The geometry and dynamics of plasma?dust structures in a longitudinal magnetic field is studied experimentally. The structures are formed in a glow-discharge trap created in the double electric layer produced as a result of discharge narrowing by means of a dielectric insert introduced in the discharge tube. Studies of structures formed in the new type of glow-discharge trap are of interest from the standpoint of future experiments with complex plasmas in superstrong magnetic fields in which the dust component is magnetized. Different types of dielectric inserts were used: conical and plane ones with symmetric and asymmetric apertures. Conditions for the existence of stable dust structures are determined for dust grains of different density and different dispersity. According to the experimental results, the angular velocity of dust rotation is ≥10 s–1, which is the fastest type of dust motion for all types of discharges in a magnetic field. The rotation is interpreted by analyzing the dynamics of individual dust grains.  相似文献

The process of decay of dust structures formed of polydisperse grains injected into an RF discharge is investigated. The dust grain velocities after switching-off of the discharge are measured. The number density, dimensions, and residual charges of dust grains are estimated from the balance of forces acting on the grains after discharge is switched off.  相似文献

The properties are studied of dusty plasma structures formed in a glow discharge in a dust trap above the lower wall of the side branch of the discharge tube, near the turn of the discharge channel. The dust structure is three-dimensional with a characteristic size of up to 3 cm and contains about 30000 dust grains. Depending on the experimental conditions, dust-acoustic, dissipative, and charge-gradient instabilities can develop in such a structure. When using highly polydisperse dust grains of arbitrary shape, the effect of selection of dust grains by the plasma with respect to their mean size and shape was discovered. This effect was studied quantitatively in two gases by using the method of gathering and extraction of the dust grains levitating in the trap. The morphology of the dust structures was determined from the pair correlation functions of the horizontal cross sections containing long-range order peaks and elements of a hexagonal lattice. Stratification of a uniform structure accompanied by convective rotation caused by the grain charge gradient was observed. Applications of the dusty plasma created in this type of device are discussed.  相似文献

A new method for creating nanostructures in a plasma focus discharge is proposed. It is shown that the material of a micron-size dust target produced at the discharge axis efficiently evaporates and is then involved in the pinching process. After the pinch decays, the plasma expands with the thermal velocity and the evaporated dust material is deposited on the collectors in the form of fractal particles or nanoclusters organized into various structures. Such structures have a well-developed surface, which is important for various technological applications.  相似文献

A generalized analytical model of instabilities in a dusty plasma with a nonzero grain charge gradient in a field of nonelectrostatic forces is considered. A review is given of different experimental observations of the dust self-oscillations that occur in the plasmas of an rf capacitive discharge and a dc glow discharge and whose appearance can be explained in terms of the proposed model. It is shown that the change in the grain charge gives rise to dynamic dust structures in laboratory gas-discharge plasmas. Attention is focused on the analysis of the onset of vortex motion of the dust grains.  相似文献

Results are presented from the experimental studies and numerical simulations of the behavior of dust grains in the plasma of an inductive RF discharge. The experiments were carried out with neon at a pressure of 25–500 Pa and with 1.87-μm melamine formaldehyde grains. The discharge was excited by a ring inductor supplied from a generator operating at a 100-MHz frequency. The effective dust-grain interaction potential used in numerical simulations involved the spatial dependence of the grain charge on the plasma floating potential, grain-interaction anisotropy resulting from the focusing of the drift ion current by the negatively charged grains, and specific features of the shielding of the dust grains by the plasma electrons and ions recombining both in the plasma bulk and on the grain surface. The results of Monte Carlo simulations show that the dust grains form specific filament structures observed experimentally in the plasma of an inductive electrodeless discharge. __________ Translated from Fizika Plazmy, Vol. 26, No. 5, 2000, pp. 445–454. Results are presented from experimental studies of heat transfer in liquid-like plasma-dust structures. The experiments were performed with aluminum oxide grains ~3–5 μm in size in an RF discharge plasma. The heat capacity of the dust grains in plasma is measured. The thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of liquid-like plasma-dust structures are deduced under the assumption that the observed temperature gradients and the propagation of a thermal perturbation in a dusty plasma are related to heat conduction within the dust component. The measured temperature dependences of the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity are in qualitative agreement with the results of numerical simulations performed in the model of a simple single-atom liquid. It is shown that quantitative discrepancy between the experimental and numerical results is related to the energy loss of dust grains in their collisions with the neutral particles of the ambient gas.  相似文献

The effect of charged micron-size dust grains (microparticles) on the electric parameters of the positive column of a low-pressure dc glow discharge in neon has been studied experimentally and numerically. Numerical analysis is carried out in the diffusion-drift approximation with allowance for the interaction of dust grains with metastable neon atoms. In a discharge with a dust grain cloud, the longitudinal electric field increases. As the number density of dust grains in an axisymmetric cylindrical dust cloud rises, the growth of the electric field saturates. It is shown that the contribution of metastable atoms to ionization is higher in a discharge with dust grains, in spite of the quenching of metastable atoms on dust grains. The processes of charging of dust grains and the dust cloud are considered. As the number density of dust grains rises, their charge decreases, while the space charge of the dust cloud increases. The results obtained can be used in plasma technologies involving microparticles.  相似文献

A theoretical model is presented that describes the charging of dust grains in the positive plasma column of a stratified glow dc discharge in argon. A one-dimensional self-consistent model is used to obtain axial profiles of the electric field, as well as the electron energy distribution function along the axis of the discharge tube. Radial profiles of the electric field are determined in the ambipolar diffusion approximation. It is assumed that, in the radial direction, the electron distribution function depends only on the total electron energy. Two-dimensional distributions of the discharge plasma parameters are calculated and used to determine the potential and charge of a test dust grain at a certain point within the discharge and the electrostatic forces acting on it. It is shown that the grain charge distribution depends strongly on the nonequilibrium electron distribution function and on the nonuniform distribution of the electric field in a stratified glow discharge. A discussion is presented on the suspension of dust grains, the separation of grains by size in the discharge striations, and a possible mechanism for the onset of vortex dust motion at the edge of a dust cloud.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the formation of a pinch in a plasma focus discharge in the presence of Al2O3 dust grains. Considerable attention is given to an analysis of the method for creating a dust target and determining its parameters. Phase transitions in a dust medium have been analyzed. It is found that the phase state of the dust component can be substantially affected by the radiation of the imploding plasma shell even in the preimplosion phase of the discharge. It is shown that a pinch produced in the presence of dust is more stable against MHD instabilities.  相似文献

Results are presented from numerical investigations of the dynamics of quasi-two-dimensional systems in the form of a monolayer of dust grains interacting by means of a screened Coulomb potential and suspended in the Earth’s gravitational field by an external electric field. The structural and transport characteristics of such a system, including the pair correlation functions and the viscosity and diffusion coefficients, were investigated over a broad parameter range corresponding to the conditions under which dust structures are observed in RF capacitive discharge plasmas. An analysis of the results obtained revealed that there is a specific topological transition typical of systems having a low spatial dimension.  相似文献

Dusty plasmas, which are open systems, can form stable one-dimensional self-organized structures. Absorption of plasma by dust particles results in the plasma flux from the plasma regions where the dust is absent. It is found that, in a one-dimensional dust layer, this flux is completely determined by the number of dust particles per unit area of the layer surface. This number determines all of the other parameters of the steady-state dust structure; in particular, it determines the spatial distributions of the dust density, dust charge, electron and ion densities, and ion drift velocity. In these structures, a force and electrostatic balance is established that ensures the necessary conditions for confining the dust and plasma particles in the structure. The equilibrium structures exist only for subthermal ion flow velocities. This criterion determines the maximum possible number of dust particles per unit area in the steady-state structure. The structures have a universal thickness, and the dust density changes sharply at the edge of the structure. The structures with a size either less than or larger than the ion mean free path with respect to ion-neutral collisions, quasi-neutral and charged structures, and soliton-and anti-soliton-like structures are investigated. Laboratory experiments and observations in extraterrestrial plasma formation are discussed in relation to dust structures.  相似文献

Results of the experimental studies of the dynamics of dust grains in the plasmas of an rf capacitive discharge and a dc glow discharge are presented. The dusty plasma of a dc glow discharge was investigated in both ground-based experiments and experiments carried out under microgravity conditions (on board the Mir space station). The pair correlation function, temperature, and diffusion coefficient of dust grains are measured in a wide range of the dusty-plasma parameters. Dimensionless parameters responsible for the microscopic transport of dust-grains in a gas-discharge plasma are determined. A nonintrusive diagnostic technique for determining the dust-grain charges and screening lengths under the assumption of screened interaction between the grains is proposed. This technique is used to estimate the surface potential of dust grains of different size in a gas-discharge plasma.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the behavior of dust grains in a track plasma produced by an accelerated proton beam. Dynamic dust structures in such a plasma are obtained for the first time, and their spatiotemporal evolution is thoroughly investigated. The structures develop from a dust spiral, which abruptly transforms with increasing dust density into a differentially rotating dust cloud across which dust-sound waves (including spiral waves generated by the dense central core) propagate. As time elapses, the dust cloud loses its fragments and gradually vanishes. At constant experimental conditions, the lifetime of the structures attains a few minutes.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental and theoretical investigations of the behavior of dust grains in a track plasma produced by a beam of accelerated protons. The dynamic ordered dust structures in a proton-beam-produced plasma are obtained for the first time. The processes leading to the formation of such structures are simulated numerically. The experimentally obtained dynamic vortex dust structures in a track plasma of a proton beam are explained theoretically, and the theoretical model developed to describe such a plasma is verified experimentally. Numerical investigations carried out by the method of Brownian dynamics made it possible to qualitatively explain the characteristic features of the formation of vortex dust structures.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of coagulation of dust grains of different sizes injected into a low-temperature plasma of an RF discharge in argon. A theoretical model describing the formation of dust clusters in a low-temperature plasma is developed and applied to interpret the results of experiments on the coagulation of dust grains having large negative charges. The grain size at which coagulation under the given plasma conditions is possible is estimated using the developed theory. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental data.  相似文献

Fiftyfour allergic patients with bronchial asthma or obstructive lung disease were investigated at admission and discharge after a 3 months hospitalization period in the alpine valley Davos. An intracutaneous skin test procedure was carried out with 16 common inhalant allergens. Histamine 0.01 mg/ml was used as a positive control and a phosphate buffered saline with 0.03% HSA and 0.5% phenol were used as negative controls. A liophylized control for house dust mite was used for every patient on admission and discharge, in order to control loss of allergen potency of the vial. Furthermore, an additional freshly prepared vial of house dust mite allergen was analyzed after it was opened and stored at 4°C after 3 months. The wheal and flare reactions were calculated separately for the early reaction (at 15 minutes) and the late reaction (at 6 hours). The sum of wheal/histamine index and fare/histamine index were calculated for the early phase reactions and analyzed according two-tailed paired student's t tests. Using RAST inhibition, the liophylized house dust mite showed the same allergen concentration as in the fluid form. The 3 months old vial was analyzed and showed the same allergen concentration as was expected. Results for histamine reactions on admission and discharge showed no significant difference. Patients showed no reactions on the negative controls. Differences were found between skin test reactions on admission and discharge for the sum of early wheal reactions (p = 0.0001), and to certain allergen wheal such as house dust mite and some other common allergens. We conclude that during a 12 weeks stay in the alpine climate Davos, intracutaneous early wheal reactions to certain allergens are decreasing possibly reflecting a decreased exposure. The late reaction showed no significant change.  相似文献

The plasma parameters in the electrode sheath of an RF discharge were studied experimentally under the conditions of dust monolayer levitation. A new method is proposed for determining the plasma parameters, such as the average electric field, ion density, and ion velocity. The screening parameter and the dust grain charge are estimated. The criteria of stable levitation of a dust monolayer are considered. The obtained results are compared with the available theoretical and numerical data, as well as with the results obtained using other diagnostic methods.  相似文献

A review of theoretical ideas on the physics of structurization instability of a homogeneous dusty plasma, i.e., the formation of zones with elevated and depressed density of dust grains and their arrangement into different structures observed in laboratory plasma under microgravity conditions, is presented. Theoretical models of compact dust structures that can form in the nonlinear stage of structurization instability, as well as models of a system of voids (both surrounding a compact structure and formed in the center of the structure), are discussed. Two types of structures with very different dimensions are possible, namely, those smaller or larger than the characteristic mean free path of ions in the plasma flow. Both of them are characterized by relatively regular distributions of dust grains; however, the first ones usually require external confinement, while the structures of the second type can be self-sustained (which is of particular interest). In this review, they are called dust clusters and self-organized dust structures, respectively. Both types of the structures are characterized by new physical processes that take place only in the presence of the dust component. The role of nonlinearities in the screening of highly charged dust grains that are often observed in modern laboratory experiments turns out to be great, but these nonlinearities have not received adequate study as of yet. Although structurization takes place upon both linear and nonlinear screening, it can be substantially different under laboratory and astrophysical conditions. Studies on the nonlinear screening of large charges in plasma began several decades ago; however, up to now, this effect was usually disregarded when interpreting the processes occurring in laboratory dusty plasma. One of the aims of the present review was to demonstrate the possibility of describing the nonlinear screening of individual grains and take it into account with the help of the basic equations for the equilibrium between plasma components when analyzing equilibrium structures. The effect of plasma screening nonlinearity on both the diffusion processes and the forces of dust drag by plasma fluxes is analyzed. It is shown how self-organized dust structures form in these processes. In the limit of very small dust grain charges, the forces acting on the dusty plasma components and the set of basic equations for stationary dust structures (with allowance for nonlinear screening) take a standard form. New qualitative effects, such as the suppression of diffusion due to ion scattering from dust grains and the formation of structures of different configurations, are described. A detailed comparison with previous results is performed. It is shown that the solution of basic nonlinear equations for dust structures yields new qualitative effects. A number of new effects to be studied in future dusty plasma experiments with the formation of structures in spherical chambers are predicted (it is assumed that diffusion will play a significant role under microgravity conditions). Recent ground-based experiments, as well as experiments carried out onboard the International Space Station, directly confirm the nonlinear character of screening and the significant role played by this nonlinearity in the structurization of dusty plasma. Experiments on the formation of structures consisting of smaller dust grains within structures formed of larger grains are discussed. It is shown that those experiments can be interpreted only using the concept of nonlinear screening.  相似文献
