1. The relative growth rate of saplings of 12 species from an oligotrophic lowland rain forest were measured in treefall gaps and understorey. Mean relative height growth ( R H) within treefall gaps was found to be slowest for tall-tree species with branched saplings, intermediate for subcanopy trees and fastest for tall-tree species with unbranched saplings. Most species had similar R H within the understorey. R H values were not related to leaf mass per unit area (LMA) or foliar N concentrations.
2. Allometric relationships between the total leaf area (TLA) and height were dependent upon light conditions; in general saplings of a given height had a greater TLA in treefall gaps than in understorey. The species with the largest estimated TLA values in gaps tended to have the greatest R H values in gaps; no such trend emerged in the understorey. The values of the allometric coefficients were not related to foliar properties.
3. The relationship between stem diameter and height was only weakly dependent on light conditions and the relationship between the growth rates in these dimensions was also weak. The lack of plasticity may reflect the fact that the height–diameter relationship has little bearing on a sapling's tolerance of shade.
4. One way of accommodating the dependence of allometry upon irradiance is to add R H as a covariate. We derive a relationship between growth rates from this resource-dependent allometric equation and show that it reasonably describes measurements taken in the caatinga forest.  相似文献

The mechanistic basis for differential sensitivities to chilling-induced photoinhibition among two rice ( Oryza sativa L.) cultivars (an Indica and a Japonica type) and one barley cultivar ( Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Albori) was examined. When leaf segments were exposed to moderate illumination at 4°C, a sustained decrease in the photochemical efficiency of photosystem (PS) II measured as the ratio of variable to maximal fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was observed for several hours. An analysis of fluorescence quenching revealed a sudden drop in PSII-driven electron transport rate (ETR) and a rapid rise in the reduction state of the primary electron acceptor QA upon exposure to chilling in moderate light. There was no appreciable difference in the level of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) nor in the xanthophyll cycle activity between Japonica rice and barley. However, barley was capable of sustaining a higher ETR, thereby keeping a lower reduction state of QA throughout the chilling for 6 h. The Indica rice was characterized by the lowest ability to develop the xanthophyll cycle-associated NPQ, particularly the fast relaxing NPQ component (qf), accompanied by the highest reduction state of QA and photoinhibitory quenching (qI). It is concluded that the lower susceptibility of barley to chilling-induced photoinhibition than Japonica rice is attributable to its higher potential to dissipate excess light energy via a photochemical mechanism, whereas Indica rice is more sensitive to photoinhibition at a chilling temperature than Japonica rice, due primarily to its lower capacity to develop an efficient NPQ pathway.  相似文献

Diurnal variations of gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence and some related biochemical characteristics in sun-acclimated mature citrus leaves of mist-sprayed (treatment) and unsprayed (control) trees were compared on sunny days during summer to identify the environmental and physiological factors limiting carbon gain in citrus tree canopies. At midday, net photosynthesis and maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II ( F v/ F m) in citrus leaves decreased significantly under control conditions, but the decrease was mitigated by mist spraying. Although the content of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide and activities of antioxidant enzymes increased at midday in both mist-sprayed and control leaves, they were much higher in control leaves than in mist-sprayed leaves. The level of D1 protein decreased significantly in control leaves at midday and then was partly recovered later, while that in treated leaves changed to a much lesser extent because of alleviation of photoinhibition by mist spraying. Both the fast and the slow phases of millisecond-delayed light emissions in treated citrus leaves were higher than those in control leaves, indicating that mist spraying protects the normal operation of the photosynthetic apparatus in leaves. Mist spraying also reduced leaf temperatures and the ratio of air to leaf vapour pressure deficit (ALVPD), leading to increases in stomatal conductance ( g s) and alleviation of photoinhibition at midday. It is concluded that the decline of leaf g s under high-ALVPD conditions in summer is an important factor contributing to midday depression of photosynthesis in citrus, and mist spraying is effective in alleviating midday depression of photosynthesis in citrus leaves.  相似文献

In situ responses to elevated CO2 in tropical forest understorey plants   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
1. Plants growing in deep shade and high temperature, such as in the understorey of humid tropical forests, have been predicted to be particularly sensitive to rising atmospheric CO2. We tested this hypothesis in five species whose microhabitat quantum flux density (QFD) was documented as a covariable. After 7 (tree seedlings of Tachigalia versicolor and Beilschmiedia pendula ) and 18 months (shrubs Piper cordulatum and Psychotria limonensis, and grass Pharus latifolius ) of elevated CO2 treatment ( c. 700 μl litre–1) under mean QFD of less than 11 μmol m–2 s–1, all species produced more biomass (25–76%) under elevated CO2.
2. Total plant biomass tended to increase with microhabitat QFD (daytime means varying from 5 to 11μmol m–2 s–1) but the relative stimulation by elevated CO2 was higher at low QFD except in Pharus .
3. Non-structural carbohydrate concentrations in leaves increased significantly in Pharus (+ 27%) and Tachigalia (+ 40%).
4. The data support the hypothesis that tropical plants growing near the photosynthetic light compensation point are responsive to elevated CO2. An improved plant carbon balance in deep shade is likely to influence understorey plant recruitment and competition as atmospheric CO2 continues to rise.  相似文献

The function of photosystem II (PSII) during desiccation was investigated via analysis of Chl a fluorescence emission in thalli from Parmelia quercina (Willd.) Vainio, Parmelia acetabulum (Necker) Duby, Ramalina farinacea (L.) Ach., Pseudevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf., and Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach. Water loss followed the same exponential pattern in all these species, the half time being dependent on species. Desiccation affected the fluorescence parameters. Dark-adapted maximum fluorescence (Fm), instantaneous fluorescence (Fo) and the ratio of variable (Fm–Fo) to Fm were dependent on water content and decreased in two distinct phases: a slow and apparently linear phase, followed by a more steep decline at low water content. Actual PSII photochemical yield (φPSII), non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), efficiency of photon capture (φexc), and photochemical quenching (qp) remained nearly constant until 30% relative water content (RWC), decreasing rapidly thereafter. In contrast, increased NPQ appeared to occur only at water content values lower than 20%. Treatment of thalli with dithiothreitol (DTT) effectively reduced NPQ during desiccation and increased susceptibility to photoinhibition caused by exposure to high light as measured by dark recovery of the FvFm ratio. HPLC analysis showed that the level of the de-epoxidized xanthophyll cycle pigments antheraxanthin (Anth) and zeaxanthin (Zea) increased during lichen desiccation. The results point towards the existence of a photoprotective mechanism with the involvement of Zea and Anth in non-radiative dissipation of the desiccation-induced excess of energy.  相似文献

Atrazine-resistant (AR) weeds have a modified D1 protein structure, with a Ser264→Gly mutation on the D1 protein, near the plastoquinone binding niche. The photosynthetic performance, the light response of the xanthophyll cycle and chlorophyll fluorescence quenching-related parameters were compared in attached leaves of susceptible (S) and AR biotypes of the C3 dicot Chenopodium album L., Epilobium adenocaulon Hausskn., Erigeron canadensis L., Senecio vulgaris L. and Solanum nigrum L. and the C4 dicot Amaranthus retroflexus L. grown under natural high-light conditions. No significant difference in CO2 assimilation rate per leaf area unit was found between the S and AR biotypes of the investigated C3 plants, whereas the AR biotype of A. retroflexus exhibited a relatively poor photosynthetic performance. The D1 protein mutant plants expressed a reduced activity of light-stimulated zeaxanthin formation. Neither the lower violaxanthin de-epoxidase activity nor the depletion of ascorbate seems to be the cause of the lower in vivo zeaxanthin formation in the AR plants. All the D1 mutant weeds had limited light-induced non-photochemical (NPQ) and photochemical (qP) quenching capacities, and displayed a higher photosensitivity, as characterized by the ratio (1-qP)/NPQ and a higher susceptibility to photoinhibition. Analysis of the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters showed that a lower proportion of excitation energy was allocated to PSII photochemistry, while a higher excess of excitation remained in the AR weeds relative to the S plants.  相似文献

1. The instantaneous and integrated leaf gas exchange of 13 species of southern hemisphere conifers grown under identical glasshouse conditions were examined to determine whether there was any correlation between the characteristics of water use at the leaf level and environmental water availability.
2. In the conifer species examined, the minimum ratio of internal to ambient CO2 measured in leaves during artificially imposed drought [( c i/ c a)min] was strongly correlated with the minimum rainfall observed within the natural range of each species. This suggests that the distributions of these species are constrained by the drought tolerance of their photosynthetic apparatus.
3. A good correlation was found between the ratio of internal to ambient CO2 measured in leaves under optimal conditions ( c i/ c a)max and leaf δ13C (and hence inferred ∫[ c i/ c a]). Neither of these, however, correlated with the environmental parameters considered most likely to be limiting species distribution, i.e. precipitation and altitude.
4. These data suggest that decreasing water availability may have been the major factor responsible for the restriction and extinction of conifers in the southern hemisphere.  相似文献

Aims It has long been recognized that photoinhibition of photosynthesis is induced by high light. However, our recent studies are not consistent with this traditional view. Therefore, the objective of this study is to explore the induction of photoinhibition and its mechanisms under full sunlight outdoors.
Methods Changes of leaf morphology, gas exchange, and chlorophyll a fluorescence were measured to investigate the induction and mechanisms of photoinhibition under high light in Hosta, which is a typical shade-tolerant plant.
Important findings Hosta plants grown under full sunlight (HT) and low light (LT) developed sun- and shade-type leaf morphological characteristics, respectively. Under a full sunlight, Hosta plants had lower photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content than under the LT; whereas, there were only slight difference in the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) between the two treatments, suggesting that Hosta plants could grow normally under full sunlight without severe photoinhibition. After transition from the low to a high light (LHT), the photosynthetic rate and maximum quantum yield of photosystem II decreased sharply, reflecting that the LHT treatment led to irreversibly inactivation of photosystem II. Additionally, the shape of chlorophyll a fluorescence transients also changed significantly; the relative fluorescence yield of the K and J steps were reduced by 24.3% and 34.2%, respectively, indicating that the acceptor side of photosystem II was damaged more severely than the donor side. Consequently, we postulate that photoinhibition in Hosta leaves is mainly induced by the sudden enhancement of light intensity outdoors. Hosta can acclimate to high irradiance through leaf development outdoors. Our finding is of great significance in understanding the acclimation of plants to high light and cultivation of shade-tolerant plants in field.  相似文献

Frost tolerance has been reported in the shoots of wild, tuberiferous potato species such as Solanum commersonii when the plants are grown in either field or controlled conditions. However, these plants can survive as underground tubers and avoid unfavorable environmental conditions altogether. As such, leaf growth and photosynthesis at low temperature may not be required for survival of the plants. In order to determine the temperature sensitivity of S. commersonii shoots, we examined leaf growth, development and photosynthesis in plants raised at 20/16°C (day/night). 12/9°C and 5/2°C. S. commersonii leaves grown at 5°C exhibited a marked decrease in leaf area and in total chlorophyll (Chl) content per leaf area when compared with leaves grown at 20°C. Furthermore, leaves grown at 5°C did not exhibit the expected decrease in either water content or susceptibility to low-temperature-induced photoinhibition that normally characterizes cold acclimation in frost-tolerant plants. Measurements of CO2-saturated O2 evolution showed that the photosynthetic apparatus of 5°C plants was functional, even though the efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry was reduced by growth at 5°C. A decrease in the resolution of the M-peak in the slow transients for Chl a fluorescence in leaves grown at 12 and 5°C and in all leaves exposed to high light at 5°C indicated that low temperature significantly affected processes on the reducing side of QA, the primary quinone electron acceptor in photosystem II. Thus S. commarsonii exhibits the characteristics of a plant that is limited by chilling temperatures. Although S. commersonii can tolerate light frosts, its sensitivity to chilling temperatures may result in shoot dieback in winter in its native habitat. The plants may avoid both chilling and freezing temperatures by overwintering as underground tubers.  相似文献

Photosystem II (PSII) activity was examsined in leaves of chilling-sensitive cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L.), tomato ( Lycopersicum esculentum L.), and maize ( Zea mays L.), and in chilling-tolerant barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) illuminated with moderate white light (300 µmol m−2 s−1) at 4°C using chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements. PSII activity was inhibited in leaves of all the four plants as suggested by the decline in F v/ F m, 1/ F o − 1/ F m, and F v/ F o values. The changes in initial fluorescence level ( F o), F v/ F m, 1/ F o − /1/ F m, and F v/ F o ratios indicate a stronger PSII inhibition in cucumber, maize and tomato plants. The kinetics of chlorophyll a fluorescence rise showed complex changes in the magnitudes and rise of O-J, J-I, and I-P phases caused by photoinhibition. The selective suppression of the J-I phase of fluorescence rise kinetics provides evidence for weakened electron donation from the oxidizing side, whereas the accumulation of reduced QA suggests damage to the acceptor side of PSII. These findings imply that the process of chilling-induced photoinhibition involves damage to more than one site in the PSII complexes. Furthermore, comparative analyses of the decline in F v/ F o and photooxidation of P700 explicitly show that the extent of photoinhibitory damage to PSII and photosystem I is similar in leaves of cucumber plants grown at a low irradiance level.  相似文献

Chilling in the light imposes a considerable level of stress on the photosynthetic apparatus, resulting in a decrease of photosystem II activity and the quenching of maximum and variable fluorescence. We selected in a fah - 1 mutagenized population of Arabidopsis thaliana , which permits a direct visible evaluation of the intensity of chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, a monogenic recessive nuclear mutant hypersensitive to photoinhibition induced by light and cold. The major phenotypic trait of the mutant is the appearance of chlorotic areas on developed leaves. Photochemical analyses indicate that the mutant is hypersensitive to photoinhibition in excess light in the cold but also at room temperature. The susceptibility to photoinhibition is a consequence of perturbations in photochemistry already present in unstressed plants. Such perturbations result in a greater fraction of the primary acceptor QA remaining in the reduced state even at low light fluxes. From estimates of the number of total and functional PSII units and measurements of PSII quantum yield and QA reoxidation kinetics, the basic lesion of the mutant seems restricted to PSII photochemistry likely affecting the rate of electron transport from QA to QB.

1. The influence of leaf thickness on internal conductance for CO2 transfer from substomatal cavity to chloroplast stroma ( g i) and carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) of leaf dry matter was investigated for some evergreen tree species from Japanese temperate forests. g i was estimated based on the combined measurements of gas exchange and concurrent carbon isotope discrimination.
2. Leaves with thicker mesophyll tended to have larger leaf dry mass per area (LMA), larger surface area of mesophyll cells exposed to intercellular air spaces per unit leaf area ( S mes) and smaller volume ratio of intercellular spaces to the whole mesophyll (mesophyll porosity).
3. g i of these leaves was correlated positively to S mes but negatively to mesophyll porosity. The variation in g i among these species would be therefore primarily determined by variation of the conductance in liquid phase rather than that in gas phase.
4. δ13C was positively correlated to mesophyll thickness and leaf nitrogen content on an area basis. However, g i values did not correlate to δ13C. These results suggest that difference in δ13C among the species was not caused by the variation in g i, but mainly by the difference in long-term photosynthetic capacity.
5. Comparison of our results with those of previous studies showed that the correlation between leaf thickness and g i differed depending on leaf functional types (evergreen, deciduous or annual). Differences in leaf properties among these functional types were discussed.  相似文献

When willow leaves were transferred from 270 to 650 μmol m-2 s-1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), partial photoinhibition developed over the next hours. This was manifested as roughly parallel inhibitions of the ratio of variable over maximal chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/FM), and of the maximal quantum yield and the capacity of photosynthesis. This occurred even though photosynthesis was operating well below its capacity and only about one fourth of the reaction centres of photosystem (PS) II were in the closed state. When the air temperature was lowered from 25 to 15°C (18°C leaf temperature) photoinhibition was markedly accelerated. This temperature effect is suggested to be mediated largely by a decrease in the rate of energy dissipation through photosynthesis and indicated by a 50% increase in the number of closed PSII reaction centres. The pool size of the carotcnoid zeaxanthin and the extent of inhibition of the Fv/FM ratio were positively correlated during the treatment. However, the relaxation following imposition of darkness was much faster for zeaxanthin than for the Fv/FM ratio, ruling out the possibility of a direct causal relationship. The energy distribution between PSII and PSI was unaltered upon photoinhibition. However, the functioning of the PSII reaction centres was altered, as indicated by a rise in the minimal fluorescence, Fa.  相似文献

By analysis of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence, the effects of NaCl treatment and supplemental CaCl2 on photosynthesis, photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry and photoinhibition were investigated in Rumex leaves. Photosynthesis in Rumex leaves was strongly inhibited by 200 m M NaCl treatment. Such inhibition of photosynthesis was ameliorated by CaCl2 supplement. Neither NaCl treatment nor CaCl2 supplement had any significant effects on the PSII primary photochemical reaction in dark-adapted leaves. In light-adapted leaves, however, 200 m M NaCl treatment significantly decreased photochemical quenching (qp), efficiency of excitation energy capture by open PSII reaction centers (FV'/FM') and quantum yield of PSII electron transport (ΦPSII). These decreases in qp, FV'/FM' and ΦPSII were mitigated by CaCl2 supplement with the maximum of its effect appearing at a concentration of 8 m M CaCl2. A similar mitigating effect was shown in 200 m M NaCl-treated Rumex leaves when susceptibility of PSII to photoinhibition was determined under high irradiance. It is suggested that the mitigation of photoinhibition in NaCl-treated leaves is because of the amelioration of inhibition of photosynthesis.  相似文献

Ascorbic acid (Asc) is a major antioxidant involved in photoprotection and photosynthetic function in plants. Dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) catalyzes the regeneration of Asc from its oxidized state and serves as an important regulator of Asc recycling. In this work, we used a molecular biochemical approach to investigate how the efficiency of Asc recycling affects non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). Suppression of DHAR expression resulted in a lower induction of NPQ that correlated with reductions in chlorophyll and xanthophyll pigments, quantum yield of photosystem II, and CO(2) assimilation, whereas the level of reactive oxygen species increased. The quickly reversible component of NPQ decreased and the slowly reversible or irreversible component of NPQ increased following a reduction in DHAR expression. Significant photoinhibition was also observed following exposure to high light. Direct feeding with Asc restored the appropriate induction of NPQ in DHAR-suppressed leaves. In contrast, increasing DHAR expression increased the pool size of xanthophyll and chlorophyll pigments as well as the rate of CO(2) assimilation, particularly at high light intensities, whereas the level of reactive oxygen species was reduced. Leaves with increased DHAR expression experienced less photoinhibition than did wild-type plants following exposure to high light. DHAR activity, therefore, can affect the appropriate induction of NPQ and level of photoprotection during exposure to high light.  相似文献

Photoinactivation of photosystem II (PSII) and energy dissipation at low leaf temperatures were investigated in leaves of glasshouse-grown grapevine ( Vitis vinifera L. cv. Riesling). At low temperatures (< 15°C), photosynthetic rates of CO2 assimilation were reduced. However, despite a significant increase in the amount of light excessive to that required by photosynthesis, grapevine leaves maintained high intrinsic quantum efficiencies of PSII ( F v/ F m) and were highly resistant to photoinactivation compared to other species. Non-photochemical energy dissipation involving xanthophylls and fast D1 repair were the main protective processes reducing the 'gross' rate of photoinactivation and the 'net' rate of photoinactivation, respectively. We developed an improved method of energy dissipation analysis that revealed up to 75% of absorbed light is dissipated thermally via pH- and xanthophyll-mediated non-photochemical quenching at low temperatures (5–15°C) and moderate (800 µmol quanta m−2 s−1) light. Up to 20% of the energy flux contributing to electron transport was dissipated via photorespiration when taking into account temperature-dependent mesophyll conductance; however, this flux used in photorespiration was only a relatively small amount of the total absorbed light energy. Photoreduction of O2 at photosystem I (PSI) and subsequent superoxide detoxification (water-water cycle) was more sensitive to inhibition by low temperature than photorespiration. Therefore the water-water cycle represents a negligibly small energy sink below 15°C, irrespective of mesophyll conductance.  相似文献

Photoinhibition of photosystem II was studied in vivo with bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) plants grown in the presence of 0.3 (control), 4, or 15 microM Cu(2+). Although photoinhibition, measured in the presence of lincomycin to block concurrent recovery, is faster in leaves of Cu(2+)-treated plants than in control leaves, thylakoids isolated from Cu-treated plants did not show high sensitivity to photoinhibition. Direct effects of excess Cu(2+) on chloroplast metabolism are actually unlikely, because the Cu concentration of chloroplasts of Cu-treated plants was lower than that of their leaves. Excess Cu in the growth medium did not cause severe oxidative stress, collapse of antioxidative defenses, or loss of photoprotection. Thus, these hypothetical effects can be eliminated as causes for Cu-enhanced photoinhibition in intact leaves. However, Cu treatment lowered the leaf chlorophyll (Chl) concentration and reduced the thylakoid membrane network. The loss of Chl and sensitivity to photoinhibition could be overcome by adding excess Fe together with excess Cu to the growth medium. The addition of Fe lowered the Cu(2+) concentration of the leaves, suggesting that Cu outcompetes Fe in Fe uptake. We suggest that the reduction of leaf Chl concentration, caused by the Cu-induced iron deficiency, causes the high photosensitivity of photosystem II in Cu(2+)-treated plants. A causal relationship between the susceptibility to photoinhibition and the leaf optical density was established in several plant species. Plant species adapted to high-light habitats apparently benefit from thick leaves because the rate of photoinhibition is directly proportional to light intensity, but photosynthesis becomes saturated by moderate light.  相似文献

Evidence from 10 studies comparing angiosperm trees and 5 studies comparing conifers of differing shade‐tolerance was analysed. The number of intraphyletic comparisons in which the more shade‐tolerant species showed the greater relative increase of biomass in elevated CO2 was significantly higher than would be expected by chance alone. It is suggested that more shade‐tolerant species are inherently better disposed, in terms of plant architecture and partitioning of biomass and nitrogen, to utilise resources (light, water, nutrients) that are potentially limiting in elevated CO2 and that these traits are responsible for the interaction between shade‐tolerance and CO2 concentration. Compared with less shade‐tolerant angiosperm trees, more shade‐tolerant angiosperm species generally have a lower leaf area ratio in ambient CO2 and show a smaller relative reduction in elevated CO2. Furthermore, leaf nitrogen content is usually lower in more shade‐tolerant angiosperm species and tends to be more strongly reduced by elevated CO2 in those species. Within angiosperm trees, more shade‐tolerant species showed a stronger stimulation of net leaf photosynthetic rate in most experiments, but this trend was not significant.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Tiger beetles ( Cicindela ) of open habitats have served as model ectotherms in studies of the dependence of activity and habitat utilization on temperature. Potential departures from the cicindelid model were investigated in Cicindela sexguttata , a species inhabiting forests where thermal resources are patchy and ephemeral.
2. Body temperatures (Tb) were determined by inserting thermocouples into beetles immediately after observing specific behaviours in the field. Cicindela sexguttata elevated Tb by basking, foraged at a preferred Tb of 32.8 °C, and stilted, sun-faced, or sought shade when Tb exceeded 35 °C. Although these behaviours were typical of Cicindela , their set points were lower than those of species in more open habitats.
3. Illuminated substrates were utilized for basking and foraging. Beetles were dispersed throughout the forest floor in early spring, but became aggregated in light gaps when the canopy leafed out. Operative temperatures of thermal models indicated that beetles were unable to maintain the preferred Tb in shade and would not be able to maintain a preferred Tb in light gaps during the autumn, when adults are normally in diapause.
4. Beetles were confined to foraging in light gaps once the canopy was closed. Foraging rate and searching speed were independent of Tb, in contrast to other cicindelids. Adults rarely searched for prey, but ambushed small arthropods that alighted in the light gap. Dependence on patches of illumination as thermal resources may increase prey capture, intraspecific encounters, and risk of predation, and preclude foraging in the autumn when Cicindela species of open habitats are also active.  相似文献
