Both diaphragm shape and tension contribute to transdiaphragmatic pressure, but of the three variables, tension is most difficult to measure. We measured transdiaphragmatic pressure and the global shape of the in vivo canine diaphragm and used principles of mechanics to compute the tension distribution. Our hypotheses were that 1) tension in the active diaphragm is nonuniform with greater tension in the central tendon than in the muscular regions; 2) maximum tension is essentially oriented in the muscle fiber direction, whereas minimum tension is orthogonal to the fiber direction; and 3) during submaximal activation change in the in vivo global shape is small. Metallic markers, each 2 mm in length, were implanted surgically on the peritoneal surface of the diaphragm at 1.5- to 2.0-cm intervals along the muscle bundles at the midline, ventral, middle, and dorsal regions of the left costal diaphragm and along a muscle bundle of the crural diaphragm. Postsurgery, a biplane videofluoroscopic system was used to determine the in vivo three-dimensional coordinates of the markers at end expiration and end inspiration during quiet breathing as well as at end-inspiratory efforts against an occluded airway at lung volumes of functional residual capacity and at one-third maximum inspiratory capacity increments in volume to total lung capacity. A surface was fit to the marker locations using a two-dimensional spline algorithm. Diaphragm surface was modeled as a pressurized membrane, and tension distribution in the active diaphragm was computed using the ANSYS finite element program. We showed that the peak of the diaphragm dome was closer to the ventral surface than to the dorsal surface and that there was a depression or valley in the crural region. In the supine position, during inspiratory efforts, the caudal displacement of the dorsal region of the diaphragm was greater than that of the dome, and the valley along the crural diaphragm was accentuated. In contrast, at lower lung volumes in the prone posture, the caudal displacement of the dome was greater than that of the crural region. At end of inspiration, transdiaphragmatic pressure was approximately 6.5 cmH2O, and tensions were nonuniform in the diaphragm. Maximum principal stress sigma(1) of central tendon was found to be greater than sigma(1) of the costal region, and that was greater than sigma(1) of the crural region, with values of 14-34, 14-29, and 4-14 g/cm, respectively. The corresponding data of the minimum principal stress sigma(2) were 9-18, 3-9, and 0-1.5 g/cm, respectively. Maximum principal tension was approximately parallel to the muscle fibers, whereas minimum tension was essentially orthogonal to the longitudinal direction of the muscle fibers. In the muscular region, sigma(1) was approximately 3-fold sigma(2), whereas in the central tendon, sigma(1) was only approximately 1.5-fold sigma(2.).  相似文献

Corticocortical connections from the posterior association area to the posterior part of the superior temporal sulcal cortex (STs area) were studied in the monkey by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or wheatgerm-agglutinin-conjugated HRP (WGA-HRP). After injecting 0.05-0.2 microliter of 50% HRP or 5% WGA-HRP into the STs area, labeled cells were examined in various cortical regions. The dorsal wall of the STs receives fibers mainly from the inferior parietal lobule (area 7) and superior temporal gyrus (area 22), whereas the ventral wall and floor part of the STs receive fibers from the posterior inferotemporal gyrus (area TEO) and prestriate cortex (areas 18 and 19). The deeper parts of the dorsal wall close to the floor region of the STs area also receive many fibers from the cortical walls surrounding the intraparietal, lunate and lateral sulci. Both the dorsal and ventral cortical walls of the intraparietal sulcus send fibers mainly to the deep dorsal wall of the STs. The ventral wall of the STs, on the other hand, receives fibers only from the ventral wall of the intraparietal sulcus. The medial surface of the prestriate cortex and the parahippocampal region send fibers to both walls of the STs. In the prestriate-STs projections originating from areas around the parieto-occipital sulcus, a topographic correlation is present; area 19 located anterior to the sulcus projects to the dorsal wall, whereas area 18 situated posterior to the sulcus projects to the ventral wall. Only the dorsal wall receives fibers from the cingulate (areas 23 and 24) and subparietal gyri (area 7). The deeper part of the dorsal wall and the ventral wall of the posterior STs area are interconnected with each other, while the upper part of the dorsal wall does not appear to receive fibers from the ventral wall.  相似文献

Nonuniformity of myocardial systolic and diastolic performance in the normal left ventricle has been recognized by a number of investigators. Lack of homogeneity in diastolic properties might be caused by or related to differences in the distensibility of different regions of the left ventricular (LV) wall. Thus, we compared the end-diastolic transmural pressure-strain relations in both the anterior and posterior LV walls in seven anesthetized dogs during two interventions (pulmonary artery constriction and aortic constriction). Transmural pressure was defined as the difference between LV intracavitary pressure and local pericardial pressure. LV pressure was measured using a micromanometer; pericardial pressures over the LV anterior and posterior walls were measured with balloon transducers. Circumferentially oriented pairs of sonomicrometer crystals were implanted in the midwall of the anterior and posterior walls of the LV to measure segment lengths. Strains were calculated as (L-L0)/L0, where L was the instantaneous segment length and L0 was the segment length when transmural pressure was zero. The pattern of end-diastolic transmural pressure--strain relations was similar in all dogs. The change in strain in the posterior wall was always greater than that in the anterior wall. Opening the pericardium did not affect the difference in distensibility of the anterior and posterior walls. The results suggest that the posterior wall is more compliant than the anterior wall (that is, for a given difference in transmural pressure, the local segment length change of the posterior wall was greater). This seems consistent with other observations, which suggest that the posterior wall might make a greater contribution to diastolic filling.  相似文献

Using the electroretinogram (ERG) technique the spectral efficiency of the compound eye of the glasshouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) and its main parasitoid Encarsia formosa (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) was measured at selected wavelengths between 340 nm and 670 nm. The form of the ERG for both T. vaporariorum and E. formosa was found to be monophasic in nature. For both male and female T. vaporariorum and female E. formosa a primary peak of efficiency occurred in the blue-green-yellow region, peak 520 nm and a secondary peak in the ultraviolet (UV) region. The compound eye of female E. formosa gave a significantly greater response in the UV region than either the dorsal or ventral regions of the compound eye of T. vaporariorum relative to the responses in the blue-green-yellow region. T. vaporariorum has divided compound eyes with distinct dorsal and ventral regions. In this study it was found that the percentage response in the UV, of the dorsal region of the eye, is significantly greater than that of the ventral region of the eye relative to the percentage response in the blue-green-yellow region and there is a significant shift in the blue-green yellow peak towards the right of the spectrum.  相似文献

The relationships between chordates with their dorsal nerve cord and other animal groups remain unclear. The hemichordata, specifically the enteropneusta (acorn worms), have been considered a sister group to the chordata. Enteropneusts combine various chordate features (e.g. lateral gill openings, dorsal nerve cord) with features that are usually associated with gastroneuralian invertebrates (e.g. dorsal heart, circumenteric nerve ring, ventral nerve cord). Here we analyse various morphological and functional characteristics that enteropneusts share with either invertebrates or chordates in the light of our recent proposal that the chordata may derive – by bodily dorsoventral inversion – from a gastroneuralian ancestor. We show that many seemingly non-chordate features of enteropneusts will align with similar features in the chordates – provided that we compare the ventral side of an enteropneust to the dorsal side of a chordate. This inversion proposes several interesting and new putative homologies between enteropneusts and acranian chordates, such as between their epibranchial ridge/endostyle (later thyroid gland), their postanal tails, atrial walls, and also between the chordates' dorsal notochord and the enteropneusts' posteroventral pygochord. Significantly, positional homology between notochord and pygochord is also supported by the expression domains of Brachyury orthologs in vertebrates and invertebrates: a Brachyury ortholog is active in the postero ventral mesoderm in Drosophila and in the dorsal mesoderm in chordates. In conclusion, we propose that the anatomy of enteropneusts may serve as a conceptual 'missing link' between gastroneuralian invertebrates and notoneuralian chordates. We discuss whether the enteropneust's dorsoanterior nervous centre plus their ventral trunk cord then corresponds to brain and dorsal nerve cord in the chordata.  相似文献

Triticum aestivum cv. “Yang Mai # 1” was used to study the celI wall formation in free-nuclear endosperm with electronmicroscopy and fluorescence microscopy. During the initiation of cellularization the peg-like wall ingrowths developed, and the freely growing walls gradually cleaved the cytoplasm into small compartments in both regions (ventral and dorsal) of the 'endosperm sac, but in ventral region the anastomose of freely growing wall often occured. The striking resemblance and close connection betwteen nucellar debris and freely growing walls showed the possibility that the disintegrated nucellus played an important role in supporting the wall formation of endosperm during the early stages of cellularization.  相似文献

The development and structure of the guard cell walls of Funaria hygrometrica Hedw. (Musci) were studied with the light and electron microscopes. The stoma consists of only one, binucleate guard cell as the pore wall does not extend to the ends of the cell. The guard cell wall is thinnest in the dorsal wall near the outer wall but during movement is most likely to flex at thin areas of the outer and ventral walls. The mature wall contains a mottled layer sandwiched between two, more fibrillar layers. The internal wall layer has sublayers with fibrils in axial and radial orientations with respect to the pore. During substomatal cavity formation, the middle lamella is stretched into an electron dense network and into strands and sheets. After stomatal pore formation, the subsidiary cell walls close to the guard cell become strikingly thickened. The functional implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

The distribution of glycine, GABA, glutamate and aspartate was measured among about 60 subdivisions of rabbit spinal cord, and among the discrete layers of cerebellum, hippocampus and area dentata. A more detailed mapping for GABA was made within the tip of the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Spinal ventral horn and dorsal root ganglion cell bodies were analyzed for the amino acids and for total lipid. The distribution of lipid and lipid-free dry weight per unit volume was also determined in spinal cord. Calculated on the basis of tissue water, glycine in the cord is highest in lateral and ventral white matter immediately adjacent to the ventral grey. The distribution of GABA is almost the inverse of that of glycine with highest level in the tip of dorsal horn. It is most highly concentrated in the central 75% of Rexed layers III and IV. Aspartate in the tip of ventral horn is 4-fold higher than in the tip of the dorsal horn and 3 times the average concentration in brain. Glutamate was much more evenly distributed and is relatively low in concentration with slightly higher levels in dorsal than in ventral grey matter. Large cell bodies in both ventral horn and dorsal root ganglion contained high levels of glycine. As reported by others, GABA was found to be high in cerebellar grey layers, area dentata, and regio inferior of hippocampus. Glycine was moderately high in cerebellar layers but moderate to low in hippocampus and area dentata.  相似文献

气孔由一对保卫细胞组成,且其壁具有不均一加厚的特性(图1),并能敏感地感受内、外环境信号而调节K~ 等渗透调节物质进出保卫细胞引起膨压变化,从而控制气孔的大小、调节植物体与外界环境所进行的水分和气体交换。进一步研究发现,以K~ 为主的渗透调节物质引起的膨压变化受到许多因子的调控,如ABA可以中介Ca~(2 )作用抑制K~ 内向通道或直接作用于K~ 外向通道使K~ 外流,但ABA影响K~ 通道的信号转导途径仍是一个有待进一步探索的课题。大量研究表明,细胞运动与细胞骨架有关。如丝瓜卷须的卷曲运动、胞质环流、花粉管萌发与伸长、含羞草的感震性运动,以及细胞器的运动等都与细胞骨架有关。我们用植物微管特异性解聚剂——甲基胺草磷(APM)以及微丝专一性抑制剂——细胞松驰素B(CB)预处理蚕豆开放或关闭气孔后可明显地抑制Ca~(2 )、ABA、光、K~ 等引起的气孔运动,表明微管、微丝可能参与调节气孔的运动过程。Couot-Gastelier和Louguet经电镜观察证  相似文献

The pump function of the heart ventricles was studied in chest-open anaesthetized adult female chickens under sinus rhythm and ectopic excitation of different localization. The intraventricular pressure in the right and left heart ventricles was measured by insertion of catheters through the ventricular free walls. Maximum systolic pressure, end-diastolic pressure, contractility (dP/dtmax) and relaxation (dP/dtmin) of both heart ventricles, and duration of the asynchronous contraction time of the left ventricle were analyzed. It was revealed that reduction of the pump function of the left ventricle tends to be greater under right ventricular ectopic excitation compared with left ventricular one. In comparison with the sinus rhythm, the pump function of the right ventricle was preserved to a greater extent under stimulation of the left ventricular apex and was significantly impaired under right ventricular ectopic excitation. Relaxation of both heart ventricles was more susceptible to ventricular ectopic excitation than contractility, and was more vulnerable in the right ventricle than in the left one. The direction of changes of the pump function of the heart ventricles in chickens under ventricular ectopic excitation was similar to changes of the pump function of mammalian hearts.  相似文献

Abstract : This study directly assessed striatal dopamine (DA) uptake rates and peak release in response to KCl in normal, symptomatic, and recovered 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated cats using in vivo electrochemistry. DA uptake rates measured after direct application of known concentrations of DA to the striatum were slowed significantly in both dorsal and ventral striatum in symptomatic cats compared with rates recorded in normal animals. DA uptake rates remained significantly slowed in recovered cats and were not significantly different from the rates recorded in symptomatic animals. In symptomatic cats, both DA uptake rates and the signal recorded in response to KCl stimulation were significantly decreased from normal in all dorsal and ventral striatal regions sampled. Reduction/oxidation (redox) ratios recorded in response to KCl stimulation suggested DA to be the predominant electroactive species. In spontaneously recovered MPTP-treated cats, recordings in the ventral striatum subsequent to KCl stimulation again suggested DA to be the predominant electroactive species released, and peak levels were significantly higher than those recorded in symptomatic animals. In the dorsal striatum of recovered cats, redox ratios recorded subsequent to KCl stimulation suggested serotonin rather than DA to be the predominant electroactive species released. Peak levels of release in the dorsal striatum were not significantly greater than those recorded in symptomatic animals. These results suggest that in spontaneously recovered MPTP-treated cats, there is partial recovery of ventral striatal DAergic terminals, persistent loss of dorsal striatal DAergic terminals, and a down-regulation of DA transporter number/function throughout the striatum. These processes may contribute to volume transmission of DA in the striatum and promote functional recovery.  相似文献

Structural differentiation of the guard cells of Vigna sinensis results from the integration of the following interrelated processes: a) intense activity of ribosomes, dictyosomes, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membranes and mitochondria and patterned organization of microtubules; b) unequal thickening and ordered micellation of their walls and opening of the stomatal pore; and c) the divergent differentiation of the plastids. In differentiating guard cells, microtubules appear anticlinally oriented and more or less evenly distributed along the unthickened part of the dorsal wall and in the middle part of the ventral wall where thickening of the future pore occurs. In periclinal walls, microtubules fan away from the margins of the increasing thickening of the ventral wall and, later, from the rims of the stomatal pore towards the dorsal walls, parallel to the depositing radial microfibrils. Microtubules may be the cytoplasmic elements underlying guard-cell morphogenesis. Although cell-plate organization in guard-cell mother cells does not seem to differ from that of other protodermal cells, the middle lamella of the ventral wall becomes electron-translucent. The stomatal pore develops schizogenously from the internal and/or external ends of the ventral wall and proceeds inwards, remaining incomplete in most of the stomata of plants grown for 30 days in darkness and in some malformed ones which were developed after a prolonged action of colchicine. The guard cell, when approaching maturity, loses its organelle complexity and plasmodesmata, but it keeps a significant portion of its cytoplasm and organelles. Perigenous stomata generally exceed the size of mesoperigenous and mesogenous ones, develop large vacuoles and appear able to induce oriented divisions in their vicinity.  相似文献

Temperate and boreal mammals undergo seasonal changes in pelage that facilitate thermoregulation in winter and summer. We investigated photoperiodic influences on pelage characteristics of male Siberian and Syrian hamsters. Fur density (mg fur/cm2 skin) was measured by weighing the shavings of fur patches removed from the dorsal and ventral surfaces of hamsters maintained in long days (LDs) or transferred to short days (SDs). Patches were reshaved 3 wk later to assess fur regrowth (mg regrown fur/cm2 skin). Fur density was greater in SD than in LD Siberian hamsters after 11 wk of differential phototreatment. The onset of increased fur density in SDs was accompanied by a transient increase in fur regrowth (11-14 wk on the dorsal surface and 7-10 and 11-14 wk on the ventral surface), suggestive of a seasonal molting process. Fur density, body mass, and pelage color of Siberian hamsters returned to values characteristic of LD males after a similar duration of prolonged (>27 wk) SD treatment and appear to be regulated by a similar or common interval-timing mechanism. In Syrian hamsters, dorsal fur density, fur regrowth, and hair lengths were greater in SD than in LD males. Castration increased and testosterone (T) treatment decreased dorsal and ventral fur regrowth in LD and SD hamsters, but the effects of T manipulations on fur density were limited to a decrease in dorsal fur density after T treatment. Decreased circulating T in SDs likely contributes to the seasonal molt of male hamsters by increasing the rate of fur growth during the transition to the winter pelage.  相似文献

The cardiovascular effects of leukotriene (LT) C4 and prostaglandin (PG) I2 were compared in the unanesthetized American bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana. Bullfrogs were instrumented to measure mean arterial pressure, peak ventricular pressure, its derivative (VP + dP/dt), and heart rate. Two hours after recovery from anesthesia, intravenous injections of LTC4 or PGI2 were tested over a dose range from 0.003 to 3 micrograms/kg body weight (bw). Both eicosanoids decreased mean arterial pressure, systolic ventricular pressure, and its derivative (VP + dP/dt). The effects of LTC4 and PGI2 on all parameters were similar at doses below 3 micrograms/kg bw. However, at 3 micrograms/kg bw, LTC4 had more potent negative inotropic effects than PGI2. Both compounds increased heart rate at 0.3 microgram/kg bw, but at 3 micrograms/kg bw PGI2 caused greater increases than LTC4. The hypotensive and negative inotropic effects of LTC4 were blunted in animals pretreated with indomethacin (4 mg/kg bw) to prevent endogenous prostaglandin and thromboxane synthesis, whereas the cardiovascular effects of PGI2 were unaffected by the blockade. The data show that both eicosanoids have similar qualitative effects on blood pressure and cardiac performance. However, the effects of LTC4 may be partially mediated by release of endogenous cyclooxygenase products, possibly PGI2. These results suggest that the bullfrog, an animal with no coronary arteries, is a useful model for comparative studies of cardiac actions of eicosanoids which are independent of effects mediated by changes in coronary vascular resistance.  相似文献

Early cellularization of the free-nuclear endosperm and subsequent differentation of the aleurone cells in the ventral region of the developing wheatgrain (Triticumaestivum L. cv. Heron) were examined using both light and electron microscopy. In ovules harvested 1 d after anthesis, irregular wall ingroths typical of transfer cells protrude into the multinucleate cytoplasm. Initital cellularization occurs by a process of free wall formation in much the same fashion as in the dorsal region of the grain. In places, sheets of endoplasmic reticulum and dictyosomes appear to be closely associated with the growing wall. Like the wall ingrowths noted earlier, the freely growing walls are intensely fluorescent after staining with aniline blue. Initiatal cellularization is complete 2–3 days after anthesis. Unlike the first-formed cells in the dorsal region of the developing grain, those in the ventral region are not meristematic. These amitotic cells become the groove aleurone cells which at an early stage of development are set apart from the rest of the endosperm by their irregularly thickened walls and dense cytoplasm. Autofluorescence is first apparent in the walls of those cells next to the degenerating nucellus. In contrast to the aleurone cells in the dorsal region of the grain, at maturity only the inner wall layer of each of the groove aleurone cells remains autofluorescent. The aleurone grains are highly variable in appearance and contain no Type II inclusions.  相似文献

To study systolic pressure gradients developed between the left ventricular wall, its chamber, and the aortic root, in one group of dogs left ventricle ventral wall intramyocardial pressure, left ventricular outflow tract pressure, and aorta pressure were compared with aortic flow as well as left ventricular dimension changes during control conditions as well as during positive intropic states induced by isoproterenol, stellate ganglion stimulation, and noradrenaline. In another group of dogs systolic pressures in the ventral wall of the left ventricle, the main portion of the left ventricular chamber, and the aorta were compared with aortic flow during similar interventions, before and after the administration of phentolamine. Pressure gradients between the wall of the left ventricle and the outflow tract of the left ventricle were minimal during control states, but during the three positive inotropic states were increased significantly. In contrast, pressure gradients between the outflow tract of the left ventricle and the aortic root were insignificant during positive inotropic states; those between the wall and main portion of the chamber were only significantly different during left stellate ganglion stimulation. The data derived from these experiments indicate that useful peak power output of the left ventricle (systolic aortic pressure X flow) is unchanged following isoproterenol infusion, but is increased by stellate ganglion stimulation and noradrenaline. The useful peak power output index (an index of left ventricular efficiency derived by dividing useful peak power output by peak intramyocardial pressure) was reduced more by isoproterenol than the other two interventions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The composition of guard cell walls in sugar beet leaves (Beta vulgaris L.) was studied by using histochemical staining and immunocytochemical detection of cell wall antigens. The findings were compared with those in the walls of epidermal and mesophyll cells. Probing of leaf sections with monoclonal antibodies against pectins, terminal fucosyl residues linked alpha-(1-->2) to galactose, beta-(1-->3)-glucans and arabinogalactan-proteins revealed several specific features of guard cells. Pectic epitopes recognized by JIM7 were homogeneously distributed in the wall, whereas pectins recognized by JIM5 were not found in the walls themselves, but were abundant in the cuticular layer. Large amounts of molecules bearing terminal fucose were located predominantly in ventral and lateral guard cell walls. Much smaller amounts were detected in dorsal walls of these cells, as well as in the walls of pavement and mesophyll cells. Conspicuous accumulation of these compounds was observed in the vicinity of the guard cell plasmalemma, whereas labelling was scarce in the areas of the wall adjacent to the cell surface. The presence of callose clearly marked the ventral wall between the recently formed, very young guard cells. Callose also appeared in some mature walls, where it was seen as punctate deposits that probably reflected a specific physiological state of the guard cells. Large amounts of arabinogalactan-proteins were deposited within the cuticle, and smaller amounts of these proteoglycans were also detected in other tissues of the leaf. The histochemical and immunocytochemical structure of the guard cell wall is discussed in the light of its multiple functions, most of which involve changes in cell size and shape.  相似文献

The mstacercarial cyst of Cloacitrema narrabeenensis which is formed in the open is composed of four layers: an outermost layer of acid mucopolysaccharide, a layer of protein which is presumed to be tanned, a layer of neutral mucopolysaccharide and an innermost layer of keratinized protein. The two layers which together form the outer cyst wall can be split off by slight pressure from the two remaining layers which together form the inner cyst wall. In the centre of the ventral side of the inner cyst wall, the keratinized layer is incomplete and this ventral plug region is composed of neutral mucopolysaccharide. The cyst wall is therefore very similar to that of Fasciola hepatica, the main difference being that the order of the two layers of the outer cyst is reversed. General evolutionary and functional relationships of metacercarial cysts are discussed.  相似文献

应用PAP-PAAP双重免疫组化染色程序在同一切片上进行两种肽能物质的定位,观察了中国树鼩下丘脑视上核和室旁核内VP能和OT能神经元的比较解剖学分布,发现:视上核被视束分成主部和交叉后部。在视上核主部,其头侧部几乎仅含OT能神经元胞体,中间部VP能胞体出现并逐渐增多,尾侧部VP能胞体数目明显超过OT能胞体。在明显含有两种胞体的中间部和尾侧部,OT能胞体多位于背内侧,VP能胞体多位于腹外侧;在视上核交叉后部,其头侧部以VP能胞体为主,且多位于背外侧,OT能胞体多位于腹内侧。中间部OT能胞体多位于内侧,VP能胞体多位于外侧。尾侧部OT能胞体多位于背、腹两侧,VP能胞体则多位于中间;在室旁核,其头侧部几乎全由OT能胞体构成。中间部,VP能胞体出现并逐渐增多,OT和VP能胞体分别主要位于内、外侧。尾侧部两种神经元胞体较明显地分为内、外两群,内侧群主要为OT能胞体,外侧群几乎全为VP能胞体,该群的头侧半又可分为背腹两个亚群,至尾侧半,此二亚群渐合并。本文讨论了OT和VP能神经元在中国树鼩和大鼠视上核和室旁核内的比较分布。  相似文献

Active and passive shortening of muscle bundles in the canine diaphragm were measured with the objective of testing a consequence of the minimal-work hypothesis: namely, that the ratio of active to passive shortening is the same for all active muscles. Lengths of six muscle bundles in the costal diaphragm and two muscle bundles in the crural diaphragm of each of four bred-for-research beagle dogs were measured by the radiopaque marker technique during the following maneuvers: a passive deflation maneuver from total lung capacity to functional residual capacity, quiet breathing, and forceful inspiratory efforts against an occluded airway at different lung volumes. Shortening per liter increase in lung volume was, on average, 70% greater during quiet breathing than during passive inflation in the prone posture and 40% greater in the supine posture. For the prone posture, the ratio of active to passive shortening was larger in the ventral and midcostal diaphragm than at the dorsal end of the costal diaphragm. For both postures, active shortening during quiet breathing was poorly correlated with passive shortening. However, shortening during forceful inspiratory efforts was highly correlated with passive shortening. The average ratios of active to passive shortening were 1.23 +/- 0.02 and 1.32 +/- 0.03 for the prone and supine postures, respectively. These data, taken together with the data reported in the companion paper (T. A. Wilson, M. Angelillo, A. Legrand, and A. De Troyer, J. Appl. Physiol. 87: 554-560, 1999), support the hypothesis that, during forceful inspiratory efforts, the inspiratory muscles drive the chest wall along the minimal-work trajectory.  相似文献
