To determine the effect and underlying mechanisms of exercise training and the influence of age on the skin blood flow (SkBF) response to exercise in a hot environment, 22 young (Y; 18-30 yr) and 21 older (O; 61-78 yr) men were assigned to 16 wk of aerobic (A; YA, n = 8; OA, n = 11), resistance (R; YR, n = 7; OR, n = 3), or no training (C; YC, n = 7; OC, n = 7). Before and after treatment, subjects exercised at 60% of maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max) on a cycle ergometer for 60 min at 36 degrees C. Cutaneous vascular conductance, defined as SkBF divided by mean arterial pressure, was monitored at control (vasoconstriction intact) and bretylium-treated (vasoconstriction blocked) sites on the forearm using laser-Doppler flowmetry. Forearm vascular conductance was calculated as forearm blood flow (venous occlusion plethysmography) divided by mean arterial pressure. Esophageal and skin temperatures were recorded. Only aerobic training (functionally defined a priori as a 5% or greater increase in VO2 max) produced a decrease in the mean body temperature threshold for increasing forearm vascular conductance (36.89 +/- 0.08 to 36.63 +/- 0.08 degrees C, P < 0.003) and cutaneous vascular conductance (36.91 +/- 0.08 to 36.65 +/- 0.08 degrees C, P < 0.004). Similar thresholds between control and bretylium-treated sites indicated that the decrease was mediated through the active vasodilator system. This shift was more pronounced in the older men who presented greater training-induced increases in VO2 max than did the young men (22 and 9%, respectively). In summary, older men improved their SkBF response to exercise-heat stress through the effect of aerobic training on the cutaneous vasodilator system.  相似文献

Increased participation of aged individuals in athletics warrants basic research focused on delineating age-related changes in performance variables. On the basis of potential age-related declines in aerobic enzyme activities and a shift in the expression of myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms, we hypothesized that maximal lactate steady-state (MLSS) exercise intensity would be altered as a function of age. Three age groups [young athletes (YA), 25.9 +/- 1.0 yr, middle-age athletes (MA), 43.2 +/- 1.0 yr, and older athletes (OA), 64.6 +/- 2.7 yr] of male, competitive cyclists and triathletes matched for training intensity and duration were studied. Subjects performed a maximal O2 consumption (V(o2 max)) test followed by a series of 30-min exercise trials to determine MLSS. A muscle biopsy of the vastus lateralis was procured on a separate visit. There were differences (P < 0.05) in V(o2 max) among all age groups (YA = 67.7 +/- 1.2 ml x kg-1x min-1, MA = 56.0 +/- 2.6 ml x kg-1x min-1, OA = 47.0 +/- 2.6 ml x kg-1 x min-1). When expressed as a percentage of V(o2 max), there was also an age-related decrease (P < 0.05) in the relative MLSS exercise intensity (YA = 80.8 +/- 0.9%, MA = 76.1 +/- 1.4%, OA = 69.9 +/- 1.5%). There were no significant age-related changes in citrate synthase activity or MHC isoform profile. The hypothesis is supported as there is an age-related decline in MLSS exercise intensity in athletes matched for training intensity and duration. Although type I MHC isoform, combined with age, is helpful in predicting (r = 0.76, P < 0.05) relative MLSS intensity, it does not explain the age-related decline in MLSS.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that women would demonstrate lower cardiovagal baroreflex gain compared with men. If so, we further hypothesized that the lower cardiovagal baroreflex gain in women would be associated with their lower aerobic fitness and higher body fat percentage compared with men. To accomplish this, we measured cardiovagal baroreflex gain (modified Oxford technique) in sedentary, nonobese (body mass index < 25 kg/m2) men (age = 26.0 +/- 2.1 yr, n = 11) and women (age = 26.9 +/- 1.6 yr, n = 14). Resting R-R interval and diastolic blood pressure were similar in the two groups, but systolic blood pressure was lower (P < 0.05) in the women. Cardiovagal baroreflex gain was significantly lower in the women compared with the men (13.3 +/- 1.5 vs. 20.0 +/- 2.8 ms/mmHg, P < 0.05). The lower cardiovagal baroreflex gain in the women was not related (P > 0.05) to their lower aerobic fitness and was only marginally related to their higher body fat percentage (r = -0.34, P < 0.05). There were no gender differences in the threshold and saturation, operating range, or operating point (all P > 0.05), although the operating point fell significantly to left (i.e., at a lower systolic blood pressure) compared with men. Therefore, the findings of this study suggest that the gain of the cardiovagal baroreflex is reduced whereas other parameters were similar in women compared with men. The mechanisms responsible for the reduced cardiovagal baroreflex gain remain unclear.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of short-term exercise training on insulin-responsive glucose transporter (GLUT-4) concentration and insulin sensitivity in young and older individuals. Young and older women [22.4 +/- 0.8 (SE) yr, n = 9; and 60.9 +/- 1. 0 yr, n = 10] and men (20.9 +/- 0.9, n = 9; 56.5 +/- 1.9 yr, n = 8), respectively, were studied before and after 7 consecutive days of exercise training (1 h/day, approximately 75% maximal oxygen uptake). The older groups had more adipose tissue, increased central adiposity, and a lower maximal oxygen uptake. Despite these differences, increases in whole body insulin action (insulin sensitivity index, determined with an intravenous glucose tolerance test and minimal-model analysis) with training were similar regardless of age, in both the women and men (mean increase of 2.2 +/- 0.3-fold). This was accompanied by similar relative increases in muscle (vastus lateralis) GLUT-4 protein concentration, irrespective of age (mean increase of 3.1 +/- 0.7-fold). Body mass did not change with training in any of the groups. These data suggest that older human skeletal muscle retains the ability to rapidly increase muscle GLUT-4 and improve insulin action with endurance training.  相似文献

Based mostly on cross-sectional data, it has been suggested that aerobic training may decrease lower body negative pressure (LBNP) tolerance through a hypothesized attenuation in both high- and low-pressure baroreflex gain. An experimental group (EXP) of eight male subjects [22.1 +/- 1.4 (SD) yr] underwent a 10-wk treadmill and cycle ergometer training program, which resulted in a 21% increase in maximal O2 uptake (VO2 max), 45.7 +/- 1.5 vs. 55.2 +/- 1.7 (SE) ml.kg-1.min-1; P less than 0.05]. A control group, (CON; n = 7; 27.3 +/- 5.7 yr), which did not undergo training, had no significant changes in VO2 max (49.4 +/- 3.3 vs. 48.8 +/- 3.2 ml.kg-1.min-1). Before and after training the EXP and CON groups participated in LBNP tolerance tests (terminated at presyncope) and neck pressure-suction testing (to describe the carotid sinus-heart rate baroreflex). LBNP tolerance, as defined by three different indexes, and carotid sinus-heart rate baroreflex gain were not altered in either group after training. Furthermore, there were no changes in LBNP heart rate, blood pressure, leg circumference, forearm blood flow, or forearm vascular resistance responses at any level of LBNP challenge after training. In conclusion, 10 wk of aerobic training did not change LBNP tolerance or alter the reflex cardiovascular compensatory mechanisms activated during LBNP.  相似文献

Collagen content and cross-linking are believed to be major determinants of tendon structural integrity and function. Sex and chronic resistance training have been shown to alter tendon function and may also alter the key structural features of tendon. Patellar tendon biopsies were taken from untrained men [n = 8, 1 repetition maximum (RM) = 53 +/- 3 kg], untrained women (n = 8, 1 RM = 29 +/- 2 kg), and resistance-trained (10 +/- 1 yr of training) men (n = 8, 1 RM = 71 +/- 6 kg). Biopsies were analyzed for dry mass, collagen content, and collagen cross-linking (hydroxylysylpyridinoline). We hypothesized that these elements of tendon structure would be lower in women than men, whereas chronic resistance training would increase these parameters in men. Tendon dry mass was significantly lower in women than men (343 +/- 5 vs. 376 +/- 8 microg dry mass/mg tendon wet wt, P < 0.01) and was not influenced by chronic resistance training (P > 0.05). The lower tendon dry mass in women tended to reduce (P = 0.08) collagen content per tendon wet weight. Collagen content of the tendon dry mass was not influenced by sex or resistance training (P > 0.05). Similarly, cross-linking of collagen was unaltered (P > 0.05) by sex or training. Although sex alters the water content of patellar tendon tissue, any changes in tendon function with sex or chronic resistance training in men do not appear to be explained by alterations in collagen content or cross-linking of collagen within the dry mass component of the tendon.  相似文献

A physiological strain index (PSI) based on heart rate (HR) and rectal temperature (Tre) was recently suggested to evaluate exercise-heat stress in humans. The purpose of this study was to adjust PSI for rats and to evaluate this index at different levels of heat acclimation and training. The corrections of HR and Tre to modify the index for rats are as follows: PSI = 5 (Tre t - Tre 0). (41.5 - Tre 0)-1 + 5 (HRt - HR0). (550 - HR0)-1, where HRt and Tre t are simultaneous measurements taken at any time during the exposure and HR0 and Tre 0 are the initial measurements. The adjusted PSI was applied to five groups (n = 11-14 per group) of acclimated rats (control and 2, 5, 10, and 30 days) exposed for 70 min to a hot climate [40 degrees C, 20% relative humidity (RH)]. A separate database representing two groups of acclimated or trained rats was also used and involved 20 min of low-intensity exercise (O2 consumption approximately 50 ml. min-1. kg-1) at three different climates: normothermic (24 degrees C, 40% RH), hot-wet (35 degrees C, 70% RH), and hot-dry (40 degrees C, 20% RH). In normothermia, rats also performed moderate exercise (O2 consumption approximately 60 ml. min-1. kg-1). The adjusted PSI differentiated among acclimation levels and significantly discriminated among all exposures during low-intensity exercise (P < 0.05). Numerous studies have shown that the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone have multiple effects on the vasculature. Thus our goal was to investigate the effects of estrogen and progesterone on calf venous compliance by looking for cyclic changes during the early follicular, ovulatory, and midluteal phases of the menstrual cycle and during high and low hormone phases of oral contraceptive use. Additionally, we wanted to compare the venous compliance of normally menstruating women, oral contraceptive users, and men. We studied eight normally menstruating women (23 +/- 1 yr of age) during the early follicular, ovulatory, and midluteal phases of the menstrual cycle. Nine triphasic oral contraceptive users (21 +/- 1 yr of age) were studied during weeks of high and low hormone concentrations. Eight men (23 +/- 1 yr of age) were studied twice within 2-4 wk. With the use of venous occlusion plethysmography with mercury in-Silastic strain gauges, lower limb venous compliance was measured by inflating a venous collection cuff that was placed on the thigh to 60 mmHg for 8 min and then reducing the pressure to 0 mmHg at a rate of 1 mmHg/s. Venous compliance was calculated as the derivative of the pressure-volume curves. There were no differences between early follicular, ovulatory, and midluteal phases of the menstrual cycle or between high and low hormone phases of oral contraceptive use (P > 0.05). Male venous compliance was significantly greater than in normally menstruating women (P < 0.001) and oral contraceptive users (P < 0.002). These data support a sex difference but also suggest that venous compliance does not change with menstrual cycle phase or during the course of oral contraceptive use.  相似文献

We assessed the effects of aerobic and/or resistance training on thermoregulatory responses in older men and analyzed the results in relation to the changes in peak oxygen consumption rate (VO(2 peak)) and blood volume (BV). Twenty-three older men [age, 64 +/- 1 (SE) yr; VO(2 peak), 32.7 +/- 1.1 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)] were divided into three training regimens for 18 wk: control (C; n = 7), aerobic training (AT; n = 8), and resistance training (RT; n = 8). Subjects in C were allowed to perform walking of ~10,000 steps/day, 6-7 days/wk. Subjects in AT exercised on a cycle ergometer at 50-80% VO(2 peak) for 60 min/day, 3 days/wk, in addition to the walking. Subjects in RT performed a resistance exercise, including knee extension and flexion at 60-80% of one repetition maximum, two to three sets of eight repetitions per day, 3 days/wk, in addition to the walking. After 18 wk of training, VO(2 peak) increased by 5.2 +/- 3.4% in C (P > 0.07), 20.0 +/- 2.5% in AT (P < 0.0001), and 9.7 +/- 5.1% in RT (P < 0.003), but BV remained unchanged in all trials. In addition, the esophageal temperature (T(es)) thresholds for forearm skin vasodilation and sweating, determined during 30-min exercise of 60% VO(2 peak) at 30 degrees C, decreased in AT (P < 0.02) and RT (P < 0.02) but not in C (P > 0.2). In contrast, the slopes of forearm skin vascular conductance/T(es) and sweat rate/T(es) remained unchanged in all trials, but both increased in subjects with increased BV irrespective of trials with significant correlations between the changes in the slopes and BV (P < 0.005 and P < 0.0005, respectively). Thus aerobic and/or resistance training in older men increased VO(2 peak) and lowered T(es) thresholds for forearm skin vasodilation and sweating but did not increase BV. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the increase in skin vasodilation and sweating at a given increase in T(es) was more associated with BV than with VO(2 peak).  相似文献

The purpose was to test the hypothesis that twice daily, short-term, variable intensity isotonic and intermittent high-intensity isokinetic leg exercise would maintain peak O2 uptake (VO2) and muscular strength and endurance, respectively, at or near ambulatory control levels during 30 days of -6 degrees head-down bed rest (BR) deconditioning. Nineteen men (aged 32-42 yr) were divided into no exercise control (peak VO2 once/wk, n = 5), isokinetic (Lido ergometer, n = 7), and isotonic (Quinton ergometer, n = 7) groups. Exercise training was conducted in the supine position for two 30-min periods/day for 5 days/wk. Isotonic training was at 60-90% of peak VO2, and isokinetic training (knee flexion-extension) was at 100 degrees/s. Mean (+/- SE) changes (P less than 0.05) in peak VO2 (ml.m-1.kg-1) from ambulatory control to BR day 28 were 44 +/- 4 to 36 +/- 3, -18.2% (3.27-2.60 l/m) for no exercise, 39 +/- 4 to 40 +/- 3, +2.6% (3.13-3.14 l/min) for isotonic, and 44 +/- 3 to 40 +/- 2, -9.1% (3.24-2.90 l/min) for isokinetic. There were no significant changes in any groups in leg peak torque (right knee flexion or extension), leg mean total work, arm total peak torque, or arm mean total work. Mean energy costs for the isotonic and isokinetic exercise training were 446 kcal/h (18.8 +/- 1.6 ml.min-1.kg-1) and 214 kcal/h (8.9 +/- 0.5 ml.m-1.kg-1), respectively. Thus near-peak, variable intensity, isotonic leg exercise maintains peak VO2 during 30 days of BR, while this peak, intermittent, isokinetic leg exercise protocol does not.  相似文献

The independent and combined effects of exercise training and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on body composition, fat distribution, glucose tolerance, and insulin action were studied in postmenopausal women, aged 68 +/- 5 yr, assigned to control (n = 19), exercise (n = 18), HRT (n = 15), and exercise + HRT (n = 16) groups. The exercise consisted of 2 mo of flexibility exercises followed by 9 mo of endurance exercise. HRT was conjugated estrogens 0.625 mg/day and trimonthly medroxyprogesterone acetate 5 mg/day for 13 days. Total and regional body composition were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Serum glucose and insulin responses were measured during a 2-h oral glucose tolerance test. There were significant main effects of exercise on reductions in total and regional (trunk, arms, legs) fat mass, increase in leg fat-free mass, and improvements in glucose tolerance and insulin action. There were significant main effects of HRT on the reduction of total fat mass (HRT, -3.0 +/- 4.0 kg; no HRT, -1.3 +/- 2.6 kg), with a strong trend for reductions in trunk and leg fat mass (both P = 0.07). There was also a significant improvement in insulin action in response to HRT. These results suggest that there are independent and additive effects of exercise training and HRT on the reduction in fat mass and improvement in insulin action in postmenopausal women; the effect of HRT on insulin action may be mediated, in part, through changes in central adiposity.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine whether differences in physical activity-related fat oxidation exist between lean and obese African-American (LAA and OAA) and lean and obese Caucasian (LC and OC) premenopausal women. Lean AA (28.4 +/- 2.8 yr, n = 7), LC (24.7 +/- 1.8 yr, n = 9), OAA (30.9 +/- 2.2 yr, n = 11), and OC (34.1 +/- 2.5 yr, n = 9) women underwent preliminary assessment of peak aerobic capacity (VO2 peak). On a subsequent testing day, participants exercised after an 8-h fast on a cycle ergometer at 15 W (approximately 40% VO2 peak) for 10 min and then for 10 min at approximately 65% VO2 peak). Fatty acid oxidation was determined using the average respiratory exchange ratio and O2 consumption during minutes 5-9 of the exercise session. Percent body fat and fat-free mass were lower (P < 0.05) in LAA (25.8 +/- 2.8% and 48.3 kg) and LC (26.4 +/- 2.0% and 45.8 +/- 1.7 kg) than in OAA (41.2 +/- 1.3% and 58.8 +/- 3.3 kg) and OC (39.3 +/- 2.7% and 58.6 kg) women. Fat oxidation among the groups was analyzed statistically using analysis of covariance with fat-free mass and VO2 peak) as covariates. During exercise at 15 W, fat oxidation was as low in LAA (0.134 +/- 0.024 g/min) as in OAA (0.144 +/- 0.026 g/min) and OC (0.156 +/- 0.020 g/min) women: all these rates of fat oxidation were lower than in LC women (0.200 +/- 0.021 g/min, P < 0.05, LC vs. all other groups). Fatty acid oxidation during higher-intensity exercise (65% VO2 peak)) was higher in LC than in OC women but was not statistically different between African-American and Caucasian groups. Fatty acid oxidation was therefore lower during low-intensity physical activity in OAA, LAA, and OC than in LC women.  相似文献

In order to test for possible sex differences in endurance capacity, groups of young, physically active women (n = 6) and men (n = 7) performed bicycle ergometer exercise at 80% and 90% of their maximal oxygen uptakes (VO2 max). The groups were matched for age and physical activity habits. At 80% VO2 max the women performed significantly longer (P less than 0.05), 53.8 +/- 12.7 min vs 36.8 +/- 12.2 min, respectively (means +/- SD). Mid-exercise and terminal respiratory exchange ratio (R) values were significantly lower in women, suggesting a later occurrence of muscle glycogen depletion as a factor in their enhanced endurance. At 90% VO2 max the endurance times were similar for men and women, 21.2 +/- 10.3 min and 22.0 +/- 5.0 min, respectively. The blood lactate levels reached in these experiments were only marginally lower (mean differences 1.5 to 2 mmol X l-1) than those obtained at VO2 max, suggesting high lactate levels as a factor in exhaustion. The changes in body weight during the 80% experiments and the degree of hemoconcentration were not significantly different between men and women.  相似文献

To assess the influence of initial diameter on the gender difference in flow-dependent dilatation (FDD) of the conduit artery, we measured radial artery internal diameter (echotracking), flow (Doppler) and total blood viscosity in 24 healthy (25 +/- 0.8 yr) men and women during reactive hyperemia (RH) and during a gradual hand skin heating (SH). At baseline, mean diameter (men, 2.76 +/- 0.09 vs. women, 2.32 +/- 0.07 mm, P < 0.05), flow (men, 21 +/- 4 vs. women, 10 +/- 1 ml/min, P < 0.05), and blood viscosity (men, 4.13 +/- 0.07 vs. women, 3.92 +/- 0.13 cP, P < 0.05) were higher in men but mean shear stress (MSS) was not different between groups. During RH, the percent increase in diameter was lower in men (men, 9 +/- 1 vs. women, 13 +/- 1%, P < 0.05). This difference was suppressed after correction for baseline diameter. During SH, the increase in diameter with flow was higher in women (P < 0.01). However, the increase in MSS was higher in women because of their smaller diameter at each level of flow (P < 0.01) and there was no difference between groups for the increase in diameter at each level of MSS. These results demonstrate in a direct manner that initial diameter influences the magnitude of FDD of conduit arteries in humans by modifying the value of the arterial wall shear stress at each level of flow and support the interest of the heating method in presence of heterogeneous groups.  相似文献

The age-related decline in fat-free mass is accelerated in women after menopause, implying that ovarian hormone deficiency may have catabolic effects on lean tissue. Because fat-free tissue mass is largely determined by its protein content, alterations in ovarian hormones would likely exert regulatory control through effects on protein balance. To address the hypothesis that ovarian hormones regulate protein metabolism, we examined the effect of menopausal status and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on protein turnover. Whole body protein breakdown, oxidation, and synthesis were measured under postabsorptive conditions using [(13)C]leucine in healthy premenopausal (n = 15, 49 +/- 1 yr) and postmenopausal (n = 18, 53 +/- 1 yr) women. In postmenopausal women, whole body protein turnover and plasma albumin synthesis rates (assessed using [(13)C]leucine and [(2)H]phenylalanine) were also measured following 2 mo of treatment with oral HRT (0.625 mg conjugated estrogens + 2.5 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate, n = 9) or placebo (n = 9). No differences in whole body protein breakdown, oxidation, or synthesis were found between premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Protein metabolism remained similar between groups after statistical adjustment for differences in adiposity and when subgroups of women matched for percent body fat were compared. In postmenopausal women, no effect of HRT was found on whole body protein breakdown, synthesis, or oxidation. In contrast, our results support a stimulatory effect of HRT on albumin fractional synthesis rate, although this did not translate into alterations in circulating albumin concentrations. In conclusion, our results suggest no detrimental effect of ovarian hormone deficiency coincident with the postmenopausal state, and no salutary effect of hormone repletion with HRT, on rates of whole body protein turnover, although oral HRT regimens may increase the synthesis rates of albumin.  相似文献

Older, obese, and sedentary individuals are at high risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Exercise training improves metabolic anomalies associated with such diseases, but the effects of caloric restriction in addition to exercise in such a high-risk group are not known. Changes in body composition and metabolism during a lifestyle intervention were investigated in 23 older, obese men and women (aged 66 +/- 1 yr, body mass index 33.2 +/- 1.4 kg/m(2)) with impaired glucose tolerance. All volunteers undertook 12 wk of aerobic exercise training [5 days/wk for 60 min at 75% maximal oxygen consumption (Vo(2max))] with either normal caloric intake (eucaloric group, 1,901 +/- 277 kcal/day, n = 12) or a reduced-calorie diet (hypocaloric group, 1,307 +/- 70 kcal/day, n = 11), as dictated by nutritional counseling. Body composition (decreased fat mass; maintained fat-free mass), aerobic fitness (Vo(2max)), leptinemia, insulin sensitivity, and intramyocellular lipid accumulation (IMCL) in skeletal muscle improved in both groups (P < 0.05). Improvements in body composition, leptin, and basal fat oxidation were greater in the hypocaloric group. Following the intervention, there was a correlation between the increase in basal fat oxidation and the decrease in IMCL (r = -0.53, P = 0.04). In addition, basal fat oxidation was associated with circulating leptin after (r = 0.65, P = 0.0007) but not before the intervention (r = 0.05, P = 0.84). In conclusion, these data show that exercise training improves resting substrate oxidation and creates a metabolic milieu that appears to promote lipid utilization in skeletal muscle, thus facilitating a reversal of insulin resistance. We also demonstrate that leptin sensitivity is improved but that such a trend may rely on reducing caloric intake in addition to exercise training.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of acute dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) ingestion on serum steroid hormones and the effect of chronic DHEA intake on the adaptations to resistance training. In 10 young men (23 +/- 4 yr old), ingestion of 50 mg of DHEA increased serum androstenedione concentrations 150% within 60 min (P < 0.05) but did not affect serum testosterone and estrogen concentrations. An additional 19 men (23 +/- 1 yr old) participated in an 8-wk whole body resistance-training program and ingested DHEA (150 mg/day, n = 9) or placebo (n = 10) during weeks 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8. Serum androstenedione concentrations were significantly (P < 0.05) increased in the DHEA-treated group after 2 and 5 wk. Serum concentrations of free and total testosterone, estrone, estradiol, estriol, lipids, and liver transaminases were unaffected by supplementation and training, while strength and lean body mass increased significantly and similarly (P < 0.05) in the men treated with placebo and DHEA. These results suggest that DHEA ingestion does not enhance serum testosterone concentrations or adaptations associated with resistance training in young men.  相似文献

Individual responses to aerobic training vary from almost none to a 40% increase in aerobic fitness in sedentary subjects. The reasons for these differences in the training response are not well known. We hypothesized that baseline cardiovascular autonomic function may influence the training response. The study population included sedentary male subjects (n = 39, 35 +/- 9 yr). The training period was 8 wk, including 6 sessions/wk at an intensity of 70-80% of the maximum heart rate for 30-60 min/session. Cardiovascular autonomic function was assessed by measuring the power spectral indexes of heart rate variability from 24-h R-R interval recordings before the training period. Mean peak O2 uptake increased by 11 +/- 5% during the training period (range 2-19%). The training response correlated with age (r = -0.39, P = 0.007) and with the values of the high-frequency (HF) spectral component of R-R intervals (HF power) analyzed over the 24-h recording (r = 0.46, P = 0.002) or separately during the daytime hours (r = 0.35, P = 0.028) and most strongly during the nighttime hours (r = 0.52, P = 0.001). After adjustment for age, HF power was still associated with the training response (e.g., P = 0.001 analyzed during nighttime hours). These data show that cardiovascular autonomic function is an important determinant of the response to aerobic training among sedentary men. High vagal activity at baseline is associated with the improvement in aerobic power caused by aerobic exercise training in healthy sedentary subjects.  相似文献

Aging and chronic exercise training influence leg venous compliance. Venous compliance affects responses to an orthostatic stress. The extent to which exercise training in a previously sedentary older population will affect venous compliance and tolerance to the simulated orthostatic stress of maximal lower body negative pressure (LBNP) is unknown. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the influence of a 6-mo endurance-training program on calf venous compliance and responses and tolerance to maximal LBNP in older men and women. Twenty participants (exercise group: n = 10, 5 men, 5 women; control group: n = 10, 6 men, 4 women; all >60 yr) underwent graded LBNP to presyncope or 4 min at -100 mmHg before and after a 6-mo endurance-training program. Utilizing venous occlusion plethysmography, calf venous compliance was determined in both groups using the first derivative of the pressure-volume relation during cuff pressure reduction before training, at 3 mo, and at the end of the training program. The exercise group improved their fitness with the 6-mo endurance-training program, whereas the control group did not change (14 +/- 3 vs. <1 +/- 2%; P < 0.05). LBNP tolerance did not differ between groups or across trials (P = 0.47). Venous compliance was not different between groups or trials, either initially or after 3 mo of endurance training, but tended to be greater in the exercise group after 6 mo of training (P = 0.08). These data suggest that a 6-mo endurance-training program may improve venous compliance without affecting tolerance to maximal LBNP in older participants.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of age on breathing and total pulmonary resistance (RL) during sleep by studying elderly (>65 yr) and young (25-38 yr) people without sleep apnea (EN and YN, respectively) matched for body mass index (BMI). To determine the impact of sleep apnea on age-related changes in breathing, we studied elderly and young apneic patients (EA and YA, respectively) matched for apnea and BMI. In all groups (n = 11), breathing during periods of stable sleep was analyzed to evaluate the intrinsic variability of respiratory control mechanisms. In the absence of sleep apnea, the variability of the breathing was similar in the elderly and young [mean (+/- SD) coefficient of variation (CV) of tidal volume (VT); wake: EN 21.0 +/- 14.9%, YN 14.7 +/- 5.5%; sleep: EN 14.0 +/- 6.0%; YN 11.5 +/- 6.4%]. In patients with sleep apnea, breathing during stable sleep was more irregular, but there were no age-related differences (CV of VT; wake: EA 22.0 +/- 11.6%, YA 16.7 +/- 11.3%; sleep: EA 32.8 +/- 24.9%, YA 25.2 +/- 16.3%). In addition, EN tended to have a higher RL (n = 6, RL midinspiration, wake: EN 7.1 +/- 3.0; YN 9.1 +/- 6.4 cmH(2)O. l(-1). s, sleep: EN 17.5 +/- 11.7; YN 9.8 +/- 2.0 cmH(2)O. l(-1). s). We conclude that aging per se does not contribute to the intrinsic variability of respiratory control mechanisms, although there may be a lower probability of finding elderly people without respiratory instability.  相似文献
