leg stiffness were measured during the hopping trials. During maximal hopping, both 12- and 15-year olds produced significantly greater RSI (P < 0.02) than 9-year olds, with 15-year olds utilising significantly greater soleus muscle activity during the 100 ms prior to ground contact than the younger age groups (P < 0.01). During sub-maximal hopping, 15-year olds produced significantly greater absolute leg stiffness than both 12- and 9-year olds (P < 0.01), with 9-year olds producing significantly less soleus muscle activity during the 31-60 ms time phase. For all age groups, sub-maximal hopping was associated with significantly greater background muscle activity and short-latency stretch reflex activity in the soleus and vastus lateralis, when compared to maximal hopping (P < 0.001). Results suggest that as children mature, they become more reliant on supra-spinal feed forward input and short latency stretch reflexes to regulate greater levels of leg stiffness and RSI when hopping.  相似文献

It is not currently known how the mechanical properties of human tendons change with maturation in the two sexes. To address this, the stiffness and Young's modulus of the patellar tendon were measured in men, women, boys and girls (each group, n=10). Patellar tendon force (Fpt) was calculated from the measured joint moment during a ramped voluntary isometric knee extension contraction, the antagonist knee extensor muscle co-activation quantified from its electromyographical activity, and the patellar tendon moment arm measured from magnetic resonance images. Tendon elongation was imaged using the sagittal-plane ultrasound scans throughout the contraction. Tendon cross-sectional area was measured at rest from ultrasound scans in the transverse plane. Maximal Fpt and tendon elongation were (mean±SE) 5453±307 N and 5±0.5 mm for men, 3877±307 N and 4.9±0.6 mm for women, 2017±170 N and 6.2±0.5 mm for boys and 2169±182 N and 5.9±0.7 mm for girls. In all groups, tendon stiffness and Young's modulus were examined at the level that corresponded to the maximal 30% of the weakest participant's Fpt and stress, respectively; these were 925–1321 N and 11.5–16.5 MPa, respectively. Stiffness was 94% greater in men than boys and 84% greater in women than girls (p<0.01), with no differences between men and women, or boys and girls (men 1076±87 N/mm; women 1030±139 N/mm; boys 555±71 N/mm and girls 561.5±57.4 N/mm). Young's modulus was 99% greater in men than boys (p<0.01), and 66% greater in women than girls (p<0.05). There were no differences in modulus between men and women, or boys and girls (men 597±49 MPa; women 549±70 MPa; boys 255±42 MPa and girls 302±33 MPa). These findings indicate that the mechanical stiffness of tendon increases with maturation due to an increased Young's modulus and, in females due to a greater increase in tendon cross-sectional area than tendon length.  相似文献

Most biomechanical studies into changing direction focus on final contact (FC), whilst limited research has examined penultimate contact (PEN). The aim of this study was to explore the kinematic and kinetic differences between PEN and FC of cutting and pivoting in 22 female soccer players (mean ± SD; age: 21 ± 3.1 years, height: 1.68 ± 0.07 m, mass: 58.9 ± 7.3 kg). Furthermore, the study investigated whether horizontal force–time characteristics during PEN were related to peak knee abduction moments during FC. Three dimensional motion analyses of cutting and pivoting on the right leg were performed using Qualysis ‘Proreflex’ infrared cameras (240 Hz). Ground reaction forces (GRF) were collected from two AMTI force platforms (1200 Hz) to examine PEN and FC. Both manoeuvres involved significantly (P < 0.05) greater knee joint flexion angles, peak horizontal GRF, but lower average horizontal GRF during PEN compared to FC. Average horizontal GRF during PEN (R = −0.569, R2 = 32%, P = 0.006) and average horizontal GRF ratio (R = 0.466, R2 = 22%, P = 0.029) were significantly related to peak knee abduction moments during the FC of cutting and pivoting, respectively. The results indicate PEN during pre-planned changing direction helps reduce loading on the turning leg where there is greater risk of injuries to knee ligaments.  相似文献

Background: Compared with visual torque-onset-detection (TOD), threshold-based TOD produces onset bias, which increases with lower torques or rates of torque development (RTD). Purpose: To compare the effects of differential TOD-bias on common contractile parameters in two torque-disparate groups. Methods: Fifteen boys and 12 men performed maximal, explosive, isometric knee-extensions. Torque and EMG were recorded for each contraction. Best contractions were selected by peak torque (MVC) and peak RTD. Visual-TOD-based torque-time traces, electromechanical delays (EMD), and times to peak RTD (tRTD) were compared with corresponding data derived from fixed 4-N m- and relative 5%MVC-thresholds. Results: The 5%MVC TOD-biases were similar for boys and men, but the corresponding 4-N m-based biases were markedly different (40.3 ± 14.1 vs. 18.4 ± 7.1 ms, respectively; p < 0.001). Boys–men EMD differences were most affected, increasing from 5.0 ms (visual) to 26.9 ms (4 N m; p < 0.01). Men’s visually-based torque kinetics tended to be faster than the boys’ (NS), but the 4-N m-based kinetics erroneously depicted the boys as being much faster to any given %MVC (p < 0.001). Conclusions: When comparing contractile properties of dissimilar groups, e.g., children vs. adults, threshold-based TOD methods can misrepresent reality and lead to erroneous conclusions. Relative-thresholds (e.g., 5% MVC) still introduce error, but group-comparisons are not confounded.  相似文献

The purpose of the current study in combination with our previous published data (Arampatzis et al., 2007) was to examine the effects of a controlled modulation of strain magnitude and strain frequency applied to the Achilles tendon on the plasticity of tendon mechanical and morphological properties. Eleven male adults (23.9±2.2 yr) participated in the study. The participants exercised one leg at low magnitude tendon strain (2.97±0.47%), and the other leg at high tendon strain magnitude (4.72±1.08%) of similar frequency (0.5 Hz, 1 s loading, 1 s relaxation) and exercise volume (integral of the plantar flexion moment over time) for 14 weeks, 4 days per week, 5 sets per session. The exercise volume was similar to the intervention of our earlier study (0.17 Hz frequency; 3 s loading, 3 s relaxation) allowing a direct comparison of the results. Before and after the intervention ankle joint moment has been measured by a dynamometer, tendon–aponeurosis elongation by ultrasound and cross-sectional area of the Achilles tendon by magnet resonance images (MRI). We found a decrease in strain at a given tendon force, an increase in tendon–aponeurosis stiffness and tendon elastic modulus of the Achilles tendon only in the leg exercised at high strain magnitude. The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the Achilles tendon did not show any statistically significant (P>0.05) differences to the pre-exercise values in both legs. The results indicate a superior improvement in tendon properties (stiffness, elastic modulus and CSA) at the low frequency (0.17 Hz) compared to the high strain frequency (0.5 Hz) protocol. These findings provide evidence that the strain magnitude applied to the Achilles tendon should exceed the value, which occurs during habitual activities to trigger adaptational effects and that higher tendon strain duration per contraction leads to superior tendon adaptational responses.  相似文献

PurposeVibratory stimuli enhance muscle activity and may be used for rehabilitation and performance enhancement. Efficacy of vibration varies with the frequency of stimulation, but the optimal frequency is unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 30 Hz and 60 Hz local muscle vibration (LMV) on quadriceps function.MethodsTwenty healthy volunteers (age = 20.4 ± 1.4 years, mass = 68.1 ± 11.0 kg, height = 170.1 ± 8.8 cm, males = 9) participated. Isometric knee extensor peak torque (PT), rate of torque development (RTD), and electromyography (EMG) of the quadriceps were assessed followed by one of the three LMV treatments (30 Hz, 60 Hz, control) applied under voluntary contraction, and again immediately, 5, 15, and 30 min post-treatment in three counterbalanced sessions. Dependent variables were analyzed using condition by time repeated-measures ANOVA.ResultsThe condition × time interaction was significant for EMG amplitude (p = 0.001), but not for PT (p = 0.324) or RTD (p = 0.425). The increase in EMG amplitude following 30 Hz LMV was significantly greater than 60 Hz LMV and control.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that 30 Hz LMV may elicit an improvement in quadriceps activation and could be used to treat quadriceps dysfunction resulting from knee pathologies.  相似文献

The aim of this preliminary study was to examine the validity of a recently-introduced tool (MyotonPRO) for the assessment of mechanical parameters of the main lower extremity muscles in patients with chronic stroke. Thigh and shank muscles of 20 stroke patients with limited hypertonia (11 men and 9 women; mean age: 52 ± 11 yrs) and 20 healthy controls (11 men and 9 women; mean age: 53 ± 10 yrs) were bilaterally evaluated with (i) MyotonPRO for muscle stiffness, tone and elasticity, (ii) ultrasonography for muscle and subcutaneous thickness, and (iii) dynamometry for isometric muscle strength. MyotonPRO parameters of stroke patients were reassessed a week later (inter-day test-retest design). For all the investigated muscles, MyotonPRO variables did not differ between the more affected and the less affected side of patients (P > 0.05 for main side effect), and neither differed between patients and controls (P > 0.05 for main group effect), except for gastrocnemius medialis stiffness that was higher in patients (300 ± 51 N/m) than in controls (281 ± 29 N/m; P < 0.05). Thigh muscle stiffness was negatively correlated to subcutaneous thickness (r = −0.84 for the vastus lateralis; P < 0.001), while only tibialis anterior stiffness and tone correlated positively with muscle thickness (both r = 0.46; P < 0.01). Test-retest reliability of MyotonPRO parameters was adequate, except for muscle elasticity. The validity of MyotonPRO for the evaluation of thigh muscles in chronic stroke patients is partially challenged by the poor discriminant ability and by the considerable impact of subcutaneous tissue thickness (sex-dependent) on mechanical parameters. The potential validity of MyotonPRO for the assessment of shank muscles requires further investigation.  相似文献

Studies on the effects of consumption of fruits, vegetables, and seaweeds on the incidence of pancreatic cancer are not conclusive. We examined the association (if any) between the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and seaweeds and the risk of pancreatic cancer in Japan. Data from 32,859 participants registered in the Ohsaki National Health Insurance Cohort Study who were 40–79 years old and free of cancer at baseline were analyzed. Consumption of fruits, vegetables, and seaweeds was assessed at baseline using a self-administered food frequency questionnaire (containing 40 items). Incidences of pancreatic cancer were identified by computer linkage with the Miyagi Prefectural Cancer Registry. During 11 years of follow-up, 137 pancreatic cancers (67 men and 70 women) were identified. The hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) of pancreatic cancer risk for the highest versus the lowest tertile were 0.82 (0.40–1.68, trend P = 0.57) in men and 0.64 (0.35–1.20, trend P = 0.22) in women for total consumption of fruits, 0.89 (0.46–1.73, trend P = 0.76) in men and 0.67 (0.33–1.35, trend P = 0.23) in women for total consumption of vegetables, and 0.92 (0.46–1.84, trend P = 0.81) in men for consumption of seaweeds (results for the consumption of seaweeds in women were not analyzed because of poor reliability), respectively. Total consumption of fruits, vegetables, and seaweeds was not associated with a reduced risk of pancreatic cancer.  相似文献

Background and aimPrevious evidence has suggested an association between selenium and cardiovascular disease, which is main outcome of metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to examine possible correlation between selenium nutritional status and metabolic risk factors in men with visceral obesity.MethodsPlasma samples were collected from 123 Indonesian men with visceral obesity. Their metabolic risk factors and selenium nutritional status were analyzed. The eligible subjects (n = 78) were stratified according to the International Diabetes Federation: obese, obese plus one component, and obese plus two components or more. Obese plus two components or more were diagnostic criteria of metabolic syndrome. Pearson's correlation was performed to examine the correlation in each group.ResultsIn the obese group, selenium positively correlated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (r = 0.390, P < 0.05) and with fatty acid binding protein-4 (FABP4) (r = 0.474, P < 0.05); glutathione peroxidase-3 (GPx3) activity was inversely correlated with FABP4 (r = ?467, P < 0.05). In the obese plus one component group, GPx3 activity positively correlated with HDL cholesterol (r = 0.413, P < 0.05). In the metabolic syndrome group, selenium negatively correlated with monocytes chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 (r = ?0.429, P < 0.05).ConclusionsThese results show that the association between selenium nutritional status and metabolic risk factors is limited to particular group of obese men with or without metabolic syndrome.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to examine group differences in muscle activation onset of the vastus medialis (VM) in relation to the vastus lateralis (VL) and pain level during stair ascent in females with patellofemoral pain (PFP) who maintain high and moderate levels of physical activity; to determine the association between physical activity level and muscle activation onset. Forty-three females with PFP and thirty-eight pain-free females were recruited and divided into four groups based on their level of physical activity: females with PFP (n = 26) and pain-free females (n = 26) who practiced a moderate level of physical activity and females with PFP (n = 17) and pain-free females (n = 12) who practiced an intense amount of physical activity. Participants were asked to ascend a seven-step staircase and the VM and VL activation onset was determined. Females with PFP who practiced high level of physical activity demonstrated delayed onset of VM (4.06 ms) compared to healthy females (−14.4 ms). Conversely, females with PFP who practiced moderate level of physical activity did not present VM delay (−2.48 ms) in comparison to healthy females (−9.89 ms). Furthermore, physical activity significantly correlated to the muscle activation onset difference (p = 0.005; R = 0.60). These findings may explain why controversial results regarding VM and VL muscle activation onset have been found.  相似文献

Contemporary methods of atrial flutter (AFL), atrial tachycardia (AT), and atrial fibrillation (AF) monitoring, although superior to the standard 12-lead ECG and symptom-based monitoring, are unable to accurately discriminate between AF, AFL and AT. Thus, there is a need to develop accurate, automated, and comprehensive atrial arrhythmia detection algorithms using standard ECG recorders. To this end, we have developed a sensitive and real-time realizable algorithm for accurate AFL and AT detection using any standard electrocardiographic recording. Our novel method for automatic detection of atrial flutter and atrial tachycardia uses a Bayesian approach followed by a high resolution time–frequency spectrum. We find the TQ interval of the electrocardiogram (ECG) corresponding to atrial activity by using a particle filter (PF), and analyze the atrial activity with a high resolution time–frequency spectral method: variable frequency complex demodulation (VFCDM). The rationale for using a high-resolution time–frequency algorithm is that our approach tracks the time-varying fundamental frequency of atrial activity, where AT is within 2.0–4.0 Hz, AFL is within 4.0–5.3 Hz and NSR is found at frequencies less than 2.0 Hz. For classifications of AFL (n = 22), AT (n = 10) and normal sinus rhythms (NSR) (n = 29), we found that our approach resulted in accuracies of 0.89, 0.87 and 0.91, respectively; the overall accuracy was 0.88.  相似文献

Activity monitors provide an objective mechanism for evaluating patient function. It is unclear what similarities or unique information may be yielded using different analyses. Fifteen patients scheduled to undergo shoulder arthroplasty and fifteen matched control subjects wore tri-axial accelerometer activity monitors bilaterally at the lower (wrist) and upper (biceps) arm for 3 days. Measures of central tendency, variance, sample entropy, and asymmetry were calculated. A novel technique to evaluate time distribution of activity intensity was also performed. Within both groups there was a difference in central tendency and variance when comparing dominant and non-dominant limbs for both the lower (Controls: Mean Activity, P < 0.001; Max Activity, P < 0.001; Patients: Mean Activity, P = 0.044; Max Activity, P = 0.009) and upper (Controls: Mean Activity, P < 0.001; Max Activity, P = 0.046; Patients: Mean Activity, P = 0.002; Max Activity, P = 0.049) arm. Within group differences were also present for lower arm entropy in both groups (Controls, P < 0.001; Patients P = 0.041), and at the upper arm for patients (P = 0.003). There were differences between groups for the asymmetry index for both the lower (P = 0.033) and upper arm (P = 0.005), and maximum activity level of the lower arm (P = 0.05). Between group differences were present for time distribution of activity intensity, as the involved upper arm of patients was inactive for a greater time than controls (P = 0.013). These results highlight unique information provided by multiple analysis methods, and include a novel approach of evaluating the distribution of time spent across variable intensity activities.  相似文献

Background: Previous literature has shown in vivo changes in muscle-tendon interaction during exhaustive stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) exercise. It is unclear whether these changes in muscle-tendon length during exhaustive SSC exercise are associated with changes in mechanical efficiency (ME). The purpose of the study was to investigate whether changes in platarflexor contractile component (CC) length, tendon length, and changes in plantarflexor muscle activity could explain reduction in ME during exhaustive SSC exercise. Methods: Eight males participated in an exhaustive hopping task to fatigue. Mechanical work and energy expenditure were calculated at different time-points during the hopping task. Furthermore, hopping kinetics and kinematics, medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle activity, and in vivo ultrasound of the MG were also collected at different time-points throughout the hopping task. Results: ME did not change during the hopping protocol despite shorter tendon and longer CC lengths as subjects approached exhaustion. Percent decreases in pennation angle and muscle thickness were most strongly correlated to time to exhaustion (r = 0.94, p  0.05; r = 0.87, p  0.05; respectively). Percent changes in CC length change and pennation angle were strongly correlated to percent decrease in maximal voluntary isometric plantarflexion (MVIP) force (r = −0.71, p  0.04; r = 0.70, p  0.05; respectively). Braking/push-off EMG ratio increased from initial pre-fatigue values to all other time points showing neuromuscular adaptations to altered muscle lengths. Conclusion: Findings from the current study suggest that changes in CC and tendon lengths occur during repetitive hopping to exhaustion, with the amount change strongly related to time to exhaustion. ME of hopping remained unchanged in the presence of altered CC and tendon lengths.  相似文献

AimsWe tested the hypothesis that body fat percentage determines cardiac sympathovagal balance in healthy subjects.Main methodsHeart rate variability (HRV) measurements were made of the standard deviation of the normal–normal RR intervals (SDNN) and the low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio, from time domain and fast Fourier transform spectral analysis of electrocardiogram RR intervals during trials of uncontrolled and controlled (paced) breathing at 0.2 Hz. Body fat percentage was measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometric (DEXA) scanning. Significance of differences between uncontrolled and controlled (paced) breathing was determined by analysis of variance and correlations between body fat percentage and HRV measurements by Pearson's coefficient at P < 0.05.Key findingsPercent body fat was negatively correlated with LF/HF during the uncontrolled breathing (r = ? 0.56, two-tailed P < 0.05, one-tailed P < 0.01) but not during the paced breathing trial (r = ? 0.34, (P > 0.1).SignificanceWe conclude that sympathetic activity produced by paced breathing at 0.2 Hz can obscure the relationship between body fat percentage and sympathovagal balance and that high body fat percentage may be associated with low sympathetic modulation of the heart rate in healthy adolescent/young adult males.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of sex composition of the group of lambs before puberty on later sexual performance in Awassi ram lambs. Thirteen Awassi ram lambs of the same age were raised in either all-male group (n = 7) or in a group mixed with females (n = 6) from weaning to puberty. Blood samples, body weights (BW) and scrotal circumferences (SC) of ram lambs were recorded between eight and 10 months of age. Sexual performance testing was performed at 9 months of age by individually exposing ram lambs to oestrous females on five occasions. Body weight and SC were greater (P < 0.01) in the all-male compared with the mixed group. Plasma testosterone concentrations were not influenced (P > 0.05) by treatment. Plasma testosterone concentrations were significantly correlated (P  0.05) with BW (r = 0.3) and SC (r = 0.4). No treatment effects were detected regarding bouts of leg-kicking. Bouts of anogenital sniffing, the frequency of mount attempts and mounting frequency were greater (P < 0.05) in the all-male group. Even though the frequency of raising the fat tail of females was similar between the two treatments, the mixed group tended to be (P = 0.08) more efficient in doing so than the all-male group (higher tail raising/mount). Results of the current study indicate that mixing groups of ram and ewe lambs before puberty may be insufficient to improve later sexual performance of ram lambs.  相似文献

Eight castrated male lambs (35 ± 4 kg live weight), fed a basal diet of kikuyu grass hay, were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin Square experiment with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to evaluate the effect of supplemental feeding frequency and source of rumen degradable N on intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and microbial protein yield. Treatments were supplementation with cassava meal plus calcium caseinate or cassava meal plus urea offered at a rate of 7 g/kg live weight daily in one or two meals per day. Lambs were fed twice daily in such manner to allow ad libitum comsumption of forage. There was significant feeding frequency by N source interaction on variables of intake. In general, intake of feed components was higher (P  0.05) by lambs offered the caseinate-supplement twice daily over intake observed in lambs given the others diet treatments. Digestibility of feed components was neither affected by supplemental N source (DM, P = 0.541; OM, P = 0.585; NDF, P = 0.828) nor by feeding frequency (DM, P = 0.122; OM, P = 0.175; NDF, P = 0.591). Urinary excretion of N increased (P  0.05) in lambs supplemented twice daily whereas N retention was similar for all treatments (N source, P = 0.748; feeding frequency, P = 0.418). Microbial protein entering into the small intestine was affected by the interaction between feeding frequency and N source such as an increasing (P < 0.10) in this variable was observed when lambs received the caseinate but not the urea supplement twice daily. Efficiency of microbial protein synthesis, however, was not affected by treatments (N source, P = 0.588; feeding frequency, P = 0.334). Rumen pH averaged 6.70 and it was neither affected by N source (P = 0.827) nor by feeding frequency (P = 0.740). Ruminal concentration of ammonia N was not affected by feeding frequency (P = 0.144) while it increased (P < 0.05) when urea rather than caseinate was the supplemental N source (mean of 7.61 mg/dl vs. 6.00 mg/dl). Concentration of sugars in rumen fluid was higher (P  0.05) in lambs supplemented once a day compared to twice daily (mean of 49.4 mg/dl vs. 34.4 mg/dl) for both N sources. A significant (P  0.05) N source by feeding frequency interaction effect was observed for ruminal concentrations of α-amino N compounds. In urea treatment α-amino N concentration increased (P  0.05) in lambs receiving the supplement twice daily compared to once a day (mean of 4.59 mg/dl vs. 3.70 mg/dl) while in caseinate treatment it was higher (P  0.05) in lambs offered the supplement in one meal per day compared to twice daily (mean of 5.29 mg/dl vs. 4.07 mg/dl). In conclusion, for ruminants fed a tropical grass-based diet, starch-rich supplement containing non-protein N as N source may be offered only once a day whereas the supply of nutrients may be improved if degradable true protein is included as N source and supplement is offered in two meals per day.  相似文献

Some human behaviors, including aggression and activity level, differ on average for males and females. Here we report findings from two studies investigating possible relations between prenatal androgen and children's aggression and activity level. For study 1, aggression and activity level scores for 43 girls and 38 boys, aged 4 to 11 years, with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH, a genetic condition causing increased adrenal androgen production beginning prenatally) were compared to those of similarly-aged, unaffected relatives (41 girls, 31 boys). Girls with CAH scored higher on aggression than unaffected girls, d = 0.69, and unaffected boys scored higher on activity level than unaffected girls, d = 0.50. No other group differences were significant. For study 2, the relationship of amniotic fluid testosterone to aggression and activity level was investigated in typically-developing children (48 girls, 44 boys), aged 3 to 5 years. Boys scored higher than girls on aggression, d = 0.41, and activity level, d = 0.50. However, amniotic fluid testosterone was not a significant predictor of aggression or activity level for either sex. The results of the two studies provide some support for an influence of prenatal androgen exposure on children's aggressive behavior, but not activity level. The within-sex variation in amniotic fluid testosterone may not be sufficient to allow reliable assessment of relations to aggression or activity level.  相似文献

The preparatory motion of a defensive motion in contact sport such as basketball should be small and involve landing on both feet for strict time and motion constraints. We thus proposed the movement creating a unweighted state. Ten basketball players performed a choice reaction sidestepping task with and without the voluntary, continuous vertical fluctuation movement. The results indicated that the preparatory movement shortened the time of their sidestep initiation (301 vs. 314 ms, p = 0.011) and reaching performance (883 vs. 910 ms, p = 0.018) but did not increase their peak ground reaction force or movement velocity. The mechanism of the improvement was estimated to be the following: in the preparation phase, the vertical body fluctuation created the force fluctuation; after the direction signal, the unweighted state can shorten the time required to initiate the sidestepping (unweighted: 279 ms; weighted: 322 ms, p = 0.002); around the initiation phase, the dropping down of the body and weighted state can contribute to the reaching performance. We conducted additional experiment investigating muscle–tendon-complex dynamics and muscle activity using ultrasound device and electromyography. The result suggests that the building up of active state of muscle might explain the improvement of sidestepping performance.  相似文献

Valgus knee angle (VKA) maybe a predictor of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Pre-programmed muscle activation strategies may exist which could contribute to the larger VKA displayed in women compared to men. The current study examined the relationship between the peak VKA and preparatory muscle activity. Twenty-one adults were asked to perform five trials of a forward hop. Lower extremity kinematics and surface EMG were recorded. Peak VKA and EMG from 100 ms prior to ground contact were used in the data analyses. Three multiple linear regressions, where muscle activity was regressed upon the peak VKA, were run using subsets (female, male, and male/female) of the sample. Partial regression coefficients were considered significant at P  0.05. When female subjects were exclusively included in the model, a higher peak VKA was associated with increased preparatory vastus lateralis and lateral hamstring activity, while a lower VKA was associated with increased preparatory vastus medialis activity (P  0.05). When both genders and males alone were considered, preparatory activity was not associated with peak VKA (P  0.05). Neuromuscular training promoting equal preparatory muscle activity in the medial-to-lateral quadriceps and hamstrings may reduce the incidence of ACL injuries in females.  相似文献
